ALBERT SNODGRASS

A man returns home a day early from a business trip. It’s after midnight. While en route home, he asks the cabby if he would be a witness. The man suspects his wife is having an affair, and he wants to catch her in the act. For £100, the cabby agrees. Quietly arriving home, the husband and cabby tip toe into the bedroom. The husband switches on the lights, yanks the blanket back and there is his wife in bed with another man! The husband puts a gun to the naked man’s head. The wife shouts, ‘Don’t do it! I lied when I told you I inherited money’ HE paid for the Porsche I gave you. HE paid for our new cabin cruiser. HE paid for your season tickets. HE paid for our house at the lake. He looks over at the cabby and says, ‘What would you do? The cabby replies, ‘I’d cover him with that blanket before he catches a cold. LACK OF TECHNOLOGY LEADS TO FUEL POVERTY

The wide-spread use of the inter-net and other new technology in relation to energy suppliers is contributing to fuel poverty, according to new research by National Energy Action. The tendency to put services and information largely online has led to large numbers of older people being digitally excluded. This means they are more likely to face higher costs for energy services and products which are not bought online, receive a lesser service or even be prevented from accessing some products entirely. For example, without access to the internet it is almost impossible to compare energy charges. The research also found that 57% of pensioners were worried about being able to afford their energy bills, while under-heating the home was a common practice by 77% of older people. Marion Wilson, NPC vice president said: “There will always be a proportion of older people that are unable to use the internet and they should not be penalised as a result.” “Services to assist older people to get the best energy deal should be easily accessible and available face-to-face as well as in paper form.” Source – NPC Campaign Bulletin – For further info see: http://npcuk.org/ Sheffield 50+ run IPad Courses for beginners. Wednesday 25th February 2015…put this date in your diaries ladies and gents, as this will mark the broadcast of the biggest night within the British music industry…the mighty BRIT Awards! Showing on ITV and sponsored by Mastercard, this year’s spectacular will be hosted by British presenting legends Ant and Dec. With the nominations recently being announced (plus a chance for you to have your own say as well) M-Live is here to bring you all the gossip from the BRIT camp…it really is our pleasure! So, let us get straight into the nominations…with twelve categories up for grabs, along with two

categories chosen by the general public – British Video and British Breakthrough Act (check out www.brits.co.uk to cast your vote) it really does seem that 2015’s BRIT Awards are destined to be their most successful to date. First up, British album. Up for nomination is George Ezra, Alt-J, Ed Sheeran, Royal Blood and Sam Smith. But who would you award? Dominating this year’s ceremony, 22 year old Sam Smith is up for a host of awards to include British Male Solo Artist, British Video, Mastercard British Album, British Breakthrough Act and British Single for “Stay With Me.” Singer songwriter Ed Sheeran is also hotly tipped to be awarded a BRIT this year, with nominations in the categories of Mastercard British Album, British Male Solo Artist, British Single for “Thinking Out Loud” and British Video. Sam verses Ed…let the games begin! Former X Factor starlet Ella Henderson has also received her fair share of nominations, up for British Female Solo Artist and British Single for “Ghost.” Also within the category for British Female includes FKA Twigs, Jessie Ware, Lily Allen and Paloma Faith. Stiff competition, but who will be victorious on the night? International Female Solo Artist is a category we simply cannot call, with Beyonce, Taylor Swift Lana Del Ray, Sia and Saint Vincent all potential winners. International Male Solo Artist is equally tough, with John Legend, Pharrell Williams, Jack White, Hozier and Beck all in the running. Clean Bandit are up for British Group and British Single for their summer sensation “Rather Be,” whilst alternative rockers Royal blood feature in British Breakthrough Act, Mastercard British Album and British Group. Singer songwriter George Ezra could be a winner on the night, up for British Breakthrough Act, Mastercard British Album, British Male Solo Artist and British Single for “Budapest.” If this wasn’t exciting enough, Madonna and Take That have recently been announced to perform at the star studded event…so prepare yourself for glitter, copious amounts of hair spray and bucket loads of makeup…and that’s just from Take That!

