JACKPOT SMASHED FOR THE WOMEN OF STEEL! Well done Sheffield, you’ve done it! You’ve smashed the £150,000 target in recognition of our wonderful ‘Women of Steel’. The fundraising began in 2012 to raise the £150,000 for a special group of Sheffield women who worked tirelessly in Sheffield’s steelworks and factories during the two world wars to help keep industry going in the city. Their bravery and determination in working in unfamiliar surroundings of the factory floors has been virtually unrecognised over the last

seventy years. The campaign was launched by Sheffield City Council, who committed £28k to the fund, and called on everyone from local businesses, individuals, organisations and friends and family of the Women of Steel themselves to come together and get involved in raising the money required to commission a permanent memorial. The response has been overwhelming and support has come from not just local supporters but nationally and internationally, with
recent coverage spotted as far as the United Arab Emirates. Following consultation with a group of the Women of Steel, including the four ladies who have spear-headed the campaign: Mrs Ruby Gascoigne, Mrs Kathleen Roberts, Mrs Dorothy Slingsby and Mrs Kit Sollitt, the preferred memorial was decided – a figurative statue, made from bronze, to be located in Barkers’ Pool in the city centre. And last week, at a special concert held at Sheffield City Hall, the news that
everyone has been waiting to hear was finally made official with a cheque presentation from John Morris of Sheffield based company Stauff UK . Mr Morris recently contacted the appeal to say the company would like to make up the shortfall to hit the £150,000 target. Based on Carlisle Street East on the old site of Cammell Laird, later to be known as English Steel Corporation and finally British Steel Corporation, Stauff UK employs 220 people nationwide with 140 living in Sheffield. Mr Morris told us: “Steel production on this site started 150 years ago and during both world wars the women of steel manufactured shells, armour plates, and we also believe the bouncing
bomb made famous with the Dam Busters raid. After a discussion with our staff we would like to donate the amount required to take the fund to its target of £150k. The company will be donating this amount along with some further donations from staff at their own request.” Last week’s concert not only marks the fundraising target being smashed, but the start of the next chapter for the Women of Steel: keeping the legacy going. Cllr Dore added: “We have already started to discuss ideas for commemorative keepsakes, exhibitions, educational resources and apprenticeships to make sure we always remember and pay our respects and thanks to our Women of Steel.”

I phoned my wife earlier. “I’m just setting off from work, do you want me to pick up fish and chips on my way home?” It was met with a stony silence. I think she still regrets letting me name the twins. Some idiot has just come up to me in the street with a big red nose, shoes that are 5 sizes to big for him and a smiley face drawn on in make up. I couldn’t help but think; ‘Who is this clown?’ My fine art and fragrances business has failed. The perfumes sold well, but I didn’t really know how to market the paintings I’d bought. ONE POUND FARES TO CARRY YOU THROUGH CHRISTMAS Special bus services will run in Sheffield on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day for a festive fare of just £1 per journey. The First and Stagecoach bus services, run as part of Sheffield Bus Partnership and funded by Sheffield City Council, will operate on selected routes on Boxing Day from 7am until around 6.30pm and on New Year’s Day between 8am and 5.30pm. In the weeks leading up to Christmas the Partnership representatives will be handing out free information in the city centre to show how easy it is to get to the main destinations across the city and offering the chance to enter a free festive prize draw. Passengers can plan their journeys, find live disruption information and updates to scheduled services by:
transport can get out and see friends and family at Christmas; that is why we have worked hard to try and maintain a bus service over the Christmas period at an affordable fare.” The Sheffield Bus Partnership was launched two years ago and in that time over 1.57 million extra bus journeys have been made in the city. There have been 4.9 million (7.9 per cent) more fare paying passengers as punctuality and reliability of the services exceeded
the targets. Over £4.5 million has been invested in infrastructure, there are 166 newer buses on the roads and reduced fares are benefitting at least 60 per cent of adult fare paying passengers. Revised bus timetables will operate in Sheffield from Wednesday 24 December 2014 until Friday 2 January 2015. In many cases, services on weekdays will follow their usual Saturday timetables. NEWS & INFORMATION
WOMEN OF STEEL SMASH THE TARGET Well done Sheffield, you’ve done it! Their bravery and determination in working in unfamiliar surroundings of the factory floors has been virtually un-recognised over the last seventy years. The campaign was launched by Sheffield City Council, who committed £28k to the fund, and called on everyone from local businesses, individuals, organisations and friends and family of the Women of Steel themselves to come together and get involved in raising the money required to commission a permanent memorial. The response has been overwhelming and support has come from not just local supporters but nationally and internationally, with recent coverage spotted as far as the United Arab Emirates. And last night, at a special concert held at Sheffield City Hall, the news that everyone has been waiting to hear was finally made official with a cheque presentation from John Morris of
