“THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN VOICE” RETURNS FOR HOMETOWN SHOW Paul Carrack’s middle name should be prolific. He knows that when you’re on a roll, you don’t take your foot off the gas. That’s why he’s unveiling another outstanding addition to his album catalogue barely a year after the last, and why he’s back on the road playing at Sheffield City Hall on Saturday 31st January just a few months after the completion of his most successful tour to date. ‘Rain Or Shine’ is the swift successor to 2012’s chart album ‘Good Feeling,’ which produced such radio favourites in the title song and ‘Time To Move On.’ It’s the latest in Carrack’s line of distinguished solo releases, which since 2000 he’s made for his own Carrack-UK label. Once again he’s blending new compositions, including ‘Stepping Stone,’ ‘Life’s Too Short’

and the first single ‘That’s All That Matters To Me,’ with hand-picked covers of such soul and pop gems as ‘If Loving You Is Wrong,’ ‘Losing You’ and three songs recorded by one of Paul’s musical heroes, Ray Charles. As a hugely popular recording and touring artist, the voice behind a songbook of household hits and the owner of his own label, Carrack is an independent, one-man engine room. He has staying power that would put young artists to shame, and this time he’s even surprised himself with how quickly another fine album has arrived. Tickets for Paul Carrack (subject to booking fees) are available online at www. sheffieldcityhall.co.uk over the phone on 0114 2 789 789 or in person at the Sheffield City Hall Box Office.

Weekly Wit With...

ALBERT SNODGRASS

Two women were playing golf. One teed off and watched in horror as her ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole. The ball hit one of the men. He immediately clasped his hands together at his groin, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in agony. The woman rushed down to the man, and immediately began to apologize. “Please allow me to help. I’m a Physical Therapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you’d allow me,” she told him. “Oh, no, I’ll be all right. I’ll be fine in a few minutes,” the man replied. He was in obvious agony, lying in the fetal position, still clasping his hands there at his groin. At her persistence, however, he finally allowed her to help. She gently took his hands away and laid them to the side, loosened his pants and put her hands inside. She administered tender and artful massage for several long moments and asked, “How does that feel”? “Feels great,” he replied; “But I still think my thumb’s broken!” All the gym bunnies moaning about the newbies. Get over yourselves. You didn’t see us moaning when you came to use our pubs in December.

NEWS & INFORMATION

SHEFFIELD IS THE UK’S BEST CITY FOR COUNTRYSIDE LOVERS

It’s official – Sheffield is the best city in the UK for those who love the outdoors. With a huge 71 per cent of the overall vote, Sheffield beat cities including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Bristol in a BBC Countryfile poll to find the Best UK City for Countryside Lovers. More than 7,000 people voted in the online poll, the result of which was revealed on 22 December, and Sheffield gained more than 5,500 of those votes. Edinburgh finished in a very distant second place, with 21 per cent of the vote. Councillor Isobel Bowler, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “I am extremely pleased that this poll has confirmed something we in Sheffield know already – that the city really is the best in the UK for people who love the outdoors. “With a third of our city within the boundaries of the Peak District National Park, as well as stunning countryside which was showcased to the world during the spectacular Tour de France Grand Depart this summer, there really is no other major UK city as in touch with the outdoors as Sheffield is. “We’re home to runners, climbers, mountain bikers and hikers, many of whom come to Sheffield to study at university and never leave, after falling in love with the city’s hills,

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LONG-TERM CONDITION

If you, or someone you know, has a longterm health condition - such as asthma, diabetes, MS, or a chest, heart, liver or kidney complaint – take control this winter by taking a few simple steps. Get a flu jab It can protect you all winter. If you have a long term health condition and you catch flu you’re at a greater risk of complications. The flu jab is quick and free for those with underlying health conditions as well as over 65s, pregnant women and carers. Contact your GP surgery to find out details of flu clinics or to book an appointment. Don’t forget you need a new flu jab each year. Visit your pharmacy Sounds simple, but the pharmacist will give you advice on the best over the counter medication for common winter complaints such as coughs and colds that suit your condition and medication you may already be taking. They will also advise you about what remedies to keep in your medicine cabinet – from pain relief, to antiseptic cream and plasters for minor cuts and bruises. Remember there are a number of pharmacists open out of hours and over Christmas and New Year. They can be found on www.sheffieldccg. nhs.uk under ‘Your Health / Feeling unwell / pharmacist opening times’ http://www. sheffieldccg.nhs.uk/Your-Health/pharmacychristmas-opening-times-2014.htm. Catch it, Kill it, Bin it A lot of us will have a cough or cold at some point this winter. Don’t spread your germs. Cough or sneeze into a tissue, put it in the bin and then wash your hands to stop the spread of germs. It really is that simple. Use symptom relief from the pharmacy and take plenty

