Copley’s Column

This is the penultimate writing of this column, and I am pleased to report on some excellent entertainment I have been privileged to see this week. On Tuesday, I attended Russ Dennett’s open mic for the launch at its new home, JDs music lounge. Although I really miss the company of Andy and Cath at the Yew Tree, some compensation is that the new venue is within walking distance of my home, with the resultant saving of the taxi fare home. The future of live music is vital and I was heartened to see at very young band, Absolute Beginners, on stage at open mic. I have to say they were exceptional, with a great bass player, only twelve years young. This is the future of live music and nice to see it encouraged. Thursday night, is music night at the Victoria and this week saw the return of one of my favourite artistes, Vincent, who was his usual excellent self, performing many of his own compositions. On Friday night, I was spoilt for choice with John Alex at the Hub, Dronfield and Agnetha and Frida at Viva Tequila, both brilliant entertainers. I was swerved to Viva Tequila by two guest tickets from my good friend Diana Edwards. The whole evening was a total success, with a first class hot buffet and Diana and Sarah on top form. I am in awe and admiration of these girls who having performed the previous night in Barcelona, flew back to do an afternoon show in Aylesbury before performing at Viva Tequila, who always put on a great cabaret evening. The Paul Dungworth Charity event took place on Saturday and I was regrettably otherwise engaged. A lot of hard work goes into organising this event and I was sorry having to miss out. I am however grateful for a video clip of four of my pals performing a Village People tribute which I have to say was amazing. I have always seen this column as a vehicle to advertise and promote worthy charities, and I feel compelled to further remind readers, having mentioned it a few weeks ago, of Dronfest (Rhythm & Boots) on Sunday 3rd August from noon to 11.00 p.m. which raises money for St.

I was nervous starting my new job as a street cleaner yesterday. Luckily I picked things up straight away. Me and my friends have been playing the ‘Parliamentary Drinking Game’ recently. Basically, you watch Question Time and down a drink every time an MP tells the truth. I’m 5 years sober and bored out my mind. When I was working at Tesco today, a customer was being rude to me, so I scanned him in the eyes with the barcode reader. You should have seen the look on his face, it was priceless. Was at the top of the Empire State building when I saw a very attactive girl, so I leaned in and whispered, “Baby I wanna make all your fantasies come true.” She turned to me and whispered back, “Awww that’s so sweet. Try not to land on my car....” A police officer on traffic duty flags down a car. “Sir, you appear to have 12 penguins in the back of your car.” “That’s right, officer, I do.” “Well that’s ridiculous – take them to the zoo straight away.” “OK officer.” And the car drives off. Next day, the same policeman in the same spot sees the same car drive past – with the penguins in the back. He flags him down again. “I thought I told you to take them to the zoo…” “Yes, officer, and it was great – today I’m taking them to the cinema.” I just saw a bloke driving a tractor and shouting “THE END IS NIGH!” I think it was Farmer Geddon. LIBRARIES ON TRACK TO STAY OPEN YOUNG DEMENTIA UK SURVEY REQUEST All libraries in Sheffield are set to stay open as the Council announces it has approved plans from groups to run branches from the end of September. Groups were invited to submit business plans for 15 libraries after the Government cut 50% of funding to the Council, which has forced £240 million of savings requiring £1.67 million from the libraries budget over the next two years, which means the Council cannot afford to continue running them all. The Council reveals today that the libraries are set to stay open as business plans have now been approved for 13 libraries. Two groups submitted business plans for Walkley Library, both meeting the required standard. Therefore discussions with them are ongoing and Burngreave Library has been granted an extension. With the Council continuing to run the Central Lending Library and 11 hub libraries across the city, and Tinsley remaining under Council control for the next two years, all 28 libraries across the city look set to remain open. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Health, said: “I’m delighted to announce today that all of our libraries are on track to remain open and would like to thank the groups for their fantastic efforts. The business plans put forward set out a viable future for the libraries and we will support them by funding building running costs, providing access to the Council’s library catalogue and computer service, helping train volunteers and providing ongoing advice and support. As I have said many times, we want to keep as many libraries open as possible. We wouldn’t be making these changes if we didn’t have to but Government cuts are impacting on every service the Council provides and we are no longer able to run all of the libraries as we were before. This is why some of them will now be community run libraries. The response we’ve had from the community has been great and clearly demonstrates the commitment we share to keeping the libraries open.” The Council will maintain the library buildings and associated costs for five Codelivered libraries which will be staffed by volunteers, with up to 15 hours of

