SWITCH TO BE FLICKED ON CITY’S SPECTACULAR CHRISTMAS Families are invited to pack out the Peace Gardens later this month as Sheffield is transformed into a winter wonderland for the city’s annual Christmas light switchon. A full programme of entertainment will begin from 2pm on Sunday, November 23, before the big switch itself is flicked at 5.30pm in the Peace Gardens. Musicians, choirs and

pantomime performers starring in this year’s production of “Dick Whittington” at the Lyceum Theatre will be entertaining crowds around the city centre throughout the afternoon. Meanwhile, other family-friendly attractions will include an elf trail, meet-andgreets with film and television characters, and the chance to see vehicles from the National Emergency

Museum. Councillor Isobel Bowler, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “I hope that families will come into the city centre to enjoy our Christmas light switch on. “The theme this year is a traditional Christmas, with a focus on the Christmas tree in front of the Town Hall. The city centre will be illuminated to add some

sparkle through to New Year. “The Christmas Market will also be open, giving opportunities to buy that unusual gift and also festive food and drink.” This year’s Christmas market will open on Friday, 14 November, housed in wooden cabins in the Peace Gardens and stretching the length of Fargate. As well as independent traders selling a variety of gifts, jewellery, crafts and

fresh produce, there will be refreshment stalls selling hot food and drinks. The market runs from 10am to 6pm daily throughout November. In December, the market will also be open until 8pm each Wednesday. Children are also sure to be enchanted by the all-new for Sheffield Christmas display in the Moor Market, more details on which will be available soon.

INTO TOP GEAR

Top Gear Live, in association with Live Nation, announced today that it will embark on its first ever UK-wide arena tour with the presenters set to perform their latest and greatest stunts in arenas up and down the country. The Tour stops off at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield for 3 performances on Friday 5th & Saturday 6th June 2015. Tickets go on sale 9am Friday 14th November. Fronted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, Top Gear Live brings to life the massively popular BBC 2 TV programme. Featuring breath-taking stunts, some of the world’s most incredible cars and the usual calamitous mucking about, the Top Gear Live show has become a global phenomenon having played to almost 2 million fans in 22 countries. Aside from a short run of sell-out shows in Glasgow earlier this year, these will be the boys’ first UK performances since 2012. The action-packed 90-minute arena show will include exclusive, never before seen sequences as well as some firm fan favourites from their last 10 years of international touring. Top Gear fans can expect to see lots of fire, tyre smoke, some ridiculous stunts and a healthy dose of competitive spirit between Jeremy, Richard and James. “Our Top Gear Live UK Arena tour is coming and I literally cannot wait. We’ll have supercars, stunts, explosions and The Stig. Come and see Top Gear, but without the editing. What could possibly go wrong?” said Clarkson. Speaking of the tour, James May said: "In the past, we've taken Top Gear Live all over the world, but this year we're taking it to Newcastle, Liverpool, Belfast, Sheffield and London. That way we'll remember how lucky

we are to live in Britain.” Richard Hammond added "It’s all very exciting, taking our show on a tour of the UK. I suggested to the other two that we travelled around in a lovely old bus or something but they weren’t keen. I think most of their answers ended in ‘off”. In just the past 12 months Top Gear Live has toured the world with spectacular shows in Moscow, St Petersburg, Glasgow, Budapest, Zagreb, Turin, Prague, Sydney, Barbados and Durban. Tickets for the Top Gear Live show at Motorpoint Arena Sheffield will go on general sale Friday 14th November 2014, priced £38.50, £49.50 & £60.50 (including booking fee) when purchased through the Arena ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56 & online through at www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk. Tickets will be priced £36.75, £47.25 & £57.75 (including booking fee) when purchased in person from the venue box office.

