Copley’s Column
Dronfield, my home town has had it’s busiest weekend of the year, with the CAMRA ‘Three Valleys’ beer festival, a regular event running all day on the Saturday with most local public houses taking part and all doing their bit providing numerous different beers and ciders, putting on some great live music. It seems the whole of the town’s population were out and about with buses provided to take them from pub to pub. All the beers were of a respectable strength, indeed some far too strong for my drinking capability, and it is notable that no trouble was reported on this highly alcohol fuelled day. Most of the regular local artistes and bands were on parade at various venues, including The Score, Acoustic Lily, Riff Raff, Chris Paul and my local, the Victoria having the excellent Irish guy, J.J.Galway, a particular favourite of mine. I was not out during the day as I wanted to pace myself for the evening at the Yew Tree for the monthly residency of Junkyard Dog, fronted by Russ Dennett, who had earlier appeared with his duo Acoustic Lily with Hannah Lily making it two gigs in the day. Russ, with his customary wit, thanked the audience for attending in spite of stiff competition from the nearby Proact Stadium in Chesterfield where the veteran legendary entertainer, Sir Tom Jones entertained a full house. The concert had mixed reviews from pals of mine who attended. Mosborough Music Festival, which I regrettably was unable to attend was by all accounts its’ usual huge success. One disturbing story to emerge from the Tom Jones came from local top female vocalist Emma Rossi, who along with partner Doug Agar and six friends spent four hundred and eighty pounds for premium seats. As it was the stars’ birthday on the night of the concert they had a banner wishing him a happy birthday, a very nice gesture in my opinion. However, this was not shared by the over officious security staff, who went six handed to throw three of them out, including Emma and Doug after the second song of the evening.
This story is very disturbing and Chesterfield Football Club should have a serious think about using the company, who I choose not to mention publically, for future events. For my part, I shall be making the football club aware of the occurrence. I have to say that I have known Emma and Doug for many years, during which time their behaviour has been exemplary and are definite the innocent parties in the whole affair and shall be inviting the football club to reimburse them their entrance money as a token of goodwill. I shall of course report their response. As I am now entering the final ten weeks of my journalistic career, this is the last chance for any charity wanting a bit of free publicity. My new e- mail address is hcopley11@gmail.com

INDIE ROCKERS SET TO BECOME TOWN MOOR CHIEFS
Doncaster Racecourse is predicting a riot as triple Brit Award winning band Kaiser Chiefs arrive at the Town Moor track on Saturday, June 28 after racing. The critically acclaimed Leeds-based band, best known for the anthemic top ten hit I Predict A Riot, and the number one hit single Ruby, will take to the stage to perform a string of UK hit singles as well as new tracks from their fifth studio album Education, Education, Education & War which was released earlier this year. Kaiser Chiefs comprise lead vocalist Ricky Wilson – who recently graced our TV screens on BBC One talent show The Voice - guitarist Andrew “Whitey” White, bassist Simon Rix, keyboardist Nick “Peanut” Baines and current drummer Vijay Mistry. Mark Spincer, managing director at Doncaster Racecourse said the gig, one of three music events taking place at the Town Moor over the summer months, was a real coup for the venue and for the town: “We are delighted to announce that the fantastic Kaiser Chiefs, who are currently enjoying a revival with the release of a new album, are the second big name music act to take to the stage to perform at the Town Moor over the summer months. “Their memorable hits are guaranteed to get the crowds singing and rocking along. Hailing from Yorkshire, they’re bound to strike a chord with music lovers in Doncaster and beyond. We’re expecting large crowds for a great day’s racing and some top-class entertainment.” Last year Doncaster Racecourse attracted some 40,000 people to its summer concerts which saw The Saturdays, Lawson, Ronan Keating and Scouting for Girls take to the stage over three events. The Town Moor track recently had legendary rockers Status Quo perform live after racing in May and James Blunt will take to the stage on Saturday August 16. Music and horse racing fans alike are being urged to book tickets as soon as possible for what is predicted to be a sell-out event. Adult tickets start from just £31, children’s tickets are £11. Hospitality options available from £103.20. All tickets and hospitality for the event include racing followed by Kaiser Chiefs live after racing. For more information about racing and events at Doncaster Racecourse, visit www.doncasterracecourse.co.uk or to buy tickets, call 01302 304 200.

