Copley’s Column

This report is my final contribution after having written reviews for my beloved Mercury for the past fifteen years. I have during this time met and befriended many people, some famous and some not so. There have been many who are no longer with us, many of whom were taken long before their time, and I should like to give some of them a mention here to keep their memory alive. Two particularly close friends no longer with us are Barrie Sansby, landlord of the Mason’s Arms on Langsett Road and the Old Grindstone at Crookes. Barrie was one of life’s great characters with whom I had endless fun, particularly on golf weekends away and I miss him dearly. I should also like to give a mention to the best man at my first wedding, many years go, Jimmy Stocks, retired bookmaker and fearless gambler, a great friend who I keep in touch with until he sadly passed away recently. It is no secret that celebrity breakfast on Thursday mornings at the Chantry Hotel is the highlight of my week. We are a close group and have sadly lost some of our members. Paul Shane, or George Speight as he preferred to be known, with whom I had a close affinity sadly passed away in May of last year. The large number of people who attended his funeral bore testimony to this great man. Breakfast regular and very funny man Bobby Knutt sadly lost Donna, the love of his life, suddenly last year, which was a great shock. More recently, this April, we lost one of life’s beautiful ladies, comedienne Jill Alex, who finally succumbed to cancer. Another great friend, sadly with us no more, was Mercury head salesman, Stephen Thompson who worked right up to his death aged seventy eight. We also lost Dave Peckett, affectionately known as Santa’s little helper, who was a giant of a man despite his small stature and Mick Emmens, former landlord of the Yellow Lion, Apperknowle and ex mayor of Dronfield who devoted his life to helping others. I should also like to preserve the memory of my friend and next door neighbour, Ron Alderson, who passed away after a short illness. I have annually remembered my pal, author and gravelly voiced announcer on Radio Hallam, Fred Pass, another of life’s characters. Closer to home, I would like to show respect

to my third wife Jill, mother to my twins, sadly taken too early and my ex girlfriend, Jane Hamre, who succumbed to cancer aged fifty six. And not forgetting Geoff Allen and Steve Cardwell, who also will be sadly missed. I apologise if this final offering appears to be filled with doom and gloom, but I am using this report as a vehicle to keep the memory of friends and loved ones alive. This is the end of an era, when I have plied my trade under three different owners of the paper, founder Phil Booker, David Hayes and present owner Glenn Wood. I have maintained a good professional relationship with my editor and friend Andrew Platts, and would thank all my readers who have sent no hate mail during my past fourteen years. Goodbye and God Bless.

I went to the library and asked for a book about tortoises. “It’s over there,” said the Librarian, “In the Hard Back section.” Most people hate eavesdroppers, or so I hear. As my girlfriend walked out on me earlier, she shouted: “You look like a fool with your hair combed to the side.” It was a cruel parting comment. When the inventor of the USB stick dies they’ll gently lower the coffin, then pull it back up, turn it the other way, then lower it again. You can’t rush a good sun tan. It won’t happen overnight. My wife left me because I take everything I hear too literally. Oh well, as the old saying goes, there’s plenty more fish in the sea. That’s why I’ve bought this new fishing boat. My sister came over last night and started nagging me about the cleanliness of my house. I sent her away with a flea in her ear. A researcher asked me how old I was on my last birthday. “I don’t know,” I said. “ I haven’t died yet.” I went for a job as a toilet attendant. In the interview the boss told me to grab a stool. I didn’t get the job. I spent ages trying to cross a busy road. Some passer-by said, “There’s a zebra crossing fifty yards up the road.” I thought, “I hope he’s having better luck than me.” My secretary just entered my office and said: ‘We got a letter again from our office in the Sahara. They’re writing that they have a very serious water shortage’ ‘Well’, I said, ‘there’s always a water shortage there - it can’t be that urgent’ ‘I think it’s urgent this time’, my secretary said, ‘the stamp is put on the envelope with a paperclip...’ I had an oddjob man in to help me do some work around the house. I gave him a list of 10 things to do. He only did numbers 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. Did you hear about the man who opened a yacht showroom? Sales went through the roof.

