The band said, “Come see, come see! The world’s strongest band perform incredible feats live! Marvel as Madness lift an enormous set of polished pop songs high in the air, single handed! The UK’s biggest open air tour ever! Rolling into a town near you, soon.” The tour, which runs from May to September 2015, will take in 19 shows at some of the greatest sporting venues around the country, including racecourses, cricket grounds, rugby and football stadiums. Madness will be performing inimitable quirky pop classics such as “House of Fun”, “Baggy Trousers” and “My Girl”, iconic songs that are guaranteed to draw you in, get you dancing and singing along. The band will also be performing some of their new songs/material, their first new recordings in three years. Kieran Gallagher, executive director at Doncaster Racecourse said the concert was a real coup for the venue: “It’s fantastic to have signed Madness for our Music Live event on June 27. They always put on an incredible show; they really are electrifying to watch and their classic hits appeal to music fans

of all ages, particularly with their revival in recent years since performing as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. With a packed afternoon of top-class racing taking place beforehand it’s going to be a great event for people to come out to enjoy and kickstart their summer. LOCAL TRIBUTE STAR MEETS IDOL AND RETURNS WITH A MESSAGE FOR THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH YORKSHIRE

Tuesdays at 7.30pm Beginners Ballroom & Latin Course Starts Tuesday 14th April

Wednesdays at 8.30pm Beginners Salsa Course

A couple of weeks ago, friend of The Mercury and official number one tribute artist, Lorrie Brown, received a letter from Dame Vera Lynn asking if she would like to pay her a visit. Of course Lorrie, who stars in a show dedicated to Dame Vera, accepted the offer. She thought it would be a great idea to collect messages from the residents of the many residential homes that she performs at, as well as from Crystal Peaks, to take to show Dame Vera Lynn. In the end Lorrie and her partner Gary managed to collect 150 personal messages to take with them. Speaking after her amazing visit Lorrie said: “Dame Vera Lynn was 98 a couple of weeks ago and she was over the moon when we took her the book of messages from the people of South Yorks. There were some really touching messages, some from soldiers who actually saw her sing to them on the front line.” “We spent 3hrs with her and she spoke about her

experiences entertaining the troops abroad. She also thanked us for keeping her music alive.” “We made an impromptu recording of her saying thank you to all the people who wrote and she said how happy she was to have been able to go out and entertain the boys.” “Her daughter, Virginia is putting together a book of Dame Vera's days in Burma and is looking for any photos that people may have of Dame Vera in Burma. She would especially like to hear from you if you had a photograph taken with her.” Here is the message from Dame Vera to the people of South Yorkshire: “I’d like to thank you all, for those wonderful messages that I’ve received. It brought back so many memories of my time out there when I was entertaining the boys. It was a part of my life that I will never ever forget and it is well and truly stored in my memories of the war years. It was a wonderful experience and I was really very touched by the enthusiasm and the reception that I got when I was out there and I do hope that in my small way I took a little bit of home to you.”. Dame Vera is a patron of a charity for families with cerebral palsy, you can learn more about their work online. The web site is at www.dvltrust.org. uk

COMMUNITY FRIENDS CAMPAIGN NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group is continuing its ‘Community Friends’ campaign to recognise and celebrate those who go above and beyond to help their lonely and vulnerable neighbours. • The CCG is urging people to check up on their elderly friends and neighbours as the end of what has been a challenging winter season approaches. • Residents can nominate anyone they know who has supported someone during winter to stay healthy and warm. To find out more about the initiative, visit the CCG’s website and search for ‘Community Friends’ or call 0114 305 1212 to nominate and get involved.

in the areas that the Act impacts on, have decided what needs to change, made plans for those changes and are well on the way to implementing them all. • Some of the key changes relate to the way that the local authority assesses and meets people’s needs. The new eligibility criteria are key to this and require us to focus on the outcomes that people want to achieve and the impact this has on their wellbeing. • We will also have to improve our offer to carers, ensure that the people have access to good quality information and advice, make sure that there is a range of preventative support and services available that maximises people’s independence. • Alongside this there is a requirement to ensure that the market provides a range of good quality, diverse services. • There will also be significant changes to the way that care and support is funded that will come into effect from April 2016; the Department of Health is currently consulting on the regulations and guidance to support those changes. Once we are clear about the detail of the changes this we will inform our plans for what we need to do in Sheffield. There is more information about the Care Act on Sheffield City Council’s website and the Department of Health’s webpages.

