FIRST WAVE OF ACTS ANNOUNCED FOR TRAMLINES 2015

ALBERT SNODGRASS

THIS WEEK In the News 05/2/1919 -

I invented the sandal for people with one leg. It was a flop.

06/2/1958 -

The inventor of the time machine has died... His funeral’s last week.

07/2/1935 08/2/1974 -

Last night I settled down to eat some Ben & Jerry’s with a DVD. I couldn’t be bothered to wash a spoon.

09/2/1969 10/2/1996 -

My dad always said to me, “Take it with a pinch of salt.” Nice man. Made horrible tea. I’ll never forget what my Grandfather said to me just before he died. “Are you still holding the ladder?”. I was at a job interview today. The interviewer said to me, “On your CV, it says that you are a man of mystery.” I said, “That’s correct.” He said, “Would you like to elaborate?” I said, “No.” I’m worried about the fear I’ve developed for moving stairs... It’s escalating. I was on my way into a furniture showroom today and saw a sign in the window that said ‘Over 150 different doors to choose from’. “Sod that” I said as I got back in my car, “I’ll be here all bloody day trying to get into this place.” Whenever I get hassle from anyone, I scare them off by telling them I’m undefeated in the World Kickboxing Championships. What I don’t tell them is, that’s because I’ve never entered them. My girlfriend accused me of cheating. “I would never cheat on you.” I told her. “Nonsense,” she snapped, “Who’s that girl that I see you with all the time?” “Elissa?” I replied. “Alicia.” coughed a voice from the wardrobe.

11/2/1990 -

Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and D.W. Griffith launch United Artists. Eight Manchester United F.C. players and 15 other passengers killed in the Munich air disaster. The classic board game Monopoly is invented. After 84 days in space, the crew of Skylab 4, the last crew to visit American space station Skylab, returns to Earth. First test flight of the Boeing 747. The IBM supercomputer Deep Blue defeats Garry Kasparov for the first time. Nelson Mandela is released from Victor Verster Prison outside Cape Town, South Africa after 27 years as a political prisoner.

Sheffield’s inner-city music festival Tramlines is thrilled to announce the first wave of artists for its 2015 event, which will take place in multiple venues and outdoor spaces across the city from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 July. With confirmations including Buzzcocks, Sugarhill Gang, Melle Mel & Scorpio, Martha Reeves, Dutch Uncles, Slaves, Jagaara, Marika Hackman, Roman Flugel and Blanck Mass, festival organisers have delivered another eclectic lineup, spanning international and UK talent, as it continues its seven year reign as one of the most diverse music festivals around. The 2015 event comes hot on the heels of Tramlines’ biggest year yet, with performances from Public Enemy, Sister Sledge, The Cribs, Katy B and over 200 other artists having made 2014’s festival a truly unforgettable weekend for 100,000 festival-goers. The early artists announced for Tramlines 2015 point towards another unforgettable weekend in the making, and with it come some true music legends. Buzzcocks bring with them a colossal backcatalogue of hits including What Do I Get and Ever Fallen In Love. Meanwhile, rap royalty Sugarhill Gang are set to wow the crowds with classics such as Rapper’s Delight and Apache; having contributed to the founding of hip-hop as part of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Melle Mel & Scorpio are going to create a storm performing epic tracks like The Message, and West Street Mob will bring hip-hop boogie at its very best in the form of Break Dance - Electro Boogie. Motown hit-maker Martha Reeves adds to the legend collective, touching down in Sheffield after celebrating 50 years of Dancing in The Street in 2014, whilst on the punk-tip, Tramlines welcomes political activist and punk troubadour Billy Bragg for his festival debut, playing wellknown hits from his 30-year career. From the established to the up-and-comer, a wealth of the UK’s most exciting breaking talent will also appear, showcasing a host of exciting new sounds. Acts include Manchester indie-pop five-piece Dutch Uncles; singer-songwriter and BBC 6 Music favourite Marika Hackman; duo and BBC Sound

