As a part time resident of Chesterfield, I am not slow to embrace anything that happens and of course, I was ecstatic when the town’s football team gained promotion into division one, at the same time finishing top of the table. Further success for the town was achieved by the reigning Miss Chesterfield 2014, Stephanie Hill, from Calver, Derbyshire a stunning looking nineteen year old, who competed against seventy seven other semifinalists for a place in the Miss England finals 2014. Stephanie, along with nine other contestants has qualified for the finals to be held from the fourteenth to the sixteenth of June in Torquay. The final consists of several different rounds, including a Miss Talent and a Miss Eco, in which she will model her own Eco Outfit, which she created from tweed donated by a local bespoke tailor from Calver, Mr. Shepherd along with peacock and pheasant feathers collected from local farms. There will also be a Sportswoman round where contestants participate in an ‘Xtreme Boot Camp’, which is a military style workout designed to put the sixty finalists through their paces. Things have certainly changed since I was involved in the ‘Miss Great Britain’ heats in the nineteen eighties when I coowned Chaplins in Dronfield. There is more to Stephanie than ‘just a pretty face’. Throughout her reign as Miss Chesterfield, she will continue to raise funds for ‘Beauty With a Purpose Charity, which was founded by Julia Morley, wife of Eric Morley of Miss World fame, and benefits disadvantaged children not only in this country, but worldwide. A former student at Lady Manners School in Bakewell, Stephanie is to take a university place studying radio-therapy and oncology in order to take up a career as a therapy radiographer. There are more strings to the bow of this multitalented lass, who is a member of the highly acclaimed Manor Operatic Society who will be performing Peter Pan at the end of the year. She is also an accomplished horsewoman, competing

in ‘Horse of the Year Show’ qualifying events at various county shows throughout the country this summer, where she has had some success previously, ﬁnishing fourth in 2012 on her horse, Diamond Cavalier Royale. I am sure you will enjoin me in wishing Stephanie much success. Saturday was probably my most memorable of the year so far with a very exciting cricket one day international between England and Sri Lanka followed by the long awaited re-match in the boxing ring between Carl Froch and George Groves, which was a great ﬁght. To top up a perfect day, I went to see one of my favourite singers, Rachel Raynor and her band The Riffsat the Yew Tree, Coal Aston.

NHS HEALTH CHECKS ON THE UP TELL US ONCE Public Health England’s latest figures show that more people than ever are accepting the offer of an NHS Health Check. More people than ever before are accepting the offer to attend an NHS Health Check according to new figures from Public Health England (PHE). The figures, published today (28 May 2014), show that in the last year over 1.3 million people have accepted the offer which aims to identify those at risk of serious, but potentially avoidable conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease. Out of the eligible population, 2,824,726 people across all 152 local authorities in England were offered, and 1,382,864 people have had, an NHS Health Check between April 2013 and April 2014, a 9.5% increase compared to the previous year. This is the largest number of appointments offered and received since the programme started in April 2009, being the first annual results since local authorities took on responsibility for the programme in April 2013. Professor Kevin Fenton, Director of Health and Wellbeing at PHE, said, “It’s extremely encouraging to see more people than ever before are taking up the offer, but we want to do better. With such a huge burden of disease associated with potentially avoidable conditions such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes, the NHS Health Check presents a real opportunity for individuals to take

steps earlier, and through modifications in behaviour and lifestyle, reduce their risk.” The success of the programme this year is testament to the dedicated collaborative work of local authorities and the NHS. In order to maximise the benefits to public health it is essential that we continue increasing the impact of the programme. There are still variations across England in the number of people taking up this offer and we will continue to work with, and support, local action, ensuring the programme is accessible and benefiting those that need it across the country. Public Health Minister, Jane Ellison said: I am delighted to see more people than ever taking up the offer of a free NHS Health Check. These checks have a major part to play in early prevention of disease, and are an important step for many people towards improving their health and becoming more aware of how they can lead a healthier life. I urge everyone who is offered an NHS Health Check to take up the offer. The key issue for local authorities will be making sure that, as well as improving the uptake for those who would most benefit, individuals have access to information and services that can support them to reduce their risks. This includes better information on where, and how, to get support for healthy diet and weight management, smoking cessation programmes and access to leisure services and green spaces.

