Celebrity breakfast, a wonderful time for me, had a change in personnel this week with Bernie Clifton playing his trombone in the England Band at the World Cup finals in Brazil and Bobby Knutt recovering from surgery on his shoulder. However we had more than adequate replacements in the form of Bobby Dennis Bradford and his lovely wife Mary, and his sister, the multi -talented Caroline Dennis and their guest, Paul Stevens. They had come to celebrate the eighty eighth birthday of their father, veteran comedian Bobby Dennis. Bobby junior and Mary had come over from Australia while Caroline had travelled from her home in London. Family friend Paul Stevens, who older readers will remember from his days as the first compere at the Sheffield Fiesta Club. Paul went on to be the golf caddy for some of the world’s greatest golfers, the highlight of which was carrying the bag for Tom Watson when he won the Australia Open. We had a great morning with my close friend Bobby Dennis being his usual life and soul of the party with his boundless energy. It is fifteen years since the Dronfield Charity Music Festival began, and this year it is re-branded under the title of Dronfest Rhythm and Boots 2014, and returning to its’ original home, behind the Coach and Horses, Dronfield on Sunday 3rd August at noon. Eighteen acts have agreed to appear on the Main Stage and the Acoustic tent. Headlining the main stage are the excellent Acoustic Angels, fronted by the marvellous John Reilly. Another of my favourite bands, Junkyard Dog, with ex Human League band memer, Russ Dennett. A full comprehensive list of all artistes and bands appearing can be obtained from wwwdronfest.co.uk. I should like to pay tribute to my

old pal John Aspinall for his tireless work and effort in once again organising this showpiece event I mentioned last week that if any worthy charities needed a bit of free publicity from me in my last couple of months on here, I would be happy to oblige and as a result I received an e-mail from Martin Hurd, bass player with the G Men Soul Band, who as well as promising me a pint in the Yew Tree, who asked for a mention for a charity night to beneﬁt Rotherham Hospice. The event is to be held at Dalton Progressive and features Barry Cheese, his former comedy partner Mick Onion and his band ‘Still Crazy’, Gina Ross and compere Neil Lane. This will be the ﬁrst time that Cheese and Onion have worked together since the late 1980’s. Tickets are selling fast but there is expected to be some to be sold on the door on the night, which will be cracking entertainment.

With its grand launch party this Friday, live music fans from all around The Mercury region are seeking out the new Diamond Live Lounge. Formerly known as Camelots and Reloaders, the Diamond Live Lounge now incorporates a full length licensed bar which looks spectacular in this former church building. There is also an “Ibiza style” mezzanine DJ ﬂoor and a welcoming VIP area. The existing church roof has helped to create great acoustics, enhanced by a bespoke sound system specially designed by local engineers. And these acoustics will be appreciated by music fans on many occasions as the Diamond Live Lounge will be presenting live acts every Friday, presenting the best live acts from right across The Mercury region as well as some of the biggest names from further aﬁeld. ADULT LEARNERS TOP OF CLASS IGNITE IMAGINATIONS LAUNCH EVENT For most adults writing essays and studying for exams is a thing of the past but the achievements of a host of people who have gone back to learning in later life will be celebrated at a special awards ceremony. The Sheffield Adult Learners’ Week Awards have been organised by Sheffield City Council’s Lifelong Learning, Skills and Communities department to recognise the hard work and commitment of people who have learnt new skills or gained qualifications in later life. The ceremony will take place at Sheffield Town Hall between 5.30pm and 7.30pm on Thursday 19 June and will be the highlight of Adult Learners’ Week, which runs nationally from 14 to 20 June 2014. People looking for new learning opportunities can also attend a Showcasing Adult Learning fair between 2pm and 4pm at the Town Hall on 19 June, which aims to show adults the importance of continuing to learn throughout their lives to improve their wellbeing, confidence and opportunities. Council partners and educational providers will be promoting ways of accessing adult learning courses. Councillor Jackie Drayton said: “I am passionate about supporting people who want to return to education in later life as it’s something I did myself. Adult Learners Week is a great source of information and inspiration for people who want to go back to college or university or even take on voluntary roles to broaden their skills and opportunities. I’m sure the awards ceremony will be the highlight of the day and I wish all the nominees the best of luck. I hope they inspire other people to tackle new learning opportunities too.” More than 30 groups and 60 individuals