2015 long-listers Slaves; North London sister trio Jagaara, and Liverpudlian psychedelic pop outfit and former Guardian Band of the Day Gulf. The electronic offering at Tramlines is also shaping up to be even sharper than last year, which saw the festival being shortlisted for Best Dance Event at the UK Festival Awards. Early confirmations include the techno giant with the Alter Ego alias and the man responsible for Geht’s Noch, Roman Flugel; one half of UK experimental electronic duo Fuck Buttons, Blanck Mass, whose track Sundowner featured in the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony and Ninja Tune signees Portico who drop their new album Living Fields in March, featuring the likes of Jamie Woon. Tramlines festival director Sarah Nulty said: “The 2014 lineup was one of our best ever so we knew we’d set the bar high for this year, and we think we’ve done it again with the legendary likes of Buzzcocks and Sugarhill Gang. We pride ourselves on being a ‘discovery’ festival where people can seek out established talent alongside breaking talent and are excited to share more big and brand-new names for the festival.” Tickets for Tramlines 2015 are available from www.tramlines.org.uk and cost just £30 for all three days, making it one of the most competitively priced festivals around. Where else can you see international legends alongside the UK’s most indemand new talent for less money? Sheffielders can also pay a visit to The Harley, the University of Sheffield’s Student Union box office, the Leadmill, City Hall or o2 Academy to pay in person. WIN TICKETS TO SEE THE SPECTACULAR DYNAMO LIVE SHOW AT THE ARENA Due to high demand, following the announcement last year that Dynamo would be embarking on his first ever live tour, it has now been confirmed that the tour run has been extended into 2016 and will visit 7 further cities in the UK and Ireland, including 5 nights at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield. Tickets are now on general sale. Tickets purchased online and through the ticket hotline are priced £43.45 & £35.75 plus a limited number of Golden Magic Circle tickets priced

£108.90 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena Box Office are priced £41.48 & £34.13 plus a limited number of Golden Magic Circle tickets priced £103.95 including booking fee. Dynamo fans will have the opportunity to see his magic skills up close and personal in what promises to be a spectacular and unique live stage production. Dynamo, whose real name is Steven Frayne, hit our screens just three years ago with his first series of Magician Impossible, in that short time he has quickly established himself as one of the world’s most known and most loved magicians, with his series airing in over 180 countries worldwide reaching over 250 million cumulative viewers across the world. He was recently awarded the highest accolade by the magic circle with his promotion to Member of the Inner Magic Circle with Gold Star, a position only held by 300 magicians worldwide, including HRH Prince of Wales. Dynamo said of his new venture, “After four series of Magician

Impossible I was ready for a new challenge and for a long time I have wanted to take my show to the stage. I am hoping that like I did for magic on TV, I can reinvent the live magic show and produce something fans have never seen before. This is something I have been working towards for the last 20 years and I can’t wait to amaze audiences what I have in store for them”. Tickets are now on general sale available in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk.

COMPETITION To be in with a chance of winning a pair of tickets to this spectacular show simply answer the following question and send your entry to info@mercurynewspaper. co.uk before 28/2/15 In which Yorshire city was Dynamo born? Closing Date: 28/2/15

FAMILY FUN AS TV FAVOURITES RACE INTO DONCASTER

Families will be racing to Doncaster when some special visitors drop by to entertain younger guests at two Family Fun Days being held at the racecourse in March and June. Popular children’s characters will be on hand to keep young ones entertained, while adults enjoy some top sporting action at the Lincoln Family Fun Day on Sunday March, 29 and Town Moor’s second Family Fun Day on Sunday June, 14. As well as frequent appearances by the TV favourites, the Family Fun Days will feature a packed schedule of familyfriendly entertainment including fairground rides and a Young Hooves Club colouring competition with great prizes up for grabs. The Family Fun Days have proven popular with younger and older race-goers alike in recent years, attracting some of the course’s largest ever crowds, second only to St Leger Day. Doncaster Racecourse will

soon be launching a Facebook competition for one lucky family to win a VIP Family Experience at the Lincoln Family Fun Day, including free tickets. Kieran Gallagher, executive director at Doncaster Racecourse, said: “Our Family Fun Days are always a real family extravaganza and once again our 2015 events will see a great line-up of entertainment for children and adults alike, including some very special well-known guests. Watch this space as we’ll be announcing which children’s TV favourites will be appearing very soon! “The Family Fun Days always prove incredibly popular as they offer an unrivalled mix of entertainment as well as some top quality horse racing, so I’d urge people to book up soon, particularly for our March raceday. One lucky family will get to enjoy the day free of charge and in true VIP style, so keep an eye on our Facebook page for more.”