Multi-platinum, award winning Irish pop rock group The Script are to return to the steel city on 28th February as part of their 2015 worldwide tour. Gracing the sold out Motorpoint Arena, the three piece from Dublin have recently released their fourth studio album, “No Sound Without Silence,” flying straight into the number one chart position, along with charting top 10 in over 40 countries. Since their formation back in 2001, The Script have scored international heights with their four huge studio albums, selling more than 20 million records throughout the world. Their most successful single to date, “Hall Of Fame” was a worldwide number one with more than 5 million sales and 150 million youtube hits. The single also achieved 100 million Spotify plays, ensuring The Script truly were marked in the musical hall of fame…(like that we did there!) The bands fourth studio album has been regarded as their most accomplished piece to date, released in the UK on 15th September 2014. The album was released through Columbia records, recorded largely on The Script’s tour bus whilst undertaking their 2013 “3 World Tour.” As rumour has it, over 40 tracks were penned on board their bus, however 11 of the very best were selected to appear on the record.

Discussing the writing and recording process of “No Sound Without Silence,” lead vocalist Danny O’Donoghue said: “We’d come off stage and start recording straight away in a studio bus. Everything’s massive, everything’s larger than life on stage so when we hit the studio we wanted it to have that some impact.” Guitarist Mark Sheehan also explained that, “We’d come off stage and you can imagine the adrenaline up there. You can smoke or drink it away, but with a studio there’s something to expel that nervous energy.” And it seemed the press were equally as excited about their fourth album as the band were. Evigshed Magazine gave the album a perfect 5 stars, calling it a “collection of timeless songs you need in your life, irresistibly addictive and absolutely essential for your music library…The Script put their heart and soul into this album.” The Script will perform at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena on 28th February 2015. Check out the website, www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk. Tickets can be purchased at the Arena Box Office, on the website or by calling 0114 2565656. Tickets start from £30.25. See the website for full details.

The BRIT Awards will be broadcast on 25th February 2015 on ITV. Check out the website www. brits.co.uk for all the details!

To post a personal message to your loved one simply visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/guidedogslove, choose the amount you'd like to donate, write your message and don’t forget to put your name. Your act of puppy love will help fund Guide Dogs’ vital work enabling people who are blind and partially sighted, throughout the UK, to get about independently, in the way that they choose. Supporting a Guide Dog partnership costs £5 a day. Guide Dogs receives no government funding for their services and rely entirely on public donations. Thanks for supporting our life changing work and Happy Valentine's Day from Guide Dogs! Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

The big freeze continues to bite, so for many anglers, the only viable option for a day out is to fish the rivers, and that is where I’ve been again this week. I chose to target a stretch of the River Derwent just outside Derby which I’ve been told holds numerous chub which was my intended quarry for the day, but it didn’t go entirely to plan... The Earl of Harrington’s Angling Club hold several miles of this extremely picturesque river, and I was at the top of the club boundary on a very cold, crisp day last week. I arrived early, threw in a few small balls of prepared breadcrumb and mash hoping to get the fish feeding, as I set about tackling up. As usual, my preferred rod is a very flexible tool from Sonik Sports which has unfortunately been discontinued, so I treat it very gently! These rods offer an Avon style tip which is easily interchangeable with a quivertip with a choice of three push in tips. I would certainly recommend a similar rod if you intend to fish running waters as it does give countless options depending on river conditions. My attack this week would consist of one bait only; bread. One of the cheapest baits on the market, and still one of the most effective, I’d spent the previous evening liquidising a couple of loaves to give me a bucket full of crumb to pack my feeder, and by adding a bit of water, a perfect sloppy mash to hopefully get fish feeding! I chose to use a fairly big size 8 Vardis Tackle Classic Boilie hook as the wide gape holds a chunk of crust or flake very well and is easily strong enough to cope with a heavy lunge from a hooked chub as it plunges towards cover! After resting the swim for half an hour, I cast towards a partially submerged tree which had created a deep eddy behind it; perfect chub territory! The feeder hit the river bed and promptly discharged it’s load of breadcrumb as the breadflake on the hook hung enticingly a couple of feet further downstream... what more could they want? Chub are easily spooked by repeated casting, so the second rod, similarly baited, was also gently lobbed out and left to settle. I usually change the bait every thirty minutes or so just to be sure I’ve still got something on the hook, but otherwise, it’s a waiting game... A couple of biteless hours ensued; a move to another likely area also resulted in no action, so I had to reconsider my options. Despite the lack of fish, I had had the pleasure of the company of handsome old fox for almost ten minutes as it watched me from the opposite bank, which, as the sunlight threw up the russets and cream of its coat looked absolutely stunning. I’ve never seen such a handsome old fox (except obviously in the bathroom mirror!) and it

