WIN TICKETS TO SEE THE STRANGLERS LIVE AT THE O2 ACADEMY
Following 2014’s spectacular, sell out Ruby Anniversary Tour and accompanying celebratory box set album release, Giants & Gems, the Stranglers march ever onward with a 2015 UK tour, stopping at the O2 Academy in Sheffield on Saturday March 7th. As 2014 drew to a close, punk-era iconoclasts, The Stranglers looked back at what must be one of their most successful years ever. Last year the band celebrated their 40th anniversary with the spectacular Ruby Tour. Fans, old and new, flocked to venues throughout the land to hear a thrilling programme of music, spanning five decades, performed by one of the finest live groups in the country. For The Stranglers it was a record-breaking UK tour with sell-out shows at venue after venue as music fans voted with their feet. The press accolades came flooding in too, the groups’ considerable contribution and importance to the British music scene receiving well-deserved recognition in the specialist music magazines and national newspapers alike. As the long hot summer followed, the group found themselves gracing the main stages at many of the UK and Europe’s premier festivals, including V Festival, T-in-the-Park and and Electric Picnic. One of the punk era’s most eclectic and non compromising bands,The Stranglers have always
drawn upon a wide range of musical genres; from pop to prog, metal to jazz, creating their own distinctive style. Each band member’s considerable, often downright virtuosic, musical talent has allowed them to explore and expand their sonic palette, leading to some of the most memorable pop and rock tunes of the last five decades; from the strident opening bass solo of No More Heroes to the lilting harpsichord strains of Golden Brown. It is little wonder, then, that the band were invited to perform with the London Sinfonietta at the 2013 BBC Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Without doubt one of the most exciting, credible and influential British bands today, The Stranglers will be one of the highlights on the 2015 live circuit – an essential show not to be missed as they perform songs from their much-loved repertoire at venues throughout the country next March. My girlfriend said last night “You treat our relationship like some kind of game!” Which unfortunately cost her 12 points and a bonus chance. I just met a man called William Hill. What are the odds? After a few pints down at the local, talk got round to who had the most expensive watch. I showed mine first. “That’s a Rolex Oyster, worth two and a half grand,” I grinned. My mate John smiled and proudly pointed to his wrist. “This is a white gold Patek Phillipe. I paid the best part of twenty grand for it.” Dave rolled up his sleeve to show his watch. “What do you think of that then? It cost me £200,000.” Me and John stared a while then I said, “Dave, Thats a Casio.” “I know,” he sighed. “My ex-wife bought it for me then found it in her sister’s bed.” An elderly couple had dinner at another couple’s house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen. The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, ‘Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly.’ The other man said, ‘What is the name of the restaurant?’ The first man thought and thought and finally said, ‘What’s the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know, the one that’s red and has thorns.’ ‘Do you mean a rose?’ ‘Yes, that’s the one,’ replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, ‘Rose, what’s the name of that restaurant we went to last night?’

Leaders at Sheffield City Council are to hold another round of ‘Question Time’ style sessions during 2015, to discuss issues that matter to residents in their area. ‘Cabinet in the Community’ will be taking place in neighbourhoods across the city over the next few months, hosted by the city’s new Local Area Partnerships. Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council said: “This is now the fourth year we have run this programme and by taking the Cabinet out into the community more people have the opportunity to come and ask questions and get involved in the debate about how our Council is run. It is vital that we get out there and listen to your views so that we can shape the future of Sheffield together. Cabinet in the Community is a great way of focussing on key issues in specific areas. “I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to take part in some really important debates in each area. I hope as many people as possible will use the sessions as a way of engaging in democracy at a local level.” Cabinet in the Community sessions will focus on a specific local topic or priority which will be discussed and then followed by a general questions and answers session.

