LUCY SPRAGGAN TO LEAD THE WORLD’S LARGEST CHILDREN’S CHOIR
The largest Children’s choir in the world, Young Voices are very excited to announce that Lucy Spraggan will be leading choirs comprising over 120,000 children and their music teachers over a 19-day arena tour. Lucy will be joining approx 7,000 singing school children every night, including 5 dates at the Motorpopint Arena Sheffield from Monday 19th to Friday 23rd January. Tickets for Young Voices at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield are available in person at the Arena box office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk Tickets purchased online or through the ticket hotline on 0114 256 5656 are priced £23.65 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena Box Office are priced £22.58 including booking fee. Young Voices provides an unrivalled musical opportunity for primary school children to perform all styles of music including folk, pop, rock and classical. Young Voices is designed to unify children from across the region, boost their confidence and provide lifelong memories for them and their families. Teachers & Pupils practice the dance routines and learn the songs in their music lessons for many months before they excitedly come together for the penultimate show at their local arena. This is an unmissable opportunity for local school choirs to sing in huge arenas alongside some of the most talented & well known artists from the world of music. Lucy Spraggan shot to fame on Xfactor 2012, she auditioned performing her own composition, ‘Last night’ but had to pull out of the competition due to illness, so she subsequently finished in ninth place, and second in her category. She was the first contestant in the show’s history to score a Top 40 single and album before the live shows even aired with her independently released album Top Room At The Zoo. Lucy has been in the studio recording her new album preceded by the single ‘We Are Unsinkable’ due for release early next year and will be performing tracks from the album whilst on tour with the Young Voices choir.
Young Voices is the world’s largest children’s choir and has a long standing history spanning 17 years. Their spectacular tours have featured an impressive array of top talent including Katherine Jenkins, Alexandra Burke, Beverley Knight, Dionne Bromfield, The High Kings, Joss Stone, Des’ree, Connie Talbot and many other established acts. This national event covers London, Manchester, Birmingham and Sheffield, giving the opportunity to over 110,000 children all over the UK to participate and enjoy the experience of singing. Primary Schools interested in signing up to Young Voices or want more information should go to www.youngvoices.co.uk

The best way to get your true weight is to get on the scales naked. Which is why I’m no longer allowed in my local Boots. I was in a job interview today when the manager handed me his laptop and said, “I want you to try and sell this to me.” So I put it under my arm, walked out of the building and went home. Eventually he called my mobile and said, “Bring it back here right now!” I said, “£100 and it’s yours.” I had just hung up my phone on the bus this morning when I got a tap on the shoulder, “Excuse me,” said the women behind me, “I wonder if you could settle an argument for us? Me and my friend just overheard your phone ringing just then and I’m pretty sure it was Beyoncé, but my friend is adamant it was Rihanna...” I said, “You’re both wrong, it was my mum.” This Christmas, Eastenders is all set for its most shocking storyline yet... Two rival families sort out their differences calmly, rationally, and without resorting to violence. How do you measure a Lego figure’s shoe size? In square feet. The Proclaimers’ lawn is out of control and they’re blaming B&Q. They’ve been to Bathgate, no mower, Linwood, no mower, Irvine, no mower... A man hasn’t been feeling well, so he goes to his doctor for a complete checkup. Afterward the doctor comes out with the results. “I’m afraid I have some very bad news,” the doctor says. “You’re dying, and you don’t have much time left.” “Oh, that’s terrible!” says the man. “How long have I got?” “Ten,” the doctor says sadly. “Ten?” the man asks. “Ten what? Months? Weeks? What?” “Nine...”

