THURSDAY - THE COUNTRY DECIDES Sheffield electors are being reminded that Thursday is the day to go and vote by Sheffield City Council’s Elections team. Thursday 7th May sees elections both for your local MP and your local councillors, in what is being widely predicted as the closest election in many years. “By now, everyone in Sheffield who’s on the electoral roll should have received a polling card, showing which polling station they need to go to in order to vote,” said John Mothersole, Returning Officer for the local
elections in Sheffield. “All polling stations are open from 7am in the morning until 10pm, so you have all day to go and vote. You don’t need to take your polling card with you to vote, so don’t worry if you don’t have it with you when you call in, although sometimes it can be helpful to have it with you. “If you have a postal vote and you haven’t already posted it, you can hand it in to any polling station up to 10pm on Thursday. If you do have a postal vote, then please take responsibility for it. You need to complete it
personally and follow all the instructions. There is a voluntary code of conduct for handling postal votes, which candidates and agents have signed up to.” If you still have any queries about voting call Sheffield City Council’s elections helpline on 0114 273 4093 or visit www. sheffield.gov.uk/ elections. The local results will also be shown on the web site after they have been announced on Friday

THE HUMAN LEAGUE TO KICKSTART MUSIC LIVE AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE Doncaster Racecourse is gearing up to host Sheffield formed electronic new wave band The Human League, after an evening of racing, on Saturday 16 May. The trio, comprising vocalist and songwriter Philip Oakley, the only constant band member since 1977, and long-serving female vocalists Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley will take to the stage following a packed seven race card at the Town Moor venue, South Yorkshire’s premier racecourse. The three-piece band, which evolved into a hugely successful synthpop band throughout the 1980s, has racked up five albums and eight UK Top 10 singles, selling more than 20 million records in total in a career spanning five decades. They are set to perform a raft of hit singles from their back catalogue including Don’t You Want Me, Human and Together in Electric Dreams in front of racecourse crowds. Commenting on the news that Human League are set to kick off the Music Live series at Doncaster Racecourse on May 16, Kieron Gallagher, executive director, said: “The Human League was formed in Sheffield back in the late 70s so it is only fitting that they get the Music Live series underway here in South Yorkshire on 16 May. Hit singles like Don’t You Want Me and Together in Electric Dreams have
stood the test of time and I am sure that they will get the crowds singing along as they soak up the atmosphere late into the evening here at Town Moor. “We have a fantastic line up of musical entertainment to compliment the top sporting action over the summer months with Madness, UB40 and DJs Jo Whiley and Vernon Kay all set to entertain the crowds. We have one remaining act to announce imminently who I’m sure won’t disappoint.” As part of the Music Live series Doncaster Racecourse is also set to play host to Madness on Saturday 27 June with another big name act soon to be announced for Saturday 15 August. The venue will also welcome UB40 who will perform after racing on Ladbrokes Derby Day on Saturday 06 June and it has recently announced its first DJ Live event featuring Jo Whiley and Vernon Kay on Saturday 01 August. Tickets for their summer evening of racing and The Human League live performance are now on sale priced from £33 per person for the Grandstand Enclosure (when booked online). The first race gets underway at 5.30pm and the last at 8.30pm with the live music performance following afterwards. For further information about Doncaster Racecourse or to book tickets call 01302 304200 or go to www. doncaster-racecourse.co.uk.
COMPETITION To be in with a chance of winning a pair of Grandstand tickets to see The Human League live after racing at Doncaster Racecourse just answer this following question and send your entry with a daytime telephone number to info@ mercurynewspaper.co.uk before Mon 11th May.
Winner drawn at Random. Closing date: Monday 11th May.

“This house,” said the estate agent, “has both its good points and its bad points. “The disadvantages are that there is a chemical plant one street south and a slaughterhouse a street north.” “What are the advantages?” inquired the prospective buyer. “The advantage is that you can always tell which way the wind is blowing.”

A beggar approaches a grandmother at the beach with his hands out. “Please madam,” the poor man pleads, “I haven’t eaten all day.” “Good,” says the grandmother. “Now you won’t have to worry about cramps when you go for a swim.” A week after John bought a bull, he complained to his friend, “All that bull does is eat grass. Won’t even look at a cow.” “Take him to the vet,” his friend suggested. The next week, John is much happier. “The vet gave him some pills, and the bull serviced all of my cows!” he told his pal. “Then he broke through the fence and bred with all my neighbor’s cows! He’s like a machine!” “What kind of pills were they?” asked the friend. “I don’t know, but they’ve got a peppermint taste.” A weeping woman bursts into her hypnotherapist’s office and declares, “Doctor, I have been faithful to my husband for 15 years, but yesterday I broke that trust and had an affair! The guilt is killing me. I just want to forget that it ever happened!” The hypnotherapist shakes his head. “Not again …”

