TAKE THAT ADD THIRD SHEFFIELD DATE TO THEIR NEW UK TOUR

Due to extraordinary demand, Take That have confirmed that they are adding four new dates to their 2015 tour which was announced last month and sold out in a matter of hours, including an extra date at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena on Wednesday 24th June 2015, in addition to their 1st and 2nd June dates. Four years since the band’s last record-breaking tour Progress Live, next April will see Mark Owen, Gary Barlow and Howard Donald commence a 37-date UK tour. The band also scored their thirteenth No.1 single last week with ‘These Days’, their first since 2008 and followed-up yesterday with news that ‘III’ had also debuted at the top of the UK album chart, making it their sixth No.1 studio album. Take That are defined by some of the most memorable and spectacular live productions in UK music history and their fans can now look forward to an extra four magical nights in Glasgow, London, Birmingham and Sheffield on sale at 9:00am on Thursday 11th December. Previous tours have included everything from aerialists, circus performers, a wall of water, holograms, a giant elephant and on the last tour a 60ft robot. The band’s shows have never failed to excite and surprise their audience and next year’s are sure to be no exception. ‘We’ve always been very proud of our live shows and are very excited to be touring again next year. Playing live is something we love the most about what we do and we’re looking forward to putting on the most amazing show we can. It will have been four years since our last tour so we’re really keen to get back out on the road to play some of our biggest songs from the last twenty years alongside our new ones. The last time Take That released an album was in 2010, when they were a five piece: Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Jason Orange, Mark Owen and Robbie Williams. Take That have had seven Number One albums, 13 Number One singles, sold over 30 million albums, won six Ivor Novellos, eight BRITs and sold over seven million concert tickets. ‘PICTURE SHEFFIELD’ EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR One of the first picture libraries launched in the country is celebrating its 15th anniversary by compiling a slice of Sheffield’s rich history for its first ever calendar. Picture Sheffield’s 2015 calendar features a dozen images of Sheffield from the collections at Sheffield Archives and Local Studies Library – a quick peek of the 60,000 pictures now added to the archive’s website. ONE POUND FESTIVE FARES MAKE SHEFFIELD NOW OPEN HEALTHIER 1-7 Charles Street Special bus services will run in Sheffield on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day for a festive fare of just £1 per journey. The First and Stagecoach bus services, run as part of Sheffield Bus Partnership and funded by Sheffield City Council, will operate on selected routes on Boxing Day from 7am until around 6.30pm and on New Year’s Day between 8am and 5.30pm. In the weeks leading up to Christmas the Partnership representatives will be handing out free information in the city centre to show how easy it is to get to the main destinations across the city and offering the chance to enter a free festive prize draw. The extra services mean that buses will run every day over the festive period, except on Christmas Day, giving people a convenient way to get where they need to be. “We know how important it is that people without access to private transport can get out and see friends and family at Christmas; that is why we have worked hard to try and maintain a bus service

over the Christmas period at an affordable fare.” The Sheffield Bus Partnership was launched two years ago and in that time over 1.57 million extra bus journeys have been made in the city. There have been 4.9 million (7.9 per cent) more fare paying passengers as punctuality and reliability of the services exceeded the targets. Over £4.5 million has been invested in infrastructure, there are 166 newer buses on the roads and reduced fares are benefitting at least 60 per cent of adult fare paying passengers. Ben Gilligan, Managing Director for First in South Yorkshire, said: “The services we ran on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, last year were well used and we are pleased to be able to provide these important services once again.” Paul Lynch, Managing Director for Stagecoach in Sheffield, said: “We understand that our customers still like to get around using the bus over Christmas, particularly on Boxing Day and the Christmas sales period. With this in mind partners continue to work together to provide the people of Sheffield with a convenient, realistic travel option.” Revised bus timetables will operate in Sheffield from Wednesday 24 December 2014 until Friday 2 January 2015. In many cases, services on weekdays will follow their usual Saturday timetables. Sheffield Bus Partnership brings together Sheffield City Council, local bus operators First South Yorkshire, Stagecoach in Sheffield, Sheffield Community Transport and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) in a bid to improve the city’s bus offer. TRAMLINES 2015 EARLYBIRD TICKETS SELL OUT IN RECORD TIME The Sheffield inner-city festival offers music-lovers the chance to snap up discounted tickets before its first announcement. Fans of Tramlines have taken advantage of the latest offer from the festival, with its £20 super-earlybird weekend tickets having sold out in record time, before any acts have even been announced for its 2015 event. Having seen how popular the tickets have proven to be, the organisers have now made a second batch of discounted tickets available, priced at just £25, making them even cheaper than 2014's tickets. These will be available until the organisers make their first lineup announcements at the start of February, at which point the festival's full-price tickets will go on sale, priced at £30. Tramlines festival director, Sarah Nulty, said: "We've been overwhelmed by the response from fans so far. The team are hard at work behind closed doors putting 2015's lineup together, and we can't wait to share the news with you. We've already got some really exciting acts lined up, and I'm sure that 2015 is going to be our biggest party yet." The passes will give ticket-holders access to all three days of Tramlines, which returns