Ten Associate libraries will be staffed and maintained by volunteers with the Council providing up to £262,000 support per year for up to three years to help them get established and make sure they can pay the running costs of the building, such as heating and lighting. Associate libraries will also be able to access the Council’s library catalogue and computers. Volunteers will be given training and ongoing support to help them become sustainable into the future. Kathryn Taylor, Project Manager for the Woodhouse & District Community Forum, said: “I’m so pleased with the outcome of the business case review, for us and for all the volunteers. “The next step is to look at the transition to when we take control of the library. Our aim is to provide the same level of service which Woodhouse has always had, and then to look at what else we can do. As a community group, we’re able to access different funding and we want to make more of the library space and the activities we have planned. We want to provide something for all ages in Woodhouse. We’re looking at whether we could have a crèche type service so parents are able to have the time to choose books they’d really like to borrow, rather than get the ﬁrst one they pick up. We’re also looking at drama workshops for young people, adult education and crafts and friendship groups for older people. Of course, all of this will need planning and timetabling in but we’re working really hard at providing something for all ages in Woodhouse.” STAND (Stannington and District Library Group) spokesman Bob Mynors said: “We’ve done a huge amount of work to get to this point and are really pleased our plans have been approved. “We’ve got a big job to do between now and the end of September so everyone is busy working towards this. The Council is providing training to volunteers who will be public facing and we will cascade this to all our volunteers. We’re also fundraising and will be establishing ourselves as a charity. “We want to let everyone know who we are and that the library is staying open. There is a lot of goodwill towards the library in Stannington. We think it is right to keep it open and that there are enough people to use it. “We want to make sure things run smoothly from the ﬁrst morning we open. Longer term now we’ve got the library we will also be thinking what else we can do with it. It’s a convenient and really accessible building and we want to make the most of it.” Groups are on track to take responsibility for the Co-delivered and Associate libraries from the end of September.

PING! BOUNCES BACK INTO SHEFFIELD FOR SUMMER! Paralympic table tennis silver medallist Will Bayley tries out a Ping! table in Sheffield city centre.A popular sporting initiative offering members of the public the chance to play table tennis for free in unusual outdoor locations has returned to Sheffield for the summer. Ping! has made a comeback in the city for the fourth year running with 28 tables installed at venues across Sheffield until the end of August. These include Darnall Baptist Church, iceSheffield, Action for Stannington,

Firth Park, Ellesmere Green Community Group, Endcliffe Park, Sheffield Hallam University and Ponds Forge International Sports Centre. Sheffield is one of 16 places in England chosen to host the Sport England ping pong project, delivered locally by South Yorkshire Sport. Jodie Bridger, development manager at South Yorkshire Sport, said: “It’s fantastic to see Ping! back in Sheffield with table tennis tables rolled out in a host of weird and wonderful outdoor locations. “Almost 400,000 people took part in Ping! in 2013, which just goes to show there is a real appetite for the sport. Ping! makes it so simple to play. You just need to pick up a bat and get involved!” As part of the project, a number of master-classes and tournaments will also take place this summer.