20 MPH SPEED LIMIT AREAS Eleven new 20 mph areas are set to be introduced to improve safety around schools and residential areas in Sheffield. The first seven areas were introduced during the financial years 2013/14 and a further seven areas are being implemented in 2014/15. Prior to the adoption of the Sheffield 20mph Speed Limit Strategy, a further 24 large and 10 small traffic-calmed 20mph zones were established, the smaller ones generally resulting from planning conditions placed on new housing developments. It is currently anticipated that a similar number of sign-only 20mph speed limits will have been implemented by the end of the 2015/16 financial year. Taken together this represents about a third of the residential streets in the city. A Cabinet Member decision due to be confirmed tomorrow (8 January), will confirm that the following eleven areas should have a 20 mph limit introduced in 2015/16, subject to sufficient capital funding being available: Gleadless Valley; Stannington; Park Academy; Woodhouse; Greystones and Whirlow; Firth Park; Hillsborough; Wincobank; Meadowhead, Greenhill and Beauchief; Sharrow Vale; and Hurlfield Should there be insufficient capital funding to build all eleven schemes this year, the remaining schemes will be carried forward to be built in the 2016/17 year. The 20 mph speed limits are being introduced in appropriate residential areas rather than along individual roads. Classified roads, major bus routes and roads with an existing speed limit of 40 mph or more would generally not be subject to the new limit. Pupils from the schools have received road safety lessons and have been involved in designing banners to remind motorists to take extra care when driving in the 20 mph areas. A publicity campaign to raise awareness amongst local residents and motorists who drive through the 20 mph areas has been launched by the Council. Before a 20mph scheme is implemented all households within the prospective area will receive a consultation leaflet about the sign-only 20 mph speed limits, with residents invited to comment on or object to the introduction of a 20 mph Speed Limit Order.

escape to freedom as their beloved Austria becomes part of the Third Reich at the start of WWII. The unforgettable score features some of the most memorable songs ever performed on stage, including ‘Edelweiss’, ‘My Favorite Things’, ‘Do-Re-Mi’, ‘Climb Ev’ry Mountain’, and of course, the title song - ‘The Sound of Music’. This new production of the classic stage musical coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the film version - the best loved and most successful movie musical in
history. Playing the iconic role of Maria von Trapp is Danielle Hope, who captured the hearts of the country when she won BBC Television’s Over the Rainbow and made her professional debut as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz at the London Palladium. Danielle has since played Eponine in Les Misérables in London’s West End and Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Robin Hood & Babes in the Wood
Penistone Theatre Group are back by popular demand with their annual Pantomime. Over the years this community group has built up a massive following producing Pantomimes which rival anything put on at the big City Theatres. A great night for all the family. This year they perform their own version of Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood. When King Richard goes off to fight the evil Saracens he makes the misguided decision to leave his two children with his brother, the Sheriff of Nottingham, for safekeeping. The Sheriff enlists the help of his old nanny Nurse Phillipa Bedpan to look after them at the Castle. When the he realises he will inherit his brother’s fortune should the Babes die, he hatches an evil plan to get rid of them. He tricks two simpletons, Cod & Piece to do the deed. They take the Babes deep into heart of the forest where they leave them to die. The outlaw Robin Hood hears of this wrong-doing and with the help of Maid Marian and his band of Merry Men (Friar Tuck, Little John, and Will Scarlett) he thwarts the plan and takes the children into hiding. Needless to say, the Sheriff is not a happy man. Oh No He Isn’t! In an attempt to lure Robin out of hiding the Sheriff organises an archery contest, the prize for which is Maid Marian’s hand in marriage. Will the Sheriff of Nottingham do away with the Sherwood do-gooders, marry Maid Marian for himself and commit the townsfolk to a life of tyranny and extortion? It has all the usual ingredients and a few more. Don’t miss this great show. Many performances sell out so book early.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker
What a week! It’s been a bit of a whirlwind in truth, but an awful lot of things all fell into place all at once... You may recall that I recently left my position as social media administrator for a bait company, and it left me in a bit of a quandary with what to do next. I’d already accepted an offer to join Vardis Tackle, an established company making great strides in the specimen terminal tackle market which was a fantastic (and much appreciated!) opportunity to help promote quality products, but I still felt I might like to do more. A few messages were passed between contacts, which resulted in an exchange with Kev Knight at one of the biggest and best bait companies, Mainline Baits, which thankfully developed into a chance to assist with their exposure (as if it’s needed!) via my usual media outlets. Then, to make a great week even better, I was invited to the UK headquarters of Sonik Sports to see if I had anything to offer! The meeting was a success, and I’ve been allowed to use and endorse Sonik products too! Wow! 2015 promises to be an awesome year for me, and one I’m very much looking forward too! Unfortunately, it means that you will have to put up with plenty of my blatant product plugs from three of the UK’s best companies...and it starts now! I have to admit, that part of the reason I enjoy what I do is that I often get a sneak preview of forthcoming products. At Sonik, I was invited to consider the brand new Gravity-X range of carp rods which will, I’m sure, take the carp market by storm and provide viable competition within the rod sector. You may have already seen the advertisements featuring a futuristic panther under the banner ‘The new King of the jungle’? Take it seriously; these rods are ringed to achieve casting distances which may well be untouchable by other products, have an awesome amount of power throughout, look fantastic and have a super slim blank which oozes quality. An awful lot of work has gone into providing new technology and processes which make these Nanoalloy ( I told you it was new!) blanks something special. Lightweight titanium rings and plenty of other great features mean these are certainly a rod to look out for! www. soniksports.com I’ve had the chance to look at Vardis products for a few weeks now, and I have to admit to being pleasantly surprised with everything I’ve used so far. I realise that there are dozens of different terminal ranges to choose from, but Vardis offer a ‘wrap around’ catalogue of products which complement each other perfectly, and will work with many other manufacturers products without having to buy something specific to make it work properly. I think such flexibility is important when anglers are keeping a watchful eye on their hard earned cash, and the Vardis range definitely helps keep costs down. I’m also a huge fan of the pre-tied

end rigs and leader set ups which greatly benefit those anglers who may be relatively new to carp fishing and want complete confidence in their rigs whilst they learn to tie their own, or those who may suffer from arthritis or similar and want the convenience of using quality products without any hassle. I still haven’t used everything in the catalogue yet, there just seems to be so much to choose from, but it’s all excellent! www.vardistackle.co.uk I’ve just taken my first delivery of Mainline baits. I chose to go with the faithful Cell at first, my writings for various national magazines have often featured Cell in other anglers captures, and I know just how much of this super successful bait gets sold, so why not start with a winner? I’ve also selected a number of pop ups, wafters, dumbbell hookbaits, stick mixes and additives to play with, so I’m really looking forward to hitting the bank again next week. At the moment, my bait room is packed with pink, orange, yellow and other colours dotted about the shelves in variously sized pots of carp targets, and I have to admit I’m akin to a child in a sweet shop, but I just can’t wait to get started! The range of products at Mainline is simply massive, and it will take me ages to find which my favourites are, but there is something for all situations, and something for every angler! www. mainline-baits.com

by Michael Clarke It has been a busy week in the County Senior League, with the normal league and S&HCFA cup programme on Saturday plus the U21 Cup Final.