valleys, rivers and moors. “I am also pleased that this result further confirms that we are indeed the Outdoor Capital City of the UK.” In October this year, research by the Sport Industry Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University confirmed that Sheffield is the undisputed Outdoor Capital City of the UK. The independent study found that outdoor recreation in Sheffield generates more than £53m in economic output a year, in addition to engaging people in outdoor activity and generating significant health benefits. It also revealed that Sheffield’s passion for the outdoors generates a higher than average expenditure on trips and outdoor gear, with total consumer spending on the outdoors estimated at being around £93m a year. Sheffield-based businesses doing well in the outdoors industry include Go Outdoors, the UK’s largest specialist retailer of camping equipment, tents, outdoor clothing and footwear, and Planet X, which sells more than 10,000 bicycle products worldwide and is currently the second-biggest bike assembler in the UK. At the same time, Sheffield’s reputation as a centre for outdoor adventure has won the attention of the Outdoor Industries Association (OIA), which has selected Sheffield to host the

2015 European Outdoor Summit (EOS). The EOS 2015 will be run by the UK’s Outdoor Industries Association in 2015 and will bring the biggest outdoor brands in the world to Sheffield. Previous venues have included Annecy in France and Stockholm in Sweden. Sheffield has also been selected to host the International Adventure Conference 2015, in further recognition of the city’s reputation for excellence in the outdoors. Councillor Leigh Bramall, cabinet member for business, skills and development at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are building ambitious plans to use our status as the Uk’s Outdoor Capital City to go out there and sell Sheffield to the world. “We have already been doing this successfully, as our hosting of the European Outdoor Summit and the International Adventure Conference next year proves. “The result of the Countryfile poll demonstrates that our status is recognised beyond Sheffield. We have a huge opportunity to build on this unique selling point. “We need to ensure our fantastic combination of urban living and outdoor recreation is maximised to market the city nationally and internationally, grow visitor numbers and drive inward investment.”

An online survey carried out as part of the Sport Industry Research Centre study found that the best thing about living in Sheffield is that it is the “best of both worlds” – a combination of urban living and access to the outdoors. A huge 66 per cent of people in Sheffield take part in outdoor recreation overall – more than six per cent above the national average of 59 per cent. An audit showed that in terms of participation rates and economic importance, Sheffield is synonymous with climbing, cycling, walking and running. In addition to being the climbing capital of the UK, with more than 10,000 Sheffield-based climbers and the highest number of climbing businesses compared to neighbouring major UK cities, Sheffield has more than 1,200 members in the Sheffield Ramblers and 26 running clubs, has a strong fell running scene, is nationally renowned for mountain biking and is home to the country’s only city centre mountain biking facility, at Parkwood Springs.

HENDERSON’S CANINE TRIO FIND FOREVER HOMES Three dogs who are the stars of special edition bottles of Henderson’s Relish are celebrating after finding their forever homes. Freddy, Dougie and Dibnah, who were all residents at the Sheffield Retired Greyhound Trust’s farm at Gosling Moor in Wortley, were chosen to front the campaign to promote greyhound adoption and are now looking forward to spending 2015 with their new families. Dibnah, whose previous owner had sadly died, found a home with the Stead family - Sue and Lyndon and their 10 year old son, Luke just two days after arriving at the Trust’s farm. Luke, who suffers from asthma, was devastated when he had to give up a kitten after two weeks due to his allergies, so the family decided to volunteer at the kennels by walking the greyhounds. Luke suffered no effects when spending time with the dogs and, when the family met Dibnah, they were charmed by her and decided they wanted to take her home. Sue, from Wisewood, said: “Dibnah, or Dibby as we call her, has just slotted right in to our family. Taking her home is the best decision we ever made. Luke

is an only child so she has become like his sister – and he won’t go anywhere without her! “I’d recommend anyone looking for a dog to consider adopting a greyhound. I’ve never known an animal to be so friendly and, not only that, she is so easy to look after and very low maintenance.” Unlike Dibnah, Dougie and Freddy had been with the Trust for 13 months before being adopted, but were both recently lucky enough to go to their new homes. Dougie caught the eye of Gillian and Tim Needham, who live in Fulwood. After attending a race night at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, volunteers from the Trust were outside and Gillian fell in love with the breed there and then. Just a few weeks later, the couple adopted Dougie, who is now settling in with his new family. Gillian, 48, said: “Dougie is a lovely dog and is so well behaved. He’s made himself right at home and has found his spot on the sofa – but it means Tim has lost his seat so has been relegated to the floor!” Freddy now lives in Woodhouse with owners Scott and Sam Melber, after the pair, who previously owned a lurcher,

decided to adopt a greyhound rather than buying a puppy. Scott, 26, said: “We saw a few greyhounds when we went to the kennels but Freddy stood out. Now it feels like he’s always been here. He loves a good fuss and is no trouble at all. He completes our family.” John Gilburn, chairman of the Sheffield branch of the RGT and managing director of Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, said: “The three dogs chosen to front the campaign all had different stories. Dibnah was a real success story after being rehomed so quickly, but the other two were still with us after a long time, so we are delighted that they have all now found their forever homes. “Although the dogs were rehomed before the bottles went on sale, the unique partnership with Henderson’s Relish has been a fantastic way for us to highlight the importance of greyhound adoption, showcasing the lovely dogs that are available for rehoming and how they make excellent family pets. We look forward to hearing of many more success stories as a result of the campaign.” For more information about the Trust, to help give a dog a home or volunteer at the farm email info@sheffieldretiredgreyhounds. co.uk, visit www. sheffieldretiredgreyhounds.co.uk or call 0114 288 8300.

