2014 was the Arena’s twenty-third year in showbiz and yet again another memorable season featuring the world’s biggest artiste’s, shows and sporting battles. Highlights from 2014 saw international superstar Justin Timberlake who played his first ever solo concert right here at the Arena back in 2003 return for an epic sell-out show complete with a moving hydraulic stage, plus sell-out gigs from McBusted, Katy Perry, Little Mix, Lee Evans, Paolo Nutini, Lady Gaga and Kasabian. 2014 was also a year for a few firsts; Gary Barlow made his solo debut at the Arena, Miranda Hart was the first ever female comedian to play the Arena and Jack Whitehall was the first to perform comedy ‘in the round’. We also welcomed Ant and Dec with their brand new Take Away On Tour show which saw audience members win fabulous prizes including a holiday and car. 2014 also saw the Arena’s first ever Comic & Film Convention with thousands of visitors flocking to see their heroes including stars from Star Wars, Doctor Who, Terminator 3, Torchwood, Game of Thrones, Red Dwarf, Battlestar Galactica, Harry Potter, Wizards Vs Aliens, The A-Team and many many more. The event proved to be so popular that it will be back in August 2015. Another first for the Arena in 2014, in fact a first for the region was when The Spanish Riding School of Vienna brought their famous Lipizzaner Stallions for their first appearance in the North of England in their 430 year history. Lee Evans may have announced his retirement but he also played to our biggest capacity for a comedy performance with 12,061 tickets sold on the Saturday night of his 3 night run in Sheffield – with previous record was held by Michael McIntyre with an audience of 11,397. The Arena also helped Hallam FM celebrate their 40th birthday with a celebratory concert Summer Live featuring many of today’s top pop acts! The TV smash Strictly Come Dancing brought its Live Tour back to the Arena as did Disney On Ice, which is the only touring show to have played the venue every year since the building opened in May 1991, that’s over 270 performances seen by over

1.3 million customers. Comedy played another major role in the event calendar with 10 sell-out shows in 2014 from Russell Howard, Jack Whitehall, Miranda Hart, Lee Evans & John Bishop. The Steelers turn the Arena into the House Of Steel every week throughout the ice hockey season and are still one of the most successful ice hockey teams in the country both on and off the ice. 2014 also saw Best Solicitors come on board as the new sponsors of the venue’s exclusive Arena Club and Heart Yorkshire as the sponsors for the Arena’ brand new VIP Lounge offering an exclusive membership scheme to customers. Launched in November 2014 the Arena’s reduced capacity Steel Hall had its first event, which was a roaring sell out success with Jeff Wayne’s Musical version of The War of The Worlds. 2014 also saw the Arena introduce gift vouchers to customers looking for that perfect year-round present, which have gone down a treat! So, into 2015 and the venue’s first event, as it has been for the past 20 years, is the Indoor Bike Trials with Sheffield hosting the only UK leg of this World series. Closely followed in February by ArenaCross, where the Arena is transformed into an indoor motorbike dirt track with over 4000 tons of dirt laid on the Arena floor. Next year will be another bumper year and events already on sale include Queen + Adam Lambert, The Vamps, Slipknot, WWE, McBusted, Strictly Come Dancing, The X Factor, The Script, Spandau Ballet, Usher, Top Gear Live & Nickelback. There are already sell out multiple dates from the biggest touring artistes Take That, One Direction & Olly Murs. With family shows from the World’s most famous basketball team the Harlem Globetrotters, ice hockey from The Steelers, wrestling from WWE, and pre-school fun with CBeebies Live! 2015 is also shaping up to be yet another strong year from comedy as already on sale is 2 dates for Michael McIntyre and 6 performances of a brand new Mrs Brown tour. With many more shows to be announced over the coming months visit www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk for all the latest announcements.

The missus just found out I replaced our bed with a trampoline. She hit the roof. I was entering a singles bar last night when a bouncer started patting me down. He said, “Have you got anything on you that you shouldn’t have?” “Yes,” I replied, “My wedding ring.” Can’t tell right from wrong anymore. Stupid names for twins anyway. I wrote a book on penguins. With hindsight, I realise that paper would have been easier. A man is in bed with his wife when there is a rata-tat-tat on the door. He rolls over and looks at his clock, and it’s half past three in the morning. “I’m not getting out of bed at this time”, he thinks, and rolls over. Then, a louder knock follows. “Aren’t you going to answer that?” says his wife. So he drags himself out of bed, and goes downstairs. He opens the door and there is man standing at the door. It didn’t take the homeowner long to realize the man was drunk. “Hi there.” slurs the stranger, “Can you give me a push??” “No, get lost, it’s half past three. I was in bed.” says the man and slams the door. He goes back up to bed and tells his wife what happened and she says: “Dave, that wasn’t very nice of you. Remember that night we broke down in the pouring rain on the way to pick the kids up from the baby-sitter and you had to knock on that man’s house to get us started again? What would have happened if he’d told us to get lost??” “But the guy was drunk.” says the husband. “It doesn’t matter.” says the wife. “He needs our help and it would be the Christian thing to help him.” So the husband out of bed again, gets dressed, and goes downstairs. He opens the door, and not being able to see the stranger anywhere he shouts: “Hey, do you still want a push??” and he hears a voice cry out “Yeah please.” So, still being unable to see the stranger he shouts: “Where are you?” And the stranger replies: “I’m over here, on your garden swing.”

NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is supporting a national NHS campaign to encourage older people to seek advice early from their local pharmacist if they are ‘feeling under the weather’. Every year the NHS sees a huge increase in numbers of emergency admissions to hospital over the colder months. Older and frail people are urged to decrease their chance of serious health problems by seeking early advice from their local pharmacist. Dr Zak McMurray, Clinical Director for NHS Sheffield CCG, said: “Every winter, doctors and nurses across the nation see a big increase in the number of older and frail people who are admitted to hospital because of respiratory or other

chronic conditions usually worsened by immobility, the cold and other viral illnesses. “Many older people often don’t seek advice for coughs and colds because they don’t think it’s serious enough. Also, a lot of the time they believe that they’re wasting their pharmacist’s time. We want to get the message across that local pharmacists are highly-trained and will be pleased to give expert advice. “I would urge older and frail people and carers to seek advice while symptoms are still in the early stages. “Pharmacies have long opening hours, you don’t need an appointment and many have private consultation areas, so they are an excellent first port of call that will help prevent serious health conditions this winter.”

SHEFFIELD’S SPORTING THANK YOU FOR STARRY SUPPORT HERITAGE ON SHOW

Sheffield United FC and Owlerton Greyhound Stadium have joined forces to celebrate more than 200 years of sporting heritage in the city. 2014 has seen both organisations reach incredible milestones – 125 years for The Blades and 85 years for Owlerton Stadium. And to mark this remarkable achievement John Gilburn, managing director at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium and Mal Brannigan, managing director of Sheffield United, presented each other with a special memento at the weekend’s Sheffield United v Walsall game. Mal Brannigan said: “We were delighted to welcome John to Bramall Lane and to acknowledge this fantastic combined achievement by Owlerton and The Blades. Both organisations have proud

histories in the city and these milestones should be celebrated accordingly.” Owlerton Stadium opened its doors to the public for the very first time on Easter Sunday in 1929 and hosted its first National Greyhound Racing Club meeting in 1932. Now, 85 years on, the venue has developed into Yorkshire’s premier greyhound racing track and hosts more than 250 race meetings, attracting an estimated 200,000 visitors every year, making it the second busiest Greyhound Board of Great Britain track in the country. The Stadium recently won the Outstanding Achievements in Sports, Hospitality and Tourism award at the Sheffield Business Awards. John Gilburn, managing director at Owlerton Greyhound

Stadium, said: “It’s amazing to think how far Owlerton Stadium has come over the past 85 years – we’ve gone from hosting our very first race meeting back in 1932 to now attracting more than 200,000 visitors per year. “On behalf of Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, it’s been an honour to join together with Sheffield United to recognise the success of both organisations and the role we have played in entertaining the people of Sheffield over the years.” Sheffield United was formed in 1889 as an off shoot of Sheffield United Cricket Club. Bramall Lane is the oldest recorded football league stadium and the club has a proud and successful history with league titles to their name and winners of the FA cup on four separate occasions.

The dedicated charity for the regions only cancer hospital has raised a record amount for its Christmas Star Appeal thanks to the generosity of its supporters. In a bid to keep more families together for many Christmases to come, Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity asked for donations over the festive season to ensure that the vital services provided by the hospital can continue to be improved. With over 700 donations the cancer charity were overwhelmed by the support of the community and corporate organisations who gave to the appeal in return for their very own Silver Star decorations. The appeal, which has been generously sponsored by Napoleons Casino, asked people to remember the vital work of Weston Park Hospital this Christmas and has so far raised over an outstanding £30,000 Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. Along with donations to the Christmas Star Appeal, supporters of the charity submitted ‘Star Selfie’ pictures

to the cancer charity as a further show of support for the hospital. Patrons, patients, staff, fundraisers and even pets, joined in the ‘Star Selfie’ initiative to help keep Weston Park Hospital at the forefront of research, treatment and care. The money raised from the appeal will enable the continued funding of vital projects in the hospital plus the funding of new research trials, treatment options and after care facilities such as the Cancer Support Centre. Charity Patron and former Taekwondo Olympian, Sarah Stevenson submitted her very own ‘Star Selfie’ after losing both her mum and dad to cancer in 2011. Sarah said, “I wanted to support Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity this Christmas to say thank you for looking after my dad in his final months. The staff at Weston Park Hospital were truly incredible and anything I can do to help raise money for this vital facility is an absolute honour.” “I’ll be hanging my silver tree decoration with pride over the festive season in memory of my parents but also in hope of a brighter future for those fighting cancer right now in our region.” Charity Ambassador and undefeated boxer, Adam Etches showed his support for the appeal along with 22 year old Worksop patient, Liam Buckley. Liam, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer which has spread to his liver and lungs, is currently receiving treatment on the hospitals dedicated teenage unit. Liam said, “It was a no brainer for me to support Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity this

Christmas. I’ve been receiving treatment at the hospital for the last few months and without a doubt they have helped brighten up my days there. “The cancer charity provides funding for the teenage unit at the hospital and it made such a difference to be treated in such a modern and friendly environment surrounded by patients of a similar age to me.” “I would urge anyone who is able to, to make a donation to the charity’s Christmas Star Appeal and submit a Star Selfie at the same time- it’s not only festive and fun but it helps raise awareness of this incredible facility.” Fundraising Manager, Helen gentle said, “We have been overwhelmed with the support we’ve received for our Christmas Star Appeal this year.” “We know that Christmas can be a financial strain for families across the region which is why we’re incredibly grateful to the hundreds of people who have chosen to remember our vital work. Every donation we receive makes a huge difference to those receiving treatment at Weston Park Hospital.” “Whether it’s in memory of a loved one or in the hope of a brighter future let’s continue to shine bright this Christmas for cancer patients who may be facing the reality of spending time in hospital over the next few weeks.” Donations to the appeal can be made via post, online at www. Christmasstarappeal.org.uk or by texting WPCC14 followed by the amount you would like to donate (£1, £3, £5 or £10) to 70070.