ALBERT SNODGRASS

I asked my son what he wants me to get him for Christmas. He said, “Google Glasses!” I said, “OK, and I know what sodding glasses are.” A lion, a witch and a wardrobe walk into a bar. The barman says, “I’m serving Narnia!” Why did the blind man cross the road? Because his Labrador was chasing a cat. My boss told me that there is no such thing as problems, only opportunities. I said, “That’s great. Well I have a serious drinking opportunity.” Not to brag or anything, but I got the high score on my bathroom scale today. The creator of the inappropriate innuendo has died. He wanted his funeral to be an appropriate send off. So I decided to give him one. Towards the end of the night my date asked me for a piece of chewing gum. “You can have a bit of mine,” I smiled, placing the already chewed gum in her mouth. “This tastes funny,” she said, screwing up her face. “I’m not surprised,” I replied. “The tables at the restaurant were filthy.”

WHERE ARE THE “MISSING MILLION?” NOW OPEN More than a million people over 50 have been involuntarily pushed out of the workplace and harnessing the potential of this ‘missing million’ could lead to an £88 billion boost to UK GDP, according to a new report published today by PRIME, now part of the charity Business in the Community. There are currently 3.3 million economically inactive people aged between 50 and 64 in the UK and the over 50s have a higher rate of long term unemployment than any other age group*. The report: ‘The missing million: illuminating the employment challenges of the over 50s’ was produced in collaboration with The International Longevity Centre (ILC) and will be launched in the presence of HRH The Prince of Wales at PwC, London on 23 October. The report explores the employment challenges facing older workers and calls for urgent action from policy makers and employers to ensure people over 50 remain in the labour market. It found that up to 1.5 million people aged 50-69 ‘involuntarily’ left employment over the last eight years due to a combination of redundancy, ill health or ‘forced’ early retirement and of these, 1.1 million people would be willing to work. Furthermore, if the employment rate of this 50-64 age group matched that of the 35-49 age group, this would boost UK GDP by £88 billion (5.6%). Stephen Howard, Chief Executive of Business in the Community, said: “There are a significant number of over 50s who would be willing to work if the right opportunity arose but we are failing to harness their potential. We need to successfully address the needs of this missing million, who have been forced out of work prematurely. By doing so, we will not only help individuals achieve a financially secure, meaningful and productive future, but also retain valuable knowledge, skills and experience for the

benefit of the economy, businesses and communities.” Other key findings include: • The UK’s population is ageing and unless measures are taken to support working longer, the size of the UK’s workforce is likely to flat-line, projected to increase by just 4.5% over the next 20 years by comparison to an 18.2% rise over the last two decades • There are 13.5 million job vacancies, which need to be filled over the next ten years. Only seven million young people are projected to leave school and college over that time and we run the risk of running out of workers and suffering skills shortages if we fail to harness the potential of the older workers • A higher proportion of older workers does not “crowd out” the labour market for younger workers but in-fact increases employment opportunities for them. Where local authorities do well with employing older workers they also do well in terms of employing younger workers. • Leaving the workforce causes older people to forgo a number of years’ worth of earnings and pension contributions and could contribute to their worsening health and wellbeing. This potentially leads to more public spending on areas such as health care and adult social care • Employers can do much more to support flexible working and retraining for older workers and therefore support them to stay in the labour market • Compared to other countries, the UK falls somewhere in the middle with regards to the employment prospects for older workers but falls behind the Nordic countries, in particular Sweden, whose employment rates are over 70% for the over 50s. PRIME was founded by HRH The Prince of Wales in response to the letters he was receiving from mature people desperate to find work, but unable to find anyone to employ them – because of their age. Business in the Community believes that

business has a responsibility to create a sustainable economy and vibrant local communities. The report makes a number of recommendations for business to reduce the likelihood of this group leaving the labour market too early, such as: • Encourage good health in the workforce and develop tailored health based support packages for the over 50s • Ensure older people receive ongoing training and support and opportunities to engage with new technologies; • Provide a full range of progressive flexible options to meet the needs of older workers including compressed working, job share, self-rostering, working from home and split shifts. Alongside PRIME’s existing work on enterprise, Business in the Community is committed to a new strand of work developing innovative workplace solutions to extending working lives and making the most of intergenerational workplaces. The report also contains measures for the Government to take on-board and in particular, calls on the Department for Work and Pensions to continue their work on the Fuller Working Lives framework. Baroness Greengross, ILC-UK Chief Executive said: “The case for working longer has never been stronger. Extending working lives is essential for delivering economic growth, maintaining a sustainable and vibrant business sector and harnessing the potential and capacity of the older worker. We have found that older workers aren’t always motivated by money alone. Jobs have to be enjoyable. To maximise the economic benefit of older workers in an ageing society we therefore need to make jobs more relevant satisfying and fun for older people. But we also have to address the health challenges of ageing. The Health and Work Service needs to be targeted and tailored to the health needs of the over 50s.”