Children can learn all about horse racing ahead of the Family Fun Days by becoming member of the free to join Young Hooves Kids Club. Members will receive a goody bag including information about horses, crayons and binoculars ready for a day at the races, as well as access to games and information on the Kids Club website. The March 29 Family Fun Day is part of the Lincoln weekend at Doncaster Racecourse. The famous £100,000 Lincoln Heritage Handicap gets underway on Saturday March 28 and marks the official start of the 2015 UK Flat Racing Season. For further information about the Family Fun Days at Doncaster Racecourse or to book tickets visit www. doncaster-racecourse.co.uk or call 01302 304200 .

COMPETITION To be in with a chance of winning a pair of County Enclosure passes to the afternoon racing on Wednesday 18th February simply send us your name and daytime telephone number to either info@ mercurynewspaper.co.uk or 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG before Noon on Monday 9th February. Robin Hood & Babes in the Wood

Penistone Theatre Group are back by popular demand with their annual Pantomime. Over the years this community group has built up a massive following producing Pantomimes which rival anything put on at the big City Theatres. A great night for all the family. This year they perform their own version of Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood. When King Richard goes off to fight the evil Saracens he makes the misguided decision to leave his two children with his brother, the Sheriff of Nottingham, for safekeeping. The Sheriff enlists the help of his old nanny Nurse Phillipa Bedpan to look after them at the Castle. When the he realises he will inherit his brother’s fortune should the Babes die, he hatches an evil plan to get rid of them. He tricks two simpletons, Cod & Piece to do the deed. They take the Babes deep into heart of the forest where they leave them to die. The outlaw Robin Hood hears of this wrong-doing and with the help of Maid Marian and his band of Merry Men (Friar Tuck, Little John, and Will Scarlett) he thwarts the plan and takes the children into hiding. Needless to say, the Sheriff is not a happy man. Oh No He Isn’t! In an attempt to lure Robin out of hiding the Sheriff organises an archery contest, the prize for which is Maid Marian’s hand in marriage. Will the Sheriff of Nottingham do away with the Sherwood do-gooders, marry Maid Marian for himself and commit the townsfolk to a life of tyranny and extortion? It has all the usual ingredients and a few more. Don’t miss this great show. Many performances sell out so book early.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

I’ve been back on my favourite stretch of the River Dove this week, and I’ve had my first pb of the year! The river isn’t particularly wide or imposing through this stretch, so it’s real sneak about stuff, but it’s great fun and I love it! It’s also a great opportunity to use my favoured (but discontinued) Sonik Sports Twin Tip rods which offer unrivalled options when it comes to fishing these small rivers. Although the river had received some rain, and was slightly coloured, I found I could still get away with just a 2oz for bite indication, so after picking my spot, I tackled up quickly. In previous sessions, for some reason, I’ve never had much luck when trotting for the grayling I know inhabit this area, but I’ve always done well on the feeder. With that in mind, I chose a Kamasan Black Cap feeder, which I’d taped to block almost all of the holes to allow the maggots to drip feed out slowly when it lay on the river bed. This went straight on the 6lb mainline, attached by a swivel clip, and was stopped by a number 4 split shot (no finesse required!) A 3lb 6oz hooklink terminating in a size 16 barbless completed the rig, with the feeder set a couple of feet from the hook and a pinch of maggots was added before the first cast. The river holds a fair head of good sized trout which can smash up a swim pretty quickly, and sure enough, the first wrap around bite came from a lean wild brown trout of about 3lbs. The next cast brought the same result, as did the third! The grayling weren’t getting a look in, so I decided to remove the baited hook and try to feed the trout off by introducing a pinch of dead maggots every thirty seconds or so... for an hour! After resting the swim, I was hopeful that the trout would have eaten their fill, and that other fish may have moved in. The next cast was gently lobbed across the stream to the edge of the ripple and allowed to settle with a slight bend in the quivertip. Within a minute or two, I started to get indications which can only be described as looking as though a violin bow was being drawn across the line; very strange indeed! A swift full blooded bite soon followed, and the resulting strike was met with considerable resistance which I initially thought may have been a chub. The fish didn’t immediately dive for the nearest tree root though, instead it hung about in the centre of the river giving solid resistance and the occasional thump which my trusty twin tip soaked