U21 Cup Final We must start this week with the U21 Cup Final between holders Swallownest Miners Welfare U21 and Athersley Recreation U21. Swallownest went into the break 2-1 up thanks to goals from Jack Denton and Alex Nightingale. However, Athersley turned the tie on its head in the second-half winning 3-2, with two goals from Joe Oliver and one from Kieran Taylor to give them their first silverware. Premier Division Swallownest Miners Welfare are the new leaders of the Premier Division, after they beat Joker FC 5-0 at home. Goals from Tom Crosby, Alex Nightingale, Jamie Hopkins (2) and Andy Jones took them to the summit of the stable for this first time this term. Swallownest have also not conceded a goal for three games in league competition. Oughtibridge WMFC claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Jubilee Sports at Chaucer School. The win takes Oughtibridge into second place, joint with leaders Swallownest on points but they have a worse goal difference. Prior to Saturday’s games it was Swinton Athletic versus Houghton Main was first versus second in the Premier Division. The two could not be split though as the game ended 1-1, and just to show you how close it is at the top they are now in third and fourth place respectively. Only two points separate the top four teams. Handsworth Parramore ended a run of six league games without a win, with a 3-1 home victory over Athersley Recreation Reserves. The win takes Handsworth up to fifth in the table, only five points off the pace. Scott Hartley scored a hat-trick for Millmoor Juniors, but it was not to be enough as they were held to a 4-4 draw at home against Wickersley. It is the second consecutive game in which Millmoor have scored four, as they beat Jubilee Sports -3 on the previous matchday. Frecheville were 1-0 winners over fellow strugglers Wombwell Main at Wombwell Main Cricket Club. Joe Highfield scored the vital goal for Frecheville, which takes them out of the relegation zone. Division One Davy stretched their unbeaten league run to four games, as goals from Florent Fadiga and Lewis Warrell gave them an important 2-1 home win over

Goals from Andy Hanson, Liam Johnson and Mike Parkinson gave Rotherham Town a 3-2 win over third placed Thorpe Hesley at Rockingham Community Centre. The win takes Rotherham into fourth place, only two points behind Thorpe Hesley. AFC Dronfield extended Ecclesfield Rex Rose’s winless run to three games, when they beat them 4-2 at Gosforth Playing Fields. Prior to that run Ecclesfield had a 100% league record. Division Two Leaders Byron House were defeated for the third time this season, as they were downed 3-1 at home by Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves. It is now back-to-back losses for Byron House, but they still have a healthy lead of 11 points from second placed Denaby Main who have four games in hand. Ross Duggan scored five goals for Frecheville as they beat Maltby Main Reserves 9-2 at home. Duggan has now scored 11 goals in three games. Frecheville have only lost once in the league in eight matches, stretching back to late-September. Bawtry Town claimed their first league win of the season, with a 3-1 victory over fellow strugglers Sheffield Lane Top. Bawtry remain bottom, but are only one point behind Kiveton Park and two behind Sheffield Lane Top. U21 Division Houghton Main U21 extended their lead at the top of the U21 Division to three points, following a 4-1 home win over Denaby United U21. Wombwell Main U21 ended a run of five league games without a win, with a narrow 1-0 victory over Bawtry Town U21 at the Keepmoat Stadium. Goals from Lebrun Mbeka, Cory Cresswell and Mused Salem gave Millmoor Juniors U21 a hardfought 3-2 win over AFC Dronfield U21. Millmoor remain in fourth place. S&HCFA Association Cup 3rd Round Two goals from Jack Portman inspired Kingstone United to a 4-3 away win over Penistone Church Reserves in the all Division One tie in the Association Cup. Kingstone will host Emley FC (Development squad) in the Quarter-Finals. S&HCFA Junior Cup Quarter-Finals Handsworth Parramore booked their place in the Semi-Finals of the Junior Cup with a 3-1 away win over MLB Academy. Swallownest Miners Welfare U21’s week did not get any better after their U21 Cup Final defeat to Athersley, as they were dumped-out of the Junior Cup losing 7-0 to Sheffield Medics.