Robin Hood & Babes in the Wood Penistone Theatre Group are back by popular demand with their annual Pantomime. Over the years this community group has built up a massive following producing Pantomimes which rival anything put on at the big City Theatres. A great night for all the family. This year they perform their own version of Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood. When King Richard goes off to fight the evil Saracens he makes the misguided decision to leave his two children with his brother, the Sheriff of Nottingham, for safekeeping. The Sheriff enlists the help of his old nanny Nurse Phillipa Bedpan to look after them at the Castle. When the he realises he will inherit his brother’s fortune should the Babes die, he hatches an evil plan to get rid of them. He tricks two simpletons, Cod & Piece to do the deed. They take the Babes deep into heart of the forest where they leave them to die. The outlaw Robin Hood hears of this wrong-doing and with the help of Maid Marian and his band of Merry Men (Friar Tuck, Little John, and Will Scarlett) he thwarts the plan and takes the children into hiding. Needless to say, the Sheriff is not a happy man. Oh No He Isn’t! In an attempt to lure Robin out of hiding the Sheriff organises an archery contest, the prize for which is Maid Marian’s hand in marriage. Will the Sheriff of Nottingham do away with the Sherwood do-gooders, marry Maid Marian for himself and commit the townsfolk to a life of tyranny and extortion? It has all the usual ingredients and a few more. Don’t miss this great show. Many performances sell out so book early.

FAREWELL TO A SHEFFIELD LEGEND

It is with great sadness that this week we say farewell to one of Sheffield’s greatest ever musical exports Joe Cocker, who has sadly lost his battle with lung cancer aged 70. Born in Crookes, the former Gas Fitter started his career on the Sheffield pubs and clubs in the 1960s before hitting the big time. In 1961, under the stage name Vance Arnold, Cocker plied his career with the group, Vance Arnold and the Avengers. The name was a combination of Vince Everett, Elvis Presley’s character in Jailhouse Rock, (which Cocker misheard as Vance) and country singer Eddy Arnold. The group mostly played in the pubs of Sheffield, performing covers of Chuck Berry and Ray Charles songs. In 1963, they booked their first significant gig when they supported the Rolling Stones at Sheffield City Hall. The next year, Cocker signed a recording contract as a solo act with Decca and released his first single, a cover of the Beatles’ “I’ll Cry Instead” (with Big Jim Sullivan and Jimmy Page playing guitars). Despite extensive promotion from Decca lauding his youth and working class roots, the record was a flop and his recording contract with Decca lapsed at the end of 1964. After Cocker recorded the single, he dropped his stage name and formed a new group, Joe Cocker’s Big Blues. There is only one known recording of Joe Cocker’s Big Blues on an EP

given out by The Sheffield College during Rag Week and called Rag Goes Mad at the Mojo. He was propelled to pop stardom when his version of With A Little Help From My Friends reached number one in 1968 and performed the song at the famous Woodstock Festival in New York state a year later. He was also well-known for his Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour of 1970, which visited 48 cities across the US. His duet with Jennifer Warnes, Up Where We Belong - from An Officer And A Gentleman - hit number one and went on to win both a Grammy and an Academy Award in 1983. Joe is one of only a few of Sheffield’s homegrown stars to have a bronze Sheffield Legends star outside the Town Hall and he was also awarded an OBE in 2008 at Buckingham Palace for his services to music. Joe continued to perform until 2011 but had been suffering from lung cancer for quite a while and sadly passed away on the 22nd of December in Crawford, Colorado. From the pubs of Sheffield to Woodstock Festival and beyond, a true Sheffield musical great who will be sadly missed. RIP Joe Cocker - 20/5/44 - 22/12/14

The multi-platinum, Grammy-Award-winning, masked beast that is Slipknot is set to make a long awaited return to UK arenas in January 2015 with their ‘Prepare For Hell’ tour stopping off in Sheffield at the Motorpoint Arena on Friday 16th January 2015. Production have released some additional previously sold out standing tickets, plus a limited number of £22 seats. Tickets purchased online at www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk or through the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56 are priced £43.45 & £22 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person from the Arena box office are priced £41.48 & £21 including booking fee. Slipknot’s front-man Corey Taylor muses; “The UK has always been very special for us. In a lot of ways, it’s where this insanity began. So, for this tour, we decided to try and hit as many places as we could - not only England, but Scotland and Wales as well. Technically Ireland is Europe, but we’re going there too. We’re coming back for the people who started this for us: that would be YOU. Prepare yourselves...Hell is coming.” The incendiary band’s first new music in over six years, the fiercely anticipated, ‘5; The Gray Chapter’

DELVE A LITTLE DEEPER THIS NEW YEARS EVE After another successful year promoters Delve Deeper return to finish off 2014 in style with a huge NYE party upstairs at Bloo88 celebrating all things house. The last time Delve Deeper visited the West Street venue was on this Summer’s Tramlines Saturday when for the second year they hosted one of the parties of the entire weekend with Defected’s Audiowhores headlining the jam packed rear terrace before the party moved upstairs, where it remained full late into the early hours. A whole host of homegrown talent take to the controls for the end of year bash in a couple of weeks as Sheffield based Producer Evans is joined by legendary Bed resident Dino, Collect’s Set2, Dimitri Soul, Reel

CHRISTMAS EVE

was released on 20th October. The band’s lead single from the opus, ‘The Devil In I’ has been added to the Radio 1 Playlist and SLIPKNOT’s gradual creep on world domination has begun once more. SLIPKNOT’s visually arresting, chaotic, spectacular shows often become the stuff of legend, so with all new masks and production, these events are essential! Slipknot will be supported in Sheffield by Korn & King 810.

