The country has been football crazy since the start of the World Cup, with national flags in many cars, houses and of course pubs. After a spirited start against Italy, there were some positives to be drawn despite the narrow defeat. Optimism within the whole country remained high and the turnout at my local for the second match against Uraguay was massive, despite the match being shown on terrestrial television. A totally inept performance by the national team soon destroyed the high spirits of the customers and what should have been a celebration turned into doom and gloom with defeat ending the campaign at the first stage. I was up early on Saturday morning in an attempt to restore some pride to watch the third international rugby match against the All Blacks. We were slaughtered. Nobody can doubt my patriotism, however, as at the time of writing I am watching the second cricket test match between England and Sri Lanka, where England are fighting to regain dominance in the match. One good thing is that the three Yorkshire players in the side, Balance, Root and Plunkett have all acquitted themselves well. Top entertainment was maintained at the Victoria Dronfield with the appearance of Dave Mae, who is always excellent. Dave’s dad, Glen Dale, top lead singer with sixties band the Fortunes often makes a guest appearance but was absent due to having problems with his leg. He’s got his troubles, I’ve got mine. I am sure you will all enjoin with me in wishing Glen, possibly the nicest man in showbusiness, a speedy resolution to the problem. He will be a guest on my table at the forthcoming Mercury Awards night on October 2nd, which is always a very good night. I recently reported the Roy and Jackie Toaduff had received an invitation to the Queen’s garden party. Jackie is an amazing and enterprising man, and as the taxi arrived at the palace gates, asked if here was any help available as Roy was eighty nine and not good on his feet. A golf trolley was called for and Roy was able to save his legs. Jackie was disappointed that he had not had a good view, and latched on to the small procession to the royal tent.

He entered, unchallenged, and was freely mixing with the royal party until he was asked if he had an invitation, whereupon he replied that he had received it in the post. He was then asked if he had an invitation to be in the royal tent to which he truthfully replied in the negative. He was asked to leave. This week has seen the ofﬁcial opening of JD’S Music lounge, owned by Russ Dennett and three close friends. Not surprisingly, the ﬁrst band to appear was Junkyard Dog. Opening night was absolutely rammed, and although a bit too busy for comfort, a great night was enjoyed by all. I attended Russ’s music quiz and acoustic night on Sunday which was fairly well attended, by some very nice people.

TACKLING HEALTH INEQUALITIES SUMMER CYCLING WITH SKYRIDE LOCAL NOW OPEN Sheffield’s Health and Wellbeing Board is a group of senior councillors, GPs, managers and representatives of Sheffield people who work together to connect health, social care and wellbeing in Sheffield. It has several engagement events a year. This event’s main focus was on looking at what Sheffield’s Health and Wellbeing Board could do to tackle health inequalities, a topic that has been a priority for the Board since it was created. A wide variety of people attended – members of the public, service users, providers including NHS hospitals and voluntary, community and faith sector organisations, frontline workers, and statutory organisations – as well as Health and Wellbeing Board members. What’s next? The Health Inequalities Action Plan will be discussed at the Health and Wellbeing Board on 26 June 2014. The feedback from this event will be fed into the final version of the plan.

• See people as a whole, covering mental and physical health; don’t just offer medical solutions. • Work should be done to increase spend in preventative activity. • Develop the role of the GP (and other frontline workers), ensuring their awareness of key services that support those who are particularly affected by a health inequality. • People and communities have a range of resources and assets at their disposal – they should be used as partners. • We need to ensure we involve people, their families and providers in decisionmaking and use their feedback. • Access to services is a crucial issue – there are things we can do to improve this. • Organisations should work together to achieve better outcomes for people. Some professional cultures may need to be challenged. • Quality and dignity are really important things. • Pilot projects are good but we need to make sure that projects that work become widespread. • The Health and Wellbeing Board can add value – and attendees and organisations can add value as well.

CALL FOR STRONGER RULES ON TOP-UP FEES

Paul Burstow has tabled a Parliamentary Motion highlighting Independent Age’s research. This reveals that around three-quarters of councils are unable to show they are protecting families of the poorest pensioners from paying top-up fees for essential residential care that it is really local authorities’ responsibilities to meet. Early Day Motion 152* calls on the Government to strengthen the legal framework on charging in residential accommodation so that local authorities have to actively monitor which residents are able and willing to pay so-called topup fees. Top-up fees are meant to be paid by the relatives of council-funded residents who would like to pay more - perhaps because they would like their relative to have a bigger room, or a better view. But these payments should be voluntary and councils are required to check that families can afford to pay them. Topups should not be used to simply plug a shortfall in local authorities’ social care budgets, and they are not meant to be used to cover the costs of essential care.