Sheffield based company Stauff UK . Mr Morris told us: “Steel production on this site started 150 years ago and during both world wars the women of steel manufactured shells, armour plates, and we also believe the bouncing bomb made famous with the Dam Busters raid. After a discussion with our staff we would like to donate the amount required to take the fund to its target of £150k. The company will be donating this amount along with some further donations from staff at their own request.” He added: “We currently supply the hydraulics for the two new UK aircraft carriers and many other Ministry of Defence ships and defence vehicles. And we are proud to be a part of this historic moment where the women finally get recognised for their gutsy contributions to industry during the wars.” John’s wife Tracey Morris and their 8 year old daughter Jade presented their cheque for £3360 to the Leader of Sheffield City Council, Cllr Julie Dore. This contribution along with the ticket sales to the sold out concert takes the fundraising well over the target amount. Cllr Dore has been behind the campaign from the start and said: “Well done Sheffield, you’ve smashed it for
Is your organisation concerned about the impact the Government’s welfare reform programme is having on the people and communities you support and represent? You are warmly invited to participate in this half day workshop to discuss these important issues facing so many people and communities in Sheffield. Lunch is included. The programme will include: • An update on the Government’s welfare reform programme: what has happened, what is expected to happen, and how this is impacting on people, families and communities in Sheffield • Examples of how this is affecting people, families and communities in Sheffield – presented by Tim Arnold and
Rachel McAuley, advisers with Sheffield Citizens Advice • An update on the work of Sheffield Citizens Advice, a year after it was formed by the merger of 12 advice organisations in the city – presented by Andy Buck, Chief Executive of Sheffield Citizens Advice • Brief updates about the City’s tackling poverty strategy and the development of Sheffield Money, our new ethical credit company • Debate and action planning about how the voluntary, community and faith sector can strengthen our response to welfare reform, and work together to ensure that advice services are as effective as possible Please register online at http://www.vas. org.uk/news2/321.

our Women of Steel. We have been overwhelmed by the response of people both locally and nationally to help achieve our goal of raising the funds needed for the commemorative statue. The amazing stories of contributions large and small over the last few years, are a credit to our great city, to the Women of Steel, and to everything that this campaign stands for. And so to everyone involved, I would like to share my heartfelt thanks. We can officially confirm that the statue is on order from the sculptor Martin Jennings, and the schedule for the unveiling in Barkers Pool is now on track for the Summer of 2016.” Last night’s concert not only marks the fundraising target being smashed, but the start of the next chapter for the Women of Steel: keeping the legacy going. Cllr Dore added: “We have already started to discuss ideas for commemorative keepsakes, exhibitions, educational resources and apprenticeships to make sure we always remember and pay our respects and thanks to our Women of Steel. Special thanks go out to John Palmer who has played a very significant role in co-ordinating fundraising events over the last few years; to The Sheffield Star who have helped keep the campaign in the spotlight locally; and to everyone who has supported the campaign. And finally we say well done to our inspirational Women of Steel themselves whose bravery, determination, work ethic and sheer guts are finally being given the recognition they deserve after 70 years.”

LOCAL MP OFFICIALLY OPENS THE NEW INN AT NORTON Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn performed the official opening ceremony at the New Inn at Norton, Sheffield last Friday evening and even pulled a pint for the customers. Now run by new lessees Clive and Andrea Fletcher, this Punch Taverns hostelry recently underwent a multithousand pound refurbishment. Area Manager for Punch, Andrew Longley, was also in attendance and explained to Meg Munn that all contractors involved in the refurb were local companies, which means that the considerable investment benefits the local economy. And it’s a refurbishment well worth seeing, with excellent seating creating a cosy atmosphere for all diners, complemented by great decoration, artworks and carpeting. Clive and Andrea have been in charge since completion, and have not only introduced an entire range of exciting and varied menus to this famous food pub but also launched a schedule of live entertainment dates well into the New Year. Four Menus to Choose From Just in time for the festive season, Clive and Andrea’s Christmas Fayre
menu launched this week and with three courses for just £11.95 it is excellent value. There is a choice of three starters – Tomato and Basil Soup, Chicken Liver Pate, and Breaded Brie Wedges. You can choose from four main courses – Traditional Roast Turkey, Prime Rump Steak, Oven Baked Salmon Fillet and for vegetarians there is a really special Mushroom, Brie, Hazelnut and Cranberry Wellington. With the four main courses comes a selection from four desserts – Traditional Christmas Pudding, Chocolate Brownie, Fruits of the Forest Cheesecake or Cheese and Biscuits. Their Main Menu includes starters from £1.95. The Combo for 2 is Scampi, Potato Wedges, Salmon Goujons, Onion Rings, Garlic Bread, Peppered Mushrooms and Dips – and all this is only £6.50! Jacket Potatoes with a choice of fillings are available from £3.50 and you can choose from no less than nineteen main courses – Hand Battered Fish and Chips are only £4.95, as is Chicken and Bacon Salad. The highest priced meal is the New Inn Grill at £11.95 and for this you receive a 5 Ounce Rump Steak,
Chicken Breast, Sausage, 5 Ounce Gammon Steak, Two Fried Eggs, Chips, Grilled Tomato, Onion Rings and Garden Peas – surely enough for any appetite! Burgers are also available and you can choose from four varieties starting at just £4.95. There is always room for a great dessert and there are four to choose from, starting at only £1.50. Children are welcome at the New Inn and of course there is a menu just for them. All prices are only £3.50 on the Kids Menu and they have a choice of four meals – Hand Battered Fish Goujons, Beef Burger, the ever popular Chicken Nuggets, Tomato and Basil Pasta and even a 5 Ounce Gammon Steak served with Chips and an Egg. Last but by no means least is the New Inn’s Specials Menu with two courses for only £5. These are served Monday to Friday from 12pm to 2pm.
