Copley’s Column

This has been a week of over indulgence for me in the alcohol department, mainly due to Dronfield yet again having some first class entertainment. Tuesday night was a momentous occasion, with Russ Dennett hosting his final open mic night at the Yew Tree, Coal Aston, after some fantastic nights in a super venue ably hosted by Andy and Cath Jarvis. Russ has his own music lounge, JD’s on Dronfield’s High Street, where open mic nights will be now held on Tuesday nights. From a personal point of view, I would like to thank Russ, Andy and Cath for many very entertaining nights with top music and excellent beer. On Thursday night, the Victoria, Dronfield, always the place for the best in music, engaged top local band, the Canyon, who play and sing some fantastic music. It was nice to see Nicola’s parents come out to support her.’ It was good to see my pal Patrick Kenny, who had made the mammoth trip from Mosborough to see the band. Patrick is an excellent folk singer, who I doubtlessly impressed by performing a duet with him singing ‘Dublin City in the rare old times’ Not only did I know the song word for word, but sang it in a passable Irish accent, which could have passed for a member of the Dubliners. Rest assured, I am not thinking of a new career as a folk singer. Keeping the good times rolling, I went to JD’s bar on Friday night to see a newly formed band Riff Raff Union who were excellent and played to a capacity crowd. I am well acquainted with three of the members of the band, Colin Sawford on guitar, Pete Morgan on bass and the wonderful Andy Birks, a lead singer with an incredible voice. By coincidence, I have booked Andy’s uncle Steve, aka Vincent, aka Nierlly Diamond at the Victoria , Dronfield on Thursday. Steve has sung at the Victoria for many years and remains as popular as ever. Anyone who has not seen this extremely talented singer/ songwriter is strongly advised to attend this Thursday . I have always been delighted to promote worthy charities in this column and the annual Paul

Across

Dungworth Charity day takes place this Saturday 26th July. The day kicks off on the recreation ground Carr Lane Dronfield with a charity football match between Old School Victoria versus Dronfield Miners. I did offer to turn out for Old School Victoria, but the goalkeeper’s jersey had already been taken. At mid-day, a music festival takes place in the Miners Arms car park where amongst other acts, John Alex, Acoustic Lily and the Canyon will be on stage. Chris Clarke, Mark Finnegan and Nathan Turner work tirelessly to promote this annual fundraiser which benefits Sheffield hospitals. This Friday, Caron and I will be the guests of Diana Edwards for her Agnetha and Frida Abba tribute night at top restaurant Viva Tequila.

Weekly Wit With... STEELERS ALBERT ANNOUNCE SNODGRASS FIXTURES FOR NEW SEASON The Steelers this week confirmed their schedule for the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) 201415 season, boasting an attractive fixture list schedule which will include over 20 Saturday night hockey games at the Motorpoint Arena House of Steel and sees ticket prices held at last season’s prices. Owner Tony Smith said “We have worked closely with Rob O’Shea and Joe Waldron at the Motorpoint Arena since taking over the club. We have seen our available dates get better year on year and to be able to tell our fans that 19 of the 25 games being played at the arena next season will be on Saturdays will please them and excites me. I can’t thank Rob and Joe enough for the close co-operation”. Arena General Manager Rob O’Shea says “We always work closely with the Steelers to offer the best available venue dates. As all arenabased ice hockey fans know, Saturday dates are at a premium and this can necessitate the re-scheduling of the occasional fixture, but we work closely with the club when this happens. We’re really happy we’ve been able to give such a great set of dates from the start, and we’re hoping it will help to put even more bums on seats and silverware in the trophy cabinet for the forthcoming season!” Steelers will play a minimum of 25 home games at the Motorpoint Arena this coming season (19 Saturdays, 4 Sundays and 2 Fridays (including Boxing Day). The remaining 7 fixtures (including the pre-season exhibition games Vs. Coventry Blaze) will be played at Ice Sheffield (2 Saturdays, 1 Sunday and 4 Wednesdays). “It is without doubt the best fixture list we could have hoped for” continued Smith “It will give us the best opportunity to encourage fans to come and visit the Arena on a child friendly Saturday and witness the biggest, best and most exciting sporting event in Sheffield. We intend to take our off ice show to a new level with investments already made to the Jumbo-tron scoreboard and lighting”. “Every night a Steelers fan will have the chance to win a car, large cash prizes, shirts off the back of our Star players. Most of all they will be entertained and excited by a Gerad Adams “Play Off Championship” side that will come out to play hard and aggressive every night “The Sheffield Steelers are well into their third decade of providing entertainment and success however our history and reputation was first of all built on Saturday night being Steelers night at the Arena and I am delighted that we are returning to the vast majority of fans preferred hockey night. My aim three seasons ago was to average 5,500 fans a night at the Arena. I am confident that with this new schedule we will have every chance to hit that target. Saturday = Steelers at the Arena” Steelers opening game is exhibition action against Coventry Blaze on Saturday 30th August at ICE Sheffield, with tickets now on sale for this game. The EIHL programme then commences the following Saturday, 6th September with a special “Play Off Trophy Banner Raising Night” for the home opener against Dundee Stars. The Steelers also confirmed that the popular Boxing Day fixture against the Nottingham Panthers would again take place at the Motorpoint Arena as would the quarter final play off fixture on Saturday 28th March. The 2014 half of the season will go on sale at 9am on Friday 25th July. Tickets will be available in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 56 56 and online at www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk. The Steelers full schedule can be found on the official web site www.sheffieldsteelers.co.uk.