I have never sampled the delights of a comedy club but the end of the old year and the beginning of the new presented an ideal opportunity to experience something for the first time. The last comedian I saw was in a more traditional working men’s club where the poor fellow had to battle against the frequent excursions of the audience to the bar, incessant chatter and heckling from some sections of the crowd and playing second on the bill to Bingo and Open the Box. Times have changed. The Last Laugh Comedy Club is regulated to ensure the performer has every-bodies attention. There are signs informing the audience not to chat during the acts, to switch off mobile phones, that the bars will be shut until the intervals and that you have to laugh a lot. Today’s comedians are more witty observers of human life than tellers of mother-in-law or Irishman jokes. Surprisingly there was no heckling. The audience were appreciative and willing to be the passive recipients of

the comedian’s perspective. There were few barriers to their storytelling. Laughter was not constant. When the comedian hit the right note with the audience it was belly laughing funny. But there were times when this did not happen and there were periods of silence or tittering which challenged them to up their game and make us laugh. There were three comedians on the bill plus compare BBC Radio Sheffield presenter Toby Foster. Top billing went to Daliso Chaponda who deservedly got the best response and outshone the others with his quick delivery and energy. He showed that he had mastered the art of working his audience with a well scripted routine that was contemporary and insightful. It was a good night finished off by a stonking disco set of ‘oldie’ hits which had the audience dancing and jiving into the New Year. Just one gripe. Why do present day comedians rely so much on the ‘F-word’ in their storytelling. Frequently being subjected to the ‘F-word’ as pronoun, adjective, noun and verb in a repetitive and scatter-gun fashion becomes tedious. It is enlightening that the best comedian of the night was the one who resorted to its use the least. Other comedians take note! The Last Laugh Comedy Club meets regularly at the City Hall, Sheffield. I would recommend a visit. Further details at www.lastlaughcomedy.com. Lawrence Whyte

Robin Hood & Babes in the Wood Penistone Theatre Group are back by popular demand with their annual Pantomime. Over the years this community group has built up a massive following producing Pantomimes which rival anything put on at the big City Theatres. A great night for all the family. This year they perform their own version of Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood. When King Richard goes off to fight the evil Saracens he makes the misguided decision to leave his two children with his brother, the Sheriff of Nottingham, for safekeeping. The Sheriff enlists the help of his old nanny Nurse Phillipa Bedpan to look after them at the Castle. When the he realises he will inherit his brother’s fortune should the Babes die, he hatches an evil plan to get rid of them. He tricks two simpletons, Cod & Piece to do the deed. They take the Babes deep into heart of the forest where they leave them to die. The outlaw Robin Hood hears of this wrong-doing and with the help of Maid Marian and his band of Merry Men (Friar Tuck, Little John, and Will Scarlett) he thwarts the plan and takes the children into hiding. Needless to say, the Sheriff is not a happy man. Oh No He Isn’t! In an attempt to lure Robin out of hiding the Sheriff organises an archery contest, the prize for which is Maid Marian’s hand in marriage. Will the Sheriff of Nottingham do away with the Sherwood do-gooders, marry Maid Marian for himself and commit the townsfolk to a life of tyranny and extortion? It has all the usual ingredients and a few more. Don’t miss this great show. Many performances sell out so book early.

THE MERCURY ROUND-UP OF 2014 26

by KT evans

It would be exceptionally difficult to dispute the fact that 2014 has been a fantastic year for British music. With the UK standing proud as one of the most successful countries to produce the world’s finest acts, this year has showcased just how talented our little island really is. Here at Mercury we therefore thought it fitting it supply you with the ultimate roundup of 2014… from top selling albums, singles, festival highlights, award winners and plenty more. So first up, cast your mind right back to February 2014 (can you really believe that is almost a year ago?!) to the annual awards ceremony The Brits. This year truly was in full dedication of one band alone, the Steel Cities most treasured performers who have safeguarded Sheffield as a crucially important city for British Music…no other that Arctic Monkeys. Scooping two awards on the night for Best British Band along with Best British Album, Alex Turners mind boggling acceptance speech however was unquestionably the talk of the night: “That rock ‘n’ roll, it just won’t go away. It might hibernate from time to time and sink back

into the swamp, but the cyclic nature of the universe in which it exists demands it adheres to some sort of rules…” Genius. On the topic of music ceremonies, the first ever BBC Music Awards were held this year, which once again brought to life just how relevant the UK has been for the international music industry. Hosted by Fearne Cotton, this ceremony received massive praise from bands and fans alike, who all enjoyed the sheer entertainment factor of the night. With Ed Sheeran taking home the top prize of Best British Act, alongside Leeds group Catfish And The Bottlemen who received Best Up And Coming Act, the BBC Music Awards is set to rival the Brits and Mobos…so keep your eyes peeled. Ed Sheeran has had a ridiculously successful year in 2014. His gigantic second album, ‘X’ flew straight into the number one chart position and has since been crowned the biggest selling album of the year. With over 182,000 copies shifted within its first week of release, the record has now been awarded 2X platinum status with BPI, the music trade body who represent the UK’s record labels. Speaking

