TRAMLINES ANNOUNCE FINAL LINE UP FOR THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL Tramlines Festival Reveals Final Lineup for 2015 - Including Neneh Cherry, Anathema, We Are The Ocean, Roni Size, Mr Scruff, Horse Meat Disco, Camo & Krooked, Loadstar, Monki + more Sheffield’s Tramlines Festival is thrilled to unveil the final lineup for its 2015 event taking place from 2426 July. Completing its mammoth bill are Buffalo Stance singer Neneh Cherry, prog-rock legends Anathema, The Charlatans’ label-mates We Are The Ocean, godfather of drum & bass Roni Size, London disco collective Horse Meat Disco and many more. Tramlines is one of the UK’s biggest inner-city festivals where, for one weekend, 100,000 people descend upon Sheffield to turn the city centre into one huge festival site. Now in its seventh year, Tramlines continues to bring genre-spanning legendary acts alongside breaking new talent to its stages. Headliners for 2015 include The Charlatans, Basement Jaxx, and Wu Tang Clan, with support from the likes of Billy Bragg, Buzzcocks, Martha Reeves and Sugarhill Gang. The festival will open on the Thursday night at the iconic Leadmill with a pre-party from Ninja Tuna founder Mr Scruff, who’ll bring his eclectic bigbeat sounds to the dancefloor. Further topping up the 2015 lineup is a speakershaking electronic bill including Hospital Records’ Camo & Krooked and liquid drum & bass duo Fred V & Grafix, garage DJ and remix extraordinaire DJ

Q, Radio 1xtra’s Monki, bass music stars Joker & New York Transit Authority, Ram Records’ Loadstar, Rinse FM DJs Mak & Pasteman, Sub Focus’ front man MC ID and Hypercolour’s Tom Demac. Festival Director Sarah Nulty said: “Each year we aim to top the lineup of the year before and I think we’ve done it - the blend of established acts versus upcoming talent plus local versus international is huge! Not to mention the fact there’s something on offer to appeal to all manner of music fans at Tramlines, from rock to jazz and electronic to indie.”. The final acts join the already announced electronic bill featuring Roman Flugel, Erol Alkan, Gilles Peterson, James Holden, Evian Christ and A Guy Called Gerald, and a ton of breaking acts including Slaves, Lonelady, Dutch Uncles, Marika Hackman, Kate Tempest and hundreds more. With a plethora of spaces to explore, from the stunning Sheffield Cathedral to intimate and noisy rock venues, live street entertainment, independent food markets and the added bonus of no mud and no camping, Tramlines is one of the UK’s most varied city-centre festivals. Weekend tickets can be purchased from www. tramlines.org.uk for only £30 + bf, which makes Tramlines one of the best value festivals around. For up-to-the-minute information about Tramlines 2015, visit www.tramlines.org.uk or follow Tramlines on Twitter @tramlines

ALBERT SNODGRASS

I used to be addicted to the old Hokey Cokey... But I turned myself around, and that’s what it’s all about! My laptop is broken. It just keeps playing “Chasing Pavements” over and over again. Probably because it’s a Dell. I was having a fight with a hoodie last night when my wife opened the back door and said, “Leave my washing line alone and get in this house, you drunken fool!” English is weird. It can be understood through tough thorough thought, though. I’m not afraid of flying. I am, however, afraid of being 35,000 feet in the air and suddenly “not” flying. I need a ladder but I can’t afford one. So, steps will have to be taken. Childhood is like being drunk. Everyone remembers what you did, except you. As I waited to be taken down to start my prison term, I was allowed a final minute with my wife. I said “Listen Susan, prison is a horrible place that changes people for the worse, and when I come out I doubt I’ll be the same man you know and love. For that reason, I don’t expect you to wait for me, so get on with your life and try and meet someone else who can hopefully be a father to our children. Most of all though, just stay strong and be happy.” “Stay strong?” my wife snapped, “You’re only doing a week for an unpaid parking ticket!”

The festival will open on the Thursday night at the iconic Leadmill with a pre-party from Ninja Tuna founder Mr Scruff, who’ll bring his eclectic bigbeat sounds to the dancefloor.

I’ve been trying to teach my mate how to play golf recently but the problem seems to be his drive. His wife stands on it and doesn’t let us out.