up impressively. As the fish eventually neared the net, I still hadn’t seen it, so was overjoyed to spot the pink and purple sail of a decent grayling cutting through the water as I quickly scooped it up! Result! Safely unhooked, the lady of the stream was weighed at a personal best busting 2lb 2oz which I was extremely pleased with. By the end of the morning, I’d had around a dozen decent grayling, and yet more trout before the swim went quiet; I’d guess a pike had moved in on the commotion, but I couldn’t hook it despite offering a variety of lures and a juicy deadbait! Time to move on... I’d still got time to visit a lake on the other side of the road which I knew held a good head of pike to around 19lbs, so I took another Sonik rod, this time the SK4 Spin rod, to try and bag a few predators before home. At this time of year, the lake is crystal clear, but is full of debris which can make lure fishing tricky, so I chose a shallow water plug and had a cast around. The obvious places to try were explored first, marginal reed beds offer superb cover to winter pike, and within three casts I’d hooked a small pike of around 5lbs which hit the lure right under the rod tip in an explosion of freezing water! I can never get over the knee wobbling shock (nor do I want to!) of a hit under my feet, I absolutely love the glimpse of wide open mouth and steely head of a pike striking the lure where I can see it, and the powerful lunge from the depths and rod bending hit always takes me by surprise; I love it! I finished an hour of exploration with three pike, all of similar size, I also lost two others and tried to outwit a slightly bigger fish which followed the lure four times before stopping a rod length out and sat watching me as I tried to entice a hit... to no avail... In summary, I had a fantastic day despite bitter winds and occasional rain. I had my first pb of the year, had some fun with predators, and caught steadily for a few hours in one of my favourite swims: what more can you ask for?

by Michael Clarke There was a further weekend of weather woe for the County Senior League. Sadly, only three fixtures survived the cold.

that was where the good news ended for them, as they fell to a 2-0 defeat. Thomas Perrie and Jamie Harrison scored the vital goals to give Kiveton their first league win since November. The win takes Kiveton up one place to third-from-the-bottom in the table.

Division Two Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves moved into fourth place in Division Two, with a 2-1 win over Bawtry Town at the Keepmoat Stadium. Worsbrough have played three games this year, and have won all three including an impressive 3-1 win over runaway leaders Byron House. New Bohemians’ home game with Kiveton Park got the go-ahead after it was switched to the 4G pitch at SHU Sports Ground. Sadly for New Bohemians

U21 Division Bawtry Town U21 were in action at the Keepmoat Stadim in an early kick-off against Millmoor Juniors U21. Millmoor Juniors were inspired to a 5-2 victory, by an hat-trick by Bradley Bartholomew. Mused Salem and Corey Cresswell were also on target for Millmoor. The win is Millmoor’s eighth consecutive league win and keeps them in second place, only one point behind leaders Houghton Main U21.

We’ve got another week on the training ground with this group and we’ll get ready.”

HOME SHIRT REVEALED Next Season will be another season in the Red and White hoops for Rovers. We are pleased to announce that we will be wearing a hooped kit again thanks to the 100’s of you that took part in the home shirt vote which forms part of In Rovers We Trust. The Club can also proudly announce that One Call Insurance will continue their fantastic relationship with us for a further two years taking their sponsorship deal up to May 2017. That makes the partnership status 7 years in total, something that is very unique in football in this day and age. Commercial Manger Andrew Whitham said “To secure the One Call deal for another 2 years is brilliant news and it’s a partnership that we can all be proud of. It’s a local business supporting their local team and that is what we are both about. Nik Springthorpe (MD of One Call) is really keen to take the relationship of the two businesses to the next level, so as well as working with Rovers for two more years, they will also be involved in the Dons sponsorship and as a business they will be reaching out to both sets of supporters with some really exciting offers. Watch this space”.