If you have any news, reviews, releases/events you’d like us to cover please forward details to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk

about the mighty success of ‘X,’ Ed Sheeran said: “I’m so happy people have been enjoying my album so much – great to hear that it’s still the biggest seller of the year and has now gone double platinum too!” Along with Ed Sheeran, Pharell Williams has also had a year worth raising your glass too. His single ‘Happy,’ which was recently crowned as the most downloaded track of all time having sold 1.65 million copies according to the Official Charts Company data, stands loud and proud as the biggest song of 2014. ‘Happy,’ which was originally released in Summer 2013 as part of the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack, pushed past the one million sales mark in March and has racked up sales of over 1.42 million this year alone. The track earned Pharell his third million-selling single in the UK in less than a year after ‘Get Lucky’ with Daft Punk and ‘Blurred Lines’ with Robin Thicke. This sales feat has only previously been achieved by The Beatles. British classical pop quartet Clean Bandit also had a fantastic year in music, supplying the world with one of the biggest summer anthems we’ve heard in a lengthy amount of time. ‘Rather Be’ ft Jesse Glynne sold a massive 163,000 copies within its first week on sale, becoming the biggest weekly sale for a January number 1 single since Babylon Zoo’s ‘Spaceman’ in 1996. ‘Rather Be’ has since sold over 1.1 million copies and has ensured Clean Bandits are one of the acts of 2014. Another spectacular single of 2014 comes from US singer song writer and producer John Legend with his love ballad ‘All Of Me.’ The track has sold over 898,000 copies in total this year, spending a mammoth 18 weeks in the Official Singles Chart top 10 this year. The beautiful love song was written for John Legend’s wife Christine Teigen. To our favourite time of the year and one which we simply cannot wait for in 2015… festival season. We really were spoiled rotten in 2014 with a summer packed to the brim with bands, solo artists and performers all showcasing live throughout the UK. Glastonbury Festival played witness to headliner Dolly Parton (who played the Benny

Hill theme tune on a saxophone…bizarre as ever) whilst Metallica and Kasabian also tantalized crowds at the biggest music festival in the UK. Leeds Festival, held on August band holiday once again played to Sheffield’s favour, with our very own rock ‘n’ roll superstars Arctic Monkeys headlining the final Sunday night. Oozing sophisticated coolness from every pore within him, Alex Turner is forever pushing genre boundaries with his intricately crafted, twisted lyrics, which has often led to him being seen as the best lyricist of all time. Along with Leeds Festival, we also had Download 2014, which saw Sheffield’s Bring Me The Horizon and While She Sleeps take to the stage. Metal power-houses to the very core, Sheffield’s cross genre acts means the city has a spread everyone can enjoy. What a bloody fine year 2014 has been for music. With Sheffield standing proud as one of the primary supplies of the industries most important bands, the last twelve months however, truly lie in the hands of Arctic Monkeys. Now roll on 2015!