for its seventh year from 24th to 26th July. The 2015 event comes hot on the heels of Tramlines' biggest year yet, with performances from Public Enemy, Sister Sledge, The Cribs, Katy B and over 200 other artists having made 2014's festival a truly unforgettable weekend. As in 2014, tickets are available to purchase from the festival's own website, while Sheffielders can also pay a visit to The Harley, the University of Sheffield's Student Union box office, the Leadmill, City Hall or o2 Academy to pay in person.

CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, have this week announced reaching 600 pubs listed as Assets of Community Value, following a campaign to encourage local groups to register pubs as ACVs. However CAMRA say with 31 pubs still closing per week more needs to be done to protect pubs - with the Government letting communities down by allowing conversion of pubs to supermarkets without planning permission. “The Government introduced Assets of Community Value to help communities retain valued community assets such as pubs by providing an opportunity to bid for the property if the owner intends to sell. But the scheme is undermined by rules that allow pubs to be converted into supermarket convenience stores and a wide range of other retail uses, without any need for a planning application.” Tom Stainer, CAMRA Head of Communications. Evidence collated by CAMRA earlier this year revealed that 2 pubs a week are converted into supermarket convenience stores, which led to the launch of their ‘Pubs Matter’ campaign which asks the Government to close the current loopholes and ensure

planning permission is always required to convert a pub to other uses. “The fact pubs are the most listed community asset shows just how much people value their local pub. It is therefore hugely disappointing that the Government won’t act to close planning loopholes which allow developers to convert pubs to other uses without the requirement for planning permission.” “Planning permission is required to convert a convenience store into a pub but no permission is required to convert a pub into a convenience store. The lack of protection for pubs is a glaring anomaly in the English planning system which needs to be corrected. It is surely not right that a supermarket convenience store is given greater planning protection than a valued community pub.” Asset of Community Value Case Study: Save the Golden Harp The Golden Harp in Maidenhead was converted into a Tesco supermarket earlier this year. The Golden Harp was a thriving local community pub until Tesco announced plans to convert the property. After an 18 month campaign and the group successfully listing the pub as an Asset of Community Value,

the pub was converted into a Tesco supermarket in June 2014. Save the Golden Harp campaigner, Mark Newcombe said: “This case remains a constant reminder of the ineffectiveness of the current legislation and the failure of local democracy to protect community asset” CAMRA’s Head of Communications, Tom Stainer added “Local people are denied a say in the future of their own communities, and this is undermining the Government’s stated aim to empower local communities to protect local facilities such as pubs. Unquestionably two of the most iconic structures of British music, NME music magazine is teaming up with live venue Leadmill to bring together the NME Awards Tour showcasing, coming to Sheffield on 19th February 2015. With the help of Palma Violets, The Fat White Family, The Amazing Snakeheads and Slaves, this very special event is dedicated to the freshest, most current live bands on the upcoming radar. Since its very first issue way back on 7th March 1952, NME Magazine has grown to become the industries first port of call for forward thinking music lovers with a taste for ground breakingly fresh new talent. From Arctic Monkeys to Foo Fighters, The Strokes and Pulp, bands from across all ages have shared the pages of what has evolved into one of the best selling print magazines of all time. Sheffield is therefore exceptionally lucky to have the NME Awards tour brought to Leadmill on 19th February, with some emerging new breakthrough acts to spice up the cold winter months. First up, Palma Violets. Signed to Rough Trade Records, the three piece from London released their first full length album in February 2013, smashing their way