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
The Mystery Of The Runes The Runes are Viking symbols, carved into rock, wood or metal. Originally they were the Nordic alphabet, and traditionally in astrology they have become another way of helping us foretell the future. Like crystal and all natural materials, when used properly runes vibrate to a Universal energy. Using the runes as a divination tool requires tapping into the harmonious vibrations, and interpreting the message that is received. As with all tools, each psychic will probably have a favourite set- I keep my own in a purple velvet pouch, together with a black velvet cloth to lay them out on, and each rune is inscribed on a piece of crystal stone. Empowering your Runes In order to empower the runes they must be charged with the psychic’s own vibrations. By carrying them at all times, touching them occasionally and even sleeping with them under the mattress, the individual’s own energies are transferred to the runes. It is then necessary to empower the runes’ natural energy. This is done by leaving them in the midday sunlight, and also by ensuring they spend the night under the rays of a full moon. Finally copy each of the runes to apiece of paper, which should then be burned or buried in the open air. The runes will be ready to use. Each rune has a keyword which forms a key part of a reading. This week I will list the ten most prominent keywords, and also a fuller explanation of five of them, as an indication of what the runes can foretell: Wyrd - destiny Uruz - strength Thurisaz - challenge
Ansu - message Raido - Journey Perth - secret Beorc - new beginnings Ing - accomplishment Eihaw - decision Gebo - relationship
A fuller explanation of some of these; Perth - a secret. This rune is known as the mystery rune. Perth indicates that its time to uncover the truth. Ansu - messages. Communication will help you pursue your dreams. Talk, learn and listen to gain wisdom. A life-changing surprise may be on its way. Beorc- new beginnings. Usually an indication that it is time to let go of emotional baggage and past regrets. Get cracking and plan your new beginnings. Raido - Journey. Travel is favoured and this may lead to a spiritual journey. Opportunities must be taken to make a fresh start. Eihaw - decision. Decisive action must be taken, and the chance must be taken to change your life.

“SOCIAL CARE CAP” CONCERNS IN NEW STUDY • New report from IFoA is the first to look at long term care funding in new flexible pensions regime • Care cap will offer a safety net that will prevent individuals from facing catastrophic care costs. It will not replace savings as the key means of paying for care • There are significant regional variations in expected care costs and the time it is expected to take for the care cap to apply • There is no unique product that is suitable for all consumer long term care needs • Proposed new Pension Care Fund (PCF) could help people to save for long term care A new report, “How pensions can help meet consumer needs under the new social care regime” issued by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) finds that just 8% of men and 15% of women entering care aged 85 today are likely to reach the new social care cap that is being introduced in 2016. There are three types of care costs: daily living costs; local authority set care costs; and top-up care costs. The cap only applies in relation to local authority set care costs. The report found that, although the cap is set at £72,000, on average people are expected to spend around £140,000 on care costs before reaching it, which can increase to around £250,000, even allowing for the cap, if an individual is in long term care for 10
CARE HOME OPEN DAY
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has announced it is supporting the second National Care Home Open Day on Friday 20 June 2014. Care homes across the country will open their doors to visitors, inviting local people to meet residents and learn more about care homes. One of the primary aims of the day is to encourage better links between care homes and the communities in which they operate. Last year over 150 CQC inspectors attended care homes across the country, using the opportunity to engage with local people, and increase public awareness and understanding of their role. This year, in addition to the participation of inspectors in the Open Day, CQC staff will also be attending a care home close to them. For Care Homes taking part see website: www.nationalcarehomeopenday.org.uk

years. However, it also found significant regional variations in expected care costs and the time it is expected to take for the care cap to apply. • London: an individual entering a residential care home aged 85 is expected to reach the cap in around 4 years and incur a personal cost of around £117,000 before reaching the cap. • West Midlands: an individual entering a residential care home aged 85 is expected to reach the cap in around 7 years and incur a personal cost of around £170,000 before reaching the cap. NB: The cost of care in London is higher than in the West Midlands, but the time taken to reach the cap is shorter which has a dampening effect on the total personal costs incurred. The cap, which is planned to be set initially at £72,000, will, the IFoA says, act as a safety net that will prevent individuals from facing catastrophic care costs. However, it will not offset or replace savings as a key means of funding care. The IFoA believe that message needs to be made clear by all parties involved in advising and planning for later life income needs and long term care, including the Government and the financial services industry. Thomas Kenny, one of the authors of the IFoA’s report said; “Recent research data shows that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men aged 65 today is likely to need care. Yet the average