LIVE ENTERTAINMENT Clive and Andrea have already arranged the introduction of live entertainment at the New Inn and on Saturday 13th December there will

AMAZING PRIZES ON OFFER WITH VULCAN TO THE SKY TRUST
Readers could win an astonishing selection of ‘moneycan’t-buy’ prizes specially assembled by local charity Vulcan to the Sky Trust, to help it raise money to maintain the world’s last flying Avro Vulcan, which is based in Doncaster. Few people know that Yorkshire is home to the world’s only allBritish, four-engine jet aircraft capable of flight. Not only is Vulcan XH558 the world’s last airworthy Avro Vulcan, it is
an iconic example of British aerospace engineering at its world-beating best. The Avro Vulcan’s original design brief was issued by the MoD in 1947 and the prototype flew for the first time on August 30th 1952, just eleven years after the first flight of its predecessor, the Avro Lancaster. The Avro Vulcan was labelled the Cold War peacekeeper until the aircraft flew into combat during the Falklands Conflict in 1982. Today, Vulcan XH558
is the last air-worthy Vulcan, kept in flight by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust. XH558 returned to the air in 2007 following one of the world’s most challenging restoration programmes and has become an air show phenomenon. To help raise money for the world’s last flying Vulcan, the Vulcan to Sky Trust has launched a remarkable new raffle, giving readers the opportunity to win five magnificent prizes including a flight in an Avro Lancaster in
CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT
Christ Church Fulwood, on the western edge of Sheffield, is set to welcome up to 4000 people to it’s annual Carols by Candlelight services. Featuring a fabulous choir and full orchestra, the services have been growing hugely in popularity over the last few years and now attract people from across the city and beyond. They have proved so popular that the church will repeat the event eight times this year. Music Coordinator at Christ Church, Peter Turnbull, said ‘We’re delighted to welcome many thousands to celebrate Christmas with us. Our conviction is that the birth of Jesus is truly ‘good news of great joy for all people’, as the Gospel writer puts it’.
Almost 200 musicians will participate across the eight services, with orchestral players and choral singers drawn from the congregation at Christ Church, and augmented by many other neighbours, friends and colleagues from across the city. This collection of mainly amateur musicians, with a sprinkling of professionals, makes a fantastic sound; it’s amazing what musical talent lurks around every Sheffield corner! The services follow something close to the traditional nine lessons and carols format, familiar to many, featuring plenty of carols to join in with, as well as musical items to enjoy and readings from the Bible telling the Christmas story. A short and engaging

Canada or in a legendary Spitfire alongside XH558. First prize will take two lucky winners on a luxury trip to Canada where they will join the elite group of civilians that have climbed the ladder into an Avro Lancaster, ducked under the massive main spa and squeezed along the fuselage to the cockpit as the crew fire-up the Merlins ready for takeoff. You can’t fly in the RAF’s historic Lancaster, so Vulcan to the Sky Trust has arranged a very special VIP visit to ‘VeRA’, the world’s only other airworthy example of the Vulcan’s famous predecessor. Second prize is a seat in a legendary Supermarine Spitfire, flying alongside the Vulcan as part of a VIP day with The Blades, the world’s only aerobatics team able to carry passengers. The winner of the third prize will take to the skies with an ex-Red Arrows
pilot in one of The Blades’ highperformance aerobatics aircraft and watch as the Vulcan XH558 flies at close quarters beside them. Passengers will also have the option to experience some daring manoeuvres as they break away to return to base. Fourth prize will provide one lucky lady or gentleman with a luxurious TAG Heuer watch, which has been in flight with Vulcan XH558. The winner will be supplied with a certificate of authenticity together with a photograph of them in the cockpit, signed by the pilot of the day. Finally, fifth prize will give one more lucky winner, and his or her partner, a chance to relax at a fashionable new spa hotel where they can enjoy dinner and a range of spa treatments ahead of their visit to XH558 at the Cold War Hangar in Doncaster. 2014 has been Vulcan XH558’s most successful season yet. The
Cold War aircraft performed perfectly, delighting around two million people at displays and other events across the country. She is now back in her hangar being prepared for her Winter Service, which will be funded by her supporters. Readers can buy tickets for the raffle, or request books for friends, family and colleagues, at www. vulcanxh558raffle.co.uk or by calling the office on 0845 5046 558. All tickets must be returned by March 30th 2015 and are just £2 each.