Let Me Entertain You... (2 HOUR SHOW) 50s & 60s GOLDEN OLDIES LET ME SING ALL YOUR FAVOURITES A promising start can see you making financial as well as other key plans. And though Mercury begins its second retrograde phase of 2015, you can accomplish much by being willing to go with it even so. Indeed, you might even accomplish more. Call for more news and astral advice…

Monday’s New Moon can be an excellent opportunity for a fresh financial start, especially if you’re keen to clear obligations. On another note, are you resisting the idea of change? That’s perfectly fine Libra! As if your current set-up works, why fix it? Call for more astral advice…

Monday’s New Moon in your sign is the best of the year for you, and is helpful for starting projects, adopting positive habits and making commitments. However, where money is concerned things may not go as planned. Don’t be too rash with your spending. Call for more…

Finances may be a focus over coming weeks. If an issue has been bugging you, now is the time to get the necessary information and sort it out. From Friday keep an open mind, even if what others are suggesting seems somewhat uninspiring at first. Call for your financial scope in full…

The following three weeks can bring delays, but also an opportunity to experiment with what works best for you. Nothing is set in stone and your natural flexibility can make it easier for you to erase early attempts and make more attempts. Call now for more news and astral advice…

Whether it’s work colleagues, friends or family - it seems you’re set to be in demand. Even so, reserve the right “not” to commit to anything for now, as Mercury’s retrograde phase can be a sign of unexpected change. Over the weekend try to relax and don’t try too hard. Call for more…

Although Monday’s New Moon encourages new activity in your social circle, the focus will rapidly shift to more behind-the-scenes issues around life and living. It’s that time of year when the cosmos encourages you to take a reduced schedule so you can reflect on what’s best. Call for more…

Although there’s a chance to make progress this week, you might encounter some disruption to plans. Mercury begins its backward dance from Tuesday which could disrupt the smooth flow of events. Even so, it’s worthwhile making a start. Call me now for more news and astral advice…

Get a head start with a plan at the beginning of the week. And though you might experience a few delays, they could prove a help rather than a hindrance. While social affairs look positive, you may still need to sidestep someone’s edgy approach to a fab idea of yours. Call for more…

A playful approach to work, romance and other areas of life could make the difference between a pleasant week or a routine one. The focus on your leisure zone hints that making use of your creative abilities could bring excellent results. Call now for more news and astral advice…

Good advice can be a boon this week, helping you make sense of a jumble of information and ideas. Although Mercury rewinds from Tuesday, the coming three weeks could be the ideal time to test drive a plan and see how it works out for you. Call for more news and astral advice…

Changes to family dynamics are possible as Mars encourages action over complacency. You’ll feel more motivated to get a move on, but will need to factor in other people’s ideas - as some might not agree with you. Over the week ahead a compromise should be possible. Call for more…

READING SHEFFIELD PROJECT:

Vote online by 30 May for funding to support their website Vote here by 30 May to support Reading Sheffield celebrating the reading lives of older people in Sheffield. The project wants £1,000 from Aviva’s Community Fund for a website to record readers’ experiences and memories. See below to vote. For the past four years Reading Sheffield has worked with older people who, usually without books at home and thanks to public libraries, became independent and passionate readers - thus contributing to their roles in post-war Sheffield. Their creativity and individuality in finding books and time for reading have inspired creative responses from Sheffield poet, Eleanor Brown, and artist, Lizz Tuckerman. These will also feature on the website, testifying to the power of reading to transform lives. Reading Sheffield has already been pledged £2,000. £1,000 from Aviva would secure the website for five years, fostering a sense of value for the interviewees, young readers and audiences beyond Sheffield. Here’s how to vote. • Log on to https://community-fund. aviva.co.uk/voting/project/view/1111/ (Reading Sheffield’s page). • Follow the instructions to register (top right of the page, under log in). • Aviva will email you. Click on the link in the email to activate your account. • Log on and vote. You will have ten votes and can use them all to support Reading Sheffield or spread them around.

BRAMALL LANE TO HOST HISTORIC CUP FINAL Bramall Lane was the setting for an international tournament draw that is promising to bring the global stars of the future to the Steel City. Sheffield is recognising its footballing heritage this summer with the Youdan Trophy which celebrates the oldest tournament in the world - the Youdan Cup that pre-dates the FA Cup by a full four years and was played only once at Bramall Lane in 1867. Sheffield-based You-Are-The-Ref.com, which is the world's leading independent authority and education platform for match officials, are behind the creation of the tournament that is set to see invited youth teams at the under 14 age group from as far away as Australia competing. The original Youdan Cup was the brainchild of Thomas Youdan - a self-made Victorian who was behind Sheffield's celebrated Alexandra Theatre. The final was played at Bramall Lane and won by Hallam FC on March 5th, 1867, in front of 3,000 people. Thomas Youdan's only surviving relative, Dr Glyn

