The older I get, the more convinced I become that we live in a mad world. I am very proud of being a Sheffielder, what with having the oldest football team in the world, being synonymous with the finest cutlery and of course the once great steel industry. I shall refrain from mentioning our two football teams, Wednesday and United. You can perhaps understand my concern when a television programme documentary regarding the problems facing the police was all about the warring factions in Fir Vale, a deprived part of the city. Apparently the recent Roma immigrants are fighting the Pakistani residents who object to them invading their territory, their territory would you believe. I don’t have a racist bone in my body but I have major concerns about the gradual taking over of our country by the Muslims, without fighting for it, in fact ably assisted and encouraged by this and the previous governments. I find it totally abhorrent that major supermarkets and large butchery chains have taken pork off the shelves for fear of offending them. This is indicative of the number of Muslims in the country, further endorsed by the support they receive from David Cameron, who must be hoping and praying that they all turn out on voting day. Winston Churchill must be turning in his grave. The next example of lunacy is Luis Suarez up to his old biting tricks again. The football authorities took an extremely lenient view of the affair. Had the penalty been disqualification for life he would surely have kept his mouth shut. He is one of the more gifted players in the world and it is significant that his team, Uruguay, playing without him, lost against Columbia and were knocked out. I find it amazing that on his flight home away from the other players; he was met at the airport by hundreds of fans, who obviously think that notwithstanding his disgraceful behaviour, he is greeted like a national hero. Despite my warnings regarding live music, support it or lose it, I have noticed a drop in attendances at various gigs recently, whether or not this was due to pay day at the end of the month I don’t know, but one act that does not seem to be affected by

this, due no doubt to their large following and massive talent is John Reilly and Lewis Nitikman. They have three prestigious gigs coming up, firstly at the Rutland Arms, Bakewell on Sunday 6th July, then Saturday 26th July at the Lampoon Theatre, Barnsley, and Whitley Hall on the 6th August . These will be guaranteed to please and I strongly recommend a visit to one or all three of these events. John Reilly, for me the finest vocalist for miles around is also the voice of Boy on a Dolphin and Acoustic Angels and Lewis is a magnificent pianist. My retirement date gets ever closer, apart from perhaps the odd contribution and anyone wanting a bit of free publicity for any worthwhile charity event had better be quick. FLEXIBLE WORKING RIGHTS EXTENDED TO TWENTY MILLION From last Monday (30 June 2014) every employee will gain the right to request flexible working, giving a boost to workers and to business. Up until now, the right has only been available for carers, or people who look after children. This has now been extended to all employees. Today’s extension of the right to request the chance to work flexibly means more than 20 million employees can now benefit. Flexible working helps people balance their work with responsibilities, keeping more people in long term employment and enabling companies to keep hold of top talent. It is expected the new right will be of particular interest to older workers who want to work differently as they approach retirement and to young people entering the labour market who may want take up additional training or learning while they work. As part of the right, employees can expect their request to be considered in a reasonable manner by employers – this will be much simpler than the previous burdensome process businesses had to undergo before making a decision. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said: Modern businesses know that flexible working boosts productivity and staff morale, and helps them keep their top talent so that they can grow. It’s about time we brought working practices bang up to date with the needs, and choices, of our modern families. Today is a crucial milestone in how we can help people balance their family life with work and caring responsibilities. And from next year, Shared Parental Leave will allow mums and dads to be able to choose how they care for their new-born