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

I think 2015 will be the year of the gadget for me... I’ve spent some money over Christmas and invested in a gizmo currently taking the angling world by storm, the Deeper Fishfinder! Admittedly, I’ve only used it a few times so far, and all have been on stillwater venues, but my initial impressions have been impressive indeed. Before I continue, I must point out that I am not an expert by any means in its operation, nor do I yet appreciate all of the options it offers, but as an everyday angler, I’ve had a play, and the future looks bright! It has a hefty price tag which at first look seems overly expensive; it isn’t. Once you realise just what the Deeper can do, you will realise that the rrp of £169.99 (may be cheaper online) for an item which may significantly assist the angler, is money well spent. Opening the pack, I was presented with the Deeper fishfinder, a charging pack, three securing bolts, neoprene pouch and all other associated bits and pieces required to get it up and running. The Deeper works in conjunction with an Android or Ios ‘app’ which is free to upload and which provides all the support needed to get it working. In reality, unless you are completely technically dyslexic, you should have no problems connecting your Deeper to the ‘app’ as long as you have the Bluetooth capability on your smart device; simply open Bluetooth, select the Deeper, connect, and go fishing! I must also advise that the ‘app’ will ONLY connect to the Deeper when it is on charge, or in the water, so don’t be disheartened when you remove the power source from your shiny new gadget and fail to connect! (Took me hour to work that one out!) It can be used from both boat and bank, weighs about 3.5oz, so make sure you have sufficiently strong tackle which will cast it out, and safely retrieve, otherwise it will be an expensive ‘crack off’, or alternatively, use the flexible arm (not supplied) to attach to the boat. It is automatically powered on when in contact with water, and automatically connects with the Deeper ‘app’ when opened; it really is that simple to use. Chuck it out, open ‘app’, learn the secrets below the water! Easy, but there is so much more to Deeper! The ‘app’ allows the angler to make a complete and comprehensive log of the session. A map (GPS locate required) marks the exact spot, there is a camera option which enables a quick snap of the peg/swim to be taken without having to close the ‘app’, a calendar which even includes moon phases, a notepad, weather conditions, a share option, and a huge number of settings means that Deeper is an extremely versatile tool which can be used anywhere, even in saltwater. In such a short blog, I really do not have enough room to explain the dual band sonar, sensitivity, fish icon, alarms, units, history, night fishing option, or any of the many other components which make up the Deeper experience, but take my word for it, it’s worth the money! So far, I have found it to be exceptionally accurate when determining depth and bottom features (hours of marker work was not wasted!) and also precise when finding fish. I have found a couple of limitations, the main constraint being the range at which it can be used... I got mine to work at distances up to around Superbly located for Holidays & Short Stays Quality furnished log cabins, sleep up to 6. WiFI Friendly. Seven well-stocked fishing lakes on 40 acres in the beautiful Lincolnshire Countryside. 30 acres of woodland - 10 acre wildflower meadow Carp to 15lb - F1s to 3lb - Tench 8lb - 100lb Match Weights Full tackle and bait shop on site, full licensed bar. Cafe open 7 days a week. Day tickets available at £6 A la carte evening menu

45m, but beyond that, the Bluetooth connection was broken, so for huge expanses of water, it would have to be used from a boat. In choppy water, I also occasionally disturbed Bluetooth, but it was quick to relocate and reconnect, so this was not really an issue. I also noticed a discrepancy in depth readings between ‘basic’ and ‘detailed’ options until the unit had stabilised, but nothing untoward, and it was soon rectified when sonar returns had settled. You also need to be careful to secure the Deeper to the correct screw fixing (there are three) to ensure the correct angle between rod tip and Deeper to maintain connection and provide correct readings, and also check to see that the two halves are tight to maintain watertight integrity; aside from that, it is simplicity itself to use! To end my ‘first thoughts’, I have to say that I’m ‘deeply’ impressed! Every review I’ve read so far has been encouraging, and raved about the performance of Deeper. I’ve already heard of the innovative, and quick to use Deeper being used in emergency situations by firemen to locate a submerged car, so the accuracy and information provided is already being recognised as of high standard... you really should try it! As a postscript, you do however have to buy the Deeper sonar; you cannot upload the ‘app’ alone and point your phone at the water expecting it to miraculously expose the secrets of the murky depths; I have been asked why the ‘app’ doesn’t work by an angler sitting on the bank who uploaded the ‘app’ whilst fishing, but didn’t own a Deeper unit; sometimes technology does confound I suppose....

MILLERS EXIT AT FIRST HURDLE ROTHERHAM UNITED exited the FA Cup at the first hurdle as high-flying Bournemouth maintained their impressive run of late with a convincing victory at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. Despite Richard Brindley giving the Millers the lead, Shaun MacDonald gave the tie parity on the stroke of half time. The third round tie looked to be in the balance until just before the hour mark, but Junior Stanislas’ strike was the prelude to a second-half blitz by the Cherries, who took the clash by the scruff of the net to extend their unbeaten record to 15 games. Following the hectic Christmas schedule, Millers chief Steve Evans was forced to ring the changes for their FA Cup tie as a number of his loan stars went back or were refused permission to play by their parent club. Full-back Brindley was recalled to the Millers’ fold following a productive loan spell with Scunthorpe as Leeds loanee Scott Wootton was not available for selection. Republic of Ireland international Paul Green returned to the Millers’ engine room at the expense of Tom Lawrence, who was recalled by Leicester City, while Ben Pringle was asked to provide the ammunition for strike pairing Jordan Bowery and Jonson ClarkeHarris as Bloomfield Road hero Emmanuel Ledesma returned to the North-East after his loan spell came to an end. The Millers were quick out of the blocks and Brindley was in the thick of the action early on when his incisive ball saw Clarke-Harris advance menacingly into the box but his progress was brought to an abrupt end by Cherries’ skipper Steve Cook, who produced a superb sliding challenge. At the other end, Stanislas embarked on a mazy run which had the Millers backtracking nervously before MacDonald’s cross was snuffed out at the front post. The Millers had a stroke of luck moments later when Brindley was penalised for nudging over Ryan Fraser on the edge of the box and from the resultant freekick, Ian Harte struck a fantastic free-kick which sailed over the defensive wall and with Adam Collin flying across goal, the ball struck the underside of the crossbar before bouncing in and around the goalline, but despite appeals from the visitors’ that the ball had crossed the line, the play continued as the home side cleared the danger.