onto the scene ever since. They made up part of the NME Tour back in 2013 alongside Miles Kane and Django Django, so expect seasoned professions for your headlining act. Joining Palma Violets, The Fat White Family. Easily one of the most…bizarre band names we’ve heard for quite some time, the six piece form London released ‘Champagne Holocaust,’ their alternative full length record in 2014 and have since announced a full European string of tour dates throughout February 2015. The Amazing Snakeheads from Scotland also join the bill, who are currently undergoing a UK tour with The Jesus And Mary Chain. RISING SHEFFIELD STAR RECORDS DREAM EP Sheffield-based producer Squarehead (AKA Oliver Ledger) was recently given the opportunity to develop his dream EP at Red Bull Studios. The widely praised star spent time in the London studio space, which is regularly used by the likes of Jessie Ware, to collaborate with some of the UK’s top vocalists and take an alternative direction to sample based tunes. It was also the very first time Squarehead has ever worked with vocalists, and he was able to create three tracks with the sublime trio of Jenna G, Lauren Faith and Terri Walker for his incredible EP. The tracks, which include three vocals and one instrumental, were released on last Monday (08/12) and made freely available to listen and download. Squarehead says: “I feel I have been given an amazing chance to produce something quite different, working with three talented vocalists and also being able to record my EP in the Red Bull Studios. Jenna, Lauren and Terri were all brilliant to work with and I really feel we have created something special. I was a little bit nervous to start with as this was the first time I had worked with vocalists, but I’m happy with the results and hope people out there get downloading my EP for free.” Influenced by the Sheffield scene and also playing across garage, house, techno and disco, Squarehead has supported Eats Everything, B.Traits and Maya Jane Coles and he has received support from fellow Sheffield star Toddla T, as well as Annie Mac, Skream and many more. Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