As performers and staff prepare to bring the newest version of their famous show on a return visit to Sheffield, Zippo's Circus is honoured and proud to include the Rastelli clowns in our 2014 production. Zippo’s Circus will perform at Endcliffe Park, Ecclesall Rd., Sheffield S11 7AB from Wednesday 13th to Monday 18th August with a brilliant brandnew 2014 production titled ‘Unchained’. The show stars globally-renowned clowns the Rastellis and features equestrian princess Summer with her beautiful horses, as well as Guinness World Recordholding strong man Hercules and the Tropicana Troupe of flying acrobats from Cuba. The Rastellis are circus 'aristocracy' whose pedigree and fame go back many generations. The family's first appearance in Britain was in the winter of 1929/30, when the grandfather of the current generation brought his troupe to appear in a Christmas season at the Crystal Palace Grand Continental Circus in London. SUMMER GRANT SCHEME LAUNCHED The top priorities in the Commissioner’s Police and Crime Plan will determine the next round of successful grant recipients as the summer grant scheme is launched. On Friday 1st August Shaun Wright launched his summer grant scheme of which non-profit organisations are encouraged to apply for funding of up to £10,000. Applications are encouraged from groups providing activities in South Yorkshire that will compliment and work towards reducing antisocial behaviour, protecting the most vulnerable people, improving visible policing, prevent reoffending and ensure victims and witnesses get a better deal. All activities must be specific and targeted at areas and groups most likely to benefit from the provision. Shaun Wright the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner said: “This round of grant funding is aimed at targeting the concerns of residents in South Yorkshire. My priorities are based on issues they have told me about and I am keen to channel resources towards making more of a difference to local communities. I welcome applications from organisations providing diversionary activities for young people specifically where antisocial behaviour is taking place. I would like to see submissions

SPECIAL FOOD FEATURE - THE BELFRY

Spotlight On

THE BELFRY Eckington Road | Sheffield | S20 1EQ Telephone: 0114 321 4377 This was our first visit to the Belfry, based on Eckington Road in the Sothall area of Sheffield, and we were very much looking forward to it based on the very positive feedback we had heard previously. First impressions when driving up were positive – plenty of parking and a pleasant exterior – however given we were expecting a typical quiet Monday evening, we were surprised by how busy the pub seemed. Manager Gary Acey and his team have worked hard to make the Belfry a bit different from the “average” food pub – Gary himself was standing on the door to personally greet all his visitors, and booking is almost essential every evening of the week unless visitors are happy to wait for a table – a testament in itself to the reputation Gary has created for the restaurant. The interior is warm, welcoming and comfortable – the high beamed ceilings and warm décor create a really pleasant atmosphere, and we were shown to a nice table with plenty of space around – no feeling of being hemmed in or overcrowded, which is always nice. A unique touch in the Belfry is the offer of full table service – no need to queue at the bar with menu in hand, frantically trying to remember your table number here! All food and drink can be ordered at your table and throughout the evening it was noticeable that staffing levels were more than adequate to cope with the very busy evening service. And so to the main attraction – the food. We had originally been tempted to visit the Belfry by it’s regular steak offers. However once we glanced at the menu it became obvious we were going down a different road! The pub is part of the Flaming Grill chain, and the menu is both imaginative and creative – with a combination of regular classics, a wide selection of grills, and a section to which I was immediately drawn – the “Flaming Challenges.” These are not for the faint-hearted – a huge 24oz burger, a 32oz steak challenge, and the “Trash Can” – a frighteningly large mixed grill combination with ribs, chicken, burgers, chilli and side dishes. In addition to this, the menu offers a decent selection of salads and lighter snacks, and of course every Sunday the traditional roast is available with a choice of chicken, lamb steaks and roast beef. Our party chose a selection of starters – a garlic ciabatta with melted mozzarella, the Ultimate Sharer Platter consisting of the usual selection of nibbles and sides, and I bravely ordered the “Great Wings of Fire” – twenty four chicken wings coated in combinations of chilli, peri peri and the firecracker - a fiery, sweet but delicious bbq sauce. First impressions were very good – the food had obviously been cooked to order, and came out warm and fresh. My party happily polished off their selection, but I have to admit that with one eye on my main course, I did pass on a few of my wings! And so the main course – the presentation of food is excellent, with platters, skillets and plates unique to each selection and carefully chosen to enhance the visual appeal of the food – although the Belfry will happily serve the food on regular plates if requested. First up (chosen by one of the ladies in our party) was the 10oz Hanging Mixed Meat Kebab – a superb serving of tender and succulent chunks of chicken, beef, gammon and lamb meatballs served with wraps, salad and sweet chilli sauce. The meat was perfectly cooked and the accompanying sides complemented the dish perfectly. Our other lady chose the lamb rump steaks, served with more traditional sides. She had asked that the lamb be served very pink, and she pronounced it cooked to perfection, flavoured with a subtle garlic and rosemary marinade. And now the boys! With a touch of gentle