LATE BRISTOL EQUALISER FORCES REPLAY A late surge from League One leaders Britsol City saw them get an equalising goal to earn a third round replay at Ashton gate. Paul Dickov named the same side that were victorious at the Keepmoat against Coventry City on Boxing Day. Richie Wellens returned from injury to replace Marc De Val, whilst Nathan Tyson also had a spot on the bench after being out injured. Rovers started the game on the front foot and and some lively play saw them put pressure on Steve Cotterill’s side right from the off. Pressing high up the pitch, they disrupted the visitors. The first chance of the game came just five minutes in as James Coppinger played a through ball to Theo Robinson. The striker’s first time shot took a

The moment proved pivotal moments later as the Millers broke the deadlock on ten minutes. Following promptings in and around the visitors’ box, a switch of play gave Brindley an opportunity to advance with purpose to the edge of the box before he drilled a low effort which took a slight deflection which saw the ball arch away from the outstretched hand of Lee Camp as it found the bottom corner of the net. The home side were buoyed by the breakthrough and in their next attack, Bowery won an aerial challenge with Camp to bundle the ball into the net from point-blank range but any joy was tempered by the inevitable free-kick award as he was adjudged to have climbed illegally. Moments later, Pringle’s outswinging free-kick saw skipper Craig Morgan rise highest but he was unable to generate power into the header as it flew harmlessly wide of the target before Clarke-Harris dragged an ambitious effort wide in the Millers’ next foray of note. Just shy of the half-hour mark, the home side had a big let off when Icelandic international Kari Arnason was left exposed by some lazy play on halfway from the Millers and after MacDonald won their tussle with a well-timed tackle, he got up to play a finely weighted throughball which saw Stanislas beat the offside trap to race on goal but despite only having Collin to beat, the ex-West Ham winger fluffed his lines with a screwed effort which missed the target. Moments later, Pringle became the first to see yellow for tugging the shirt of an opponent in full flow before Adam Smith cut inside to drill a low effort from distance which failed to trouble Collin in the next phase of play. Minutes later, Bowery started and finished a move when following a superb sliding challenge on Eunan O’Kane to prompt a Millers’ counter, the ex-Villa forward exchanged passes with Lee Frecklington before firing a snap effort from an acute angle which smashed into the side netting. With half-time approaching, the Cherries turned the tie on its head by firing an equaliser. Following probing by Eddie Howe’s men, Green failed to clear the danger when his errant pass to Frecklington left the home side penned into their own half and the visitors’ exchanged some fluent passing which paved the way for Yann Kermorgant, to play a slide-rule pass which was taken in his stride superbly by MacDonald, who left the home rearguard in his wake before he calmly stroked the ball past the advancing Collin as the ball nestled in the heart of the home goal. Following the restart, fine interplay involving Brindley and Frecklington paved the way for the latter to play a threaded ball which almost saw Clarke-Harris race clear but Camp was alert to snuff out the danger. At the other end, Bournemouth successfully switched play and Smith cut inside with menace and

after working a yard on Pringle, he struck a fierce effort which seemed to swerve in the air but Collin produced a superb one-handed save to keep the scores level. However, Rotherham did not heed the warning as the Cherries took a strangehold on tie by grabbing the lead just shy of the hour mark. There looked little danger until Dan Gosling ran strongly from the heart of midfield and with the home rearguard playing a high line, a timely pass from the ex-Everton midfielder saw Stanislas successfully beat the offside trap and this time he kept his nerve to round Collin before playing the ball into the unguarded net. Evans looked to breathe life into the Millers’ chances when he produced a double substitution but Bournemouth effectively killed off the tie moments later with Kermorgant the architect with a clever run and pass which again caught the Millers’ square and Fraser got on the wrong side of his marker before keeping his nerve to win the battle of wills with Collin to calmly stroke the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Kermorgant was the Millers’ tormentor-in-chief and following a dipping effort which sailed narrowly wide of the target, he added a fourth to add to the home side’s woes. Following a switch of play to the right flank, Stanislas played a first-time cross which was played behind the home rearguard and the French striker managed to control the ball despite being off-balance, but with Collin wrong-footed, he calmly tapped the ball into the empty net. The afternoon went from bad to worse for the Millers, when following a free-kick award which saw Frecklington booked for a heavy challenge on Fraser, Harte swung a tantalising centre which saw Cook rise highest to plant a header which was saved superbly by Collin at point-blank range, but to his anguish, the ball fell invitingly for Kermorgant, who had the simple task of tapping home from just yards out. Home frustration was summed up when Reece James was cautioned for a lunge at Smith before the Manchester United loanee squandered a gilt-edged opportunity to notch a late consolation when he blazed over the bar with the goal gaping after the visitors’ failed to clear decisively. The Millers were battling vainly to the end and sub Matt Derbyshire wasted two opportunities to give the score a more flattering look when he blasted over with the goal at his mercy following Brindley’s incisive cross, before dragging an effort wide with the last kick of the match after being played in by Bowery.