An exceptional day on the banks this week, and one I’ve certainly enjoyed immensely. My chosen venue this week has been the River Dove which wends its way through Derbyshire countryside before eventually joining the mighty Trent much further downstream. I’d been incorrectly informed that the river had actually flooded in the days preceding my visit, but having checked the river levels online, thought it looked right for a bite, and plopped my tackle down just upstream of a well used bridge swim. My intention was to trot a stick float through the swirling waters and hopefully catch a few grayling, and with a cold nip in the air and bright sunshine, set up expecting to catch! I’ve been using some of the Sonik SK3 rods a lot this year; I’ve had everything from a 32lb cat fish, specimen bream and tench, plenty of carp in excess of 20lb and even pike which put plenty of strain on inferior tackle. The rods have stood up to everything I’ve thrown at them, and with a quivertip section and a ‘normal’ tip section, I’m spoilt for choice and options. I set up a 4bb stick float, attached ‘top and bottom’ with the shot strung down the line to allow the bait to fall naturally through the water as the float trots through. A pinch of maggots thrown in, and then the float was dropped on top and allowed to spin downstream with the freebies. Two white maggots on the hook and I was confident of getting the fish to feed. After almost an hour of trotting, changing both depth and shotting patterns to try and tease a bite, I gave up biteless and set the quivertip up. The 2oz tip was just enough in the flow, and a maggot feeder was loaded with a dozen maggots and cast slightly downstream before the line tightened and the feeder found a place of rest. Flicking in two or three maggots every five seconds or so, I tried to keep the feed going in hoping to attract fish from further down the river. Ten minutes later, and the tip quivered like a violin string being drawn by a bow, and then quickly whipped round as the first grayling of the day took a static bait. Quickly returned, another cast found the same spot with the same result... and again.... and again! They were feeding hard and I took a string of fish to around 1lb; admittedly not big, but all were immaculate and shone beautifully in the early morning sun. Then disaster! A passing angler (I use the term very loosely) wandered up and asked if I’d caught. His bright orange fluorescent jacket and skyline breaking clumsiness killed the swim for the next hour as he blundered through the undergrowth towards me and sat down heavily. Normally, I have no issue with any angler visiting my swim, but please show a little consideration! I returned to my constant feeding and eventually go the fish back in the swim. The grayling were dutifully obliging and continued to wolf down the maggots and be caught with startling regularity. I caught about forty fish before the swim went mysteriously quiet; I suspected pike, but had no proof, so changed to a lump of crust in the hope of a chub. of a chubby chevin, so loaded a size 8 Vardis Tackle classic boilie pattern hook and pinched an SSG shot a few inches down the line and let it swing down the river.... Wham! My first run through and the rod arched around as a fish grabbed the bait. A dull thump had me thinking chub, but a brilliantly coloured brown trout was the unlikely culprit and it fought hard all the way to the net. At around 3lb, it was a handsome fish indeed, and the next few casts bought half a dozen more, all of 2-3lb and again, in fine condition. As the trout were out of season, I decided to pack up and wander the bank for a while. I knew two anglers had occupied the peg above me, and one inhabited the peg below, but my queries were met with disappointed replies; the three anglers had shared only three fish between them all day! It was a weekend defined by cup competitions in the County Senior League, with the final U21 Cup Semi-Final and the League Cup 3rd Round all scheduled for Saturday afternoon. U21 Cup Semi-Final Finally after the third attempt, the U21 Cup Semi-Final between Athersley Recreation U21 and Wombwell Main U21 went ahead at Wombwell Main Cricket Ground. There was no doubt in the result though, as U21 Division high-flyers Athersley cruised to a 4-0 victory. Athersley will face last years’ winners Swallownest Miners Welfare U21 in the final on Thursday 18th December at the Memorial Ground, Penistone. League Cup 3rd Round Denaby United claimed the scalp of the round as they beat last years’ Premier Division winners Handsworth Parramore 3-2 at Old Road. It was an impressive result for the club in their debut season in the County Senior League. Possibly the game of the round came at Middlecliffe Lane, where last years’ cup finalists Houghton Main hosted Oughtibridge WMFC. There has been plenty of history between the two teams, as they helped define the Division One title race two years ago. The game lived up to the expectations as well, with the two sides all square at 3-3 at the end of 120 minutes. However, Oughtibridge clinched their place in the Quarter-Finals with a dramatic 5-3 win on penalties. Charlie Tunnard scored twice to inspire High Green Villa to a 4-1 home win over South Kirkby colliery. High Green have a decent cup pedigree, reaching the final only two years ago. Handsworth Parramore U21 were unnerved by Division Two high-flyers Parkgate Reserves, beating them 2-1 at Oliver’s Mount. Oliver Beaumont and Chris Howard scored the vital goals for Handsworth. Denaby Main beat Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley Reserves 9-3 at Tickhill Square. Shaw Lane will be fed up of the sight of Denaby, who also beat them 6-3 on the opening day of the league season. Joker FC put behind themselves their league troubles, to claim a 2-1 win over Athersley Recreation Reserves at the Bill Chafer Youth Centre.

The win is only Millmoor’s second of the season and their first since earlySeptember. Davy stretched their unbeaten run to three games, as they held Silkstone United to a 1-1 draw at Davy Sports Club. Division Two James O-Brien scored twice to help Byron House to their twelfth league win of the season, with a 4-1 victory over Frecheville Reserves at Warminster Road. Byron House’s lead at the top of the league is now 11 points. Caribbean Sports are up to fourth place, following an impressive 5-0 win over Sheffield Lane Top at the Civil Service Ground. Rayon Ramsey (2), Anthony Holmes, Deroy Williams and Leon Stocks were all on target for in-form Caribbean Sports who are now unbeaten in nine league games back to early-September. Maltby Main Reserves were 2-1 winners at home against Kiveton Park. Ryan Smith scored both of the goals for fifth placed Maltby. New Bohemians were 2-0 winners away to struggling Bawtry Town. The win takes New Bohemians up one place to fifth-from-thebottom, whilst Bawtry remain at the foot-ofthe-table.

