CAMRA URGES SWIFT ACTION TO STOP PUBS CLOSING CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, is pressing the Government to act now to help save pubs in light of the latest CGA-CAMRA Pub Tracker, which shows that the number of net pub closures in the UK remains high at 29 per week – almost twice the number of pub closures in 2011. These ﬁgures coincide with a new clause to the Infrastructure Bill in England, tabled this week by a cross-party group of MPs, which would mean that planning permission is always required

before demolishing or converting a pub into a supermarket convenience store or other retail use. Tim Page, CAMRA Chief Executive says: “It is currently possible to convert a pub into a betting shop, pay-day loan store or supermarket without the need for planning permission, making it far too easy for pubs valued by the community to be lost without local people having a say. Given the huge contribution that pubs make to community life in Britain we believe this cannot be right.”

“The clause tabled by Charlotte Leslie MP is a fantastic opportunity to get the Government to take swift action to close these planning loopholes. We urge every MP who supports local communities and local pubs to get behind this clause and help secure a better future for the great British pub industry. We hope that we can rally support from sufﬁcient MPs to persuade Ministers to reconsider their current refusal to provide effective planning protection for viable and valued pubs.”

This attempt to amend the Infrastructure Bill is a huge step forward for CAMRA’s Pubs Matter campaign, which calls on the Government to make a simple change to the law in England so that a planning application is required before a pub is demolished or converted into another use. This change would give pubs the same protection that exists for sites such as theatres, scrap yards and nightclubs. It would also give communities the chance to have a say when their local pub is under threat.

The campaign has so far secured the support of nearly 100 MPs for an Early Day Motion on pub demolition and change of use. CAMRA is calling on all MPs to support the clause and make the changes necessary to support local pubs across the country. Charlotte Leslie MP for Bristol North West says: “We urgently need a change to the law to protect pubs like The Bourne End in Brentry in my constituency from being simply demolished, or turned into a supermarket before the community has had the ability to have its say. Of course there will be some pubs that simply are not viable, but we must reset the balance in favour of the community, not the big developers.”

Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield is the latest venue to host the multi award winning InstructAbility programme, which offers disabled people a FREE opportunity to become qualified fitness instructors. There is a selection day on 25th February 2015 and anyone who is interested is encouraged to apply now at www.aspire.org.uk. Once qualified, instructors are placed within gyms to gain work experience and to encourage other disabled people to get active. Over 50% of graduates have been offered paid work following successful work placements. Hilary Farmiloe, InstructAbility National Project Manager says, “The first InstructAbility courses started in London three years ago and they have proved a real success for supporting disabled people into the workforce and in turn making gyms more welcoming for disabled customers. Thanks to Sport England funding we have been able to expand to other regions and I am excited to have our first course in the northern region based in Sheffield.” Richard Apps, General Manager at Ponds Forge, which part of the Sheffield City Trust charity group, says, “We’re really proud to become the first venue in the north of England to offer InstructAbility courses. Kell Brook will defend his IBF World Welterweight title against number one mandatory challenger ‘Jo Jo’ Dan at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield on March 28. Tickets are now on general sale. Brook dives straight into the deep-end following his life-threatening injury when he was attacked whilst on holiday in September as he meets the Canadianbased Romanian Dan, who edged out Kevin Bizier in a final eliminator for ‘The Special One’s’ title in December. “After everything that’s happened over the last six months, it feels incredible knowing I will be defending my World title in Sheffield,” said Brook. “I want to get this mandatory out of the way and then target those mega fights that are out there in the division. TOM ODELL ANNOUNCES FOREST LIVE TOUR DATES

Tom Odell has announced a very special tour of the nation’s forests for 2015. The exceptionally talented artist is the ﬁrst act to announce multiple dates as part of Forestry Commission’s Forest Live which will see him perform in seven spectacular woodland venues across England. Released in June 2013, Tom Odell’s debut album ‘Long Way Down’ shot straight to number one. He heard the news whilst performing on the John Peel Stage at Glastonbury that year. Described by The Telegraph as “utterly compelling”, singles from the album including ‘Can’t Pretend’, ‘Hold Me’ and the gargantuan ‘Another Love’ illustrate a song-writing maturity beyond his years. This has resulted in his achieving the ultimate industry accolade of ‘Songwriter of the Year’ at the 2014 Ivor Novello Awards as well as previously winning the BRITs Critics’ Choice Award for 2013. Following a succession of sold out headline tours and with ‘Long Way Down’ being certiﬁed gold, a packed summer of festival appearances in 2014 included V Festival, Isle of Wight and a show supporting one of his idols Neil Young at Hyde Park. Chosen to perform the soundtrack to this year’s John Lewis Christmas advert, the 24-year-old has added his spine-tingling vocals to a