have been nominated in two award categories at the Sheffield Adult Learners’ Week Awards by third sector organisations who deliver adult learning opportunities in the city. Learners are also being encouraged to get creative by submitting drawings, poems, videos or written case studies to show how they, or their families, have benefitted from their learning experience. Prizes will be awarded to the best entries. The overall individual and family/group award winners will be awarded certificates by Jayne Ludlam, the council’s Executive Director of Children, Young People and Families. Maxine Bowler, learning manager for the Heeley Development Trust, will be exhibiting a stall at this year’s event and has also nominated top learners for the Sheffield Adult Learners’ Week Awards. She said: “We will be hosting a stall again at this year’s Adult Learners’ Week fair to help people find out how they can engage in adult learning courses and training sessions. It’s a fantastic community event which really helps inspire people from all walks of life who perhaps left education early or straight after school and don’t know about the fantastic opportunities out there for them now. The Shefﬁeld Motor Neurone Disorders Research Advisory Group (SMND RAG) brings together those affected by MND to inform research.

WHO WE ARE - Group members have all been affected by MND including patients, carers and family members. We are passionate about helping researcher’s improve patient care, better understand the disease and ultimately develop new treatments. WHAT WE DO - Our main activity to advise researchers from the Shefﬁeld Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), a state-of-the-art research centre dedicated to researching motor neurone disorders. We offer clinical and scientiﬁc researchers feedback on their research proposals, ideas to improve patient involvement and assistance in communicating their research to wider audiences. HOW WE DO IT - The group hold quarterly face-to-face meetings and keep in touch via monthly email updates. Researcher’s either submit written documents for group members to review or come to our meetings to directly discuss their research. SMND RAG has close links with the MND Association local branch to further aid research and share SITraN’s work with the wider community. A team from The Source Skills Academy have raised over £900 for Cancer Research UK by running the Race For Life. A team of employees and gym members entered the 5 kilometre Race for Life event on 8th June at Meadowhall and have raised over £900 for the fantastic cause. Back in March, choral group ALBION helped to launch the Yorkshire Festival 2014 - the first arts festival ever to precede the Grand Départ in its 111-year history - with a gala concert at Sheffield’s Millennium Gallery. And now, as the arrival of the Tour de France draws closer and the Festival comes to a climax, they are preparing to share a recording of that special occasion with the world. The concert featured a massed choir of more than 80 singers, members of choirs from across the city and beyond. It highlighted the importance of singing within Yorkshire’s cultural life, and showcased the many and varied voices that contribute to it. With the Grand Départ focussing the international spotlight very firmly on this region, the hour-long performance featured fifteen traditional songs from Britain and Ireland including Scarborough Fair and Jerusalem, performed in new arrangements for choir and piano by Albion’s artistic director, Fraser Wilson. Yorkshire-based sound engineer Shaun Trotter masterminded the technical aspects of the day. Logistics were complicated by having to fit the singers around the audience on all four sides of the venue, and Shaun devised an ingenious layout that ensured effective capture and playback of the many voices. It made a huge contribution to an event that was received very enthusiastically by both singers and audience. And now, with only weeks to go before race day, Albion are launching the newly mastered recording of this special occasion online, so that people from across the region, the UK, and the world can enjoy the results of this ‘Yorkshire born and bred’ event. Fraser Wilson said: “The concert in March was a really spectacular way to kick off the Festival, and we were delighted with how it came together so successfully. We had a sellout audience at the Millennium Gallery, but there will be many more people out there who love this music and will want to have a listen

to what we created.” The record will be launched two weeks before the Tour begins, on Saturday 21 June, and will be available up until race day. It will be downloadable free of charge, in a variety of formats, from www.albionchoir.org.uk.

