TICKETS GO ON SALE FOR MCBUSTED’S RETURN TO SHEFFIELD With the excitement of 2014’s most incredible, jaw-dropping arena tour still ringing in fans’ ears nationwide, and almost exactly one year on from their formation, McBusted announce their return to the live stage in spring 2015. McBusted announced their original eleven arena date tour of 2014 last November, with the initial dates selling out in an hour. Due to phenomenal demand from fans and the general public, the tour eventually played to a staggering 350,000 people across an amazing 35 arena shows, before culminating in a show stopping headline performance at Hyde Park to 60,000 people. Now armed with a superb debut album, and a massive new single ‘Air Guitar’, the six piece supergroup announce their return to Sheffield on Tuesday 24th March 2015.

Tickets go on general sale 7th November 9am priced £45.65 & £41.25 (including booking fee) and are available from the Arena Box Office on 0114 256 56 56, online at www.motorpointarenasheffield. co.uk or in person from the Arena. Every single moment of McBusted’s launch and first year as a band was captured by the band’s long-time friend and film maker David Spearing. The result is the behind the scenes film ‘TourPlay’, which last week received an exclusive limited release in Vue cinemas nationwide, and will be released on DVD on November 24th. McBusted’s single ‘Air Guitar’ is released November 23rd, with their debut album ‘McBusted’ following on December 1st.

Weekly Wit With...

ALBERT SNODGRASS

I was in a restaurant with a few mates last night. We decided to order their “University Challenge.” It’s a starter for ten. A policeman pulled me over and said, “Do you know why I pulled you over?” I said, “Because you wanted to see how tall I am?” “Step out of the car, sir,” he ordered. I said, “See, I told you.” “Well, nan,” I said. “This is where you will be staying eventually. Do you like it?” “Will you go away and let me visit your granddad’s grave in peace,” she shouted. “We’re going to be together for the rest of our lives,” smiled my girlfriend as we flew out to our dream holiday in Hawaii. “You seem pretty sure of yourself,” I replied. “I am,” she said, gazing out the window. “The left wing’s fallen off and the engine’s on fire.” Coffee makes people really aggressive. Last night I had eleven pints at the pub and my wife two coffees at home. You should’ve seen how angry she was. I phoned my girlfriend and said, “What a day! I accidentally threw the dog’s ball off a cliff.” “Oh dear,” she said. “Did you have to go down and get it?” I replied, “Nah. I’ll not need it again anyway.” Usually, throwing money at a problem will solve it. However, if your problem is a fire, it’ll probably make it worse.

GIVE YOUR YOUNGSTER A HEAD START WITH YOUNG DRIVER Young Driver is the UK’s largest provider of pre-17 driving lessons and has delivered 150,000 lessons at 30 venues across Great Britain. Youngsters have great fun, but it’s also helping them become safer drivers, by educating them over a longer period of time. At Young Driver, tuition is provided by highly qualified CRB-checked driving instructors in dual control cars. The lessons take place on private property and a whole road system is created to help the drivers learn everything from changing gears and parking to using roundabouts and manoeuvring a slalom. Youngsters are encouraged to consider responsible driving and a personalised Drive Diary charts how they get on. Driving tuition is available for disabled youngsters and birthday parties are also available, where six or more youngsters can come along together and all have a turn. Kim Stanton from Young Driver added: “We believe it is important to train drivers over a longer period of time and that catching

youngsters when their attitudes towards driving are still developing is the key to producing a safer driver. By starting at a younger age you can more easily focus on attitude and behaviour and you have a better chance of tackling a young person’s sense of invulnerability.” For more information go to www. youngdriver.eu or call 0844 371 9010

SOUTHEY SOCIAL CLUB RAISE OVER £1,000 ‘FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY’ Southey Social Club have raised over a staggering £1,100 for their local cancer hospital by holding a special event as part of the charity’s initiative ‘For One Night Only’. Over the course of the year and in celebration of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s 20th anniversary, social clubs and community groups from across the region have been raising vital funds for the region’s only cancer hospital. Southey Social Club was one of the first to pledge their support to the ‘For One Night Only’ initiative, having several poignant reasons to raise money for this fundamental cause. Club Entertainment Secretary, Mark Macdonald, played a key role in organising the night which attracted hundreds of people and raised £1,105 for the Cancer Charity. He said, “With performances from Coyote Rock Band, Big Money games, Bingo and a Super 5 raffle on the night, it was a great

event which raised a fantastic amount for our local cancer hospital.” “We’d like to thank club members and non-club members for coming along on the night and generously supporting us and contributing to this incredible total.” In celebration of the clubs efforts Mark presented the cheque to the charity at Bramall Lane ahead of Sheffield United’s victory against Yeovil Town on Tuesday 21st October. Charity Patron and Operations Director at Sheffield United Football Club, Dave McCarthy, who has supported the For One Night Only initiative throughout said, “As patron of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity I am proud to have been able to support the ‘For One Night Only’ initiative this year.” “Having experienced, first hand the incredible and vital service provided by staff at the hospital, it is brilliant that this money can go towards ensuring this level of support for cancer

patients in our region can continue.” Weston Park Hospital is one of only four dedicated cancer hospitals in England and currently treats around 60,000 patients each year. The Cancer Charity needs to raise over £2 million this year to fund a wide range of projects that will keep Weston Park Hospital at the forefront of cancer treatment. Charity Fundraising Manger, Helen Gentle said, “We are incredibly grateful to Southey Social club for leading the way with our For One Night Only initiative and raising such an impressive amount.” “The money raised will make a huge difference for, not only those receiving cancer treatment at the hospital currently, but those who may find themselves here in the future.” To find out more about how to get involved in For One Night Only visit www. wphcancercharity. org.uk/events