KASABIAN END TRIUMPHANT YEAR AT THE SHEFFIELD ARENA Preview: Kasabian, 13/12/14, Motorpoint Arena Sheffield By Kt Evans
Without a shadow of doubt, 2014 well and truly belongs to the mighty Kasabian. Alongside headlining the infamous Glastonbury festival, they also performed a very special hometown gig to 50,000 people in Victoria Park, Leicester, along with announcing a packed out Autumn UK tour. With this year also marking their most successful album release to date, the group are set to perform at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena on 13th December. Since their formation back in 1997, Kasabian have taken us all on a rollercoaster ride into musical stardom. Humble beginnings in the hometown of Leicester drove them to crave the taste of bigger and better things, which resulted in their debut album of 2007 peaking at number 4 in the UK album charts. With strong reviews from across the board, the band managed to craft the perfect foundation for their future in order to project themselves into the big time. To 2008 and Kasabian release album number 2, ‘Empire,’ which rocketed straight into the number 1 UK album chart position. To date, the album has
sold over 1 million copies worldwide, including 600,000 alone in the UK. Following this, ‘West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum’ in 2009, arguably the group’s most celebrated recording to date. Having been named album of the year by Q magazine in 2009, the record was also nominated for a Mercury Prize, along with once again positioning itself firmly in the number 1 UK chart spot. An album with bite and passion in abundance, this clever piece of craftsmanship allows listeners into the intricately delicate world of Kasabian. ‘Velociraptor!’ came next in 2011, yet again reeling in another number 1 UK hit. In its first week of release, the album sold over 90,000 copies, resulting in overall sales in 2011 of 279,000. With NME calling the record a ‘massive stop up from their previous albums,’ from this point onwards, it was safe to say that Kasabian were rock ‘n’ roll legends. This year saw the group’s most recent album released, ’48:13,’ alongside their massive headline performance at Glastonbury Festival 2014. And we thought we’d had a busy couple of years!
SHEFFIELD’S ALT-ROCK HEROES TO HEADLINE WEMBLEY ARENA By Kt Evans
It is often more than easy to forget quite how important Sheffield really is for the international music industry. Stemming way back into the early 1980’s, the Steel City has been home to genre defying bands and musicians, all prepared to stamp Sheffield well and truly on the landmark music map. Alternative rock group Bring Me The Horizon fit perfectly into this mould, preparing for their headline show at London’s Wembley Arena on Friday 5th December. So what do we already know about Bring Me The Horizon? Kick starting their career back in 2004, the five piece underwent a series of line-up changes, however seem now to be settled on their strongest set up to date. Having released their fourth studio album, ‘Sempiternal’ in April 2013, fans are now eagerly anticipating new material to be released from the BMTH camp. Their sound, although taking a matured shift from gritty metalcore to a more polished electronic infused alt rock feel, has won fans from across the world, resulting in countless main stage performances at some of the world’s most infamous summer music festivals. Not bad to say they performed in the
small room at Corporation Nightclub in Sheffield to only 50 people… Now bolstering up for the performance of their entire career, Bring Me The Horizon will perform at London’s Wembley Arena on 5th December. Selling out tickets in a matter of minutes, this cornerstone showcasing will fail not to project the head bangers into musical legends status. Their last performance in the UK came in the form of Download Festival 2014, summoning over 80,000 people to their main stage action, so if you are one of the lucky ones to have grabbed yourself a ticket, prepare for a ridiculously special show indeed. Sheffield has a fair amount to thank Bring Me The Horizon for. Not only have the members all stayed true to their hometown, the five piece remain loyal to our city whilst continuing to hold onto that ever-so-special Northern charm. They’ve allowed the city to be recognised in an alien genre, putting Sheffield back on the map within a style of music it has failed to feature. BMTH are one of our cities finest exports, so for that we wish them a proper Northern ‘good luck’ for their Wembley Arena performance. Check out www.bringmethehorizon.co.uk for all the latest.
Kasabian will be performing at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena on 13th December 2014. Check out their website www.kasabian.co.uk for full details.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker
I’ve had some pleasing news this week; after leaving my previous post at Marukyu, I’ve since been invited to join the team at Vardis Tackle to help promote their extensive range of specimen fish products. Personally, I’m extremely flattered to have been asked, I had been ‘sounded out’ by a couple of other companies which perhaps wouldn’t have suited my angling, so wouldn’t have been right for me (or them!) but sometimes, an opportunity is just too good to pass up! Find out more about Vardis at www.vardistackle.co.uk or check them out on social media... you won’t be disappointed! I’ve returned to the club water which has caused me so many recent problems this week. As you know, I’ve had a run of tough blanks in my quest for pike recently, but I’d heard some good fish had been caught, so I set out to try and catch one too! It was at this point I found myself in a dilemma of sorts. The pike I’d heard about had been taken on livebaits; as an advocate of catch and release, an angler, and therefore a conservationist, I struggle to justify the use of coarse fish livebaits. Without doubt, they are probably the most effective predator bait going, and I’m not squeamish about hooking them, but does it sit well with you? I know it doesn’t with me, and I can probably count the number of times I’ve ever used them on one hand, but having thought about it, I decided to give it a go. Problem number one is catching a suitable livebait! A few minutes with a tiny jigged lure usually results in dozens of suitably sized perch, but after a spell of rain, it took me almost an hour to tempt a couple of worthy samples which could be considered as bait. Problem number two is then deciding exactly where to put it as the pike have been known to Superbly located for Holidays & Short Stays Quality furnished log cabins, sleep up to 6. WiFI Friendly. shoal up in this particular water, so get it wrong and I could be waiting all day! I eventually chose an area with plenty of cover; an overhanging tree, some reeds and an underwater shelf all looked likely spots, so my small perch was hooked through the wrist of the tail and lightly nicked under the dorsal fin before casting underarm to settle beneath my float. There is something mesmerising about watching a floatfished livebait and imagining the scene beneath the water. We have all seen ‘Jaws’ and watched as the mighty fish tows yellow barrels across the surface before pulling them under, and for me it’s always a bit like that, but on a much smaller scale! (I can but hope!) The bright red float bounced around the swim for a short while, the perch obviously pulling hard to escape the resistance, before it suddenly stopped, then changed direction with some urgency. Had the perch seen a pike stalking through the gloom? It must have done, because seconds the surface exploded in spray as a pike snaffled my perch and took off up the lake. I wound down to set the hooks and gently played a small jack pike to the waiting net; it wasn’t big, but it was in pristine condition, and more importantly, my first fish in my new Vardis team colours... Having returned the pike safely, I looked into my bucket ready to select a new livebait, but couldn’t bring myself to snatch up another perch and send it off to its likely demise. I’m still not sure I’m ready to adopt livebaiting as a regular tactic, and, although it worked on this occasion, it just doesn’t seem to sit well with me...what about you?