NEWS & INFORMATION
CARE ACT 2014 - UPDATE FROM COUNCIL Back in July we told you about the Care Act 2014. This sets out in law a number of reforms to care and support services, including simplifying all the other laws, and trying to make it clear exactly what care people can expect. It’s due to be implemented in April 2015. We asked Ruth Wakefield from Sheffield City Council to provide an update on the work that is going on in Sheffield. Here’s her update: What’s happening in Sheffield? Many of the duties in the Care Act have been best practice for a long time and so we are already doing them in Sheffield, such as providing personal budgets, direct payments and having a Safeguarding Adults Board. There are some duties which we do but need to get better at, like:providing good quality information at the right time providing support and needs assessments for carers providing advocacy for people who have substantial difficulty being involved and have no one else to help them thinking about what we can do to help someone’s needs from getting worse, right throughout the care and support system. Then there are duties that are new in law
and in practice, so we are looking at what the options are for doing it in Sheffield. For example, assessing people who pay for their own care, and offering a Deferred Payment so they don’t have to sell their home. This means that there may not be any significant changes by 1 April 2015, and in the short term we are focusing on making sure we are able to do the new duties. However, we know that we need to improve what we are already doing so we are developing longer term plans to do this. There is also a big programme called the Integrated Commissioning Programme which is looking at how we join up with health services and you can find out more on the Health and Wellbeing Board webpages. What do we expect to happen for April 2015? The council will need to do more assessments so we are looking at the different ways we can do this We are working out how many people in Sheffield need independent advocates to be involved in their needs assessment We will improve our carers assessment process We will involve more partners in the Safeguarding Adults Board and improve information so people know how to
17/12/14
raise concerns about abuse and neglect. Commissioning teams are constantly looking to improve the way they work to diversify services and improve their quality, and the Care Act will now influence all decisions We will put more focus on our approach to information, advice and prevention to help people remain independent in their community and make sure that we can continue to give support to the people with the most complex needs In the short term, we will improve existing information and help our staff and other health professionals to provide good quality, reliable information. Next steps The Care Act is a big piece of legislation which will shape the future of care and support services. Sheffield City Council is still working hard to work out how we are going to make the changes. We will be working more closely with Healthwatch Sheffield to make sure we are talking to you about what we’re doing, and coming up with ideas for how we can do it. If you have any questions, please talk to Healthwatch Sheffield or email the council: CareAct2014@sheffield.gov.uk
WINTER HEALTH CARE OPTIONS WHATʼS ON Sheffield residents are being reminded that there are a whole range of NHS services available across the city this winter, not just A&E. If you need medical attention when your GP practice is closed you can access the GP out-of-hours service by calling 111. This Freephone service can give you advice about which NHS services are open and able to help you with your problem. It is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Pharmacists can also offer advice on common problems such as coughs, colds, aches and pains as well as advising you on the safe use of prescription and over-thecounter medicines. They can also help you decide whether you need to see a doctor. Walk-in services treat minor illnesses and injuries that do not need a visit to A&E. The NHS Walk in Centre is happy to see people of all ages to walk-in as an unregistered patient and see a nurse or GP. This can be found on Broad Lane and is open from 8am to 10pm, seven days a week. The Minor Injuries Unit, at the Royal
Hallamshire hospital is open from 8am – 8pm seven days a week and provides treatment for adults with less serious injuries, such as sprains, cuts and grazes. Many people go to A&E with minor injuries, when they could usually be treated much more quickly at the Minor Injuries Unit. Dr Zak McMurray, Sheffield GP and Medical Director for NHS Sheffield CCG, said: “There are many health services available for less serious conditions and injuries and we urge people to use them. A lot of common and minor illnesses such as coughs, colds, sore throats and upset stomachs can also be treated in your home, by using over the counter medicine and getting plenty of rest. Some self-care essentials for your medicine cabinet include pain killers, antidiarrhoea medicine, rehydration mixtures, indigestion remedies and plasters. Please bear in mind that the A&E department is for serious and life threatening emergencies only, but of course if it is an emergency visit the Northern General Hospital for over 16s and Sheffield Children’s Hospital for 16s and under.”