NEW ONLINE CHAPTER FOR SHEFFIELDʼS LIBRARIES

Busy people, keen readers and smartphone users are all set to benefit from Sheffield’s new, free eLibrary service which launched last week. In just under a week, 423 e-magazines were checked out, as were 258 e-books. From JRR Tolkien to David Starkey, from Philip Larkin to CS Lewis, there’s something for everyone with more than 1,700 books to choose from. And it’s not just book lovers that will benefit: keen runners, chefs and bee keepers can choose from more than 300 magazine subscriptions including BBC Good Food, Top Gear and Runners World. Sheffield City Council’s new eLibrary service is available, free of charge for library members, for anyone with a smartphone, tablet, laptop or e-reader. The council wants to encourage new library users and is hoping to attract more people to its online service. Nick Partridge, Service Manager for Libraries, Archives and Information Service at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is a brilliant addition to our library service and means people can access books, magazines and other electronic material on the go, or at home. “I know people have really busy lives, and are now interested in reading things on their phone or tablet, as well as in print. “I’m really excited that we’re now able to offer more from our libraries and to even more people. I’d like as many people as possible to try out our new eLibrary service which provides online access to e-books, magazines, e-audio books and online tools for study, business and leisure. There’s even a crossword solver!” People can sign up to the new, free service online at www.sheffield.gov.uk/elibrary or in any library in Sheffield. Books, magazines and other material can be downloaded or viewed online. The magazines can be kept forever and the e-books will automatically disappear after the loan period. This means no late fees for customers.

CRICKET GREAT theSWAPS BOWLING FOR A BREW Former English Cricketer expansion of research studies, work of Weston Park and Yorkshire County Cricket Club Captain, Darren Gough is asking people to pop the kettle on to help raise vital funds for the Cancer Charity. Charity Patron, Darren Gough is encouraging people from across the region to come together for a cuppa and cake during the month of May as part of the charity’s dedicated Time for Tea party month, which last year raised an incredible £36,000. Now into its second year, Time for Tea is a fundraising initiative which invites people to host their very own tea party whilst raising money to support

Hospital. Darren Gough is one of the first people to submit a ‘Mug Shot’ for the campaign via social media, which will appear alongside fellow ‘Time for Tea’ supporters on the dedicated web page. Darren said, “It is an honour to support Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and make Time for Tea for the benefit of cancer patients across South Yorkshire and beyond.” “As a Yorkshire man myself, I’d urge anyone who enjoys a ‘cuppa and cake’ to pop the kettle on this May and brew up vital funds for this local cause.” “I’m showing my support by submitting my very own ‘mugshot’ and asking others to do the same. It’s simple- sign up for Timznd tag #TimeforTeaparty #mugshot, then nominate your friends to do the same” Throughout 2015 the charity will fund various projects to enable the continued improvement of Weston Park Hospital; including the

improving the way cancer treatments are delivered and supporting the ongoing care provisions of patients and their families affected by cancer. Last year, over 150 tea parties were organised across the region, from small community gatherings to large scale corporate get-togethers. This year, alongside Darren Gough, a host of famous faces are posting their very own ‘Mug Shot’ on social media and asking others to make Time for Tea and do the same. Downton Abbey’s, Allen Leech and fellow cricketer, Michael Vaughan are all helping to increase the ‘tea-total’ as well as Olympian, Sarah Stevenson who supported the campaign last year after both her mum and dad were treated at Weston Park Hospital. 2003 Strictly Come Dancing Champion, Darren, continued, “Whether it’s a catch up with friends or a family get together, Time for Tea provides the perfect excuse to enjoy a tea break whilst supporting those fighting cancer.” “It’s an absolutely brilliant way of raising money for this specialised cancer hospital and you can do it from your own home!” We need to raise over £1.8 million this year to enable the funding of committed and new projects that will keep Weston Park Hospital at the forefront of cancer treatment. With over 75,000 people across the region fighting cancer today, it is essential that support for the regions only cancer hospital continues. Charity Fundraiser, Sarah Cross said, “We are delighted that Darren is joining us this year for Time for Tea and encouraging others to do the same, either by hosting their own tea party or by making a donation with a #mugshot in support of the campaign.” “Whether you’re sitting down at work for a morning tea break or organising a community tea party in your local church, we’d love everyone to clink cups throughout May and make a life-changing donation for this local cause.” Join us on Facebook or by using the hashtag #TimeforTeapart and submit your very own #mugshot To sign up for Time for Tea visitwww.timeforteaparty.com or call the Cancer Charity office on 0114 2265370.

As compelling today as it was at its inception over forty years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar has some of musical

theatre’s most legendary songs from I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Everything’s Alright, and Gethsemane through to, of course, Superstar. Produced by Bill Kenwright and the creative team behind numerous blockbuster musicals, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the world’s oldest story with the superb theatricality they have brought to Evita, Joseph, Cabaret, Blood Brothers and Whistle

Down the Wind to mention only a few.