“You’ve got to help me doctor, it’s my foot.” I pleaded, bursting into the surgery. “It’s riddled with leprosy.” “Calm down, man.” He said, “What on earth makes you think you’ve got leprosy in your foot?” “It’s still on the bus.” As a tribute to the loyalty of my best mate, I have a poster of him blu-tacked to my wall. He’s always stuck up for me. So, I carried out the well imagined experiment of strapping buttered toast onto a cat. I dropped the cat from a considerable height to see what would happen. I obtained unexpected results! I am now banned from owning a cat. My girlfriend says I commit to things too quickly. She sounds just like my fourth wife. I read a newspaper headline the other day. It read: ‘Britain faces crisis!’ I thought: what? We’re running out of faces? I really struggled to upload ‘Holiday Photos 2’ to Facebook. They do say the second album’s the hardest. If I had a pound for every time my wife wasted money on a ridiculous impulse buy, I’d have enough cash to complete the restoration of the 17th century musket I won on eBay. My wife was about to leave me because she caught me wearing her clothes. “I can change!” I shouted as she slammed the front door. As my flatmate headed towards the front door this morning, I said to him, “Where the hell are you going dressed like that?” “To Dave’s fancy dress party,” he replied. “I’m a tortoise.” I said, “His party is not until tomorrow night!” He said, “I know, but I’m a tortoise.”

CUED UP FOR THE WOMEN OF STEEL SHEFFIELD BUILDS ON TOUR LEGACY NOW OPEN Sheffield’s ‘Women of Steel’ statue has taken another significant step closer to becoming a reality. A cheque for £21,292 was be presented by the organisers of the Cue Ball charity dinner to the Women of Steel Appeal on Thursday 3 July. Snooker legends, celebrities, civic dignitaries and the business community came together to raise the money at the annual black-tie dinner that took place at the Mercure St Paul’s Hotel on Good Friday. This dinner heralds the start of the World Snooker Championship each year. Mick Crofts, patron of the Cue Ball charity, said: “The dinner was a really special event this year and we were privileged to have four of the Women of Steel as guests of honour. It’s great to be able to support a cause that will create a permanent and lasting legacy in the city.” Woman of Steel Kathleen Roberts said: “We had such a lovely evening and were so well looked after. I always watch the snooker on TV so it was fantastic to be amongst the stars and people have given so generously.” This was the 11th Annual Cue Ball dinner and over £230,000 has now been raised for various charities over the years. The cheque takes the total funds raised, so far, for the Women of Steel Statue to £136,000 - just £14,000 short of the £150,000 total needed to get the statue in place. There will be further fundraising events over the next few months to reach the

target, finishing with a star studded folk concert in Sheffield Cathedral on 26 November, when it is hoped the target will be achieved. Cllr Julie Dore said: “It’s fantastic that Cue Ball and the World Snooker Championship, which is so much a part of Sheffield, has supported our Women of Steel appeal in this way and helped to make the tribute to these wonderful women a reality.” The just larger than life size bronze statue will go in Barker’s Pool and is being made by leading sculptor Martin Jennings. Martin worked with the Women of Steel on the design of the statue that features two women in overalls linked arm in arm. Sheffield is aiming to build on the excitement generated from successfully hosting one of the world’s top sporting events. It is estimated that at least 1.5 million people watched Stage 2 of the Tour de France as the world’s top cyclists swept through Sheffield on Sunday, with viewers from over 180 countries around the world following the race on TV. Several projects are already in hand to build on this enthusiasm and the massive boom in cycling in recent years to improve the quality of life in Sheffield and people’s general health. The City Council is aiming to build on their investment in hosting this year’s prestigious event by using it as a platform to encourage more people to take to their bikes. A number of innovative schemes are planned to improve the local infrastructure and make more use of the city’s green cycle routes. This would link into the existing cycle network, mainly along the main radial routes and also into the 20 mph zones. Cycling will be made easier and safer and the local cycling provision will also be reviewed and improved, including cycle parking in key locations and ‘Bike Doctor’ sessions to help cyclists maintain their bikes. 2014 UK’S BIGGEST PUB POKER LEAGUES MERGE TRAMLINES PROGRAMME