The County Senior League ended November with 18 games, which led to new leaders in both the Premier Division and First Division. Premier Division Swinton Athletic climbed back to the top of the Premier Division, with a 4-1 away win over Swallownest Miners Welfare. Ryan Doxey scored all four goals for Swinton, as they ended a run of three league games without a win. They lead the way by a point, and have played a game less than their nearest rivals Houghton Main. Jubilee Sports are up to third place following a 4-1 away win over bottom side Joker FC. Matt Turner starred for Jubilee at the Bill Chafer Youth Centre scoring three times. Last years’ champions Handsworth Parramore’s winless run was extended to five league games, as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. Oughtibridge WMFC’s resurgence continued as they beat Wickersley FC 3-1 at home. Oughtibridge are up sixth place, having collected 11 points from the 15 available to them in November. Division One There was just one game in Division One, but it was a significant one, with Penistone Church Reserves claiming a 3-1 victory over Silkstone United to claim top spot. Adam Dewsnap, Tom Council and Bradley Kemp scored the goals for Penistone at the Memorial Ground. Division Two Jordan Marshall scored twice to inspire league leaders Byron House to a 5-1 away win over Sheffield Lane Top at the Civil Service Ground. Second placed Denaby Main registered their eighth win in 12 league games, with a comprehensive 6-1 home win over Kiveton Park. Denaby are eight points off Byron House’s lead with a game spare. Third placed Parkgate Reserves were held to a 1-1 draw away against bottom side Bawtry Town. Bwatry have now drawn three of their last five league games. Second bottom New Bohemians claimed only their second win of the season, as they beat Denaby United 4-2 at the SHU Sports Ground, with goals from Matt Daley, John Heritage, Scott Naseby and Craig Fox. Stacy Sharif scored twice to help Caribbean Sports to 2-0 win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves. Caribbean are eight league unbeaten, and are up fifth position in the table.

MILLERS MISS OPPORTUNITY
JORDAN Bowery’s third goal of the season helped Rotherham United drag themselves out of the Championship relegation zone but it was not enough to earn victory as Blackpool equalised late in the game. Despite a bright opening, the Millers were largely frustrated by the Seasiders until Bowery popped up from the bench to put the home side ahead. However, the Millers’ joy proved short-lived as sub Steve Davies took advantage of ‘keeper Adam Collin’s miscued clearance to give the Lancastrians a share of the spoils. Following their disappointing defeat at the hands of Birmingham City last weekend, the Millers reshuffled the pack by making seven changes to their starting line-up. The home side had a new look defence with Scottish international Kirk Broadfoot recalled to face his former club at the heart of the Rotherham defence as Leeds loanee Scott Wootton and Manchester United’s Reece James were handed their Millers’ debuts in the full-back berths. Midfielder Paul Green was also recalled as gaffer Steve Evans decided to freshen up the Millers’ attacking options with Argentinian winger Emmanuel Ledesma expected to provide the ammunition for an all-changed strikeforce of Leicester forward Tom Lawrence and Matt Derbyshire. The Millers were quick off the blocks and following fine approach play involving Lawrence and James, Ben Pringle delivered a tantalising centre which had visiting skipper Peter Clarke at full stretch as he almost deflected the ball towards his own goal. Moments later, Rotherham again attacked with menace and following hard work by Lawrence to win possession on the edge of the box, Ledesma dragged a shot across the face of goal which agonisingly missed the outstretched leg of Derbyshire, who flung himself goalwards in an attempt to notch his first league goal of the campaign. Lawrence was proving a handful for the Seasiders in the early stages and he got on the wrong side of the Blackpool rearguard following a punt forward but his instinctive effort was blocked by a retreating
ROVERS SHARE SPOILS Paul Dickov named an unchanged team for the first time this season looking to make it back to back wins in Sky Bet league 1. Steve Davis’ Crewe Alexandra - without a win in 5 league games were the hosts.Rovers got the game underway and carved out a couple of half chances, an early header by Tyson goes past the post and Curtis Main links up well with Keegan, his shot with the outside of his right foot goes over the bar. Rovers had the best of the possession in the opening 10 minutes and on the 9th Coppinger shoots towards the top corner but Garratt produces a great save to deny the Rovers captain. The resulting corner delivered deep, found Tyson unmarked choosing to hit it first time meant he blasted it over the bar. The next twenty five minutes was played at a cruising pace without a notable chance, until on the 29th minute the ball found its way to IKPEAZU 15 yards out whose low shot took a deflection past Johnstone to give Crewe the lead. The referee produces the first yellow card of the game on 36 minutes after Butler mistimed a tackle on half way, the resulting free kick allowed Ajose to take the ball down with a clear shot on goal but put it wide of the post.Rovers looked to make thing level but Garratt’s goal remained unthreatened despite having a healthy amount of possession going into the break.