NHS Sheffield CCG is supporting the NHS Flu campaign and encouraging those who are eligible for the free flu vaccination to take up the offer. The flu vaccine is offered free of charge to people who are at risk of developing serious complications if they get flu, such as people with heart and kidney disease, asthma and diabetes, the over 65s and pregnant women. This year children aged 2-4 are also being offered a free nasal flu vaccination. This is to protect them

against flu and help to reduce its spread to those around them. Flu occurs every year, usually in the winter, and over time protection from the injected flu vaccine gradually decreases and flu strains often change. This is why new flu vaccines are produced each year and people are strongly advised to have the flu jab every year. People eligible for the free flu vaccine should be contacted by their GP to arrange their vaccination.

THE RETURN OF QUEEN

Queen + Adam Lambert this week announced they have added three further UK arena shows, as part of their 2015 European tour, including a date at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield on Friday 27th February 2015. Tickets are now on general sale. Since the UK and European tour went on sale last month, demand for tickets has been phenomenal. Brian May says of the extra shows: “Just to show we actually DO listen!!! There was a lot of demand for these extra dates, and this will make a great climax to the tour.” This news comes as Queen + Adam Lambert are confirmed to perform live on ITV’s The X Factor on 30 November. Last week they were awarded Band

of the Year at the 10th annual Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards in Los Angeles. In addition, ITV will broadcast The Nation’s Favourite Queen Song, tonight at 9pm. The show uncovers the origins of Queen’s best-loved tunes and tells the stories behind the band’s bold and inventive music videos. Queen Forever, a new compilation album including previously unreleased material recorded with Freddie Mercury, was released yesterday, 10th November. Meanwhile, Adam Lambert is currently in the final stages of writing and recording his third album, ready for release next year. The 2015 tour comes two years after May, Taylor and Lambert last performed a short tour

together of the UK and Europe, this lengthier outing will see Queen + Adam Lambert perform 25 shows in 10 countries. Earlier this year, Queen + Adam Lambert’s World tour played to sold-out audiences across North America, Australia, New Zealand, with outdoor festival stops in Korea and Japan. The shows received glowing reviews from fans and critics alike: Queen first teamed up with Adam Lambert in 2009 to perform the band’s rock anthem “We Are the Champions” on “American Idol’s” season’s eight finale. Lambert and Queen partnered again in 2011 at the MTV European Music Awards in Belfast. In the summer of 2012 they performed their first live concerts together with three sold-

out shows in the UK at London’s Hammersmith Apollo as well as concert appearances in Russia, Ukraine and Poland. A further one-off performance together at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas last September at which they effectively stole the show triggered a conversation between Adam, Roger and Brian to take the show on the road. Hollywood Reporter exclaimed, “Adam Lambert, Queen bring down the iHeart house. With the perfect mix of rock attitude mixed with style, theatricality, sex appeal and impressive vocal gymnastics, [Lambert] took the band’s music to new heights.”