NEWS & INFORMATION

WEATHER PERSONAL TAX SUMMARIES COLD CASH PAYMENTS People across the UK will begin receiving their first personal tax summary from Monday 3 November. Find out what they’re all about. 1. Personal tax summaries show you how your tax is calculated and what it is spent on Personal tax summaries show you how much income tax and national insurance contributions (NICs) you paid over the financial year 2013 to 2014, and how this is calculated. The back of the summaries show you how your tax contributed to public spending, for example, how much of the tax you paid went on health, defence, overseas aid and more. They also show you your ‘tax-free’ amount. This is how much money you earn which isn’t taxed at all (the government doesn’t tax the first £9,440 you earn each year). Access examples of the tax summaries on HM Treasury’s flickr page at https:// www.flickr.com/photos/hmtreasury/ sets/72157643350598405 2. Overall, 24 million people will receive a personal tax summary This is the first year that the government is sending out personal tax summaries, and from now on, you’ll continue to get one each year. There are around 30 million personal taxpayers in the UK, so around 80% of individual taxpayers will receive a personal tax summary. People won’t receive a personal tax summary if they have paid no income tax in the past year or where we are waiting for information - for example a change of address, or updated PAYE information from their employer. 3. You don’t have to do anything with them

The personal tax summary is for your reference only – you don’t have to do anything with it. The government is sending them out to improve the transparency of the personal tax system, so that you know how much tax you pay, how it is calculated, and how the government spends it. It also means that you can make us, the government, more accountable for the tax that you pay and the way that it is spent. 4. It’s all part of a wider aim of the government to make the tax system fair and simpler HMRC’s self assessment customers can already access their Tax Summary through HMRC Online Services. These online summaries will are available to self assessment customers from the 3rd November providing they have filed their tax return for the previous year. Customers who file after the 3rd of November will be informed of the online tax summary when they submit their tax return. In future, HMRC will provide everyone with a digital account which will include their tax summary. 5. Not everybody will get theirs on the same day Personal tax summaries will be sent in batches over several week, as there are a large number going out in total. The first tax summaries will hit doormats on 3 November, and most will have been sent by mid-December. 6. The personal tax statements are all sent confidentially We don’t include any sensitive information, such as your national insurance number, on the personal tax summaries to protect taxpayers’ I was a miner in the Yorkshire pits for information. CAN YOU HELP?

An estimated 4 million people are in line for extra government help this year to turn up the heating during the coldest snaps, as the Cold Weather Payments season begins on 1st November 2014. Poorer pensioners and low-income households, which include disabled people or children under the age of 5, could be due a £25 Cold Weather Payment each time temperatures either dip below an average of zero degrees Celsius for 7 consecutive days, or are forecast to do so. The latest figures show that more than £700 million has been paid out to vulnerable people under this scheme since 2010 through some 28 million separate payments. This government’s permanent increase to £25 means that an additional £466 million has been paid out – 3 times the amount that would have been paid if Cold Weather Payments had remained at their previous rate of £8.50. DWP Minister Steve Webb said:“It is vital that pensioners and vulnerable people are given extra help to turn up the thermostat and keep warm when temperatures plunge. This help, combined with the Winter Fuel Allowance and Warm Home Discount Scheme, is making a real difference to help the most vulnerable people in our society. In most cases, Cold Weather Payments are paid automatically to those eligible. But I urge anyone, especially older people who might be missing out on Pension Credit, to call us.” There are up to 1.6 million pensioners who may be entitled to Pension Credit who are not currently claiming it and who could be eligible for Cold Weather Payment as a result. Who qualifies? Pensioners on Pension Credit will usually qualify for the scheme. Some people on other benefits may also qualify for a Cold Weather Payment, including: • Income Support • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance • income-related Employment and Support Allowance • Universal Credit People can find out if they are due a Cold Weather Payment by calling – 0800 99 1234 This number can also be used to claim Pension Credit and Housing Benefit without having to sign a form. Find out more about Cold Weather Payments at https://www.gov.uk/coldweather-payment/eligibility.

WIN AN AMAZING FESTIVE DAY OUT AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE

Are you a racing fan? Or do you and your partner simply fancy a great day out in the run up to Christmas? Our good friends at Doncaster Racecourse have kindly donated a pair of County Enclosure tickets for the big National Hunt Christmas Race Meeting on December 13th! Doncaster Racecourse is one of the country’s premier horse racing venues and home to some of the most prestigious events in the horse racing calendar. It possesses a rich history within the grounds of Town Moor, with two of the World’s oldest horse races - the Doncaster Cup and the St Leger Stakes - taking place during the flagship Ladbrokes St Leger Festival. Doncaster Racecourse is ideally located for you to enjoy a hospitality experience to remember. Showcasing stunning scenery against a spacious and ultra-modern Grandstand, it offers surroundings to suit an event of any occasion. With a full card of seven jump races, our winner will be able to

watch in comfort from the best view on the course and enjoy the ultimate viewpoint for racing. This is the place to be seen – and if you want viewing access of the Winning Post, Saddling Boxes and Parade Ring area – the County Enclosure is for you. Plus, you can enjoy access to the exclusive Champagne Lawn and Silks Restaurant. County Enclosure customers are welcome to enjoy the facilities of our Grandstand and Family Enclosures. If you are new to racing, or just new to Doncaster follow these easy steps below to make sure you know what’s going on around the course: 1. The Weighing Room - 30 minutes before the race Whilst you are looking at your race card, deciding who to bet on, the jockeys’ will be ‘weighing out’. Their total weight, including the saddle, must meet a set limit for a particular horse in a particular race. After the race, the jockeys’ must also ‘weigh in’ to

