MERCURY CLUBLAND AWARDS 2015 - LAST CHANCE TO VOTE! We’re now approaching the last chance to vote in this year’s Mercury Awards! Voting will close on Monday 1st September at 5.00 pm for both postal and email voting - any votes received in the post after that date will only count if postmarked prior to the closing date. This year the voting has been higher than ever, with a record number of email votes being received, and we have been amazed at the wide range of artists recognised by our readers in their voting, which just goes to show how much talent really is out there, offering incredible entertainment in the clubs and pubs across the area. Interestingly the last twelve months seems to have produced a resurgence in the number of all-live bands out on the road, with rock being especially popular. Many pubs are taking advantage of the new PRS rules, it seems, to offer live entertainment on a regular basis, which in turn provides more opportunities for young artists to break on to the circuit and learn their trade the proper way, rather than relying on the instant fame of The Voice and X Factor, and similar offerings on the TV. This year’s Presentation Night will be part of Weston Park Cancer Charity’s 20th Anniversary Celebration, and so “For One Night Only” you will have the opportunity to see a cameo showcase of some of Clubland’s favourite acts from this year - and in addition, we shall be announcing next week details of some exciting guest artists who have agreed to come along and perform and give their support to the
fundraising campaign! Watch out for next week’s issue, as we shall also be announcing ticket details – as always, the night is certain to be a sell-out so book early if you don’t want to miss this great night out! Voting is very close in some of categories, so if you haven’t been in touch already, please get your votes in as soon as possible! The list of winners is almost certain to produce a number of new faces who haven’t featured in the Awards before, so it bodes well for the future of live acts across the region.

ALBERT SNODGRASS One evening a family brings their frail, elderly mother to a nursing home and leaves her, hoping she will be well cared for. The next morning, the nurses bathe her, feed her a tasty breakfast, and set her in a chair at a window overlooking a lovely flower garden. She seems OK, but after a while she slowly starts to lean over sideways in her chair. Two attentive nurses immediately rush up to catch her and straighten her up. Again she seems OK, but after a while she starts to tilt to the other side. The nurses rush back and once more bring her back upright. This goes on all morning. Later the family arrives to see how the old woman is adjusting to her new home. “So Ma, how is it here? Are they treating you all right?” they ask. “It’s pretty nice,” she replies. “Except they won’t let you fart.” ‘Officer, two women are fighting over me.’ ‘What’s wrong with that?’ ‘The big, fat, ugly one is winning’ An unmarried mother has given birth to piglets. The Child Support Agency is now looking for the swine responsible A woman walked up to a little old man rocking in a chair on his porch. “I couldn’t help noticing how happy you look,” she said. “What’s your secret for a long happy life?” “I smoke three packs of cigarettes a day,” he said. “I also drink a case of whisky a week, eat fatty foods, and never exercise.” “That’s amazing,” the woman said. “How old are you?” “Twentysix,” he said. Three old ladies are sitting their retirement home reminiscing about old times. The first old lady recalls shopping at the greengrocers and demonstrates with her hands the length and girth of a cucumber she could by for a penny. The second old lady nods in agreement adding “onions were also much bigger” cupping her two hands together and putting two fingers up and saying. “I used to get two for a penny” “I can’t hear a word you are saying” says the third old lady “But I can certainly remember the bloke you are talking about”

Special Olympics GB is delighted to confirm its 2017 National Summer Games – the 10th in the history of the organisation - will be held in Sheffield from Monday 7th August - Friday 11th August 2017. It will be the second time the multi-sports event, expected to attract 2,000 athletes, 500 voluntary coaches, 500 volunteers and an estimated 5,000 family members has been held in the Steel City. The last time was 1993. Venues for the Games will include the Sheffield Hallam University City Athletics Stadium, Sheffield City Trust’s Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Concord Sports Centre, Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre and the English Institute of Sport Sheffield; Forge Valley School and more - all helping to host the UK’s biggest disability sports event in 2017. Councillor Julie Dore said: “I am absolutely delighted that Sheffield has been selected to host the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games. The decision is testament to the fact that Sheffield is a great sporting city, home to world-leading venues that befit a highly prestigious event such as this. From venues such as the English Institute of Sport Sheffield and Ponds Forge, to the award-winning Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Sheffield really does have it all. However, this isn’t just about places, but about people. ‘Sheffielders’ are well known for their love of sport, in what is our welcoming and inclusive city. This is another opportunity for our communities to get involved in a wonderful celebration of all things sporting. We estimate the economic benefit hosting the games in Sheffield will be in the region of £1.5m.”