BBC INTRODUCING STAGE ANNOUNCED LEEDS 2014

With less than a month to go until the gates open, the countdown is now well and truly on for Reading & Leeds 2014. Returning this year will be the one stop home of the best in up and coming talent, the BBC Introducing Stage. With the BBC forever championing the finest in new music from the UK and beyond, the stage is once again packed to the brim with the hottest acts of the future. As a powerful launching platform for emerging talent the stage has previously been home to Jake Bugg as well as Catfish And The Bottlemen, Spector, Clock Opera and many more. Topping the bill on Saturday at Leeds will be the extremely exciting BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra championed London soul singer Moko. Joining her will be alternative punk project The Bulletproof Bomb, Kent experimental rock group Broken Hands, the ambient neo-soul singing collective Lyves, 19-year-old folk-pop singer Rebecca Clements, the blues tinged and Tom Waits influenced sounds of John J Presley, the fiercely executed rap and powerfully emotive, catchy vocal melodies of Judge and The Jury, melancholic indie quintet Dancing Years, Buckinghamshire singer/songwriter Natasha North, fierce Scottish post hardcore band Shambles In A Husk and the honest, gritty rap and soul of Tom Prior. Heading up the lineup on Sunday at Leeds is the delicate vocal of Bombay Bicycle Club collaborator Rae Morris. The thrilling and hotly tipped London slacker rock trio Happyness will join her alongside Canadian indie pop group Hello Operator, exGeneral Fiasco brothers Owen and Enda Strathern’s new band Oh Volcano, three piece Leicester music makers Juniors, upcoming songwriter and Enigma Dubz collaborator Lippi, the melodious pop of Liverpool’s Guardian championed trio All We Are, France formed Aussie and Brit four piece indie rockers Sunset Sons, the horror-influenced skatepunk of Cambridge four piece Bloody Knees and the infectious punk pop of Brixton’s Love Zombies. Friday at Leeds sees the stage headlined by Scottish synth-pop trio and Island signees Prides who will come to the festival fresh from playing the Blink 182 Reading & Leeds warm-up shows at Brixton Academy. This year saw the return of the prestigious Futuresound Competition, offering the winner the chance to perform on the Festival Republic Stage and five runners up the chance to open over on the BBC Introducing Stage. Leeds’ piano bashing, rock n roll five piece Carnabells came in on top for what is sure to be the opportunity of a lifetime over on the Festival Republic Stage. The Saturday at Leeds sees self-proclaimed ‘Black Keys meets Nancy Sinatra’ trio Crybabycry open the stage. Saturday at Reading and Sunday at Leeds sees the post punk and pop of Tabloids and Forever Cult’s slow burning grunge kicking off festivities. Sunday at Reading and Friday at Leeds, West Yorkshire alternative five piece Allusondrugs and the mod sounds of Leeds’Vendettas will be opening the stage. Centre Stage 2014 winners GirlsOnDrugs have also been added to the bill. Acollaboration between a boy and girl, the band have deep bass synths and dreamlaced chords enlivened by the beautiful, sultry, vocal talents of Kat McHugh, whose voice dances from pure expression to melancholic yearning. The BBC Introducing Stage is truly the best place at the Festival to see the finest in small bands on the rise. All this and a few very special, secret guests can be expected during what promises to be the biggest weekend in this summer’s festival calendar! What do you get when you combine a bloody awesome line-up, the best weather of the year and copious amounts of lager? Guilfest 2014 of course! With over 7 stages within the grounds of Guilfest park, stage dives, circle pits and lots (and lots) of beards were on the cards for summer’s killer live event. What is undeniably refreshing about Guilfest is their central mantra behind platforming bands. Whether it be local level groups or bands who have performed throughout the international rock circuit, this was once again witnessed within the three day spectacle. Kicking Friday’s processions off, The Darling Buds. Drawing in their stary-eyed fan base, lead vocalist Jamie Campbell Bower proved effortlessly comfortable producing emotionally riddled live hits. Canterbury yet again delivered huge within their forty minute set, with tracks ‘Satellite,’ ‘Expensive Imitation’ and ‘Think It Over’ firmly landing them as festival favourites, however the night was not complete without The Blackout. From hurtling himself into the crowd to raising adrenaline to sky high levels, Sean Smith performs every show like it is his last…and hell did we need a stiff drink after that! To day two…after stocking up on mosh fuel (chips at 10am is totally acceptable right?) we were set to tantalise our ear drums with plenty more Guilfest action. Alt-rock five piece Lit Like Vegas stormed the Big Cheese Stage with their trademark brute force whilst Heart Of A Coward delivered bang on point with their gritty take on metal. Serving up a selection of hits from their most recent album ‘Severance,’ it’s impossible to question the passion and determination the five piece throw into their performances. Black Futures spat out emotively dirty punk lyrics however Arcane Roots flipped the coin to deliver an anthemic set full of touching melodies, crafted rhythmic sections and on-point harmonies to succumb to the set of the festival so far. It’s always a sad time when it dawns on you that drinking cider before 11am is totally socially unacceptable but hey, the final day of a festival always has to happen. Local pack The Afterparty spiced the day’s events up with ridiculously catchy rock tracks followed by Gnarwolves, a duo with so much potential we can almost see it weeping out their pours. Itch threw a curve ball into proceedings with his alternative take on rap rock, however the set of the weekend goes to Feed The Rhino. Having recently performed at the mighty Download Festival, the hardcore clan delivered the exact same level of determination on the Big cheese stage. Genuine thanks runs through each and every members bones, their performance showed their spectators how grateful they are for the support they are receiving. Energy levels at top notch highs, Lee Tobin and co well and truly stamped their Rhino mark right into the soul of Guilfest…