U21 Division League leaders Houghton Main U21 were away winners against Davy U21. Orrin McIntyre, Josh Cornwall and Giorgio Williams made up the score-sheet for Houghton Main who lead the way by three points. League Cup ﬁnalists Swallownest Miners Welfare U21 stretched their unbeaten league run to four games, with a 2-1 win over Caribbean Sports at Caribbean Sports Club. Ryan Hall and Alex Lill were both on target for Swallownest. Tobi Nicols scored four times to help Bawtry Town U21 to a 5-0 home win over Denaby Premier Division Wombwell Main beat Stocksbridge Park United U21. STRONG PERFORMANCE SEES MILLERS RETURN FROM WALES WITH A POINT The Millers had to settle for a share of the spoils as they were held to a 0-0 draw by play-off chasing Cardiff City in Wales. Both sides lacked a cutting edge in the game at Cardiff City Stadium and were hindered in their effort to break the deadlock by two solid goalkeeping performances from Adam Collin and David Marshall. Steve Evans was forced to make two changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Blackpool last weekend, with Alex Revell and Kari Arnason coming in to replace the injured Kirk Broadfoot and Matt Derbyshire for the clash in Wales. Lee Frecklington was also omitted from the squad after sustaining an injury in the reserves in midweek. Emmanuel Ledesma tested the alertness of Marshall in the Cardiff goal after just two minutes had elapsed in Wales with a powerful volley from the edge of the box, which the Bluebirds stopper had to keep his eye on as it flew wide of his post. A free-kick from the right saw the hosts create their first half chance of the game, which saw Sean Morrison rise highest at the back post to head Peter Whittingham’s pinpoint cross just wide. The Millers almost had the opener from an unlikely source when Scott Wootton latched onto a knock down on the edge of the area before skipping past the goalkeeper, only to have his heavy touch cleared before he could apply the finish. It was the visitors again who almost broke the deadlock as the half-hour mark approached in Wales, a wicked delivery from Ben Pringle on the left that saw Revell’s unorthodox effort gathered by Marshall once more. The addition of Leicester City forward Tom Lawrence has looked a shrewd one since his arrival on loan deadline day, giving the Millers a different dimension in attack. His energy and persistence had given the Bluebirds cause for concern since the off and almost paid

HAPPY RETURNS FOR DICKOV IN FA CUP A late comedy goal was enough for Paul Dickov to snatch a win on his first return to his former club in the FA Cup 2nd Round. Rovers, unchanged from Tuesday night, made a bright start straight from the off. Curtis Main had an early chance from the penalty area but his deflected shot went over the bar. A few minutes later Rovers earned themselves a corner. Richie Wellens played it short to start a well worked training ground move but a tame shot from Kyle Bennett ended the attack as it floated straight into the hands of Paddy Kenny. The away side kept up the pressure with a great shot from Reece Wabara. The full-back cut inside and unleashed a fizzing effort with his left foot only for Kenny to deny Rovers once more. Despite the bright start, Oldham weren’t without their chances. In the 16th minute, a poor back pass from Andy Butler presented Daniel Philliskirk with a chance, however Sam Johnstone was alert to smother the ball at his feet. Two minutes later, Rovers were back at the right end of the pitch. Main delivered a lovely cross from the left-hand side, Theo Robinson latched onto the end of it but was denied by some brave goalkeeping from

dividends when he stole possession high up the pitch, before leathering a volley over the crossbar from 20 yards. John Brayford’s speculative strike from 30 yards was probably the most notable the hosts had mustered, but his daisycutter was easy for Adam Collin to smother at his near post to ensure the teams went into the break on level terms. The youthful exuberance of Lawrence was almost Cardiff’s undoing again after the restart with his industrious approach keeping the hosts’ rearguard on their toes. Five minutes after the break he picked the ball up on the corner of the box and shimmied clear of three defenders before unleashing a low strike on goal with Marshall on hand to deny him the opener. A free-kick 20 yards from goal provided the Millers’ next meaningful chance with Marshall stood debating whether Ledesma or Lawrence would strike it goalward. It was the on-loan Middlesbrough man that stepped up and rippled the side netting with a good curling effort that ﬂashed just wide with the goalkeeper well-beaten. The aerial threat of Kenwyne Jones had been nulliﬁed by the Millers’ defence from the outset, but he did give them a reason not to switch off when he rose highest to meet Sean Morrison’s cross in the six yard box. In a game where both sides were struggling to create any clear cut chances it was understandable when