House FM’s Louis Clarke and Delve Deeper residents Liam C and Jenny Fu. There’s also an extra bonus to compliment the excellent array of house music on offer on the night in the fact that all of this is absolutely free! Which on a night where the club going public are usually overcharged for underwhelming line-ups is something to behold. Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

So, another year is almost at an end, so after many words written, I thought I’d consider which have been my favourite angling products of 2014... see if yours compare! First in the list has to be my impressive Sonik SK3 Twin Tip rods. Now, I am in no way associated with Sonik Sports, so this is a genuine appreciation of a fine rod which I’ve been using for over a year. Whilst not the most expensive rod on the market, these trusty wands (they are truly magical!) have served me well in a variety of angling situations. I’ve been so impressed by the rod blank, finish and overall package, that I’ve probably used them for about 90% of my fishing this season. They have coped admirably with everything from trotting a float for grayling, casting 4oz feeders for barbel, carp to well over 20lb, specimen tench and bream fishing, and finally, as a real test, they helped me land a 32lb catfish on a size 16 barbless hook to 6lb! Admittedly, it took me an hour, but the forgiving action coupled with real grunt in the butt section saw me win the battle in the end. Check out the other Sonik rods, I also use the SK4 lure rod which is equally as impressive! I have to admit surprise at the results I’ve obtained this year with Marukyu Credence Corn. I’m not really a fan of artificial baits (and this isn’t), but whilst I was on the team at Marukyu, I achieved results which quite simply blew away my doubts. Credence Corn is marketed as a ‘natural artificial’ and whilst I won’t divulge any secrets, it is remarkable stuff. Now available in white, red and natural yellow varieties, this is a resilient, attractive corn hookbait that stays on the hair despite the attentions of smaller fish, and has accounted for many of my better specimens this year... including the 32lb cat fish mentioned above! I’m not backed by bargain discount chain B&M stores either, but one of the best things I’ve purchased this year has to be a thermal ‘onesie’ for just £8.99. Having seen such garments advertised for sale at almost £50 by some companies, my B&M special is thin enough to go on under outerwear (I’d never be seen dead in it obviously!) and really has made a difference to my winter angling; so much so, that I can often be seen without my jacket on in even the coldest conditions. A full length zip makes certain functions easy (and accessible), Superbly located for Holidays & Short Stays Quality furnished log cabins, sleep up to 6. WiFI Friendly. Seven well-stocked fishing lakes on 40 acres in the beautiful Lincolnshire Countryside. 30 acres of woodland - 10 acre wildflower meadow Carp to 15lb - F1s to 3lb - Tench 8lb - 100lb Match Weights Full tackle and bait shop on site, full licensed bar. Cafe open 7 days a week. Day tickets available at £6 A la carte evening menu

sleeves and ankles are elasticated, and the hood can utilised or hidden away... toasty warm! Finally, and this is a blatant product plug, I’ve been accepted onto the team at Vardis Tackle recently, and I’ve been greatly impressed with everything in the range. I have to admit, I was lucky enough to be able to turn down a couple of offers to join other companies after leaving Marukyu, but the Vardis terminal tackle has to be some of the best on the market, which is one of the reasons I accepted a gracious offer to help promote the tackle. I’ve been after an all encompassing range of terminal gear for a while, one which fits together seamlessly, and has all the right bits for the fishing I enjoy; I’ve definitely found it at Vardis. The team of anglers are all good lads too, pulling in the same direction, so product development and testing is done quickly, professionally and with a smile before being released to the retail market. If you are on the lookout for a catalogue of terminal tackle which does ‘what it says on the tin’, then I would strongly recommend a visit to www. vardistackle.co.uk to find your nearest stockist!

Last Saturday saw the last action of 2014 in the County Senior League as the league has a break for a fortnight over the Christmas and New Year period. So far we have seen 317 games this season, with 1381 goals scored. That’s an average of nearly 4.5 goals a game! The County Senior League returns to action on the 3rd January. S&HCFA Association Cup 3rd Round This week we must start in the Association Cup, where Kiveton Park of Division One claimed the scalp of Athersley Recreation Reserves of the Premier Division. Kade Garforth scored the only goal of the game for Kiveton Park in a tight affair at Sheerien Park. Kiveton will play the winner of Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves/Parkgate Reserves v Kirkburton in the Quarter-Finals in early 2015. League Cup 3rd Round Premier Division Leaders Swinton Athletic were made to sweat in their League Cup 3rd Round tie against Sheffield Bankers of Division One. The tie was level at 1-1 after 120 minutes, but Swinton booked their place in the next round with a 3-0 victory on penalty kicks. S&HCFA Junior Cup 3rd Round Handsworth Parramore U21’s were able to carry their excellent league form into their Junior Cup tie against Euroglaze. A man of the match performance from Will Eades helped Handsworth to a 6-2 win. Eades scored once and assisted more goals to help his teams cause.

SHEFFIELD’S NUMBER ONE SPORTS BARS 255 ECCLESALL ROAD | S11 8NX LOXLEY NEW ROAD | S6 4NG WWW.CHAMPSSHEFFIELD.COM the First Division, following their 7-1 win over Sheffield Athletic on Saturday. Thomas Beech took the accolades for a fine performance, scoring five times. AFC Dronfield were held to a 2-2 draw by Millmoor Juniors Reserves at Gosforth Playing Fields. The point is enough to take Millmoor Juniors out of the bottom three for Christmas. Rotherham Town made it three league wins on the spin with a 3-2 win over Silkstone United at Herringthorpe Leisure Centre. Division Two Caribbean Sports claimed an impressive 2-1 away win over league leaders Byron House. Caribbean are up to third place in the table, and are unbeaten in the league since Wednesday 3rd September. Byron House still have a healthy lead at the top of the league of 11 points, but this loss means the end of their unbeaten home record. Bottom side Bawtry Town claimed their first league win of the season, with a 4-2 win over fifth placed Maltby Main Reserves at the Keepmoat Stadium. The result is not enough to lift Bawtry, but shows a solid improvement from Bawtry who lost the reverse fixture 4-0 on the opening day of the season. Frecheville Reserves moved up to fourth form the bottom with a big 6-2 home win over Parkgate Reserves. Frecheville start 2015 with a big home game against Bawtry Town. New Bohemians made it three consecutive league wins, with an emphatic 6-1 victory over Sheffield Lane Top at the Civil Service Ground.