The UK’s biggest pub poker leagues have merged in a significant deal. Redtooth Poker and The Nuts Poker League have joined forces bringing together a combined total of more than 250,000 registered players – making it ten times bigger than any other league in the country. In what is the biggest development in pub poker, existing branding of both parties will continue, but with Redtooth Poker taking overall ownership and ensuring a variety of linkups between the two leagues. This includes the five national Nuts Poker winners joining Redtooth Poker’s Vegas 100, where a hundred players win a week-long trip to Las Vegas. Redtooth Poker has more than 950 weekly leagues around the country, while The Nuts Poker League has around 330. Martin Green, managing director of Barlborough-based Redtooth, said: “This is a significant development for our business and the pub poker industry at large. The coming together of these two leagues will make us ten times bigger than any other pub poker

league in the country. It’s a very exciting time for everyone involved.” Founder of the Wrexham-based The Nuts Poker League, Steve Bellis, is known for securing £65,000-worth of investment on the BBC’s Dragons’ Den from Theo Paphitis and Deborah Meaden – becoming the first person to leave the den with more money than he went in for. Steve will continue to provide a support role to Redtooth and attend all five of The Nuts Poker League yearly finals. The Nuts Poker League has 16 franchisees, across Scotland, England and Wales. All the franchisees will continue to provide The Nuts Poker leagues, but each will become part of the Redtooth team. Steve Bellis said: “This is a great deal for The Nuts Poker League. We are joining the biggest pub poker league in the country in Redtooth, which has an excellent reputation amongst players in the UK. “Importantly, The Nuts Poker League name will remain and continue to provide players with an opportunity to play in their local pub, as well as progress

to the national finals. And by joining with Redtooth, even more exciting opportunities will open up to those players.” In total, the Redtooth Poker League, which was recently named the Best Poker League in the UK at the prestigious British Poker Awards - an accolade won by The Nuts Poker League in the past - has seen continued growth over the past seven years. Pubs pay a flat fee of £20 a week to host the Redtooth Poker season, which runs in four quarters during a 12-month period and culminates in two national finals with the best 100 poker players win a trip to Las Vegas in May. Martin Green added: “The Nuts Poker League has enjoyed great success in recent years and this deal will allow us to spread the word of Redtooth to areas of the country where we are keen to grow. “By joining forces, we will be able to offer a variety of poker models to meet the needs of the pubs. We are also interested to hear from any existing Redtooth Poker players who may wish to set-up their own franchise under

ON YA BIKE MAGIC AM with Glenn Pinder

So after completely missing it due to my hols, cycling is booming in Britain following the Tour de France’s visit earlier this month which is brilliant.. Bookings for specialist cycling holidays are up 40% and the company that runs the country’s national cycle path network says 50 million more journeys have happened on their network this year. Some other good news that came out over the past few days is that talks are under way to decide the route of the three-day “Tour of Yorkshire” cycling event, following the success of the Tour de France. Good on you Yorkshire - it was great to see you on the world stage and made me proud to be a Yorkshireman. Join me all this week on the Magic AM Breakfast Show - listen in at 08.20am for a chance to win tickets to the Think Pink Motown and Soul BBQ - Sunday 24th August (Bank Holiday Weekend) at Doncaster Racecourse Hoping you can join me for breakfast weekday mornings on Magic AM from 6 - 10am and across the day on 990, 1305, 1548 AM, Digital Radio and online at magicam.co.uk for just great songs.

OUT NOW PLUS WRISTBAND EXCHANGE INFORMATION

The official Tramlines 2014 programme is hot off the press and available to purchase at venues across the city. The programme has everything needed to get submerged in the Tramlines festival experience: full A-Z listings, venue schedules, maps, artist profiles, fringe and family-friendly venue information and, finally, the all-important clash finder. The programme costs just £3 and is on sale at Tramlines venues and other Sheffield businesses including City Hall, Millennium Gallery, The Harley, Steam Yard and Sheffield Mind on London Road. Public Enemy, Sister Sledge, Katy B, The Cribs, Annie Mac, Toddla T Sound, The Beat, Funeral For A Friend and Simian Mobile Disco are among hundreds taking to the stages and core venues at Tramlines 2014 which attracted 95,000 people in 2013. Further highlights will take place across the Fringe and free-entry areas such as the Peace Gardens, Weston Park and the Folk Forest. Entry to the following venues will be strictly limited to ticket-holders only across the Tramlines weekend: Devonshire Green, Leadmill, Foundry/Fusion, Octagon, o2 Academy, Hope Works, The Harley, Queens Social Club, City Hall, Cathedral, Yellow Arch, The Night Kitchen, Millennium Galleries, Corporation and Fez. Although ticket holders are permitted entry to these venues, entry cannot be guaranteed if a venue is full to capacity. This is standard safety policy procedure carried out by all venues, all year round. To avoid disappointment, people are advised to arrive early, especially on Devonshire Green which is expected to get very busy. Advance tickets must be exchanged for a wristband prior to admission at the Box Office at City Hall between Thursday 24 July and Sunday 27 July. All wristbands must be collected in person with no exceptions. Box Office opening hours can be found at www. tramlines.org.uk/info Advance weekend tickets are currently still on sale from www. gigantic.com priced at £28 plus booking fee. They are available in advance only and are expected to sell out, as in 2013. Once advance tickets are offsale, on-theday tickets will be available for purchase from various box office sites around the festival including City Hall, Devonshire Green, The University of Sheffield at the o2 Academy. On-the-day tickets will be subject to an additional charge and will be priced at £16 per day. For up to the minute information about Tramlines 2014 visit www.tramlines.org.uk or follow Tramlines on Twitter @tramlines