Leading performer Glenn Carter is set to return as Jesus, a role he has played in the West End, on Broadway and on film. Welsh Baritone Rhydian Roberts, joins the cast as Pontius Pilot and Starring as Mary Magdalene is Rachel Adedaji. Jesus Christ Superstar is playing at the Sheffield Lyceum Theatre 20 April – 2 May and we’ve got two pairs of tickets to giveaway! For information on tour venues and tickets please visit www.kenwright.com Terms and conditions apply. Prize is valid 20 April 2015 only. Subject to availability. Prize is as stated and cannot be transferred or exchanged, no cash alternative will be offered.

NEW SIGNS POINT THE WAY TO CITY’S ANTIQUES QUARTER It’s the place to go for shoppers seeking one-off antiques and original designs. And now Sheffield Antiques Quarter has been put on the map with new brown signs to illustrate its cultural significance. The quarter, home to six antiques centres and several independent shops, takes in parts of Abbeydale Road, Broadfield Road, London Road and Queens Road, including a riverside walk along the Sheaf. The aim of the signage, as well as new public art and banners, is to raise the profile of the successful and growing antiques quarter, which is home to independent traders selling everything from antiques, retro and vintage items through to military memorabilia and artwork. Information points are set to be established in the area, along with projects from locally-based artists including mosaics, lettering and mural work on key buildings and gable ends. Banners are currently in the

A Proper Country Pub!

To be in with a chance of winning a pair of tickets to see Jesus Christ Superstar at The Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield just answer the following question and send your entry with a daytime telephone number to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk before Wednesday 15th April.

process of being created, and brown tourism signage has now been put up at four key points at the entrances to the quarter. The idea for creating a designated antiques quarter with its own identity was the brainchild of Hendrika Stephens, now chair of the Sheffield Antiques Quarter group. She said: “Three years ago, I had a gallery space in the antiques quarter and was trying to get the business to promote itself. I then walked around to talk to other businesses in the area and thought, why aren’t we all coming together? “The area had been informally known as an antiques quarter for many years, so it just needed formalising. Sheffield City Council were very supportive and it all went from there. “The area covered by the Sheffield Antiques Quarter goes all the way up to Abbeydale Road’s junction with Plymouth Road at one corner, another corner

is the Sheffield Auction house in Chesterfield Road, another corner at Haggler’s Corner in Queen’s Road and the final one is near the Rude Shipyard café in Abbeydale Road. “The quarter is therefore quite big and there is plenty of room for new businesses to start up and thrive. Just since we started, we’ve seen 20 to 25 new businesses open up on Abbeydale Road alone. The antiques quarter has a really positive impact on the local economy.” “The signs make the point that the quarter is here, it’s a destination, we’re proud of it and we want to keep it here.” More information on the Sheffield Antiques Quarter is available on the website here: sheffieldantiquesquarter.co.uk

It’s official...spring has finally sprung. No longer do we have to don our michellin man style coats or look like extras in Arctic Mission. It’s time we cast away our snow boots in exchange for flip flops, trading in wooly hats for straw hats and bikinis. Hallelujah. In celebration of you new found love for all things summery, it therefore seems fitting to check out American folk performer Sea Sick Steve at Sheffield’s O2 Academy on 16th April. Amen to that! Sea Sick Steve personifies all things rock ‘n’ roll. Growing up with a father who pioneered the boogie wookie piano genre, Sea Sick was always destined for a career within the arts. Almost sixty years later, the California crooner has released seven studio albums, with his most recent, “Sonic Soul Surfer” landing itself at number 4 on the UK album charts in March 2015. With “Bring It On” and “Summertime Boy” beautifully crafted lead singles from Sea Sick’s most successful release since 2009, glowing reviews showered the musicians work. From humble beginnings back in his hometown of Oakland, Sea Sick has lived and breathed music.

If you have any news, reviews or events you would like featuring please email info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk

In the 1960’s, he toured as a session musician, creating strong friendships within the blues scene, notably with that of starlet Joni Mitchell. Following on from this, Sea Sick tried his hand as a recording engineer, producing the mighty debut album, “This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About” in 1996 for Modest Mouse. Heavily active within the production field, Sea Sick however still had a burning passion to create his own blues music. Throughout the 90’s, the songwriter could be found busking the metro stations of Paris whilst building up his unique repertoire of heart felt melodies. This quickly developed into his debut album, “Cheap” in 2004 released through Bronzerat Records. Reminiscing about his early life and exposing his emotionally riddled career, the album set the foundations for the star to rise. “I Started Out With Nothing And I Still Got Most Of It Left” in 2008 followed, proceeded by “Man From Another Time” 2009 and “You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks” in 2011, each successfully charting across the world. Sea Sick Steve is a master of his craft, performing at Sheffield’s O2 Academy on 16th April. See the website www. o2academysheffield.co.uk for all the details.