cover of John Lennon’s classic ‘Real Love’, generating millions of YouTube views. Tom is currently in the studio recording his new album. Forest Live is an independent programme organised by the Forestry Commission to bring forests to new audiences. Income generated from ticket sales is spent on protecting, improving and expanding England’s forests and woodlands and increasing their value to people and wildlife. Over Forest Live’s 14 year history, money raised has contributed to a wide range of projects, from wildlife conservation to making improvements for visitors. CAN YOU HELP WITH RESEARCH INTO DRINKING AND OLDER PEOPLE?

The Big Lottery have awarded £25m to deliver and evaluate a programme “Drink Wise, Age Well” to reduce the negative consequences of alcohol use in people aged 50 and over. The programme will be delivered in five areas in England (Sheffield and Devon), Scotland (Glasgow), Wales (Cwm Taf) and Northern Ireland (Western Trust Area). The Substance Misuse and Ageing Research Team (SMART) at the University of Bedfordshire is leading the evaluation of the programme. As part of the evaluation, three GP practices in Sheffield (and the other areas) will send a questionnaire about alcohol use to their patients aged 50 and over. Sheffield 50+ has been asked to help by providing initial feedback on the questionnaire that will be sent out. Issues to be explored include acceptability, wording, clarity and range of responses provided in the questionnaire. Would you like to help out? The suppliers on this feature have been providing their services for many years and are very experienced in their ﬁeld. them in The Mercury. The Mercury will be holding their Spring Wedding Fayre on Sunday 1st March at The Mercure St Paul’s Hotel, in the centre of Shefﬁeld. The beautiful, 4 star hotel over looks the Peace Gardens and is attached to the Winter Gardens. This provides the perfect backdrop for any wedding day and makes the Mercure St Paul’s Hotel a very popular hotel and wedding venue. The hotel’s interior doesn’t disappoint

either, its contemporary design and state of the art décor create a unique atmosphere that make it the ideal venue to host The Mercury Wedding Fayre. The event will be held in the City Suite, just downstairs from the hotel’s reception, which is a large function room capable of housing over 25 stands and a catwalk. The wedding fayre will exhibit a good selection of bridal wear, menswear, ﬂorists, cakes, jewellery, photography and much more. Fashion shows will take place at 12.00 noon and 2.00 pm. The Mercure itself will display a wedding breakfast, with plenty of staff on hand to answer any questions. Entry is free. Doors open at 11.00am and close at 3.00 pm. All brides will receive a complimentary bag of vouchers etc and one lucky bag will contain a golden ticket, which can be

exchanged for a mystery prize. Bucks Fizz and canapés are also available on arrival, at registration. Cars will be on display outside, at the front of the hotel. Robin Hood & Babes in the Wood

Penistone Theatre Group are back by popular demand with their annual Pantomime. Over the years this community group has built up a massive following producing Pantomimes which rival anything put on at the big City Theatres. A great night for all the family. This year they perform their own version of Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood. When King Richard goes off to fight the evil Saracens he makes the misguided decision to leave his two children with his brother, the Sheriff of Nottingham, for safekeeping. The Sheriff enlists the help of his old nanny Nurse Phillipa Bedpan to look after them at the Castle. When the he realises he will inherit his brother’s fortune should the Babes die, he hatches an evil plan to get rid of them. He tricks two simpletons, Cod & Piece to do the deed. They take the Babes deep into heart of the forest where they leave them to die. The outlaw Robin Hood hears of this wrong-doing and with the help of Maid Marian and his band of Merry Men (Friar Tuck, Little John, and Will Scarlett) he thwarts the plan and takes the children into hiding. Needless to say, the Sheriff is not a happy man. Oh No He Isn’t! In an attempt to lure Robin out of hiding the Sheriff organises an archery contest, the prize for which is Maid Marian’s hand in marriage. Will the Sheriff of Nottingham do away with the Sherwood do-gooders, marry Maid Marian for himself and commit the townsfolk to a life of tyranny and extortion? It has all the usual ingredients and a few more. Don’t miss this great show. Many performances sell out so book early.