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

Hospital radio first began back in the 1920’s to bring football commentaries to patients. For many years Radio Nightingale provided commentaries from Rotherham United home games and we are delighted to be putting the finishing touches to the arrangements which will see us broadcasting from the New York Stadium for the first time this season. We are looking for additional volunteers to join the team providing the commentaries, working both at the ground and in the studio. Volunteers must be available for the majority of Rotherham United home games throughout the football season. Initial training will be provided on Monday evenings. All volunteers must be over the age of 18, experience of similar work is preferred but not essential, and a good understanding of the rules and tactics of football is expected as a minimum. Knowledge of other sports and a willingness to attend alternative sporting venues would be advantageous. There would be an expectation that individuals contribute towards the stations fundraising activities in addition to the broadcasting roles. To get involved apply online at www.radionightingale.org.uk; for informal discussions contact Mel Jaques on 01709 304244. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of Rotherham Hospital on 945 &1350mw, Hospedia and online. For more information about the station visit www.radionightingale.org.uk Twitter: @nightingale1350 Facebook: radionightingale

TOP OF THE LEAGUE Review: The Human League, 20/07/14, Guilfest By Kt Evans

Straight out of the new romantics era of what is fondly known as the ‘ultimate cool’ of vintage music, The Human League will forever be pioneers of this widespread genre. From outlandish hairstyles to awe-inspiring stage personas, the three piece electronic pack from Sheffield headlined this year’s Guilfest 2014…and hell did they do it with Northern pride. Opening up with ‘Mirror Man,’ killer hit released back in 1982, what is so inspirational about The Human League is how relevant and current their music still sounds today. Hell we’ll forget about the over-

CRIBS PREVIEW Sheffield’s greatest celebration of national aswell as international live music, Tramlines festival is returning to the steel city from 25th – 27th July. Spread over almost 100 venues within and around the centre, the main stage once again is to be situated on Devonshire Green, where you will expect to see a fun fair, heaps of independent market stores along with a host of your favourite bands. Headlining Sunday 27th and one of the North’s finest exports…The Cribs. It would be hard not to already know a little prior knowledge about Wakefield based three piece The Cribs. Forming in 2002, the three brothers; Gary, Ross and Ryan Jarman have supplied the world with innovative indie hits such as killer tunes ‘Men’s Needs,’ ‘Hey Scenester’ and ‘Mirror Kisses,’ whilst evolving their own unique sound of gritty, northern indie. The trio released their self titled debut album way back in 2004, a far cry from their now professionally polished, smooth sounding hits. With songs ‘Another Number’ and ‘You Were Always The One’ ensuring commercial success for the album, their debut release landed them a top 100 UK album chart position. Not bad to say that the group set up their own recording studio in a deserted mill where they lived! To 2005 and The Cribs release their second album, ‘The New Fellas.’ Once again seeing them chart within the UK top 100, music magazine NME also names the release number 11 on their ‘albums of 2005’ readers list. Other singles ‘Mirror Kisses’ and ‘Hey Scenesters’ littered the release, however international success was touched within The Cribs third album; ‘Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever.’ Easily the groups most recognisable, infamous hit, ‘Men’s Needs’ ensured them a household hit we simply just could not get out of our heads! Three albums proceeded, including a brief stint with Smith’s guitarist Johnny Marr who joined the band in 2009 to 2011, alongside countless local, national and worldwide festival appearances. No strangers to the main stages of indie, The Cribs live show incorporates all that is fresh, relevant and down right bloody entertaining about Wakefield’s prized possession. Make sure you catch The Cribs on Sunday 27th July on the main stage at Tramlines Festival 2014. Tickets are still available and can be purchased from www.tramlines.org.uk. Tramlines will see Katy B, Slow Club, Public Enemy and Funeral For a Friend perform (plus many more) Check out the website for the full line-up and more info.