disposable income for retired households was £18,700 in 2011/12, which is below the level required to fund the average long term care costs before reaching the cap. Anyone who is expecting that the cap will pay for care is in for a shock. The cap is there to protect against catastrophic care costs and we estimate that few people entering care aged 85 years will reach it. “Second to property, pensions are the largest wealth asset for most people. Pensions are largely understood, there is an existing savings framework for them and, with the right tax incentives and flexibility, there are products that could help people to meet any care needs that they may have in the future. However, we also found that there is no silver bullet – no one product that would suit everyone’s personal circumstances to help them meet care costs. In the report we consider a number of existing and new products which, with the right tax incentives, could help people plan ahead, including a new Pension Care Fund.” The Pension Care Fund (PCF) would be a ring fenced long term care savings fund that would sit within the framework of a defined contribution pension scheme. The savings would be treated for tax purposes like a pension and any money accumulated that was not used to fund care could be passed on, free of inheritance tax, for use as a long term care fund by a spouse or other beneficiary.

SOURCE STAFF RAISE MONEY FOR SHEFFIELD RAPE CRISIS CHARITY Staff from The Source Skills Academy have been raising money for Sheffield Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre, a service offering free and confidential support to women and girls who have experienced rape or sexual abuse. Zara-Louise Gold-Manyou is on the charity committee at The Source and nominated SRASAC to benefit from fundraising after hearing about the invaluable support they provided to a friend of a friend. Staff at The Source have been taking part in a variety of activities including a non-uniform day, Ben Nevis climb, sponsored lent challenge and raffle and raised a fantastic £855.55 for the charity. Chris Scarlett, Chair of Trustees at the charity, said
“We are delighted with the generous donation from The Source. It’s great to see a company who are confronting the issue of rape and sexual abuse as it’s still a subject which a lot of people don’t like to talk about. To put the donation into perspective, that amount of money will pay for 26 free counselling sessions for our clients or for 3 of our helpline volunteers to go on training weekends” Zara-Louise Gold-Manyou, Recruitment Supervisor, said “I am delighted that the SRASAC were chosen to receive this donation from the company as it is such an important cause and supports local girls and women right here in this region”. IS THE STRESS OF MOVING HOUSE TOO MUCH TO HANDLE? They say, that moving house, can be one of the most stressful things you can do. The added stress of getting mortgages, paying stamp duty and the ever fluctuating price of property doesn’t help! We caught up with Wosskow Brown’s expert Property team to get their top-tips on keeping stress to a minimum. Expert advisor, John Knight says getting the best advice is key, whether that’s an expert surveyor a trusted mortgage advisor or an experienced Estate Agent, the more information you can get, the better. “Many people don’t realise how many things there are to consider when buying or selling their properties. The hidden costs, such as building repairs, house insurance and even paying for your wheelie bins, are easy to underestimate.” When you find your dream home, it’s always important to think practically about the costs and long term commitment in looking after your home. The first thing to consider is “How much can I afford?” Obtaining sound advice is the first obstacle to having your new home. If you are applying for a mortgage, your mortgage lender will carry out an independent valuation of the property. Usually this will be added to your charges, and remember that this is a valuation for mortgage purposes and not a survey. It is your responsibility to obtain a proper survey before deciding to purchase a property. If the surveyor reports that repairs to the building are required, inform your solicitor and mortgage advisor. In some circumstances you can
attempt to re-negotiate your offer and secure the property at a more realistic value. Whilst, the housing market is ever-changing, often the stress from moving house comes from uncertainty from you or the other parties involved in the transaction. Often, if information is not relayed back quickly enough, it can be difficult to know what’s going on. Where many struggle, is deciding when and how to start actually packing and booking removal vans. Once your solicitor has finalised the terms of the contract and thoroughly explained them to you, you will need to sign the contract and arrange for your deposit to be paid. This is 10% of the purchase price of your property. Once this has been done on both sides, contracts can be exchanged, and this is when a date will be set for completion. Most removal companies are a dab-hand at the ins and outs of moving home. It’s always worth shopping around and getting different quotes. Some companies will be able to meet your needs better than others. Once your solicitor has set a date for completion you should confirm this with your removal company straight away. At this point, you may also want to consider informing all of your contacts and suppliers that you are moving. Not informing councils and energy companies can be very negative and often lead to disputes in bills. Always take meter readings on the day you move to avoid disputes occurring. The best thing is to do is comprise yourself a list of everyone and everything you will need to change your address on. Common things that get missed are things such as DVLA and Car Insurance, or Banks/Building societies for savings accounts. Moving house from a legal point of view does not have to be stressful. Wosskow Brown will remove as much of the hassle as possible and allow you to enjoy your big day. For further advice, you can contact the Wosskow Brown conveyancing team on 0114 256 6550.