U21 Division Athersley Recreation U21 made it five wins from their previous six league games, with a 2-0 win away against Denaby United U21. Athersley are in second place in the table, only separated from Houghton Main U21 by a worse goal difference. Alex Lill scored four times for Swallownest Miners Welfare U21 to help them to an entertaining 7-3 win over Millmoor Juniors U21 at Grange Park. Jack Denton, Mubarek Gabdon and Ryan Hall were also on target for the U21 Cup finalists. Struggling Davy FC U21 ended a run of three straight defeats with a point against North Gawber Colliery U21, as Division One Thorpe Hesley climbed back to the summit of they drew 3-3 at Davy Sports Ground. Premier Division Swallownest Miners Welfare played their first County Senior League game for three weeks on Saturday, when they hosted Wickersley. They showed no signs of rustiness though, as goals from Jason Short (2), Jack Farrow and Jamie Hopkins gave them a 4-0 win. Swallownest go into the Christmas break in fourth place. Oughtibridge WMFC recorded their fourth straight league win, with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Millmoor Juniors at Grange Park. Oughtibridge are now fifth in the table, but only four points off leaders Swinton Athletic.

4 POINT WEEKEND FOR THE STEELERS KEEPS THEM TOP OF THE LEAGUE The Steelers remained top of the Elite Ice Hockey League with a 4-3 road win against the Hull Stingrays on Sunday evening. The result rounded off a 4 point weekend for Gerad Adams side who defeated the Stingrays 5-2 at the Arena on Saturday. Mathieu Roy was again the star of the show scoring twice on Sunday evening in Hull taking his tally to 23 for the season to date. It was Colton Fretter who put the Steelers in to an early lead in Hull scoring at 7.01 With the Stingrays player coach Omar Pacha sitting out a interference penalty the Steelers doubled their advantage on the powerplay through Mathieu Roy at 13.18 When Robert Dowd made it 3-0 just 6.31 in to the middle period the game looked over and the points already on their way back to Sheffield. The Stingrays though battled hard and scored two unanswered goals through Pacha and Eric

Galbraith to bring the score back to 2-3 Roy struck his second with 93 seconds remaining of the 2nd period to take the momentum away from Hull and give the Steelers their two goal advantage. Carl Lauzon scored a late consolation goal for the Stingrays at the end of the third period but the Steelers claimed the points, final score: Hull Stingrays 3-4 STEELERS Head coach Gerad Adams said "That was a tough weekend for us. Hull are an ever improving team that played hard on both Saturday and Sunday. They will take points off a lot teams in the second half of the year for sure. "I was pleased how we played all night. We had some calls go against us and kept our composure throughout the game. Every player played their part. Mathieu Roy again scored the big goals and we take the 4 points earned this weekend into the holiday period. "We look forward to the two Christmas games against Nottingham, heading into those fixtures we will be top of the league and that is a nice feeling to have" The Steelers were without the services of Dustin Kohn on Sunday after he picked up a knock in Saturdays home fixture "We are hoping it isn't anything too serious for Dustin. Him missing on Sunday was more preventative. I expect him to be available against Nottingham on Boxing Day".

MILLERS END WINLESS RUN AT WIGAN Rotherham United breathed new life into their Championship campaign with a superb 2-1 victory over fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic. The Millers brought their recent winless run to an end in fine style as goals from Tom Lawrence and Alex Revell, just a minute after Ben Watson had equalised, ensured the Millers’ edged the Roses battle at the DW Stadium. For the trip over the Pennines, Millers chief Steve Evans retained faith in his starting line-up for the third successive game following encouraging draws with Cardiff and Nottingham Forest in their last two outings. On the home bench, there was a familiar face as James Tavernier was named amongst the Latics’ substitutes after starring in the Millers’ League One promotion push last term. Following a quiet opening, Icelandic international Kari Arnason had Craig Morgan to thank after his mishit clearance almost put James McClean in the clear but the Millers skipper was on-hand to snuff out the danger. Minutes later, Callum McManaman embarked on a mazy run from the left flank which saw him race away from Emmanuel Ledesma before showing fleet of foot to evade the attentions of Paul Green and Morgan in the box but from an acute angle, ‘keeper Adam Collin was able to block his drilled effort at the near post. In the next phase of play, McClean blazed an effort over the bar before McManaman showed clever footwork to work a shooting position on the edge of the box to fire a snap effort which was bravely blocked by Morgan, with the home fans vainly appealing for a handball against the visiting skipper. In their first foray of note, the Millers sprung a quick-counter attack and fine footwork from Richie Smallwood saw Revell and Lawrence exchange passes to pave the way for the ex-Orient striker to fire an instinctive effort which stung the palms of England ‘keeper Scott Carson and Ledesma pounced on the loose ball to weave his way towards goal before drilling a low effort which failed to trouble the home goal. Moments later, Revell was almost the lucky beneficiary of James Perch’s weak backpass but Carson was on his toes to clear just in the nick of time before Watson screwed an effort wide despite having the goal at his mercy after the Millers failed to clear Shaun Maloney’s corner decisively. Just shy of the half hour, Leon Barnett had to be