Let Me Entertain You... (2 HOUR SHOW) 50s & 60s GOLDEN OLDIES LET ME SING ALL YOUR FAVOURITES Although you usually prefer things to be clear cut, they may not be so this week. MOVE MORE IN SHEFFIELD GREEN COMMISSION HEARINGS What is Move More? Move More is a city-wide public health programme which aims to make it easier for everyone in Sheffield to be physically active as part of everyday life. The vision of Move More is for Sheffield to become the most active City in the UK by 2020 and as a result see meaningful improvement in the health, wellbeing and quality of life of individuals, families and communities living in the city. Move More is therefore about you and people like you living in Sheffield and we’d love you to join in and help make Sheffield the UK’s most active city.
The Move More Plan If Sheffield is to achieve the ambitious goal of becoming the most active City in the UK by 2020 it is going to take time and effort. To help guide the way, a 5-year plan has been written - unsurprisingly called ‘the Move More plan’ which sets-out how communities, schools, workplaces and environments can enable the residents of Sheffield to become more physically active. The Move More plan was co-produced with over 300 individuals representing over 100 different organisations in Sheffield. It considers some of the evidence as to why ‘moving more’ is an important part of everyday life Who are Move More? Move More is a city-wide partnership involving; the Voluntary Sector, the NHS, both Universities, the Local Authority, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, and Sheffield International Venues (SIV). Move More is therefore not an organisation in its own right. Move More aims to coordinate activities and projects that already exists in Sheffield rather than create new initiatives, projects and programmes. Move More Outcomes We have identified 6 key outcomes that represent what we want to achieve through the Move More plan. These aims are aligned with the Health and Wellbeing Board in terms of improving population health. They are: • Outcome 1: Empowered Communities • Outcome 2: Active Environments • Outcome 3: Active People & Families • Outcome 4: Physical activity as Medicine • Outcome 5: Active Schools and Active pupils • Outcome 6: Active Workplaces and an Active Workforce The Approach to Move More The Move More plan will take a bottomup, value-based, whole systems approach (an approach that considers all age groups

and socio-demographics within the City) to creating a culture of physical activity within Sheffield. We want to raise individual’s participation in physical activity or sport to 150minutes a week or more We want to tackle the inequalities in terms of physical activity participation between the least and the most affluent areas of the city by ensuring everyone, regardless of age, gender, language, ethnicity, economic status or ability, should have accessible, safe, convenient and affordable choices for physical activity. To achieve the most active city in the UK by 2020, the Move More plan is based on 12 principles which are described in the infographic in Our Vision section. A Challenge to Move More There is strong evidence that creating a culture of physical activity in Sheffield could lead to over 600 premature deaths being prevented each year. That’s friends, relatives, colleagues, neighbours and members of our communities in Sheffield sharing life together longer. It is perhaps less well publicised that physical activity can: • improve the educational attainment of our children, • help to reduce anti-social behaviour, • build self-esteem across the life-span, • contribute to urban regeneration and help increase work productivity, quality of life and employment • decrease a sence of loneliness and social isolation, along with a reduction in depression and poor psychological health. • reduce CO2 emissions and reduce congestion via active travel • lower the number of working age people on out of work benefits. Sounds great doesn’t it!? There is of course a problem. The world we all live in doesn’t make being physically active very easy; in fact, it’s easier to move less than it is to move more. Inactivity is contributing to major chronic diseases, such as cancers, diabetes and heart disease. Inactive children are becoming inactive adults which produces a downward spiral of ill health and poor quality of life for the future generations. This is unacceptable. A change in culture is required. We are inviting everybody in the city to Move More... That includes organisations, groups, sports clubs, communitiies, individuals, families, schools, environmental groups, policy-makers, workplaces, health professionals etc etc. Get moving and help others to move more. So what will you do? Visit our current sections to find out how you can get involved • Individuals • Workforce • Miracle Cure • Active Everyday • Activity Finder • Events calendar
Sheffield’s Green Commission will be holding its fourth hearing in public next month and limited places are now on offer to members of the public wishing to attend. The Commission was set up to allow leaders from across the public and private sector to make sure environmental issues are given a high priority over the next 15-20 years. It will have its fourth public hearing on Tuesday (12 May) at 6pm at Sheffield University’s landmark building. The event is co-hosted by the University of Sheffield. Professor Martin Mayfield, Professor of Engineering Design at the University of Sheffield said: “The University of Sheffield is delighted to be hosting the Sheffield Green Commission. as well as holding debates and hearing from expert witnesses. Each session will create a number of recommendations and at each intermediate stage written documents will be published on the Council website at www. sheffield.gov.uk/greencommission. Fifteen Green Commissioners have been nominated to represent Sheffield’s business, economic, environmental, academic and health interests. This meeting is the fourth of six hearings to be held in public, after which a report will be produced with short, medium and long term (20 year) recommendations for Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet to consider. Up to 200 places are available for the meeting on 12 May on a ‘first come, first served’ basis and anyone wishing to attend or join the Green Commission mailing list can register by e-mailing greencommission@sheffield. gov.uk . There are a number of key themes being considered by the Commission: sustainable transport; low carbon energy and resource efficiency; sustainable growth and a low carbon economy; climate change; the blue and green infrastructure that contributes towards the quality of life; communication, engagement, education and behavioural change; and health and well-being. Improving health and well-being underpins the other six topics.

