FURTHER DETAILS REVEALED OF CITY’S SPECTACULAR CHRISTMAS CBeebies stars, singers who triumphed in Britain’s Got Talent and an X-Factor winner are among the famous faces set to entertain at Sheffield’s Christmas lights switch-on this weekend. A full programme of entertainment will begin from 2pm on Sunday, November 23, before the big switch itself is flicked at 5.30pm in the Peace Gardens. On the Heart Stage in the Peace Gardens, X Factor winner Sam Bailey will perform, as will last year’s Britain’s Got Talent

champions Callabro. Also entertaining the crowds will be musicians, choirs and pantomime performers starring in this year’s production of “Dick Whittington” at the Lyceum Theatre, including Eastenders’ Samantha Womack. Characters from films including “Frozen” will be meeting children in the Peace Gardens and Town Hall Square, while children’s favourites from CBeebies will lead a storytelling session in the Winter Garden. Other family-friendly attractions will include

an elf trail, a fairy grotto, carol singing, craft activities, meet-and-greets with film and television characters, a miniature skating rink in the Peace Gardens, fairground rides and the chance to take a ride in vehicles from the National Emergency Museum. Councillor Isobel Bowler, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “I’m really pleased that we have been able to offer a full programme of entertainment for this year’s Christmas lights switch-on.

“It will particularly appeal to families, with entertainment ranging from children’s television favourites through to pop stars and traditional carol singers. “I’m sure it will encourage people to visit the city centre on Sunday to experience the switch-on and also to do some Christmas shopping, perhaps pick up an unusual gift at the markets, experience the temporary skating rink and last – but not least – enjoy some festive food and drink.” For those wanting to buy

fresh produce and original gifts, the Moor Market will be open on Sunday, 23 November between 10.30am and 4.30pm. Meanwhile, attractions at The Moor’s Christmas Party, running from 12noon to 6pm that day, will include guaranteed snow from a snow machine, giant snowmen and the switch-on of The Moor’s own Christmas tree at 3pm. Santa and Rudolph will also be there, alongside a live nativity including real reindeer. The Christmas market runs from 10am to 6pm daily throughout November and, in December, it will be open until 8pm each Wednesday. On Sunday, 23 November, activities in the Peace Gardens will finish at 6.30pm.

The inventor of predictive text has died. His funfair will be hello on Sundial. Last week French Police issued a warning saying that no one should approach the Tiger that was roaming around Paris. That’s just as well as the urge to approach a Tiger in the street must be so overwhelming. My son just asked me what is it like to have children. So I interrupted him every five seconds until he cried. My girlfriend was complaining that I never buy her flowers. I didn’t even know she sold them. Environmental scientists have proved that a 5 minute shower uses, on average, a third of the amount of water that a fifteen minute shower does. I was out fishing today and I couldn’t believe it when I reeled in a conger eel. There were 20 other fish hanging onto the back of it. I tried to sell a second hand clock but I had to withdraw it from sale because of the amount of people asking me if it was a wind up. A man walks into a library and asks for a book on ‘Finding Bigfoot’. The librarian directs him to the large print section. I’ve just seen a bloke carrying four Alsatians, six Jack Russells, two Labradors and a bulldog: “Is this some sort of record attempt?” I asked. “No, I’m a vet” he replied, “I never put a healthy dog down.”

ISSUE

NEWS & INFORMATION

SHEFFIELD CARERʼS SHOWCASE RVS OPPORTUNITY Carers play an important role in Sheffield – there are over 60,000 carers in the city. But recently there hasn’t been a clear forum/ network where adult carers can ‘have their say’ about issues which affect them, whatever their caring situation. (Organisations and networks such as FLASh and the Parent Carer Forum do great work on behalf of specific groups of carers.) Sheffield Carers Centre has received a small grant from the city’s Equality and Fairness Grant to help set up a network of carers who want to make their views known on issues which affect them – whether it’s the development of services for carers or the people they support, or the introduction of new services or policies. These developments may be introduced by the NHS, the Council or by organisations who work with carers. Or you may want to let us know of other issues which affect carers. We know that organisations (including the council and the NHS) are often keen to hear carers’ views but it’s difficult to arrange this in a fair and transparent way because we don’t already have a network of carers we can contact easily to let them know what’s happening. The grant is only until March 2015 – and focuses on adults caring for adults – but we will be able to arrange three Carers Voice meetings in 2015 for carers to be able to comment on how services may affect them in their caring role. You can

make your voice as carer heard: • By joining our email list - we will let you know when opportunities to give your views arise and you can either send your views to us or comment directly to the organisation asking for contributions – email office@sheffieldcarers.org.uk • By logging onto our website and keeping up to date with our Have Your Say page, which is continually developing – www.sheffieldcarers.org.uk • By letting us know you would be interested in attending one of our meetings in the city centre. When arrangements are made, we’ll contact you to let you know and then you can decide whether or not to come along (or let us have your views in writing) – email office@sheffieldcarers. org.uk or contact Steph on 0114 278 8942.