BOOST FOR SHEFFIELD’S NEW RETAIL QUARTER A significant decision to take Sheffield’s New Retail Quarter forward to become a reality has been taken this week. The Council is committed to moving the New Retail Quarter scheme forward and has set out an ambitious programme that targets completion in 2019 with any remaining phases being completed in 2020. The options for structuring the property deal are being finalised and will be presented to Cabinet for approval. The Council may now consider whether to work up the project to create an investment opportunity and either find a forward sale with interim funding or fund the scheme directly. Leader of Sheffield City Council, Cllr Julie Dore has signed-off a report to allow the Council to secure properties needed to develop the New Retail Quarter. The properties have been subject to the compulsory purchase process for several years when the former developer, Hammerson was planning to develop the scheme. Following the lengthy delays caused by the economic recession and being unable to gain a commitment for the work to begin, the Council severed links with Hammerson at the end of last year. It will now secure property in the area enabling a new development partner to bring the scheme to fruition alongside the Council. Further decisions will need to be taken in July about the full delivery process. Discussions are taking place with each of the affected property owners and they will be given the option to stay in their current premises until needed for the development to commence. Councillor Leigh Bramall, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Business, Skills and Development said: “We are fully committed to moving the development of the New Retail Quarter forward urgently now and this decision to secure the ownership of the properties needed for the development is key to making this happen. “We are also conscious that the existing businesses should be able to continue to trade in their current premises whenever possible to ensure the area remains attractive to shoppers during this crucial period of transition. ”The New Retail Quarter is a crucial element in the regeneration of the city centre and for the economic development of Sheffield, including the provision of around 2,500 new jobs. It sits alongside other important new developments on The Moor and the
Castlegate area that will build on the successful schemes already completed in the Heart of the City.” The acquisition of property in the development area will amount to around £55 million and this would be recovered by the value created in the development on completion of the scheme. Councillor Ben Curran, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources added: “The New Retail Quarter is a key part of our vision to give Sheffield a high-class retail offer that can compete with Manchester, Leeds and Nottingham. “This is a significant investment and emphasises the council’s determination to enable the New Retail Quarter to move forward. “Once completed, the New Retail Quarter will help to improve the status of the city and will
help to stimulate future office, commercial and leisure opportunities in Sheffield city centre. This development will bring significant external investment into the city as well as giving a massive boost to the city centre’s retail offer." Richard Wright, Executive Director of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry commented: “The Chamber is absolutely delighted to see such a positive move on this project. It is a critical development for the city and we applaud the extremely positive message this sends and the ambitious timescale it lays out. “We are hoping to see something distinctive, world leading and fit for purpose in 15 years ahead. This is a great opportunity for us."