SEE MARK KNOPFLER LIVE Mark Knopfler has announced that he will be touring in 2015, giving fans the opportunity to hear live tracks from his latest album, Tracker, released back in January. Mark, who last performed at the Arena as part of Dire Straits back in 1991 is the first artiste booked to play the Motorpoint Arena’s new reduced capacity 4,000 seated venue, The Steel Hall, which is housed within the Arena’s main hall, bringing the audience closer to the event on Sunday May 17th. Amid the new material, when the audiences call for the songs that became part of all our lives, he will relish it. “The thing about the old Straits songs is that these things are signposts for people’s lives. Obviously I’ll play things differently here and there to keep it alive and meaningful to me, and away from a cabaret thing. But there are things, like the twiddly bits at the end of ‘Sultans,’ if you don’t do your twiddly bits, the world’s not right for people. I like
playing the old songs, I wrote them and people like to hear them, it’s as simple as that.” Knopfler will be performing with a seven-piece band most of whom have been working with him for the best part of two decades; Guy Fletcher (keyboards), Richard Bennett (guitar), Jim Cox (piano), Mike McGoldrick (whistle and flute), John McCusker (fiddle and cittern), Glenn Worf (bass), and Ian Thomas (drums). Tracker is Knopfler’s ninth solo album a sequence that started in 1996 with Golden Heart. The album also contains guest performances from Ruth Moody, Bruce Molsky, Nigel Hitchcock and Phil Cunningham. A multiple Grammy award winner Knopfler continues to combine his wry lyrics with his guitar prowess and has created such major hits as Money For Nothing, Sultans Of Swing, Romeo and Juliet, Walk of Life, What It Is and Sailing To Philadelphia. He has collaborated with many other artists such
VOTE LOXLEY THIS WEEK! In this week of elections, Loxley Silver Band also needs your votes! Loxley Silver Band provides an important community service in Sheffield. As a traditional brass band they offer both a musical education service to children and adult learners and contribute to a number of community events. Loxley currently have around 50 members involved in learning and making music, with around a third of these being children and young people aged 18 and under. The rest of the membership is made up of young adults, adults and older people – with some members over the age of 80. Loxley run two separate bands – Loxley Training Band and Loxley Silver Band meaning they can accommodate learners at all stages and offer progression opportunities. In 2015 the band plan to significantly recruit from local primary schools to grow and develop the training band. We estimate that more than 3,000 people will benefit from
hearing them perform in 2015. They perform regularly at a number of local community events including community summer fayres, school galas, park bandstands and music festivals. Loxley usually undertake at least twenty performances during December, playing at local churches, and upholding the tradition of local Sheffield carols in pubs and playing round local villages on Christmas day. In March 2015 Loxley Band proudly attended the Yorkshire Brass Band Championships, for the first time in their 126 year history – and came a very respectable 6th place. A donation of £1,000 from Aviva would make a really useful contribution to the band’s running costs (rehearsal space, uniform, band conductor / trainer, instrument maintenance and insurance) – the remainder of which has to be covered by band subscriptions and local fundraising (such as collections at Christmas and sales of their recently recorded CD). This
as Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Randy Newman, Van Morrison and Emmylou Harris, as well as scoring several films including Cal, Local Hero and Princess Bride. Tickets for Mark Knopfler’s Sheffield date are now on general sale person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www. motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk.
COMPETITION To be in with a chance of winning a pair of tickets to this amazing show simply answer the following question and send your entry to info@mercurynewspaper. co.uk before 12th May 2015. When did Mark last perform with Dire Straits at the Arena? Closing Date: 12/5/15
would help Loxley Silver Band to further promote their work and support even more new members, especially children and young people, in both of their bands. Please help the band by logging onto the Aviva Community Fund website at avivacommunityfund.co.uk and voting for ‘Loxley Silver Band’ Loxley Silver Band had a great year in 2014; they successfully recruited several new members, in particular a number of children and young people under 18, they produced their own CD and played on a professionally produced EP for the folk-rock band ‘Love Street’, also performing at their album launch in Cornwall, supported a range of local events and performed their own high profile concerts at a number of local venues. Loxley Silver Band are a very friendly and welcoming band and provide high quality music tuition to learners of all ages – they are always open to new members.