A week of crushing disappointment, swiftly followed by a bit of a celebration really.... I set my stall out to go pike fishing this week, so all the necessary preparations were made, flask filled, deadbaits thawed and tackle packed. First thing in the morning, I was off to a nearby lake (the snow made travelling any further a little too risky) which I knew to be ice free and fishing reasonably well. I arrived at 0730, ready to set up for first light, and to my chagrin, I found the gates securely locked! There was no sign to indicate an issue, so I thought I’d wait patiently for a few minutes... After half an hour, and several unanswered calls to the bailiffs phone, I sat fuming in my van before weighing up my options. I’d now been waiting an hour, so was well into ‘rush hour’ and further travel to a likely venue would take almost as long, before setting up added even more wasted minutes, so, in a huff, I went home to sulk! I only get to fish once per week, so I was extremely disappointed that the gates were not open, and showed no signs of it either; fishery owners need customers, and it could be extremely damaging to trade if unreliability becomes a talked about feature of that particular venue, so at least put a sign on the gate! I know that the fishery eventually opened the gates at around 1030... but what’s the point if a full days fishing is planned? Grrr.... On a much more positive note, I’ve been approached by a prominent game developer to provide content and images for the

Premier Division Swinton Athletic had the opportunity to take back top spot in the Premier Division as all but their game away against Wickersley was postponed in the Premier Division on Saturday. They took their chance, as goals from Shaun Turner and Alex Wilkinson gave them a 2-1 win at Wickersley School. Swinton now lead the way with a one point cushion over second placed Houghton Main. Still only four points separate the top ﬁve in a congested title race. Division One Penistone Church Reserves moved into third position in Division One in spectacular fashion, with a 5-0 home win over Ecclesﬁeld Red Rose. Bradley Kemp

DOYLE INJURED AS STEELERS SIGN TWO NEW STARS Its been a couple of very busy days for head coach Gerad Adams and the Steelers staff resulting in two new signings for the club, with both making their debuts against Coventry Blaze later today. Steelers received conﬁrmation on Wednesday that goalie Frank Doyle would be missing for a minimum of three weeks following scans on a hand injury that had been troubling him for a while. This news resulted in Adams moving for Josh Unice a 25 year old goalie from Holland, Ohio (USA). Unice was a 3rd round draft pick for the Chicago Blackhawk’s in 2007 after he represented Team USA at U17, U18 and U20 level at three World Championships. The Steelers new goalie ﬂew into the UK on Friday morning and trained with his new team mates later that day. On Friday the Steelers were made aware of the possibility of signing the highly rated Slovakian forward Tomas Petruska from Graz 99ers (Austria). Petruska was an All Star last season in Denmark after scoring 20 goals and 46 assists for Herning Blue Foxs. Petruska also represented Slovakia at the U18 and U20 levels.

Midfielder Conor Newton has pledged to take any first-team opportunities with both hands after recent substitute cameos at Blackpool and Brentford. The Newcastle-born player has been kicking his heels on the sidelines since making the summer switch from his hometown club but after catching the eye of Millers’ chief Steve Evans following some impressive reserve team outings either side of the New Year, Newton has forced his way into Rotherham’s first-team reckoning. Speaking exclusively to Millers Matchday recently following his 30-minute appearance at Griffin Park, Newton is under no illusions of the importance of taking the opportunity when and where it arises with fierce competition for places within the Millers’ engine room. “It’s always a little frustrating being on the periphery of the first-team but we brought a lot of good players here in the summer,” he conceded. “I wouldn’t be human if it wasn’t my aim to start more games and I want to force my way into the starting 11 and put in the kind of performances to ensure I can stay there.” Newton demonstrated his ability to dictate the tempo of midfield affairs while showing his eye for goal with a superb debut strike during the Millers’ pre-season draw with Falkirk during their Scottish tour. BLADES NEWS2014/15 CUP FORM CONTINUES AS BLADES EARN REPLAY United’s barrage of cup ﬁxtures continued with a replay needed to decide this FA Cup fourth round tie. Less than 24 hours after Kieron Freeman, Paul Coutts and John Brayford signed for the Blades, Nigel Clough’s side played out another close encounter with Preston North End. At Deepdale, Paul Gallagher gave Preston the lead before Diego De Girolamo’s ﬁrst Blades goal secured a draw. Boss Clough made a total of eight changes for today’s all Sky Bet League One tie - Preston made six of their own. Baxter, a scorer at Deepdale

earlier in the season, skippered the team, which included four teenagers and Davies making his first appearance following a foot injury sustained in October. The make-up of the Blades line-up was interesting, starting with three at the back, Davies and Alcock in wing back positions, Dimaio, Reed and Baxter in midfield and Higdon and De Girolamo as the front two. The home side looked the more threatening early on, Gallagher particularly - he started and almost finished a move on eight minutes but the subsequent shot

was deflected wide. The former Blades loanee did, however, open the scoring soon after. Kennedy was adjudged to have fouled Reid 30 yards out and GALLAGHER’s pinpoint free-kick found the bottom corner of Howard’s net. A couple of Davies free-kicks gave United opportunities to get back into the game. His first saw Higdon win the initial header but Basham could not get on the end of it and the second was a shot at goal, but was wide of the near post. During the first half United also reverted to 4-4-2 with Basham moving into midfield which coincided with chances drying up for both sides. Baxter was industrious but neither Stuckmann nor Howard were troubled again before the half-time break. The first chance of the second half was the result of a mistake by De Girolamo, but Howard saved from Reid’s 25-yard shot. It was the start of an eventful ten minutes, in terms of chances. From Basham’s flick,