PROMOTION CHASING BEES STING THE MILLERS ROTHERHAM UNITED suffered their first defeat in seven games as they were edged out by play-off chasing Brentford. Despite a strong start by the Millers’, Steve Evans’ men were undone by Stuart Dallas’ well-taken strike just before the hour. Paul Green came closest to levelling matters late on with a point-blank header which was well-saved by home ‘keeper David Button. Following their FA Cup exit at the hands of Bournemouth last weekend, the Millers’ made five changes to his starting line-up for the trip to London. There were Rotherham debuts for Leicester loanee Jack Barmby and Huddersfield pair Adam Hammill and Danny Ward, who put pen to paper on temporary deals during the week while Leeds right-back Scott Wootton returned to the fray at the expense of last week’s scorer Richard Brindley. Matt Derbyshire was entrusted with leading the line for the Millers’ as Jonson Clarke-Harris and Jordan Bowery had to be content with places on the bench. The visitors’ had the first sight of goal when fine interplay involving Green and Derbyshire paved the way for Barmby to try his luck from distance but the ball fizzed harmlessly wide of the target. Moments later, Ward had a speculative effort deflected over following Hammill’s pass before Barmby almost had a moment to forget when Jota’s inswinging corner saw the ex-Manchester United winger take a wild swipe in attempting to clear the ball but he failed to make contact as it whistled through the danger area. At the other end, Derbyshire curled an effort over from the edge of the box before the ex-Forest striker advanced menacingly towards goal after being played in by Smallwood’s delicate chip over the rearguard but as he looked to strike, James Tarkowski made a superb last-ditch tackle to block his progress. The Millers’ were looking the most likely and Hammill had home hearts’ fluttering with a dipping
COPPINGER’S LAST GASP STRIKE RESCUES A POINT Paul Dickov’s side were looking to start the New Year with a positive result, continuing the form shown over the festive period in their first league fixture of the year away to Oldham Athletic. The visitors had a good spell of possession early on but it was the host’s first corner on 6 minutes that created a chance for former Rover Forte to head over the bar from a deep position. Five minutes later and Rovers created their fist chance of the game Stevens running into the box pulled the ball back to Bennett who drags his snapshot wide of Rachunka’s goal. Shortly followed by a long-range effort by Wellens on 13 minutes, the windy conditions helped his shot dip and rattle the top of the Latics crossbar. The Latics broke the deadlock on 23 minutes, Butler lost possession out of position allowing Forte to set up IBEHRE in the area who smashed the ball past Sam Johnstone to give the hosts the lead. Rovers responded instantly with a long-range effort from Robinson that didn’t trouble Rachubka, who collected easily. It was just after the half hour mark that Rovers looked most likely to equalise, from a throw in Forrester catches the ball in the sweet spot, his powerful effort flies just wide of the Latics near post.
effort from distance which whistled past the post before Barmby’s ambitious effort failed to trouble Button moments later. However, the visitors’ had a lucky escape when Moses Odubajo got the better of Reece James to clip an inviting ball to the far post which saw Dallas’ goalbound header strike Jonathan Douglas en-route to goal but fortunately for the Millers’, the ball bobbled narrowly wide of the target. The home side were finding their rhythm and onetime Millers’ loanee Toumani Diagouraga played a threaded ball into Andre Gray, whose smart lay-off saw Jota strike goalwards but Icelandic international Kari Arnason was well-stationed to block his effort before Dallas’ fired a fierce effort which curled away from goal following clever set-up work by Gray and Alex Pritchard. Just shy of the half-hour mark, Rotherham missed a gilt-edged chance to break the deadlock when Barmby cleverly feigned a pass before superbly giving the on-rushing Richie Smallwood an opportunity to strike but he fluffed his lines with a tame effort which was comfortably gathered by Button. At the other end, the Millers’ were grateful for an offside flag after Jota’s perfectly weighed pass saw Gray fire a snap effort into the bottom corner of the goal but any joy was tempered by the assistant referee. Moments later, Pritchard showed fleet of foot to jink past the attentions of Green but despite spotting Adam Collin slightly off his line, his delicate chip from the edge of the box flew narrowly over the bar before Douglas’ had a goalbound shot blocked by a retreating defender after fine approach play from the home side. With half-time approaching, Smallwood became the first to see yellow for a desperate lunge at Pritchard, who had raced into a gaping hole in the Rotherham defence and the Tottenham loanee almost made the Millers’ pay from the resultant free-kick with a superb curling effort which fizzed past the upright with Collin purely a spectator. Following the restart, the Bees’ had faint appeals for a spot kick when Douglas’ was ushered away from the ball from skipper Craig Morgan as he looked to strike but referee Paul Tierney waved away home protests. However, just shy of the hour mark, Brentford made the decisive breakthrough when Jake Bidwell’s flighted cross was met by the volley of Jota and