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday will see over 20 beers, all brewed in South Yorkshire, on offer at Crookes Social. This is possibly the first time that such an event will be held in a Sheffield club and gives members and non-members alike the chance to sample some great, locally brewed real ales. New manager Maurice Champeau has organised the three day session with the help of Thomas Gill from Sheffield’s Stancill Brewery. Thomas has attracted support from brewers based all around our region in what promises to be a great weekend, with the festival open until midnight on every day. Entry is only £3.50 and in return you not only receive a commemorative glass but you can visit on all three days for no extra. There is also a discount for club members and CAMRA card holders. There will be live entertainment on Friday and Saturday evening, with Platinum appearing on Friday and the Stancill Beer Cellar Men entertaining you on Saturday. While enjoying the Beer Festival, why not take the time to explore the club. One of the largest in Sheffield, Crookes has a huge concert room, an excellent and comfortable Lounge with its own pool table and HD TV, a separate snooker room with two full size tables and a function/meeting room. There’s even an indoor balcony room overlooking the club’s own bowling green! As Maurice says, it’s a club that’s also a pub with

snooker, pool, live music, a bowling green and now regular cask ales. Make it a date to visit on Friday, Saturday or Sunday; or why not all three days? It’s bound to be well worth it. Crookes Social Mulehouse Road, Crookes, Sheffield S10 1TD Tel: 0114 266 0114 3 minute walk from Number 52 bus stop at Crookes. Non-members Welcome.

CARLTON PARK HOTEL ROTHERHAM

Christmas at Carlton Park

What is Fostering and why should you consider Fostering for Treehouse Care? Fostering is looking after someone else’s child in your own home; this could be for a few days or for several years. Children need to be looked after for many reasons; some are in conflict with their parents, or need guidance to get them ‘back on track’. Others have suffered harm and need a safe place to live. Sometimes their parents may be in need of a break, or experiencing health problems. We need carers for children of all ages. These children require care and nurturing, fairness, clear guidance and need to feel safe and experience fun. Our carers state that they feel 100% supported, 365 days a year. We offer excellent training for all our carers and staff who are dedicated and skilled in supporting foster carers, with an emphasis on therapeutic behaviour management. You do not have to have any initial formal qualifications. It might be that you have raised your own children or you have work related experience. You should be able to communicate with children and young people, and have patience, perseverance, tolerance, understanding, a sense of fairness and fun. This might be the right career for you!

THE MANFREDS LIVE IN SHEFFIELD

All time great British R&B band The Manfreds head out on tour this Autumn playing 34 shows across the UK calling at Sheffield City Hall on Wednesday 3rd December. Original Manfred Mann members Paul Jones, Mike Hugg and Tom McGuinness plus Rob Townsend, Marcus Cliffe and Simon Currie are joined by former member Mike d’Abo for what promises to be a terrific occasion. And for this tour it’s not just the one but both of the original singers live on stage – Paul Jones and Mike D’Abo. The seven strong Manfreds have had more hits amongst their

respective players than almost any other band. They have firmly secured their place in the annals of British music. The successes came not just as Manfred Mann – though they clocked up an impressive 17 hits with 14 Top 10s including three No 1s – but also as solo artists and in subsequent groups. Lead singer Paul Jones had several big hits in his own right before going on to form the Blues Band and become an influential radio broadcaster. He has repeatedly won Harmonica Player of the year. Tom McGuinness formed McGuinness Flint with ex-John