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

This weekend Radio Nightingale provided two services to mark Remembrance Sunday. The programmes started with our now annual outside broadcast of the live service from the Rotherham Minster. My position once again was in the studio taking in the broadcasts from the Minster and Cenotaph whilst Sarah took to the streets to provide them. It was a cold but sunny day for the people of Rotherham to gather once more to show their respect for the hundreds of thousands of servicemen and women who have given their lives in the many conflicts after and including the First World War. The service was as always led by the Vicar of Rotherham, Canon David Bliss. Following the traditional Remembrance Service, the parade re-assembled on the High Street to march to the Clifton Park Cenotaph lead by South Yorkshire Police Band to arrive in plenty of time for the silence at 11.00am. Straight after the Minster and Cenotaph services, we

joined the regular programme from the Hospital Chaplaincy team as they conducted their own Remembrance Service at the Rotherham General Hospital. Pictures from the Remembrance Service is available on our Facebook page. On Friday this week, International Football comes to Radio Nightingale as we will be providing commentary of the international friendly game between England and Italy U19’s which is to be played at the New York Stadium. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw, Hospedia and online. TAKE THREE Preview: Take That 1-2/06/15, Motorpoint Arena Sheffield By Kt Evans

Ok ok so we know it seems slightly bizarre to be talking about mid 2015 when we haven’t even ploughed through this winter yet (please, please don’t remind us) however the recent announcement of a cracking two date show at the Motorpoint Arena next June got us all at M-Live exceptionally excited indeed…Take That. Tickets are on sale this Thursday (13th) and these performances are expected to sell out in a matter of minutes, so if you don’t want to miss out, you better be on your toes. It would be an exceptionally difficult task to meet somebody who doesn’t like at least one Take That song. With a repertoire ranging back from the very early 90’s way up to the present day, the newly announcement three piece, now consisting of Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald are relatable to pretty much anybody who has ever turned on the car radio. With hits ‘Never Forget,’ ‘Everything Changes,’ ‘Shine’ and ‘Patience,’ Take That are masters of producing hit after hit, all guaranteed to appear in the top ten UK singles charts. The group formed in 1990 as a five piece (including the recently resigned Jason Orange along with the infamous Robbie Williams) and released their first album ‘Take That & Party’ through BMG records in August 1992. With Gary Barlow the primary songwriter, many of his previously written material appeared on their debut to include ‘A Million Love Songs,’ ‘Give Good Feeling’ and ‘Why Can’t I Wake Up With You?’ The album peaked at number two in the UK charts and staying in the Top 75 for 73 weeks. Since then, it has been named two times platinum, selling 870,000+ copies. Following on from this, Take that have been on the steepest rollercoaster known within the mu-

Although influences have been drawn to the likes of Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines and Thin Lizzy, The Kooks still remain to shower their own material with an individual take. The group hit the mainstream in 2005 with the release of their debut album ‘Inside In / Inside Out,’ undeniably one of the most important records of the last decade. With hits ‘She Moves In Her Own Way,’ ‘Ooh La’ and crowd favourite ‘Naïve,’ this twelve track release whole heartedly paved the future for The Kooks. And it worked…four albums later, a slight musical style shift to a more funk infused repertoire and The Kooks are back with their latest release ‘Listen,’ released on 8th September 2014. With sterling reviews from fans and critics alike, the album went straight into the UK charts at number 16 and received overall ratings of 3.5 out of 5. With a healthy amount of time put into the production of the album, sections of gospel, jazz and R&B are all work together to build an album The Kooks are exceptionally proud of. Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

My big news this week is that I have decided that the time has come to amicably part ways with my sponsor Marukyu Europe Ltd. After 18 months of promoting the company via social media platforms, which has seen Facebook ‘likes’ (a true business growth indicator!) rise from a measly 1,980, to well over 17,000, and some expansive twitter growth, in addition to magazine features and web content, I feel I’ve done what was asked of me and now is the time to seek a new challenge. I would like to place on record my thanks to CEO John Loftus, CFO Allan Christopher, Masazumi Miyazawa, dynamic sales duo Wendy and Zoe Perry, Roy Marlow and backroom staff led by Darren Linnell for all their support during my time with the company, and it’s genuinely been an absolute pleasure to put Marukyu on my CV! So, where do I go from here? I have nothing planned, no irons in the fire, so I guess I’ll just go fishing and see what happens next. I’ve still got to invest time in this column, blogs and various magazine commitments, but until something turns up, I’m going to enjoy some ‘me’ fishing! This last period of support has seen me take part in the British National Lure Angling Championship Final at Chew after qualifying in Wigan on the Leeds Liverpool canal, catch a string of personal bests, and learn an awful lot more about exactly what a company needs from its team of anglers. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved being a so called sponsored angler for the last three or four years and as I’ve sat fishing this week, I’ve often felt like I should be doing