GERMANS RETURN TO ENSURE SHEFFIELD BLITZ SACRIFICES ARE NOT FORGOTTEN A delegation of German military and police were the first people to walk the proposed Sheffield Blitz Heritage Trail this week. They were greeted by the Deputy Lord of Sheffield, Councillor Talib Hussain, before undertaking a VIP tour of the city centre sites that are being lined up to be commemorated as part of plans to mark 75th anniversary of the Sheffield Blitz. Two German bombing raids left over 2,000 people dead and wounded and nearly a tenth of the city homeless on the 12th and 15th of December 1940. There was hardly a suburb of the city that wasn’t hit in the attacks and great swathes of the city centre lay in ruins. Author Neil Anderson started the drive for more to commemorate the attacks following the publication of his ‘Sheffield’s Date With Hitler’ book in 2010. He is working with project manager Richard Godley and heritage interpreter Bill Bevan on a Heritage Lottery Fund bid to secure finances to ensure the sacrifices made by tens of thousands of Sheffield people are never forgotten. They are planning to work with the German-based group on research into the Sheffield Blitz from the German side and explore British attacks on Sheffield’s twin city, Bochum, which was hit in
1943 and 1944. The project is seeking to tell the story of the Sheffield Blitz with the aid of: • A major launch event on the 75th anniversary of the first attack (December 12, 2015) • A permanent Sheffield Blitz Heritage Trail which will publicise and tell the stories of significant sites around the city centre area with the aid of listening posts, interpretation posts, leaflet and more • The collection of scores of personal memories which will go towards the production of an ‘hour by hour’, ‘day-by-day’ book which will tell the story of the Sheffield Blitz like never before. • Drawing on untapped archive material and memorabilia to provide permanent and travelling Sheffield-based Blitz exhibitions.
The Sheffield Blitz 75th project is set to last over two years and will end on the anniversary of the last German raids on the UK. It will tell the inter-connected Sheffield stories of human spirit, steel production and revival. The bid has already received high profile letters of support from Horrible Histories creator Terry Deary, Atkinsons of Sheffield, The Moor and Sheffield City Council. Neil Anderson said: “When I researched my book I was continually surprised about how little there was to mark the attacks. Our project intends to change that forever. We’re very excited about the links we’ve made in Germany and I’m confident the meeting will be start of a fruitful partnership.”
Graham Frith, manager of Atkinsons, Frank Reininghaus, Commander (Senior Grade) (Navy) and Professor, M.S.C, M.P.S (Master of Peace: Security Studies) and Neil Anderson (right), author of Sheffield’s Date With Hitler

May is a wonderful month in the garden. Blossom is everywhere, spilling over fences or festooning roadside trees, but the greatest moment of joy for plant lovers is that moment when the first rose blooms. With their fragrance and colour, roses are the starting signal for the opening act of the summer garden. The rose is the queen of flowers and should never be absent from the garden. Our Garden Plant of the Month of May is therefore the rose because it is the most traditional, fragrant and beautiful flower you can have in your garden and it should be given the spotlight it deserves. Climbing roses, stem roses, shrub roses, spray roses ... There are so many different types, colours and sizes that they can find a place in any garden. It is also easy to create the atmosphere you want with roses. For a cheerful garden, you can combine a spectrum of different coloured roses or, if you would prefer a garden that is brimming with luxury and comfort, white roses are always a great choice.
Or, if you want to go for a wilder look, ground cover spray roses and single-flowered roses create a suitably naturalistic effect. Giving them the best start Whichever rose you choose, most species love a place in the sun. Planting roses is a simple job. Remove the plant from its pot, loosen the root ball, dig a hole and put the rose in it. Fill the hole with a mixture of compost and soil and add a generous swig of water. Remember that roses are hungry plants, which is why you need to feed them every year in March and July.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker
What is going on at the moment? I hope you are having better luck with your fishing than I am, as my struggles continue... I had a short five hour session this week, and couldn’t but a bite at a Derby park lake. Nor could other anglers, so it wasn’t just me, but I have decided that I now dislike this time of year intensely. I recently fished another venue, intent on trying to catch one of the specimen carp within, and once more, I struggled manfully before giving up. It wasn’t that I couldn’t find the fish, I just couldn’t get them to take a bait! I could see a good number of fish stacked up in a corner of the lake, so close I could almost touch them, and, as I secreted myself away in bankside cover, I offered all sorts to try and induce a bite! The fish were hovering just below the surface, and after a few days of glorious sunshine, unfortunately followed by a hard frost, they seemed happy to sulk beneath the cover of some overhanging branches. I watched them for almost an hour, during which time they barely moved, and then introduced a few baits to see if they would feed. Cat biscuits first, tiny morsels of floating fodder which I felt sure would be hoovered up; not so, they ignored them. A crust of bread; surely no self-respecting carp could fail to notice one of the best carp baits of all time? No, not interested in that either. How about some sweetcorn? Slipped into the margins behind the fish, my golden nuggets gained not a sniff... I resorted to a small bunch of maggots on a relatively small hook, which I placed on the nose of a stationary carp, and still couldn’t get a take! I know spawning is probably on their mind, but there were no indicators to suggest that was on the cards. Water temperatures are still fairly low, there was no charging around the margins, no diving into