After the illness delayed start to our football season, we’re off and running with full commentaries of Rotherham United this week. Unfortunately though it was a loss for the Millers against Watford. Joe was at the New York Stadium for the first full 90-minute commentary of the season and we’ll be back there on Saturday for Rotherham United v Brentford. There was an unexpected setup cost for our new system to broadcast commentaries of the games and I’d like to ask for your help in raising the money needed. Easyfundraising.org. uk is the easiest way to raise money for Radio Nightingale. Whatever you shop for over the summer – entertainment for the kids, trips and days out, school uniforms, stationery or computers - remember to shop online via http://www. easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/
So another Bank Holiday has been and gone, the frightening thing is that the next one will be one involving a man in a red suit sporting a white beard… In the meantime our time lines across all forms of social media seems to be littered with our friends pouring buckets of ice cold water over their heads. There is a reason for this the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, is to promote awareness of the disease ALS/ Motor Neurone Disease Association and encourage donations to research. Some folk wearing fancy dress, celebs getting involved and a few of my friends standing under the bucket of a JCB full of water, or maybe like me you just decided to get the pain over with and launch the bucket straight over your head. The great thing is it’s fantastic to see so many people having fun doing it whilst bringing joy to others laughing at their misfortune of being nominated. All in the name of charity and all being good sports. Good on you and keep em coming! On the Magic AM Breakfast Show this week, our mystery sound continues weekdays at 0720am and if you get it right you could win a stack of prizes.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker
I haven’t been fishing this week, apart from a couple of hours on the local river where I managed to lose two fish, and most of my hours anywhere near water have been spent investigating a relatively untapped new venue, but I have managed to do some review work instead… I won’t divulge the contents of my most recent reviews until they have been published, but instead I thought I would perhaps give my thoughts on how I go about conducting an examination of an item of tackle or bait. I often see anglers who consider a review to be brief statement about a product, then declare that they would either use it or not. Unfortunately, many of these assessments are lacking in what others really want to know; I’ve seen analysis which neglects to even name the product or what it is used for! Bear in mind that many of the reviews seen in magazines may indeed be weighted in favour of the supplier who has a considerable ‘Adspend’ and for that to continue, wants the product to be seen positively. That is understandable, magazines need advertising to continue, and manufacturers need to sell product, so the difficulty comes when an item is clearly not suitable for its intended purpose; how do I deal with that? Publish a review which slates a product and your source of future material will dry up very quickly. Noone appreciates a bad review being published, so if I do find that something is lacking, then it is only fair to offer that feedback to the supplier in an effort to improve the goods. As a consumer, you may not agree, but consider that all products should have been through this stage several times, by many reviewers, so that things are exactly right before a complimentary resume is released, and therefore the appraisal you finally read will generally be an honest one. A publisher who releases a review subsequently found to be untrue or misleading doesn’t last long as readers soon realise who has integrity when it comes to information! So what does need to be covered when evaluating a new product? Firstly, if I haven’t used it, then I can’t review it honestly, so I always spend a considerable period of time actually working with any item before I feel able to report. To begin with, the name of the subject matter and what it is intended to be used for; this is vital so the reader knows what the product is! This may also cover