Ledesma let fly from distance. The Argentinean winger’s thunderous drive from 20 yards had Marshall scampering across his goal to produce a wonderful flying save to keep it deadlocked at 0-0. The Millers then had Collin to thank for the scores remaining level when substitute Federico Macheda was released one-on-one before he guided the ball towards the far corner only to see an outstretched arm from the Millers’ stopper make the all important contact to divert the ball away from goal. Buoyed by Cardiff’s attacking intentions the visitors wasted no time in reminding the hosts that they were in town for all three points. Revell must have thought he’d scored when he found himself with acres of space to attack Richie Smallwood’s cross at the far post, but a fingertip from Marshall carried his header onto the crossbar and out of play. The game opened up after a flurry of chances but the visitors appeared to have taken the confidence from their series of attacks. A number of crosses from Noone caused problems before Craig Morgan was required to make a vital interception from a delivery from the opposite flank that had left Collin stranded with Macheda waiting to pounce behind him. In the end, neither side could compromise the opposition’s defence and Evans’ men collected an important point to edge them closer to Sky Bet Championship survival.

WE DESERVED THREE POINTS

Steve Evans’ side once again adopted a more patient style of build-up, and although Alex Revell led the line in place of Matt Derbyshire, the former Manchester United youngster believed the partnership worked well and doesn’t mind who he lines up against as long as he can keep his own shirt. “I don’t mind who plays up there alongside me because they’re all really good players here and although they (Derbyshire and Revell) are different, I feel we’ve gelled really well and there will be goals to come. There’s a real competition for places here so we’ve all got to continue to just play well. “That’s the point of me being out on loan, to play games. I want to be playing this kind of football rather than Under 21s games, so to come out and get some football is a big thing for me because it gets me experience at this level too.”

Rotherham United loanee Tom Lawrence was delighted with his side’s performance at Cardiff City on Saturday, but left South Wales disappointed not to come away with three points. The Millers enjoyed the majority of the play at the weekend, with Lawrence a key component in an attack that caused problems for last year’s Premier League outfit. “The lads are actually a bit gutted because we were pleased with how we played and felt like we deserved all three points, but if we continue to play like that we’ll be fine. We dominated the game from start to finish I thought, we played some nice football and in the end were just disappointed not to get a goal.” Kenny. The tempo of the match died off after the first 20 minutes and it wasn’t until the 32nd minute before Rovers had their next chance. A lobbed ball found Wellens unmarked in the area, he played a one-two with Robinson but his low shot was saved. Arguably the best chance of the half fell to Oldham in the 37th minute. Forte latched onto a through ball but was denied by Johnstone. The rebound was picked up by Jabo Ibehre who turned into space but managed to blast his shot over from 6 yards. This sparked Rovers into life. A speedy counterattack allowed Bennett to cross to James Coppinger who laid the ball off to Wellens. Unfortunately the midfielder skied it against his former side. Forte had the final chance of the half but could only blast it wide. Oldham started the half positively but had to wait until the 54th minute for their first real chance. A lovely delivery from Johnson from a free kick on the left found Elokobi unmarked but he headed over the bar. There was a rare clear-cut chance for Oldham in the 66th minute after a poor clearance from Johnstone on his weaker foot allowed the Latics a shot but the Man United loanee recovered well, palming the shot out for a corner. Forte found space on the wing in the 71st minute but his shot was poor and could only hit the side netting. The Rovers defence were limiting Oldham to any real chances and they appeared to become desperate. In the 71st minute a strike from Forte found the side netting and Liam Kelly blazed one over the bar.