ensure that the weight remains the same. This is also the base for the stewards, who are the Jockey Club officials who work behind the scenes at every race meeting to ensure that every race is run according to the rules. 2. The Pre-parade Ring - 20 minutes before the race As part of their pre-race preparation, the horses will be brought from the stables to the pre-parade ring and led around by their grooms. This is to help them stay warm and focused and gives racegoers a chance to see the horses before they are saddled and to assess their fitness attitude. 3. The Parade Ring - 15 minutes before the race: Also known as the Paddock, this is a must for all racegoers to see the horses close-up before the race and to hopefully pick the winner! Here you will also see all the ‘connections’ of each horse; the owners, trainers, stable staff etc 4. Place your bets - 10 minutes before the race There are a variety of places to bet at the course, the tote windows

run along the front of the main stand and also around the Clock Tower stand, whilst Ladbrokes are inside the main stand in both the County and Grandstand enclosures and the bookmakers in the betting ring in front of the main stand in the Grandstand Enclosure. 5. The Racecourse - during the race: The actual race can be viewed from different positions around the course although in order to be level with the winning post you will need to be in the County Enclosure. It is a good idea to watch from different points around the course to get varying perspectives of the race. Full details of each race can be found in a race card, which you can purchase when you enter the course for only £2.50. 6. The Parade Ring - after the race: After each race, the horses all come back into this area and are met by their grooms. They will be unsaddled so that the jockeys’ can go and ‘weigh in’ and all the unplaced horses are taken back to the stables to be washed down.

The first three placed horses are kept in the Parade Ring and circulated by the markers relevant to their position so that Press and Media can take photographs and conduct interviews with its ‘connections’. When all the jockeys’ have ‘weighed in’ you will hear a call of ‘horses away’ from the weighing room - this gives the all clear for the remaining horses to return to the stables. The Parade Ring is also where the winning owners and sometimes the trainer and jockey, will be presented with their trophy by the race sponsor. Please note: the dress code for the County Enclosure is smart attire. Strictly no Jeans, Sportswear or Trainers, and Gentlemen must wear a collared Shirt. The dress codes also apply to children.

COMPETITION To be in with a chance of winning a pair of County Enclosure passes to the National Hunt Christmas Raceday sponsored by BET365 on Saturday 13 December simply send us your name and daytime telephone number to either info@ mercurynewspaper.co.uk or 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG before Noon on Friday 14th November. Winner drawn at Random.

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

Next week it’s our biggest outside broadcast of the year to mark Remembrance Sunday. Once again we’ll be broadcasting the Service of Remembrance from the Rotherham Minster and following the military parade to the Cenotaph in Clifton Park for the two-minute silence at 11.00am on Sunday. The service will be led by the Vicar of Rotherham, Rev Canon David Bliss, to remember and give thanks for the sacrifice made by countless thousands in the course of armed conflict in Europe and beyond. This year being particularly poignant as it is 100 years since the outbreak of World War One. After the outside broadcast, programmes continue with the Hospital Chaplaincy team at the Rotherham Hospital and their Remembrance Service. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw, Hospedia and online. LIVE AT THE PARAMOUNT FRIDAY 7TH NOVEMBER - 7:30pm - £16.00 The Counterfeit Sixties Show

Relive the sounds of the swinging sixties, as Britain’s No1 tribute show brings alive the magic of the sixties with their tribute to over twenty five bands of that era.

19TH - 22ND NOVEMBER- 7:15pm - £15.00 Hairspray

Tracy Turnblad, a large girl with big hair and a kind heart, has only one passion--to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, “The Corny Collins Show” and is quickly transformed into a teen celebrity. She then successfully sets out to vanquish the program’s reigning princess, win the heart of the super handsome Link Larkin, and racially integrate the television show. OF COURSE WE WANT THEM BABY

Preview: The Human League, Date: 10/12/14 Venue: Sheffield City Hall By Kt Evans

The Human League are an institution… fact. So what better way to celebrate the Sheffield three piece’s gigantic success than witnessing their infamous live show at Sheffield’s City Hall on 10th December. The perfect way to kick start this year’s Christmas festivities, we suggest you snap up tickets while you can as we have a sneaking suspicion these local legends are going to sell out in no time! The Human League are undeniably one of the UK’s most influential 80’s pop acts. Having released 9 studio albums along with 30 singles and a handful of compilation albums, the three piece from The Steel City have sound tracked the last thirty years with their unique take on popular music. With killer hits to include ‘Don’t You Want Me Baby,’ amazingly released all the way back in 1981 off the groups third studio album ‘Dare,’ other hits include ‘Living In Electric Dreams,’ ‘Being Boiled’ alongside our personal favourite ‘Human.’ Masters of producing melodies and riffs which as of yet fail to sound outdated, it’s amazing to witness the resurgence of electro and tech pop music into the current chart, something which Human League were pioneering in the early 1980’s. Although the group haven’t been chart toppers for a few years, this certainly doesn’t mean they have had a hiatus from music. Having recently headlined the mighty Guilfest in July 2014 to a 5000 strong audience, the trio are forever appearing on national along with international festival bills, gigs and concerts, ensuring the Human League’s sound is

constantly spread. Their fan base; ranging from trendy young music searchers to dedicated listeners from way back when they first began, is forever on the increase and sure as hell ensure each and every live show The Human League perform is one you certainly won’t forget. Support will come in the form of Ronika, an English singer songwriter and DJ born and raised in Nottingham. Having gained a hefty amount of attention for her electro and disco style music creations, the star released her debut album ‘Selectadisc’ this year, a bold and ballsy introduction into the music scene. The Human League are performing at Sheffield’s City Hall on 10th December. Tickets start from £32.50. Doors 18.30. For more information, visit the City Hall’s website on www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/events.