alternative uses that the writer has discovered whilst using that product. Cost is another vital consideration for the angler, so whilst the rrp must be mentioned, it may be appropriate to mention that launch or online promotions offer a better price. Next up is workmanship; there is no point in encouraging readers to rush out and make a purchase if it falls apart after a couple of sessions; it is of no benefit to the company involved or indeed to me as my credibility will suffer… who would read any further reviews if the writer offers poor advice? Optional extras; does the seatbox, chair or bivvy have additional options to improve the original item? Are they supplied? Will it cost the consumer more? How about a suggestion of how best to utilise the item? An angling situation or indeed a venue where the item will perform strongly and which the reader may feel would suit there angling? The length of review is worth contemplating; will a few lines really suffice, or does it warrant an in-depth exploration hundreds of words long? Not only that, but will it need revisiting, an update, in time to come? Consideration must also be given to the target audience, there is little point detailing carp tackle in a fly fishing publication or website, so it is important to target the review in the right place to achieve maximum benefit. Pictures paint a thousand words as we all know, so show it off! A quick snap on a phone isn’t really sufficient, so spend time thinking about how best to illustrate the review. A solitary photograph of the packaging isn’t enough; break open the bait, show it on the hook, better still in the mouth of a big fish, or picture the tackle item in use. Do it on the bank; pick out details to show exactly what the buyer can expect, set against a suitable background and really highlight what is good about it! Finally, and perhaps the one piece of information most often forgotten; tell the consumer where they can get hold of this wonderful thing you have just spent hours promoting! Detail the website or retailer from where it can be purchased… not much point eschewing the benefits if readers don’t know where to buy it! NON-LEAGUE ROUND UP It has been a busy midweek in the County Senior League, with a full league programme from Monday through to Thursday. Premier Division Jubilee Sports followed up their 4-1 win over Frecheville, with a 2-2 draw at Holme Lea Sports Ground against Everst. Jubilee look to have adapted well since promotion in the Summer and sit atop the early standings. Everest also remain unbeaten. Kyle Lilley, Will Eades and James Dawes were all on the score-sheet as Handsworth Parramore beat Millmoor Juniors 3-1 at Grange Park. Frecheville bounced back from a heavy defeat to Jubilee Sports at the weekend, with an impressive 1-0 away win over Swallownest Miners Welfare. Ryan McDonald continued his good goalscoring form from last season with a hat-trick for Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves, as they beat Joker FC 4-0 away from home. Abdullah Hussein was also on the score-sheet for Stocksbridge. Oughtibridge bounced back from their opening day defeat to Swallwonest, with a 3-1 win over Wickersley at Wickersley School. Division One In similar fashion to Jubilee Sports, North Gawber Colliery sit atop the Division One table with four points from two games following promotion in the summer. North Gawber were 3-1 winners over South Kirkby Colliery on Wednesday night thanks to goals from Robert Cartwright, Carl Woodhead and Craig Walton. Tom Hardman scored the season’s first hat-trick at Herringthorpe Leisure Centre on Tuesday night, where Rotherham Town met Sheffield Athletic. Hardman’s were not enough though, as Rotherham were held to a 3-3 draw. Wayne Hughes scored three times for Silkstone United, as they beat Thorncliffe 5-2 at Silkstone Recreation Ground. It was an impressive victory for Silkstone, made even more so by the fact they had 10 men for 70 minutes after they had their goalkeeper sent-off. Kingstone United followed their draw at the weekend against Davy FC with a 2-1 home win over High Green Villa. Callum Neal and Richard Day scored the goals for Kingstone. AFC Dronfield made a positive start to their season, with a 3-1 win over Davy FC at Davy Sports Ground. Division Two Denaby Main made it two wins from two played, with an emphatic 8-1 home win over Maltby Main Reserves. Dan Phillips (3), Christopher Hancock (2), Thomas O’Neill (2) and Gary Adcock were all in the goals for the early league leaders. Equally impressive were Pargate Reserves, who beat Treeton Terriers 5-1 at Meadowhall Soccer Centre. Byron House’s debut in the County Senior League could not have gone any better for them. Scott Staples, Jordan Marshall (2) and Oliver Hall all scored to help them to a 4-0 away win over New Bohemians. Ryan Ramsey and Leon Stocks were both on target for Caribbean Sports, as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Sheffield Lane Top. Josh Evans scored the only goal for Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves to give them a 1-0 home win over Frecheville Reserves. Denaby United and Kiveton Park that most rare of score-lines – a goalless draw at Old Road Playing Fields. U21 Division Houghton Main U21 maintained their 100% start with a 6-1 win over Bawtry Town U21 at Middlecliffe Lane. Jack Conley (2), Josh Cornwall, Alex Lacey, Macauley Evans and Luke Addis all got their names on Houghton Main’s score-sheet. Goals from Danny Beighton, George Snelling and Matt Morton made sure Handsworth Parramore U21 opened their season with a 3-1 win over AFC Dronfield U21 at Handsworth Junior Sports Club. Gawber Colliery U21 and Athersley Recreation played-out a 2-2 draw.