BIG ‘STARRY’ BUSINESS FOR CANCER CHARITY SUPPORTERS THIS CHRISTMAS
Businesses from across the region were awarded large silver stars this week as a thank you for their generous support of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity this year. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity awarded 18 silver stars at Napoleons Casino on Tuesday to recognise those companies who have made a big difference to the work of the hospital this year. Those who received a large silver star included sponsors of the charity’s Christmas Star Appeal, Napoleons Casino, who pledged an extremely generous £10,000 this festive season, so that patients and their families can continue to benefit for from the hospitals vital services. Weston Park Hospital is one of only four specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and
exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. Representatives from each of the organisations gathered at the recently refurbished Napoleons Casino, Owlerton on Tuesday to accept their stars and receive a personal thank you from Charity Director, Samantha Kennedy. Brett Storey from I-Power Systems was honoured to accept a silver star in the absence of company CEO, Steve Lowe and Managing Director, Nigel Wallace. Brett said, “It is an absolute honour to have been awarded a silver star from Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.” “Earlier this year, in a bid to support the regions only cancer hospital, we pledged an initial £5,000 to the charity followed by an ongoing partnership with boxers, Adam Etches and Scott Jenkins, as part of their KO Cancer Campaign.” “It was humbling to see various companies come together at Christmas time and celebrate the work of the hospital, which
currently provides cancer treatment and care for over 60,000 people.” This festive season Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is asking the local community and corporate supporters to remember the vital work of the hospital and donate to The Christmas Star Appeal. Charity Director, Samantha Kennedy said, “This Christmas, as a thank you for the support we have received from companies right across the region, we were honoured to present large silver stars to some of our most proactive corporate supporters. “We’re hoping that the companies will display the stars in their premises as a small token of our appreciation this year.” “We rely on the support of both business and the local community to help continue funding the cancer research and improve the cancer treatment and care delivered at Weston Park Hospital. We really appreciate those who have helped us to shine brighter than
ever over the festive season.” The companies included Napoleons Casino, MB Advertising, Bickerton Skoda, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Irwin Mitchell, I-Power, PHP Printers, JB Doors, Greene King, Forde Recruitment, Mercury Newspaper, Hampton by Hilton, Sheffield Hallam University Facilities Directorate plus charity ambassadors Adam Etches and Scott Jenkins. A donation to Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity this year will give more local families the chance to make many more happy Christmas memories together. The cancer charity will be sending out a silver star Christmas tree decoration to anyone who donates to the appeal. Donations to the appeal can be made via post, online at www.Christmasstarappeal. org.uk or by texting WPCC14 followed by the amount you would like to donate (£1, £3, £5 or £10) to 70070.

CHRISTMAS COPLEY
I am happy to be making a guest appearance this week, firstly to wish all readers a merry Christmas and a happy New Year, and secondly to give a special welcome to Dronfield to international ventriloquist Mike Dennett who is appearing this Thursday 18th December, at 8.30 at JD'S Music Lounge, co-owned by his son, Russ, former member of top band the Human League. Mike left Dronfield thirty years ago and is currently busily employed for six months of the year in Benidorm and six months in his hometown of Blackpool, along with his dummy Chick. Also appearing on the night is the exceptional local female vocalist, Emma Rossi. The lounge address is 10A High Street, Dronfield, which is next door to the Manor Hotel and directly opposite Domino's Pizza. Tickets, which cost ten pounds include the first drink free, and can be obtained on the night. This promises to be a night of superb entertainment. I have a particular affection for the Dennett's who were my first well-wishes at my home after a particular nasty fall which smashed up my one and only
arm. On the night before, I am honoured to be invited to the Sheffield City Hall by my favourite singer, John Reilly to the annual Christmas party where he will be fronting the marvellous band Boy on a Dolphin. This is always a wonderful occasion and there will be some surprise guests. Ticket holders who retain their tickets are invited to the after show party which will be held at Maggie May's on Trippett lane which is only a stone's throw from the City Hall. I have long maintained the importance of supporting live music, and my experience recently of top acts appearing in Dronfield to disappointingly small audiences sends out the message of 'use it or lose it '
CONGRATULATIONS TO BUTCH! Wednesday night at Carcroft Club saw a very special evening - Alan Baker - or Butch as everybody knows him! - was the recipient of a Forty Year Long Service Award from the CIU. It's a testament to the work he has put in on behalf of the club that Carcroft goes from strength to strength. Everyone at the Mercury sends their regards and we look forward to working together for another forty years or so!