Support to families facing bereavement will be expanded as a new service joins Tell Us Once. Tell Us Once allows citizens to inform authorities of a birth or bereavement just once – rather than contacting a series of different branches of government. It now covers: • local authorities • DVLA • HMRC • HM Passport Ofﬁce • DWP

This month, the service was expanded to include concessionary travel so now 32 central and government services are covered – and the red tape that families face at the time of a bereavement is further reduced.The service is now offered by 89% of local authorities in UK – and is available to around 54 million people. The 1 millionth customer is expected to be helped later this year. Work and Pensions Minister Steve Webb said, “Tell Us Once is helping people in often the most difficult times of their lives. The vast majority of people find the service useful and it shows how the government can work together to benefit the citizen, as well as being better value for the taxpayer. The vast majority of the country is now covered by Tell Us Once and I call on the final local authorities to come on board.” Every year around 1 million people experience a birth or bereavement, and when they do, they need to notify government. This is often when they feel least able to cope with dealing with red tape. Currently there are over 10 million concessionary travel passes in England and Wales and approximately 80% of older people have one. Using Tell Us Once will enable bereaved families to notify the appropriate services more quickly that the pass is no longer required.

Early prostate cancer often presents with urinary symptoms like poor stream, increased frequency, hesitancy, incontinence. These symptoms can also be present with noncancerous enlargement of prostate, a common condition in men over 60. If you have any of these symptoms it is important that you see your GP and discuss the problem. A simple blood test and clinical examination could be helpful in detecting prostate cancer. These symptoms, especially in younger men should be

taken seriously and urgent medical help should be sought. Aggressive prostate cancer can often present at an advanced stage, commonly with symptoms arising from metastasis to bones. If this happens, you may notice recent onset pain in your back, hips or pelvis. Prostate cancer, if detected at an early stage, has a high chance of cure with Radiotherapy or surgery. Even prostate cancer diagnosed at an advanced stage can be kept under control for several years in most patients, with hormone treatment allowing patients to lead a nearnormal life. TOUGH NEW ADJUDICATOR TO PROTECT OVER HALF OF BRITAIN’S PUBS

CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has welcomed this week’s announcement of plans for a Pubs Adjudicator which will ensure that publicans are treated fairly and will crack down on cases of inﬂated rents and excessive beer prices charged to publicans. CAMRA’s Head of Communications Tom Stainer said: “We are delighted that after our 10 year campaign the Government is now introducing a Pubs Adjudicator to protect the nation’s pubs. With 28 pubs closing a week it is vital that publicans, who are on the frontline of keeping our valued community pubs open, are given protection from heavy handed business practices from the big pubcos.” “Publicans could see the price they pay for beer fall by up to 60 pence a pint if the Adjudicator forces the big pubcos to match open market prices. A 60 pence a pint saving would

be a huge boost in the battle to keep pubs open and could lead to cheaper pub prices for customers.” “While we urge the Government to go further by introducing guest beer and market rent only options for tied publicans, today’s announcement is great news for publicans and pub goers alike. Over the last decade many thousands of pubs have been lost as big pub companies have squeezed them out of existence with sky-high rents and beer prices.”

BLADES LEGENDS RETURN TO FIRTH PARK WMC On Friday 16th May there was another entertaining evening at Firth Park WMC with Sheffield United legends Tony Kenworthy & Keith Edwards. Tony Kenworthy spent the majority of his footballing careeer with Blades in the 70s & 80s - described as a 'nononsense' & 'hard as nails' defender for who Bramall Lane was truly where his heart was. At the other end of the pitch Keith Edwards spent around half of his career with the Blades at roughly the same time. A prolific centre forward of his day with an incredible goal to appearance ratio that many strikers can only dream of. It was nearly 40 years ago that they arrived as teenagers serving apprenticeships at Sheffield United & also by coincidence happened to share the same digs. They laughed together as they re-called stories & memories together of their adventures -

The pair were extremely well received on the night both on & off the stage and they ended the evening by emphasising their love for the club & fans, both then and now despite neither being natives of Sheffield. The audience showed their appreciation & gratitude to these legends who proudly sported the colours of the red & white of Sheffield United. What else did Club Historians contributor John share with us? In terms of entertainment, he thought it was a case of pot luck. ‘You might see a future star, a fading one or ones who would never be either. But if the turn never arrived we wanted our money back.’ John saw some big name acts at the Haughton club, such as Ace of Clubs, Paul Daniels, Les Dawson, Chubby Brown. Billy J. Kramer and The Dakotas even went to a nightclub with John and his mates afterwards! Among his memories, John recalled the annual day trip to Redcar. ‘At one time a convoy of as many as 11 coaches set off for the day. Children and wives went free and the kids also got a bit of pocket money. Games were organised on the beach with sweets awarded to winners.’ At Easter there was a party with chocolate eggs, crisps, pop and entertainment. Over at Darlington WMC, members came to learn about John’s medical conditioncardiomyopathy. He organised a raffle in aid of the Cardiomyopathy Association and managed to get a variety of prizes donated such as Argos and M&S vouchers, and interestingly, a jacket worn by Curlie Watts in Coronation Street! John expected the raffle to make about £50 but the total figure was £150- a reminder of the great fundraising clubs do. But John saw the decline of clubs and how they were struggling when he wrote to us in 2009. Day-time opening times had been cut. He was one of many who couldn’t get out at night, so the daytime opening was important also for nightshift workers. He saw the club ‘as a vital part of our lives. Some traditions from the past are not now practicable or of use in this modern era. A club should be about its members needs and not just about profits.’ He thought that things could improve if food and cheaper drink were available and clubs downsized. He recognized the threat of cheap supermarket drink and thought they should be made to charge more realistic prices. He pleaded for committees to listen to the Member’s views and take them seriously. That might mean bringing back the strippers in John’s view! He hoped that different tactics and changes would ‘make the WMC the centre of the community again. Offer the use of rooms (free) for local groups to meet.’ Otherwise, he warned, ‘an important part of British society will be lost forever!’ Sadly, we’ve lost John now but his words still have great relevance.