Business Minister Jo Swinson said: Extending the right to request flexible working will help to create a cultural shift towards more modern, 21st century workplaces where working flexibly is the norm. Firms that embrace flexible working are more likely to attract and retain the best talent and reap the benefits of a more motivated workforce. Employees will benefit from being able to balance work with other commitments in their lives. Businesses have reported benefits to their firms in allowing staff to adopt more flexible working practices. This includes more than half reporting an improvement in their relationship with their employees and staff motivation, 40% reporting a boost in productivity and 38% seeing a drop in staff absence. Acas has published a short code of practice to help employers understand the extension to the right and how to process requests. Acas Chair Brendan Barber said: Our experience from working with thousands of employers is that flexible working is both good for business and employees. The new Code will help employers handle flexible working requests in a reasonable manner and fit their specific circumstances and procedures. We have also produced a good practice guide with practical examples to help employers and businesses consider some of the key issues that may pop up. Surrey based firm Healix is one firm that allowed its staff to request flexible working, and now more than a third of its workforce is able to work from home. The firm, which is Europe’s largest provider of medical evacuation services to the

travel industry, has reported lower staff turnover and levels of stress, as staff can work flexibly to allow them to balance things like childcare, further education and volunteering. Paul Beven, co-founder of Healix Group said: Flexible working is great for both our business and our employees. We have a motivated and dedicated workforce and our people benefit from having the flexibility to balance work with other commitments in their lives. Susannah Clements, Deputy Chief Executive at CIPD, said: The extension of the right to request flexible working to all employees is recognition of its growing importance to both employers and individuals. Employers increasingly recognise the strong business case for flexible working, including enhanced employee engagement and the attraction and retention of a more diverse workforce. Flexible working can also help meet the demand from an increasingly multigenerational workforce. Many younger workers are seeking greater work-life balance, while those looking after ageing parents or relatives are also requiring more flexibility to manage their caring responsibilities. At the same time, older workers are demanding more flexible routes into retirement, looking to work fewer hours rather than seeing retirement as a “full stop” to their working lives. The new accompanying code of practice, which encourages employers to deal with flexible working requests in a ‘reasonable manner’, will help assuage the concerns some employers have about managing flexible workers.

A day of fun activities on a cycling theme called ‘Blood, Sweat and Gears’ will take place on The Moor on Saturday (5 July) between 11.30am and 5.30pm. For those wanting to fully absorb themselves in the event, The Steel Stage also have several route-side campsites available from Friday 4 to Monday 7 July. These family-friendly campsites offer on-route locations, just a short walk from High Bradfield with their own onsite bar, catering facilities and toilets with pitch options available for motorhomes and caravans. The second hub is located in the centre of Oughtibridge village, just before the ascent of Cote d’Oughtibridge (Jawbone Hill) one of the key climbs in Stage 2, and with some of the best racing views will be found at Coronation Park. This community-friendly site ticks a lot of boxes for racing fans with a large screen, disabled viewing, concessions, toilets and children’s play area to keep the little ones entertained. Arts activities and performances will be led by Greentop Circus, Oughtibridge Brass Band and Art in the Park to name a few. In addition to the hub there are also several convenient campsites, all located directly along the route in close proximity to the Jawbone. With fantastic rural scenery as well as views of the race, Oughtibridge is likely to be popular destination for both visitors and tour enthusiasts. The next hub at Abbeyfield Park presents the last chance to see the race on a big screen before the peloton hits Cote de Wincobank on Jenkin Road. Abbeyfield Park will be a wonderful community hub with its own refreshments, toilets and a big screen to watch all the race action as it approaches. Greentop Circus will be on hand to perform unicycle demonstrations and training, Art in the Park will run crazy bunting workshops for hands-on fun and Little Red Light productions will host a family picnic and fancy dress bicycle parade, so there’ll be plenty to keep everyone entertained. Wincobank Common will be transformed into a family friendly spectator site.at the brow of Cote de Wincobank on Jenkin Road - the steepest climb of the whole Tour de France with a 33 per cent