GAFFER UPBEAT AFTER POINT AGAINST SPIREITES Paul Dickov unperturbed by his team letting three points slide in local thriller. Paul Dickov maintained that he was satisfied with his side’s point against Chesterfield on Doncaster’s debut visit to the Proact Stadium. Early goals from James Coppinger and Andy Butler put Dickov’s men in charge, before momentary lapses allowed the Spireites a share of the spoils. “We were disappointed that we conceded a late goal,” started Dickov. “We started really well; the scoreline suggests that and then the last ten or fifteen minutes of the first half, for some reason, we looked as though we tried to just see it out and there was still an hour left in the game. “We let Chesterfield get back in to it and in the second half, if we put our chances away; we win the game three or four goals to one. OPEN TRIALS FOR THE MILLERS The Academy have again successfully staged more open trials at Dearne Valley College. Following the success of the trials last year, the Academy once again gave youngsters an opportunity to impress the Millers Academy coaches. “Off the back of the open trials we held recently we signed some very promising individuals into the Academy,” Garreth Barker told Millers Matchday. “The trials were a great opportunity for us to discover some local talent because we feel that there are certainly players out there who have some ability. Chris Kirby is co-ordinating efforts on this and he can be contacted on the details below as I’m sure we will be looking to stage some more in the near future.” Anyone interested can contact Chris at ckirby@rotherhamunited.net

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD UNITED

BLADES NEWS2014/15 DONE DEAL LONG The Blades have secured the signature of the striker wanted by Nigel Clough. United have signed Rochdale’s Matt Done for an undisclosed fee. The striker, who has scored 14 goals so far this season, has signed a two-and-a-half year deal with the option for a further year. The 26-year-old, who lists Barnsley amongst his former clubs, switched to Spotland in the summer of 2013, where he has impressed since being converted into a central striker. His statistics this season include 10 goals in 23 Sky Bet League One starts, eight assists and two hat-tricks. Boss Clough was delighted with the late capture: “Matt is a player we have watched extensively over the last few months. We’ve been impressed with his goals, assists and work-rate. He is lively, can play in a number of attacking positions and he also offers us additional pace in dangerous areas.” Done completed formalities on the deal at United’s Shirecliffe training base on Monday evening before telling www.sufc.co.uk:

“I’m delighted to sign for a Club the size of Sheffield United. It was just an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. “I’d like to thank everyone at Rochdale, from top to bottom, for the last couple of seasons, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Spotland and wish them all the best for the future. “The aim now is to develop further and I’d love to help to get Sheffield United back to the Championship, where the Club should be. I feel, with the squad and management, this Club is very capable of having a good crack at promotion and personally I’m particularly excited to be playing in front of 20,000 fans every other week.” Done is United’s fifth capture of the January transfer window following the signings of Paul Coutts, Kieron Freeman, John Brayford and Jason Holt. Additionally, Jamie Murphy and Terry Kennedy signed extensions on their contracts over the weekend.

LOAN

Goalkeeper George Long has joined Scottish Premiership side Motherwell onloan until the end of May. With Mark Howard in possession of the number one spot at Bramall Lane to date this season, boss Nigel Clough has always emphasised the importance of getting the 21-year-old stopper playing regular first-team football, with Iain Turner providing competition for Howard. England U21 international Long, who made his United debut against Swansea City at the end of the 2010/11 season as a 17-year-old, had a loan spell with Oxford United during the first-half of the season, making 11 starts for the U’s. “Hopefully this will prove to be a good move for George,” said Blades chief Clough. “We’ve consistently said that he would benefit from playing on a regular basis and we hope this will be the case at Motherwell.” Long could make his ‘Well debut against Ross County on Saturday.

OPEN TRIAL SESSIONS

Sheffield United’s Academy will be providing current U11/12s players with the opportunity to attend open trial sessions during the February half-term. Sessions will take place at the Club’s Redtooth Academy Facility and boys that are interested in attending should register their interest by asking parents to send an email to Anthony. MCGINN CONTRACT CANCELLED United can confirm that the contract of Stephen McGinn has been cancelled by mutual consent. The midfielder had joined SPL outfit Dundee on-loan for the rest of the season on Friday and subsequently made his debut for The Dees in their 1-1 draw with Hamilton at the weekend. The 26-year-old featured four times for United this season, starting two Capital One Cup fixtures and two Johnstone’s Paint Trophy ties. In total, McGinn, who was signed by former boss David Weir on a free transfer from Watford in the summer of 2013, made 42 appearances for the Blades, 32 of which were starts. Blades chief Nigel Clough commented: “Stephen is a fantastic person and despite not playing a lot this season he has been a model professional, we wish him well in the next stages of his career.”

name, date of birth and a brief outline of playing history. In order to be selected for a trial you must not be currently registered with another professional club. There are only a limited number of places available so not all players will be invited - we hope to run similar activities on a regular basis to give as many local players as possible the chance to enjoy our Academy experience. The closing date for applications will be Friday 13th February at 5pm. Those that are successful will be contacted by Academy

staff. We hope to hold more sessions for a variety of age groups later in the year. Some players may be offered the opportunity to register with the Academy following the trial session other may be invited to attend one of our development centres. However players and parents are reminded that obtaining a schoolboy contract is a huge challenge so as a priority players attending need to be realistic about the chances of success and use the opportunity to enjoy the facility and experience what that the Academy offers.

