As a lifelong supporter of live music. I am always happy to support venues that support this and I am very fortunate to have four such places of entertainment within walking distance of my home and one only a fiver in a taxi away. Andy Jarvis and his lovely wife Kath run a really good pub, the Yew Tree at Coal Aston, and he, very bravely in my opinion had bands on both Friday and Saturday. On Friday night, he had top band Crooked Cats performing, who play some great music from the sixties. Saturday night, being the first Saturday in the month saw the appearance of local band Junkyard Dog, whose massive following, me included, always guarantee a full house. This great entertainment pub continues to provide with karaoke every Sunday night presented by well-known pub and club singer, Russ Elliott who always does a great job. The Green Dragon, on High Street Dronfield also features live music, and great female vocalist, Emma Rossi appears every month. Regrettably, this is on the first Saturday and clashes with Junkyard Dog at the Yew Tree, precluding me from seeing both. It would be great if she appeared regularly on the second, third or fourth Saturday when attendances would possibly be greater. JD’S Music lounge, also on High Street had a brilliant duo on Wednesday night, the Expressions appeared to a fair sized crowd. The duo comprises of Joel White, son of local legendary guitarist Frank and Londoner, Paul Moroney on guitar. They were excellent and I am looking forward to their return. It was nice to see Cary Bayliss, lead guitarist with Acoustic Angels and often backing Lyndsay Dracuss, in the audience. Thursday night at the Victoria, always a top night as I book the acts, was brilliant this week with the appearance of Swansong, featuring Karen Gilmore and her husband on acoustic guitar. They blew me away with a faultless performance. It was sad that the audience was not as busy as should warrant one of the better acts on the circuit. Next week will be a change on Thursday at the

Victoria with the appearance of Them Two, an act I have not personally booked, and have not seen. I am really looking forward to this. I have taken charge of the remote control at home while the football World Cup and Wimbledon have been on. The men’s final at Wimbledon was very exciting with Djokovic beating crowd favourite Federer in a five set thriller, the women’s singles final being won Czech girl Petra Kvitova easily beating Eugenie Bouchard in straight sets. It was nice to meet Sue Housley and her dad Doug Lincoln at celebrity breakfast. Sue, professionally known as Susan St Nicholas, performs a Doris Day Tribute and is apparently an avid reader of this column.

Paolo Nutini is set to make his headline debut at the Motorpoint Arena on Saturday 25th October, having previously supported The Rolling Stones in Sheffield back in August 2006. The Doncaster Tourism and St George’s Rotary Club Dragon Boat Challenge returns for its ﬁfth year on 12th July, bigger and better than ever! Following on from the success of the last four years, the 2014 Dragon Boat race has grown to have the largest number of competitors yet. A total number of 36 teams from all around Doncaster will line up against each other for the race. The event is free to attend, and the watching crowd can enjoy a range of attractions and entertainment such as a fun fair, charity stalls and a range of food and drink. The crews, of all ages and abilities, will take to the water aboard 30 foot, beautifully decorated Chinese Dragon boats. They will be battling it out to become the new ‘Dragon Boat Champions of Doncaster’, with each vying to take the title from last year’s winners ‘DCLT’s Dragon Warriors’.

Mercury readers are invited to attend the ﬁnal of a snooker tournament at a Shefﬁeld sports club, and learn more about the facilities and activities on offer.

AGE-FRIENDLY HOUSING PROJECT CWCA LAUNCH NOW OPEN SEEKS LOCAL RESIDENT HELP MOBILE PHONE 1-7 Charles Street SERVICE Sheffield S1 2HS A team of researchers at the University of Sheffield is inviting Sheffield residents to become involved in a new research project that aims to develop innovative solutions to the design and management of housing and neighbourhoods that promote wellbeing as people grow older. A central feature of this work is collaboration with residents aged 50 and over in the design process. The number of people growing older and living independently in local communities is expected to rise in the coming decades. It is vital that places where people live are designed to promote and support activity while enabling independence and a better quality of life, both for current and for future generations. Sheffield residents can play a role in shaping their future. The project is led by architect Professor Sarah Wigglesworth. She says: “This is an important and timely project. The built environment has a huge influence on people’s well-being, affecting their ability to be active members of the community and live a full life. We are seeking solutions that can allow people to stay in their homes and neighbourhoods for longer, carry out their normal activities with ease, stay active and have a social life. The involvement of local people in