gradient! Like all the spectator hubs the site will have its own offering of refreshments, toilets, big screen coverage of the race and creative activities. The Friends of Wincobank Hill will be leading the site celebrations, while Heeley City Farm will be building an Iron Age roundhouse complete with spoke wheel roof and panels decorated by local schools, Unbeatable Energy will be hosting drumming workshops and local artist Paul Evans will be creating a huge eco land art piece to be visible from the air. Meadowhall is situated right in the heart of the Stage 2 route action, with the Jenkin Road hill climb just around the corner and the race then coming directly around the shopping centre itself before the final sprint outside Motorpoint Arena. Meadowhall is hosting a free Fan Fest, not only giving spectators the chance to see the full race on big viewing screens, but also to stand just feet away from the cyclists as they ride past and gear up for the sprint finish. Set to be a huge celebration for all the family, the Fan Fest will take place in Meadowhall’s Orange Zone car parks. Spectators will be able to watch the race and the two hour long publicity caravan that precedes it and also get the opportunity to experience a whole host of fun cycling and non-cycling related activities and entertainment throughout the day. There is also the opportunity to take advantage of the 280 stores and over 50 places to eat and drink inside the centre. Onsite activities include climbing walls, extreme mountain bike shows, mobile caving experiences, mini tennis and basketball sessions, while JE James Cycling will also be hosting specialist coaching sessions. Capital FM will be broadcasting their coverage live from the site and presenting a live music stage. Don Valley Bowl (DVB) is the final official spectator hub on Stage 2 and will sit close to the finish line. It will host a 100 square metre large screen, cycle expo featuring local businesses, pop up retail and restaurant showcase, entertainment, corporate hospitality and much more. SHEFFIELD SCOOPS BIGGESTEVER ARTS FUNDING Sheffield is celebrating a massive boost for the arts in the city. Arts Council England today (1 July) announced £9.6 million over three years investment shared across nine city arts organisations. This is £2 million more than the previous Arts Council funding round and highlights the reputation held by each of the local organisations and the high level relationship enjoyed between the City Council and the Arts Council. The successful organisations that will receive this Arts Council funding are Sheffield Theatres, Museums Sheffield, Site Gallery, Forced Entertainment, Eclipse Theatre, Greentop Community Circus

Theatre, Music in the Round, Yorkshire Artspace and Third Angel. The Council backed the bids of Museums Sheffield, Sheffield Theatres and Site Gallery with an offer of sustained, three-year funding – despite general Council budget cuts – and in the case of Site, with an offer of a match capital contribution to their redevelopment scheme. The Site Gallery will receive £1 million as their share of the funding from ACE. The Council backing for the arts is based on attracting the major financial leverage of Arts Council funding and the consequent benefit for the city’s arts offer, protecting and creating jobs, and attracting visitors and business to the city. Cllr Isobel Bowler, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure said: “I'm delighted that a number of the city's arts organisations have received major grant awards from Arts Council England (ACE).

“Total ACE funding in the city amounts to £9.6 million, which includes an additional £2 million over and above the previous funding level. This is not only great news for the arts in Sheffield, but also a further boost for the economy and our reputation as a vibrant city. “The Council has a strong working relationship with ACE and I'm grateful for their increased financial support in Sheffield. For our part, the Council backed the funding applications of Sheffield Theatres, Museums Sheffield and Site Gallery with an offer of sustained annual funding and additional match funding for the Site Gallery redevelopment. “I'm particularly pleased to see Museums Sheffield receive their first ever major regular funding from the Arts Council. Museums Sheffield will receive an additional £600,000 a year as their share of the funding from ACE.”

CELEBRATION TIME AT THE DUSTY MILLER

When Peter Fazakerley raised his hand to make the winning bid on Tuesday 22nd June, 1976, the Dusty Miller became the home for the family for the next 38 years, and the rest, as they say, is history! Now a celebratory party, beer festival & charity night will take place on Friday July 11th 2014 and will re-launch the refurbished Dusty! Adrian said: “Just like last year – it will be a great party with a fabulous free buffet, and not one – but three – live bands performing throughout the evening! Kicking off will be indie band Tram 13, hopefully outside (subject to weather!) followed indoors by Creakin’ Limb – a top rock covers band, with Dusty favourite Non Compos Mentis rocking out the live party. However that’s not all – there will also be a DJ playing throughout the night, and will follow the live music to see out the party night! There will be a Beer Festival running all weekend, and on Saturday night the fun continues as top soul & Motown trio Harlem