TRAMLINES 2015, WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR... Preview: Tramlines 2015 By Kt Evans

Thank the almighty Lord for Tramlines Festival. Well and truly planting Sheffield firmly on the summer festival circuit, this year’s event is running from 24th – 26th July 2015 in over 100 venues throughout the city centre. In case you missed the gigantic announcements within the last few weeks, we thought it fitting to give you a Tramlines update, because quite frankly...we simply cannot wait!

Basement Jaxx. A group who need absolutely no introduction, these superstar DJ’s have headlined Glastonbury, sold over three million albums and won a catalogue of awards. The duo’s seventh studio album, “Junto” was released on 24th August 2014, landing itself a number 3 on the UK Dance Charts. With glowing reviews from the likes of NME,

FRIDAY 10TH APRIL 7pm Start

Rolling Stones and Clash Magazine, track “Power To The People” took over two years to record and produce...talk about having the patience of a saint! Headlining Tramlines Festival this summer, we have a sneaking suspicion this is going to be the most infamous set of the festival ever. Joining Basement Jaxx, Manchester legends The Charlatans. Sighting that they’ve “overcome death, arrest, Britpop and bankruptcy to release eleven studio albums, including seven UK top tens, retaining a fanatical fan base who still clamour for album tracks rather than any of the band’s eleven top 20 singles,” The Charlatans are certainly a forced to be reckoned with. Also added to Tramlines Festival 2015 is the former Streets front man, Mike Skinner. Having won an Ivor Novello award, a Brit Award alongside altering everyone’s perception of the UK music scene, Mike now pushes things forward with his genre bending DJ sets. Legends within the British Punk Scene, Buzzcocks are to be gracing Sheffield’s Tramlines Festival this summer. Part of a pioneering group of bands who pushed forward the Punk wave back in the 1970’s to include The Clash and The Sex Pistols, the Manchester four piece have released nine studio albums since 1978...and certainly don’t look to be stopping any time soon! Thrilling audiences for over thirty years, Buzzcocks are unquestionably a British music institution. The line-up also includes: Wu – Tang Clan, Martha Reeves, Billy Bragg, The Sugar Hill Gang, Kate Tempest, Slaves, Surgeon, Rolo Tomassi, Dutch Uncles, Melle Mel and Scorpio and many more. Check out the website www.tramslines.org.uk for the full line-up including ticket information. Tramlines 2015 runs from 24th – 26th July.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

A crazy week this time, with a visit to the superb Northern Angling Show (where I picked up my new Sonik Sports SKS landing net!) which was a huge success despite torrential rain which made getting there quite difficult! I was pleased to see the show packed with anglers, and well supported by big brands (and smaller independents) with plenty of ‘celebrity’ on show; a fine addition to the packed show calendar which will only get better as each year passes. I managed to grab a chat with the editorial team at Carp-Talk which always offers a good insight into what is hot, (read my columns in the magazine every week!) I met up with a few old friends, made some new ones and saw some exciting offerings which are either already on the market, or coming soon! Watch out for StarFlite stainless if you need some stylish bankware, check out FishEye cameras if you want to know what’s going on at the sharp end, and be prepared for some awesome new clothing from Fortis, the eyewear specialists! There was so much to see! On the bank, I’ve been looking at the COG system which has been pioneered by Korda recently. The Centre Of Gravity lead, and the way they are attached, alters the mechanics of the rig, allegedly to provide a better hooking effect. I’m not really huge on rig mechanics, instead preferring to rely on a sharp hook and proper placement, but these do warrant further investigation... Some years ago, I completed a feature for Angling Times magazine at Alton Towers. Fishing the main lake in the shadow of the imposing ruins, a colleague and I enjoyed several hours sport using hot dog sausages and other baits to catch a number of pleasing fish. During the session, I witnessed a good sized common, firmly hooked in the bottom lip, using the usual six to eight inch length of hooklink and position of the weight to try and dislodge the hook... the important thing I noticed was that there was absolutely no indication at the alarm despite the fish spending a good five minutes with the hook in its mouth! Since then, I’ve always tried to use the shortest hooklink I can get away with... Think about it; you only know you have a bite when the lead is moved (if using a clip system) and if the hooklink is eight inches long, that means the fish has a circle of SIXTEEN inches in which to move and try