PRINGLE’S CRISP STRIKE SEALS POINTS
BEN Pringle was the Rotherham United hero as his second-half strike earned his side their first away victory of the season at the expense of previously unbeaten Millwall. Following their narrow defeat at the hands of Watford in midweek, the Millers’ made just one change to their starting line-up with Ipswich loanee Anthony Wordsworth thrust straight into action at The Den after penning a deal with the Millers’ earlier this week. The visitors’ were quick out of the blocks and good work from Paul Taylor saw him evade the attentions of his marker before releasing Alex Revell, who forced the home side to concede a corner. From the resultant set-piece, Pringle swung a delightful centre which was only half-cleared by the home rearguard and the ball fell invitingly into the path of Wordsworth, who tried his luck with a dipping half-volley which narrowly cleared the home crossbar. The home side sprung into action when Scott McDonald’s inviting centre saw Kirk Broadfoot and Martyn Woolford grapple in the box, with Woolford being felled but the referee waved away home appeals for a spot kick. The Lions’ were looking the most likely and they came within a whisker of the breakthrough when Martin’s clipped ball to the far post saw Jamaican Ricardo Fuller rise highest between two defenders but under pressure, he could not direct his point-blank header goalwards as the ball whizzed past the upright. Just past the quarter hour, Josh Wright dragged a volley harmlessly wide from the edge of the box after Martin had got the better of Broadfoot on the left flank before Lee Frecklington tried his luck at the other end but he failed to trouble David Forde in the home goal. Minutes later, Richie Smallwood was penalised for tripping Martin in an inviting position and from the resultant free-kick, a training ground move involving Scott Malone and Woolford gave McDonald

a glimpse of goal but he failed to hit the target with a tame effort. Just past the half hour mark, the Millers’ were indebted to skipper Craig Morgan after his timely tackle prevented Martin firing a crosscum-shot across goal before a rare foray from the visitors’ saw Taylor get the better of Shaun Williams before firing a left-footed effort which blazed over the bar. Despite being second best for much of the half, the Millers’ they had their best spell of the game just shy of the interval. Fine interplay involving Taylor and Smallwood gave Pringle the opportunity to fire a deep cross which was turned behind. In the last kick of the half, Malone was the beneficiary of a lucky rebound off Morgan but he fluffed his lines when he blazed over. Half-time:- Millwall 0 Rotherham United 0 The Millers’ started the second half as they finished the first when a long punt by Adam Collin was not cleared decisively by the Lions’ defence and Taylor drilled a shot through a ruck of bodies from the edge of the box which had Forde nervously scurrying across goal as it struck the side netting. Revell was then seemingly flattened on the edge of the box but the referee waved play on before the visitors’ were rewarded for their early second-half pressure when the breakthrough on 50 minutes. There looked little danger until the ball found Taylor on the left flank, who teased and tormented Carlos Edwards, before delivering a tantalising centre which was aimed at Revell, who failed to make contact but the ball fell invitingly for the on-rushing Pringle, who stuck out a leg to divert the ball home from close range. The home side responded immediately to the setback and Williams fired a snap shot from an acute angle which Collin spilled initially before the ball was bundled clear while Woolford fired over from distance in the next phase of play. Just past the hour mark, sub Magaye Gueye almost made an immediate impact when he firstly climbed highest from Malone’s centre but he headed over before he almost latched onto McDonald’s pinpoint delivery moments later. With the game in the balance, home skipper

Alan Dunne became the first to see yellow after Taylor spun him expertly before being pulled down. The home side were starting to chuck bodies forward and Morgan had to be on-hand to clear the danger before McDonald’s superb cross caused havoc in the visitors’ rearguard as Collin raced from his line to punch clear to no avail but Joe Skarz was bravely on-hand to head the ball over, with the ex-Bury defender injuring himself in the process. Skarz took no further action in the game before Rotherham countered with panache paving the way for Taylor to show fleet of foot to almost put Frecklington in the clear but Mark Beevers blocked the attempted pass. With time running out for the home side, Frecklington bravely threw himself infront of Dunne’s piledriver before Taylor was yellowcarded for time wasting as the Millers’ held on to record their second victory of the season. EVANS PLEASED
Manager Steve Evans was pleased with the half-time changes that saw Rotherham United collect their first win on the road this afternoon in a closely-fought game at Millwall. Ben Pringle’s second half goal was enough for the Millers who came under a lot of pressure in the first-half, but the Millers boss was delighted with the character showed in the second period. “I think we started slowly,” Evans said at fulltime. “I don’t think we were brave enough but we dug in and I think first half we were quite comfortable but Fuller should score; we also missed two sitters and we should have gone in at half-time 2-1 up. We swapped our wide players at half-time to get them into the game and give them chance to go and join Alex and the goal comes from that when Taylor does a bit of magic with the cross and Ben comes in from the other touchline so it’s a fantastic training ground goal.” Paul Taylor was a standout performer in the newly-worn white away kit this afternoon, creating the goal amongst a number of other chances and Evans was quick to praise him and a number of his teammates including debutant Anthony Wordsworth who has followed a number of former Ipswich men to New York Stadium.