our study is essential for understanding the issues from their perspective. On the basis that what is good for older people is good for us all, such improvements should have a profound effect on how we live in our homes and our cities. “ The project is funded by three research councils and will take place over the next two and a half years. The team are also collaborating with Sheffield City Council to identify opportunities for improving well-being in later life through both immediate and long term actions. City Wide Care Alarms (CWCA) is now providing its service for people who have mobile phones but no landline. Previously the service was only available for people with a landline phone, but as more people are choosing to use mobile phones as their main contact, City Wide Care Alarms (CWCA) have decided to meet this need by launching this new service from 1 July. As the service relies on the mobile phone signal reaching the call monitoring centre when the alarm button is pushed, there is a slightly higher risk than using a landline. However this should be balanced against the risks of not having the emergency care service at all. The cost of the service will be £5.50 per week (ex VAT) and people will be required to supply their own SIM card. The service provided will be the same as for people using landlines and includes; free installation, call monitoring, response by CWCA staff if required, maintenance and repair. In addition, all the additional automated alarms, such as bed sensors, medication dispensers etc, are available to users if needed. HELP CHILDREN PLAY FREELY

Sheffield was once the envy of other cities for its commitment to ensuring children and young people were supported to play freely. However, over the last few years there has been a decrease in play spaces and opportunities for its children and young people. To bridge the gaps groups have come together, some supported by Sheffield Green Spaces Forum. The physical and social environments in which children and young people develop have changed too. It is increasingly rare for children and young people to have long, uninterrupted blocks of time to play indoors and outdoors, by themselves or with their friends. Our children and young people as urban city dwellers are now less likely to have access to outdoor play spaces in natural environments. Technology, traffic, and urban land-use patterns have changed the natural play territory of childhood. Those who are older will remember the challenges and freedoms that play brought to us and how through play we were helped to take risks and to problem solve – making our own play resources and using our imaginations to transform junk or natural resources into castles and old wheels into swings etc. Parents/carers too are increasingly concerned about the security of their children and young people, and are making greater use of carefully constructed adult-directed outdoor playgrounds that limit challenge in the name of safety. At the same time, growing numbers of children are spending substantial time

Having won the award for Outstanding Contribution to Real Ale from Sheffield CAMRA earlier this year, Tramlines prides itself on offering festivalgoers something a little more tasty to sup on during the three day event, which lands from Friday 25 – Sunday 27 July. With tasty being the operative word, it seemed only fitting that Smoke Barbecue, located in Sheffield’s infamous ‘cheesegrater’ building and renowned for its finger licking meat plates, would become the start of Tramlines’ infamous Ale Trail. The Ale Trail links a series of real ale pubs across the City Centre, Kelham Island, Crookes and Broomhill where the new Tramlines Ale will be on sale during the festival weekend. These include The Shakespeare, The Riverside, the Blues and Ale Stage, and The Harlequin. Explore this route on the Smoke Barbecue Ale Trail Bus which starts on Arundel Gate at the bus stop by Sainsbury’s where, along the 40-minute hop-on-hop-off route, you’ll be serenaded by some of the event's hottest bands. Fast becoming the highlight of many people's Tramlines weekend, the Buskers Buses allow revellers to travel for free around the ever expanding festival site in style – with acoustic sessions performed on the top deck whilst you travel. In addition to the Smoke BBQ Ale Trail Bus, people can board a second route, which also runs on Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon until 8pm. The Barnsley College Buskers Bus can be picked up from the University at the Western Bank bus stop and

this route connects the peripheral venues within the city centre such as Hope Works, CADS and Yellow Arch Studios, taking 30 minutes for the round trip. Look out for the special Buskers Bus stops across the city centre over the festival weekend. This year’s Tramlines is set to be the biggest yet as it returns for its sixth instalment with a monster lineup featuring Public Enemy, Sister Sledge, Katy B, The Cribs, Annie Mac, and Simian Mobile Disco. Tramlines advance weekend tickets are on sale from www. gigantic.com at £28 (plus 10% booking fee). Weekend tickets

are available in advance only and come with a free festival programme (usually £3). Tickets will be available for sale on the door for a higher price of £16 per day, or £48 for all three days. GUIDE DOGS APPEAL FOR PUPPY WALKING VOLUNTEERS The local branch of the Guide Dogs charity is calling on people across South Yorkshire to help them prepare puppies for lives as guide dogs, by volunteering as puppy walkers. Puppy Walkers help to introduce pups to everything that life as a working dog could throw at them, from navigating busy city streets to using public transport. After spending around a year with volunteers, the pups are then ready to be trained by Guide Dogs’ own specialists.