Robin Hood & Babes in the Wood Penistone Theatre Group are back by popular demand with their annual Pantomime. Over the years this community group has built up a massive following producing Pantomimes which rival anything put on at the big City Theatres. A great night for all the family. This year they perform their own version of Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood. When King Richard goes off to fight the evil Saracens he makes the misguided decision to leave his two children with his brother, the Sheriff of Nottingham, for safekeeping. The Sheriff enlists the help of his old nanny Nurse Phillipa Bedpan to look after them at the Castle. When the he realises he will inherit his brother’s fortune should the Babes die, he hatches an evil plan to get rid of them. He tricks two simpletons, Cod & Piece to do the deed. They take the Babes deep into heart of the forest where they leave them to die. The outlaw Robin Hood hears of this wrong-doing and with the help of Maid Marian and his band of Merry Men (Friar Tuck, Little John, and Will Scarlett) he thwarts the plan and takes the children into hiding. Needless to say, the Sheriff is not a happy man. Oh No He Isn’t! In an attempt to lure Robin out of hiding the Sheriff organises an archery contest, the prize for which is Maid Marian’s hand in marriage. Will the Sheriff of Nottingham do away with the Sherwood do-gooders, marry Maid Marian for himself and commit the townsfolk to a life of tyranny and extortion? It has all the usual ingredients and a few more. Don’t miss this great show. Many performances sell out so book early.

DELVE A LITTLE DEEPER THIS NEW YEARS EVE After another successful year promoters Delve Deeper return to finish off 2014 in style with a huge NYE party upstairs at Bloo88 celebrating all things house. The last time Delve Deeper visited the West Street venue was on this Summer’s Tramlines Saturday when for the second year they hosted one of the parties of the entire weekend with Defected’s Audiowhores headlining the jam packed rear terrace before the party moved upstairs, where it remained full late into the early hours. A whole host of homegrown talent take to the controls for the end of year bash in a couple of weeks as Sheffield based Producer Evans is joined by legendary Bed resident Dino, Collect’s Set2, Dimitri Soul, Reel House FM’s Louis Clarke and Delve Deeper residents Liam C and Jenny Fu. There’s also an extra bonus to compliment the excellent array of house music on offer on the night in the fact that all of this is absolutely free! Which on a night where the club going public are usually overcharged for underwhelming line-ups is something to behold. Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker
I once swore I’d never be seen dead in that fashion nightmare, the onesie, but this week, I very nearly was... A trip to the river Derwent, and the banks were wet and slippy, and as I’m still the mountain goat I once was, I was aware that care needed to be taken, but didn’t really think anything could go wrong.... this is where the problems began. I’ve bought a fleece onsie; (I know, I’m suitably embarrassed!) I’m currently suffering with arthritis, so the extra layer does wonders to keep me warm in winter. I wore this below trousers and salopettes, then covered all with a jumper and a heavy jacket, and finished off with a brand new pair of fleece lined boots. As I’ve mentioned, the banks were wet, and where new pegs had been cut, particularly muddy, so I had a fair weight of mud clogging the treads of the new boots... I was wandering with a lure rod, and espied a spot which looked likely to hold fish; unfortunately, it was at the bottom of a steep incline, and there were already indentations which indicated others had slipped on the way down. No matter, my mind is still 18 years old, therefore it follows that my 44 year old body will immediately leap where the brain sends it with the same reflexes and agility of years gone by. Not true. I’m still not sure what happened, but my feet went from under me and as I spun through the air, I was immediately aware that the river was painfully close! I landed heavily on my back and shoulders, knocking the wind out of me, and briefly though I’d got away with it. At this point, I noticed the bankside vegetation slowly moving by, and realised I was sliding head first, on my back, towards the cold, dark depths of the wintry Derwent! My rucksack straps had firmly pinned my arm, my boots, heavy with mud offered no purchase, so I arched my back and tried to dig any part of my body, but still kept slipping inexorably closer! Those few seconds were painfully slow. I knew the margins slipped into eighteen feet of water, and if I ended up going in then, my chances of getting out again were negligent. I am a qualified swiftwater rescue instructor, and have been unfortunate enough to recover several anglers bodies from various lakes, ponds and rivers, so I know exactly what happens when someone drowns. Immersion in cold water is quickly followed by cold shock where blood is drawn from the extremities, brain included, and the body starts to shut down. This happens within seconds. By now, the person in the water is incapable of shouting for help, and the larynx spasms to prevent water getting into the lungs; it Superbly located for Holidays & Short Stays Quality furnished log cabins, sleep up to 6. also stops that person breathing. Heavy clothing becomes waterlogged, pulling the drowning person down as he fights to stay afloat, thrashing about, expending precious energy trying to keep mouth and nose above water. The larynx opens, an influx of water follows and the throat spasms again to prevent breathing... within a minute, trapped underwater, involuntary inhalation occurs to ingest yet more water, and the person drowns...a cold, dark death that no-one has seen or heard... Luckily, as the back of my head dipped in to the icy chill and I closed my eyes, I stopped sliding. I don’t know why, what I rested against, but I lay stunned and tried to work out what to do next; if I moved, I feared slipping further into the murk, but eventually, I freed an arm and managed to gain some purchase. I rolled over, turned parallel to the bank and lay face down in the mud until I’d regained some strength and then gingerly got to my knees. I threw my kit back up the bank, crawled up after it and sat breathless at the top of the greasy slope. I fear very little (I’m married to a redhead after all!) but I had been terrified for the first time in my angling life. I’d been very lucky, unlike dozens of other anglers, and I’d got away with it...not through quick thinking or super speedy Spiderman reactions, just luck. It’s certainly made me reconsider whether I should be leaping around wet banks without a ‘buddy’ or rope and spike, and if you read this, please do the same. Think about how safe you really are, and please don’t think “It will never happen to me” because that’s how I got into trouble....