Youdan, made the draw for the Youdan Trophy at Bramall Lane in front of a capacity crowd minutes before Sheffield United's play-off game. The Youdan Trophy competition is set to take place from Monday, July 27 to Friday, July 31. Group games will be played at Sheffield Hallam University's SportsPark on Bawtry Road and the final will take place at Bramall Lane on July 31. The tournament sees both Sheffield and Glasgow professional football clubs pitted against each other as well as Brentford and Charlton from London. The draw determined which teams played in the two groups as follows: Group 1 Charlton Athletic Glasgow Celtic Nerang Eagles Sheffield United

Group 2 Brentford FAB Academy Glasgow Rangers Sheffield Wed

The Youdan Trophy is being delivered in partnership with Marketing Sheffield, Sheffield University and Sheffield Hallam University. Celebrated South Yorkshire sculptor Graham Ibbeson has designed and made the new Youdan Trophy that will be presented to the winner. Free tickets for the July 31 final and Bramall Lane are available from www.youdantrophy.com

A ROYAL WELCOME FROM THE NEW HOSTS OF THE ALBERT INN When Gill & Steve were mine hosts of The Bridge Inn at Ford, Ridgeway, they developed a fantastic reputation for creating a great atmosphere in addition to the excellent home cooked food which Chef Gill is renowned for. The couple have recently taken over at The Albert Inn at Mastin Moor near Chesterfield, which is a wonderfully decorated establishment featuring a beautifully carved solid wood bar and traditional fireplaces complemented by luxurious carpeting and original artworks. Of course, a full menu of Gill’s home cooked meals is provided and these include specials of the day. When The Mercury visited, specials included starters of mussels in white wine, or chicken goujons with garlic mayo dip,

followed by mains of spinach, mascarpone and roast tomato lasagne with mixed leaf salad, or an eight-ounce fillet steak with glazed balsamic mushrooms, sauté potatoes and vegetables, and a particular favourite of lamb shank in minted gravy with creamed mash and vegetables. Food is served Tuesday to Thursday from 4.00pm to 8.00pm, Friday and Saturday 12 noon to 2.pm and 5.00pm to 8.30pm. Sunday lunch is served from 12 noon to 3pm. To complement the meals there is a large selection of real ales on offer and non- diners, who are always welcome, can always enjoy a game of pool or darts and free wi-fi is available. Walkers are welcome to bring dogs into the non-dining area and in addition to the great interior; Gill and Steve have just had the

beer garden refurbished. There is also a large function room available for functions and Gill and Steve will also be introducing events in the near future. As Gill says, “We cater for all,” so visit soon and you will receive a right royal welcome at The Albert Inn. 6 Woodthorpe Road Mastin Moor Chesterfield S43 3BZ Tel: 01246 472 634

THE HUMAN LEAGUE GET SET TO DESCEND ON DONCASTER RACECOURSE South Yorkshire formed electronic new wave band The Human League, are set to descend on Doncaster Racecourse after an evening of racing this weekend. The trio, comprising vocalist and songwriter Philip Oakley, the only constant band member since 1977, and long-serving female vocalists Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley will take to the stage on Saturday 16 May following a packed seven race card at the Town Moor venue, South Yorkshire’s premier racecourse. The three-piece band, which evolved into a hugely successful synthpop band throughout the 1980s, has racked up five albums and eight UK Top 10 singles, selling more than 20 million records in total in a career spanning five decades. They are set to perform a raft of hit singles from their back catalogue including Don’t You Want Me, Human and Together in Electric Dreams in front of racecourse crowds. The Human League kick off a series of exciting live music events set to take place at Doncaster Racecourse over the summer. Kieron Gallagher, executive director, said: “The Human League was formed in Sheffield back in the late 70s so

it is only fitting that they get the Music Live series underway here in South Yorkshire this weekend. Hit singles like Don’t You Want Me and Together in Electric Dreams have stood the test of time and I am sure that they will get the crowds singing along as they soak up the atmosphere late into the evening here at Town Moor.” Doncaster Racecourse is set to host a series of live music performances throughout the summer, kicking off with The Human League on May 16, followed by UB40 performing after the racing on Ladbrokes Derby Day on June 06. Cockney Ska band Madness will perform on Saturday 27 June followed DJ Live featuring Jo Whiley and Vernon Kay on August 01. Iconic super group Spandau Ballet will bring the music series to a close when they perform after an evening of racing on August 15. Gallagher added: “We have a fantastic line up of musical entertainment to compliment the top sporting action over the summer months with UB40, Madness, Jo Whiley and Vernon Kay and Spandau Ballet all set to entertain the crowds.” Tickets for their summer evening of racing and The Human League live performance are on sale priced from £33 per person for the Grandstand Enclosure. The first race gets underway at 5.30pm and the last at 8.30pm with the live music performance following afterwards. For further information about Doncaster Racecourse or to book tickets call 01302 304200 or go to www.doncasterracecourse.co.uk