encouragement my friend had selected the “Flaming Challenge” burger – two 12oz patties, topped with two chicken breast fillets, bacon, chilli beef, cheese and onions – all accompanied by a huge portion of excellently cooked chunky chips! Motivated by the desire to get his name on “The Wall of Flame” – for those who have managed to empty the plate – he tackled the dish with enthusiasm –but as the record passed (currently standing at a staggering 6 minutes 32 seconds!) his pace slowed, and he admitted defeat with perhaps a quarter of the dish remaining. However, leaving aside the Challenge, it must be noted that the quality was excellent – juicy, top quality burgers, tender and moist chicken breasts, plenty of flavor without excessive heat from the chilli, and crisp tasty chips. That only leaves my own selection – the “Trash Can Challenge.” Tempted by the description on the menu, the dish offered me a rack of ribs, a double cheese and bacon burger, a chicken skewer, a huge chilli beef sundae (served in a dessert glass!) and a selection of very large portions of side dishes. I was intrigued by the name – but all was explained when the dish arrived, served on a dustbin lid – literally. This dish is a real show-stopper – as the waitress made her way to the table, there were gasps and giggles from all our fellow diners as the “plate” passed by them. I was almost expecting a crowd to gather round as I made a start, and I quietly complimented myself on my foresight in not finishing all my starter. I have to say the food was delicious – a rack of ribs coated in just the right amount of sticky barbecue sauce, tender and falling off the bone. Juicy succulent burgers made from top quality beef, tender chicken and a really tasty chilli – everything was just right, freshly cooked and beautifully presented – but I was still eating long after my colleagues had finished, and indeed they assisted me by “sampling” the various dishes on my bin lid. Even between the four of us, we had to admit defeat with a fair amount still remaining. Imagine our surprise then when our ladies demanded a sweet! Admittedly they had chosen main courses of a more sensible nature, but the portions at the Belfry are very generous whatever you choose, and we were hoping to escape the pudding. Being sympathetic to our bursting stomachs, the ladies promptly selected the largest desserts on offer – the “Mountain of Sweet” – a huge sharing sundae with crunchie, profiteroles, cookie dough cheesecake, chocolate fudge cake amongst it contents – and the “Choc Chip Popping Pizza” – a cookie the size of a dinner plate with every conceivable variation of chocolate on top. Suffice it to say the quality matched everything we had enjoyed up to this point, and the girls demolished everything we left them. Overall we had an immensely enjoyable evening. Gary and the team have managed to take a pub chain offering and turn it into something special. From the greeting at the door, to the attentive table service from start to finish, front of house is excellent. Added to this the food comes out of the kitchen freshly prepared, beautifully presented and cooked as requested. There is a varied a carefully considered menu with something for everyone, and the special offers available give tremendous value for money – no wonder there is always a queue for tables whatever the day of the week. Added to this the pub now runs a Lunch Club – with daily special offers for diners.

A good night, and thoroughly recommended by this reviewer – this is a venue we shall visit again, although we may be slightly more modest in our menu choices simply for the sake of our waistline!

HANDSWORTH FESTIVAL CELEBRATES SUCCESS The Old Rectory Music Festival once again proved a great success with the people of Handsworth, as the weather looked kindly on our annual charity event. Almost six hundred people turned out to see fantastic tributes to Pink, Lady Gaga,

U2 and also the excellent Da Silva. The fabulous sunshine meant that families stayed with us all day, helping us to raise over £500 for good causes, with half the money being donated to "Help for Heroes". We were so encouraged by the

fantastic support that planning has already begun for next year's event! It will take place on July 26th 2015, and we have already added Thin Lizzy and Robbie Williams to the list of tribute acts. Watch the Mercury for ticket details!

