We are getting close to the end of the road with only four more writings of this column, which I have done for the past fourteen years. It is truly the end of an era, covering a period where I have met seven world champions in the sports of snooker and boxing and countless stars of showbusiness, many of whom are still my close friends. One particular very close friends and an absolute superstar is the lovely Sunny Daye. Sunny seems to have been strutting her stuff forever, and she is as good now if not better than ever. She is the bravest woman I have ever met, surviving more personal tragedy than anybody could be expected to bear, and has come out the other side smiling with a grim determination to get on with her life. Having had a busy life working the pubs, clubs and holiday camps, and reaching boot camp on the X Factor she courageously embarked on a change of life and went to the Costa del Sol with no conﬁrmed bookings and is currently having much success in Marbella and Puerto Banus, receiving rave reviews and an interview on local radio. Sunny has been my very close friend for many years and I consider it an honour and a privilege to be so. I was invited to speak at her son Blake’s funeral, and seeing her so bereft with grief, I for once was speechless, and it is not for me to be lost for words. I met world renowned medium and clairvoyant, Joanne Gregory, in my local 2where she had come to be entertained by Dave Mae and I was eager to make her acquaintance as my granddaughter had had two consultations with her and she was spookily accurate, telling her she was pregnant when she did not herself know, that she would have a girl born three weeks early and many other personal things. Every single thing she predicted came to fruition, little wonder I was anxious to pay her a visit. I went the following week, where she received messages from my late father about things only I could know. Also I was told things about my late mother. She told me things about my own personal life which has already come true, and I now know that I can now look

I was gratiﬁed to receive a really nice e-mail this week from Ian Bowen, advising me that he always reads my column, and how much he enjoys it, imploring me not to retire. This really touched me, but not enough to make me change my mind. I have done this column for the past fourteen years and feel that it is about the right time to hang up my pen. After a week of self-imposed alcohol abstinence, Caron and I visited JDs music bar to see a band, Vindictive, having had good reports, and we were not disappointed.

CARERʼS RIGHTS & THE CARE ACT FANCY A SHINDIG? People who are carers for the disabled currently have to request a carer’s assessment by contacting their local authority. The current carers’ rights fall under two statutes which allow them to make a request for a carer’s assessment. These are known as the Carers (Recognition and Services) Act 1995 and Carers and Disabled Children Act 2000. The local authority can only conduct an assessment if the carer requests it. The current assessments take account of a carer’s ability to continue in the caring role and how caring affects the carer’s aspirations with regard to work, education and leisure needs. The extent of the risk of the substantiality of the carer’s role is broken into four categories, each varying in intensity (crucial, substantial, moderate and low). These categories are defined in the statutory guidance prioritising need in the context of putting people first. Once the carer’s assessment has taken place, the local authority does not have a duty to provide the carer with services. The provision of services to the carer is at the discretion of the local authority. If the carer is assessed as being in a critical or substantial risk category then the local authority will have an obligation to make a response to that risk. The response by the local authority to provide support can be discharged by either providing the carer with services under Carers and Disabled Children Act 2000 s.2 or providing the disabled person with extra services. This is set to change under the new act. The Care Bill received Royal Assent on the 14th May 2014. This Bill is expected to become law in April 2015. The Care Bill should bring together existing care and support legislation, forming a new and modern set of laws which build on the system of putting carers and disabled’s wellbeing at the heart of the Act. The Care Bill simplifies, consolidates and improves the existing legislation, putting carers on an equal legal footing to those they care for. For the first time, carers will also be given a right to services. The principal driving force behind the new legislation is that the wellbeing principle currently applying only to the disabled person will

now apply to the carers as well. Under the new Bill there should be an integration and cooperation which should ensure that local authorities will provide services through integrated care and support where it is in the best interests of adults and carers with needs to do so. This will include the promoting and wellbeing of individuals, improving the quality of care and support for adults and carers as well as protecting adults who experience being at risk of abuse and neglect. Local authorities must have regard to services in their area and the importance of identifying carers and adults who are not having their needs met. The implication is that carers’ rights to achieve their day to day outcomes and access information will be improved and tightened up. The emphasis on the prevention will mean that carers should receive support early on and before reaching crisis point. The new Acts will also, controversially, change the system of paying for care, drawing on the report of the commission chaired by Andrew Dilnot and will introduce the idea of a cap on the amount to be paid for care over a person’s lifetime. The new system will cap the amount people themselves have to spend on the care they need, regardless of how much they have in savings or assets. It is proposed the cap on personal contributions to care will be £72,000. Once the cap is reached, the local authority must pay for any further care costs, regardless of the ﬁnancial means of the individual. However, the cap covers care costs only; accommodation costs in residential care are not included, and only the cost of eligible needs counts towards the cap – eligible needs can be described when there is critical or substantial risk to independence and well-being, or another consequence if those needs are not addressed. There will be increase on the means testing level so help begins far earlier than now, meaning people with modest wealth will be eligible for state help towards that cap. There is limited information on the means testing at present. The changes to assessment are due to come into effect in England in April 2014, and the introduction of the care cap is scheduled for April 2016.