although the Spaniard was crowded out on the edge of the box, Dallas pounced on the loose ball before executing a well-struck effort on the half turn which beat the outstretched hand of Collin before finding the corner of the net. The goal sprang Rotherham into life and Derbyshire beat the attentions of his marker to fire an effort which had Button at full stretch before Hammill was the next to test the home ‘keeper with a left-footed effort from the edge of the box which was saved at the second attempt. However, the home side missed an opportunity to double their advantage when Button’s clearance fell invitingly for Gray, who shrugged off the presence of Arnason before bearing down on goal but Collin stood up tall to block his goalbound effort and with Rotherham struggling to clear their heads, Jota blazed over with the goal at his mercy. Moments later, Dallas’ snap shot stung the palms of Collin before Douglas looked to bulldoze his way through the rearguard but the visitors’ snuffed out the danger. At the other end, Derbyshire’s rasping effort fizzed over the bar before the Millers’ had Wootton to thank for keeping them in the game as his last-ditch clearance prevented Douglas from tapping into an empty net following Gray’s pullback. The Millers’ were living on the edge as Pritchard made something out of nothing to punch an effort from just outside the box which smashed against the upright. With time running out, sub Conor Newton screwed a snap shot harmlessly wide of the target before Hammill’s mazy run on the edge of the box had the home side backtracking nervously but he was crowded out by sheer weight of numbers. The visitors’ then came within a whisker of the equaliser when Wootton’s superb delivery from the right flank saw Green rise highest to power a pointblank header which was arrowing towards the roof of the net but Button produced a superb acrobatic save to preserve the home side’s slender lead. In the dying minutes, sub Frazer Richardson was handily placed to hack Douglas’s fierce drive from his own line before Hammill had Rotherham’s last opportunity to level matters with a cross-cum-shot which failed to trouble the home goal.
Neither side created any more clear cut chances as the break approached, an Oldham free kick rebounded off the wall into the path of Wilson, his shot had Johnstone scrambling but went past the base of Rovers post. The weather conditions deteriorated leading up to half time allowing for Wabara to bend a cross come shot that had Rachunka worried in the air until it went just over the bar. A slow start to the half allowed for both sides to assess any tactical changes that were made at half time until the 53minute. Oldham doubled their advantage a corner was met by ELOKOBI who headed downward, Johnstone looked to save the ball on the line and parried the ball into mixer, the linesman raised his flag to signal the ball had crossed the line and the goal was given. A corner just after the hour mark caused confusion in the Rovers penalty box with the ball falling to Elokobi that unexpectedly rebounded off his legs into the six yard area, Tyson was in a good position to get a good clearance. The Latics confidence seemed to constantly build, some nice play on 70 minutes allowed a ball to be played across the 18 yard area, Winchester had a little time to try and bend a shot inside the post. Johnstone could only watch the ball drift past his upright. The second half burst into life on 74 minutes, Mills went into a challenge with Wabara, the former Rovers man appeared to have two feet off the ground and after consulting his assistants the referee showed the Latics defender the red card. Rover looked to capitalise on the man advantage, on 77 minutes a long ball looked to be collected by
Rachubka but under pressure from Tyson drops the ball and TYSON scrambled the ball into the back of the net whilst on the floor. Late into the game and some nice play on the right hand side of the Rovers midfield allowed the ball to be played square to the on running Keegan, he hit it first time but straight at Rachubka. Into five minutes stoppage time Rovers mounted an attack down the right hand side, the ball found COPPINGER just inside the 18 yard area who turned and hit a low shot to equalise two minutes into added time. The referee blew the full time whistle shortly after ending a dramatic second half that saw Rovers earn a deserved point at the death to take back to Yorkshire.