to shift the hook before you know anything about it! It might not sound impressive, but it offers an awful lot of leeway if your hookpoint is slightly blunted, the angle of the hook is off by a degree or two, or the fish is able to move to a snag? Having witnessed the clearly defined efforts of the big common to escape (it did by the way), I now try to use heavier leads, shorter links and, if possible, a running rig on a tight line to give me an indication at the earliest possible time. A four or six inch circle makes it much harder for a fish to move and eject the hook, and a running rig gives no opportunity to use the lead as a fulcrum, so must surely be better to use? The only disadvantage of the running rig that I can see is that the weight of the lead makes no difference to the hooking efficiency of the rig; there is no way the weight of the lead can prick the hook home, which is why I chose to look at the COG lead. I like the idea of using the heaviest part of the lead to drive the hook home. Using the full weight of the lead at the earliest opportunity to force the point of the hook to bite does make sense and putting a recess into the midst of the lead is designed to do just that. It is the first time I’ve used them, so I’m still getting to grips with the concept, but the theory seems to hold water; a super short hooklink, perhaps with a pop up attached, will give the carp no chance to move off the lead before the hook point catches, so I’ll persevere for a bit to see what happens. I have found a glaring disadvantage though; what if the lead lands with the recess facing the lake bed? Surely that completely removes any advantage and really mucks up any presentation? So far, I’ve used them only in the margins, within a rod length of the bank, where I can see it so I know it’s fishing effectively. I like the look of them, I like the fact that I’m using the heaviest part of the weight to set the hook, so I’ll give them a fair crack of the whip before I make a final decision.... watch this space....

MILLERS STEP CLOSER TO SAFETY ROTHERHAM UNITED took a major step towards Championship survival as they edged a vital 1-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion thanks to Matt Derbyshire’s eighth goal of the season. The Millers opened a seven-point gap between themselves and Millwall, who command the third relegation place, following the victory earned thanks to Derbyshire’s first-half strike with just five games to go. Following their Good Friday defeat at the hands of Birmingham City, the Millers rang the changes for their hosting of Chris Hughton’s Brighton and Hove Albion. Derby youngster Farrend Rawson returned at the heart of the Millers defence at the expense of club skipper Craig Morgan, who was ruled out because of suspension after accumulating ten bookings for the season. Icelandic international Kari Arnason made a welcome return to the fold to the Millers engine room after his two-match suspension as Lee Frecklington had to settle for a substitutes berth while Paul Green took the skipper armband as Charlton loanee Lawrie Wilson was not part of the matchday squad. Gaffer Steve Evans also reshuffled his attacking options as Jordan Bowery was handed an opportunity to impress partnering St Andrew’s scorer Derbyshire as Derby loanee Conor Sammon was also omitted from the squad. The home side had the first sight of goal when Emi Martinez’s punt upfield saw Bowery get the better of his marker in the aerial dual and Ben Pringle swung a snap effort with his weaker right foot which was straight down the throat of one-time Millers loanee David Stockdale. In the Seagulls first foray of note, Kazenga Lua Lua fired an effort from distance which stung the palms of Martinez before the home side stunned the visitors by making the breakthrough with eight minutes on the clock. There looked little danger when the Millers switched play to the right flank but Bowery showed fleet of foot to work a yard of space before playing a tantalising centre into the danger area which saw Derbyshire get infront of his marker before calmly steering his volley past a helpless Stockdale into the bottom corner of the net. The Millers looked to consolidate their advantage in the early stages and former Miller Chris O’Grady had Albion’s next shot at goal when he cleverly spun his marker on the edge of the box following Dale Stephens threaded ball but he fluffed his lines when his dragged effort failed to trouble the home goal. Minutes later, the Millers squandered an opportunity to double their advantage when Pringle swung an inviting free-kick into the box which saw Kirk Broadfoot rise highest to plant a dangerous header into the six-yard box which looked inchperfect for the advancing Bowery, but the ex-Villa striker could not control his header as it ballooned over the bar despite the goal being at his mercy. Just before the half-hour mark, Richie Smallwood epitomised Rotherham’s tenacity in the early stages to win possession on halfway before Pringle floated a delicate ball over the Albion rearguard which almost saw Derbyshire race clear on goal but unfortunately, the ex-Forest striker was unable to get the ball under his spell as the retreating defence snuffed out the danger. Minutes later, Pringle and Derbyshire were again in the thick of the action when the former threaded