News: Bring Me The Horizon Forced To Explain Themselves By Kt Evans

Easily one of Sheffield’s finest musical exports, five piece Bring Me The Horizon have this week been forced to explain their actions after previewing new single ‘Don’t look Down,’ part of the Radio 1’s rescoring of the 2011 film Drive. A distant cry from what fans of the band were expecting, BMTH have taken a drastic musical shift which it seems is sitting pretty sour with many listeners. It would be a very challenging task to attempt to place Sheffield quintet Bring Me The Horizon into a genre. Starting their career back in 2008, the group were easily categorized as metalcore however as every album grew, so did the band’s sound. Music more friendly to listen to and commercially adopting a wider reach, would it be acceptable to call BMTH an alternative rock group now? We’ll let you be the judge of that. ‘Sempiternal’ was the bands last recorded studio album, released in April 2013. A culmination of electronic rock beats verses ‘old-style’ screams we thought were long gone, fans were eagerly awaiting audible delights of 2014. Mid October saw ‘Drown’ getting previewed, a commercial yet ridiculously catchy track with heavy use of cleans most were not expecting. However controversy really hit home with the preview of the groups second single of 2014, ‘Don’t Look Down,’ featuring Orifice Vulgatron, rapper from British group Foreign Beggars.

group who were once the back bone of British metalcore, it really did seem BMTH has sold their souls to the devil. Don’t get us wrong, it’s natural to step up your musical style, fine tune the details here and there or, most importantly, grow up musically. What better example can we use than that of Arctic Monkeys progression through music? However, BMTH took this just too damn far. Simply put, it’s like buying a Labrador puppy and it turning into a sheep. Not what you were expecting. Due to massive amounts of fan confusion and slating on social media websites, lead vocalist Oli Sykes was forced to make this explanation: “ We are really proud of what we created but at the same time we understand people’s confusion and panic after hearing the track. We were approached by BBC Radio one to score a piece of music for a rescore of the movie Drive. It you’ve seen it, I’m sure you’ll agree neither anything from out previous albums or Drown would have fir very well with the vibe of the movie.” “We took the opportunity to make something completely different, something we wouldn’t usually do – although I feel that doesn’t really make any sense anymore because we never do the same thing twice.”

As far removed as what you could possibly expect from a

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

Back to basics this week, a couple of lightweight rods, a small rucksack and a handful of lures made for a simple session by the river... I chose to fish the fantastic River Dove which looked in fine fettle after a few days of rain. The surrounding trees a mixture of reds, golds and oranges as autumn gives way to winter, and a misty start to the morning had me almost skipping across the meadow towards the river! I love this time of year, and couldn’t wait to drop a lure into the depths of the Dove which is reputed to hold decent perch and pike aplenty! With the chance of chub or trout also falling to my lures, surely a bumper session was on the cards? I’ve only fished this particular section a handful of times over the years, but I’ve had good bream and trout, been smashed up by predators as I’ve winched in smaller silvers and even heard rumours of occasional salmon, so it is a water which can throw up the unexpected. My intention was to use a two rod approach, the first loaded with an Ecogear BTS shad to target pike, the second rigged with a tiny jighead and miniscule lure to flick into likely marginal swims for something else. The Dove has an abundance of likely spots to consider; a bridge casting deep shadows over dark depths, undercut banks, swirling eddies, tangled rafts and deep holes all warrant investigation, and, as I wandered the bank, I explored every last one of them. Sadly, to no avail... I tried all I could muster; a fast retrieve, sink and draw, a slow return, bouncing lures across the bottom, and aside from one solitary pluck at the tail of a lure, I drew a complete and very frustrating blank! After a couple of hours, I knew I wasn’t going to catch, so a move was on the cards... A nearby pool offered stories of big perch and lots of smaller pike; I have seen predators strike at silver fish here, so knew of its potential. I have to be honest though, I hadn’t seen any of the rumoured monster perch, but in the circumstances, there is only one way to find out! The current rage for dropshot fishing is a great way to present a lure in a fairly static way, but I’ve had far more success recently with the Iwashi jighead and the tiny Grass Minnow ss lure which can be skipped over the bottom debris or dinked into likely spots. I selected a very pale, almost white lure, and threaded it onto the hook before dropping it no more than a rod length out across the front of a reed bed Superbly located for Holidays & Short Stays Quality furnished log cabins, sleep up to 6. WiFI Friendly. Seven well-stocked fishing lakes on 40 acres in the beautiful Lincolnshire Countryside. 30 acres of woodland - 10 acre wildflower meadow Carp to 15lb - F1s to 3lb - Tench 8lb - 100lb Match Weights Full tackle and bait shop on site, full licensed bar. Perch can be extremely obliging fish, and only a few seconds had passed before the welcome rattle of the tip told me a hungry little sergeant had impaled itself on the super sharp hook. A three ounce perch was duly swung to hand and unhooked, but not before I reminded myself just how impressive these feisty fish can be. Aggressively aloft, that spikey dorsal fin and armoured gill plates which can draw blood easily have to be respected and admired, even in a tiny version, and a big fish is truly a sight to behold! The pike just didn’t offer any sport at all, perhaps due to the unseasonably humid weather, but I was having lightweight fun with the perch. I had nothing bigger than six ounces, but it was almost fish-a-chuck fun on very light tackle and each one fought hard to escape. I found perch in the unlikeliest of places too, not least in the overgrown trickle of an inflow pipe which formed a small pool of no more than two feet long and less than a couple of feet deep from where I snaffled more than a dozen fish. It was great to see them pursue the tiny lure through crystal clear water right under the rod tip, real fun fishing which is often forgotten these days. Grab a light rod and give it a go, you may be surprised how much fun it is!