BLADES NEWS2014/15 BLADES SEE OFF PRESTON AT THE LANE The Blades kicked off the 2015 league campaign with a hardearned but deserved win against a fellow promotion contender. Marc McNulty and Jamal Campbell-Ryce - scorers at QPR in the FA Cup six days earlier were again on target. Josh Brownhills netted a late consolation but the Blades held on to record a long overdue home success in Sky Bet League One. Boss Clough made just one change for the first home game at Bramall Lane in 2015. Following the FA Cup win at QPR, Murphy replaced Reed, who dropped to be amongst the substitutes, where he was joined by Adams and Wallace. The opening 20 minutes saw both sides not only trying to come to
terms with each other but also a strong wind which swirled around S2. Neither goalkeeper nor goalmouth was particularly troubled, although Flynn did well to stop Gallagher getting a yard’s advantage and Murphy and Doyle both shot wide from distance. The mid-section of the half followed a similar pattern, although the Blades threatened Preston’s goal more than the other way round. Kennedy would have wanted to do better from Baxter’s free-kick before being flattened by Stuckmann and McNulty’s shot was weak and wide after Scougall’s pass. As half-time approached the Blades forced Preston onto the back foot and pressured Stuckmann. A good
move on 38 minutes saw Doyle and Scougall link up before McNulty’s shot was at the visiting goalkeeper and a moment later Baxter fired just wide after exchanging passes with Scougall. Murphy headed Flynn’s deflected shot wide before, on the stroke of the break, two Gallagher shots kept Howard on his toes, the second of which was deflected wide and from the resulting corner Huntington’s header was hacked clear by Harris. The Blades began the second period well with Harris hitting a 30-yard free-kick at Stuckmann before the advantage was gained on 52 minutes. A corner was only halfcleared before Murphy laid off for Doyle to shoot, the subsequent ricochet dropped for McNULTY to loop an effort over the head of the visiting goalkeeper and into the Kop net. Gallagher arrived late in the box but fired over as Preston looked to hit back, then it was United’s turn to create a number of chances. Following another half-cleared corner, Scougall found space in the box but shot wide with Stuckmann onrushing and, on 61
minutes, Murphy’s dink over the defence found Doyle in space but he clipped wide, again with the visiting goalkeeper springing from his line. United were the dominant side and the second did soon follow, on 70 minutes. It was the result of a 40-yard crossfield run from Murphy, who held his pass to the right moment for CAMPBELLRYCE to drill through Stuckmann’s legs. Preston had a great chance to immediately get back in the game but Buchanan’s shot was blocked by Howard’s legs and Reid fired the rebound wide. On 74 minutes Doyle was the first Blade booked after four Preston players had seen yellow and the Blades held firm in the face of an aerial bombardment from the visitors. Scougall was adjudged to have fouled central defender Huntington following a move involving Baxter and McNulty, whilst Clough made all his changes during a six-minute period, introducing Alcock and the Wallaces. Preston’s last hope came and went with Gallagher’s free-kick, which deflected off the wall and there was a chance for a third for United on 86 minutes when Harris robbed Gallagher but fired across goal and wide. Five minutes of added time were signalled and with their next attack the visitors caused some nervousness. Two minutes in, the Blades conceded a free-kick on the edge of the box and despite Howard getting a hand to BROWNHILL’s shot, the ball found the target. Also in injury-time, with Preston now showing urgency, auxiliary striker Huntington won Reid’s cross but the header was at Howard. The visitors were opting for the long ball but United continued to battle for every ball and the final whistle signalled a deserved win.
GAFFER DELIGHTED WITH DESERVED WIN
Nigel Clough felt his side were good value for Saturday’s deserved success over Preston North End at Bramall Lane. Marc McNulty opened the scoring, with his tenth of the season, before Jamal Campbell-Ryce scored what proved to be a decisive second with 20 minutes remaining, meaning Josh Brownhil’s free-kick for the Lilywhites in stoppage time proved to be nothing more than a consolation. On the much needed three points, which keep United sixth in the table, the Gaffer remarked: “It was a very good performance, we put so much effort and desire into the game, against a very good Preston side.
“Most teams would crumble going 2-0 down at Bramall Lane, but Preston upped their game and pushed us all the way in the end. “We were desperate for three points on the day, having not won recently in the league and the lads reaction to the second goal told you how important they felt it would be and it proved to be the case.” Clough added: “There was nothing in the game in the first 20 minutes or so, but as the first-half progressed we had two or three chances and at half-time we just asked the lads to play with a bit more purpose and intent.