This high profile event is part of the global movement to stop violence against women and girls, spear-headed by Eve Ensler of Vagina Monologues fame. It is supported by a variety of organisations including Sheffield City Council, CND, Sheffield First Partnership, City of Sanctuary, Sheffield Hallam University and the Workers’ Educational Association, with the intention of raising awareness of the many forms of gender-based violence in local and global contexts. On V-Day we’ll be dancing in solidarity with women everywhere. All or any groups at leisure, study, work or in the community can plan to take part in the city centre event. SHINDIG (Sheffield Demetia Involvement Group) is a city wide forum that meets 4 times a year and aims to provide opportunities for people living with dementia in Sheffield (and their family carers) to share ideas, views and opinions on local services and developments. The group name emerged because of the lively, sociable and fun atmosphere that is created and the logo depicts the commonly heard term of ‘all being in the same boat’. The group is jointly organised by the Trust and Sheffield Alzheimer’s Society. Membership is not fixed and SHINDIG is attended by about 18 people with dementia, 12 family carers and 10 staff from voluntary, health, social care and academic organisations in Sheffield. The group is primarily for people with dementia (carers and staff are welcome but are encouraged to attend with the person who they care for). After a social lunch, the group briefly convene as a whole before breaking into smaller groups of: • people with a dementia; • family carers; • or a mixed group of people with a dementia and carers who prefer to work together. Staff help facilitate and support conversations where necessary, while listening and committing to take back learning to their organisation. The group aims, over time, to engage people living with dementia in taking more of a role in setting the agenda and organisation. TRAMLINES ANNOUNCES TRAVEL PARTNERSHIP PLUS VIP TICKET GIVEAWAYS WITH #NOTDRIVING

Tramlines 2014 is proud to announce the return of South Yorkshire’s green travel campaign #notdriving as the ofﬁcial travel partner of this year’s festival, with four pairs of VIP weekend passes up for grabs for those pledging to leave the car at home and travel green between now and the festival.

With just over a week to go until Tramlines returns for its sixth year on Friday 25 to Sunday 27 July, the whole of Shefﬁeld is being prepped to turn into one big festival site that will welcome the likes of Public Enemy, Sister Sledge, Katy B, The Cribs and many more artists across four outdoor stages and in dozens of venues.

In line with the #notdriving campaign, which promotes the use of sustainable transport across South Yorkshire, reducing traffic and pollution across Sheffield, Tramlines festival-goers are encouraged to use public transport rather than drive to get to the festival as part of its quest to reduce its carbon footprint. In exchange for travelling green, four VIP weekend passes are available to win. To enter, applicants simply need to head to the Tramlines website (www.tramlines.org. uk) and pledge the number of miles in the counter for any journey made by foot, bike, public transport or even a car share with more than two people. The ever popular Buskers Buses are also back for 2014. Fast becoming the highlight of many people's Tramlines weekend, revellers can travel for free around the ever expanding festival site in style - serenaded by some of the event's hottest bands. Two routes will be in place to connect the peripheral venues within the city centre on Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon until 8pm. The Smoke BBQ Ale Trail bus travels from Arundel Gate out through Kelham Island and up through Crookes and Broomhill with different bands busking on the 40 minute route. The second option is the University Campus Barnsley Busker Bus, departing from the University at the Western Bank bus stop, and stopping off at Hope Works, CADs and Yellow Arch Studios taking 30 minutes for the round trip. Those wanting to board should look out for the special Buskers Bus stops across the city centre over the festival weekend. Tramlines advance weekend tickets are on sale from www. gigantic.com at £28 (plus 10% booking fee). Weekend tickets are available in advance only and come with a free festival programme (usually £3). Tickets will be available for sale on the door for a higher price of £16 per day, or £48 for all three days. Alongside the festival's core ticketed programme of live music, Tramlines 2014 sees the welcome return of freeentry, family-friendly areas such as the Peace Gardens, the Folk Forest, the Weston Park party and Barker’s Pool, which will be ﬁlled with street theatre, live spray-can art, fairground rides, African percussion workshops, woodcraft, a rodeo bull, bungee run, break-dancing battles and much more.

FAREWELL TO CLUBLAND PRO We are sorry to report the recent passing of an old Clubland stalwart, Andy Mack, the father of well known vocalist Lizzie, at the age of 94. Andy was an old pro wellknown in Clubland and a frequent visitor to Carlsboro Sounds on City Road - where he met up with many of his friends from the music industry. The funeral will held at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium on Wednesday 23rd July, at 2.00 pm.