THE GLORY OF THE SPITFIRE With remembrance events currently underway to commemorate World War One, it seems fitting that the legendary Spitfire which was used during World War Two will be undertaking a special flyover for the Epworth Agricultural Show this year on Monday 25th August. At 2.00pm the skies above Epworth Showground will play host to special display by the Spitfire in honour of the Epworth Show, demonstrating the greatness of this aircraft that played a major part in achieving victory during World War Two. The Mk1 Spitfire took to the skies to help defend Britain in August 1938, and they fought in every operational part of the war, and remained in RAF fontline service up to 1954. We are looking forward to the start of the football season this year as we will be broadcasting coverage of Rotherham United games. Commentaries of all The Millers home games throughout the season, starting with the Capital One Cup clash with Fleetwood Town on Tuesday evening, will be on Radio Nightingale. Hospital radio first began back in the 1920’s to bring football commentaries to patients and they were a regular feature on Radio Nightingale from the early 1990’s until five years ago. The club’s move to Don Valley Stadium brought additional technical challenges and costs that couldn’t be sustained but the intention was always to restart the commentaries from the New

Last Friday saw Yorkshire Day across God’s county, with many people celebrating the day with Yorkshire Pudding eating contests, Ferret Racing and the like. We are very lucky in Yorkshire to have just about everything, be it the rugged coastline, the Yorkshire Dales or the brilliant towns and cities with all sorts to offer. I was asked by a friend ‘What things make you proud about being from Yorkshire?’ and I have to be honest I found it really hard to answer this specifically. I mean Yorkshire folk are down to earth and in the main friendly/ welcoming, the scenery is wonderful with people visiting from all over the world, etc. Another person asked me ‘How did you celebrate Yorkshire Day?’ well apart from having a ‘potted dog with brown sauce York Stadium. New equipment and new volunteers in place, the 2014-15 season will see Radio Nightingale back broadcasting every Rotherham United FC home game. It’s great that we are back with RUFC, the commentaries were so popular amongst patients because being poorly is sometimes the only thing that keeps fans from the game. The Radio Nightingale commentary team welcomes a new face too, with local lad Joe Cawthorn set to make his debut on Tuesday. The Radio Nightingale Sports Show, presented by Sarah Gregory, will be on air from 7pm for Tuesday games and from 2pm on Saturdays. Music requests are welcome during the programme and can be emailed to Sarah at studio@radionightingale.org.uk. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw, Hospedia and online.

This week on the Magic AM Breakfast show we have a stack of prizes for you to try and win. The ‘Clip round t’ear’ is back tomorrow morning at 0720am. Just guess what the mystery sound is and you could win the lot!

PULLED APART BY HORSES

Interview By Kt Evans

“Pressure is always a good thing, it allows us to focus on what we all want to achieve.” Pulled Apart By Horses have well and truly landed right back on earth. After taking a two year hiatus from releasing any new material, the Leeds based alternative rock pack are returning with hot new release ‘Blood,’ alongside a string of festival appearances attached. We caught up with vocalist Tom Hudson to delve deep into their high profile return. Before we begin, it seems only fitting to give you a brief history of Pulled Apart By Horses. Forming back in 2008, the Northern based quartet smashed their way into the industry with debut self-titled album in 2010. This was proceeded by ‘Tough Love’ released in 2012 which flung them straight into the UK album charts, paving the way for a band who are now bang on top of their game. 1st September will see the group return with ‘Blood,’ their gigantic new release which sees the band take a dirty rock ‘n’ roll stance intertwined within recordings. “It’s been a long process, a lot longer than anything else that we have done,” reveals clean and screams vocalist Tom. “But it’s been worth it, all the time and effort has paid off in the end.” Having already released ‘Hot Squash’ and ‘Lizard Baby’ off the anticipated new album, it’s more than evident to witness how much Pulled Apart by Horses have stepped up their game. Don’t get us wrong, the group still retain the gritty rawness from past recordings, however ‘Blood’ marks a ‘matured’ sound…whether you want to believe it or not. “We’re still the same band and we still have that nasty sound but we don’t want to re-tread the same paths. We always want to keep doing something different and pushing ourselves. Because we’ve had more time with this album we’ve pushed it even further. If we would have recorded it straight after the other one then it could have been a bit of a different sound, but because we’ve had so much time to think about it and try songs out it’s just come out exactly how we want it to.” And by joe are they right. From moody hooks to heart racing rhythmic sections, ‘Blood’ takes us on a journey through the past two years of a group who have slaved away in the studio to produce their best work to date. The group from Leeds have broadened their horizons, they’ve spread their wigs and landed on something pretty damn spectacular. “When we were on this journey, we chopped and changed, chipped away at it so much. Then to recording it, it’s such a long process that you end up in love with a new song then all of a sudden you hate it, then you record it then you fall in love with it again. It’s on and off constantly. You get to a point where