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY
OWLS NEWS2014/15 DOMINANT OWLS SEE OF FOREST Wednesday posted their third consecutive win in the Championship at The City Ground on Saturday. Goals from Kieran Lee and Chris Maguire either side of the interval saw the Owls extend their strong run in the division to five wins from seven. In what was one of Wednesday’s best away performances of the campaign to date, the visitors largely bossed the contest against out of form Forest and were excellent value for the three points. The hosts went into the clash in need of a huge boost after just two wins from 19. But Wednesday on the other were in good form and looking to end a long wait for a travelling triumph at The City Ground, dating back to 2001. The visitors started brightly with Jacques Maghoma at the heart of the action, who created an early opening but was denied at the last by a fine Jamaal Lascelles challenge. Chris Maguire had a good shout for a penalty 12 minutes into the contest when Lascelles appeared to bring down the forward just inside the area.
But Forest were not without their moments as danger man Britt Assombalonga entered Owls territory with menace but was halted by a well-timed Tom Lees lunging challenge. Then came Forest’s best chance from a corner on the half-hour mark but as the ball fell to Robert Tesche just yards from goal, Keiren Westwood was on hand to make a key stop from the powerful drive. But when the breakthrough came, it was for the Owls and right on the stroke of half time. Maguire found Stevie May with a neat feed down the right channel and the Scot did well to swing in a centre for Atdhe Nuhiu to head towards goal and Lee to bundle beneath Dorus De Vries.
And just five minutes after the restart, the situation improved for Wednesday as Stuart Gray’s side found themselves two goals to the good. Claude Dielna whipped in from the left and Maguire took a touch to bring the ball back inside his marker and drill into the bottom corner. With Wednesday well in the box seat, they attacked at will and De Vries was to thank for keeping the deficit down to two, saving from May and then Maguire on the rebound. Forest were struggling to cope with the relentless Owls pressure and Nuhiu came within a whisker of putting the game out of reach with a crisp volley that flew the wrong side of the upright. The Midlanders offered little in return and Wednesday were able to see out the remainder of the clash untroubled to post a convincing victory.
THE DRESSING ROOM IS BUZZING - LEES
Tom Lees walked into a ‘buzzing’ dressing room after the 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. The Owls posted one of their most impressive performances of the season at The City Ground and duly enjoyed the scenes after the game. Lees told swfc.co.uk: “The changing room is buzzing and all the lads are thrilled with the win and the clean sheet. “I said to Glenn after the game that sometimes when we’ve had clean sheets, we’ve been under pressure, but today I felt we were comfortable. “We’re all delighted and rightly so because
that’s our third win in the league in a row and everyone knows we were really unlucky to come away from Manchester City last with nothing in the cup.” Despite that last-gasp heartbreak at the Etihad, Lees outlined the positives the Owls took from Manchester and
into the Midlands: “We put a lot of sheer hard work into the Manchester City game and although we lost, we know we played really well against the Premier League champions. “That confidence played a big part into how well we played against Nottingham Forest and long may it continue.”
WE CAN DO SOMETHING SPECIAL
Owls striker Atdhe Nuhiu says he stands by his original assessment that Wednesday can do something special this season. Ahead of the 2014/15 campaign, the towering striker believed the squad could achieve big things. After the Owls’ fifth win from seven games against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Nuhiu reaffirmed those beliefs and said: “I said right from the start of this season that we can do something special. “I haven’t for one minute
changed my mind. “We know what we can do, we know where we want to be and what we have to do to achieve that.” Wednesday’s strong run in the Championship continued at The City Ground on Saturday as goals from Kieran Lee and Chris Maguire sealed another travelling triumph. Stuart Gray’s side have moved to within four points of the play-offs and Nuhiu said that everyone connected with the club is playing their part.

He added: “Everybody at the club; the players, management and fans, have one target to bring success here and we have to do it together and be like one family. “We are all happy right now and you could see that in our celebrations, with the players and fans together. “We’ve had another good game, good performance and good win. We celebrated as one together and now we have another big game coming up against Bolton at our ground.”