a ball into the box which saw Green step-over into the path of Derbyshire, who showed great awareness to pull the ball back into the path of Green, who had a glimpse of goal but he failed to make a clean connection as his effort dribbled wide of the target. In the next phase of play, Pringle became the first to see yellow for cynically hauling down Lua Lua in full flow before Rohan Ince soon joined him in the book for tripping Green, who spun smartly following fine work by Arnason. Following the restart, the Seagulls came out on the frontfoot and Joe Bennett’s wicked corner had home hearts’ fluttering as it fizzed across the goalmouth with no visiting raider able to turn the ball goalwards before Smallwood’s superb tackle prevented sub Leon Best from sneaking behind the home rearguard. Moments later, Beram Kayal became the next to incur the wrath of the referee as he was carded for preventing Martinez from clearing the ball before Kayal almost went from villain to hero as he superbly turned Rawson to race clear on goal and although he won the footrace with the Rotherham defence, his touch was heavy enabling Martinez to smother the ball and although Kayal was first to the rebound, he was crowded out by the retreating defenders. Kayal was in the thick of the action and in Albion’s next attack he was felled under the challenge of Green, which saw the Rotherham captain cautioned for his late tackle before the visitors wasted the resultant free-kick which was bravely blocked by the rampaging Broadfoot. The visitors were piling on the pressure and Best pounced on the loose ball to fizz a cross which saw Bowery in attempting to clear miscue his clearance as it narrowly cleared the home crossbar to the relief of the AESSEAL New York Stadium faithful. Bowery almost made an impression at the other end as he latched onto Derbyshire’s pass to try his luck from distance but his skimming drive failed to trouble Stockdale before Arnason blazed a header over following Pringle’s deep centre in the next home attack. Minutes later, Jack Hunt’s purposeful run from the right touchline ended with a bobbling effort which forced Stockdale into a smart save before the visitors had their ‘keeper to thank for keeping them in the game when Danny Lafferty embarked

on a run which left Lua Lua and Bruno Saltor in his wake before the Northern Irish international presented Derbyshire with an opportunity to bear down on goal but Stockdale read his intentions with a point-blank save. Moments later, Lafferty showed his defensive prowess with a superb last-ditch header before Mustapha Carayol struck an effort into the side netting after Martinez failed to deal with an Albion centre. Sub Craig Mackail-Smith almost made an immediate impact from the bench as he was firstly inches away from connecting with Kayal’s sweeping cross before the Scottish international scooped an effort harmlessly wide from distance following Broadfoot’s weak header. With time running out for the visitors, Rawson threw his body on the line to block Bennett’s goalbound effort and preserve Rotherham’s slender lead in the process before the home side had faint appeals for a spot-kick when Derbyshire tumbled in the box as he looked to latch onto sub Danny Ward’s downward header but the referee waved away home protests. In the dying minutes, Ward had an opportunity to ease home nerves when he got on the end of Arnason’s perfectly-weighted pass to drill an effort from an acute angle which beat the outstretched hand of Stockdale but it fizzed the wrong side of the upright before Derbyshire almost capitalised on a weak backpass to make it two but Stockdale stood tall his toe-poked effort.

guide his header on target. Just before the break Curtis Main so nearly gave Rovers the lead with a fabulous 25-yard strike, but it cannoned off the crossbar, Coppinger attempted the diving header, before Harry Forrester went down, but the flag was up for offside. Bradford took the lead ten minutes into the second half, Morais whipped a fine ball to the back post towards Billy Clarke, Andy Butler cleared off the line and Gary MacKenzie prodded in scrappily as Rovers failed to deal with the lose ball. Rovers almost hit back immediately, Dean Furman going close with a great strike from the edge of the box, but Ben Williams in the Bradford goal denied him. Things then went from bad to worse for Rovers, on the counter attack City split the Doncaster defence open and James Hanson was away, he showed great strength to keep Luke McCullough at bay before unselfishly teeing up Clarke who fired the ball past Stephen Bywater to double the Bantams lead. Liam Mandeville came off the bench to make his Doncaster Rovers debut and the lively youngster almost pulled Rovers a goal back, curling an effort from 20 yards, but he couldn’t get the better of Williams. Bradford sealed the win in the fifth minute of added time, a slip by Reece Wabara allowed City substitute Tony McMahon to go through on goal before he coolly slotted past Bywater to put a hammer blow in Rovers’ playoff hunt.