synthesized key board or the call and response vocals, however their underlying vibe is still very much a crucial part of today’s music scene. Don’t believe us? Listen to ‘Being Boiled,’ a Human League classic which paved the way for instrumental electronic hits to draw influence from. Need more evidence? ‘Don’t You Want Me Baby’…enough said! Other belters ‘The Lebanon’ and ‘Louise’ followed, each allowing the 3000 strong audience to well and truly sink their teeth into a reincarnated piece of 1980’s pie. But what is the very essence of The Human League and moreover, what makes them such a mighty force to be reckoned with? One word… outfits. Whether it be ridiculously cool white fur coats (plus black Raybans and red lipstick of course) or silver cocktail dresses and feather bowers for the female vocalists, the trio are bringing back an era which pioneered the central core behind Sheffield’s finest…extravagance. It’s hard not to tell how over and above The Human League would go to ensure their crowd are having the time of their lives…from a first class light show to a somewhat extraordinary background screen, we simply could not take our eyes of each and every member of the group. Closing their one hour and fifteen minute set with ‘Don’t You Want Me,’ the group emerged for a two sing encore to include ‘Being Boiled’ and ‘Living In Electric Dreams.’ A superbly rounded set to close one of the UK’s friendliest family festivals, The Human League remind us all how much we want to be children of the 80’s. Those hair cuts, stiletto heels and tie tops…hell we could rock that! Check out www.thehumanleague.co.uk for all the latest tour dates, pictures and exclusives from the band.

The Tramlines weekend is without a doubt one of the biggest events in the Sheffield calendar. Growing bigger and better each year, with big effort and contributions from Sheffield’s likeminded promoters, bands, DJ’s artists and performers, all working together to bring something very, very special over the annual weekend. Last year, House promoters Delve Deeper had an amazing time hosting an event at the outdoor terrace at Bloo88 and upstairs in the Loft which was packed from start to finish with excellent music and smiling, dancing people. This year they are pleased to announce that they will back on the terrace of Bloo88 on Tramlines Saturday, with the addition of upstairs in the Loft. The terrace will concentrate on the Delve Deeper, deeper side of house, with our upstairs room providing everything from disco, soul and funk. As per usual their line-up includes a great selection of local talent with a special guest which we are incredibly pleased to announce. This year’s guest DJs are Audiowhores who have been holding their name on the Top 10 of the deep house charts for some-time, signed to labels such as Defected, Noir and Soulfuric. Regularly clocking up air-miles with gigs in prestigious events including the Miami Winter Music Conference, Sonar, pretty much every credible event in Ibiza and now Tramlines! Audiowhores were ‘born’ in 2000 when Graham and Adam met at legendary UK club ‘Out In The Sticks’; sharing a passion for the sounds of Dave Lee, Knee Deep, Masters At Work, Full Intention and Jazz ‘n’ Groove, Adam and Graham resolved to work together. The guys haven’t looked back and have gone on to build up a prolific portfolio of original productions and remixes earning them global recognition and respect as a top UK house music duo. It was back in 2012 when the boys got their 1st Beatport top 5 with ‘Sometimes’ which was also Traxsource’s #1 downloaded track of the year.

Recently the boys have been hot property on Traxsource & Beatport, having racked up six #1 hits on Traxsource in the space of 18 months. 2013 has certainly seen them propel to greater heights! The list of artists remixed by Audiowhores reads like ‘who’s who’ of house including Barbara Tucker, Kathy Brown, Julie McKnight, Hardsoul, The Sunburst Band, Ce Ce Peniston, Loletta Holloway, The Shapeshifters, Imaani & Roland Clark. Meanwhile, their original productions have seen them team up Haze, Stee Downes, Roland Clark, Pete Simpson, Groove Assasin plus many more. Audiowhores maintain a busy international DJ schedule spanning the world; Spain & Ibiza, Georgia, Algeria, Austria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Holland, Switzerland, Slovakia, Germany, Norway, Dubai, Bahrain, Brazil, China, Asia, Australia and USA to name a few! Other DJs appearing at this amazing event include Delve Deeper promoter/residents Liam C & Jenny Fu, Set2 (Collect!), Dan Metcalfe (Bed), Duncan Allot (Seven Hills Soul Boys) and David Platts (Delve Deeper) on the terrace. Whilst the upstairs Disco Loft will be loaded with the finest music courtesy of some of Sheffield’s best with Winston Hazel (Kabal), Solid State & Nigel Fischer (All Out War/Society), David Hardy (Jus’House/More about Music), Jonathan Stevenson (All Ears) an Louis Clarke (Reel House FM) DELVER DEEPER @ Tramlines Bloo88 - West Street S1 6pm-2am (terrace – 6-1am, loft 8-2am) For more information - please seek Delve Deeper on facebook.