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques
This week it was our birthday - we’ve been broadcasting to hospital patients in Rotherham for 36 years. Hospital radio first began back in the 1920’s when broadcasts were only football commentaries. A hospital radio station for the Rotherham District General Hospital was the result of two years planning and research but in 1978 Radio Nightingale was born. The station was not named after Florence Nightingale as many presume, but in memory of Elizabeth Nightingale who had donated the then princely sum of £1,000 to the Moorgate Hospital to set up a radio station following her hospital stay. The transfer of hospital services to Rotherham District General Hospital took place before the station was off the ground. A plea for volunteers was placed in the Rotherham Advertiser in February 1978 and people came forward. After just three months of training, the original Nightingale crew went on air on 4 June 1978; Dave Marriott was the first Radio Nightingale presenter at 7pm. Originally broadcasts were restricted to three evenings a week and Sunday mornings, expanding over the years until in the late ‘90s we were broadcasting all day, every day. At first the broadcasts were only to the patients of the Rotherham District General Hospital by way of the bedside headset units. Over the years broadcast methods of have changed and we now broadcast on 945 and 1350mw, Hospedia and online.

BEAUTIFUL GAME MAGIC AM with Glenn Pinder
So many eyes will be focused on Brazil soon where lots of grown men a kick a round thing up and down a field over the course of the next few weeks. For those that have been on some other planet for goodness knows how long, it is the World Cup and it seems the world litterally has gone mad for it as it always does. I mean supermarkets selling lots of beer, fairly standard through the summer, but one chain has reported record sales on TVs. ‘Did all those people not have a tv in the first place?’ asked my wife. ‘No’ I replied ‘not one in the back room anyway! Most partners will be banished to the spare room/ TV to either watch football or the regular dose of Soap Operas’. To which she replied ‘well you better get one for the back room then if you want to watch it!’. Cheers love. On a final note not about said football competition, I see Monty Python have recorded a new version of Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life as an unofficial England World Cup anthem. Eric Idle has written a new verse for the song, to console fans if and when the team crash out. It’s good to see he has as much faith in national team as the rest of us then. She’s one of the most successful country music artists of all time, responsible for composing over 3000 songs, covering a whopping forty-one top ten country albums, we’re talking the one and only Dolly Parton and if you would like to try and win tickets to see her live, listen thursday morning at around 8:20am for details. Hoping you can join me for breakfast weekday mornings on Magic AM from 6 - 10am and across the day. Listen on 990, 1305, 1548 AM, Digital Radio and online at magicam.co.uk for just great songs.
CHIANG MAI SOCIAL CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
I often mention here how proud we are to have readers and contributors in quite far flung places. We recently heard about a ‘club’ out in Thailand- the Chiang Mai Social. I say a club but, as Mr Spock on Star Trek might say, ‘not as we know it, Jim.’ It is not fixed to one place, does not have its own club building nor an official list of members. But it has all the great elements of a club. It began as a group of people meeting up for socials in 2013 such as dining out together. They were gradually joined by other Chiang Mai Thais and ex-pats so the group expanded and the ‘Chiang Mai Social’ was born! The group is proud of its diversity and appeal with members of many nationalities, different ages, single and married people. ‘Members of the Chiang Mai Social are extremely friendly and welcoming, it has regular monthly meetings held in various restaurants, which are always very well attended and supported.’ Ex-pats who have recently moved to the area can join in, meet people and become more involved in socials. Local Thai people are part of the crowdit’s definitely not just ex-pat. It’s a local network for social interaction with people who know each other but who are welcoming of others who want to join in. Chiang Mai Social offers an opportunity to meet other people, have a good old chat, enhance your social life and make new friends. That sounds very similar to the original club ideal of providing a place for ‘social discourse’ as CIU founder the Reverend Henry Solly would have said. Thailand wasn’t on his agenda but what people want the world over once they have a roof over their head and food in their belly is a bit of social life. A social clubs helps to reduce social isolation and loneliness, just as our own clubs do here in Blighty. ‘Chiang Mai Social is about dining out, social gatherings, keeping the art of conversation alive and well, sharing travel stories, food, special topics, coffee & tea, and more. There are no fees for joining.’ They are doing a good job in bringing different people together for some nice times. Club Historians would like to thank Anthony Steel for bringing this club to our attention. Even though they do not have their own premises it shows that the community spirit can thrive around the world and help to break down barriers.