reed beds or any other behaviour to indicate that amorous intentions were expected. Besides which, carp are prone to feeding hard just before spawning to ensure they have enough reserves to survive an energy sapping period, so I was flummoxed again... I still have no idea why they refused to even look at any bait. My rigs were the same as rigs I’ve caught numerous fish on, I know the baits work well at this particular fishery, but they just wouldn’t play, so I can only put it down to the weather or atmospheric pressure, but I still can’t put my finger on it.... frustrating isn’t it this fishing lark? Anyway, one venue I do know is producing a lot of fish is Alderfen Fisheries which isn’t too far from Sheffield. My contact at the venue, Dave, tells me that plenty of decent carp are coming out, especially on Wyndham Lake, with fish to 25lb 8oz recorded, which are falling to boilie tactics. If you don’t know about it, Alderfen offers some hugely impressive rudd fishing when the sun is up and the water warms. Waggler and maggot tactics are needed to get them going, but when you do, expect fish to almost 4lb! Will it produce a record? Maybe....

It’s that time of the year again. The summer break is upon us after a very successful season for the County Senior League and its clubs. We have new Premier League Champions in Swinton Athletic and fresh League Cup Winners in the shape of Oughtibridge WMFC. In addition to a competitive league season, we saw two County Senior League sides win S&HCFA Cups, with Denaby Main winning the Association Cup and Handsworth Parramore U21 taking the Saturday Junior Cup. League Cup Final The League Cup Final took place on Wednesday night at Sandy Lane, Worksop, where Joker FC and Oughtibridge WMFC faced-off. Oughtibridge had beaten Joker twice in the league this season, which hinted at a win for the North Sheffield outfit. That came true, as Oughtibridge ran-out convincing 3-0 winners. It has been a good couple of years in the cups for Oughtibridge, who last season reached the Semi-Finals of the S&HCFA Saturday Senior Cup. Premier Division Goals from Kieran Hirst and Josh Fairman gave Houghton Main a 2-0 win over local rivals Wombwell Main at Wombwell Main Cricket Club on Friday night. It has been a couple of years of near misses for Houghton Main, as they finish second in the Premier Division. Last season they finished in third and were League Cup Runner’s up. It was the second 2-0 home defeat in two days for Wombwell, who were previously beaten by third placed Swallownest Miners Welfare. Division One AFC Dronfield claimed a great final day scalp, as they beat Division One Winners North Gawber Colliery 3-1 at Woolley Miners Welfare. The defeat is only the third North Gawber have suffered in the league, and the points carry Dronfield out of the bottom three. Division Two Second placed Caribbean Sports gained some revenge for missing out on the Division Two title to Denaby Main, by beating them 5-0 at home on Wednesday night. Rayon Ramsey (2), Javid Heffernan, Stacy Sharif and Stefan
Myers were all on the score-sheet in a vintage performance from the Caribbean. They take a great momentum into next season, as they unbeaten in the league since earlySeptember. Parkgate Reserves finished their season in the top-half, after they beat Bawtry Town 4-1 at the Roundwood Pavilion on Saturday. Parkgate had lost midweek 2-0 away to fifth placed Worsbrough Birdge Athletic Reserves. U21 Division Double Winners Handsworth Parramore U21 ended their season, with the crushing 6-0 defeat of second placed Houghton Main U21 on Saturday. Handsworth have scored 92 goals in the league this season, conceding only 18 which is half the next best defence in the division. It has been a busy week for defending U21 Champions Swallownest Miners Welfare U21, who were in action three times this week with varying success. On Monday night they were held to a goalless draw by U21 Cup Winners Athersley Recreation U21. They were beaten 9-0 on Wednesday night by second placed Houghton Main U21. A Josh Cornwall hattrick set the foundation for Houghton Main, with Joel Hickling (2), Josh Fairman, Danny Burkinshaw, Ryan Brooke and Orrin McIntyre also on target. They then ended a rollercoaster of week on Saturday, with a 5-5 draw at home against Wombwell Main U21.