Mayall drummer Hughie Flint and enjoyed massive hits. Mike Hugg went on to write hundreds of award-winning jingles plus the theme tunes to Up The Junction and The Likely Lads. Mike D’Abo, who replaced Paul in Manfred Mann, wrote some huge best sellers including Handbags And Gladrags (recorded by Chris Farlowe, Rod Stewart and the Stereophonics) and Build Me Up Buttercup (The Foundations) as well as major soundtracks and jingles. The three remaining members, Rob Townsend, Marcus Cliffe and Simon Currie have all played with some of the biggest names in the industry carving their own successful solo careers. Manfred Mann formed in 1962 and scored their first UK Top 10 two years later with 5-4-3-2-1 which became the signature tune for the popular music TV show Ready Steady Go. Further hits followed with Do Wah Diddy Diddy, Sha La La and Pretty Flamingo. When Paul Jones left to pursue a solo career in 1966 he was replaced by Mike d’Abo and the group went on to score some of their biggest European hits - Ha Ha Said The Clown, Mighty

HE’S BEHIND YOU It was an arresting sight when north Sheffield PCSO turned up at Ecclesfield EPPiC theatre to lend a hand in rehearsals for this year’s panto production by High Green Musical Theatre Group. Members were learning their lines for Cinderella and ugly sisters Fearne and Holly got the ultimate seal of approval from PCSO Raynor who called in to check whether Cinderella needed help from the long arm of the law. With no harm done, they were able go off to normal duties leaving the sisters to get their comeuppance in time-honoured panto fashion. This year’s production runs from Tuesday 16th December to Saturday 20th December and tickets are available now by contacting our Box Office on 0114 2403839. Theatre group spokesperson Laura Kay said: “This is the 25th

year we’ve been performing pantomimes and they’re always very popular with families. We’re hopeful this year will be the same because Cinderella really is a classic and our actors have been performing hard to get it right. “We put on shows throughout the year but the pantomime is always a lot of fun, its a chance for everyone to let their hair down and go to the extreme – and that includes the audience. “We were delighted that PSCOs were able to call in; I think it might have given our ugly sisters as much of a fright as they will get from the audience reaction to their antics. The group was launched in 1948 and is mainly financed by income from ticket sales and fundraising

CLUBLAND BAND REUNION SHOW AT FIRTH PARK WMC

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE

The most suprising thing about clubland is that it never fails to surprise! After a chance meeting founder members of Sheffield’s very own Harvey Ruff Band have decided to hit the road once more! Now working as a multiinsrumental duo with keyboards, drums and a half dozen or so guitars Alan (Jack) Bunker and Ronnie R, both established performers in their own right, concluded after a bit of a ‘sesh’ (an awful load of lager) that it just had to be done!!! Since first starting the band in 1972 Ron and Jack found fame first as guests on Radio Sheffield and then as fledgling Radio Hallam’s favourite band. Untold numbers of gigs in the U.K. and abroad was certainly an apprenticeship to behold! Family commitments and such during the early eighties changed things but the band never really split up. Jack found fame and fortune with rock band Phoenix Rising and Ron with Chesterfield bands Stormwatch and Wythfynde, then in later years as a solo performer. With modern day technology being at hand and experience beyond any X FACTOR contestant keep an eye on these spring chickens. With not a zimmer frame in sight their reunion gig is at Firth Park WMC on the 30th of November. So go on down, meet old mates and listen to some cracking tunes old and new, you may be suprised!

This week we had international Football coverage on Radio Nightingale. From the New York Stadium we were able to provide commentary of the international U19’s friendly game between England and Italy. The England side were impressive and ran out 3-0 victors with goals coming from Chelsea youngsters Izzy Brown and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Also this week we started the distribution of our 2015 diaries. A big thank you to Russell Penny of K P Penny Printers who not only produces the diaries but also organises all of the local business support which covers the printing costs. Thank you also to the businesses who continue to support Radio Nightingale. The diaries are being distributed by our collectors in the hospital foyer. A diary for next year, that really is the beginning of the run in to Christmas! Don’t forget if you’re shopping online for presents, food or last-minute escapes start from www.easyfundraising.org. uk/radionightingale and create a donation to Radio Nightingale along the way. It doesn’t cost any extra to you and there’s over 2,000 major high street and internet retailers waiting for your purchases and poised to donate to Radio Nightingale when you check-out!