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity Weekly Feature

DONCASTER MUM SUPPORTS CANCER CHARITY IN DAD’S MEMORY A dedicated mum from Doncaster raised over £2,000 for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity in memory of her dad. Tracey Smith (46) held a fundraising night at the Parklands Social Club in 2013, Wheatley Hall, where she has worked as a catering assistant for 7 years. Tracey’s dad, Anthony was diagnosed with a brain tumour in January 2012 and after receiving treatment at Weston Park Hospital, sadly lost his battle in November, aged 65. After collecting donations at the funeral, Tracey and her family and friends were inspired to continue raising money for Weston Park Hospital; the regions only cancer hospital. Tracey said, “We had such generous donations at my dad’s funeral that I was keen to continue fundraising in his memory.” “Although he can no longer be with us, it’s

great that we are able to make such a positive difference to other cancer patients across our region.” She continued, “Without the support of the Parklands Social Club, the fundraising nights wouldn’t have been possible. With drinks and a rafﬂe on the night, Tracey was overwhelmed by the support of the lounge members and club regulars, who all rallied together in support of her fundraising efforts. “With such a convenient and cooperative venue, I hope to raise plenty more money by supporting the charity’s latest initiative, For One Night Only, to ensure the standard of services at the hospital can continue.” To ensure that support for Weston Park Hospital can continue and to celebrate their 20th anniversary, Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is

encouraging social clubs from far and wide to come together ‘For One Night Only’ by holding a unique event of their choice. Charity representative, Tina Harrison said, “We are incredibly grateful to Tracey for collections at her dad’s funeral plus the organisation of fundraising nights in her local area. “We want as many clubs as possible to support us ‘For One Night Only’ and get involved in some friendly rivalry to see who can raise the most.” Tracey’s efforts will hopefully encourage more people to hold an event ‘For One Night Only’ for their local cancer hospital.”

WICKED CAMRA LAUNCHES SEARCH FOR BRITAIN’S WEDNESDAY MOST HISTORIC CLUBS

CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, have launched a search for Britain’s best heritage clubs. From backstreet working men’s clubs to plush Golf clubs, and everything in between, CAMRA want to identify clubs with historic interiors or those that were purpose-built and have remained largely unaltered. “There are some fantastic clubs all over the UK and we want to ﬁnd the ones with the best preserved interiors, either those in buildings which are of historic interest or which have remained unaltered since their construction – even if that was as recently as 1971.” John Holland, Chair of CAMRA’s Clubs Committee. CAMRA are known for their pub preservation initiatives and have campaigned for a number of years to preserve Britain’s historic pubs, with their book “Britain’s Best Real Heritage Pubs” being a consistent bestseller since publication last year. Whilst CAMRA campaigns all