The ultimate Download preview 26
By Kt Evans
It’s finally arrived. After months of holding out for arguably the best rock / metal / hardcore / alternative festival ever to grace planet Earth, Download 2014 is back with a vengeance from 13th-15th June at Donnington Park. With their strongest line-up to date (not to mention a host of Sheffield groups flying the flag for our steel city) M-Live are here to bring you the ultimate preview of the weekend of the year… What is so special about a music festival? Firstly, the discovery of a host of brand spanking new bands and acts of which you just so happen to ‘stumble’ across. The beauty of this three day event is exactly that… exploration into genres, music preferences and hidden gems, allowing not only a sterling platform for bands, but the most effective adventure for music fans aswell. Secondly, watching some of your most favourable acts take to a totally sold out Download festival stage is a feeling you simply cannot match. We’ve seen the likes of Slipknot, Megadeth, Black Sabbath and 30 Seconds To Mars seize the main stage with tremendous effect, moments hard to forget for music lovers anywhere. But to 2014… This year, Download Festival has spiced up it’s line-up with bands travelling from across the world to grab one of the most sought after slots on the musical calendar. Music on Friday 13th doesn’t start until 13.00pm (giving us all that little bit of extra time to attempt to erect out single skinned tents…oops) therefore our pick of Friday openers goes to Miss May I on the main stage. Everything that you could possibly imagine a post hardcore clan should be, the five piece released their fourth album ‘Rise Of The Lion’ back in April 2014 and are bolstering up for the performance of their lives. The Pepsi Max Stage at Download Festival once again has a stupidly strong line-up, with our pick of Friday going to The Amity Affliction at 16.15pm. A twisted rollercoaster of personally emotive lyrics, this hardcore brigade are all about their live show. “Let The Ocean Take Me” is the group’s recent album, released on 9th July, easily the most powerful record to date. For fans of gritty hardcore, you certainly don’t want to be missing The Amity Affliction. Headlining Friday 13th on the main stage is awarded to Avenged Sevenfold at 21.00pm. Without a doubt one of the most infamous rock bands of all time, the Californian five piece have smashed into number one chart positions across the world. No strangers to the international stages of rock, the group have produced hits such as “Nightmare,” “Hail To The King” and “Welcome To The Family,” killer tracks from the bands gigantic back catalogue. Expect massive from one of rock’s most legendary groups! Although a crippling hangover may now have taken hold of you on Saturday 14th, powering through is a must as the second day of Download is arguably the strongest of the three days. In dedication of Sheffield, While She Sleeps on the main stage at 13.55pm are ready to play the set of their lives. With their debut album “This Is The Six” taking them into the UK official album charts top 10, the Sheffield post hardcorians are working on new material…are we to expect brand new songs woven into their set? We’ll just have to wait and see! Yet another Sheffield hardcore group, Bring Me The Horizon at 17.40pm on the main stage are set to explode Download. Their 2013 album “Sempiternal” drove the group to the stratosphere and back, safeguarding the five piece as one of the most successful alternative bands in the UK at the moment. Having introduced a more electronic sound into their recordings, the

beauty of Bring Me The Horizon is their atmospheric live performance. Ones not to be missed. Marmozets on the Pepsi Maxx stage at 14.45pm are a group with a massive future banging on their front door. Stemming from Leeds, their debut album is set for release in September and has already caused a serious stir in the Radio 1 camp. A mixture of hardcore vs alt vs math core hits, the five piece are our pick of Saturday 14th. To the final day of festival madness, Sunday 15th is a day of absolute heroes. Headlined by no other than Aerosmith at 21.15pm (just… wow) there are also a host of bands littering the day with their own personal pockets of
musical mayhem. We can’t quite believe we will get to witness the return of Suicide Silence on the Pepsi Maxx stage at 19.00pm; since the loss of their vocalist Mitch Lucker in 2012, the group are back with new vocalist Eddie Hermida to show the world what they are made of. Steel Panther on the main stage at 17.40pm are a band with…erm…balls. But really, with song titles “Gloryhole,” “Pussy Whipped” and “Gangbang At The Old Folks Home,” this outrageous lot will unquestionably be the talk of the entire weekend…oh Jesus. Visit www.downloadfestival.co.uk for the full line-up at Download Festival 2014.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker
I’ve recently rejoined Derby based club The Earl of Harrington’s AC after learning that they have successfully expanded their portfolio of waters to include five superb park lakes in addition to numerous other quality venues. This week, I took my second trip to Allestree Park in the heart of Derby to try and tempt some of the bream which reside within... Park Lakes can be hit and miss when it comes to results; many have been pillaged over the years, neglected by councils facing endless funding cuts and abused by those who don’t see them as an asset, but some are hidden gems, full of unknown wonders which can offer ample reward for the angler. Allestree covers around seven acres and has some immense shoals of bream which are well worth targeting, there are quality tench in abundance, dark backed scaley carp and a few other surprises yet to be discovered; seen, but not yet caught! My approach was simple; a light quivertip rod, cage feeder and fairly long hook link, the feeder packed with the new Marukyu Sweet Fishmeal groundbait and maggots on the hook. A few casts to get some bait down quickly, and then a turn of the reel handle to put a gentle curve in the tip

and I settled down to wait. Bream fishing can be time consuming; the fish often lead a nomadic existence travelling around their favoured patrol routes, stopping only long enough to hoover up any feed then moving on, so getting them to stay in one place can be difficult unless there is enough food to keep them occupied. Every ten minutes, a recast ensured a bit more attraction in the swim, and after an hour, I started to see odd rolling fish and got a few twitches on the ‘tip as deep bodied bream brushed against the line...then it wrenched over and I was into my first fish. The expected ‘wet sock’ battle ensued, but within a minute or two, a plump bream of around 4lbs lay in the net...hopefully the first of many. I missed a few bites, then bounced a fish off which can be enough to spook the shoal if you are unlucky, so after adjusting the hook link and still missing bites, the method feeder seemed like a good idea. I like to use a small Preston match type feeder with a mould; it keeps things tidy and when I’m casting clipped up, a consistent weight makes it much easier to put the bait on the right spot. Again, the feeder was loaded with the Sweet Fishmeal groundbait and three maggots on the hook before casting to the clip. Feathering the cast and plunging the rod tip under water sinks the line quickly and ensures I stay in constant contact with the baited rig until
it hit the lake bed as when fishing the method, it can sometimes bring instant results and it’s important to be in control. The bites came steadily for the remainder of the morning before the shoal decided to move on. I’d managed to land around fifteen decent bream to 4lbs, five tip top tincas to almost 5lbs and a bonus mirror carp of 16lbs 15oz. Most of the fish fell to maggot, although all but one tench preferred Marukyu strawberry 10mm boilies which were used as a change bait when thing slowed... Overall, it was an excellent session on a water which is already starting to signs of improvement under the new management. The venue is lovely, the tactics were simple and the fishing fun...what more could you ask for? Find out more at www.theearlofharringtonsac.co.uk

NIGEL CLOUGH RYAN DELIGHTED TO CROASDALE RESIGN DUO Nigel Clough says he is pleased to have finally secured the services of Ben Davies and Chris Porter for the forthcoming Sky Bet League One campaign. The former Derby County duo both signed one-year deals on Monday and Clough says the Blades had little hesitation in offering new terms to both players, citing reliability and experience as two main factors behind retaining the pair. Clough commented on what 33-year-old Davies will add to the squad this time around: “We are very pleased to have secured the services of Ben for next season. The impact and contribution he made in the second-half of last season was very good. “Ben is experienced and a good character, we don’t have to worry about him, he will look after himself and just come in and get on with his job. “The crowd appreciate his qualities last season and we had to fight off competition to make sure Ben decide to prolong his stay here. “We always wanted to keep him and his versatility will prove invaluable again as it did last season. “Ben’s preferred position is on the left of midfield, but he has the quality to be an asset in any position he plays and he will do a job wherever you ask him to play.” Meanwhile, Clough says Porter will be another valuable squad member in the months ahead: “In our squad of 19 or 20 we need reliable, experienced performers and Chris certainly comes into that category. “Chris has divided opinion amongst supporters in recent seasons, but he certainly won plenty over in the second half of last season and was instrumental to our FA Cup success. “Fans can also not argue with his goals return since the turn of the year and we are confident he can replicate that ratio over a full season. “He will want to start a lot more games than he did towards the end of the season, but he will always get you a goal, either if he starts or comes on from the bench.”