Knights play for the customers. Families can join in, as the Dusty provides a superb play area which was opened only last year. Following on from the refurbishment, there is now a new bistro menu masterminded by Adrian & his two chefs. The emphasis has been put on using locally sourced meats and award winning steaks and sausages bought from local Derbyshire farms, & a range of fresh fish dishes also play an important part on the new menus. In addition, of course, the Specials Board will be updated on a regular basis with the emphasis firmly placed on the freshest seasonal foods. These new menus of course will complement The Dusty’s renowned Carvery which will continue to be served all day every day. Over the years many new features have been added – not least of which are the en suite guest rooms (which are 3 AAA & 3 Star officially rated!) and a new large playing field with play area. A new accolade recently awarded is Trip Advisor 2014 Winner Certificate of Excellence - based

on ratings made by guests on Trip Advisor. Live music has been part of the offering here for well over a decade, with the Dusty ﬁrmly established as a top venue for the best local – and indeed national – bands and tribute acts to be seen every Saturday, with occasional special Friday night events. Festival season is finally upon us; not only our ultimate favourite time of the year, but also the perfect opportunity to revamp your music collection with the discovery of brand spanking new bands. Held at Knebworth house from 4th – 6th July, Sonisphere is one of the words biggest touring rock festivals, hitting the UK shores with a mighty fine blast! It’s a commonly known fact that Sheffield is firmly on the map for its stratospheric music scene. Whether it be electro, dance, indie, rock or hardcore, the steel city prides itself on supplying the world with some of the most pioneering bands within the industry. This is reflected in the line-up of Sonisphere 2014, as Sheffield five piece Black Dogs are to take to the Jagermeister stage on Friday 4th July. Ballzy, brash and masters of creating brutal hardcore hits, the group have recently released their brand new video for track ’13 b*stards’ alongside performing at the sold-out Ghostfest in Leeds last weekend. Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

If I’m honest, I don’t think I’ve ever had to work so hard for two measly silver bream in my whole angling life! I fished an absolutely beautiful little water near Derby this week, one which is known to contain tench of over 10lbs, and they were my intended quarry, however it wasn’t to be...no matter what I tried! I got there nice and early. Mist rising off the water, pin bubbles fizzing, dew on the grass and the sun yet to peep over the horizon, it looked perfect and I couldn’t get set up fast enough in the hope of a big fat tinca before sunrise. On one rod, the generally accepted tench rig of Drennan maggot feeder and short hook link to a size 16 hook loaded with four red maggots; on the second, a groundbait feeder, again with a short hooklink fished helicopter style and baited with a solitary piece of Marukyu Credence Corn. The main plan of attack was to pile maggots into a clear spot and drop the feeder over the top, keeping the swim topped up by recasting regularly. The second rod was more of a ‘rover’, the feeder filled with hemp, my favoured groundbait, and some of the new black Skrill (squid and krill) pellets, also from the Marukyu stable and which would be cast to likely looking areas... As soon as the baits hit the water and settled on the lake bed, I started getting tiny twitches of the rod tips, and an odd bleep from my alarms, but nothing developed into anything substantial. I missed an aborted take, flinched over the rods as the bobbins went up, then fell back almost instantly, and I continued to wait expectantly for the action to begin.....for four hours! Despite carp being visible on the surface and plenty of bubbles indicating fish were on the feed, I was struggling. I tried different sized hooks, varied the length of hook link, changed baits, moved swims, used