The radio station Magic AM is offering a unique prize for the social, recreation or working men‘s club in South Yorkshire that raises the most money this summer for its charity Magic AM’s Cash for Kids. Glenn Pinder, Magic AM’s Breakfast Presenter will be hosting a Magic Night at the winning club. With a tribute band, fantastic entertainment, rafﬂes and brilliant prizes, this night will prove to be the talk of the town. I was very sad to read in last weeks Mercury of the funeral of long time secretary of Smithywood WMC, Brian Davey. Although like a host of other clubs Smithywood is a bit quieter these days in it's heydays in the mid sixties to about mid eighties, this club under Brian’s influence was The Rock WMC in Sheffield and even now puts a band on most Saturdays. Over the years we have seen all the mega top club bands at this venue. I even got engaged (well sort of) on the top deck of a bus going home from a Bitter Suite concert there. You will be sadly missed Brian and I hope the club manages to carry on your rock legacy in Sheffield clubland. From one who likes to rock, I salute you.

I was reading an article this week that in the UK we’re spending an average of £350 a year each on new gadgets but the sad fact is that 40% of us don’t even use half of the gadgets functions. I had to laugh on reading this as we get to an age where we all have problems with technology. On a daily basis I get a listener ringing me with problems with the smartphone he has, the other week he rang me and told me he’d lost his Google... (insert your own gag). Many talk of never having these problems back in t’old days and talk of simpler times, granted they were but, who would have ever thought that somewhere down the line we would be able to carry a camera, computer, calculator, walkman and your wireless in a device 7 inches long and two inches wide? The daft thing is the technology in some of these gadgets is moving at a very fast pace, I for one struggle to keep up! I still look back in fondness at the time that video recorders had a remote control on a wire that didn’t quite reach the settee and of course you’d always cover the clock on it with a cushion so that people couldn’t see you had one! I’m on leave from the Breakast Show at the moment and sunning myself in a caravan in Skipsea but please join Magic AM for breakfast weekday mornings from 6 - 10am and across the day. This weekend we collected outdoors on the Tanyard Shopping Centre in Wickersley and thankfully the rain stopped and the clouds disappeared to reveal glorious sunshine just as we got started. Altogether we collected £101.20 which will go towards the cost of keeping the station on the air. Thank you to our volunteers who came along to hold the tins and most of all thank you to the shoppers who dug deep and gave their loose change to a small local charity that relies on such generosity. We’ve got more collections already booked and would like to add some extra dates at other venues around Rotherham. To do this we need people to help out with the collections, would you be able to spare a couple of hours to help occasionally? There’s no obligation to commit to every collection or other work around the station, although we do have vacancies in the team at the moment if you’re interested. CAMRA CALLS ON COUNCILS TO STAND AS LAST LINE OF DEFENCE FOR PUBS A new report launched this week by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and the Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) encourages councils in England to become the last line of defence for pubs, whilst highlighting that more power needs to be transferred to councils from central Government. With 28 pubs a week closing across the UK the report could save hundreds more from closing forever by empowering local councils to block pub conversions from would-be developers. CAMRA’s Head of Communications Tom Stainer said: “CAMRA is grateful to the trailblazing councils who are leading the way in pub protection but, it is still too few, we want all councils to follow suit and we hope the ideas in this report provide a useful starting point. “Pub closures are not as simple as a badly run business or a changing marketplace, there are many external factors and pressures which have a bearing on pub survival.” The report calls on councils to value the role pubs play in communities by adopting strong pub protection policies in locals plans, listing pubs as Assets of Community Value and using ‘Article 4 Directions’ which ensure that planning permission is always required for change of use of a pub. But CAMRA is not letting central Government off the hook. CAMRA wants Government to bolster local councils’ toolkit of powers by reforming national planning law so communities and councils always have a say before a pub is demolished or converted into another use. "Weak planning laws are a major contributing factor to pubs closing and central Government need to give councils greater powers so they can do more to protect pubs from developers. "At the moment Ministers are letting down communities by allowing pubs to be demolished or converted to a whole range of retail uses without any planning permission being required," Tom Stainer added. It is clear that there is support from councils for greater protection for valued community pubs, with 45 out of 49 councils, which took part in a recent survey, considering pubs as valued community amenities worthy of protection. Despite this 33 out of 49 councils felt that existing planning regulations failed to give sufﬁcient protection to pubs from change of use or demolition. Jonathan Carr-West, Chief Executive of LGiU, said: “Pubs play a vital role in many communities. But across the country this precious resource is being lost at an alarming rate. Councils play a crucial part in protecting pubs and we hope that local authorities will draw inspiration from the examples featured in this report and act now to prevent our pubs from disappearing forever.”