defender before a sweeping ball forward saw James control superbly before paving the way for the Leicester loanee to cut inside before unleashing a rising effort which was superbly parried to safety by Joe Lewis. Despite the Millers being in the ascendancy, Blackpool almost stunned the home faithful with their first foray of note when Tom Kennedy worked a crossing position to float a delicate centre which was met by the head of Nile Ranger, who steered a header towards the bottom corner but Adam Collin showed fleet of foot to shuffle across his goal to parry the ball to safety. Normal service was resumed when Ledesma fired a speculative effort from distance which was deflected behind before Lawrence showed fantastic technique to fire the resultant corner with pace and whip which had Lewis backtracking nervously as the ball fizzed narrowly wide of the target. Moments later, Ledesma and Lawrence almost combined to great effect but the visitors got back in numbers’ before Richie Smallwood’s eye-of-a-needle pass gave Lawrence a sight of goal but he fluffed his lines when he blazed over the bar. The Millers were temporarily short-handed as Broadfoot had to leave the field with what appeared to be a shoulder injury and with Icelandic international Kari Arnason waiting to join the fray, Kennedy swung a delightful centre which saw Ranger tower above the makeshift defence to bundle a header which narrowly cleared the crossbar. With half-time approaching, Green became the first to see yellow when he cynically hauled back Jacob Murphy as he raced towards the home goal. Following the restart, Green almost turned from villain to hero when his delicate centre almost saw Derbyshire sneak behind the visitors’ defence but Clarke stuck out a leg to divert the ball away from the ex-Olympiakos striker. Moments later, Lawrence dribbled a low effort from distance which was comfortably gathered by Lewis before Arnason’s error presented Chris Eagles with the chance to strike a bobbling effort which stung the palms of Collin, who spilled the ball initially before the danger was snuffed out. Just before the hour mark, Jamie O’Hara struck a long range effort which had Collin scrambling across goal as it whistled narrowly wide of the upright before Pringle fired a dangerous centre which evaded all the home runners. The Millers missed a gilt-edged chance to break the deadlock after Derbyshire was flattened by Clarke giving Ledesma the opportunity to curl the resultant free-kick into the path of Green, who was in acres of
space but he was unable to steer the ball goalwards as the ball flashed wide of the target. Moments later, Green had another half-chance after the Seasiders’ failed to clear decisively but his goalbound shot was bravely blocked by Clarke before Ledesma became the next to incur the wrath of the referee as he was carded for upending Murphy. With the game in the balance, the Millers were indebted to Arnason for keeping the scores level as he prevented Eagles from sneaking behind the home defence following Kennedy’s delightful cross before Wootton showed bravery to throw himself infront of Davies’ shot from the edge of the box moments later. With the game entering the final quarter hour, Rotherham made the breakthrough when they turned defence into attack with the blink of an eye. There looked little danger until Ledesma’s flicked ball over the top caught the visitors’ rearguard at sixes and sevens and the ball was flicked on by Derbyshire into the path of Bowery, who showed composure to cut inside the retreating defence before drilling a low effort which beat the outstretched hand of Lewis to find the bottom corner of the net. The Millers’ joy almost proved short-lived when sub Nathan Delfouneso made something out of nothing as he ghosted in from the left flank but his effort from the edge of the box sailed narrowly over the bar. Moments later, Clarke headed over before the Seasiders silenced the home crowd as they dragged themselves back on level terms with five minutes remaining. A long punt forward by the visitors looked innocuous enough but with the Rotherham defence turned and with Davies in hot pursuit, Collin wanted to take charge but he made a hash of his attempted clearance as he missed the ball completely and Davies pounced the slide the ball into the unguarded net despite the last-gasp efforts of Morgan and Arnason to keep the ball out. The Millers responded bravely and Green’s floated ball saw sub Alex Revell tower above his marker to plant a header which had Lewis backtracking nervously as it narrowly cleared the crossbar before Pringle’s superb corner saw Wootton rise highest to power a downward header which was cleared off the line by a well-stationed defender. In stoppage time, David Perkins fired a rasping effort over before Rotherham’s frustration boiled over when Pringle tripped Eagles in full flow in the dying seconds as both sides’ had to settle for a point each.