a sensitive quivertip, got the float rod out, fed little, fed lots and even tried chucking fluff with a fly rod to pick off one of the small carp racing around in the sunshine...all to no avail! Other anglers arriving after me had already packed up and gone home, all five of them completely biteless, but with more sense than I who chose to stick it out whilst determined to catch a fish. I was approached by an elderly bystander (the grumpy ‘in my day’ type) who told me quite confidently that there were “...no fish in here mate” despite the dozens of blatantly obvious fish cruising the upper layers, but by this time, I was beginning to wonder if I was seeing things! After he had soaked me in spittle, and berated me with unrequited expletives, the gent got back on his equally rickety pushbike and cycled off; I was still without fish, but I fear he was without marbles! Eventually, a more positive indication invited me to lift the rod, and a slight resistance developed into a small bream which skimmed into the net; a blanksaver indeed... Ten minutes later and another fish, similar in size and identical in species was also unhooked...and that was it! In seven hours, I’d had barely three indications and only managed to scrape two skimmers on a day which started off with such anticipation. Even now, writing this, I still can’t put my finger on the reasons for my abject failure; was it a precursor to spawning? A hatch of naturals which preoccupied the fish? Bloodworm? Air pressure? Weather conditions? My approach (probably!) or something else? Was the elderly chap right?! I couldn’t tell you; in the end, I think I won because I caught, but if I get many more days like this headbanger, I think I’ll give up! Now, where are my golf clubs?

THE MILLERS SIGN OWLS REPORT FOR PRE-SEASON PAUL GREEN... TRAINING The Owls reported back for pre-season training on Tuesday morning in blistering conditions at Middlewood Road. The sun was blazing in S6 as Stuart Gray gathered the players – from academy level through to the seniors – and laid down his expectations for the gruelling six-week period ahead. The hard work then began as the players were put through their paces by ﬁtness coach Andy Kalinins and his staff. Wednesday kick off their summer game schedule with a trip to League Two side York on Saturday week, with friendlies to follow against Bury, FK Čukarički, Doncaster, Newcastle and Barnsley.

Rotherham United have completed signing number 11 for the close season after securing a deal for midfielder Paul Green, subject to medical. The Republic of Ireland International was shown through the corridors of New York Stadium this afternoon before agreeing a twoyear deal with the Millers. With the majority of Steve Evans’ squad reporting back for pre-season training this morning, Green is expected to join up with his new teammates at training headquarters at Roundwood next week, after a spell away with the full Republic of Ireland squad. “We are delighted to have signed Paul after several chats with his representatives,” boss Steve Evans told www.themillers.co.uk “The lad had a magnificent finish to the season with Ipswich Town so it wasn’t a surprise to find there was significant interest in him, so we are very pleased to add him to our squad. “I think the lure of Championship football, knowing what we are about as a football club and our magnificent stadium all helped to convince him that this was the club for him. “Paul is a full international, he has just returned from an end of season trip with Martin O’Neill’s Republic of Ireland, so he will be given a few more days to recuperate. Sheffield United this week welcomed the appointment of the Club’s co-owner Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to one of the highest profile roles in his home country of Saudi Arabia. Whilst remaining co-owner of the Blades with Kevin McCabe, the Prince’s future commitments in his own country, where he becomes President of the General Presidency for Youth Welfare (the equivalent of the Minister of Sport in the UK), means he will step down as co-chairman. The effect on the Club’s Board proceedings will be seamless as the Prince’s Principal Advisor, Jim Phipps, has been requested to manage HRH’s interests at Sheffield United. “It is an honour to be chosen by the King to fulfill this role,” said Prince Abdullah. “It does mean it will have an impact on the time I can give to being co-chairman although my commitment to the Blades remains unchanged. I am 1,000 per cent committed to the Club, its vision and determined to see it achieve its goals. “Serving on the board has been a highlight of my career. I am sad to step away for a time from active participation in club affairs, but my son, Prince Abdulrahman, will carry the torch for me on the board and my advisor and friend, Jim Phipps, will serve as Co-Chairman with my partner, Kevin McCabe.” Prince Abdullah added: “Once a Blade always a Blade. Nothing else changes. Last year, we set serious goals for where we, as Blades, intend to take this club.