SKA AT THE

TAVERN

you’re sick of hearing it so many times through recording and mixing. I got to the point where I left it for a bit and came back to it once it was mastered and finished. I’m proud of it!” But ultimately, what makes Pulled Apart By Horses that little bit different from the stacks of alternative rock bands out there today? What ensures fans are constantly waiting with baited breath for new tour dates, releases and festival appearances? The answer…personal identity. Way back in 2010, the group were producing hit after hit of sludgy rock songs, each blasting their way into the hearts and souls of fans. Rather than ignoring their roots and moving down a whole new avenue of genre shifting, the quartet however have remained true to themselves along with their fans. This is the beauty of Pulled Apart By Horses. “I think we have got more exaggerated parts, so the parts which we want to sound sleezier and nastier we have worked that into it way more. And parts we wanted really big drum sounds and more edge to it we have pushed it in that direction. We haven’t been afraid of going to the extremes.” So when and where can we catch a glimpse of the Northern enigma? The answer…Leeds and Reading Festival. Seizing main stage action on the August Bank holiday festival of the year, expect huge from a group who regard the event as part of their make-up. “We’re really stoked to be doing both Reading and Leeds 2014. We’ve played it almost every year since we’ve been a band. We feel like it’s a part of our band to play them even if we didn’t do anything else. That’s the one really!” But to the ultimate question…Reading or Leeds? Who wins?” I don’t know it’s really hard, we’ve had some amazing gigs at both. It’s like a different vibe. At reading, there’s more exposure, more press down there. Reading was the first one out the two, that’s got the history, you’ve got nirvana in 1992. But because we’re from Leeds, whenever we play there we always end up staying for the whole night or two days and hanging out with our friends…making a nuisance in the guest bar! We’ve been spoiled because we’ve been to both, but when I was younger I went to reading and Leeds because I was in the middle! The best of both!” Pulled Apart By Horses are back…and God are we excited for you to hear the new record. The dirties, grittiest rock ‘n’ roll release of the year, whatever your expectations are, raise them higher as this record will blow your socks off. Don’t believe us? Just you wait and see…

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

I’ve been in pursuit of tench again this week, that red eyed, slippy green enigma that I just can’t seem to stay away from! I have no idea why they seem to be one of my favourite fish, but I do enjoy fishing for them, so a trip into Cheshire was required... Lymmvale is a highly respected tench water, with a stock of fish that makes up roughly two thirds of the total biomass, and a venue where the tincas run to almost double figures. Early in the morning, as with many waters, the tench often show themselves by rolling in the dawn mist to give away their feeding position. After an hour of watching the water however, I was none the wiser as I hadn’t seen a single green fin, and chose to fish a peg offering deep water close in, some overhanging cover and into which a warm breeze was pushing, because it seemed to offer the most likely option. Lymmvale is a weedy water, and a little bit of power is often required to steer fish clear of the extensive Canadian pond weed and silkweed which can sometimes rise from the lake bed almost to the surface of the water, so it can be challenging. I like to use a pair of Sonik SK3 rods offering a 2lb test curve to ensure I have enough ‘grunt’ to manoeuvre fish away from any problems, and each was set up with a small match style method feeder. At the sharp end, a three inch hooklink terminated in a size twelve hook which was baited with hair rigged Strawberry Change Baits; a 10mm shelf life boilie from the Marukyu stable. I like them as they offer a very visual target, have lots of sweet attraction and are very handy to keep in the bottom of my tackle bag! The method feeders were loaded with the latest offering from Marukyu, a groundbait called Sweet Success which has a slightly toffee caramel scent to it and which the tench seem to love. Each feeder was loaded with a small amount of the Sweet Success and the hook bait buried within. This