over the country for high-quality real ales in clubs through the work of a dedicated Clubs Committee, they are keen to stress that this search is about the clubs heritage, not what beer is served. “We are always on the lookout for Clubs which serve excellent real ale, but this initiative is about more than beer, it is about discovering the hidden gems around the UK and helping preserve them for the future – regardless of what drinks they have behind the bar. It’s for this reason that we would encourage all clubs which think they are of historic interest to get in touch, no matter what beer you serve.” CAMRA’s annually published Good Beer Guide features clubs that serve real ale from right across the UK, and is available to buy from CAMRA directly and in all good book shops. Wicked Wednesday! What a name and what a night. The Central Club in Stainforth, near Doncaster has started a night of entertainment on Wednesdays that can only be described as good, old-fashioned clubland entertainment with a modern twist. The night begins with the resident band, Smokin’ Aces, playing the ﬁrst of their three sets. A lead vocalist backed by a keyboard and drummer with full backing harmonies, and all of it, totally live! The calibre of the musicians, Chris and Ashley Barton, and the experience they have, means that they can call upon their pool of different lead vocalists and provide consistently top class entertainment. Last week the vocalist in the resident band was “Big Daz” who entertained the audience with his rendition of Meatloaf classics and other rock numbers including songs from Bon Jovi and Toto. talent and popularity. Last week the audience were thrilled to be entertained by the fantastic Jennie Laine. With her unbounding energy and clear vocals, Jennie rocked the club. This week it was the turn of the talented Kelly Rox. Not only a beautiful vocalist with a wide repertoire, but a very talented musician as well. She entertained the audience with her range of music, some of which included her playing the guitar “unplugged”. Kelly made many friends and fans that night and once again delighted the audience so much that there was no time left for the last set from the resident band!! Fathers day came and went, always a strange day in my world as my dad passed away 20 years ago but the day always brings a smile to me face thinking of the great times we shared. My lad is only two so he has no idea what Fathers Day or means, I think every day is an adventure for him and seems to have fun whatever happens. Dads are/ will always be our heroes my dad was and always will be. I was talking on my show about that he’d been made me a picture at playschool and someone rang the show and said ‘you must be very proud?’, I answered yes of course, but then again I’m proud of him every day. They’re our kids and we’re in it for the long haul. Maybe when he’s trying to pull the TV off the stand or chase the dog round the house to give her a cuddle, those times can be challenging or drawing on the walls.... but then again I think if we all cast our minds back we all did some of that to our dads, it probably just slipped our minds ha! We’ve just passed the 152nd anniversary of the Working Men’s Club and Institute Union. Did anyone celebrate or was everyone watching England’s first World Cup game instead? June 14th is the day the CIU, as it’s usually referred to these days, set up shop in London. Without the CIU, hundreds of early Clubs would have foundered very quickly. Many still did but the CIU offered a framework of self-management and model rules. They also encouraged men considering setting up clubs for social discourse and mutual support for its members. CIU founder, Reverend Henry Solly, was committed to the ideals of selfimprovement and democracy for working men. He saw their harsh working and living conditions but felt they could do something to improve their lives in their leisure time- with a bit of help. The pub might have offered warmth, company and a comforting drink but too much time and money spent there left men poorer, ultimately no better off. Clubs were meant to be free of drink and the profittaking landlord, set up for their member’s benefit. Without his vision and efforts to attract support from high places, there might have been no CIU at all. There may have been several hundred clubs scattered across the country but probably not a national movement. The early patrons provided help and finance but were sometimes too interfering in the clubs, laying down the rules rather than the members. Having to put up with authority in all other areas of life, why should men accept this in their own clubs? Many soon cast aside patronage. Even Henry Solly had to accept defeat on the drink issue and step down from the CIU governing body. But many of his ideals survived and his club movement grew. He must have felt proud. For more than a hundred years the CIU expanded, with regional branches set up over the country. Governance of the CIU evolved and money was brought in through affiliation fees plus the sale of Associate and Pass cards. But since the mid-1970s, the club movement has been declining. Fewer clubs in the ‘Union’ meant less money in the coffers. Cutbacks have been the name of the game over the past decade as it adapts to a smaller number of clubsnow around 2000. Efforts are being made to survive, to keep Solly’s ideals and clubs alive but the future is uncertain. Perhaps another reason why there was little celebrating this past weekend.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

I’ve been back in Cheshire this week at Gawsworth Fisheries, one of my favourite day ticket waters, with an angling chum named Dan, just for some fun and a bit of a catch up... I had intended to fish for tench and crucian carp; the warm morning and abundant lilies just looked right, a slight dawn mist rising off the still water and pin sized bubbles fizzing everywhere...perfect?! Baiting with a ball of groundbait and dropping a handful of pellets over the top, I proceeded to tackle up my float rod with a small crystal waggler, dotted down until just the tip showed when the bait rested on the lake bed, and a size sixteen hook. For bait, I’m still on the excellent Marukyu groundbait range, now available in two kilo bags, a few Skrill (squid and krill) pellets, and then the versatile Credence Corn on the hook. This super resilient hookbait is resistant to the continued attentions of tiddlers, packed with attractors and can be used again and again without issue; I prefer to hair rig it, but it can be used directly on the hook. Within seconds of casting, the float started to