KNOCK KNOX Review: Mallory Knox, 16/11/14, Leadmill Sheffield By Kt Evans

Mallory Knox are fast becoming one of the UK’s best alternative live bands…fact. Their stage shows match perfectly the passion and determination given within each and every track written, whilst also allowing the listener to take their own personal journey of exploration into their repertoire. As part of their current UK tour to show off their brand spanking new record ‘Asymmetry,’ we caught a glimpse of the five piece at Sheffield’s Leadmill. Having recently spoken to M-Live about his personal apprehension for performing their newly written songs live on stage to an audience who have yet to hear them, lead vocalist Mikey Chapman seemed not to be bothered by such height. Instead, he clearly channelled his inner anticipation into a confident, at ease front man, opening their killer set with ‘QOD II.’ A bold, yet perfectly suited hit to kick processions off, the crowd were thrust into the last two years of the band’s personal diary, with each new hit giving insights and details within the making of album number two. This was followed by ‘Shout To The Moon’ and ‘Hello,’ a hit which pretty much sums up the entire ethos of Mallory Knox…exceptionally entertaining, fun

and energetic, the five piece may still have a cult following, however are on the brink of hitting the mainstream with brute force…so be on guard! ‘Wake Up’,’ ‘When Are We Waking Up’ and ‘Resuscitate’ followed, all going to show that the group’s brand spanking new material went down just as successfully as older, more widely known hits. However this really is the beauty of Mallory Knox. Rather than making a song and dance about their recently recorded new album, the five piece slotted the transition between tracks in with ease and fluidity, allowing for a set with pace and motion. Instead of highlighting his nervousness, Mikey Chapman played the professional by ensuring his vocals and performance were on point throughout, so any signs of pre stage nerves were well and truly thrown in the bin. With chants of ‘Ma-llor-y’ and ‘we want more’ bouncing off the main stage walls of Leadmill, the group closed their 75 minute set with ‘She Took Him To The Lake’ and ‘Lighthouse.’ The perfect ending to a spot on set, closing with a track off their first album meant every single audience member could sing and celebrate together…because let’s be honest, when do you ever get the chance to belt your lungs out in public?!

DOWNLOAD ANNOUNCE HEADLINE ACTS Ok ok, we understand that the last thing you are wanting to think about right now is sleeping under canvas and sliding through thigh high mud however Download Festival have made an announcement too good not to share. With 2015 now only round the corner, the 2015 rock event yesterday was announced to have no other than Slipknot and Muse headlining its estimated 120,000 ticket holders. Alongside these, Judas Priest, Black Stone Cherry and Five Finger Death Punch have also been named. Rock on! Everybody’s favourite rock, metal, alternative and punk festival, Download is the place to be if you like your music with an added punch. Held at Donnington Park and ran throughout June, 2015’s event is set to be held 12-14th June with zero changes to the festival we all know and love so well…other than one…the line-up. We say time and time again that it would be a massive challenge to top 2014’s line-up, however with a new string of announcements now being released, ladies and gents, be upstanding for what could potentially be, the best Download Festival yet. Headlining the event, heavy metal legends

Slipknot. These notorious metallers took to the main stage in 2013 however are back to throw us all into a frenzy of mosh pitting, head bangs and ridiculous crowd surfing. Having recently released their latest studio album ‘:5 They Gray Chapter,’ expect massive from these mask cladded rockers. Also announced, Muse, to headline the second stage of the event. Having formed in 1994, the three piece from Devon have gone onto sell over 15 million albums worldwide along with filling stadiums and arenas across the world. With hits ‘Super Massive Black Hole,’ ‘Uprising’ and ‘Plug In Baby,’ Muse’s anthemic sound and killer stage performance never fails to deliver on a colossal scale. Alongside these, Judas Priest and Black Stone Cherry. Both bands who are unquestionably pioneers of their genre, they will be joined by Marilyn Manson and A Day To Remember. Currently undergoing their full UK live tour, pop punk / alternative rock kings A Day To Remember are the ultimate sound track to a rockers night out…so be prepared! Five Finger Death Punch and Faith No More have also been added to the line-up, which is expected to blossom in the coming months. Tickets are on sale now so check out www. downloadfestival.co.uk for full terms and conditions, festival updates and travel info. Download Festival is from 12-14th June 2015.

‘Asymmetry’ is out now through Sony Records.

If the burst pipe is on the main water system the rush of water will stop after a short while. If the rush of water does not stop or there is still a constant run of water, the problem is probably on the cold water storage system. You will need to drain down the cold water storage tank which is usually located in the roof space.