ROVERS PENALTY DOWNS ROBINS Doncaster Rovers ended Swindon Town’s five match winning streak with a 1-0 win courtesy of Theo Robinson’s first half penalty. Robinson’s calmness from the spot could not be matched by Mark Cooper’s Robins who spurned their chance to go top of the League One table when Michael Smith saw his penalty saved late on. Paul Dickov – who witnessed his side pick up their sixth away win in the league – made one change from the side which was defeated by Gillingham at home last week with Dean Furman replacing Curtis Main. The visitors snuffed out Town’s efforts early on and, with chances at a premium, the first real talking point came on seventeen minutes when Nathan Thompson’s gentle back pass bobbled over the foot of goalkeeper Wes Foderingham, who was relieved to see the ball trickle just wide of his left post. The frustration among the home support was tangible and was exacerbated when tricky wing back Nathan Byrne went down in the area under a challenge from Enda Stevens and the referee waved play on. Within 30 seconds, James Coppinger picked a pass from the left flank for Furman to latch on to. The South Africa captain was adjudged to have been fouled by Jordan Turnbull, which left Robinson with the responsibility of converting, which he did, with a powerfully hit penalty just past Foderingham’s outstretched right arm. The game’s fractious nature – epitomised by the fact that there were six yellow cards in the game; five of which went to Doncaster – continued until the half time interval with Foderingham’s tremendous

on-hand to snuff out Ben Pringle’s tantalising centre before Ledesma’s powerful run ended with the Argentinian blazing an effort over the bar following good work by Smallwood. At the other end, Don Cowie’s bobbling effort through a ruck of bodies failed to trouble the away goal before Reece James unleashed a piledriver from distance which was arrowing towards the Latics goal but the ball struck Perch en-route which took the sting out of the shot. Moments later, Maloney cynically upended Lawrence after Rotherham launched a lightning counter-attack to halt the momentum of the move but the Scottish international escaped sanction before Green harshly became the first to see yellow for hauling down Chris McCann in the home side’s next attack. Minutes later, the Millers had their best opportunity to date when Ledesma’s eye-of-a-needle pass was threaded into the advancing run of Lawrence, who advanced menacingly towards the Latics’ goal but as the Leicester loanee looked to shoot, Perch made a superb last-ditch tackle to keep the scores level. The visitors were looking the most likely and following fine interplay, Revell was given an opportunity to fire goalwards but Carson stood up tall to block his fierce effort before Ledesma showed clever footwork to give Revell another chance at the near post but he was snuffed out by retreating defenders. However, the visitors did not have to wait long to make the decisive breakthrough as Lawrence notched his first goal for the club. The home side failed to deal with as long punt upfield as a wayward header had the Latics at sixes and sevens, and Andrew Taylor attempted to head the ball back to Carson but a mix-up which saw a retreating defender lose his footing gave Lawrence an unchallenged run to goal and he kept his nerve to calmly slot the ball past the advancing home ‘keeper. The young striker’s joy soon turned to despair as he was harshly adjudged to have wrestled Barnett to the floor, which earned him a yellow card before the referee brought the curtain down on the first half. Following the restart, McCann joined him in the book for hauling over Ledesma before Wigan had skipper Emmerson Boyce to thank for preventing Lawrence striking goalwards following Revell’s deft flick forward. Moments later, Ledesma’s error paved the way for Taylor to float an inviting centre which saw McCann ghost away from his marker but he fluffed his lines with a scuffed effort which failed to trouble Collin. The home side had faint appeals for a spot-kick when Maloney’s cross-cum-shot struck Green in the box before Rotherham turned defence into attack in the blink of an eye and James’ threaded ball saw save from Luke McCullough’s firm header, the only incident of note. The Robins rallied in the second half and at times laid siege to the Rovers goal with some last ditch defending and, crucially, luck coming to away team’s rescue. First it was the turn of rangy striker Jon Obika to smack Sam Johnstone’s upright, on 50 minutes, after his low drive took a wicked deflection off McCullough. Ten minutes later, Johnstone, who by and large, had a quiet first half had more than his fair share to do in the second and was delighted to see the ball flash wide of his post when striker Andy Williams was clean through on goal. With Rovers holding firm, the hosts got more adventurous, however were nearly caught out when a deep corner from the visitors saw Andy Butler hurl himself forward to plant a header just wide of Foderingham’s goal and cannon off the goal stanchion. For all Swindon’s endeavour, it looked to be a fruitless afternoon for the Wiltshire side and after having another couple of penalty appeals turned down, the referee – more through an accumulation of infringements – finally pointed to the spot when Reece Wabara grappled with Williams on 80 minutes. Substitute Michael Smith underhit his spot kick and saw Rovers’ on loan goalkeeper, Johnstone, make a routine save down to his left. The hosts piled the pressure on late on but their goal was elusive. Harry Forrester came close to adding a fortunate second when his near post shot deflected off Foderingham and on to the post, but the frantic 94th minute goal line clearance by Enda Stevens summed up the afternoon. An outswinging corner was met by the head of the impressive Nathan Thompson and, with Rovers scrambling bodies back, Stevens adjusted his position to make one last vital block and ensure Dickov’s side claimed a valuable three points.