really brightened a frustrating morning. Having wasted too much time already, I decided eventually to return the nearby River Dove, and try my luck there... Like many anglers, I have a ‘banker’ swim and I set up in exactly the same spot as last week, hoping this time for a chub rather than the super grayling sport I had previously. Once more, the swim was quietly baited, and left to settle for a short period before a single bait was cast downstream and the tip left to tighten up. Every few minutes, a steady stream of walnut sized balls of crumb were lobbed upstream to break over the baited area and I sat back to wait for a hungry Chevin. The weather was gorgeous, a mug of tea was in hand, and I was thoroughly enjoying watching the numerous wrens, wagtails and occasional buzzard flitting around my swim; as I glanced back at the tip, I watched it nod once... then wrap around in a classic chub bite! Lifting the rod, the fish instantly went for the cover of a midstream weedbed and everything went solid! Typical chub! A couple of seconds of steady pressure resulted in the fish kiting upstream towards yet another snag, so a little bit of effort drew the fish into mid water where I could feel it kicking purposefully. My hooklink was relatively light, so care was needed to draw the fish from downstream towards the waiting net, so a couple of minutes passed before the fish was finally in sight... another big grayling! Although not the chub I was hoping for, I have to admit I was pleased to tempt another decent grayling, this one at 1lb 12oz to add to my recent tally of quality fish. I was also surprised to remember that this particular fish had indeed taken a big lump of flake on a big hook, and after returning it safely, I was further surprised by yet more grayling and some more big trout... all on bread! Although I didn’t achieve my aim this week, I still had a lovely day on the rivers, and at this time of year, when opportunities may be limited by ice, I have to adapt my angling accordingly. If you are champing at the bit, waiting for the big thaw, why not try something different and head for the river? I guarantee you will enjoy it!

LOCAL FOOTBALL by Michael Clarke After two weeks of weather-interrupted fixture lists, the County Senior League returned to normality with most fixtures getting the go-ahead on Saturday. League Cup Quarter-Final Joker FC put aside their poor league form to book their place in the League Cup Semi-Finals with a hard-fought victory over Division Two’s Denaby Main at the Bill Chafer Youth Centre. Joker FC join Oughtibridge WMFC and Swinton Athletic in the next stage. The last Quarter-Final takes place next week between Parkgate Reserves and High Green Villa. Premier Division Goals from Ryan Foxey, Gavin Halford and Marcus Clarey helped league leaders Swinton Athletic to a 3-2 away win over Frecheville. A Craig Senior hat-trick gave Jubilee Sports a 3-1 win over second placed Houghton Main at Chaucer School. The win leaves Jubilee Sports in fourth place. There was more bad news for Houghton Main, as they fell to third place following Swallownest Miners Welfare’s impressive 4-1 away win over Oughtibridge WMFC. Swallownest trail leaders Swinton by only two points with game spare. The title race is still tight though, with only five points separating Swinton and fifth placed Oughtibridge. Wickersley built on their mid-table position with a 2-1 win over fellow mid-table side Athersley Recreation Reserves at Sheerien Park. Division One North Gawber Colliery registered their eighth consecutive league win, with a 2-1 home win over Sheffield Bankers. Carey Walford and Kez Garner scored the vital goals for the league leaders. Penistone Church Reserves are remain just two points behind the leaders, after they were made to work hard for a 3-2 away win over Ecclesfield Red Rose. Penistone have won all of their last five league games. Dominic Beevers was the star of the show for High Green Villa, scoring three times as they beat Millmoor Juniors Reserves at Grange Park. The win takes High Green up to third position in the table. Goals form Jamie Dixon and Aiden Goddard gave Silkstone United a 2-0 home win over Davy FC. The win ends a run of four league games without-a-win for mid-table Silkstone. Fifth placed Rotherham Town were held to a 2-2 draw at home to South Kirkby Colliery. The point does not really help promotion chasing Rotherham or relegation battling South Kirkby. Division Two League leaders Byron House slipped to their third straight defeat, as they were downed 4-1 by Parkgate Reserves. Luckily for Byron House they still have a nine point cushion at the summit of the table. Jamie Harrison scored the only goal to give Kiveton Park a vital win over fellow strugglers New Bohemians at Stone Close. Strangely the two sides met in the reverse fixture last week. On that occasion Kiveton also took the spoils with a 2-0 victory.