SATURDAYS SLAM DUNK ON A NIGHT’S ALRIGHT Preview: The Saturdays Date: 10/09/14 Venue: Sheffield City Hall By Kt Evans Since their formation back in 2007, The Saturdays have gone on to become one of the UK’s most celebrated British girl groups. With a host of number one singles under the five pieces belt, not to mention five studio albums together with arena headline tours, Molly, Una, Vanessa, Frankie and Rochelle are to perform at Sheffield’s City on 10th September, in conjunction with the release of their greatest hits album to be released later this year. It would be a massively difficult task to not know at least a small amount of prior knowledge about London based five piece The Saturdays. Their formation began at an open audition with record label Polydor right back in 2007, which instantly landed the freshly formed group an instant signing deal. One of the highlights of my calendar features lots of anglers getting together, a little bit of networking and some fantastic new products! The Marukyu Media/Launch day at Mallory Park is always interesting, and offers the chance to share information about new products with the many retailers and anglers who are invited each year...and we get a smashing breakfast too! The day starts with an introduction from CEO John Loftus, a short explanation of the baits from Roy Marlow, I usually get stitched up to speak about the requirements of media images and content and then the invited guests are left to sample the products at the excellent Glebe Fishery nearby. As usual, it rained again, so whilst the fish were happy, the anglers were less so as the persistent rain made conditions unpleasant, although the friendly match was won with over 200lbs of fish, all taken on the new baits! Listening to consumer feedback is a vital aspect of my work at Marukyu, and along with Marketing Manager Nick Marlow, we feed this information back up the chain to the senior management to help decide future products, price points and pack sizes. An example of this is shown by the release of the brand new 2 kilo pack range which covers four fantastic varieties of groundbait with an equivalent price to competitor products. We were constantly asked when we going to offer this particular item, so after some research to ensure the very best ingredients, the packs have been released for retail sale and have been extremely successful, even selling out in just three hours in some cases... The recently released Skrill (Squid and Krill) pellets are another new addition to the 2014 catalogue, again, an example of what anglers wanted. The pellets are uniform in both shape and sink rates, black in colour, available in 2, 4, 6, and 8mm sizes, and have high levels of attraction. I witnessed them in action (I’ve also used them myself) when I watched Phil Allton quietly bait the margins before proceeding to catch a match winning 211lbs. Phil dampened the pellets first to help break the surface tension, fed a couple of handfuls then fished a banded Skrill over the top and added a few more pellets every couple of minutes; a masterclass in match angling made easy with a great new bait...the carp loved them! Not yet in the shops, but seen for the first time yesterday were two new soft hooker pellets designed to complete the Skrill and Jpelletz range of hard feed pellets. These new hookers are as close to neutral buoyancy as possible, resilient once hooked and incredibly simple to use and will be very popular once on the shelves of your local store. A demonstration showed how quickly they leak attractants into the surrounding water making them almost impossible for fish to ignore. They can be hair rigged or hooked directly, so offer a range of options depending on the conditions; I can’t wait to try them! Find out more about the new range of products at www.marukyu.co.uk