MILLERS ENDING ON A HIGH NOTE ROTHERHAM United ended their Championship campaign with a share of the spoils against Yorkshire neighbours Leeds United at Elland Road. The Millers completed their first campaign in England’s second tier for a decade by extending their unbeaten run to four games following the goalless draw in West Yorkshire. Following their hard-fought victory over Reading in midweek which guaranteed Championship survival, the Millers made two changes to their starting line-up for the trip to Elland Road. Charlton loanee Lawrie Wilson was handed a rare starting berth in the right-back slot as Jack Hunt missed out because of illness while Scottish international Kirk Broadfoot failed to shrug off a knock sustained in the win over the Royals so Richard Wood was asked to deputise at the heart of the Millers rearguard. The Millers settled quickly into the clash when Danny Lafferty’s threaded ball saw Matt Derbyshire get on the wrong side of Sol Bamba but the Leeds defender recovered smartly to snuff out the danger. Minutes later, Danny Ward superbly chested a long punt forward before firing a cross-cum-shot which had Stuart Taylor nervously scurrying across goal as it was deflected behind for a corner before Richard Smallwood’s clipped ball over the top found Derbyshire in the right channel but the exOlympiakos striker failed to find Ward, who was unmarked in the box, as his cross was cleared by a retreating defender. Just past the quarter hour, Lee Frecklington was hauled over by Rodolph Austin in an inviting position but Ward fluffed his lines with the resultant free-kick as he blazed his shot into the home faithful behind the goal. Minutes later, Leeds were indebted to Samba for throwing his body in the way of Ward’s goalbound shot after Gaetano Berardi’s wayward clearance went into his path before Bamba had Leeds’ first foray of note when he met Luke Murphy’s free-kick but his glancing header failed to trouble Emi Martinez. Moments later, Steve Morison latched onto Charlie Taylor’s throughball but although he calmly slide the ball under Martinez, his
FIVE OF THE BEST TO FINISH THE SEASON
Nathan Tyson will take the headlines for his hattrick, but it was a masterclass performance from Harry Forrester that contributed to a 5-2 victory over the Iron. Marko Marosi and Mitchell Lund were included in Paul Dickov’s starting eleven again as he continued to show faith in the Rovers youngsters with the season coming to a close. With Rovers looking to end the season on a high at the Keepmoat, they started the game on the front foot pressuring Mark Robins men right from the off. Playing with a real energy, James Coppinger set Harry Forrester free down the left. Beating two Scunthorpe men he was eventually hacked down by Jordan Clarke just outside the box. Kyle Bennett whipped the resulting free kick in towards the back post and Scunthorpe defender Neill Canavan headed the ball into his own net to give the home side the lead. There were a crazy few seconds following the opening goal as Kevin Van Veen broke into the Rovers box. Having beaten Marko Marosi, the dutchman went down hoping to get a penalty but the referee said no. With Marosi still down, Neal Bishop had an open goal to aim at with the follow up shot but it rattled the cross bar. Rovers continued to pressure the visitors and looked hungry for a second. Forrester had the South Stand on their feet as his curling free kick from 25 yards had Luke Daniels beaten, only for it to hit the side netting. Minutes later Forrester was causing problems again. Picking up the ball on the left he nutmegged his man before spreading the ball wide to Bennett. Chipping the
2014/15 joy was curtailed by an early offside award before Lafferty latched onto Frecklington’s inviting centre at the other end but he couldn’t control his header as it blazed over the bar. Bamba became the first to see yellow after he tripped Derbyshire in full flow just outside the box and Smallwood almost made the home side pay from the resultant free-kick when he curled a delicate effort which narrowly cleared the home crossbar. At the other end, home skipper Liam Cooper rose highest from Alex Mowatt’s tantalising free-kick but his clever header was smartly gathered by Martinez before Kari Arnason produced a superb last-ditch tackle to prevent Taylor from shooting goalwards after the visitors were split open by a fine flowing home move. Minutes later, the Millers almost broke the deadlock when Frecklington’s clever pass paved the way for Ben Pringle to fizz an inviting centre which was inch-perfect for the run of Ward, who struck goalwards but the ball unlikely struck Derbyshire en-route to goal. With half-time approaching, the Millers had a scare when Austin struck a fantastic effort from distance despite having little backlift which had Martinez flying across goal as it whistled past the upright. Moments later, Frecklington stung the palms of Taylor with a snap shot following good work from Pringle before the ex-Derby midfielder was in the thick of the action in the next visitors’ attack when his goalbound volley was blocked by Bamba as it
was arrowing towards the bottom corner of the goal. Following the restart, Leeds had the first sight of goal when Cooper had a shot blocked before Murphy blazed an effort over from distance moments later. In the next home attack, Mowatt and Morison combined smartly to give the former a sight of goal but Wilson bravely blocked his goalbound shot before Cooper powered a bullet header straight down the throat of Martinez from the resultant corner. The home side were looking the most likely and the Millers had Wood to thank for a superb last-ditch tackle to prevent sub Billy Sharp from making an immediate impact from the bench as he looked a certain scorer as he beared down on goal. Moments later, Arnason hauled down Murphy just outside the box but Mowatt failed to make the Millers’ pay when he curled his free-kick harmlessly over the bar before Sharp screwed an effort wide of the target. Minutes later, Bamba was on his toes to prevent Jonson Clarke-Harris connecting with Jordan Bowery’s inviting centre before Arnason curled a long-range effort narrowly over the home bar. With time running out, Austin stung the palms of Martinez with another long-range effort which was parried to safety by the Arsenal loanee before Bamba’s header from Murphy’s corner was smartly gathered by the visitors’ keeper moments later. In the last action of note, Clarke-Harris fired a rasping freekick narrowly wide of the target after he was felled on the edge of the box by Bamba.
ball in to the box Bennett’s cross was met by Nathan Tyson who headed home from six yards to take his tally to twelve for the season. Rovers led 2-0. On the stroke of half time it was the men in red and white who threatened again. This time Coppinger found some space outside the area and released a shot forcing a great save from Daniels low to his right. Rovers made it three on the stroke of half time as captain Rob Jones rose above everyone to meet a Forrester corner and finish off a very nice half of football from Paul Dickov’s men. Scunthorpe came out fighting in the second half and Van Veen went close when he got on the end of a cross with an acrobatic effort, but it went narrowly over the bar. The visitors did pull a goal back however through Van Veen. A mix up at the back for Rovers allowed the striker to eventually tap the ball in from two yards after a number of deflections! The Iron went close again through Van Even as his shot from 12 yards was cleared off the line by Andy Butler. Tyson doubled his tally and made it four for Rovers when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul on Forrester. Breaking into the box Forrester was bought down just as he was about to release his shot and the referee made no mistake in pointing to the spot. The referee awarded another penalty as Forrester was bought down again just moments later. Weaving his way in and out of defenders the end product looked a certain goal before he was rugby tackled to the ground! On a hat-trick Tyson stepped up and made it five for Rovers. In injury time The Iron got another goal back in bizarre fashion. With Adelakun standing over a free kick, he whipped the ball in and somehow it went through Marosi’s legs and into the back of the net. Shortly after, the final whistle was blown and Rovers deserved their victory ending the season on a high.