Following consecutive corners, Pringle swung a deep outswinger which caused havoc in the visitors’ box and with appeals for a spotkick as bodies tumbled in the six-yard box, Newton pounced on the loose ball to plant the ball towards goal and Sammon showed great awareness to control smartly before firing a low effort which went under the body of Bialkowski to nestle in the heart of the visitors’ goal. The Millers had a stroke of luck when Skuse’s innocuous centre saw Arnason make a hash of his clearance but Murphy fluffed his lines with a tame effort from just inside the six-yard box which went into the grateful hands of Collin. At the other end, the home side launched a lightning counter-attack which saw Sammon give Pringle the opportunity to clip a delightful centre which was perfectly arrowed into the run of Green, whose snap volley was blocked by a retreating defender before Pringle blazed a shot over the bar in the next attack following some fine-one touch football from the home side. With time running out for the visitors, Arnason showed great awareness to snuff out the threat of Sears, as he looked to shoot goalwards before the Millers missed a gilt-edged chance to make in three in stoppage time when Smallwood’s clearance fell invitingly into the run of sub Jordan Bowery, who left the visitors’ rearguard in his wake, but Bialkowski managed to get a hand on his goalbound effort and the ball looped narrowly over the bar. MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD UNITED

BLADES NEWS2014/15 TWO DEFEATS IN A WEEK FOR THE BLADES United’s return to league action following cup exploits was ruined by two late goals in Kent. On the day that Gillingham announced Justin Edinburgh as their new manager, Jermaine McGlashan and Cody McDonald netted the late strikes to give the home side victory. Jason Holt made his debut from the bench but there was no place for new striker Matt Done, who is nursing a minor injury. Following the disappointment of the

midweek FA Cup defeat, chief Clough rung the changes again - five in total. Brayford, Davies, Adams, Reed and Coutts started and McEveley was named as captain. Davies was involved in the game’s first talking point, being accused of handball in the penalty area but referee Williamson was unmoved, whilst United’s first chance came as the result of mistakes in the home defence but Gillingham cleaned up after goalkeeper Nelson dropped Ehmer’s sliced

clearance. After the initial exchanges United looked good on the break and won a couple of corners, from one of which, Gillingham were forced to clear off the line twice from a Davies delivery, the first from one of their own defenders and the second from Brayford. On 21 minutes, Nelson tipped away an Adams shot after Davies laid off following Murphy’s run and Gillingham hit back with a Dack free-kick, which struck the wall after McEveley’s foul on

McDonald. The limited chances were coming at both ends. Reed’s impressive control, turn and shot brought a good save out of Nelson, who held on when Murphy was lurking and Gillingham’s McDonald chipped onto the roof of the net after being gifted possession by Baxter. The final chance of the half did fall to the Blades and Adams looked as though he was struggling to keep possession but he managed to evade three defenders before half-volleying over the crossbar. After the interval the contest was open in early exchanges with both outfits trying to utilise space. Coutts cut

BITTERLY DISAPPOINTED Nigel Clough conceded he was ‘bitterly disappointed’ with United’s 2-0 defeat against Gillingham at Priestfield on Saturday. The Blades boss admitted he would have settled for a point from a scrappy encounter in Kent, but was angered at how United gave the game away in the latter stages. Clough reflected: “We are bitterly disappointed

with the result. I thought we played well at times in the first-half, but it looked like the game had 0-0 written all over it. “Then in the 86th minute Mark Howard has a rush of blood, following a poor kick initially and that proves decisive. “We didn’t create an awful lot, but neither did Gillingham. It was a difficult surface and both sides cancelled

each other out. “But we failed to make the most of getting ourselves into some very good situations and that is particularly frustrating. “It was a tough afternoon, so we would have taken a point in the circumstances and moved on to Tuesday night against Colchester United, but you certainly don’t lose the game in the manner we did.

The Gaffer added: “Our final ball was poor, especially when you look at the quality we had out there. Our decision making in key areas wasn’t up to standard either and we should have come in at half-time in front after controlling much of the opening 45 minutes. “We should have had a goal or two to show for our efforts but we haven’t got that belief at the moment. “We played too many aimless balls forward throughout the game. Both teams wiped each other out in midfield, so we needed to be brave and exploit the space down the flanks, but neither of our full-backs contributed anything positive in forward areas. “We want to win every game, we know though that is unlikely so what you have to do in scrappy games is not lose, like we did last season, but at the moment individual errors are proving very costly.”