Those of you that are regular readers to this column will know that I have a son, this past weekend he turned 2. Now, before he was born I was always bafﬂed by how many people would say to me “make the most of it whilst they are young/ a baby as time just goes nowhere”. They were right, I can’t actually believe where that time has gone, I’m sure there are many of you reading right now thinking ‘yes mine are grown up now’. The thing is we try and invest so much time into trying to bring them up as well as our already busy lives at work etc, it’s not until we get to a birthday that we think ‘crikey where did that go?’. You can always rely on Mothers to tell the truth though, she thinks I’m starting lose my boyish looks, (which I think went 20 years ago) but then again she did say I’d put weight on recently, to which I replied ‘I’ve had a lot on my plate’. As much as it bringing up a child can be hard work, I’ve found it so rewarding. I’ve been lucky enough to stand on stage in front of 70,000 people, meet pop stars broadcast from a helicopter, but having him in my life has knocked those experiences out of the park. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity Weekly Feature

COULD YOUR PUB SUPPORT WESTON PARK HOSPITAL ‘FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY?’ A pub landlord from Nether Edge in Sheffield has traded pulling pints for park runs and raising ‘cash for his ‘tash’, to say thank you to the hospital that treated him for cancer. Father-of-two, Gareth Williams (38), has taken part in a range of fundraising events over the last four years to raise money for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, after being diagnosed with testicular cancer in September 2010. Gareth, who owns The Union Hotel in Nether Edge, along with his wife, Sarah, were inspired to start raising money for Weston Park Hospital’s dedicated charity just weeks after Gareth’s initial diagnosis.

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity funds world-class cancer research and helps to improve the treatment and care for the increasing population of cancer patients from across South Yorkshire and beyond. After initially complaining of stomach ache and suffering from thyroidrelated problems, Gareth was later diagnosed with testicular cancer and given the devastating news that it had spread to his liver, lungs and lymph nodes. “My cancer diagnosis came as a complete shock” said Gareth. “You honestly never think it will happen to you and when it does, your outlook on life completely changes. “I started chemotherapy at Weston Park Hospital straightaway and although I was extremely unwell, my wife Sarah began

organising a fundraising challenge for friends, staff and pub locals to start growing moustaches in support of the Cancer Charity.” Gareth underwent surgery in June 2011 and courageously returned to work soon after, once again putting plans together for further quirky fundraising initiatives. To date, The Union Hotel has impressively raised over £16,000 for the Cancer Charity and Gareth plans to continue fundraising throughout 2014 to mark the charity’s 20th anniversary. Charity Fundraiser, Sarah Cross said, “Whether it’s placing a collection tin on the bar or organising a special fundraising night, the support we receive across the region from pubs and clubs makes such a huge difference to the lives

of cancer patients in our region.” This year, to mark 20 years of ﬁghting cancer locally, the Cancer Charity is encouraging pubs from far and wide to come together ‘For One Night Only’ by holding a unique event of their choice.

EXCITEMENT BUILDS FOR TRAMLINES Sheffield is bracing itself for Tramlines Festival 2014, easily the most highly anticipated weekend of our city’s live musical calendar. With over 100 venues taking part in what is expected to be the most successful Tramlines yet, M-Live is here to give you our top ten best acts of the weekend… call us your festival fairy Godmother! We know that festivals with a massive line-up can sometimes be a tad daunting, however this also means you can discover fresh, up-coming new bands right in your very city. So to number 10, we suggest you check out Tropic Of Youth. Having performed on a host of stages throughout the steel city, this group are performing at Queens Social club on Saturday 26th July so make sure you check them out! Number 9 goes to Toddla T Sound. From producer to DJ to mixer, this Sheffield born star holds a Radio 1 show and will be kick starting the party on the main stage on Friday 25th. Three Trapped Tigers are at number 8 position, an abstract southern band who have tantalised audiences in festivals across the world. This three piece are at Corporation on Sunday 27th. Number 7 goes to The Crookes, Sheffield’s indie piece who are set to release their 3rd LP Soapbox very soon. Catch these at Fusion and Foundary on Sunday. NME favourites Slow Club are on our number 6 ‘bands to watch’ list, who are performing at Leadmill on Sunday. Forming in 2005, the duo have just finished working on their latest release ‘Complete Surrender.’