MILLERS RECRUITMENT DRIVE CONTINUES Steve Evans has returned from a flying visit to his native Scotland and confirmed that work continues at pace as he continues to put together his squad for next season. Having made offers to three of his squad who are out of contract from last season, Evans confirmed that both Kari Arnason and Mark Bradley have expressed a desire to stay with the Millers, whilst talks are continuing with striker Wes Thomas. “Late on Friday Kari Arnason indicated he would like to stay at Rotherham United so obviously I am delighted,” Evans told www.themillers.co.uk “The big man has been excellent for me for two consecutive seasons, helping us to promotion in both and he has played a key part in that achievement. “Mark Bradley has also indicated the same so that is further good news. In relation to Wes Thomas I understand talks continue and we will see where that lands in the next few days too.” After already securing the signatures of Conor Newton, Matt Derbyshire and Scott Loach, the Millers boss has confirmed that he is hopeful of
EX OWL & ROVER DEAN JOINS OWLS BARRICK BAGS SENIOR TROPHY
Sheffield Wednesday have signed central midfielder Ryan Croasdale. The Preston academy graduate has penned a oneyear deal at Hillsborough from 1 July. Croasdale has been involved in the youth set-up at Deepdale since the age of eight and progressed through the ranks before signing his first professional contract in May 2013. Having captained the Under-18s at just 16-yearsold, Croasdale went on to make his debut for the Lilywhites in October 2013 in North End’s JP Trophy clash with Oldham. The youngster gained further first team experience last season in loan spells at Tamworth and Stalybridge Celtic. Owls academy manager Dean Ramsdale, who offered Croasdale scholarship terms during his time as Director of Youth Development at Preston, is delighted the midfielder has linked up with Wednesday. He said: “I’ve known Ryan a long time and I’m really pleased that he has joined us. “He is a very talented and technically gifted player and fortunately for us, he will be with us for the next year, as I know other clubs were interested. “He is a box to box central midfield, he’s a winner, he’s determined and I’m delighted he has signed.”
adding to his squad next week. “First let me say now that our supporters should not listen to rumour or perhaps what they read, agents work in many different ways. An example of that is Rotherham United being widely linked to a defender from a League One club. He is a fine defender but there is no truth in this, we have our specific targets. “I am hopeful we will add to our squad in the next few days but there are still a few things to be sorted out before that can happen. Our targets are very much aware of our interest, a number of them have met with myself on a number of occasions already. “In addition we also have a number of offers made to other clubs for certain players and it will be in the next few days that we will establish what is happening in relation to them. I would expect to have added to our squad this week; hopefully those new players can come in with the same desire to succeed as the lads we have kept. “As for players leaving, we all wish young Danny Hylton every success at Oxford United. David Worrall is the only other player who will leave and there is a lot of interest in him so we will see where that goes too. “This is a great time to be at Rotherham United, what a season we have to look forward to. The Championship has some fantastic football clubs and great players; we look forward to the challenges that will bring.”
As Roy Hodgson’s England side step up their World Cup preparations in Brazil ahead of Saturday’s Group D game against Italy, they could take inspiration from their older – if not wiser – counterparts. Led by former Rovers left back Dean Barrick – who made 68 appearances for Doncaster between 20012003 – the England seniors side won the World Cup in Thailand by beating Scotland on penalties. Barrick, who also had spells with Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham United, was representing the Harrogate Veterans, who play on behalf of the national side and took to social media to speak of his delight, “Winning a world cup on my fathers 70th birthday is an amazing feeling. I can’t emphasise enough what my parents support throughout my career meant to me. Also very special to win it with 4 ex team mates who all remember them,” he said. Tributes to Barrick’s achievement poured in from a variety of well-wishers including ex-teammate Tim Ryan who said, “It’s a big achievement for Dean, he’s obviously still very fit to play at that level, so full credit to him.”