IS YOUR HOME READY FOR WINTER? Be smarter by being prepared for the winter Cold spells can be troublesome for your home. There are some simple steps you can take to protect your home from winter weather which may help reduce repairs and maintenance. In very cold weather, water pipes can freeze and this can cause them to burst. The advice below should help avoid frozen pipes: • Protect your water pipes with insulation (lagging), especially those on external walls, in lofts and unheated rooms. • Keep your house warm by using the central heating for short periods of time throughout the day. • Allow warm air into your roof space by keeping the loft hatch open. • Keep the cupboard door under the sink open. This will let warm air move around the pipes. • Keep room doors slightly open to allow the warm air to move around the house.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

With a lot more time on my hands this week, I’ve still been keeping a keen eye on social media and various forums, and it’s come to my attention that some self appointed ‘expert’ anglers really are unable to string a sentence together when it comes to expressing an opinion... Of particular note this week, I followed a debate regarding the capture of a river record barbel, and the point was raised as to whether much credit should be given to the angler who caught it. The reason for the query is that the angler in question is alleged to more or less ‘camp’ on the bank, and has caught the fish repeatedly at lower weights until it was eventually weighed as a record. It was also noted that despite it being a repeat capture (several times) it had always been suggested that it may have been claimed as a new fish after each capture, thus enabling the angler to claim several 15lb barbel, rather the same fish several times... if that makes sense? Now at this point, I feel it only right to say that I don’t much care either way; it has no impact on my fishing, and I’m in no position to, nor do I feel any inclination, to pass judgement on either the angler or the circumstances surrounding the capture of the fish. I do however respect the rights of the questioner to ask opinion, and for others to give their polite views once the query has been made; what I do object to is the sheer amount of absolute drivel which followed. I have no idea why some online anglers appear to be a completely separate breed to the rest of the human race. Not once on the bank have I ever witnessed or heard such vitriol, such animosity, as I see online. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate that the written word can be read in many ways, and in the absence of intonation or inflection, can be misinterpreted, but that is no excuse for the complete garbage that some spout as valid opinion... I have watched with mouth agape as others rush to the keyboard, qualify themselves as expert because their online name includes ‘carp angler’ or ‘barbel rustler’ and post something they consider as gospel truth and fact which should be listened and respected by all because they get a couple of quid off ‘Joe’s Shed Bait’s’ and are therefore sponsored. I mean come on... I will listen to valid, reasoned debate all day long because I may well learn from it and as I’ve said, I respect the right of all to have an opinion. But when obvious claptrap is forced upon me by someone who blatantly has no idea what they are talking about, Superbly located for Holidays & Short Stays Quality furnished log cabins, sleep up to 6. someone who does not have any information surrounding the capture (or whatever other point is being discussed) or someone who believes that shouting louder makes them correct, then I’m sorry, I’ll reserve the right to take issue. I refuse however to pander to Neanderthal mutterings, and will not appease them with a reply, nor add fuel to their fire, or enter into debate, but I may take the drastic step of ‘unfriending’ the offender from my Facebook page... because I have that choice. (Oh yes, I mean business!) I fear I’ve rambled off track a little, but my point is this; if an angler asks a question, seeks advice or offers a comment, why do some anglers feel they can launch a tirade? The initial posting degenerated quickly into a slanderous squabble of name calling and misspelling where nothing was learned, and no-one made any friends. Why? I’ve yet to read a golf forum where a player is slated for using a 4 iron instead of a sand wedge, or a pie baking group where Mrs. Miggins is pilloried for not having a pastry clover atop the pie, so why are some anglers so vacuously vocal? If you disagree, then that’s fine, but at least show a little dignity with your reply, and give it some weight perhaps with an explanation. Others may then take what you have to say seriously and engage in quality debate from which we all learn something and everyone parts as chums... a much better result don’t you think? Now, I’m off to Joe’s Bait Shed, I’ve got some bait waiting....

by Michael Clarke There was a shorter fixture list than normal, due to many of the league’s clubs taking part in Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA competitions. However, there was still plenty of action with nine league games taking place on Saturday.