STEELERS NEWS Steelers captain Jonathan Phillips is just one game away from joining the Steelers 500 club. Only Jason Hewitt (574) and Mark Thomas (564) have played over 500 EIHL games for the club, though Ron Shudra still holds the overall appearance record of 626 games played in all competitions. “I didn’t know anything about the 500 games until Monday when I got the phone all from the club” said Phillips “That’s a lot of games isn’t it. I must be getting old “I think these milestones are nice but when you are actually still playing they don’t tend to sink in and mean that much. I’m sure when the years go by and I’m sat in the armchair they will all mean a lot more then, when I’m telling the kids and grandkids all the stories “Right now I’d like to be known as a part of a great Steelers team that won trophies, won multiple trophies. That’s the reason I left Cardiff, left home and came up north to Sheffield all those years ago. Sheffield was a place I could fulfill my hockey dreams and they were to win championships. Whilst I’ve achieved those goals I am still as ambitious today as I was the day I took the call off Dave Whistle and agreed to come to the Steelers” Phillips joined the Steelers in the summer of 2006 and is in his 8th season with the club having just signed a contract extension that will see him play in Sheffield for least another two seasons. “The Steelers today are as ambitious as they have ever been” continued Phillips “I think the club on and off the ice have improved and this is still an exciting place to play. We have had some great sides here, I’ve been lucky enough to captain great sides here and I get the feeling inside me that this years

by Michael Clarke It may have been the day after Halloween but many clubs were still getting a scare last Saturday, with shocks aplenty in the League Cup 2nd Round. Also there were a handful of teams involved in League action making it a busy start to November in the County Senior League.

League Cup 2nd Round We can only start at Wickersley School, where Wickersley of the Premier Division hosted Handsworth Parramore U21’s. Three second-half goals from Mason Gayle and Matt Morton gave the U21 outfit a 3-0 victory over 10 man Wickersley. Parkgate Reserves of Division Two took the scalp of the 2012/13 League Cup Winners Wombwell Main. Parkgate were 3-1 winners over their Premier Division opposition at a wind-swept Wombwell Main Cricket Club. Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley Reserves held Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves to a 2-2 draw over 120 minutes, but overcame their Premier Division opponents on penalties to reach the next stage of the competition. Denaby Main of Division Two carried their good league form into the cup as they beat Frecheville of the Premier Division 4-1 at Tickhill Square. It is the 7th time this season that Denaby have scored four or more goals in a game. Denaby United also beat opposition from an higher level, as they beat Silkstone United 2-1 at home, helped by goals from Paul Hemmingway and Thomas Harrison. The all-Premier Division tie between Swallownest Miners Welfare and Handsworth Parramore was all square at 3-3 after 120 minutes. However, Premier Division Champions Handsworth triumphed 5-4 on penalties. Last years’ U21 Cup Winners Swallownest Miners Welfare U21 were unlucky to be beaten 2-1 away against Swinton Athletic, who are currently in second place in the Premier Division. 2012/13 League Cup finalists High Green Villa were made to work hard for their progression into the next round, as they edged-out Sheffield Lane Top 3-2 at Thorncliffe Playing Fields. Last years’ losing finalists Houghton Main booked their place in the 3rd Round with an emphatic 10-1 victory over AFC Dronfield. Nicky Harper starred for Houghton Main with a stylish hat-trick. Goals from Gary Cotton and Daniel Robinson gave Oughtibridge WMFC a hard-fought 2-0 win over in-form Division One leaders Thorpe Hesley at

We have a bit of everything in terms of skill, speed, experience, grittiness and an incredible team spirit. From day one of training camp we all hit it off “The other thing we have this season is depth. I don’t think I have ever played in a Steelers side that had this amount of quality depth. The arrival a couple of weeks of Ben O’Connor showed just how serious the club was to improve and strengthen. We have options in all area’s” Fellow 500 club member Jason Hewitt said he was ready and waiting to welcome his Captain on board “Jonno is an incredible team mate and player” he said “both Tomo (Mark Thomas) and I only reached the 500 games before him because of the two horrific injuries he sustained. They would have finished off a lot of players but he came back stronger, both physically and mentally. He leads by example and he is an example to all players” Phillips will play his 500th Steelers game in Nottingham on Saturday before returning back to Sheffield on Sunday for a home game at ICE Sheffield against Fife Flyers (face off 6.00pm)

Rockingham Community Centre. Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves made it four wins in their last five games in all competitions; with a comfortable 3-0 away win over Millmoor Juniors U21’s. Penistone Church Reserves were 2-0 away winners against Sheffield Athletic. It is the second time in three weeks that Penistone have beaten Sheffield Athletic, after beating them 3-0 at home in the league. Goals from Kallum Nix and Sam Sweeney (pen) were enough to give Joker FC a 2-1 win over Wombwell Main U21’s at the Bill Chafer Youth Centre. South Kirkby Colliery put behind them their poor league form to register a 3-1 win over Maltby Main Reserves at Muglet Lane. Athersley Recreation Reserves followed up last weeks’ 3-1 league win over Millmoor Juniors, with another 3-1 win. This time it came away against Rotherham Town. Sheffield Bankers booked their place in the nest round with a 3-1 away win over Caribbean Sports of Division Two. Premier Division There was just one game in the Premier Division, with Jubilee Sports hosting Millmoor Juniors at Chaucer School. Goals from Sam Pigstone, Scott Bingley, Matt Turner and Jordan Livett gave Jubilee Sports a comprehensive 4-1 win, their first since mid-September. Division One Ecclesfield Red Rose’s incredible start to the season continued on Saturday, as they beat Kingstone United 4-1 at the Civil Service Ground. Harry O’Neill (pen), Daryl Wood, Jerome Grant and Kieron Goff were all on target for Ecclesfield, as they maintained their 100% league start. Ecclesfield are in fourth place, four points off the pace, but with four games spare. North Gawber Collier are directly above Ecclesfield in the table, after their 1-0 away win over Millmoor Juniors Reserves at the weekend. The win is North Gawber’s fifth on the spin in the league and they are also unbeaten. Division Two League leaders Byron House were held to a 2-2 draw at the Keepmoat Stadium by Bawtry Town, with all goals coming in the first half. Frecheville Reserves are climbing the table after a tricky start. They were 4-2 winners over Kiveton Park to stretch their unbeaten league run to five games.