something such as taking images, preparing or arranging product to be seen by others, talking to anglers on the bank or planning the next weeks Facebook campaign, so it has been nice to just sit with a paperback and enjoy the countryside... but I miss it already! I love meeting people on the bank, but sometimes, I have to admit I’d rather not run into certain individuals.... I went out this week and compiled a video venue review at a Staffordshire fishery for Angler’s Mail magazine which involves putting together around two minutes of commentary and images for their Youtube TV channel. I’d nearly finished when a lovely old lady walked across in front of the camera, stared intently at the lens, and then asked if I was filming. I replied that I was, but it was only a short piece, and I could reshoot the video after her interruption. Nonplussed, I waited for her to move off, composed myself and began again. You’ve guessed it; within two minutes, she walked back the other way, once again stared into the camera and asked if I’d finished filming yet. Now exasperated, I once more explained that I hadn’t, and would have to do it yet again... at that point, she suggested I hurry up then before someone walked in front of the camera! Argh!!!

STEELERS NEWS A horrible night for the Sheffield Steelers in Nottingham on Saturday, a 7-2 defeat and lack-luster performance. Ben O’Connor scored his first Steelers goal and had an assist on Tyler Mosienko’s opening goal of the night for Gerad Adams side, otherwise it was a disappointing evening from start to finish. The Panthers were quickly on the scoreboard. With Cullen Eddy off on an early boarding penalty David Clarke beat Frank Doyle from 12 feet at just 2.46 - a minute later Cody Wild had doubled Nottingham’s lead. As bad as the first period was the middle session looked a lot better, especially early on when Ben O’Connor pulled some amazing moves to feed Tyler Mosienk for the Steelers first goal at 26.00 The Steelers were back in the game and had a chance to level when first Scimidt and then goalie Modlg took penalties to give Sheffield a

The Steelers failed to capitalise on the 2 man advantage and then suffered more as the Panthers broke when back to full strength to extend their lead once again through Bruce Graham (3-1) There was light at the end of the tunnel when Boxill went for interference at the end of the second period giving the Steelers a power-play opportunity at the start of the third session. Ben O’Connor put a shot through traffic that found the top corner and the Sheffield were once again back in the game (3-2) Steelers failed to follow up with sustained pressure and quickly went 4-2 down 2 minutes later with Graham’s 2nd. The game ebbed and flowed for the next period before a devastating Panthers spell between 50.13 and 56.21 with Nottingham scoring three times without reply through Lachowicz and a brace from Chris Lawrence for a final score of Nottingham Panthers 7-2 STEELERS.

DERBY ENDS IN STALEMATE IT was honours even in the South Yorkshire derby as Rotherham United earned a hard-fought goalless draw at rivals Sheffield Wednesday. In a lacklustre first-half, Paul Green wasted the chance of the first period as he planted a point-blank header wide of the target before both sides’ upped the tempo in the second half as Lee Frecklington had a goal chalked off for offside before the Millers withstood a late rally by the home side to earn their first point in three games. Following their back-to-back defeats at the hands of Middlesbrough and Reading respectively, the Millers made two changes to their starting line-up for the short hop to Hillsborough. Scottish international Kirk Broadfoot was recalled to the heart of the Millers’ rearguard as Kari Arnason was ruled out because of a toe injury he sustained against the Royals in midweek. Ipswich loanee Paul Taylor was also given an opportunity to impress in the visitors’ engine room as Matt Derbyshire had to be content with a berth on the substitutes’ bench. The home side were quick out of the blocks and they had the first sight of goal when a long diagonal pass saw one-time Millers target Stevie May cut inside before firing a tantalising centre which narrowly evaded the home runners. Moments later, Wednesday attacked with menace and Gary Taylor-Fletcher got a yard on Broadfoot, who unceremoniously hacked down the Leicester loanee and with referee Nigel Miller playing advantage, Jacques Maghoma skipped the byline before firing a cross-cum-shot which stung the palms of ‘keeper Adam Collin. The incident saw Broadfoot incur the wrath of the referee which showed him the yellow card once play had been curtailed. The Millers gradually got a foothold in the clash and Joe Skarz floated a delicate cross which saw Alex Revell cleverly flick-on into the advancing run of Frecklington, who could only toe-poke the ball harmlessly over the bar from the edge of the box. Just before the quarter hour, the home side looked to be heading into a cul-de-sac until Maghoma threaded a cross into the danger area and Taylor-Fletcher