particular groundbait, like the rest of the Marukyu groundbait range, is exceptionally easy to mix on the bank, requiring minimal water and even less fuss to produce a super sticky groundbait that adheres to the frame of the feeder. A cast to the edge of the overhanging tree just a few yards to my left found twelve feet of water, and the second feeder was propelled into open water to my front; the bobbins were set and the wait began... After around five minutes, I had a twitchy take on the marginal rod and promptly missed the resulting chance, so quickly rebaited and deposited it back on the spot before settling down again. The open water trap had still not registered any interest before a proper take on the left hand rod saw the tip curve away and as I lifted into the fish, I knew it was a tench and tried to stop it as it dived for cover! A short battle ended with a nice plump fish of around five pounds glistening in the folds of my net; a good start. After photographing the fish, it was safely returned and the bait recast. A short time later, a similar indication saw a similarly sized tinca returned and this continued for a couple of hours until I’d landed half a dozen good sized fish and missed a couple too! Unsurprisingly, as the sun rose higher, the number of bites decreased and then finally stopped as the tench stopped feeding and moved into deeper water. I’m always conscious that tench feed best during early morning or late evening sessions, so didn’t feel that it was worth carrying on as I’d enjoyed my sport, caught my target fish and got the required photographs. I caught every fish on the margin rod which was positioned at the edge of a deeper hole under the overhanging bush, and did not have a single bleep from the rod in open water which struck me as unusual. It did prove however that location is vitally important; finding a suitable feature can make all the difference, so find the fish, put a quality bait in front of them, and if they are feeding, you will catch...it’s that simple isn’t it? I wish it was....

ROTHERHAM HONOURS DISAPPOINTING EDGE SOUTH END TO PREEVEN AT SEASON THE YORKS DERBY OAKWELL THE BLADES It was honours even at Oakwell on Saturday as Barnsley and Wednesday shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. Danny Rose was on target for the Reds before Kieran Lee levelled for the Owls and the result was probably the right one on the balance of play. The White Rose clash was the last of the Owls’ summer friendlies before the start of the new Championship campaign next Saturday. And in terms of an aesthetically pleasing affair, it was arguably the players’ most routine afternoon so far. The first half-hour was played at typical pre-season pace, with little or no action of note, but the purpose was squad shuffling and fitness with just seven days to go to the season proper. Barnsley won a handful of corners in the early throes but there was no danger to the Owls’ backline. It was a long time coming but when the first chance of the opening 45 did arrive, it was converted on 31 minutes. Conor Hourihane sent a teasing free kick into the heart of the area and Rose reacted sharply to stab home from close range. Wednesday hit back with a Chris Maguire set piece that former Owls keeper Adam Davies tipped over and that was as good as it got for the visitors before the break. The Reds threatened immediately after the restart when Hourihane fired a good effort narrowly over the crossbar. But the Owls promptly raced up to the other end and equalised on 48 minutes. Gary Madine caught Davies off guard with a whipping shot from distance and the Barnsley keeper could only spill into the path of Lee, who made no mistake six yards from goal. That strike sparked the game into life and the tempo increased as a result. And Rose might have bagged his second of the game on the hour but glanced a header wide after ghosting into the box unmarked. Maguire then forced a fine save from Davies, who dived acrobatically to push the Scot’s angled drive round for a corner. Maguire was then a central figure in the rearguard, clearing a Sam Winnall shot off the line as both sides pressed for a winner. But the defences held firm in the closing stages and another good workout was under the belt before the real action begins at Brighton on 9 August. Barnsley: Davies, Brown, Dudgeon (M’Voto 71), Berry (Digby 64), Nyatanga, Cranie, Hourihane (McHale 86), Winnall, Jennings (Lazarus 64) , Rose (Boakye-Yiadom 80), Bailey Owls: Westwood, Young, Lees, Zayatte, Floro, Lee, Corry, McCabe, Maghoma (Nuhiu 64), Maguire (Croasdale 80), Madine (Dieseruvwe 74) Attendance: 5,193