ON FORM BORO BLITZ MILLERS ROTHERHAM UNITED slipped to their first defeat in six games as they fell victim to Middlesbrough’s first-half blitz. Strikes from Chelsea loanee Patrick Bamford and Dutch winger Yanic Wildschut in the opening twenty minutes put the Teessiders in charge and the Millers’ cause was not helped when substitute Jordan Bowery harshly saw red on the half-hour mark. Despite their numerical disadvantage, the Millers’ put in a spirited second-half display as sub Matt Derbyshire struck the woodwork but sub Lee Tomlin put the game to bed with a well-taken third near the end. Following their hard-fought draw at Brighton last time out, the Millers’ made two changes to their starting line-up for the visit of Aitor Karanka’s highflying outfit. The first change was an enforced one for Millers’ gaffer Steve Evans’ as Scottish international Kirk Broadfoot replaced Joe Skarz, who was ruled out after picking up his fifth booking of the season at the Amex. Jonson Clarke-Harris was also recalled to the Millers’ strikeforce as Bowery had to settle for a place on the substitutes’ bench with Paul Taylor employed in a more withdrawn midfield role. The Millers’ were quick out of the blocks and following a fast-flowing move from kick-off, Ben Pringle swung an instinctive centre which was slightly too high for Clarke-Harris, as his header screwed harmlessly wide of the target. Despite the home side’s strong start, the visitors’ stunned the Millers’ faithful by breaking the deadlock with their first foray of note. There looked little danger when a hopeful ball into the box saw Paul Green well-stationed on the edge of the box but the Irish midfielder seemingly lost his footing as he looked to clear and Bamford pounced on the loose ball to strike a left-footed drive which arched away from the outstretched hand of Adam Collin, who seemed to parry the ball en-route to goal as it found the bottom corner. The home side responded positively to the setback and George Friend was forced to plant Pringle’s incisive corner behind and in the next phase of play, Taylor fired a deep corner which saw Broadfoot rise

CURTIS IS THE MAIN MAN AS ROVERS RETURN WITH THE POINTS Curtis Main scored a brilliant second half goal to give Rovers all three-points against Bradford. The hosts led 1-0 at half time, thanks to a brilliant individual effort from Jon Stead. However, Reece Wabara equalised for Rovers before Main netted the winner, in a second half spell that changed the match. A ferocious start to the match from both sides saw plenty of early tackles, as expected in a Derby match. Rovers had the better of the opening stages and twice had chances. First Curtis Main headed at Jordan Pickford but couldn’t get enough power to trouble the keeper. Then Richie Wellens hit an effort with his left foot, which was pushed away from goal and just away from the on rushing Kyle Bennett. After that the Banatams had the better of the first half, which saw Sam Johnstone forced into action much more often than he would have liked. First he saved a Filipe Morais effort, which looked certain to be going in. Cedric Evina was stretched off after 34 minutes and was replaced by Liam Wakfield, which saw Reece Wabara switch to left back. Bradford kept attacking the Rovers defence, and Johnstone made another brilliant save, when McCullough almost headed into his own goal. Jon Stead then found half a yard of space on the edge of the Rovers penalty area and smashed his effort into the top corner, to give his side a deserved lead.

highest but he couldn’t control his header as it blazed over the bar. Despite Rotherham’s best efforts, the visitors’ took a stranglehold on the clash by doubling their lead on 19 minutes. Following promptings in and around the home box with former Millers’ loanee Grant Leadbitter one of the orchestrators’, Wildschut showed fleet of foot to jink past the attentions of his marker on the edge of the box before firing an emphatic shot which arrowed into the roof of the net giving Collin no chance. The Millers’ miserable start to the game took another cruel twist when Alex Revell was helped down the tunnel after he had lengthy treatment following an awkward fall as Bowery entered the fray for the exOrient frontman. However, Bowery’s participation in the clash lasted only a matter of minutes in an incident which brought a chorus of boos from the home faithful. Following some neat passing from the home side, Bowery was adjudged harshly to have nudged over a retreating defender as he looked to race down the right flank as the assistant referee flagged for a foul. With play continuing, Friend got his body between Bowery and the ball and the ex-Villa striker appeared to bring down his foot on the visiting defender and following consultation between the referee and the linesman, Mike Russell had no hesitation in brandishing the red card. Moments later, Middlesbrough wasted two giltedged opportunities to effectively seal the deal when fine interplay involving Bamford and Wildschut saw the latter fizz an incisive centre which saw Kike ghost infront of his marker before blasting over with the goal at his mercy before the Spanish striker had his head in his hands again moments later when another rampaging run by Wildschut had the home defence at sixes and sevens before the bell fell kindly for him, but he again fluffed his lines with a rash strike. The Millers’ were struggling to clear their heads and Friend flashed a right-footed effort wide of the target before Collin was scrambling across goal nervously as Leadbitter’s low drive took a wicked deflection off Green but the ball curled narrowly wide of the home goal. Following the restart, Evans’ threw caution to the wind by bringing Derbyshire into the fray to partner Clarke-Harris in a front-two while ‘Boro old boy Richie Smallwood was given a chance to impress against his former employers. The Millers’ started the half strongly and they

were almost rewarded for their efforts when Lee Frecklington shrugged off the attentions of Adam Clayton before drilling a low effort which had Dimitrios Konstantopoulos at full stretch before Clarke-Harris was narrowly off target in the next phase of play. At the other end, Kike was having a personal duel with Collin as he firstly smashed a fierce effort which was parried by the ex-Carlisle ‘keeper before he waltzed past Craig Morgan moments later to drill a left-footed effort from the edge of the box which was smothered by the home stopper.