Premier Division Second placed Swinton Athletic lost 6-0 away against an unpredictable Oughtibridge WMFC side on Saturday. Oughtibridge had not won in the league since mid-September prior to this win. On the contrary, Swinton were previously unbeaten in the league but have now lost their last two league games. Swinton remain in second, three points off the pace, with two games spare. Last years’ champions Handsworth Parramore’s winless run was extended to three league games on Saturday, as they fell to a 2-1 home defeat to Jubilee Sports. Dylan Parrott and Josh Statham scored the vital goals for Jubilee Sports climb into fifth place with the win, and have already registered seven points this month. Division One Silkstone United were 4-0 winners over South Kirkby Colliery at Silkstone Recreation Ground. It is the fourth win-in-a-row for Silkstone and sit in a comfortable mid-table position. Rotherham Town ended a run of four league games without a win, by beating Millmoor Juniors Reserves 4-2 at Grange Park. The vital goals for Rotehrham came from Carl Marriott (2), Rich Williams and Andy Hanson. Penistone Church Reserves are up to fourth position, following an emphatic 8-1 away win over struggling Sheffield Athletic. Division Two The bottom two met at the Civil Service Ground, with Sheffield Lane Top hosting bottom-of-thetable Bawtry Town. Sheffield Lane Top claimed all three points, as goals from Jake Hampshire, Brett Gardner and Joe Bedford gave them a 3-0 win. The Lane Top climb two places in the table following the win. Goals from Rayon Ramsey, Leroy Williams, Leon Slater and Seth Myers gave Caribbean Sports an impressive 4-1 home win over third placed Parkgate Reserves. It is only the second home league win of the season for mid-table Caribbean. Steve Ellor scored the only goal at Old Road Playing Fields to give Denaby United a 1-0 home

RESERVES VICTORIOUS DURING INTERNATIONAL WEEK Rotherham United Reserves recorded another victory after a 2-0 success over Burton Albion in the Final Third Development League. It was another strong line-up for the Millers with nine first-team players starting which included Jordan Bowery, Matt Derbyshire and Jonson ClarkeHarris. There was also a start for full-back Mat Sadler who was back with the Millers following the culmination of his loan spell with Crawley Town. Following the 8-0 demolition of Mansfield Town last week the reserves were looking to make it back-toback victories against a Burton side who also fielded a number of professionals in their ranks. It was a strong start by the Millers with Ryan Hall the first to take aim with a shot from the edge of the penalty area on six minutes which was blocked by the Burton defence. Two minutes later and a brilliant diagonal ball from Conor Newton was expertly controlled by Derbyshire but before he could shoot he was blocked out at the last minute. Burton’s best opportunity of the opening exchanges fell to Jacob Blythe who attacked from the left before being held up by Bradley PeaceMcDonald. The Burton front-man was forced to cut inside before shooting straight at Tony Thompson with a rightfooted strike. After a positive opening the Millers were rewarded with the opening goal on 21 minutes. An inswinging cross from the right by Anthony Wordsworth was headed home from close range by

WONDER STRIKE DOWNS ROVERS A wonder strike from Jamie Murphy saw United take all three points at the Keepmoat Stadium. Sheffield United started the game the stronger of the two sides and enjoyed early possession but quality was lacking in the final third to test Sam Johnstone. Rovers first chance came five minutes in as good inter-play between Wakefield and Main set up Forrester in the area, but before the midfielder could release his shot he was pulled back for offside. It was Forrester again who looked to test Howard as Coppinger picked up the ball in the six yard box. His lay off to Forrester was good but the resulting shot went well wide of the target. Wellens looked threatening on the ball and a great run from midfield saw him with a chance but his shot was blocked by the United defence. The visitors first chance came from Baxter as he struck a fierce free kick from 25 yards but Johnstone punched the effort away. There was then a strong appeal for the penalty from United as Stevens brought down Campbell-Ryce, but the referee awarded a free kick instead. The teams went in level at half time with neither side having really threatened the opposition goalkeepers. It was the visitors again who started stronger but

Derbyshire who bagged his third goal in four reserve team outings. On 26 minutes Blythe went close again for the visitors but his effort produced a smart save low to his left from Thompson. The Millers could have doubled their advantage on 38 minutes when Bowery flicked on Thompson’s long punt forward, but Derbyshire’s lob over his shoulder fell wide of the post. Reserves After a slow opening to the second half the Millers again went close to doubling their advantage. Again it was a diagonal pass which caused problems, this time from the boot of Sadler, which was nodded into the path of Newton but he shot wide left-footed on the stretch. On 65 minutes the Millers created another good opportunity when Bowery struck a shot across goal which was parried by Charlie Hornby into path of Derbyshire, but his effort was blocked by Chris Richards with Wordsworth’s follow-up saved again this time by the legs of Hornby. With just under 10 minutes remaining the Millers finally made the game safe. Wordsworth lost possession close to the area but the ball ran kindly for sub Rose who outmuscled Richards before calmly slotting the ball past Hornby.