DICKOV DELIBERATES

With no football at the weekend, Paul Dickov gave his thoughts on various aspects within the club: Cedric Evina… “We’ve had him scanned and he’s got damage to his medial ligament and he’s got a tiny stress fracture to the inside of his knee too. It will be a minimum of four weeks but it’s not too bad considering how young and fit Cedric is.” Sam Johnstone… “There’s a bit of work that we’ve done and phone calls made so we’re very grateful to Gareth Southgate who we had a long conversation with the other day and he’s kindly allowed Sam to stay with us and play in the Sheffield United game.” Luke McCullough… “We also spoke with Michael O’Neill of Northern Ireland and he’s allowed Luke [McCullough] to come back as quick as possible. Whether it will be in time to start the game or not, we don’t know but we’re hoping both will be available. Cup eligibility… “Andy Butler is free to play in the cup games, as will Enda [Stevens] and

almost caught the Rotherham rearguard napping as he nipped infront of his marker to deftly flick the ball towards goal but to the visitors’ relief it whistled past the upright. Moments later, May left Broadfoot in his wake before racing towards goal but he fluffed his lines when he dragged a tame effort across the face of goal before Rotherham missed a gilt-edged chance to break the deadlock when following a period of pressure from the visitors, Ben Pringle swung a tantalising inswinging corner which saw Green ghost in unnoticed but despite having the goal at his mercy, his point-blank header blazed wide of the target. At the other end, Chris Maguire tried his luck from distance but his rising effort fizzed narrowly over the bar before Frecklington was bundled over by Jeremy Helan near the corner flag giving the Millers another inviting set-piece. With Pringle again the architect, his pinpoint delivery saw Keiren Westwood flap at thin air and Frecklington almost took advantage but his header ballooned over the bar. Minutes later, Taylor’s mazy run bisected the home rearguard as he ghosted past Jose Semedo with a clever faint and turn of pace but his cross-cum-shot failed to trouble the home goal before a superb pass into the channel released Revell down the right flank, who showed great awareness to pick out Pringle on the edge of the box but his drilled effort was straight down the throat of Westwood. With half-time approaching, Wednesday arguably had their best chance of the half when Maghoma got the better of Frazer Richardson before fizzing a ball into the chest of Giles Coke, who gave sub Atdhe Nuhiu a sight of goal but he volleyed over when he should have done better. Following the restart, the Millers had the first sight of goal when Pringle’s deep centre was met by the head of Green at the far post but Westwood was well-stationed to snuff out his powerful header. The visitors had a lucky escape when a long ball forward saw Broadfoot under pressure from Nuhiu and the ex-Rangers defender fired a backpass back at Collin, who swiped at the ball but fortunately for the Millers, he made just enough contact as the ball sliced narrowly wide of his own goal. Moments later, it was the Wednesday faithful who had their hearts in their mouths when Westwood’s attempted clearance was charged down by Revell but luckily for the home side, the ball flew wide of the sticks. Moments later, Taylor ghosted past home skipper