Becca explains: “As soon as we come off stage, so many people come up to us. But then we’ve got the family and as soon as we see them, they say ‘that was amazing’ and it’s all a little bit emotional, we’re all doing this together type thing. Then we talk to the managers who are calm about it all. You have all these different balances of people who all give you the same criticism and nice words, but they all take you to different levels.” Marmozets are the future of the UK alt-rock scene...fact. Their shows quite literally leave you breathless (have you seen the size of their mosh pits?) whilst their tracks sum up the very essence of the band, the emotion, the passion, but moreover…the fresh, innovative talent these siblings have created. SHEFFIELD FRIENDS MAKE MUSICAL SHOWS A ‘STRUMMING SUCCESS’ FOR CANCER CHARITY When head teacher Dave Markham was diagnosed with incurable prostate cancer in 2010, his life was changed forever. But after coming to terms with the initial shock, he vowed to approach the challenge with the same positive attitude he has exerted throughout his life. Two years ago, after his diagnosis, the dad-of-three from Stannington teamed up with his friend, Mike Lydiat, and started performing a series of musical concerts throughout Shefﬁeld to raise money for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. The duo, who have been friends for over 20 years, play to a diverse range of audiences and have raised an outstanding £15,117.52 for the Cancer Charity in just two years . Former marathon and fell runner Dave (58) said: “It took me a long time to get my head around being diagnosed with cancer. I had always led an active lifestyle, so naturally I did wonder, ‘why me?’ “My diagnosis and subsequent treatment meant that I was no longer able to continue with my life-long career as a head teacher and therefore I found myself searching for something else to focus on. After being diagnosed at The Hallamshire Hospital, Dave had a radical prostatectomy – an

operation to remove the prostate gland – in the hope that the cancer would be cleared from his body. However, soon after his surgery doctors discovered the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes outside the prostate. Dave then underwent a course of radiotherapy at Weston Park Hospital in an attempt to stop the cancer from spreading further. He now attends the hospital every three months for injections to control the cancer, as well as taking daily drugs to keep symptoms at bay. Dave continued, “Through music I found a real purpose again, and knowing that our work could directly beneﬁt the lives of others living with cancer, it spurred us on to do more and more. “We never expected to raise such a large amount of money from what started out as a hobby, but this has been a ﬁrm motivator for us to continue supporting this fantastic cause.” The musical comrades, suitably calling themselves Toffee Music - ‘Two Old Fellas For Evening Entertainment’ - have now built up an established fan base, performing to a range of regular and new audiences on a weekly basis. Having recently released their latest CD, with help from Gadgetboy (Gadgetb)

Productions, they are increasingly overwhelmed by the support received from companies and venues across the city. In particular, The Shakespeare on Gibraltar Street has hosted Toffee Music's regular 'second Monday of the month' evening of Music Hall, Vaudeville and Standards of Yesteryear since they started in Jan 2012. And Andy Plummer's pub, The Huntsman at Thurlstone, has also been very supportive. I’ve had a much better week after the struggles of last time, not least because I’ve managed to get out twice! Both trips have been to Cheshire club waters, the first to Lymmvale, a beautiful extraction pit renowned for its tench fishing, and the second session after carp on the Belmont Estate. In some ways, I love this time of year; dragonflies flitting past, new chicks, everything in bloom, sunny days, warm nights and fish on the feed apparently, but in other ways, I find it a bit of a nightmare! As soon as June 16th comes around, when every angler is itching to get out on the bank, the fish often start spawning, resulting in the fishery immediately (and rightly) closing again! It’s also the time when the banks start