in from the right but shot over and Gillingham went mightily close on 56 minutes when McDonald volleyed Hessenthaler’s cross against the bar from 18 yards. Just after the hour Campbell-Ryce replaced Davies and as Gillingham looked to boss the midfield at the midway stage of the half, Dack clipped wide from Hoyte’s pull-back. Holt was given his debut for the final 15 minutes, replacing Baxter, but the next chance fell to Murphy following a run from the left but his effort was held by Nelson. McNulty was thrown on in the final ten minutes, taking over from Adams, but disaster

was moments away. A United punt out of defence was countered by similar from Ehmer, however, his clearance dropped behind McEveley and perfectly for McGLASHAN, who just poked beyond the onrushing Howard and into the empty net. Late on Basham was thrown forward as an emergency, extra striker and McNulty battled with Egan to try to capitalise on a mistake but the only late goal came on the break at the other end. Reed gave away possession and McGlashan’s pace allowed McDONALD space and he lashed home from the edge of the box - the final action of the fixture.

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

OWLS NEWS2014/15 OWLS COME FROM BEHIND ONE POINT SHOULD HAVE TO GAIN HOME POINT BEEN THREE SAYS GRAY Will Keane scored his first professional goal as his second half penalty earned the Owls a point against Cardiff. Former Wednesday loanee Kenwyne Jones gave the visitors an early advantage but the hosts hit back to claim a deserved share of the spoils. On an emotional afternoon at Hillsborough, Milan Mandaric addressed the crowd ahead of his imminent departure having agreed a deal to sell the club to Dejphon Chansiri. The outgoing chairman was visibly moved on the pitch but just seven minutes after taking his seat, Wednesday were a goal down.

New recruit Scott Malone swung a deep cross to the far post and Jones headed across Keiren Westwood and into the net. It was harsh on Wednesday, though, who had started the game well and responded to the setback in a similar fashion. Kieran Lee went close from distance, so too did Chris Maguire, as the Owls asked all the questions through the first half. Cardiff broke sporadically and Eoin Doyle brought a flying save from Westwood three minutes before the interval but by and large, it was the home side in the driving seat but the Welshmen had the lead. That almost changed

straight after the restart when Stevie May went charging in on goal and shot past Simon Moore only to see the ball thump the post. Wednesday continued to press and only desperate defending from Aron Gunnarsson prevented Keane restoring parity on 54 minutes. Sam Hutchinson then fired over the bar after finding space in the penalty area before Stuart Gray threw new signing Sergiu Bus on from the bench. And the Romanian was at the centre of the action as Wednesday won a penalty on 75 minutes. Bus was pushed to the ground by Malone, the referee pointed to the spot and Keane stepped up to fire home from 12 yards. That gave Wednesday the impetus to push on for a winner, which they came close to achieving when Jose Semedo’s late shot was deflected just over the crossbar. Lewis McGugan stung Moore’s hands with the clock ticking down but despite being camped in Cardiff’s half for the last ten minutes, the Owls had to settle for the draw.

Stuart Gray says Wednesday deserved all three points instead of the one they posted against Cardiff on Saturday. Will Keane cancelled out Kenwyne Jones’ early strike to ensure the Owls took something from an entertaining clash at Hillsborough. Gray said: “The players gave absolutely everything and I can’t fault their effort and commitment. “We’ve dominated the

second half, we’ve hit the post, we’ve had goalmouth scrambles and we’ve done everything but score the winner. “We gave away an early goal and that meant we were chasing the game but we came back well and I thought we deserved to win.” Gray went on to hail the strength of his bench, with Lewis McGugan and Sergiu Bus coming on to have a positive impact on the contest.

He added: “Sometimes you are only as strong as your bench and we had quality on there today. “Lewis McGugan showed his quality when he came on and his experience. “I was pleased with Sergiu too because that’s his first game for us and he made an impact. “He won us the penalty and I thought it was a penalty because the boy has no reason to go down when he’s about to pull the trigger.”

THE FIRST OF MANY

Will Keane is hoping his maiden professional goal will prove the first of many. The Wednesday loanee from Manchester United slotted home a second half penalty to earn the Owls a 1-1 draw against Cardiff on Saturday. With his side trailing 1-0, Keane had no hesitation in stepping up to do the honours after new recruit Sergiu Bus was felled in the area. Keane said: “It was massive for me to get the goal and I knew I wanted to take the penalty, I was confident.

“When a chance like that I knew I wanted to take it and see it go in the back of the net. Hopefully I can get underway and get a few more goals now. “It was a tough game on Saturday. We knew going into the game it

was going to be another battle. “Before the second half we pushed on and felt that the fans got right behind us and I was glad to get the goal to get us into the game. “It was just unfortunate to not get a winner.”