deflection and Dean Furman’s header on the rebound went just over Frank Fielding’s crossbar. Harry Forrester picked up where he left off on Boxing Day and continued to cause problems down the left flank. His inch perfect pass put Furman through one on one with Fielding but the Bristol keeper was quick off his line to make a brave save and deny Rovers the opener. Todd Kane showed his pace as he broke through the defence. Seeing the Rovers keeper off his line he tried a long range shot but Johnstone recovered well to make a good save. The best chance of the half came 30 minutes in as a sliced Forrester shot fell Andy Butler at the far post. The angle was against the defender as he headed the ball across the face of goal, but no Rovers player was able to get on the end of it. There was controversy shortly before half time as a Rovers penalty appeal was turned down. Forrester in the thick of the action again, released a shot from the edge of the area. It appeared to strike the arm of Luke Ayling but referee Mr. S.Duncan waved play on. Despite Rovers being on top, the teams went in level at the break. It took just five minutes after coming back out for

Rovers to break the deadlock and take the lead through Luke McCullough. A Forrester corner fell to McCullough in the six yard box and the Northern Ireland International hooked his shot into the top corner. The visitors best chance of the game came through Jay Emmanuel-Thomas as he found himself one on one with Johnstone after a slip from McCullough, but the Manchester United loanee saved brilliantly with his legs. Bristol upped their game and enjoyed a better spell of possession. On 75 minutes Matt Smith rose above his marker to head home a cross from Luke Ayling. Substitute Kyle Bennett went close for the home side as he drilled one towards the bottom corner which had Fielding scrambling. Bennett had a golden chance to win the game for Rovers and send them through to the fourth round in stoppage time. Good work from Coppinger saw the ball fall to Bennett who fired over the bar from six yards. Both teams go into the hat for the fourth round, but a replay at Ashton Gate will decide the winner.

BLADES NEWS2014/15 MORE CUP HEROICS FOR THE BLADES Nigel Clough’s Blades kicked off 2015 with yet another memorable FA Cup victory. This time it was Harry Redknapp’s Queens Park Rangers who felt the force of the Blades. Marc McNulty gave the Blades a deserved lead and Jamal CampbellRyce scored twice in the second half to continue the growing reputation as cup specialists. Clough made five changes in total, many of which were enforced, allowing Kennedy, Reed, Flynn, Baxter and McNulty to all start, and the Blades more than matched the Premiership side in the opening 30 minutes, creating as many, if not more opportunities. Referee Clattenburg was unmoved as Hoilett tipped over in the box early on and the first Blades chance saw Baxter pick out McNulty, who slipped at the vital moment. Howard turned over a shot from Fer on the turn following a corner and then the Blades goalkeeper also was ideally placed to save

from Mutch after he robbed Scougall. A couple of CampbellRyce crosses put QPR under pressure, including one on 24 minutes from a Harris tackle and pass but McNulty was crowded out at the near post. From a Phillips freekick, a Traore shot was blocked before United clearly got on top. Baxter cut inside and shot at McCarthy and McNulty took the attentions of around four home defenders before, moments later, the Scot gave the Blades the lead. United’s midfield runners were causing QPR problems and it was a main reason for the opening goal on 36 minutes. Predominately it was Scougall but on this occasion it was Reed, whose pass beat Ferdinand and it was ideal for McNULTY to slide the ball through McCarthy and into the net. For the remainder of the half United coolly kept the Premiership side at bay and the only other chance of note was from the Blades but

Scougall could not get enough connection on a Campbell-Ryce cross. At the start of the second half QPR introduced Zamora and the first opportunity after the interval resulted in another goal...for the Blades. An unnecessary corner saw Reed deliver, McCarthy flap, the ball hit Mutch, possibly on the hand, but CAMPBELL-RYCE did not wait for the referee and slotted home from close range - right in front of the travelling contingent. Predictably, QPR hit back with a number of chances. Zamora’s flicked header was wide, Fer’s free-kick was blocked and Austin’s shot was comfortable for Howard, who made a tremendous reaction save with his foot from Onuoha’s header. On the hour QPR used up their substitutes and changed formation. They continued to dominate but the Blades continued to repel. Howard pushed out from Vargas, Isla’s effort was blocked and Phillips, once a Blades

loanee, fired over on 73 minutes. McNulty and Reed picked up tactical yellow cards and United’s first change arrived on 82 minutes when Murphy took over from the tiring McNulty. Late on Phillips was again off target and Baxter tried his luck before being replaced by Wallace. In four minutes of added time, Higdon replaced Doyle but United comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to secure another topflight scalp and a fourth round place...until 15 seconds remaining when CAMPBELLRYCE capitalised on a defensive error and picked his moment before slotting home. QPR: McCarthy, Traore, Caulker (Isla 60), Ferdinand, Phillips, Austin, Fer, Onuoha, Mutch, Henry (Vargas 60), Hoilett (Zamora 45). Unused: Murphy, Hill, Furlong, Grego-Cox. Blades: Howard, Harris, Flynn, Doyle (Higdon 90), Scougall, Baxter (Wallace 90), McNulty (Murphy 82), McEveley, Campbell-Ryce, Reed, Kennedy. Unused: Alcock, McGahey, Turner, Dimaio.