Independent Age recently calculated that residential care is underfunded by around £700m a year, with local authorities buying care places at between £30 and £130 below the market rate. Many care homes are passing this shortfall onto individuals, either by asking families to ‘top-up’ the cost of their loved ones’ care home places which should be free, or by charging fee-paying residents more for the same level of care. Andrew Kaye, Head of Policy and Campaigns at Independent Age, said, “This important motion, sponsored by Paul Burstow, Grahame Morris and Tracey Crouch, follows on from our extensive research on the ‘Secret Subsidy’. Still too many families ﬁnd themselves confused they are being asked to pay an additional fee for basic care they assumed it was the responsibility of councils to meet. We’re calling on the Government to properly fund councils so they can pay a fair price for care and for councils to take whatever action they can to satisfy themselves that the people paying top-ups for care home places have voluntarily chosen to do so.”

SHEFFIELD BORN SNOOKER SEMI-PRO SETS HIS SIGHTS FOR THE BIG LEAGUES Local Snooker player Mitchell Travis has been causing a stir recently at a Fundraising Snooker Tournament, held in Gloucester, in aid of Breast Cancer Care UK. The Sheffield Semi-Pro had a fantastic week and was extremely proud to be part of “The Pink Ribbon” campaign to raise money and awareness. Mitchell has been working his way through the fiercely competitive Snooker scene, by competing and winning in the recent World Championships Qualifiers, but sadly lost to former world number 14, Martin Gould just before reaching The famous Crucible in Sheffield. Mitchell has a full year ahead and hopes to soon become a full-time Professional player, with help from his family and from his sponsors, Wosskow Brown Solicitors, this dream could become a reality very soon. The Pink Ribbon Charity Snooker event was a roaring success in Gloucester, held at The Capital Venue. It was Mitch’s second year attending the fundraising event, since it started in 2010. The happy chappy showed them how it’s done with 7 century breaks an amazing 138 to beat Jamie Burnett. The big breaks kept coming, 3 back to back centuries against Gary Steadman. Mitchell made it all the way to the Quarter Finals, and the Sheffield star’s conquests included Jamie Burnett, Barry Pinches, Rory McLeod and Mark King, who, in his day was ranked 11th in the World! We caught up with Mitchell recently to get the inside

This week Charlie Pearson, President of JCI Rotherham, presented us with a special delivery of over 23,000 used stamps for the stations fundraising appeal. Radio Nightingale broadcasts from the Rotherham Hospital and as a registered charity raises the money to continue the station through a variety of fundraising activities including collecting used stamps. The recently relaunched JCI Rotherham group were looking for community fundraising activities and after seeing an appeal on the stations Facebook page, Charlie took the idea to a JCI meeting and the members of not only the Rotherham branch but also the international fellowship of JCI got behind the appeal. Charlie said ‘we set ourselves a target of collecting 2,000 stamps in just over a month and everyone started bringing in so many we’d passed the target in no time!’. The Junior Chamber International (JCI) is a global network for young people in their 20’s and 30’s. The JCI network is active across more than 100 countries and has over 200,000 members around the world. The stamp collection is still on, so if you’d like to add to the mountain send them to us! We accept any stamp including gold parcel labels, UK or overseas, removed from it’s envelope by cutting around leaving 4-8mm of backing. SHEFFIELD THEATRES SEARCHES FOR LOCAL PANTO TALENT Sheffield Theatres, in partnership with Evolution Pantomimes, are searching for a Junior Ensemble for Dick Whittington, this year’s Lyceum Theatre family pantomime, which runs from Friday 5 December 2014 to Sunday 4 January 2015. Girls who wish to audition must be between the ages of 8 and 15 and boys who audition must be between the ages of 8 and 11 by Saturday 1 September 2014. As this is predominantly a dancing audition those wishing to participate must wear comfortable clothes, soft/dance shoes and bottled drinking water. Successful auditionees, ideally from Yorkshire, must be available throughout the entire rehearsal and production period from Saturday 15 November 2014 - Sunday 4 January 2015. So ‘Welcome Home Armageddon’ is the idea of patiently waiting for the end to arrive at your doorstep and give you a nice big hug.” Funeral For A Friend’s latest album, ‘Conduit’ was released in 2013, which is the ﬁrst record with former Rise To Remain drummer Pat Lundy who replaced long term drummer and vocalist Ryan Richards after the material was written. A musical piece of post hardcore pie, hits ‘Nails’ and ‘Death Comes To Us All’ are sure to soundtrack their performance at Shefﬁeld’s Corporation on Tramlines Weekend.