MILLERS HAVE UPPER HAND BUT HAVE TO SETTLE FOR THE DRAW Rotherham United had to settle for their second goalless draw in as many weeks despite arguably having the upper hand against Nottingham Forest. Emmanuel Ledesma came closest to breaking the deadlock when he smashed an effort against the visitors’ crossbar while Dexter Blackstock had a goal ruled out at the other end as both sides shared the spoils. Following their hard-fought draw at Cardiff last time out, the Millers kept faith with their startingline up for the visit of Stuart Pearce’s Forest side with the only change being on the bench with Joe Skarz replacing Frazer Richardson. In the early stages, the Millers were almost the lucky beneficiaries of a mix-up in the Forest rearguard when Tom Lawrence’s ball upfield saw Alex Revell in hot pursuit but under little pressure, Kelvin Wilson fizzed a backpass towards the visitors’ goal and ‘keeper Karl Darlow took a swipe at an attempted clearance but fortunately for the Newcastle-bound stopper, he made enough of a connection to prevent the ball finding the net and he managed to bundle the ball clear with Revell looking to force the ball home from point-blank range. Moments later, Ledesma showed fleet of foot to leave Michail Antonio in his wake before firing a cross which beat the advancing home runners before Wilson had to be on-hand with a superb sliding challenge to halt Lawrence’s marauding run moments later. Just before the quarter hour, fine interplay involving Ledesma and Paul Green paved the way for Lawrence to try his luck from distance but his ambitious effort failed to trouble Darlow before Green blazed a shot well over the bar after Scott
SEARCH FOR HOME VICTORY GOES ON... After making a number of changes in midweek, Paul Dickov reverted back to the side that won at Oldham in last weeks FA Cup second round. It was a scrappy first half of football for both sides, Rovers had the edge in terms of possession but tight defending at the back denied them on numerous occasions. There was an early chance for the home side as a corner straight from the training ground fell to Paul Keegan whose shot from distance, despite being struck hard, was well saved by Stuart Nelson. Minutes later Curtis Main found himself through on goal. Instead of going for the first time shot he rounded the keeper but the Gills got defenders back to deny the opening goal. The visitors first chance came as Brennan Dickensen dispossessed Kyle Bennett in midfield and charged towards goal. Getting his shot away, Sam Johnstone was relieved to see the ball go just wide of his post. On the 15 minute mark the home side should have gone ahead through James Coppinger. A dangerous ball across the face of goal by Main was met by the Rovers captain but Nelson smartly saved from 10 yards. It was Rovers who threatened again, this time through a lively Kyle Bennett. Main headed the
Wootton’s lay-off following Reece James’ deep centre. In a rare foray by Forest, Antonio showed Wootton a quick pair of heels before floating a delicate cross which had Adam Collin backtracking nervously but the advancing Blackstock could not divert the ball goalwards at the far post. Minutes later, Antonio again got the better of Wootton to fizz a cross which narrowly evaded the attentions of Britt Assombalonga before Ben Pringle’s daisycutter from just outside the box stung the palms of Darlow at the other end. With half-time approaching, the Millers twice came within a whisker of the breakthrough when firstly Forest appealed vainly for a free-kick and following clever one-touch passing, Ledesma weighed up his options before firing a dipping effort from distance which seemingly moved in the air and with Darlow a helpless bystander, the ball smashed against the crossbar. Moments later, the Millers attacked with menace as incisive passing released James’ down the left flank and the Manchester United loanee showed great awareness to pull the ball back into the path of Lawrence, who calmly stroked the ball towards goal but the ball agonisingly whistled the wrong side of the upright. Danny Fox became the first to incur the wrath of the referee after being cautioned following the conclusion of the home attack before skipper Craig Morgan led from the front as he bravely put his body on the line as he threw himself at Antonio’s goalbound shot in first-half stoppage time. Following the interval, Forest were the quickest of the blocks with Antonio skipping down the byline before firing a centre which was met perfectly by the head of Henri Lansbury, who could not keep his header down as it flew over the bar. At the other end, James curled an instinctive cross which was flicked on by Morgan into the path of Revell, who cushioned a volley which Darlow diverted into the path of Green, who looked to have the simple task of tapping home into the unguarded net but the assistant referee had already flagged for offside. Moments later, another James’ centre caused havoc in the Forest rearguard and Ledesma fired a fierce half-volley which was bravely blocked by