OWLS NEWS2014/15 OWLS WEATHER LATE STORM
And the Owls exorcised a long-standing spirit along the way, posting their maiden victory at The Riverside Stadium. Stuart Gray’s side headed into half time two goals up through Atdhe Nuhiu and Stevie May – the latter’s first for the club. Nuhiu completed the job in the second period and despite Grant Leadbitter converting two penalties for Boro, it proved futile to prevent an Owls triumph. The visitors were off to a dream start, going ahead after just six minutes. A Jacques Maghoma corner was swung to the far post, where Glenn Loovens nodded back across goal and after a
brief scramble in the sixyard box, Nuhiu forced over the line. Boro were stung into life and Adam Reach drilled a low shot on the angle that Keiren Westwood flicked wide. The hosts went closer still on 16 minutes when Leadbitter aimed a dipping free kick that came back into play off the top of the crossbar. Wednesday hit the woodworks themselves midway through the first half. Maghoma delivered a low ball from the left into the box that May clipped goalwards only to see Tomas Mejis brush onto the post. Then, four minutes before half time, the Owls went one better and doubled their lead. Nuhiu glanced on from a

deep diagonal free kick into the path of May, who made no mistake in placing over the advancing Mejias. Things just got better for Wednesday ten minutes after the break. Maghoma floated an accurate set piece into the mix and Nuhiu was up first to power a firm header past Mejias. The game appeared all but over in terms of the destiny of the points but Boro were still in pursuit of a response and Westwood had to be on his toes to deny Kike at his near post. Moments later, Liam Palmer bravely went to ground in thwarting substitute Adam Clayton from a blistering hit just outside the penalty area. Boro did find the target on 72 minutes as Wednesday conceded a penalty for the second successive game. Loovens tripped Kike after a skilful turn from the striker, the referee pointed to the spot and Leadbitter did the honours from 12 yards. Coke headed against the
post at the other end, which would have seen Wednesday out of sight if an inch across. Then just as the Owls seemed to be cruising to the final whistle, Middlesbrough were awarded a second penalty two minutes into stoppage time. Loovens was adjudged to have handled a Leadbitter shot and the midfield man stepped up to smash past Westwood. Boro motored forward in the dying moments but to no avail and the Owls breathed a sigh of relief when the whistle sounded to close a compelling Championship contest. Owls: Westwood, Palmer, Loovens, Lees, Mattock, Maghoma (McCabe 89), Semedo, Coke, Maguire, Nuhiu (Madine 70), May (Helan 81)

GRAY DELIGHTED WITH POINTS Stuart Gray hailed his side’s win at Middlesbrough on Saturday – although he confessed to some nerves towards the end of the game. Wednesday were coasting 3-0 at The Riverside but conceded two penalties late in the contest to give the hosts a potential lifeline. But the Owls held out to ensure their impressive start to the new campaign continued. He said: “It was a bit nervy in the last few seconds but we thoroughly deserved the win. I think the first one was a penalty but not the second because it hit Glenn Loovens square in the belly. But we held out for the points and the penalties aside, I am delighted. We played ever so well, we controlled the game and it should have been a lot more comfortable than it was.”
Gray was pleased with the team as a whole and individually the goalscorers Atdhe Nuhiu (2) and Stevie May. He said: “Atdhe has started the season really well and the only thing he was missing was more goals because of the chances we’ve created. But he has taken his chances today and I’m a big believer that the harder you work, the luckier you get. Atdhe has put a real shift in today but so have all the lads.” “I’m really pleased for Stevie May, he showed his striker instincts and took his goal really well. He’s a natural goalscorer and this is just the start for him.”
MAY GETS CALL-UP FROM SCOTLAND Owls strike ace Stevie May has been called up to the Scotland Under21 squad. The Scots continue their 2015 European Under-21 Championship qualification campaign with two games against Slovakia and Luxembourg. Scotland will face Slovakia on Thursday 4 September in Senec before travelling to Luxembourg, who prop up Group Three at the foot of the table, in Differdange. The call-up represents a good spell for May, who has enjoyed a flying start to his Owls career. The 21-year-old opened his Wednesday account on Saturday at The Riverside with a superbly taken first half strike, as the Owls posted three points on Teeside.