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD UNITED
BLADES NEWS2014/15 ALL SQUARE AS BOTH TEAMS LOOK TO PLAYOFFS In the 46th and final league game of the Sky Bet League One season, the Blades recorded a draw with local rivals Chesterfield. The point, thanks to Marc McNulty’s 13th goal of the season, earned a play-off berth against Swindon Town. More than 26,000 were inside the Lane to see United record a third consecutive 1-1 draw at the end of the regular season. With play-off qualification already assured, chief Clough made five changes for the final regular season fixture. Murphy was rested, whilst Basham (knee) and Coutts (hamstring) were carrying minor problems and were
not risked ahead of the play-off semi-final. McEveley returned to the starting lineup, as did McNulty, Scougall, Reed and captain Doyle. All sides of the Lane were vociferous at kickoff and the vibe was passed onto the players in a high-energy start, although the better chances fell to the Blades. Runs from Adams and Scougall earned corners in the first ten minutes, whilst Lee was forced to punch out a deflected effort from Adams the rebound almost dropped for Scougall. On 20 minutes, United went very close, thanks to Scougall and McNulty linking up but the latter’s curling shot was turned around
the left post by Lee’s outstretched hand. Chesterfield’s first effort came from a short free-kick routine but O’Shea was well off target. A slip from McEveley then saw O’Shea handed another shooting chance on 26 minutes but he fired straight at Howard. Chesterfield appeared to have weathered the early Blades storm but they were hit by a blast on 34 minutes. A quick free-kick saw Brayford’s long-ranger weak but, on the edge of the box, the ball was controlled and smashed into the net by McNULTY before goalkeeper Lee could react. The remainder of the half saw United’s disciplined defensive
unit on their mettle as goalkeeper Howard was not tested, despite the visitors enjoying plenty of possession. Chesterfield, however, made a bright start to the second period and were rewarded with an early goal. A corner on the left was only half cleared and from a Jones delivery, EVATT stayed forward and headed across Howard, into the bottom corner. The start to the second half was frantic. A break by Roberts saw O’Shea cut inside Freeman and force a save out of Howard, whilst a minute later Lee, out of his goal, headed weakly to Scougall but the immediate return from the midfielder was blocked. Harris
was booked for a foul on Gardner as Chesterfield’s pressure continued but the subsequent free-kick from Roberts flew over the crossbar. Just before hour, homegrown CalvertLewin was introduced for a home debut, replacing Doyle as the Blades changed formation. McNulty couldn’t get any power in a header from a deflected Reed cross, whilst Flynn took over from Scougall. Chesterfield had a great chance to take the lead on 74 minutes when Morsy clipped a ball over the top of the defence and Clucas was ready to fire at Howard on the halfvolley when McEveley slid in and made a