Sam Johnstone so that’s big news.” Points targets… “As staff we set a little target of points from blocks of games but we never translate that to the players as there’s already enough pressure but we have our own targets but it never ever works out like that!” Meanwhile Dickov was able to add to his squad, and he was delighted to confirm that Enda Stevens has re-joined the club on an initial one month loan deal until 8th December. The Aston Villa full back arrives at Keepmoat Stadium having made fourteen appearances in all competitions for Paul Dickov’s side last season. Dickov said: “He’s come in, signed the forms and we’re just waiting on Football League approval. It’s a good fit; it’s what we said with Sam [Johnstone] who knows the place and Andy Butler who had games, so we’re delighted to have him back. It helps [knowing the surrounds], he knows the players, the club, myself and what we’re like plus the fact he’s been getting games under his belt means he’s not playing catch up.” Since departing Rovers, the 24 year old Dubliner has been on an emergency loan with League 2 Northampton Town, scoring one goal in four appearances with the Cobblers.

Glenn Loovens with a minimum of fuss before advancing to the edge of the box but his weak effort failed to trouble Westwood. In a whirlwind sixty seconds, May jinked past Broadfoot with consummate ease before cutting inside to strike goalwards but Richie Smallwood’s superb block snuffed out the danger before the Millers turned defence into attack in the blink of an eye as Revell’s knockdown paved the way for Richardson, to fire a skimming effort which whistled narrowly over the bar. Moments later, Taylor’s quick-thinking almost paid dividends as his quick corner gave Pringle, a glimpse of goal but he was crowded out as he looked to shoot before Pringle turned provider as his superb centre almost saw Revell sneak in at the far post but the ball skimmed off his head. With the game in the balance, Helan’s marauding run had the Millers’ defence at sixes and sevens but his cross was overhit before Revell was inches away from connecting with Taylor’s superb run and cross at the other end. With quarter an hour to go, the Owls came within a whisker of making the decisive breakthrough when Helan firstly fired a snap shot from an acute angle which was parried by Collin at his near post before Loovens found himself in acres of space from the resultant corner but his deft flick fizzed past the upright with the Rotherham ‘keeper a helpless bystander. The Millers fans were almost in ecstasy when Frecklington was put in the clear before calmly stroking the ball past the advancing Westwood into the heart of the home goal but any joy turned to despair as the flag had long been raised. Moments later, the visitors had a let-off when Kieran Lee jinked smartly in the box before appearing to be nudged over by Broadfoot but referee Miller waved away strong home protests before Taylor superbly worked a shooting position to fire a fearsome effort narrowly over the bar at the other end. In the dying minutes, May’s clever turn and shot had Collin at full stretch before Frecklington was penalised for nudging over Semedo on the edge of the box paving the way for the ex-St Johnstone striker to strike a superb free-kick with his instep which flew in the air forcing Collin to punch clear as the game headed to a goalless draw as both sides had to settle for sharing local bragging rights.

CLOUGH FULL OF PRAISE AFTER DRAW Nigel Clough was full of praise for his two central defenders following Saturday’s FA Cup stalemate at Crewe. Chris Basham replaced PaddyMcCarthy alongside Jay McEveley at the heart of United’s back four at Gresty Road and their performances didn’t go unnoticed by the Gaffer, who remarked: “Chris and Jay were excellent and limited a Crewe side that have only lost once recently to very little. Our supporters perhaps look at the table and see they are bottom of the table, but on their day they are a capable team and a dangerous one, especially at home.” United, who will be ball number 21 in Monday’s second round draw, televised live on BBC Two from 7pm, remain competitive in four competitions, something that pleases Clough, who also spoke about the impact Diego De Girolamo had at the weekend and the enforced absence of James Wallace. The Blades boss added: “We are still in all the competitions from the start of the season and we are in mid November, that is an achievement to be proud of in itself. “Diego looked bright when he came on, he needs to improve on

certain aspects of his play, but he is full of confidence having scored goals at York and we thought he might nick one for us as the game progressed. He comes into contention

to start at Walsall, but we will mix and match things for that tie. James Wallace had picked up another muscle strain, but hopefully he will be back available for Doncaster.”