Three second half goals ensured Bradford City took the spoils in the Good Friday Yorkshire derby at the Keepmoat Stadium, putting a huge dent in Doncaster Rovers’ playoff hopes. Captain James Coppinger returned to the starting line-up, after missing the last three matches through injury, along with Jonson Clarke-Harris who scored the winner last time out against Coventry City. Inside 18 minutes Doncaster had a penalty shout, Coppinger whipped in a great ball for Clarke-Harris at the back post and he appeared to be bundled over by Stephen Darby, however the referee waved away the protests. Bradford were next to go close, Filipe Morais showed great skill to get to the by-line, before dinking the ball up to James Hanson, but the forward couldn’t direct his header on target. Rovers were then presented with another great chance to take the lead, Richie Wellens and James Coppinger both fired the ball low across the face of goal, but there was nobody could get on the end of them. Clarke-Harris then had a fine opportunity, Richie Wellens found him at the back post, but he couldn’t

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD UNITED

BLADES NEWS2014/15 LARGE TRAVELLING BLADES CROWD SEE DERBY VICTORY A total of 5,322 Blades fans - the biggest away following of the campaign - enjoyed the thoroughly deserved victory at Barnsley on Saturday. Steven Davies scored his first United goal with a towering header and Jason Holt added his third in as many games as Barnsley’s nine-match unbeaten run - including draws with the top two in the division - was ended. The clean sheet was deserved and the Blades players received a tremendous ovation as they left the Oakwell pitch. Barnsley-born defender Kennedy returned to United’s starting line-up for the Easter Saturday derby. His inclusion, for Baxter, who dropped to the bench, saw Basham

revert to a midfield role. Scougall and McEveley returned to the bench. Skipper Brayford encouraged noise from the away following before kick-off and the fans duly obliged early on. The first chance, strangely, was a header from one of the smallest men on the pitch and Holt met Flynn’s cross neatly but goalkeeper Wildsmith was well placed. Barnsley’s efforts in the opening 20 minutes were restricted to outside the box. Hourihane’s freekick hit the wall, whilst the follow up from Pearson was blocked. Following a move from right to left, Scowen fired wide, this time at the near post. United’s first corner, from Coutts, caused Barnsley problems.

DAVIES REFLECTS ON BARNSLEY Steven Davies, with his first for the Club put United in front before the break and Hearts loanee Jason Holt made sure of an important three points with his third goal in as

many matches after the interval as the Blades brought to an end the Tykes impressive ninematch unbeaten run. Reflecting on a job well, Garner remarked: “It was a magnificent

Following a melee, Holt’s shot was almost deflected in by Murphy, who appeared to be bundled over in the next phase but referee Madley had not taken up a good position. In a scrappy, even first half the better of the opportunities were coming as a result of deliveries from Harris. His deep cross on 25 minutes saw Davies peel off his marker but his header clipped the top of the crossbar and then another ball from the left-back saw Basham look favourite to score but his clip was deflected wide by Cranie. John was the next to clear as Barnsley were put under pressure, he kept out Flynn’s shot following a run down the left channel by Davies, who was heavily

involved moments later as the pressure told. On 42 minutes, after a coming together of both sets of players was diffused by the referee, Freeman whipped in a free-kick and DAVIES towered above everyone and planted an unstoppable header over Wildsmith and into the top corner. Davies celebrated his first Blades goal by running the length of the field to enjoy the moment with the travelling fans. A second almost followed when Kennedy met a Coutts corner but John cleared off the line at the back post and right on the stroke of half-time, Barnsley had a half-chance to level but Hourihane’s shot was deflected over by Freeman.

performance and a thoroughly deserved victory against a Barnsley side who have been in terrific form since Lee Johnson’s arrival. “We were comfortable throughout the the game and that is some achievement in a local derby, especially away from home, but we

wanted to show our intent and get in their faces from the off. “The last thing we told the players was to be positive, take the game to them and get that all important first goal.” Garner was keen to heap the praise on both of United’s scorers and concluded by stressing the importance of the victory against their South Yorkshire rivals. He added: “We had created a couple of good opportunities prior to scoring but it was a fabulous header from Steven Davies. “Steven has made a real positive impact since he joined us, but it is good he has got his first goal, because as a striker it can play on your mind when you haven’t scored for your new club. “Jason Holt has scored three in three now and all of them have been good strikes, this one flew in from the edge of the box.”

Within 20 seconds of the restart, Flynn shot wide for the Blades, whilst it soon became clear that Davies was struggling and he was replaced by ex-Tyke Done on 54 minutes. Barnsley won a couple of corners and kept possession in midfield but United also looked a threat on the break. Brayford picked up the game’s first booking for foul on Scowen but the Blades went close from the resulting collect and delivery by Howard, the subsequent free-kick from Harris was at the wall, though. The home side made a double change but within a minute they were further behind. From a Harris throw, Basham flicked on and after the Tykes half-cleared, HOLT was waiting on the edge of the box to

fire back an unstoppable volley into the bottom corner. He also headed to celebrate with the Blades fans but was booked for his displaying his joy. United’s second goal silenced three sides of Oakwell and the home players offered very little in terms of attacking threat. The Blades kept the ball well and nullified any potential threat well away from Howard’s goal. Scougall returned to first team action for the last few minutes, replacing Holt, and Doyle took over from Flynn. Four minutes of added time saw the Blades keep possession professionally and there were no dangers in the final moments before United left Oakwell with three points firmly in the bag.