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity Weekly Feature

FAMILY FOOTBALL MATCH HITS ABOVE THE BAR IN MEMORY OF FATHER A mother, son and daughter from High Green have raised a staggering £1390 from an annual football match in memory of their much loved husband and father, Stuart Henshaw. In 1999, football fanatic, Stuart was diagnosed with incurable Lung Cancer at Weston Park Hospital and given only a few weeks to live. Despite this devastating diagnosis and with the help and expertise of Weston Park Hospital consultant, Trish Fisher, Stuart was allowed an extra 2 and a half years to see his grand children grow up. On the 10th July 2002, Stuart finally lost his cancer battle and passed away surrounded by his loving family and friends. Just a year afterwards, on the anniversary of his death, his wife, the family decided to organise a

football match, BBQ and raffle to raise funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. “Dr Trish Fisher bought us such invaluable extra time with Stuart that we simply had to do something to repay the hospital for its outstanding treatment and care.” On the 6th July, Stuart’s friends and family plus people from the High Green community gathered at The Pack Horse Inn to support the Cancer Charity for the 11th year. “Over the years we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of people on the day which have made it possible for us to raise such an incredible amount overall.” “We just hope that our efforts will allow other families those precious extra years with loved ones.”

Throughout 2014, the cancer charity is marking its 20th anniversary by funding a wide variety of projects for the hospital, including the completion of the new Clinical Research Unit and the Day Case reception refurbishment. To ensure that support for Weston Park Hospital can continue and to celebrate their 20th anniversary, Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is encouraging social clubs and pubs to come together ‘For One Night Only’ by holding a unique event of their choice. To find out more about how to get involved in For One Night Only visit www. wphcancercharity.org.uk/events or complete and return the registration form below.

CARRY ON TOURING

COACH HOLIDAYS

ARE YOU FIT TO TOW IN YORKSHIRE AND THE NORTH EAST THIS SUMMER?

People driving in Yorkshire and the North East are being urged to help cut the number of towing related incidents on Highways Agency roads this summer by checking their caravan or trailer before setting out. There were 397 towing related incidents in Yorkshire and the North East recorded on Highways Agency roads between July and September in 2013, and 2415 incident nationally, each potentially causing long delays and distress to those involved. But many of these incidents could have been avoided if a few simple checks had been carried out, particularly where the caravan or trailer had not been used since the previous year. Highways Agency Service Delivery Manager Andy Withington says: “The vast majority

of caravanners and people who tow are safe and responsible drivers – however we do see a big peak in caravan and towing incidents during the summer, many of which could be avoided if drivers had carried out a few simple checks. “If a car is off the road for months it’s common sense to check it is roadworthy before taking it back out and we strongly urge people to do the same with their trailers and caravans.” Frequent causes of incidents include overloading the caravan or trailer, a mismatch with the towing vehicle, tyres which have burst because they have not been checked or replaced where needed and poor towing technique. The Highways Agency advises anyone towing a caravan or trailer to: Carry out a final maintenance check before setting off – particularly if it has been left over the winter. Pay particular attention to the condition and pressure of the tyres on both the towed and towing vehicle. Check that loads in the towed and towing vehicle are

secure, that the weight is evenly distributed and is not excessive. Be aware of how towing affects the vehicle’s performance – particularly braking distances. Use extended mirrors when towing wider trailers, such as caravans, to ensure clear and legal visibility of the trailer and of other vehicles on the road. Check they have an appropriate driving licence for the vehicle and trailer combination.

Know the correct speed limit for the vehicle and roads make sure they have proper breakdown cover in place. Drivers towing boats in particular should take care to keep the hubs of their trailers out of cold water, as this can stop the grease

working and lead to failed bearings. The Agency works closely with the Caravan Club, the Camping and Caravanning Club and the British Horse Society to promote safety messages to people who tow vehicles and trailers.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

I’ve gone back to my younger years this week, with a trip to a couple of the tiniest of nearby rivers in search of wild brown trout, perch, chub or pike. I grew up near the River Hamps, a small river with some plump brown trout which were relatively easy to find with a big fat lobworm suspended beneath a brightly flecked perch bobber as it twirled downstream. In the years I fished it, I began to truly ‘learn’ the river to a point where I knew which rock sheltered small trout, which roots harboured bigger, and could hazard a guess about just where the fish would be in a variety of conditions. My watercraft on the Hamps meant I could spend an hour down there and return with a brace of chubby fish for the table, so I wondered if I still had the knack when I returned this week. One of my favourite swims was the Green Bridge; a series of deep pools punctuated by riffling shallows which used to hold at least three fish. The weather conditions haven’t been kind to the rivers, a lack of rain has seen levels plummet and waters clear, so the requirement for stealth and concealment became paramount or the fish would spook at the merest hint of a shadow... I’d selected an Ecogear Paramax lure to be fished dropshot style with a single split shot to provide the casting weight needed to achieve an underarm flick to the far bank.