Bradford sensed a chance to add a second before half time, but a double save from Johnstone kept it at 1-0, going into the break. Rovers came out at the second half trying to get back into the match as soon as possible and Luke McCullough had a golden opportunity with a header from a few yards out, but put it over the bar. The introduction of Harry Forrester seemed to change the whole emphasis of Rovers going forward. On 59 minutes, a fantastic cross from Liam Wakefield picked out his fellow full back and the back post and Wabara finished neatly to equalise for his side. The goal gave Rovers the momentum and ten minutes later Main netted the winner, after being slipped in by Richie Wellens. Rovers rested on what they had for the final 20 minutes and Bradford tested the defence with cross after cross, but all the hard work from Johnstone had been done in the first half and despite a few punches he wasn’t tested too often. All of the Rovers players dug in to hold on to all three points, and give manager Paul Dickov the best of birthday presents.

Moments later, the breakdown of a visitors’ attack saw Green yellow-carded for a foul in the build-up before Rotherham failed to clear decisively moments later and as the ball pinged around the box, Daniel Ayala instinctively stabbed goalwards but fortunately for the Millers, the ball whistled past the upright. Just past the hour mark, Widschut again terrorised the home defence with a marauding run and cross which narrowly evaded the outstretched foot of Bamford before Clarke-Harris became the next to see yellow for upending Friend in full flow. The visitors’ were sniffing blood and after some neat interplay, Adam Reach ghosted past the attentions of Frazer Richardson to drill a low effort which was arrowing towards the bottom corner of the goal but Kari Arnason was well-positioned to snuff out the danger. With quarter an hour to go, Arnason’s bullet throw caused havoc in the visitors’ defence before Wildschut again got behind the Millers’ rearguard to plant a tantalising cross which saw sub Jelle Vossen strike wide when he should have done better. With time running out, the Millers’ knew it wasn’t going to be their day when a fortunate ricochet fell invitingly for Derbyshire, who showed the visitors’ defence a clean pair of heels but with just Konstantopoulos to beat, he gave the Greek ‘keeper the eyes as he tried to thread the ball in at the near post but his effort smashed the outside of the upright. The visitors’ capped a professional display in the latter stages when fine interplay paved the way for sub Tomlin to jink his way past a number of home defenders’ on the edge of the box before drilling a low effort which was threaded through the legs of a home defender and with Collin caught off-balance, the ball rolled tantalisingly into the heart of the Millers’ goal.

Paul Dickov is not taking his FA Cup round 1 opponents, Weston Super Mare, lightly. Dickov’s Rovers side will travel to Woodspring Stadium on November 8th and the Scot admits he is keeping tabs on the Conference South outfit in preparation. “We’ve got someone going to Concord Rangers to do a match report,” said Dickov. “It’s the magic of the FA Cup and everyone’s looking for an upset, it’s a trophy that’s close to me. “We drew Liverpool when I was at Oldham so I know what a good cup run can do for the town – including the financial aspects as well – so we’ll be going for the third round.” Dickov was not able to replicate his exploits with the Latics when, last season, Rovers crashed out at the third round stage to Stevenage and the Rovers boss highlighted the potential banana skin. “I’ve seen their manager coming on about giant killing so we know we’ve got to be on it,” he said. “We’ve got to go down and be professional and get the job done. “We spoke about having runs in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and, in particular the Capital One Cup, and we’ve done that and the FA cup is no different this year.”

BLADES NEWS2014/15 BIGGEST CROWD OF SEASON WATCHES LOCAL DERBY DEFEAT The Blades suffered a first defeat in seven matches in front of Bramall Lane’s biggest crowd of the season. A total of 24,495 were inside the Lane but Sam Winnall’s second half header decided this South Yorkshire derby. There were no late heroics from Nigel Clough’s side on this occasion as Danny Wilson marked his return to S2 with a victory. Clough made four changes for the visit of Barnsley. McCarthy, Wallace, Campbell-Ryce and Baxter all returned to the starting line-up. McGahey, Reed and McNulty dropped to the bench, whilst Davies missed out. Kicking towards the Kop in the first period, the early action was fast and furious, both teams won a corner inside the opening three minutes, whilst Murphy was actively putting Barnsley on the back foot. He had already supplied a cross which Scougall and Baxter almost got on the end of and then the Scottish winger showed too much pace for Cranie - from the result free-kick, Turnbull had to claw away a header from Alcock.

Expectedly, the frantic action abated, although chances were created at both ends. Winnall turned the ball over the crossbar after Dudgeon evaded CampbellRyce and Alcock to deliver a cross, whilst at the other end Baxter and Harris linked up at pace to present a chance for Wallace but Dudgeon managed to get a deflection on the shot. Soon after, on 20 minutes, Baxter’s quick free-kick found Murphy but his shot lacked power. As half-time approached the chances did begin to dry up, although Murphy and Barnsley’s Berry tried their luck from distance and a good move between Campbell-Ryce and Baxter almost made a chance for Wallace. Both managers resisted the urge to make changes at the interval and despite the first five minutes of the second half being end-to-end, goalscoring opportunities were not forthcoming. A Harris sidefoot was blocked from CampbellRyce’s cross before Barnsley grabbed the initiative on 56 minutes. Cole’s shot was pushed around a post by

Howard but from the resulting Bailey corner, WINNALL rose highest to head home from six yards. A mix-up between Campbell-Ryce and Alcock almost presented Winnall with another soon after. Clough’s response was to throw on McNulty, whilst long-range efforts from Harris and Murphy were off target. United were now forcing the issue with Baxter seeing a lot of the ball. On 72 minutes he provided the free-kick which saw an unmarked McNulty head over. Persistent timewasting from goalkeeper Turnbull saw him booked on 78 minutes and Flynn was United’s second change, replacing Campbell-Ryce. A Harris cross caused panic in the Barnsley box but Turnbull was off his line quickly to deny Scougall. Porter was the last change but United’s attacks were not producing chances, with the last ball going astray. Four added minutes was announced just as Flynn weakly shot at Turnbull. McCarthy was thrown forward as an auxiliary striker but the last chance to level was a Harris free-kick which Turnbull repelled. Blades: Howard, Alcock, Harris, Wallace (McNulty 59), Doyle, Murphy, Scougall, Baxter (Porter 85), McEveley, CampbellRyce (Flynn 81), McCarthy. Unused: Basham, McGahey, Reed, Turner. CLOUGH FRUSTRATED BY BARNSLEY RESULT