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

OWLS NEWS2014/15 OWLS SUFFER DIELNA BLOW PROMOTION CHASERS PROVE TOO MUCH FOR OWLS A trip to promotionchasing and in-form Norwich always looked a tough task for the Owls and so it proved on Easter Monday at Carrow Road. A brace from Bradley Johnson in a scintilating first half did the damage as the Canaries strengthened their elevation credentials. And it was no more than Norwich deserved, taking a grip on the game from the first whistle. Wednesday did create chances themselves but few compared to a home side showing the right form at the most important stage of the season. A frantic opening was bossed by the Canaries and only some stout defending kept them at bay. Filipe Melo, making his first start for the Owls, threw himself in front of a Stephen Whittaker drive and Norwich had a penalty appeal turned down moments later when Claude Dielna tangled with Cameron Jerome. Alexander Tettey forced Keiren Westwood into a diving save, Tettey smashed another effort narrowly off target, before the Owls countered and carved two chances in as many minutes. First, Lloyd Isgrove burst down the right and

shot across John Ruddy but wide, then Caolan Lavery had a clear sight on goal eight yards out from a Chris Maguire cross but headed over. Norwich promptly resumed control and Whittaker went close following a neat four-man move on the half-hour. And on 34 minutes, the hosts took the lead. More pressure saw a deep cross from the right land right on the head of Johnson, who directed a well-placed effort beyond Westwood into the far corner. It was one-way traffic to the break and just as it seemed the Owls would hold out and have the time to re-group, Norwich doubled their lead. Dorrans sent a corner straight into the heart of the danger zone and Johnson drilled past a

clutch of players inside the six-yard box to make it two. Stuart Gray shuffled his pack at half time, sending on Atdhe Nuhiu to lead the line, while Lewis Buxton replaced Marnick Vermijl. And they did start the second period brightly but Norwich played with the full comfort of that two-goal cushion. Indeed, Alex Neil’s side barely laid a glove on Wednesday throughout the second 45 but had enough of the ball to prevent any kind of comeback from their opponents. This win took the Canaries into the automatic promotion equation and based on the quality of a first half performance that simply overpowered the visitors, few would argue against them staying there.

Sheffield Wednesday academy product Brad Beatson has been offered his first professional contract at Hillsborough. The central defender has worked his way successfully through the ranks and impressed for both the Under-18s and Under-21s. Beatson joins Franck Betra and Jack Stobbs from the same class to graduate through the Owls’ youth system. Academy manager Dean Ramsdale said: “Brad has been fantastic this year and an ever-present for the Under-18s and

stepped up at times to the Under-21s. “Under-21 football has been a challenge but we have seen a lot of development in him and believe there is more to come.” Of the 18-year-old, Ramsdale added: “He goes about his work very diligently, works hard and is the first one in the building. “He wants to win every game and has that hunger and passion. That was evident again on Saturday in the 18s’ win over Sheffield United. “He has led the side by example all season and

I’m very pleased for him. “It’s always a tough decision and this year more so than ever because the group have been relatively successful this season. “Unfortunately we can’t sign them all. There is a lot of talent in the group and I’m sure a number of them will go on to have good careers in the game. “But we have set the bar extremely high and believe Brad, along with Franck and Jack have the ability to make that next step.”

GRAY RUES MISSED CHANCES

Stuart Gray reflected on two key chances missed by Wednesday in the 2-0 defeat to Norwich on Monday. With the game goalless in the first half, the Owls spurned opportunities through Lloyd Isgrove and Caolan Lavery that Gray said could have changed the game: “This game is all about taking your chances and we didn’t take ours. “We had two clear chances but didn’t trouble the keeper and had we taken one of them, we might well be talking about a different outcome to the game. “But credit Norwich, they took their chances, they are a very good side and I think overall they deserved the win.” The Owls’ head coach

insisted Wednesday were not at their best at both ends of the pitch and demanded an improvement for the visit of Charlton on Saturday. He added: “Our defending was not good enough today. “We stood off them, we didn’t get our challenges

in and you can’t allow a side like Norwich the kind of room we did on the ball. “Football is a simple game when you get it right in both boxes and we didn’t do that today. “I have said that to the players and I have told them I want to see a big improvement for Charlton on Saturday.”