Rolo Tomassi are on our number 5 chart position, an abstract electro/hardcore clan from Sheffield. Bursting at the seams with innovative, math rock hits, this experimental group are for fans who like their music which packs a whole hearted punch. These are performing on Sunday at Corporation. Katy B stands proud on our number 4 list of bands to watch. With hits ‘Lights On,’ ‘Katy On A Mission’ and ‘Broken Record,’ this Southern star will be seizing the main stage on Friday 25th July. Number 3…Hey Sholay. Describing themselves as ‘the children that lived to see grey…’ (yep, us neither) the five piece are wacky, outlandish and have a bloody amazing national fan base. Catch these at The Leadmill on Sunday 27th. The top 2…just missing out on the number 1 position is Funeral For A Friend. Pioneers of the post-hardcore movement, this Welsh clan have inspired some of the genres most legendary bands and have headlined festivals across the world. Don’t miss these at Corporation on Saturday! But to the number one band to watch at Tramlines festival…no other than The Cribs. Stemming from Wakefield, this brotherhood trio have supplied the world with hits ‘Mirror Kisses,’ ‘Hey Scenester’ and ‘Men’s Needs,’ killer tunes from one of the North’s proudest exports. Sunday. Main Stage. We cannot wait!

LEEDS FESTIVAL CREEPS CLOSER AS FESTIVAL SEASON GETS UNDERWAY Undeniably one of the best festivals on the entire summers calendar, Reading and Leeds is to make its triumphant return from 22nd – 24th August. Housing a gigantic collection of bands, acts and musicians from across the musical spectrum, this year marks headlining positions held by Queens Of The Stone Age, Paramore and Blink 182…and hell are we all in for a treat. What makes Reading and Leeds festival quite so special? The enormous party atmosphere? Camping in a tent for a weekend of unadulterated chaos? How about the sheer amount of performers at the three day event, with the Lock Up Stage in full dedication of everything that’s awesome?! Whether it be hardcore, pop punk or alternative rock, Reading and Leeds should be your primary port of call for a weekend of killer live bands. Performing on Sunday 24th August on The Lock Up Stage, Letlive. are equally as excited as we are about the festival. Jason Butler explains…” You can safely assume how excited and ﬂattered we are to be considered for such a festival!” This year will see pop punk legends Blink 182 headline Reading and Leeds, returning after their main stage appearance back in 2010. No doubt destined to produce the set of the entire weekend, the band are bolstering up to deliver on a colossal scale. “I’m stoked to play Reading and Leeds 2014,” reveals bassist Mark Hoppus. “It’s our fourth time playing the festivals and we’re very honoured.” Blink 182 will also be joined by Southern rock pack

My good run of luck continues, and this week I’ve been after bream... Whether you love them or loathe them, bream are a favourite of mine and I love seeing a big ‘ol slab slip over the net cord! A return to Allestree Park on The Earl of Harrington’s AC ticket gave me seven acres to target and the water contains a good head of bream to around 6lbs, maybe bigger, which are usually quite obliging, so I set out full of confidence! I chose a spacious peg giving access to open water; this particular swim has a plateau directly in front at around forty yards, and several gullies and holes which form part of the shoal patrol routes, so I balled in a load of Marukyu Sweet Success groundbait (twenty balls to start with!) and settled down to wait until the slabs made their way around to me. I’d set both rods up a small method feeder and I was keen to try the new Marukyu soft hooker pellets which were buried deep within the method ball to ensure they stayed on the hook! Previously, I’ve tried the usual cage feeder approach on Allestree with small hooks and long hook lengths, but I just can’t seem to find the consistency I get with ‘the method’. I may get slightly fewer bites, but I find I’m at less risk of ‘bumping’ a fish and spooking the shoal which can ruin a session before it even gets going... After an hour or so, a deep flank rolled over the baited spot and I started to get odd bleeps on the alarms as the bait was disturbed; a sudden ‘one toner’ indicated a positive take, so I lifted the rod and was into the first fish of the day. A nice deep bream of around 3lbs was deposited into the waiting keepnet, and as I baited the hook again, the second rod juddered on the rest as another bream fell foul of the trap! The same

result transpired and the second ﬁsh joined his mate in the net; an excellent start! This continued for about an hour, then the swim suddenly went very quiet as the shoal moved on. I often compare bream to the family Labrador, wandering around aimlessly just looking for food, eating anything they ﬁnd, then moving on...unless you constantly feed them biscuits, they move onto the next family member! I deposited another ten balls of groundbait in an attempt to draw them back, but a further quiet period saw me catapult in yet another ten balls of feed and some Marukyu Skrill pellets; bream love pellets! Eventually, the shoal returned and I managed to

pick off some more fish before the end of my session. I finished with around 70lbs of bream, with a biggest fish of perhaps 4lbs, so nothing huge, but fairly consistent sport in bright conditions and a good result for the new baits. When I needed a change, 10mm ‘Change Bait’ boilies provided an option, but overall, the new soft hookers did well. As the name suggests they are very soft, so casting to the horizon wasn’t an option; a gentle lob with them buried in the ball of groundbait was enough and they certainly went down a storm with the resident bream!