Blades boss Nigel Clough admitted he was ‘frustrated’ following Saturday’s narrow South Yorkshire derby defeat at the hand of Barnsley at Bramall Lane, despite being pleased with many apsects of United’s display. Looking back after Sam Winnall’s header just before the hour settled the contest in front of a crowd nearing 25,000, Clough remarked: “It was a very good performance again for long spells, we have created a lot of chances and half chances, but we switch off from a corner and get punished. “Games are often decided on fine margins, especially the higher you go or is local derbies and that proved to be the case in this one unfortunately. “Their goalkeeper made a fantastic save from Craig Alcock’s header in the first-half, but then in the second-half it is a free header in each box, Winnall scores his and McNultly heads over the bar.” The Gaffer added: “We got plenty of the ball to our wingers, but there weren’t at their best on the day and when they did produce balls into the box we didn’t do enough to get on the end of them. “We hate losing at home but we can’t get too upset, we have dominated

the game and Mark (Howard) has hardly had anything to do. “Barnsley deserve some credit, they frustrated us at times and managed to nick a goal from a set-

piece at the other end, we have been in that position before and for them it was a job well done, for us it just didn’t quite happen and that is frustrating.”

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

OWLS NEWS2014/15 DRENTHE STUNNER NO ENOUGH FOR ALL THREE POINTS The Owls and Charlton shared the points at The Valley on Saturday. Wednesday started brightly in South East London and took the lead through Royston Drenthe, who was a thorn in the side of the Addicks from the first whistle. Charlton, though, hit back after the break to preserve their unbeaten home record. Returning striker Igor Vetokele finished from close range to ensure a share of the spoils. Handed his first start for the Owls, Drenthe was a livewire in the opening ten minutes. The winger sent in two dangerous deliveries from the right; first a corner that Joe Mattock diverted just wide and a second that had a fraction too much pace for Atdhe Nuhiu. There was little to trouble Keiren Westwood in the early throes, save a George Tucudean low shot and a Jordan Cousins header that flew over the bar. Drenthe was in the mood at The Valley and the loanee almost registered the game’s first goal on 13 minutes after cutting

inside and drilling just wide of the far post. But there was simply no stopping the ex-Real Madrid man, who duly bagged his first Owls goal just before the half hour mark. Drenthe turned sharply on the halfway line and motored upfield before neatly tucking home a powerful strike past Stephen Henderson. Wednesday almost caught Charlton on the break in first half stoppage time, with Nuhiu leading the charge before feeding Chris Maguire who dragged wide. The first clear cut chance of the second period fell the way of the visitors as Maguire’s teasing centre fizzed dangerously across the face of goal, just beyond Nuhiu in the

middle. As Charlton sought a way back in the game, the hosts began to turn the screw and put Wednesday on the back foot. Chris Solly thumped inches over the bar after a sustained period of pressure and Westwood was at full stretch to tip over the bar from Tucudean’s volley. The Addicks then found their leveller through returning striker Vetokele who was well placed in the middle to tap home from Rhoys Wiggins’ low centre. Wednesday had claims for a penalty turned down by the referee when Nuhiu was challenged by Tal Ben Haim in the area. At the other end, Vetokele was looking a threat for the Addicks and put wide following a breakaway and Lawrie Wilson saw his late strike ruled out for offside at the last as the sides shared the spoils.

TOM LEES: ‘WE MUST KILL OFF GAMES’

Owls defender Tom Lees was left disappointed following the 1-1 draw with Charlton on Saturday. Wednesday edged in front through dangerman Royston Drenthe but were pegged back after the interval. Given the Owls’ first half dominance, Lees feels the Owls let two points slip at The Valley, where Charlton remain undefeated. He told swfc.co.uk: “I think in the first half we could have been three or four up and that’s what we need to do; kill off

games when we are in front. Drenthe celebrates his goal at Charlton “We didn’t seem to do that and going in 1-0 up at half time gave them a chance to come out stronger after a roasting at half time. “That’s what they did and second half I thought we were disappointing. For me, it’s two points dropped.” Wednesday have little time to let the dust settle on The Valley point and face a huge test at Hillsborough on Tuesday with Championship form

side Bournemouth in town. “We have to capitalise when we are on top,” Lees continued. “So many times you see it in football where you miss chances and know they will come back to bite you. “When you think of all the hard work that goes into getting three points from three draws, you can do that in one day. “But we have only been beaten in the league three times which is positive and now we have two big games at home coming up.”

DIELNA ADAPTING TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP

Claude Dielna has told swfc.co.uk he is enjoying his football with the Owls despite the difficult transition from the French Ligue 1 to the Championship. The powerful defender has said the intensity and pace of the Championship is much greater but the 26-yearold is relishing the challenge and feels he is adapting well. He said: “I’m very happy here and the fans are just amazing. “I think I am starting to find my level because I had a long period

without games but now I feel good and I hope the next game I play, I can give my best. “The championship is a hard league, it’s not the same in Ligue 1 in France, it’s very difficult, it’s quick but before I came here I knew this.” With Joe Mattock ruled out of action for the immediate future with an ankle injury, Dielna may well be called upon in the coming weeks, starting tomorrow as Wednesday face Bournemouth. Dielna stepped in at left back for the suspended Mattock last time out at Hillsborough as the Owls drew 0-0 with Norwich. Ahead of Tuesday’s clash with the Cherries, he added: “For Joe, I wish him well because he has been playing well in the team. “But this is part of football and if the coach needs me, I’m here. If I don’t play, then I work hard every day in training to get in the team.”