The lure itself is a small soft plastic with an extremely flexible tail and is bright pink; a colour I’m having consistent success on at the moment. As I slid down the bank, I could see small trout rising to gratefully accept flies drifting by on the flow, so I kept low and flicked the lure to the far side; halfway back, and the rod tip gave the familiar thud as a trout hit the lure! First cast and I was into a fish! Somewhat smug, I tried to guide the trout to hand, but suddenly lost it as it leapt from the water and spat the hook out and plunged back into the clear water... The river was so low (in fact just thirty yards downstream, it disappeared below ground into the limestone caverns below the Peak District) that I was only going to get one chance in each swim, so I moved upstream to another banker spot. The lure fluttered down against a submerged rock, and even before I tightened the braid, it had been taken by a slightly bigger trout which charged across the flow. Once again, this one threw the hook in disgust and returned to its position in the middle of the river where it instantly turned away if I got too close; another chance wasted. I moved back to the original swim in the hope that the fish had returned to feed and after casting out, proceeded to lose yet another fish; three in three casts! Despite not catching anything, I’d enjoyed myself immensely, spending an hour by a river I remembered well from years

before and finding myself able to locate the fish, even if I couldn’t catch them! A second visit to a tiny venue saw me at the River Churnet, an equally small river, but populated with perch, pike and chub which would hopefully express some interest in my Paramax lure. This kind of fishing is up close and intimate; it may only require the lure to be swung out and dropped into a deep hole, the rod tip amongst the overhanging trees, or twitched along the reeds under your feet, but it’s great fun! After just my second cast, a flash behind the lure revealed a small perch which struck the lure with intent and was soon bought to hand and returned. A handful of perch followed as I wandered the meandering stream, each as pristine as the last, and each as gratefully received. I found them in dark cutouts below my feet, tucked under flotsam rafts, and at the edge of the almost imperceptible creases in the flow, but every one had to be winkled out delicately as I explored the river. Another hour soon passed and I reached the end of my beat and so returned to the van. I’d completed two sessions actively targeting small fish on small rivers for just a few short hours, and I’d loved every minute of it! The Ecogear range of lures offers something for all situations and a small pink thing had given me hours of fun...read into that what you will, but you really should give them a try!

MILLERS SHIP OWLS LAND BLADES GO FOR A BURTON FIVE AT QOS IN SLOVENIA Nigel Clough was understandably in reflective mood following Saturday’s preseason friendly loss at Burton Albion, but was not too downhearted as his squad got their first serious outing of the season. A poor first-half showing saw the Blades trailed 3-0 at the interval and despite a spirited second 45 minutes as the Blades replaced the whole team, it ended 4-0 to the Brewers, beaten in last season’s League Two play-off final, at the Pirelli Stadium. Looking back the Gaffer remarked: “Burton were better opposition than we would have probably wished for first time out, full credit to them, but our performance showed we are still in the very early days of pre-season. We wanted to split the sides up evenly for both halves, but arguably the second-half team was stronger.” “We looked rusty in the first-half and Burton on the back of a game or two already were just quicker and sharper and took their chances. We wanted more than what we showed in the firsthalf and we acquitted ourselves much better as the game progressed.” Clough reserved a special mention for a handful of players, adding: “Diego (De Girolamo) looked sharp as did Jose (Baxter) and Harrison McGahey was very good alongside Harry (Maguire). Chris Basham settled in well and looked strong and Craig Alcock was as impressive as anyone else in his performance.”

Assistant Manager Paul Raynor praised the first half performance of his young side despite a flurry of late goals against Queen of the South this afternoon. The Millers were defeated 5-1 but lead for over 40 minutes at Parmeston Park before being undone in the final quarter of the game. “I think we came up against a well drilled and very good side today,” he told www.themillers. co.uk “At times we moved the ball very well. I was particularly pleased with the first half performance and pleased to see us get an early goal. It was a young side out there but I thought the first period although we were slightly hemmed in at times, we broke well and looked threatening on the counter attack. The goals we conceded were individual mistakes, they were all preventable, these young players will learn that.” Raynor also reiterated the reason for the young team after the Millers opted to look after the first-team squad with some players nursing knocks from the game at Falkirk. “We had a game in the 3G at Falkirk last night and speaking with the medical team and Paul Warne we just felt another game given the niggles we have picked up wouldn’t have been beneficial,” he added. “We have been training very hard and there are some very big games to come, as much as we would have liked to put a strong side out, we had edge on the side of caution with the long term aim of the match against Derby County in August.”