Lawrence show clever footwork to jink into the box before Revell struck a snap shot which was straight down the throat of Carson. Leeds loanee Scott Wootton became the next to see yellow for a high kick on Taylor by the touchline and the home side almost made them pay from the resultant free-kick when Watson swung an inviting centre which was met by the head of Marc-Antoine Fortune at the far stick but his bundled header was comfortably gathered by Collin. The Millers failed to heed the warning as Malky Mackay’s side got themselves back on level terms just past the hour mark. After McClean’s corner was bundled behind, the Ireland international had another opportunity to put a dangerous centre into the box and Watson ghosted from the pack with a near post run to power a header which hit the roof of the net giving Collin no chance. However, Wigan’s joy proved short-lived after Rotherham regained the lead almost straight from the kick-off. Following a free-kick award, Ledesma curled a tantalising centre which saw Revell emerge from a ruck of bodies to rise highest and his looping header saw Carson look back nervously as the ball dipped under the crossbar before nestling in the heart of the home goal. The home fans’ frustration was evident when McClean saw yellow for a wild hack on Ledesma before Revell tried his luck with a speculative effort from distance but his tame effort was saved comfortably by Collin. The Millers wasted two opportunities to seal the deal when firstly a lightning counter-attack involving Ledesma and Green saw sub Jordan Bowery drill a cross-cum-shot which Taylor fortunately hacked clear before Bowery turned provider moments later, when his perfectly-weighted pass saw Revell poke goalwards but agonisingly for the visitors’, the ball rolled narrowly wide of the upright. The visitors were almost made to pay for their misses when sub Oriol Riera’s neat flick saw Fortune shrug off the attentions of his marker to work a shooting position but he blasted over from point-blank range despite having the goal at his mercy. With time running out, the Millers were living on their nerves when McManaman got the better of James to float a delightful cross which saw Riera get infront of his marker to power a fierce header which smashed against the visitors’ crossbar. Minutes later, the away fans had their hearts in their mouths when Morgan appeared to bundle over Fortune in the box but referee Keith Stroud waved away home appeals before Green put his body on the line to block Fortune’s drilled shot in the home side’s last foray of note as the Millers hung on for their second away of the season.

Reece Wabara says that training on Christmas Day is part and parcel of the job of being a professional footballer. “This is my job, this is what I get paid for and you have to do what’s asked of you. I don’t think it’s a burden, it’s a job and I’ll get on with it,” he said. “To be honest, I enjoy it. I enjoy the regular games, even if it gets tiring. I don’t like waiting, the more you play, the better you become. “We worked really hard as a team, it wasn’t the prettiest of games but we’ve got the points and a clean sheet. We were very organised but we had every faith – especially with our away form – that we would get a result.” Wabara said that talks over a new contract were ongoing and that he’s more focussed on altering the side’s alarming poor home form; starting with Coventry City on Boxing Day. “We’re in talks at the moment and we’ll see what happens. Ive played every minute of every game and I’m enjoying that to be honest. I’m getting games and some consistency. “Paul Dickov has had faith in me from day one and I appreciate that so hopefully we can sort it out and we can push on. “I think if you go ‘player-for-player’ there aren’t many sides better than us. We just need to get the results that we know we’re capable of. We want the fans to stay behind us, we need the good atmosphere in the stadium because that gives us an extra push. “Maybe, going forward, we need to make sure we don’t get beat and take what we’re given, that includes making a solid base for ourselves and nicking a 1-0 here or there because we shouldn’t be getting beat.“

BLADES NEWS2014/15 O’GRADY’S FIRST BLADES GOAL JUST NOT ENOUGH Despite the cup heroics, the Blades are still trying to find a formula to pick up home wins in the league. Chris O’Grady’s first Blades goal gave Nigel Clough’s side the lead in the final game before Christmas but Walsall levelled through Tom Bradshaw. The Blades were the aggressors for the majority of the game but were unable to claim a winner. United’s team showed four changes - Scougall, Baxter and O’Grady returned, whilst Adams made his first Sky Bet League One appearance after impressing in the Capital One Cup quarter-final in midweek. Reed and CampbellRyce missed out, whilst McNulty and Cuvelier dropped to the bench. Baxter partnered O’Grady in attack as the Blades began with an orthodox 4-4-2 formation and both were to feature quite heavily in the first half, although chances were not particularly fruitful. The first of the day was

for visitors but Basham prevented Bradshaw’s shot from troubling Howard. A couple of Flynn crosses then put United on the offensive in the space of a couple of minutes. His first found Baxter unmarked but he headed over and the second resulted in a shot from O’Grady being deflected to make it easy for goalkeeper O’Donnell. Around the half hour a Harris cross found Scougall but his header was comfortably saved by the visiting goalkeeper, whilst a rare Walsall attack saw Cook’s free-kick strike the Blades wall. Close to half-time O’Grady headed Baxter’s free-kick over the crossbar and there was a cheer from the crowd - all stands when referee Horwood was replaced by fourth official Wootton. In first half injury-time, which came about by the change of official, the Blades went mightily close to opening the scoring but following good interchange play,

Adams laid off to Baxter, whose deflected shot struck the crossbar. McGahey replaced the injured Flynn at half-time and United again started positively, there were a number of forays into the Walsall half before the opening goal on 56 minutes. Baxter threaded a pass down the side of the visiting defence and O’GRADY picked his moment before beating O’Donnell at his near post. United’s lead, however, lasted just three minutes as Walsall netted with their next attack. Cook’s cross from the left found BRADSHAW in a pocket of space and the subsequent header wrong-footed Howard, dropping into the bottom corner of the net. Walsall went close to adding a second on 64 minutes but Cook’s cross-shot was kicked over his own crossbar by Harris, whilst United hit back with two long-range efforts from Baxter and Harris, both of which went close. Walsall’s Bradshaw

flashed a shot across goal following a break and United threw on McNulty for the final 15 minutes. Adams wanted but was denied a penalty after a clash with Henry, the full debutant was replaced soon after by Cuvelier, who came close to attaching himself to a deep O’Grady cross on 86 minutes. Late on Walsall were content to keep possession and slow the action down to protect a point. A shot from O’Grady was saved and four minutes of injury time produced two corners but the Blades were unable to find an elusive second. Blades: Howard, Harris, Basham, Flynn (McGahey 45), Doyle, Murphy, Scougall, Baxter (McNulty 75), McEveley, Adams (Cuvelier 84), O’Grady. Unused: Higdon, Turner, McCarthy, Wallace. Walsall: O’Donnell, Purkiss, Downing, A. Chambers, Bradshaw, Sawyers (Grimes 85), Baxendale (Forde 56), Cain, J. Chambers, Cook (Benning 76), Henry. Unused: O’Connor, MacGillivray, Flanagan,Manset.