to get packed with anglers who prefer to enjoy the sunshine rather than the dull, cold days of winter and there is often so much natural food available that fish tend to ignore any baits! You just can’t win sometimes! My second proper tench session was enjoyable from start to finish. Lymmvale is surrounded by pine woods, so it’s packed with wildlife such as woodpeckers, barn owls, bats, deer, and all kinds of other things so even if the fish aren’t playing, there is always plenty to see, and it’s a simply lovely place to sit and spend some time. My rigs comprised the same Drennan maggot feeders and short hooklinks as last week, but this time the fish were certainly a little more co-operative and I managed to land several shiny tench to about 4lbs; admittedly not the bigger ones I hoped for, but nice fish in pristine condition and a pleasure to return safely. The weather was hot and cloying, and I espied much bigger fish patrolling the margins, but they appeared to be concentrating on natural food and eating the eggs of other tench! It’s been a strange kind of week weather wise, and I’m sure the high pressure and sudden changes haven’t made things easy for anglers to predict...never mind, that’s why we keep going back! I’ve also had a few hours in pursuit of carp. The water I tend to fish isn’t big, in fact compact and bijou is perhaps an adequate description, but in some ways it makes it harder to catch as the carp can see every move you make and respond accordingly! I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been watching fish only for an angler to clump up the bank, drop his kit and proceed to bang in bivvy pegs or banksticks then sit behind silent alarms without even

realising the fish were (before the noise) right in front of him! I’ve been doing very well recently on the Marukyu Credence Corn, a completely biodegradable alternative to imitation baits, so hair rigged a triple stack of the bait and passed the hook link through a pva mesh bag of crushed Fruit Spice boilies before depositing it at the edge of an island shelf. Perhaps because of the oppressively hot and bright conditions, the fish didn’t seem to be feeding very well, but a tempting mouthful, rather than a spread of bait can work well here, and the pva bag was the only bait offered. Within an hour, I’d missed a run, then a short time later I connected with an absolute screamer as a 20lb 3oz leather carp took off across the lake in an angry dash! This one fought so hard, I burned my finger on the monofilament as it made a run for the back of the island! Suitably restrained, the fish was photographed and safely returned to complete a much better week; it still leaves me with the age old conundrum though...where to fish next time??

GRAY VERY PLEASED WITH TRIO Stuart Gray is delighted with the Owls’ business on the transfer front so far this week with quality additions in the form of Chris Kirkland, Keiren Westwood and Sam Hutchinson. The trio penned permanent deals in S6 ahead of the 2014/15 campaign and the first pre-season friendly against York on Saturday. Kirkland re-signed after two seasons at Hillsborough, while talented shot stopper Westwood also checked in to compete for a place between the sticks. After a successful spell on loan from Premier League giants Chelsea last term, Hutchinson has committed his long term future to the Owls, signing a two-year deal. The head coach told swfc.co.uk: “It’s nice to do some good business with the two goalkeepers Chris Kirkland and Keiren Westwood. “It’s fantastic news for Sheffield Wednesday and fantastic news for the team, with the two of them fighting for one place. “The problem last season was that we had a quality goalkeeper in Chris Kirkland and then we brought in loan goalkeepers. “You’re always a phone call away from their parent clubs calling them back so I wanted two keepers inhouse competing with each other day in day out. “It will be fierce competition between the two of them. One thing I do know is that I have got a lot of confidence in these two goalkeepers.” As for Hutchinson, the utility man proved an excellent option for Wednesday in the engine room last term. Gray was delighted to acquire the services of the 24year-old on a permanent basis following the expiry of his contract at Stamford Bridge. He added: “We’ve got Sam over the line. When quality Premier League players are out of contract, there is a lot of competition to get their signature. “Sam had several options but I’m delighted to get him in the building. “I know what he can give the team, he can play in two or three positions for us and is 100 per cent committed.”

LOAN DEAL FOR CALLUM The Blades will allow Callum McFadzean to continue his development at Burton Albion in the first half of the season. The homegrown left-sided player has agreed a sixmonth loan deal with the Brewers and could come up against the Blades in the first pre-season fixture of the campaign on Saturday 19th July. McFadzean spent the end of last season on loan at the Pirelli Stadium, making ten appearances and scoring the winner in a 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle in April. New signing looking to make an impression... Febian Brandy believes he has some unfinished business in football, after penning a deal with Steve Evans’ Rotherham United.