Sheffield Wednesday have signed Southampton defender Matt Young. The 20-year-old has agreed a one-year deal at Hillsborough. Young began his footballing education with Tottenham Hotspur up to the age of 16 when the stopper signed scholarship forms at Southampton. The defender impressed at St Mary’s and signed his first professional deal with the South Coast club in May 2012. A former captain of the Saints Under-18s, Young was a regular in Southampton’s Development Squad during the 2013/14 campaign. Primarily a right back, Young is comfortable in any position across the backline and he told swfc.co.uk: “I came down to the club and had a trial, played in the games against Coventry and Barnsley and thankfully I’ve done enough to impress and I’m really pleased to be here. “Everyone has made me feel welcome, training was lively and games were good. “Southampton have some extremely talented players and when you play and train alongside them, they obviously rub off on you. “I’ve played with players who pushed on into the first team there including the likes of Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers and good luck to them. “Now I’m happy to be here and to take my own path. “I want to get a good pre-season under my belt, show the gaffer what I can do and try to get in his thoughts for the start of the season.” The Owls have also signed young central defender Ed Sanders. The 18-year-old Stoke City academy product will join the Owls on a one-year deal. Sanders spent his formative years learning his trade at Portsmouth up until the age of 16 before a successful trial at Stoke led to the defender signing a two-year scholarship at the Britannia Stadium. Sanders was a mainstay in the Potters’ Under-18 squad throughout the past two campaigns during which time he captained the side. RYAN’S SUMMER OPTIMISM Ryan Flynn says there is a real optimism amongst the players ahead of the 2014/15 season. The 25-year-old believes United’s successful secondhalf to last term was largely down to Nigel Clough’s management style and his desire to allow his players the opportunity to express themselves. Flynn, who signed a new two-year contract before the end of the last campaign, revealed: “Nothing is over complicated at all. You are given a job to do and then expected to try and do your utmost to achieve it. “The Gaffer is demanding but in a good way and, like the rest of his staff, enjoys a laugh and a joke. When it’s time to work, though, your are expected to apply yourself properly which is the way it should be. “I think the rest of the lads will back me up when I say that although it’s tough the training is really enjoyable. Together with the mood around the place, is why we all look forward to coming in every single day.” The Scotsman insists the players are already braced for a gruelling pre-season campaign, adding: “All of the lads who have worked with the Gaffer before have left us in no doubt what to expect. They made it pretty clear to the rest of us that it is going to be really, really tough. “To the point that some of us might have never experienced anything like it before. But, to be honest, I think that’s a positive. It means, hopefully, that we’ll be able to hit the ground running and be ready to go on 9 August.”

PROMOTION KEY TO DERBYSHIRE SIGNING Steve Evans talks to www.themillers.co.uk... Manager Steve Evans has admitted that the Millers elevation to The Championship was key to him signing former England under-21 International Matt Derbyshire. Evans added the ex-Blackburn hot-shot to his ranks on Friday confirming he was impressed with the 28year-old’s professionalism throughout negotiations. Derbyshire becomes the Millers second summer signing and Evans stressed that the striker was keen to stay in The Championship after leaving Nottingham Forest at the end of last season. “We would not have got him in League One because kid has had significant interest in him from Championship clubs,” Evans told www.themillers. co.uk “Our target list has always been the same but within that list there is an element of players that our only hope of signing them was if we were in The Championship, that wasn’t because of finance, it was about playing as high as you possibly can.” With work ethic always high on the Evans manifesto he believes that Derbyshire ticks all the right boxes to fit in with the Millers all action style of play. “He’s quick, strong and a clever player with good movement,” reiterated Evans. “He has the capability of getting goals from anywhere, he’s certainly not to be discounted from getting the Alex Revell type of goal like we saw at Wembley, but he’ll also be in the positions to get simple tap-ins. It promises to be a hectic pre-season for United’s next generations at the Redtooth Academy. All ages groups will be leaving the steel city in the weeks ahead and Academy Manager Nick Cox has outlined the importance of developing players on and off the field during pre-season. Cox remarked: “It is fantastic to see our youngsters preparing for what promises to be a busy, busy summer. “We are privileged that we have the opportunity to allow our youngsters to compete in tournaments across the country in addition to those travelling abroad. “It will be an exciting few weeks and it is a great experience for the lads of all ages to experience something different. “We are also confident that we will be competitive on the field.” The U9s and U10s recently departed for Belgium, where they will compete against international opposition during a three-day stay. The U11s, U12s, U13s and U14s are heading to the Oakham Festival in Leicestershire (formerly the Repton Festival), whilst the Blades will also be represented in the Foyle Cup and Milk Cup (held in NorRepublic of Ireland and Northern Ireland respectively). Meanwhile, the U16s will compete in the Dennis Law International Tournament which takes place in Aberdeen in July. Junior teams aim to develop skills and technique to lead onto a pathway from junior level football to senior. All hopefuls are asked to bring a drink and wear suitable footwear and shin pads. Trials will take place at the Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park, Bawtry Road, Sheffield S9 1UA on: Saturday 7 June and Saturday 21 June: 10.30am - 12:00pm for Under 9s to Under 13’s. 1.00pm - 2.30pm for Under 14’s to Under 18’s Sunday 8 June and Sunday 22 June 2.00pm to 4.00pm for three levels of adult squads. Trials for Under 16’s & 18’s and adults will be held on 4G. Training for all teams will start in July so if you are unable to make the trial dates above there may still be chance for you to come along and get involved.