Lansbury on the edge of the box before Pringle became the first home player to see yellow after he attempted to cynically halt a Forest counter-attack. Just before the hour mark, the Millers had a let-off when Jamie Paterson fired a tantalising corner which saw Blackstock rise above his marker before planting a header which hit the underside of the bar before finding the net but to the home fans’ relief, the referee adjudged he had climbed illegally and the goal was chalked off. With the game in the balance, Rotherham countered superbly and superb interplay involving Ledesma and Lawrence bisected the Forest defence and the Leicester loanee pulled an inviting centre into the path of Pringle, who had the goal at his mercy, but he fluffed his lines as he hoicked an effort over the bar. Moments later, Lawrence was the beneficiary of some neat home passing to curl a delightful effort which had Darlow anxiously looking over his shoulder as it fizzed narrowly over the crossbar before Ledesma fired an exocet effort from the tightest of angles which almost got the home fans’ off their seats as it whizzed narrowly wide. The Millers came within inches of the decisive breakthrough when Lawrence released Revell down the right flank and although his cross missed the advancing Richie Smallwood, James pounced on the loose ball to drill a fierce left-footed effort which initially looked to wrongfoot Darlow, who despite diving the wrong way stuck out a leg to clear the danger. With time running out, Eric Lichaj tried his luck with a speculative half-volley which flew harmlessly over the bar before Paterson’s superb mazy run and cross almost saw Assombalonga poke the ball home but he bizarrely failed to make contact with the goal gaping. Lawrence became the next to see yellow for tripping Robert Tesche in full flight before sub Jordan Bowery almost made an immediate impact when his drilled cross was almost met by the head of Revell at the far post but he narrowly failed to make contact. In the dying seconds, Fox blazed a free-kick harmlessly over the bar before sub Paul Taylor squandered an opportunity to test Darlow late on with a tame effort which dribbled to the visitors’ keeper.
ball into the path of the winger who skipped past a number of defenders before getting his shot away but it was another good save from Nelson, who was being kept busy. On the half hour mark another short corner caught the visitors out, this time it was Richie Wellens who was given space to drive into the box. After a real scrap in the six yard box somehow Gillingham escaped and got the ball clear. With Gillingham defending deep Rovers struggled to get the breakthrough, and Nelson was called into action again on the stroke of half time as a deflected Bennett shot almost found its way through. Despite Rovers being on top, the teams went in level at the break. The visitors came out a different side in the second half and within 15 seconds John Egan fired a vicious shot from 35 yards, missing the crossbar by only inches. The Gills were rewarded for their lively start to the second half when a scuffed shot from Michael Doughty somehow found its’ way to Luke Norris at the back post. Determined to beat his man, Norris tapped home from close range. Paul Dickov looked for options and immediately withdrew Paul Keegan for Harry Forrester to try and find a way back into the game. Coppinger came agonisingly close after being put through by Wellens, but up against two defenders he poked his effort just inches wide. Frustration was growing for the home side and as they threw players forward The Gills played on the counter attack. Against the run of play Norris
added his second of the game as he tried his luck from distance and brilliantly found the bottom corner. There was a late surge from Rovers as Wabara headed against the bar from a Bennett corner, before Theo Robinson was brought down in the box forcing the referee to give a penalty. Main confidently stepped up and converted the spot kick but it was too little too late as the referee blew for full time just seconds later.