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY
BLADES NEWS2014/15 BACK TO BACK WINS FOR BLADES Jose Baxter’s goal early in the second half helped the Blades to a first home league win of the campaign, and a second win of the week. Following the midweek win at Peterborough, boss Clough made one change to the starting line-up as Higdon took over from McNulty, who dropped to the bench. The visitors included one-time former Blades loanee McLeod. United persisted with the 4-4-2 formation, which gleaned three points at Peterborough, and were allowed plenty of the ball in the opening five minutes, which resulted in Higdon heading over a Davies corner. Following the initial spell of Blades pressure, Smith fired wide for Crawley before a good opportunity materialised on 14 minutes. A mix-up between Collins and Doyle presented Young with a shooting chance
but Howard was down to his right smartly to push around a post. The opening half hour’s action saw Crawley content to operate on the counter-attack and with pace on their side they looked dangerous. Collins missed a header, exposing McGahey, but referee D’Urso showed little interest when the young centre half and McLeod clashed on the edge of the box. It was hoped that a spell of rain and Murphy and Baxter switching positions would improve United’s chances of opening the scoring but Crawley were protecting their box well. On 37 minutes a foul by Edwards on the edge of the box resulted in Davies whipping in a free-kick but Jensen gathered at the second attempt, despite being under pressure from Murphy and Alcock. Henderson and Basham picked up bookings

for separate fouls as half-time approached but the away team finished the half the stronger. On 42 minutes Edwards found space in midfield and shot at the crossbar, with Howard picking himself up it was left to McEveley to block the rebound from Bawling. Another chance saw Leacock keep the ball in and McLeod fire into the Kop with the Blades defence asking questions of each other. The Blades made the perfect start to the second half, taking the lead on 48 minutes. A patient move saw the ball shipped out to the right and after Alcock’s lay-off, BAXTER set himself on the edge of the box before curling into the corner of the net, leaving goalkeeper Jensen stranded. United had chances to extend the lead on a couple of occasions straight after the goal. Following a driving Murphy run, Baxter curled just wide of an upright and then Higdon’s effort was blocked by a defender after good work between Murphy and Davies on the right. The chances continued to fall for the Blades. Goalkeeper Jensen pushed away from Basham after a low cross from Davies and
McEveley’s long range effort was blocked. Flynn replaced Baxter for the final 20 minutes, leaving Murphy in attack with Higdon, whilst the next chance dropped to McGahey after a Davies corner but the youngster could not find the target. Reed replaced Higdon, suggesting a change in formation for the final ten minutes, whilst Crawley’s first serious chance of the second half arrived on 83 minutes from Henderson’s corner but McGahey did enough to put off Leacock. McEveley limped off late on, replaced by Harris. In injury-time the Blades had a chance to double the lead when Flynn and Harris combined on the left but this time Davies, in space in the centre of the goal, shot wide. Leacock was added to Crawley’s attack but United held firm at the back and kept possession well - until the fourth and final minute of added time. Goalkeeper Jensen was up for a corner and challenged with his opposite number but Howard punched clear and McLeod’s late shot was blocked by a barrage of bodies as the Blades held on.
POINTS FIRST PLAUDITS LATER Chris Morgan said Saturday’s win over Crawley Town at Bramall Lane turned out to be more about points than plaudits. A single second-half goal from Jose Baxter settled the contest in United’s favour as the Blades built on their midweek maximum at Peterborough, with a first home success in Sky Bet League One this term. Morgan conceded afterwards that United adopted an over cautious towards the end of the game, but said the win will have sent everyone connected to the Club home happy. Speaking in the aftermath of the victory, the Blades first-team coach remarked: “Crawley finished the first-half strongly and we warned the players they would probably come out after the break fancying their chances, but kicking down towards the Kop always gives us that lift and in the end I thought we were deservedly the winners. Towards the

end there were signs of nerves throughout the stadium and frustration at our tactics, perhaps we did start running the ball into the corners to early, but we have won our first home game in the league and kept a clean sheet, so we can’t be too critical. We have got to be more cute at times, but seeing games out becomes a positive habit, we proved last season that we are capable of seeing games out on a regular basis and hopeful this will give the boys confidence to do more of the same this season.” On the decisive moment, a second excellent strike from Baxter in the space of five days, Morgan commented: “It was a terrific goal and we couldn’t have wished for it to have fallen to anyone better than Jose, his technique was fantastic and the goalkeeper didn’t stand a chance. It was so easy on the eye and the ease in which he strode up and struck the ball was nothing short of remarkable, the goal came at a crucial time.”
Sheffield United legend Chris Morgan takes the Ice Bucket Challenge at Bramall Lane following victory over Crawley Town, Andy Garner and Darren Ward do the honours, and get nominated for their troubles.