The final 5 minutes were a different story and a frantic finish ensued. Arguably against the run of play Rovers stole the victory in the 86th minute. A great run on the left from Enda Stevens opened up space for the left-back to cross hard and low into the box. This caused all sorts of problems for Kenny who could only parry the ball into the area. Elokobi tried to make a clearance but blasted it into his own net. Oldham then hit back in an attempt to force a replay. First Forte tested Johnstone and in the final minute of added time, Kelly attempted the impossible as he attempted to lob the keeper from long range, narrowly missing the top of the bar. Rovers managed to hold on though and will be hoping for a big draw in Round 3.

BLADES NEWS2014/15 BLADES BREEZE INTO THE THIRD ROUND United’s FA Cup exploits continue as League Two Plymouth Argyle were on the end of an impressive second half display. Two second half penalties from Jose Baxter - after Plymouth had missed one - secured the third round place and Marc McNulty completed the victory, turning home a cross from Florent Cuvelier, who returned after an 11month injury lay-off. With McCarthy and O’Grady not allowed to play for the Blades in the FA Cup, chief Clough brought in Baxter and Higdon. There was a place on the bench for Belgian midﬁelder Cuvelier, who had been out of action since January with a cruciate knee problem. Both sides probed early looking for an advantage but defences looked solid. For the visitors Reid hit a shot across

goal and McEveley’s timely tackle prevented Mellor making progress. At the other end in the opening 10 minutes, Doyle’s 25-yard was wide and McCormick pushed Flynn’s shot out of the reach of Higdon. Flynn, operating at right-back once again, was back quickly to halt Kellett and Banton shot wide after he was handed a chance by Scougall’s misplaced pass. Blizzard’s 30-yard shot attracted the attention of Howard but was wide of the Kop goal. As half-time approached Flynn again cut in from the right but shot wide and late on an Alessandra free-kick from the edge of the box was a yard over Howard’s cross. McNulty replaced Campbell-Ryce for the start of the second half and the substitute almost raced on to a long Howard clearance

McEveley was adjudged to have fouled Alessandra but Reid wasted the penalty kick, firing wide. Mellor’s shot was blocked by Higdon before more drama as the clock ticked around to 55 minutes. Hartley was caught in possession and Purrington’s first foul on McNulty was outside the box but he continued to pull on the substitute, who was eventually felled 15 yards from goal. Referee Sutton pointed to the penalty spot and a chat with one of his assistants reaffirmed his view. BAXTER took responsibility for the spot-kick and drilled low and hard past McCormick. The penalty drama was not over. Seven minutes later and the Blades were awarded a second spotkick, this time Nelson adjudged to have pulled back Murphy as he was about to shoot. This time referee Sutton relied on his assistant to make the decision but the outcome was the same, BAXTER scoring with a low and hard effort. Blizzard’s half-volley was wide as Plymouth looked to get back into the game and Flynn got back to prevent Reid shooting after McEveley lost possession. Reed was introduced for Scougall and Baxter wasted a great hat-trick chance on 77 minutes.

Flynn sprinted away from Reid and Murphy found Baxter in space but the subsequent shot, with just McCormick to beat, was rolled wide. Baxter also had another opportunity but rammed a free-kick into the wall in the ﬁnal 10 minutes. Baxter’s chances of a hat-trick were curtailed when he was replaced with ﬁve minutes to go by Cuvelier - and both received a round of applause. Late on McNulty robbed Cox and shot wide with Cuvelier in space but the subs did combine to crown the victory on 90 minutes. After linking up with Murphy, Cuvelier delivered a near post cross and McNULTY slotted past McCormick. Injury-time was irrelevant as the Blades comfortably eased into the third round. Blades: Howard, Harris, Basham, Flynn, Doyle, Murphy, Scougall (Reed 76), Baxter, McEveley, Campbell-Ryce (McNulty 45), Higdon. Unused: McGahey, Turner, Kennedy, Khan, Cuvelier.