Half Time – Crewe Alexandra 1-0 Doncaster Rovers The second half started in a similar fashion to the first until a corner on 51 minutes falls to Keegan on the edge of the area who’s low strike took a deflection off Coppinger, also taking the pace off the shot for it then to be easily smothered by Garratt. The sluggish pace continued and 8 minutes later Rovers invited Nicky Ajose to shoot from 30 yards but from that distance struggled to keep his shot down, constantly rising over Johnstone’s crossbar. On 62 minutes, Ikpeazu manages to turn Andy Butler high up the pitch, running 35 yards with the ball before shooting at a comfortable height for Johnstone to make the save. Rovers continued to plug away in search of an equaliser but often dispossessed until Curtis Main on the turn, 22 yards out struggled to keep his shot down, firing high over the bar. 77 minutes Rovers substitute Forrester finds space 25 yards out, not closed down by the Alex defence hits a dipping shot, he watches his effort go agonisingly over Garratt’s crossbar. A corner to the visitors with eleven minutes left, delivered by Forrester found McCullough who headed it goalwards for James Coppinger to smash it home from inside the six yard area to make it all level. With 7 minutes added time Forrester shoots from 22 yards again with a dipping effort, this time deflects for a Rovers corner, allowing Rovers to apply late pressure seeking a winning goal. Despite several dangerous crosses and plenty of stoppage time possession the visitors had to settle for a point that for a long period of the game didn’t look like it was coming. Rovers captain rifled home the second half equaliser to earn a fair point

BLADES NEWS2014/15 ALL SQUARE AGAIN FOR BLADES AT LANE Friday night’s fifth v sixth clash in Sky Bet League One was understandably a close affair. United were below par in the first half but recovered to earn a point in the second half against a Notts County team unbeaten on the road this season. Chief Clough made two changes with Higdon and CampbellRyce returning to the starting line-up as Alcock missed out and Flynn dropped to the bench. Also amongst the substitutes were McNulty, Adams and Kieran Wallace, the latter two recently signed from Ilkeston. O’Grady, signed on Thursday, was left out due to injury. Who would fill the right-back role would have been question for a number of fans ahead of kick-off but it was soon clear that Basham would fill
in - Baxter dropped into midfield to allow Higdon to lead the front line. Basham was involved quite a lot early on. He linked up with Campbell-Ryce on a couple of occasions and drilled in a cross which was too powerful for Murphy on nine minutes. The new right-back was also involved in a mix-up with Howard which presented Notts with their first chance but Petrasso’s shot at the Blades goalkeeper was weak. Chances were severely limited in the opening half hour, McEveley’s header was easy for Carroll and Howard gathered at the second attempt after Jones was allowed to run at the Blades defence. Scougall’s tracking back was applauded on a couple of occasions but a set-piece opened

United up and handed Notts the lead on 31 minutes. Jones delayed his corner but his flat delivery to the back post beat Howard and EDWARDS netted with a calm side-foot volley from close range. Following the vital goal, Notts were happy to sit bodies behind the ball and make it particularly hard for United to make inroads. The only other chance of note was a free-kick on 38 minutes but a smash from McEveley struck the wall and the rebound from Baxter was wide. With boss Clough’s half-time words ringing in their ears, the Blades started the second period on the front foot. Campbell-Ryce tried to catch out Carroll at the front post and Baxter could not get on the end of Higdon’s head down. Murphy put Hollis on the back foot but the subsequent shot was at Carroll and, on 58 minutes, Baxter curled over from the edge of the box. On 64 minutes the Blades went close again when Campbell-Ryce’s cross found Basham unmarked but his header was clawed away by Carroll. A double change with 20 minutes to go saw Flynn and McNulty replace Doyle and Higdon. A couple of opportunities were then instrumental in the space of a couple of minutes. On the break, Dumbuya found McLaughlin in acres of space in the middle of the goal but McEveley
raced across and made a decisive block and within minutes the Blades were level. Harris delivered from the left and MURPHY’s deftest of touches with his head beat Carroll. Despite the goal, Notts continued their tactic of slowing the game down and United remained the offensive force. Baxter and McNulty linked up but Scougall’s shot hit the legs of Carroll and Reed replaced the tiring Baxter with five minutes to go. With the visitors tiring, McNulty’s flicked header from Flynn’s cross was wide and five minutes of added time was a more pleasing sight for Blades fans. However, with Notts content to continue to slow the action down, the only chance of note came from Reed and Murphy linking up but Flynn was unable to find the target and the referee’s whistle followed soon after. Blades: Howard, Harris, Basham, Doyle (Flynn 69), Murphy, Scougall, Baxter (Reed 85), McEveley, CampbellRyce, Higdon (McNulty 69), McCarthy. Unused: McGahey, Turner, Adams, K. Wallace.