register interest as fish homed in on the bait; a dip below the surface and the first fish of the day was on the way to the waiting net! After unhooking, bream of around two pounds slipped back into the water and I dropped the float back on the spot...it happened again... and again...and again...and continued for the next hour! No tench or crucians, it was obvious I had a shoal of bream over the bait and nothing else was going to get a look in, so I decided to change tactics and moved to another pool.... I hadn’t fished this particular pool before, and when I asked an angler sitting behind alarms what was in the pool, I was told “.... carp.” (Sigh!) After taking yet more bream on the feeder, I decided that I fancied a go at fishing shallow, and firing maggots or pellets over the top as I’d seen a few flashes of gold which I took to be rudd..and I love rudd! Unsurprisingly, a few maggots quickly followed by my rig, resulted in numerous swirling boils as fish rushed in to pick off the maggots...my float dipped and a small bream (aaahhhhh!) came to the net. Over the next few minutes, I alternated between half a dozen maggots and a pinch of pellets to get the fish competing; every cast a bite, half of them hit, and a fish in the net. To mix

things up, I occasionally popped in a walnut sized ball of Marukyu Nori-G, a groundbait designed for silver fish which I mixed fairly wet to create a tempting green cloud in the surface layers Over the next couple of hours, I landed tench, gudgeon, roach, rudd, carp, crucians, brown goldfish, a single perch and a solitary barbel...and more bream..and some skimmers! Both Dan and I spent the afternoon relaxing in the sunshine, flicking out pinches of bait and enjoying the mayhem as the fish went just a little bit mad for our offerings. Between us we probably landed almost 100lbs of fish, and had a thoroughly nice time...why not go back to basics every now and then? It’s great fun!

A leading Sheffield based charity that specialises in training assistance dogs for children and adults with a wide range of conditions, will be appearing at Sheffield Wednesday’s annual family fun day, Owls in the Park. The event, that takes place at Hillsborough Park on Sunday 13 July, will see Sheffield charity, Support Dogs, carry out various activities and games to raise awareness and vital funds. As well stalls selling items for dogs and owners, Support Dogs will be running demonstrations with their dogs in training to showcase the range of skills used to increase the independence of people affected by autism, epilepsy and physical disability. The charity will also host the special ‘Support Dogs’ Dog Show’ which will let you enter your pet for contention in various categories including cutest pup, best trick and best biscuit catcher! Danny Anderson, Fundraising Manager at Support Dogs, said: “It’s fantastic that we’re able to come along to Owls in the Park for the third year running as it’s a great way for us to not only raise money but to also raise awareness of what we do. “The day is always really fun and this year, as the charity is set to do even more fun activities for guests, hopes to be the best one yet! “Thanks Sheffield Wednesday for again inviting the charity and we hope we see many of your pets entered into what is Sheffield’s largest dog show!” The day, which is hosted by Sheffield Wednesday and sponsored by the Brooklyn Steakhouse, is now in its third year and expected to attract thousands of people to the event. Along with appearances from Wednesday players, other activities include live music, a funfair, catering and fun games at various stalls around the park. The Owls’ mascots, Ozzie and Barney, will also make a special appearance! Supporters will have the opportunity to get the autographs of their heroes and pose for photos – together with buying Season Tickets and official Memberships, which will be on sale on the day. The Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme, the club’s charitable arm, will host various taster sessions and activities which will include a World Cup themed football tournament, inflatable pitches and a range of community stalls. Coaches from the programme will also deliver free of charge sessions in futsal, tennis, basketball and volleyball. As well as Support Dogs, local children’s hospice, Bluebell Wood - the Community Programme’s official charity partner - will be holding an official bucket collection in a bid to raise much-needed funds for the organisation. In addition, Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity and the Royal Society for the Blind will join the day with special activities and entertainment throughout what promises to be a fun-filled afternoon! Owls in the Park 2014 is free to attend and takes place on Sunday 13 July, starting at 11.00am and finishing at 5:30pm.