BLADES NEWS2014/15 FIRST MEETING ENDS IN SHARED POINTS United’s first ever senior meeting with Fleetwood Town ended with the spoils shared. At Highbury Stadium, 1,285 Blades fans saw Bob Harris give the visitors the lead on eight minutes but Antoni Sarcevic levelled eight minutes into the second half. The second half was full of chances with the Blades shading proceedings but a winning goal remained elusive. Clough made three changes with Wallace making his first start following his switch from Ilkeston last month - loanees McCarthy and O’Grady also took starting shirts. CampbellRyce and Basham dropped to the bench, whilst Scougall missed out through injury. As the Unitedites sang in the cold, the make
up of the team in the early moments became evident. Flynn was again at right-back, Baxter and Wallace were part of a three-man midfield with Murphy in front of them - O’Grady and Higdon were the front two. The Blades, wearing yellow, began well and a short free-kick brought the game’s first chance on five minutes. Baxter and Wallace were involved before Murphy found space on the left but his shot was pushed away by goalkeeper Maxwell, just out of the reach of O’Grady. It was just a couple of moments, however, before United took the lead, the goal coming from an unusual source - the right foot of left-back HARRIS, who one-twoed with Baxter before drilling into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

After the goal, the Blades settled into a shape of keeping the home side away from Howard’s goal. Fleetwood’s first opportunity came on 16 minutes, a long range effort from Matty Hughes after a couple of turns, whilst their only other effort of note in the first half was Proctor’s shot from the edge of the box, which fizzed wide. For United, Wallace saw a lot of the ball on his debut, whilst Murphy’s positioning saw him cause Fleetwood problems and he went close on 34 minutes, shooting from distance, which forced Maxwell into a save. The momentum remained with the Blades early in the second half with O’Grady shooting wide and Baxter drilling a free-kick into the wall. However, the tables soon turned. Howard parried an Evans shot and McCarthy did well to prevent Matty Hughes latching on to the rebound but Fleetwood were level on 53 minutes. Morris delivered a deep cross from the left and SARCEVIC’s header was well placed over a number of Blades defenders into the top corner. Central defenders McEveley and McCarthy were booked in quick succession as United regained composure.
The action returned to the other end and from a Wallace pass, O’Grady’s shot was saved by Maxwell’s body and then Higdon headed wide a Harris cross. The entertainment value continued as a run and shot from Proctor rolled just wide and Sarcevic was theatrical as he fell between McEveley and Murphy, looking for a penalty. Howard also saved a long-range effort from Andrew. Basham replaced Baxter and before McNulty took over from Higdon five minutes later, the Blades had gone close three times. Wallace and O’Grady brought saves out of Maxwell and Flynn fired just wide. The chances continued. Murphy beat three on a run from the halfway line and found Flynn, but his shot as saved by Maxwell and Sarcevic took advantage of McCarthy’s slip but Howard saved and the defence tidied up. The tiring Wallace was given an ovation by the Blades fans when he was replaced by Cuvelier. Morris curled over a free-kick for the home side in the final ten minutes and a dipping shot from Haughton was close soon after. With three minutes to go Cuvelier volleyed over after Fleetwood could only half-clear a free-kick and the tension inside the ground was evident as the three minutes of injurytime was played out, including a very late Blades corner.
GAFFER CONTENT
Nigel Clough was happy enough with a point from Saturday’s clash with Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium. Bob Harris opened the scoring for the Blades, who started the game with Michael Higdon and Chris O’Grady up front with Jamie Murphy playing in a free role behind the strikers, only for the Cod Army to net a point early in the second-half through a Antoni Sarcevic header. But the Blades boss, who also handed a debut to midfielder Kieran Wallace, was encouraged by what he saw from his side. Reflecting on the 1-1 draw, Clough remarked: “It is a good point away from home, although it is always disappointing not
to win the game when you have taken the lead. “It was an even game though, even in the last 10-15 minutes both teams were positive and tried to win the game, with chances coming at both ends. “We were pleased with the first-half performance, perhaps our formation surprised Fleetwood. It is the first chance we have had to get the two big lads together up front, with Jamie Murphy in behind and offensively it worked well. “It is just a shame we had so many midfielders unavailable on the day, and with every formation there are pros and cons and the way we setup left us exposed down the flanks as we saw for their equaliser.”