Fixtures correct at time of going to press Updates can be found at www.themillers.co.uk after a quiet opening 15 minutes of the second half Rovers were awarded a penalty. Main’s lay off put Tyson through who then squared the ball to Coppinger. The Rovers captain was through on goal but was brought down by McCarthy before getting his shot away, the referee pointed straight to the spot. McCarthy saw himself receive a red card for the resulting challenge as his afternoon came to an end. Forrester stepped up and saw his penalty saved by Howard as the United keeper guessed the right way to deny Rovers the opening goal. Just two minutes later the visitors took the lead as Jamie Murphy cut inside and curled a wonder strike into the top corner, leaving Johnstone with no chance. Rovers searched for an equaliser and Curtis Main came close as he struck a shot from 25 yards, which was well saved by Howard. A run of corners followed for the home side, none of which came to anything. Murphy came close to doubling his tally as Johnstone saw a shot go just wide of his right post. In the search for an equaliser Kyle Bennett was introduced and looked lively. He almost made an instant impact as he saw a long range shot cannon back off the post but it was beginning to look like it wouldn’t be Rovers’ day. There was a big moment for Youth Team player Jack McKay when he replaced Curtis Main to make his debut for the club, but Rovers chances were limited and after three minutes added time the referee blew for full time. It ended Rovers 0-1 Sheffield United.

BLADES NEWS2014/15 BLADES VICTORIOUS IN LOCAL DERBY A sending off, a penalty save and a magnificent winning goal from the Blades - what more do you want from a local derby? It was Jamie Murphy who scored the allimportant goal, cutting in from the left and giving Rovers goalkeeper Sam Johnstone no chance. This came moments after Paddy McCarthy was sent off for a foul on James Coppinger and a subsequent penalty save from Mark Howard. Official teamsheets, handed to the referee an hour before kick-off, saw a couple of surprises, notably McEveley skippered the Blades. He was one of eight changes from the midweek JPT encounter and partnered returning loanee McCarthy in the heart of the defence. Doyle dropped to the bench and was joined by new capture Adams. United included four teenagers amongst the substitutes. The early exchanges were played out at a tempo with only half chances to report inside the opening 15 minutes. A Blades corner on two minutes saw Basham and McCarthy win important headers and Scougall almost attached himself to Baxter’s nod down from Basham’s diagonal delivery. For the home side, Forrester’s first

time effort was well wide and a quick freekick saw Howard force Tyson wide. The game’s first serious chance was when Forrester and Main linked up to present Coppinger with a shooting opportunity but Howard parried away and United were forced into a change when Wallace limped off, Doyle took over his midfield responsibilities. Doncaster picked up three bookings and the home fans’ displeasure assisted in Basham collecting a yellow card on 40 minutes, just before United made a strong end to the half. A 30-yard free-kick from Baxter was on target but punched away by Johnstone and a minute later it appeared that Campbell-Ryce was inside the box when he was pulled back by the already-cautioned Stevens but referee Hill decided to award freekick right on the edge of the box, from which the Blades produced a rehearsed move with Doyle’s powerful shot being deflected just wide. The opening 15 minutes of the second half saw United applying pressure but despite crosses from either flank, chances were again limited. There was another

penalty shout, on 52 minutes, but CampbellRyce’s shot hit the hand of Stevens. However, the drama was upped just after the hour. A sending off, a penalty save and a goal... all inside around five minutes! It began with a Doncaster breakaway and a couple of fortunate ricochets before McCarthy was given little option but to foul Coppinger, who was about to shoot. A penalty was given and McCarthy shown a red card, all before Howard dived to his right to push away Forrester’s spot-kick. Basham moved into the back four alongside McEveley and boss Clough was moments away from replace Campbell-Ryce with Flynn when the deadlock was broken. Alcock’s crossfield ball saw Baxter lay off for MURPHY to cut in from the left and let fly with a 20-yard effort which beat Johnstone and flew into the net - just in front of the Blades fans. As United continued to adapt to playing with ten men, Main’s 20 yard effort was pushed over the crossbar by Howard and Wakefield and McCombe both won headers in the Blades box from set-pieces. The visitors were not being overawed, though, Baxter fired over from inside his own half when Johnstone was out of position and Murphy attempted to repeat his goal but shot just wide of the near post. As the game moved into the final ten minutes, Rovers substitute Bennett fired against Howard’s left post and Forrester’s shot was deflected wide for a corner. Late on McGahey replaced Baxter, attempting to sure up the victory, and three minutes of added time saw United as solid as the previous 90 to record a very welcome South Yorkshire derby victory.