THIS WEEKEND

In its 9th year, Kendal Calling is fast becoming one of the “must go to” festivals. Having won Best Small Festival in 2010 and 2011, it’s now been voted the best Medium Size Festival of 2013 in the UK festival awards, beating off such stiff competition as Latitude, Greenman and Camp Bestival, and it’s quite easy to see why. Set in the beautiful Lowther Deer Park in the heart of the Lake District it has grown from 900 capacity to 13,000! Boasting a melting pot of live music spanning every conceivable genre, from huge internally renowned artists, under the radar bands and local talent on it’s nine stages. With a line-up as impressive as this year’s then, it’s no surprise it has sold out in advance and from top to bottom of the bill, it’s looking utterly magnificent. The headliners of Suede, Frank Turner and Example are a perfect mix of festival headliners, offering everything from full sing-along anthems to down right party songs. But it’s not just the headliners that have the crowd flocking to Kendal. Some of the UK’s most popular turntablists are showcasing at Kendal with the likes of 2manydjs and Andy C who are bound to draw massive crowds and get them partying in the fields till the early hours of the morning. The Hip Hop Legends slot this year is filled by De La Soul on the back of their very impressive set on the pyramid stage at Glastonbury. The massively influential hip hop group hailing from Amityville, New York, best known for their eclectic sampling and quirky, surreal lyrics are bound to be one of the highlights of the festival with their nonstop energy. The classic hits are bound to get the best response from the crowd, especially 'Buddy', 'Me Myself and I', and 'Oooh'. But their new material is solid and should go down just as well with the Kendal crowd. Headliners are great for the late night festival vibe, but it’s not all about stadium bands. This year sees the return of the “Calling Out” stage. This area aims to highlight some of the talent of tomorrow, which will leave the crowds walking away with a new Spotify playlist. It’s not just the music that the crowds will be enjoying at Kendal though, there is plenty of other things to keep them entertained from performance art to the late night cinema situated in The Calling Out area. There is plenty on offer for the kids too, which makes the festival such a big hit with families. From the Ladybirds children’s area to the Toddlers Tent, there are countless activities for families to get involved with, including puppet-making for the space carnival. These areas also offer comfy sofas and picnicking facilities, providing the option to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the festival. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity Weekly Feature

Housekeeper David Drabble has worked at Weston Park Hospital for over two years, playing a vital role in ensuring that the patients who are receiving chemotherapy treatments on the Day Case Unit are as comfortable and content as possible. David’s work is funded by Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and includes providing refreshments and food for patients, along with keeping morale as high as possible during what are sometimes lengthy visits. “My role on the Day Case Unit is to ensure the patients are well looked after and treated as individuals in a busy and often unfamiliar environment. “It is surprising what a brief chat or a hot drink can do to lift a patient’s spirits, and whilst I can continue

to offer some light relief for the cancer patients in our hospital, then I believe there will always be a need for my role.”