Nigel Clough praised the Blades for their second-half showing in Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle in the second round of the FA Cup. Relfecting on the victory, the Gaffer remarked: “It is nice to progress to the third round again, but it wasn’t easy, Plymouth made it hard for us, they came and give it ago and we were flat in the first-half. “But having survived the penalty miss, the lads reacted positively and once Jose (Baxter) tucked away our first penalty the confidence that was lacking a bit, came back and was clear to see. “We have no complaints about their penalty, all three challenges were penalties in our opinion

and thankfully we got three long overdue breaks otherwise it could have turned out differently. “Once we got in front we played at a quicker tempo with more freedom and in the end it could have been more than three, we created several chances and Jose should have had his hat-trick. “It was an important win and it gives us something to build on at Fleetwood and beyond that into the hectic Christmas schedule.” United face QPR away in the third round with the game ot be played over the weekend of 3/4 January

OWLS NEWS2014/15 LAST MINUTE STUNNER WINS OWLS 3 POINTS

The Owls produced a controlling display against in-form Blackburn and struck at the last to earn all three points. Substitute Claude Dielna – only on the pitch for one minute – hit a long ranger that flew in with the aid of a deflection to seal a dramatic win. It was no more than Wednesday deserved as in terms of ball retention they emerged on top and proved worthy winners overall. The goal at the death matched the one at the start as Kieran Lee scored his first of the season early in the contest but Alex Baptiste promptly levelled for the hosts. And just as it seemed the game was heading for a stalemate, Dielna suddenly settled matters with a stunning finish in front of the travelling hoards. They saw the perfect start too as their team hit the front inside three minutes. Stevie May took a long ball over the top from Liam Palmer into his stride and the Scot’s effort was saved by Jason Steele but Lee stabbed home the rebound. Wednesday went on

to dominate only to be stung by a counter attack on 16 minutes. The hosts could count themselves fortunate too as they profited from a deflection off Jeremy Helan before the ball eventually landed to Baptiste, whose skewed shot found a way past Keiren Westwood. The Owls were undaunted and went close through May, who again burst free on goal but this time Steele made the save. Wednesday then suffered a blow on the half-hour when Lewis McGugan clashed heads with Lee Williamson and received treatment for a good five minutes before being stretchered off. And it was almost a double setback as moments later Jordan Rhodes got a strong

connection on Craig Conway’s cross but the hitman’s header struck the post. Westwood saved well at the near post from Shane Duffy four minutes into the second half and, just like the ﬁrst, the Owls went on to boss possession. Blackburn struggled to get out of their own half, prompting Gary Bowyer to make a double substitution on 66 minutes. And the move certainly breathed new life into the home side – Ryan Tunnicliffe unleased a piledriver that Westwood tipped acrobatically over the crossbar. Then, deep into stoppage time and out of nowhere, Dielna marked his introduction with a blistering hit from 25 yards that gave Wednesday back to back wins following last Saturday’s home triumph over Wigan.

NO BETTER FEELING

After Saturday’s dramatic win over Blackburn, Chris Maguire has said there is no better feeling than snatching a last-minute winner. The dressing room was naturally in high spirits following Claude Dielna’s 93rd minute stunner and Maguire said it has left the squad full of conﬁdence. Wednesday are now four points off the play-offs and Maguire said: “There’s no better feeling in a dressing room than winning a game in the 90th minute.

“To get that is a big feeling and now it’s two wins in a week. “We want to keep that winning feeling. The manager said not many teams will go to Ewood Park and get three points.” Maguire has taken a lot of conﬁdence from Wednesday’s displays against Wigan and Blackburn as the busy Christmas period begins. He told swfc.co.uk: “I thought we came out of the trap early doors at Blackburn and they couldn’t get to grips with us for the ﬁrst 20-30

minutes. “We kept ﬁghting right until the end, it was a great win and a great goal. “We got the ball down, played well and they couldn’t cope at times. They’ve obviously got a lot of talent up front and they tried to come at us near the end. “But we handled that and defended well as teams. “It’s around about this time when there are a lot of games and you want to get a run going. If we keep this momentum going, we will climb the league.”

GRAY LOOKING FORWARD TO CITY RETURN

Stuart Gray is looking forward to locking horns with Manchester City for the second time this season. The Owls were paired with the Premiership champions in the third round of the FA Cup on Monday night, with the tie serving as a repeat of the League Cup clash earlier this term.