As part of Sheffield’s most anticipated summer music event, Tramlines, Welsh post hardcore clan Funeral For A Friend will be performing at Sheffield’s Corporation on 16th July. Expect huge from a band who have been named one of the driving forces behind their genre, with fan bases stretching further than the great wall of China. With support from Climate and Brawlers, get down early to avoid disappointment…we have a feeling this particular show is going to explode! Funeral For A Friend kick started their career way back in 2001, stemming from the seaside resort of Bridgend in Wales. The group released their debut album, ‘Casually Dressed Funeral For a Friend are performing at And Deep In Conversation’ in 2003 through Sheffield’s Corporation on 16th July. Having been named ‘A modern classic’ and ‘a fiery, dynamic piece of art,’ this album projected Funeral For a Friend into the hearts and souls of music lovers across the world. This album saw a shift in music style from the bands previously heavy screaming deployment to a more diverse, rounded edge. 2005 also saw the band clinch ‘Best British Newcomer’ at the Kerrang Awards, along with performing at thee mighty Download Festival alongside Guns ‘n’ Roses. ‘Tales Don’t Tell themselves’ in 2007 and ‘Memory And Humanity’ in 2008 followed, both reaching commercial success for the Welsh brigade. ‘Welcome Home Armageddon’ in March 2011 was the next release for Funeral For A Friend, which again saw a slight shift in musical style, a clear distinction between its former releases. We are now well and truly in the thick of festival season, not only our favourite time of the year, but also the perfect excuse to discover fresh, up-coming, innovative new music. With every event you attend, this allows a platform for undiscovered talent to be thrust right into your heart and soul. This year’s Ghostfest, held at Leeds University is all about one thing…kicking the hell out of your ear drums! Ghostfest, one of the ‘heavier’ events on the festival calendar is an annual hardcore event which draws in crowds from across the country. This year will see a host of Sheffield bands take to its stage, alongside a collection of national aswell as internationally renowned groups for each and everybody to enjoy. Although Sunday is the day of the Sheffield takeover (we like to think so anyway!) Saturday 28th June will be headlined by no other than deathcore legends Suicide Silence. Since the passing of their former vocalist Mitch Lucker in 2012, the band have pushed on to regain their iconic status within their tricky genre to break through. With hits ‘You Only Live Once,’ ‘No Pity For a Coward’ and ‘Wake Up’ no doubt all part of their massive set, expect chaos from a band who have passion and emotion in abundance. Joining Suicide Silence will be Bleed From Within. Scottish metalcore rockers, this group have performed some of the world’s finest rock stages to include Download Festival and Metal Hammer’s Defenders of the Faith IV tour. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity Weekly Feature

DARING DUO JUMP SKY HIGH IN MEMORY OF MUM AND NAN A courageous mother and daughter from Aston reached for the skies last December to support their local cancer hospital. On Sunday 29th December, Trisha Shaw (43) and Charlotte Spooner (21) did a sponsored skydive at Langar Airﬁeld and raised over £3,000 for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. The duo decided to do ‘The Big Jump’ after Charlotte sadly lost both her nans to cancer within a year of each other, both of whom were treated at Weston Park Hospital. Last year, Trish’s mum and Charlotte’s nan, Florence, was given the devastating news that she had lung cancer. She underwent a course of chemotherapy treatment at the hospital, but sadly lost her battle in October 2012, aged 72. Trisha said: “My mum always said that once she had recovered she would donate a vast amount of money to the Cancer Charity at Weston Park Hospital. “Sadly, she can no longer be with us, but it was a no-brainer for me and Charlotte to start fundraising for the hospital whose staff went above and beyond to give my mum the best loving care possible in her ﬁnal months.” The family are inspirational fundraisers, having previously organised a pyjama night out, a

bag-packing afternoon, as well as an evening of entertainment. In total they have raised an impressive £6678.00 for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. Charlotte said: “When we decided to take the big plunge, our main aim was to raise as much money as possible so that the invaluable work at the hospital can continue.” “Throughout both my nans’ treatments, the hospital did whatever they could to support me and my family through such a distressing time, and we can’t wait to say thank you in our own special way.” Charity Fundraiser, Sarah Cross said: “Trisha and Charlotte showed great courage by embarking on ‘The Big Jump’ in memory of their loved ones and raised such a fantastic amount!” “As a charity we are continually amazed at the extremes supporters go to in order

to raise money for a cause which is so close to their hearts. “Skydiving is a great way to raise sponsorship whilst taking on a personal challenge and we are encouraging anyone interested in taking to the skies to contact us for more information.” This year, in celebration of their 20th anniversary the cancer charity are encouraging social clubs and community groups to hold a special fundraising night as part of a new initiative called ‘For One Night Only.”