Although ex-joiner and self-confessed family man David has only worked at the hospital for two years, he is very aware of the vital part it plays in caring for cancer patients across the region.

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support worldclass cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer.

Throughout 2014, the charity is marking its 20th anniversary by funding a wide variety of projects for the hospital including staff posts, “Over twenty years ago I was the completion of the new diagnosed with testicular Clinical Research Unit and the cancer and treated at Weston Day Case Unit refurbishment. Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

After walking around a potentially exciting free to ﬁsh lake last week, I was looking forward to trying to winkle out a carp or two, and duly turned up at the park gates at 05:50 ready for the promised 0600 opening time. It wasn’t to be. After sitting patiently for 90 minutes, a passerby explained that things had changed and that the park would allow vehicle access from 0900. I wasn’t going to wait, so drove over to another venue to try and make up for lost time! Moral of that story…do your homework to avoid wasting the best part of the day! I was under instructions to obtain some relevant images to promote a particular product from the Marukyu range in which I hold great faith, so set out to photograph a variety of shots to show how the Credence Marine liquid could be used to boost baits and provide extra attraction. A huge part of my angling now is to provide images for a number of ‘hard copy’ and online clients, so I’m usually under pressure to catch something and provide evidence too. Luckily, I enjoy my angling and photography, but combining the two can sometimes be stressful! The Credence Marine liquid is a super sticky, extremely potent liquid additive

which only needs a tiny amount to make a huge difference. I can’t tell you exactly what is in it, (I’d have to kill you!) but suffice to say, the salty, fishy fluid works, and it works well, but blistering hot weather coupled with cloudless skies meant that catching for the camera was going to be difficult... The carp in the lake hadn’t given me many clues as to their whereabouts, and it took almost an hour before I settled into the one area I’d seen a couple of fish. The weather was predicted to get even warmer, so I was happy to rig up a light floater set up to target the carp which run to around 20lbs, and try and pinch a fish or two off the top. So, how does Credence Marine liquid help with my surface tactics? Everyone has their own way of floater fishing, each has their preferred method of mounting the bait, but I like to keep things simple and just glue a mixer or pop up to the shank of a small wide gape hook. It’s easy to do, I don’t have to mess about with bait bands or hair rigs, and I know the hook will contact the mouth of any curious carp. I always make up a small pva mesh bag of mixers, add a little of the Credence Marine liquid and allow it to stand until sticky; if required, I can even roll the bags in a powder additive to provide even more scent in the water, before nicking the hook through the mesh and casting out. This guarantees a mess of smelly mixers around

the hook bait, and is a great way to get some bait out without the birds noticing! If the fish are extremely wary, and don’t like the controller float, I’ve also used this pva tactic to offer an even easier approach; simply tie a hook on to your mainline, glue on a bright pop up, then make up a pva bag, but add a small stone from the bankside and nick the hook point into it. The stone gives enough casting weight to get the hookbait out to feeding fish, it will sink the bag for the few seconds required to avoid the birds, then once the mesh melts, the whole lot floats to the surface! The bright hookbait will be easily visible amongst the freebies, so you know exactly which one you need to watch! Having decided on my approach, I made up a number of Credence Marine treated pva bags, attached my hook bait, and cast out towards fish which I could see cruising just below the surface. After a couple of very near misses, a rubbery pair of lips slurped in my bait and I was soon playing a fish to the waiting net. I didn’t weigh this one, estimating it as a low double, but it proved the effectiveness of both the additive and my tactics, especially as no other fish were caught by anyone else whilst I was there...very satisfying! Be warned, a drop or two of Marukyu Credence Marine may result in you catching more fish than you thought possible!