HAT TRICK FOR MURPHY Jamie Murphy was named United’s Player of the Year on Sunday night. The Scottish winger picked up the main award at a glittering awards ceremony held at Sheffield City Hall. Murphy has scored
12 times this season, including two against Swindon Town United’s play-off semi-final opponents. Murphy also picked up joint Players’ Player of the Year award with Chris Basham at Sunday
night’s event, which was sponsored by JB Doors. BBC’s Harry Gration presented the evening, which also saw Nigel Clough, the first team squad and other Alan Hodgkinson and Blades luminaries Eddie Colquhoun in such as Tony Currie, attendance. Other awards on the night saw Louis Reed named the David ‘Shred’ Spencer Young Player of the Year, the 17-yearold also picked up the Achievement of the Year for his breakthrough season. Skipper Michael Doyle was named the Community Foundation’s Player of the Year for his work in the community, whilst Jamie Murphy made it a hat-trick of awards after collecting the Goal of the Season for his strike against Doncaster Rovers.
vital block. Soon after, Roberts fired across goal and wide. Steven Davies replaced the injured Reed in the final ten minutes and partnered CalvertLewin, with McNulty moving out wide. Calvert-Lewin had a shot blocked late on, whilst there was a late scare on 89 minutes when McEveley’s back header was short but although Gnanduillet nipped in before Howard, his effort was comfortably cleared by Howard. As four minutes of added time was announced Clucas headed over and Chesterfield had a corner but the Blades defended well and held on for a point and fifth place, held since February.

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY
OWLS NEWS2014/15 OWLS SPOIL TITLE PARTY Watford came within a whisker of being crowned champions on their home soil of Vicarage Road – only for Wednesday to spoil the party as the curtain came down on the 2014/15 season. Matej Vydra scored midway through the first half to give the Hornets the lead in a carnival Hertfordshire atmosphere but the Owls hit back in stoppage time through Atdhe Nuhiu to claim a late, late leveller. Watford dominated overall, carving a raft of chances, with the Owls pinned back in their own half for much of the contest Wednesday were out to upset the odds and the hosts - who headed into the game with promotion assured – but found it tough going as Watford showed their promotion credentials. Boasting one of the most potent home records in the division, the onus was always on the Hornets to take the game to Wednesday and this
they did from the first whistle, almost profiting five minutes in when Marco Motta broke free down the right but Tom Lees cleared. Troy Deeney threatened next and raced in on goal only to see Chris Kirkland dash off his line to thwart the home side’s leading scorer. But Watford were not to be denied and took the lead on 25 minutes. Kirkland was down sharply to keep out another effort from Deeney and the rebound fell nicely for Vydra to nod into an empty net. It was nearly two just past the half-hour when a neat buildup with dangerman Deeney at the heart created a golden chance for Almen Abdi, who skewed his shot wide. Wednesday introduced Nuhiu for Caolan Lavery to help stem the tide but the Hornets kept coming and Abdi smashed narrowly over the bar from a Motta feed
HAPPY NUHIU LOOKS BACK
Atdhe Nuhiu was delighted to strike a late equaliser at Vicarage Road to earn Wednesday a point on the last day of the term. four minutes before Watford were just the break. moments away from The Owls welcomed sealing the league the half time whistle title but Nuhiu but were on the back scored in stoppage foot immediately after time in front of the ecstatic visiting the resumption when supporters behind a brave last-ditch the goal. challenge thwarted Deeney 12 yards out on the angle. Wednesday did grow into the second half, though, and offered much more going forward, although the better of the chances fell to the Hornets. Vydra and Deeney went close, Kirkland saved well from Juan Carlos Parades and it seemed the hosts were on course for the title. But it was not to be as substitute Nuhiu prodded a bouncing ball home right at the last to finish the campaign with another creditable away point for Wednesday.

After the dramatic contest, Nuhiu told the Owls’ official website: “We never give up as a team and I will never give up as a player. “While ever we are on the pitch, we will always believe and never give up. That is my character as a player and our character as a team. That goal was for everyone; the staff,
the players, the fans and everyone connected to the club. We are all together as one and we move forward together. It was a difficult game, Watford have a lot of quality but we hung in there and that goal sums up our spirit and I was happy to score it.”
GRAY THANKS TRAVELLING FANS
The proverbial game of two halves was the postmatch assessment of Stuart Gray following the 1-1 draw with Watford at Vicarage Road. Atdhe Nuhiu’s late leveller cancelled out Matej Vydra’s first half opener to deny the Hornets the Championship title. And Gray insisted his side deserved something from the game if only for their second half performance. He said: “We were like a rabbit in the headlights in the first half. We dropped off them, we showed them too much respect and that display was not good enough. “I said to the players
at half time that the only positive thing is that we were only one goal down. We came out for the second half a different side and by the hour-mark, we had grown into the game. They might say we have nicked it overall but this team will battle to the end of every game, whether that’s the