CLOUGH’S THOUGHT ON DONNY WIN Nigel Clough praised the character and desire of his team, after watching his ten men claim victory against the odds in Saturday’s local derby at Doncaster Rovers. In a frantic four minute spell just after the hour, Paddy McCarthy was shown a straight red card, Doncaster were awarded a penalty (which Mark Howard saved), before Jamie Murphy fired home a tremendous effort to ensure all three points came back up the M18 to Bramall Lane. Concluding his thoughts on the weekend’s fixture at the Keepmoat, Clough remarked: “When you have a numerical disadvantage everyone has to work that bit harder, Jose Baxter showed that up front on his own and young Harrison (McGahey)contributed at the end, even though he only played five or six minutes. “Jamie (Murphy) is getting back to his best, but for me Jay McEveley was the stand out performer, saying that everyone was impressive in the second-half. “We have a lot of our impact players still striving for top form, Scougs is showing glimpses, whilst Jamal (Campbell-Ryce) and Flynny are a bit in and out, but aren’t far off.

“We are in the top six, we are there or thereabouts and we haven’t hit top form.

If we can stay there until January time then hopefully we can really kick on and finish strongly.”

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

OWLS NEWS2014/15 EX-TERRIER TAYLORFLETCHER LOOKING FORWARD Between June 2005 and July 2007, Gary TaylorFletcher enjoyed a productive spell with Huddersfield Town. This weekend, though, the Leicester loanee will be out to haunt his former club as Wednesday head to the John Smith’s Stadium. The Owls v Terriers clash is to be aired live on Sky Sports and Taylor-Fletcher is looking forward to making his return to West Yorkshire. “I had a good two years at Huddersfield, we had a good team and the fans were brilliant with me,” he said. “I remember my time there fondly and look forward to going back. “I enjoyed a good spell there, scored goals and most of them came from right midfield because I was played there a lot.” The 33-year-old scored 26 goals in 78 starts for the Terriers and is working towards registering his first in the blue and white of Wednesday. “That’s what I want,” he told the Owls’ official website. “I have been here the past month now and this weekend is a big

game for us. “It would be great for me to score but as long as we do score and get the points that is the main thing. “These are definitely the game you want to play in. The derby games, the ones that get the fans going. “The game is shown

live so that shows there is plenty of interest and hopefully on the day we can deliver.” The striker had to withdraw early from the action last time out against Rotherham, having picked up an eye injury in the first half that required treatment. But Taylor-Fletcher has reported positive news on that front and said: “It’s settled down. It hindered me in training the following week but it has cleared up now and I’m all good to go.”

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY MATCHDAY CHARITY SUPPORT!

Thanks to Sheffield Wednesday’s commitment to charitable causes ten local charities have been profiled on matchday helping raise hundreds of pounds for the organisations. The club have a designated charity for each home game and the club shows their commitment to good causes by providing special partnerships throughout the season. Charity partners this season have included; The Royal British Legion, Sheffield Futures, The Eden Dora Trust and The Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity. On matchday, the charity partner for the game is

given space in the club’s programme, a message on the scoreboard, a special announcement by the presenter and select organisations receive bucket collections before the game and during half time. Thanks to the club, over the season, 23 charities will benefit from the matchday partnership, with hundreds more pounds expected to be raised through bucket collections.

The club aims to be as accommodating as possible by giving the charity great exposure. This not only means the organisation can raise funds but also increase awareness of what they do. Sheffield Wednesday would like to thank Owls fans for their continued generosity to the charity’s bucket collections and their support on matchday.

NO PRESSURE ON CAOLAN

Owls head coach Stuart Gray has said there is no pressure on Caolan Lavery as the young striker nears a return to action. After a picking up a knee injury in pre-season, the 22-year-old has faced a long road to recovery. But the striker is set to play a part against Middlesbrough for the Development Squad today which will serve as a significant point in Lavery’s recovery. Gray said: “We won’t put pressure on Caolan. He’s back in training, he’s going very well and he’s confident with it. “He’ll get a run out

against Middlesbrough but we have to be careful with him. “Caolan has got to be open and honest with us. If he feels anything we will shut him down. “The most important