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY
OWLS NEWS2014/15 EVERYTHING BUT THE GOAL Wednesday went down 1-0 to Wolves as the only thing missing from a commanding performance was a goal. And it was a former Owl who did the damage, Leon Clarke scoring with his first touch having come off the bench with six minutes to go. For Wednesday it was a tale of what might have been as Stevie May went close more than once and also had a penalty claim turned down. Overall, the hosts were in the driving seat and could feel hard done by with their first loss in five games. The Owls were looking to end a 50-year hoodoo with Wolves having failed to beat the Midlanders in no less than the last 15 meetings at Hillsborough. And they were almost off to a flier when May pounced on a weak backpass and rounded Carl Ikeme but his attempt to slot home was thwarted by Danny Batth. Ex-Owl Batth was making his first return to S6 since Wednesday’s promotion of 2012 and found himself on the back foot again midway through the first half as Royston Drenthe unleashed a thunderous volley that whistled over the crossbar.
Drenthe then swung a dangerous corner into the mix that Glenn Loovens glanced past the post before the former Real Madrid man sent May scampering through again but Ikeme was out to divert the danger. For all their dominance, the Owls could not capitalise and nearly paid two minutes from the break when Graham hit wide with the goal at his mercy. Moments later, May had another chance at the other end but he too drilled wide and it seemed only a matter of time before the deadlock was broken. And that should have happened a minute into the second half when Rajiv Van La Parra missed a simple chance after Keiren Westwood saved well from Kevin McDonald. Westwood raced off his line to deny La Parra and the same player did have
the ball in the net on the hour only for the strike to be ruled out by an offside flag. The Owls introduced Caolan Lavery from the bench but it was May at the centre of action on 71 minutes, tangling in the area with Dominic Iorfa, but the referee waved away the penalty appeals. An open contest drew to a close with both sides seeking a winner, which the home side almost achieved twice inside the last ten minutes – before Wolves went one better. First, a clever three-man move ended with Kieran Lee flicking narrowly wide, then Drenthe was inches from the target with a bullet drive from distance. But the Molineux men had the final word six minutes from time when Clarke converted from close range after finding room at the back post from McDonald’s cross.
GRAY RUES SETBACK
Stuart Gray bemoaned his side’s profligacy in front of goal following the 1-0 home defeat to Wolves. Former Owl Leon Clarke bit the hand that once fed, coming off the bench late in the game to ensure a three-point return for the visitors. And Gray was left scratching his head having seen Wednesday
dominate the majority of the contest and create a host of opportunities. He said: “I’m sat here now thinking, how on earth have we lost that game? Stuart Gray during the Owls clash with Watford “We could have been 3-0 up ten minutes and out of sight by half time. “But football is all about taking your chances and
we didn’t do that today. “The frustrating thing is that that was one of best home displays of the season. “But it means nothing if you don’t get the result, which we haven’t done. “I would much rather be talking about an ugly win rather than having played well and lost.”
WE’LL PICK OURSELVES UP - TOM LEES
Tom Lees cut a frustrated figure after the loss to Wolves on Saturday but the defender insists Wednesday must look forward with fixtures aplenty over the coming weeks. Lees says the squad as a whole will take responsibility for defeat at Hillsborough but the main thing now is to target a return to winning ways at Fulham next week. He said: “Fulham will be a massive game. We talked about getting a good haul from these games. “We need to be cemented in that top half when the New Year comes around. “We have to pick ourselves up and get ready for it. Fulham got a good result at Leeds so they will be confident.”
Lees says goals must come from all areas – not just from the strikers – and everyone must take responsibility on that front. “You can’t pin it all on the strikers. We have not scored enough from

set pieces. We have to contribute more from that area. We have to keep providing the strikers with chances. “The only way we are going to get better at it is if we address it and do something about it.”