The Blades have lined-up a night to remember to celebrate their 125th birthday. Set to be the hottest ticket in town, a special party, dinner and show will see great Sheffield United players from most eras, former managers, the current playing squad and management team plus special guests making surprise appearances. On the night and before the event supporters will have the opportunity to vote in some of award categories. The event will reveal: - The greatest Blades players of all time - there will be a countdown from 20 to 1 on the night which is expected to include for the first time in 30 years the reunion of legends such as Alan Woodward, Tony Currie and Eddie Colquhoun synonymous with the Blades anthem “We ain’t got a barrel of money” - The greatest Blades manager - a number of former bosses are lined-up to appear - The greatest Blades team of all time - the choice will be from four classic United lineups - The greatest Blades fan ever There will also be a number of special awards at the event, to be hosted by the BBC’s Harry Gration and Sky’s Charlie Webster, which will be held on Saturday 27th September at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre before

an audience of hundreds. The date coincides with that of the Club’s first ever home game in 1889. Sheffield United Managing Director Mal Brannigan said: “This will be a unique occasion to celebrate 125 years of Sheffield United. Fans will be able to meet former players and managers as well as Nigel Clough, his management team plus the current squad. “It will be unmissable, we are expecting to sell-out. There will be surprise special appearances from some of our celebrity fans, a fantastic dinner and top entertainment. A unique feature will be that fans at the event on the night will be able to help decide the winners of some of the award categories by an inter-active voting system,” added Mal. The event will feature a drinks reception, four course dinner, entertainment, an after show party, live music and a mini casino. Tickets start from £60 and tables of 10 cost £500 (plus VAT). GOALS ARE MY GOAL Putting in the hard yards on the training ground will lead to profits on the pitch – that is the mantra of Gary Madine as the new campaign draws ever closer. The Wednesday striker is enjoying the team’s pre-season camp, with the slog under the Slovenian sun paying dividends. And Madine is fully focused on building up the fitness as he looks towards the Championship curtain raiser against Brighton later this month. He said: “It’s hard graft but I’m enjoying it, we all are, because we know the work has to be done. “I am hungry to play and hungry for goals. “I want the chance to play and I can only do that if I am 100 per cent fit and 100 per cent sharp. “With that base, hopefully the games will come and the goals will follow.”

In temperatures approaching the 90s, the Owls landed safely in Slovenia on Saturday afternoon. Head coach Stuart Gray has said at this stage of pre-season the main focus is to build up fitness in preparation for the rigours of Championship football. While the Owls are being put through their paces during the five-day training camp in Slovenia, Gray’s side will face Russian top flight side FC Arsenal Tula on Wednesday. Tula’s season is set to kick off one week before the Owls’ opening fixture with Brighton and the Russian side face a tough introduction to life in the Premier League following their promotion last season. Champions League qualifiers Zenit St Petersburg await on day one, followed by Europa League side Lokomotiv Moscow and Gray expects a stern challenge to conclude the European trip. He said: “At this moment in time, it’s all about getting the fitness in the legs with the running and hard graft that is required in pre-season. We’ve made a good start over here, training has been sharp and that’s how it has to be. It will be a good test for us against Arsenal Tula. Their season begins before ours so they are further into their pre-season programme than we are, so they’ll have that fitness.” Tula’s training pitch is in close proximity to the Owls’ facility - an adjacent field that overlooks the Russian side’s base in Maribor. “I’m certain it will be a physical test for us,” Gray continued. “We have watched them in training and saw them play a game earlier in the week and they will be a handful.”

ROVERS - TERRY SPEAKS OUT It came as a shock to everyone connected with Rovers when the news broke last week that the Football League were not prepared to sanction the planned takeover by Jonh Ryan and Louis Tomlinson. However the Board have been quick to allay fears over the immediate future of the club, and Terry Bramall has confirmed his desire to stay at Doncaster Rovers. “It was with reluctance we agreed to the takeover simply because we have been pleased with the journey the club has made since our time as owners both on and off the field. However John and Louis both have a clear passion for the club and we did not want to stand in their way. Our primary motive throughout the negotiations has been to secure the future of Doncaster Rovers and to ensure the club is in a position to thrive both on and off the field whilst protecting the future of all staff. Hence why we agreed to write off our loans to the club as part of the proposed takeover agreement.” “Whilst we did not expect to be in this position, the opportunity that has presented itself is one that is welcomed with a positive attitude. We are looking forward to working with Paul Dickov, Gavin Baldwin and the rest of the senior management team and they of course will have our full support. “We appreciate the difficult situation Paul has found himself in through no fault of his own. The delay in transfer activity has of course had short term impact on our season preparations but we are hopeful as a board we can support Paul with a playing budget that allows him to achieve all of our ambitions for a return to the Championship.”