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

OWLS NEWS2014/15 OWLS YET AGAIN DRAW BLANK AT HOME The Owls and Rotherham played out a goalless draw on Saturday, in keeping with both sides’ current form. With Wednesday seeking a much-needed home success to mirror their away pedigree and the Millers arriving in S6 with only one victory on the road, something had to give at Hillsborough if there was to be a winner. But the two South Yorkshire teams could not be separated and each had to settle for a share of the spoils. After an impeccably observed minute’s silence to mark the 100th anniversary of WWI, the Owls certainly started this derby brightly. Stevie May – a summer target for the Millers – looked lively in the early throes, as did Jacques Maghoma, who did well to work his way out of the corner to find Gary Taylor-Fletcher but the latter’s shot whistled narrowly wide. The visitors threatened themselves, though, and Paul Green went close with a clear header from a Ben Pringle corner. The contest then

developed into typical derby fare of plenty of hustle and bustle but a dearth of chances, with the only real talking point remaining in the first half an injury to Taylor-Fletcher that prompted an early departure for the loan recruit. The Owls also started the second period well and almost profited when goalkeeper Adam Collin miskicked a Kirk Broadfoot backpass. But Rotherham survived the scare as the ball ran wide and gave Wednesday one of their own when Fraser Richardson smashed over the crossbar after May had a low effort smothered in front of the Kop.

It was an end to end affair as the second half progressed but for all the effort, chances remained few and far between. Jeremy Helan forced Collin into action with a near post save in the closing stages and Glenn Loovens put the rebound just wide from the resulting corner and that was as near as the game came to a decider. The Owls did have a penalty shout when Kieran Lee went down in the area but the referee waved the claim away and with it went any chance of a goal. Owls: Westwood, Palmer, Lees, Loovens, Helan, Maguire (Lee 66), Semedo, Coke, Maghoma, May, TaylorFletcher (Nuhiu 39) Rotherham: Collin, Skarz, Broadfoot, Frecklington, Revell, Green, Richardson, Pringle, Morgan, Taylor, Smallwood

HARD WORK CONTINUES

Midfield man Kieran Lee has said Wednesday are lacking that bit of luck at present but a draw against local rivals Rotherham was a fair result. Lee had a strong claim for a penalty late in the second half after going down under a challenge from Kirk Broadfoot. Ex-Oldham man Lee believes on another day, it may have been given but the important thing was a response after defeat in midweek to Bournemouth and that the hard work continues. He told swfc.co.uk: “I thought we started

well in the first 15 minutes, on the front foot and continued that throughout the first half. “In the second half, it was more even and they came back into the game. I think a draw was the fair result. But after the disappointment in midweek, we’ll add that point and work hard over the break. “I think it was a penalty but I will have to watch the footage back. From my point of view, their man has taken me down but the referee hasn’t given it.” International action takes over next weekend, meaning the Owls next

feature on 22 November against Huddersfield Town away from home. Lee added: “We’re doing everything we can to try and get the results. We’re creating the chances and putting balls into the box. “I think maybe we need that bit of luck, like the penalty decision, and we will kick on. “We have another derby after the break and I expect it to be at a similar pace. We’ll go away and work hard over the break and be ready for the game.”

COKE REACHES 100 GAME MILESTONE

Midfielder Giles Coke has surpassed the 100appearance milestone in his Owls career. The 28-year hit the landmark earlier this month after over four years at Hillsborough. Coke joined Wednesday in July 2010 and has scored seven goals in total for the club, including his spectacular strike on the opening day of the campaign at Brighton. The midfielder spent the majority of 2011/12 on loan at Bury and also had a temporary spell with Swindon in 2012/13. But Coke – who

has previously represented Motherwell, Northampton and Mansfield – fought his way back into contention at Hillsborough and has featured 16 times for Wednesday this season. He told swfc.co.uk: “It’s an honour to have made so many appearances for this club and I’m really happy with that. “I’ve had spells away on loan and when you’re away, you don’t know what might happen. “But I did well out on loan and got the chance to come back here and I’m really enjoying it. “100 games for one club at this level is a