The glorious 16th has been and gone, and although I didn’t get to fish the river on opening day, I did go the day after... I love the River Derwent, and since joining The Earl of Harrington’s AC in Derby, I’ve got access to nine miles of fish filled fun with some very big fish to target, so it was off to a new stretch to try my luck. The area I’d chosen to fish had thrown up a carp of 25lb 2oz a day previously, is renowned for big bream, tench, pike and perch, and has plenty of back up fish such as roach, minnow, dace and chub, so the fishing has the potential to be fast and furious, and best of all, you can never be sure what will happen next! I try to fish two rods if I can, especially if I’m not familiar with a new swim, so my first rod was tackled up to take into account any big fish and was rigged with a couple of ounces of lead to hold bottom in the deep, powerful flow, a short, strong hook link and a big lump of meat soaked in Marukyu Krill liquid; this was launched out into the edge of the main flow around forty yards away. The second set up comprised a small maggot feeder and finer hook link to try and tempt a chub or river roach, which could be

The Blair Project was set up by Nile Henry, who was sick of seeing his own brother, Blair, struggle for funding to continue his karting career. It aims to help young drivers who don’t have the funding to move up the Motorsports ladder and create a more level playing field. It’s an all too familiar problem in motor racing where many talented young drivers are forced to abandon their racing careers due to lack of funds. It currently costs £20k -£30K per season for a 10 year old to race in major championships, which is beyond the means of ordinary families. Nile Henry, CEO of TBP said: “ We have been really impressed by the grit and determination shown by these young drivers to keep their racing dreams alive, some of whom are as young as 10. Their stories are truly heart warming; it’s a great shame that we can’t help all of them”. “Like the X Factor, it will be up to the public to decide who our three lucky winners are going to be. So I hope their local community will get behind each of them. This opportunity will change their lives”. My swim was nicely tucked away amongst the bankside vegetation and it was lovely to be able to sit on my upturned bucket and watch the world drift downstream. I saw grey heron, cormorant, kingfisher and buzzard, dragonflies, swans and even a tiny fieldmouse which decided to stick around and sample some crumbs of groundbait! If you haven’t fished a river, then I truly believe you are missing out...in my opinion, it’s far more interesting than most still waters! Within a few minutes, I’d started to get a few indications on the maggot rod; a quick snatch around of the ‘tip and I struck into thin air as I missed the bite. It happened again, and then a third time until I recognised the culprit; minnows! Minnows will attack maggots willingly, so I changed to a small open ended feeder packed with Marukyu EFG 142 and a worm hook bait. The EFG 142 has larger particles in it which means it gets to the river bed quickly and the groundbait stays very close to the feeder which in turn means bait isn’t really spread through the swim and instead concentrates fish in a smaller area. The addition of a few Skrill pellets also gave extra scent in the swim... During the session, I started to get a good run of perch, chub and silvery roach; nothing of Hamilton, Jensen Button, Max Chilton, Paul Di Resta and David Coulthard all started out in karting along with the likes of Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and the great Ayrton Senna. The lucky winners will be developed by GW Motorsports’ team boss Gary Ward, who drove and won races in his Jordan Formula 1, and is a former instructor at the Silverstone Race School. Said Gary: “ I’m looking for drivers who come from a hungrier and edgier background, who haven’t yet made their names in the sport, but are fuelled by an all-consuming passion, racing talent, and the right attitude. I will work on moulding them into champions and developing them to become great ambassadors of the sport”. After a good three hours of concentration, the swim went completely quiet; I have no idea whether a pike had noticed the commotion, or whether the fish had just stopped feeding as the air temperature dropped, but I was becoming increasingly incensed by the tenacity of the resident gnats, so I decided to pack up and return to the van. Overall, I had about 15lbs of fish, all in pristine condition and which were an absolute joy to catch. Glorious 16th? It certainly was for me! OWLS SIGN NORTHERN IRISH YOUNGSTER Northern Ireland youngster Paul McElroy has agreed a one-year deal with Sheffield Wednesday. The left winger, who can also play at left back, will sign for the Owls on 1 July. McElroy graduated through the academy at Premiership side Hull City to pen a professional deal in the summer of 2013. He links up with Wednesday 12 months later with ambitions to break into the first team setup under Stuart Gray. He told swfc.co.uk: “I played in a couple of trial games if you like earlier this year and thankfully did well. “I was really impressed with the place and I already think I have a good feel for Sheffield Wednesday. “I’m a left winger primarily – that is my favourite position – but I have also played at left back. “I want to get a good pre-season under the belt now and my aim is to play in the first team for Wednesday.” McElroy has also progressed on the international stage having represented Northern Ireland from Under-15 level through to the Under-21s.