CLOUGH DISAPPOINTED

Nigel Clough admitted he was disappointed to only take a point from Saturday’s Sky Bet League One clash with Walsall at Bramall Lane. Chris O’Grady’s first Blades goal put the hosts in charge of the game, but the lead lasted only three minutes as Tom Bradshaw levelled for the Saddlers an Clough felt that was the turning point of the fixture, despite United being the team pressing for a winner. Looking back on the point, the Gaffer remarked: “It is another frustrating draw, because like at Fleetwood we have got our noses in front and not gone on to win the game. “Walsall getting their equaliser so soon after Chris O’Grady’s opener

gave them a massive lift and went along way to the final result. “We needed keep things tight for 10-15 minutes after our goal and really make them think about how they were going to get back into the game, but we haven’t and paid the price.” Clough was delighted with O’Grady’s performance, whilst the Blades boss also praised Che Adams and explained why Marc McNulty, Louis Reed and Florent Cuvelier weren’t able to start the game.“Marc McNulty was carrying a thigh injury from Tuesday night, that’s why he didn’t start and Che offered us fresh legs as much as anything else.”

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

OWLS NEWS2014/15 OWLS HAVE DAY TO FORGET WE HAVE TO BE BETTER Wednesday had a day to forget in the capital as they went down to Fulham at Craven Cottage. First half goals from Ross McCormack and Shaun Hutchinson laid the foundation for victory, sealed after the break by Lasse Vigen Christensen and Cauley Woodrow. The Owls had their moments but nothing to trouble Marcus Bettinelli in the Cottagers’ goal and the home side ran out comfortable winners. It was hard on the 5,000+ travelling hordes, who were in good voice from the outset as their team sought to bounce back from last week’s late home loss to Wolves. And they almost had something to cheer early on when Tom Lees found space at the back post from a Chris Maguire corner but the defender hit over the crossbar. The Cottagers, though, went closer still moments later as Christensen rounded Keiren Westwood but Lees was back in the nick of time to clear the danger. Hugu Rodallega then tested Westwood with a daisycutter before Lees headed goalwards at the other end and the ball

was heading in off May before Stafylidis cleared off the line. But it was Fulham who made the breakthrough ten minutes before half time. The Owls conceded a free kick 25 yards out and McCormack delivered a sublime shot that curled away from Westwood and into the far corner. Wednesday hit back with a Jeremy Helan run and drive that whistled wide but then suffered a hammer blow right on the whistle. From another set piece, Rodallega sent over a looping feed and Hutchinson climbed high to bury beyond Westwood. It gave the Owls an uphill battle and Stuart Gray made two changes, with Royston Drenthe and Atdhe Nuhiu entering the fray in West London.

And as the second period unfolded, Wednesday certainly had the bit between their teeth, forcing a string of corners that threatened the Fulham goal. The danger, though, was the hosts’ quality on the break and so it proved on 68 minutes when a swift counter ended with Christensen coolly slotting home from 12 yards. The same player might have made it four just after the restart but Westwood reacted smartly to smother almost on his goal line. Fulham went on to boss possession in the closing stages with the game out of Wednesday’s reach and applied the final coating of gloss from the spot in stoppage time after Claude Dielna fouled Patrick Roberts in the box.

Stuart Gray looked back on the 4-0 reverse at Fulham and rued the fact that Wednesday failed to make their significant share of possession count. The Cottagers displayed a ruthlessness in front of goal the Owls lacked, which was exacerbated by the way in which the game panned out. For all the visitors’

dominance of play at times, it was that allimportant touch in front of goal that ultimately decided the destination of the points. And Gray said: “I lost count of the number of times the ball flashed across the six-yard box and we have to be better in terms of getting on the end of these balls. “We have to see

someone willing to put their body on the line in those kind of situations. “I’m standing here and wondering how we have lost that game 4-0 but when you give a side like Fulham the chances we did, you can expect to be punished. “We didn’t really work the goalkeeper and that has got to change.”

GRAY SALUTES WEDNESDAY FANS

Stuart Gray has paid tribute to the 4,000+ following from Sheffield that lit up Craven Cottage on Saturday. Despite going down 4-0 to Fulham, the Wednesday hordes remained in superb voice

throughout the capital clash, prompting some glowing words from the Owls’ head coach. He said: “They were magnificent. I have never know supporters like them. “They sang and bounced from the first minute to

the last and I can’t thank them enough. “But they have been like that all season, at home and away from home, all over the country. “Sheffield Wednesday are very, very fortunate to have the kind of support we have.”

UNDER-21S GO DOWN TO LIVERPOOL

Owls coach Lee Bullen was left to rue costly defensive mistakes as the Under-21s were defeated 4-1 by Liverpool on Monday. The Premier League outfit ran out comfortable winners with goals from Jack Dunn (2), Jerome Sinclair and Kevin Stewart sealing the win at Kirkby Academy. Midfielder Ryan Meadows scored a consolation goal for the

visitors. Bullen said: “Liverpool deserved to win. They were better than us, which you probably would expect. The four goals we conceded were very sloppy and avoidable. One or two of our lads played below their standards and we got punished for individual mistakes.” “It was a great experience for myself and the team. Hopefully the guys will have

learned a lot from the experience. It was a fantastic opportunity to go over and play against a top team. “It has been a fantastic eye opener for the guys. It comes down to decision making at this level. “We tried to play short passes and got picked off two or three times rather than mixing things up and playing further forward.”