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

OWLS NEWS2014/15 OWLS SIGN ROMANIAN STRIKER MCGUGAN KEEN Sheffield Wednesday have signed coveted European striker Sergiu Bus for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance. The 22-year-old hotshot has put pen to paper on a three and a half year contract at Hillsborough. Bus joins the Owls from CSKA Sofia, for whom he signed last summer. He has since made a big impression in the

Bulgarian top-flight, scoring ten goals in just 19 games. Prior to joining CSKA, Bus began his career at hometown club CFR Cluj before enjoying loan spells with Unirea Alba Iulia, Târgu Mureș, Gaz Metan Mediaș and Corona Brașov. Bus has also earned recognition on the international stage, with an impressive record of four goals in seven

KELHAR VERMIJL EXTENDS SIGNS UP OWLS STAY AT S6

Dejan Kelhar has extended his stay with Sheffield Wednesday. The 30-year-old initially signed a short term contract at Hillsborough after a successful trial with the club. The former Red Star Belgrade stopper will remain at Hillsborough until the end of the season.

Sheffield Wednesday have signed Manchester United defender Marnick Vermijl for an undisclosed fee. The Belgian has penned a three and a half year contract at Hillsborough. Vermijl, 23, is a highly rated prospect who was tipped for regular first team football by Sir Alex Ferguson. Part of that glowing endorsement came on the back of Vermijl’s versatility - primarily a right back, the youngster is equally adept all the way across the rearguard. Marnick Vermijl in action for Man Utd

games for the Romania Under-21s. He is tipped for full international honours with Romania and will wear shirt number 28 at Hillsborough.

He proved a big influence for the United reserves in 2012 as the Red Devils lifted the title, earning a loan move to Dutch Eredivisie side NEC Nijmegen, for whom he played 28 games, chipping in with three goals. Vermijl has also represented Belgium at every level from Under-17s to Under-21s, earning 43 caps in total and scoring five times. He will wear shirt number 36 for the Owls.

TO REPAY OWLS

Owls loanee Lewis McGugan has said he aims to repay Sheffield Wednesday by producing the goods on the pitch. The 26-year-old was delighted to return to S6 after a previous loan spell earlier in the campaign. McGugan wants to help the Owls finish 2014/15 in strong fashion and he told the club’s official website: “I wanted to go to a club where I felt wanted and hopefully I can repay

everyone now with my performances. “The fans have been tremendous with me, made me feel welcome and that is a strong reason for coming back. “I want to hit the ground running and get down to work quickly.” McGugan made seven appearances for Wednesday on loan between last November and December before returning to Watford. Now the former Forest man wants to get down to business and

concentrate on his football at Hillsborough. He added: “It’s great to be back. In my last spell I enjoyed it and everyone around the place made me feel welcome. “I’m glad it’s done and I can now concentrate until the end of the season and give my best for this club. “We have a strong base, we don’t concede a lot of goals and that’s massive to have. We need to build on that. “I’ve been in this league long enough to know that anything is possible, there’s always one team that rises from the pack so I don’t see why that can’t be us.”

PORTUGESE MIDFIELDER CHECKS IN

Sheffield Wednesday have signed midfielder Filipe Joaquim Melo Silva from Portugese side Moreirenses for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance. The 25-year-old has signed a three and a half year contract at Hillsborough. The towering midfielder is known as Melo in Portugal, where he has played for Moreirense since 2013. Melo soon developed into a fans’ favourite and captained Moreirense to the Portugese top tier last season. He began his career with Uniao Lamas and also represented native clubs BeiraMar, Avanca, Eapinho,

Arouca and Naval. Melo becomes the Owls’ fourth signing on transfer deadline day,