De Girolamo beat Stuckmann but Woods cleared off the line and then Baxter shot at the home goalkeeper. For Preston, Reid’s mazy run ended with his shot being deflected wide and then Gallagher curled just past the post, whilst Murphy was introduced for the Blades and was quickly denied by Stuckmann. The Blades were applying the majority of pressure and Higdon thought he should have had a penalty following Huntington’s challenge but referee Stroud was unmoved. Higdon also fired over from Murphy’s pass on 65 minutes. Kennedy was the first to be booked and Preston went very close to adding a second when Clarke met Gallagher’s free-kick but United were continuing to be the aggressors with regards to attacking and the leveller arrived on 68 minutes. Baxter went early with a free-kick and Murphy got around the back of the defence before pulling back for DE GIROLAMO to force the ball home in front of the 2,819 Blades fans. De Girolamo went close to adding a second following Reed’s pass before the goalscorer was replaced by McNulty. As the last 10 minutes approached, Gallagher shot at Howard and Baxter was booked for kicking the ball away before Harris replaced the tiring Davies. Late on Reed was book despite appearing to win the ball. Huntington headed at Howard from a late, deep free-kick and five minutes of added time gave both sides hope of snatching a winner but apart from late corner when the Blades fans appealed for handball against Huntington, there were little opportunity for a winner.

Cult hero John Brayford is back - but this time he signs for United on a permanent deal. OWLS NEWS2014/15 TARGETS KEANE DELIGHTED MATTOCK OWLS RETURN WITH OWLS SWITCH New recruit Will Keane has spoken of his delight having joined Wednesday on loan for the rest of the season. The Manchester United striker linked up with the Owls on Thursday and is itching to get started at Hillsborough. Keane told swfc.co.uk: “We don’t have a game on Saturday but we play Birmingham on Tuesday so that’s not long to wait. “I’m really looking forward to it. Shefﬁeld Wednesday contacted United and it appealed to me straight away because this is a massive club with a great history.

“I’m sitting here in the ground now looking around and it’s a huge place. I just want to come here and help do my bit for the team and hopefully get some game time and score some goals.” On the Old Trafford books since the age of ten, Keane has picked up many positive traits having learned from some of the leading talents in the game. And he credits Champions League winner and former United star Ole Gunnar Solskaer in particular for aiding his development.

Keane added: “I did a lot of work with Ole, who took the strikers at United. “His record in front of goal was right up there on the biggest stage and you can’t help but learn from players like that. “I just want to play now and do myself justice. I was at Hillsborough whilst on loan with Wigan and QPR so I know the potential of the club. “I want to make the most of this opportunity and give it my all for Shefﬁeld Wednesday.”

Joe Mattock has outlined his main ambition for the rest of the campaign. The 24-year-old has been sidelined with a thigh injury since Wednesday’s victory over Wigan last month. But the left back is now back on track and battling to regain his place in the side, as the Owls prepare for a double-header this week against Birmingham and Reading. He said: “My main focus is to get as many games

as I possibly can under my belt between now and the end of the year. “I want to be out there contributing and doing my best for the side. “Hopefully I can stay out of the treatment room

now and I will get a chance to get back in the team in the near future. “I want to help the team ﬁnish as high up in the table as we can. “As a footballer, you don’t want to be in the stands watching the game. I’ve enjoyed watching the team do well but, at the same time, my job is to play for Shefﬁeld Wednesday.

BUXTON EYES COMEBACK

Lewis Buxton continued on the comeback trail by storing an hour under the belt during the Under-21s’ home game against Barnsley on Monday. The Middlewood Road clash ended 2-0 to the visitors but for Buxton, the fixture represented a significant stepping stone on the route to full fitness. Coach Lee Bullen said: “It was great to see Lewis back out there and for him to get an hour to his name is a positive. “I thought he acquitted himself really well, he was up and down the line and got some decent challenges in. “The plan was always to give Lewis an hour.