Two second half goals condemned the Blades to defeat on the final Saturday before the Sky Bet Football League kicks off. Unitedites filled more than half of the Bootham Crescent crowd (992 of 1,761) but Ryan Jarvis netted both of the goals that secured York City’s victory. Wearing the new black away shirts for the first time, United saw a lot of the ball in the opening ten minutes with some neat passing in the middle third. However, the first chance was gifted to York following a mistake by ex-Blackpool duo Basham and McGahey but Coulson side-footed wide. The next chance was also York’s but Howard made an important reaction save to deny Lowe from Penn’s free-kick and Baxter, a minute before being replaced by De Girolamo, clipped United’s first chance just wide after a mistake in the home defence. Just after the half hour Basham’s glancing header from Alcock’s cross trickled wide whilst boss Clough was forced into a second change on 38 minutes when Dimaio took over from Wallace and the spell immediately before the break was similar to kick-off when United controlled possession without troubling goalkeeper Ingham. United made another change at the break, McNulty taking over from Alcock, but a succession of corners for the home side paved the way for them to take the lead on 56 minutes. Howard had already claimed a number of Meikle’s deliveries but on this occasion there was a spell of pinball before JARVIS forced the ball into the top corner. The Blades responded with efforts from Dimaio and De Girolamo and then McNulty appeared to be tripped by McCombe but referee Eltringham refused any penalty claims. Clough was readying further changes when York added a second on 69 minutes. With United’s defence overstretched, JARVIS linked up with Meikle before slotting past the exposed Howard. On 72 minutes, Butler, Doyle, McGinn and Porter were all introduced as United looked to get back into the game. Harris almost put McGinn in the clear and the latter came close to doing likewise for McNulty. Butler twice went close from set-pieces late on but it was not enough to prevent the Blades slipping to a third defeat of the pre-season campaign.

Doncaster Rovers’ pre-season campaign ended with a narrow defeat to local rivals Rotherham United, of the Sky Bet Championship, courtesy of goals from Matt Derbyshire and Ryan Hall. Though new signing Curtis Main responded for the hosts, they could not repeat the feat of six days earlier when they came back to draw 2-2 with fellow South Yorkshire side Sheffield Wednesday. Striker Main, who arrived in midweek, was one of a number of positives for Paul Dickov in a performance where his side were equal to their more illustrious counterparts for large parts of the game. Captain Rob Jones returned to the fold after a lengthy lay off following his serious neck injury, while new loan goalkeeper Jed Steer started between the sticks for the first time following his arrival from Premier League side Aston Villa. The visitors could, and arguably should, have been down to ten men when centre half Craig Morgan hauled Rovers front man Nathan Tyson down in the box in what was an even and fairly lacklustre first half. Neither efforts from former Rover’s Jordan Bowery or Paul Green troubled Steer and, when he was beaten by a smart finish from Matt Derbyshire, the goal was chalked off for offside. Bowery looked to have broken the deadlock just after the break when he poked over the onrushing Steer, only to see his strike partner Derbyshire apply the finishing touch and have another effort ruled out for offside. The former Blackburn and Olympiakos striker was not to be denied a third time, however, and hesitation in the Rovers six yard box saw Derbyshire poke past a stunned Steer.Things quickly went from bad to worse for the hosts in a spell which Paul Dickov would later describe as “naïve”. Millers midfielder Lee Frecklington got to the byline before pulling back for Hall to drill in to the turf from the edge of the area and past a despairing Steer for 2-0. Rovers showed that they weren’t going to buckle though, and the youngsters who were called upon to ‘step up’, by their manager in the week, did so towards the end. A sumptuous ball from Marc De Val slipped in Main who, with his first real chance of the afternoon, finished with aplomb to endear himself to the Rovers faithful. Late efforts from Harry Forrester and Luke McCullough didn’t trouble Scott Loach in to anything too pressing late on and bragging rights, for now, belong to United.

SWIFT SIGNING Rotherham United have today agreed the signing of Chelsea midfielder and England youth team starlet John Swift on a season-long loan deal. Swift, 19, has represented England at Under 16, 17, 18 and 19 level and made his Premier League debut as a late substitute for Eden Hazard in the Blues 2-1 win at Cardiff City last season. The talented versatile midfielder is an accomplished operator on either flank and can also play centrally, and is very highly

regarded by Chelsea boss José Mourinho who has personally been involved in the decision to allow young Swift to join the Millers. He is the latest Premier League prospect to be plucked from the top-flight by manager Steve Evans following the successful loan spells of James Tavernier and Haris Vuckic last season. The exciting youngster had been a long-term target of the Millers chief who revealed he was in a lengthy queue of admirers for the Portsmouth-born Blues youngster.