BLADES TO VISIT DEEPDALE IN THE CUP

Monday evening’s FA Cup fourth round draw paired the Blades with Preston North End. The game will be played over the weekend of 24th/25th January 2015 at Deepdale. The Blades beat Premiership Queens Park Rangers in Sunday’s third round tie, thanks to a Marc McNulty

opener and two second half goals from Jamal Campbell-Ryce. Earlier in the competition, Nigel Clough’s Blades disposed of Plymouth Argyle and Crewe Alexandra. The Blades play Preston North End at Bramall Lane on Saturday in Sky Bet League One.

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

OWLS NEWS2014/15 BATTLING OWLS LOSE OUT IN CUP AT THE ETIHAD Sheffield Wednesday exorcised the ghost of the Etihad but exited the FA Cup third round at Manchester City on Sunday. Having suffered heavily at the hands of City in the Capital One Cup earlier in the season, pride was at stake for Wednesday. And they certainly restored that, taking a first half lead through Atdhe Nuhiu before James Milner levelled and the same player notched a last-minute winner to see the Premier League champions through. There were certainly no signs of a September hangover as Wednesday moved the ball confidently in the early stages, with Claude Dielna embarking on a mazy run down the left flank blocked at the last. And on 14 minutes, the Owls deservedly went into the lead. Liam Palmer sent Stevie May scampering down the right and the Scot’s precision pass was neatly dispatched by the onrushing Nuhiu. City hit back with a Fernando Reges header that sailed over the bar

before Frank Lampard hit just wide having fashioned an opening on the edge of the penalty area. As the remainder of the first half unfolded, it was the home side asking more of the questions but Wednesday looked solid and organised to keep City at bay. It was the Owls who actually went closest before the break on the counter when Jacques Maghoma found his way into the box only to see his firm shot thwarted by Eliaquim Mangala. Wednesday started the second period as they did the first and had a half shout for a penalty when Kieran Lee tumbled under a challenge from Dedryck Boyata but the referee waved away the

visitors’ appeals. City responded with an extended spell of possession and a double substitution, with David Silva and Samir Nasri entering the fray on the hour. And the move did the trick as the hosts upped their game in the final third and drew level on 66 minutes. Both substitutes played a part in a smart and swift three-man move that ended with Milner firing across Chris Kirkland and in. The goal gave the Owls a jolt and they grew more into proceedings, but the danger was City showing their top-flight credentials with the clock counting down. And they did exactly that on 90 minutes after Kirkland had saved well from Silva as Milner found a pocket of space in the area to nudged home and break Wednesday hearts.

PROUD IN DEFEAT

Stuart Gray stressed the pride in the dressing room after the Owls suffered a lastgasp FA Cup defeat to Manchester City at The Etihad Stadium. A James Milner double overturned Atdhe Nuhiu’s opener to ensure the Premier League champions went through to round four – but only after a real scare. Gray said: “We have pushed them all the way and I am so proud of the players, who can be proud of themselves. “We came here last time and lost 7-0 and learned lessons from that. I said before the game there was no fear of the unknown and that is what we saw. “We had a game plan,

we got our noses in front and the players responded so well. “They played their hearts out, battled for every ball and I think it’s only tired minds at the end that’s cost us.” Gray went on to outline the quality of the hosts’ bench that helped City’s passage to the next stage. The home side introduced key duo David Silva and Samir

Nasri on the hour and both played their part in victory. He added: “There’s a saying in football that it’s not about the team that starts, it’s the one that finishes. “We saw that today with the quality of the Manchester City bench. They brought on Silva and Nasri and I think that showed how much respect they had for Sheffield Wednesday.”

FANS HAVE BIG PART TO PLAY

Glenn Loovens has thanked Owls the fans for their incredible support at The Etihad on Sunday in the FA Cup and throughout the campaign. The skipper paid special tribute to Wednesdayites after the cup-tie with City and handed his shirt to a lucky supporter behind the goal. And Loovens says the fans will play a key role during the rest of the season. He said: “They have been brilliant this season and against Manchester City, they were outstanding again.

“This is the way it has been all season and they are so important for us. “I threw my shirt into the crowd after the game and I only wish we could have held on to the draw for them.” Despite the narrow defeat, Loovens believes the Owls can take plenty of positives into the league campaign with a big clash against Nottingham Forest coming up on Saturday. He added: “We lost it in injury time, we were so close to getting something out of the game and I think it says it all that the

boys are disappointed coming away from the champions. “They had to push to their limits and there were a lot of positives for us and we can take this into the next game. “We want to be in this league playing against these teams so we have to enjoy the occasion, learn from it and dig out the positives. “The next game is a big one for us, we’re six points outside the playoffs and the league is wide open for us to have a good go.”