CLOUGH FRUSTRATED
Blades boss Nigel Clough praised United’s secondhalf performance in Friday’s 1-1 draw with Notts County, but was understandably frustrated to concede from a corner again. Jamie Murphy’s bullet header earnt the hosts a deserved point, after County defender Mike Edwards has volleyed the Magpies in front from a Gary Jones delivery with Mark Howard making a rare error from the corner. But Clough was encouraged with what he saw after the interval, although poor decision making in the final third was his main frustration post-match. The Gaffer said: “In the second-half we were spirited, played with urgency and created enough chances and opportunities to win the game. But it is worrying that it takes us falling behind to another
poor goal in the first-half of a game, to make us start playing on the front foot. We lacked that bit of composure and quality with the final pass in the second-half and we were turning down chances to cross the ball as the game progressed and that drives us mad.” Of his goalkeeper and the performance of the visitors, Clough added: “Mark Howard came in at half-time, held his hands up and apologised, he simply mis-judged the flight of the ball and unfortunately we were punished on another day we get away with it. You can see why Notts County like Oldham last Saturday are doing well and unbeaten on the road though, They stop you playing first and foremost then are a real danger on the break and from set-pieces as they proved.”

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY
OWLS NEWS2014/15 GOALS AT LAST AS OWLS TAKE POINTS Wednesday returned to winning ways at Hillsborough on Saturday, with Stevie May hitting both goals to down Wigan. The visitors struck first through Chris McCann in the first half but the lead was immediately wiped out by May. And the Scot found the target again after the resumption to hand the Owls a welcome home success. The Owls and the Latics were looking for a return to winning ways and something had to give if the game was to produce a victor. And it was Wednesday out of the traps the quicker as Atdhe Nuhiu headed over the crossbar following good wing work from Royston Drenthe. It seemed the Owls would hit the front on 17 minutes when Jose Semedo struck from distance but the ball smashed against the inside of the post and ex-Owl Scott Carson parried Chris Maguire’s strike to safety from the rebound. Then the game exploded into life with back to back goals. First, on 25 minutes, the Latics stole into the lead against the run of play. James McLean
swung in a dangerous corner and McCann headed home with some aplomb from six yards. But with the game barely having restarted, May stroked home after a neat feed from Nuhiu to cancel out the advantage in an instant. That positive response visibly buoyed the Owls and they almost went 2-1 up on the half-hour mark but for a fine Carson save when Jeremy Helan burst through on the angle. The visitors had an excellent chance themselves before the break, with MacLean finding acres of space down the left side of the area but blasted into the side-netting. Wigan started the second period with purpose and Lewis
McGugan cleared a MacLean header off the line five minutes in before McCann volleyed over from six yards. But Wednesday grew back into the game and after knocking on the door, broke through on 72 minutes to fire the winner. Chris Maguire delivered a perfect ball into the danger zone and May sprang high to head home after the ball bounced off both posts and just over the line. It was no more than May and Wednesday deserved following recent ill fortune and the hosts hung on to post their first win since September. Owls: Westwood, Palmer, Loovens, Lees, Helan, Maguire, Semedo, McGugan, Drenthe (Lavery 89), Nuhiu, May
HOME JOY FOR OWLS AS STEVIE MAY DOUBLES UP
Stuart Gray insists the Owls must build on their weekend win and strike again at Blackburn next time out. Wednesday came from behind to beat Wigan 2-1 on Saturday, with Stevie May’s brace doing the damage. Now Gray says the good work must continue at Ewood Park. “I have set the players the challenge. We have to go Blackburn and win the game and build on what we achieved on Saturday. The character in this squad and the spirit is second to none and I have every confidence in this group of players. It’s normal in football when you go ten games
without a win that some people will say there are problems in the camp or divisions in the dressing room. But I know this group inside out and I see what they have every day. There are no problem here. That’s why I knew that a win was just around the corner. Now instead of being asked about no wins in ten, I can be asked about the fact we are unbeaten in four.” Stuart Gray praised the impact of Stevie May after the Scot fired a double to down Wigan at Hillsborough on Saturday. The brace came off the back of the striker’s international call for the Scotland senior squad. Gray said: “Stevie was
a ‘Johnny on the Spot’ today and I’m pleased for him because he deserves it. He’s had some bad luck recently and especially last week when he hit the bar and the post at Huddersfield with the same shot. So when the ball hits both posts today I thought it was ‘Groundhog Day’ so I looked across at the linesman and obviously I was delighted to see the flag go up. So I’m really pleased for the boy, I work with him every day and not a lot of players get through the same amount of work as Stevie does. He won his first cap for Scotland recently and that will do Stevie the world of good.”
ONE FOR THE FANS SAYS GRAY With the Owls posting their first victory since September, Stuart Gray has dedicated the Wigan success to the supporters. Wednesdayites stayed squarely behind the head coach and team during the recent run that extended to ten games without a win. He said: “That was for the fans. They have been magnificent and we are all extremely grateful for their support. You can’t fool the supporters that is for sure. The players have to tick all
the boxes in terms of application and work rate and they did that today. That’s what the supporters expect and

rightly so. I always say to the players, if we are going to lose a football match, we do it on ability and never application.”