James Wallace is excited about the future and is looking forward to working with Blades boss Nigel Clough. The 22-year-old joins United from Tranmere Rovers for an undisclosed fee, after agreeing a three-year contract at Bramall Lane and the former Rover skipper insists it was a easy decision to move to South Yorkshire. He remarked: “Once I knew the interest from Shefﬁeld United was formal I was delighted and thankfully now we have got the deal signed off. “Bramall Lane is a special stadium, the atmosphere as a visiting player makes you rise your game, so it will be a privilege to pull on the red and white stripes. “I am excited about next season and I just can’t wait to get started in pre-season. “It was unfortunate how things ended at Tranmere, but this is too good a opportunity to turn down and everyone speaks so highly of the manager and his staff. “What they achieved in the second half of last season was remarkable and I know winning promotion will be the aim in the months ahead. I want to contribute to that success. The former Everton youngster will also be reunited with a former Toffees team-mate who he knows very well on a personal level. Wallace added: “Me and Jose (Baxter) go back along way, our parents are friends and we normally holiday together with our girlfriends. We have known each other since we were young children so it will be nice to see him regularly again, I think! “I speak daily with him and everything he has told me about the Club and the people here I liked, so that helped me make a quick decision.”

DEFENDER SIGNS FIRST PROFESSIONAL DEAL Reece Lucas last week signed his ﬁrst professional contract, describing it as a ‘dream come true’ for the youngster. The Doncaster-born defender has spent 10 years with the club, and put pen-to-paper on a professional deal that will see him further his development at Rotherham United. “It’s been a massive day, I’m really pleased it’s a dream come true,” Lucas told www. themillers.co.uk “I’ve just got to do my best, get my head down, work hard and try and get noticed for a place on the bench. I’ve loved my time at Rotherham so far, it’s been great and I’m just hoping to carry that on now in a positive way.” After ﬁrst representing the club at Under 8 level, Lucas has seen the club move from Millmoor to New York Stadium but has also had to adept to changes himself away from the senior setup, both at club level and in his own playing style. “I joined when I was eight year old so I’ve seen the club develop over the last 10 years and it’s in a fantastic place now so it’s a good time to be involved. I’ve worked under a lot of coaches in that time and you have to adapt to what each one wants which I’ve tried to do and I’ve just kept listening and I believe I’ve learned something from all of them. “When I started my scholarship I was playing at centre-back but I’ve converted to a rightback; it’s a change I’ve enjoyed and it was a different challenge for me but once which I like and that’s what I’d consider my position now.”

Harry Forrester could be the key to success for Doncaster Rovers next term, according to his manager. “Harry’s determined to get us back up,” said Paul Dickov. “Everyone – myself included – is looking forward to getting a ﬁt Harry Forrester back.” The former Brentford man – who was instrumental in helping the Bees to the brink of League 1 promotion in 2013 – struggled with a series of injuries last season and admitted that he “owed the Club.” Dickov said, “Harry will be a top player, he

was so frustrated last year with his injuries as it wasn’t something we could pinpoint.” “The first thing he said to us after the Leicester game was that he owes the Club next year. “He’s going to come back as fit as he can to make sure that we have a good chance of doing that (bouncing back) and he’s got the potential to be the best player in the division next year. “He’s of the focus and the mindset now that he can come back in pre-season the fittest he’s ever been and that’s a bonus for us all. And speaking of bonuses, Dickov was buoyed by the progress made by centre back Rob Jones who has been nursing a neck problem. “Rob’s been training away through the summer, there’s still only so much he can do. He’s got a meeting on the 23rd June with the specialist again where we’re all hopeful that he’ll get the green light and that will mean that he can get the go ahead to resume full training in pre-season,” he said. “If that’s not the case then we’ll have to look after him until he is ready.”