SOMETHING TO SHOUT ABOUT

Preview: Lulu, 23/05/15, Sheffield City Hall By Kt Evans

Gracing Sheffield’s City Hall with her hugely anticipated solo performance, pop sensation and UK legend Lulu is to hit The Steel City on 23rd May. Her first solo tour for over ten years, expect glitz, glamour and phenomenal showmanship from the Scottish performer who has been in the spotlight for a staggering fifty years. With a huge seven album repertoire to her name, Lulu is undeniably one of the UK’s finest exports. Her first album, “Gonks Go Beat” was released in 1965, followed on by “To Sir With Love,” in 1967, “Cucumber Castle” in 1970, “The Cherry Picker” in 1972, “Alicja” in 1982, “To Sir, With Love II” in 1996 along with her last release “Whatever Happened To Harold Smith” in 1999. Although the star hasn’t released music for a number of years, she still remains as relevant as ever. From TV appearences to presenting and hosting numerous shows, Lulu is also famed for winning The Eurovision Song Contest in 1969. Performing her spectacular “Boom Bang A Bang” written by Peter Warne, Lulu’s international hit reached number two on the UK charts in 1969. Speaking about the hit which brought her to fame, Lulu however has other ideas. “I know it’s a rotten song, but I won, so who cares? I’d have sung “Baa, Baa, Black Sheep” standing on my head if that’s what it took to win...I was just so glad I didn’t finish second like all the other Brits before me, that would have been awful.” However, back doing what she loves the most,

FRIDAY 15TH MAY

Lulu will return to the UK’s stages to grace audiences with her polished solo performance. With excitement and anticipation surrounding her tour, Lulu said: “I’ve always loved doing live gigs. After performing at the legendary BB King’s NYC last year and now starting to record the album, I’m re-invigorated and ready to get back on the road again. Even before I ever had a hit record I was doing three or four live gigs each week. And recently I’ve had a renewed sense of purpose. I just feel a compulsion to make this new record and, because of that, the songs are just pouring out.” Lulu is performing at Sheffield’s City Hall on 23rd May 2015. Tickets are on sale now and available through www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk or through the ticket hotline on 0114 2789789 and in person at the Sheffield City Hall Box Office.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

This week I’d chosen to fish a park lake, one with pristine, gently sloping grounds towards the banks of a pleasant water which was inhabited by scaley carp. I’d checked the weather, found it forecast bright spells and a mere hint of wind, so packed the van and set off in good spirits. On arrival, it was indeed bright and airy, so much so that I removed my jumper as it was indeed so pleasant! Bankside, the brolly system went up, just in case, and I set about making camp for the day. Three rods were perched atop my pod, my barrow covered with a waterproof sheet, and my unhooking mat tethered with a peg to stop it moving... As the hours passed, the air cooled and the wind started to become more noticeable. A ripple on the water changed direction as the wind shifted around and things began to get a uncomfortable. By now, I was holding onto my storm poles to try and keep the brolly in place, and I’d made the decision to pack up between gusts before any damage was done. The change in weather had been rapid, and I was already fighting a difficult battle! Other anglers, in the lee of trees or the far bank had already seen sense and disappeared, and I was alone in my struggles, as I held on tightly to prevent the brolly becoming a tangle of broken ribs and torn fabric. Suddenly, the unhooking mat tore the peg free and picked up speed as it flew across the ground. It has a large padded strap attached, and this wrapped around the arm of the covered barrow, tipping it over onto the rods perched delicately on top of their supports! The pod tipped all three rods into the water, one disappearing completely from sight into the murky depths, and the mat whipped free of the barrow and sailed towards the island at some speed! Bait boxes rolled towards the water as I leapt (cat like!) towards the remains of the pod and tried to recover the lost rod with my landing net... I managed to snare the sunken tackle, and as I dragged it towards me, I was already making plans to quickly wind in and try to cast over the fast disappearing mat before it got out of range. After three

casts, my heavy lead and sharp hook found a foothold on the mat, and against the wind, I dragged it towards the bank. That pesky strap snagged once again on the branches of a tree which protruded from the water, so I lay on the bank, wind whipping small branches and twigs around me, and tried to unship the attachment from the watery obstacle as the rain sheeted down.... Just as my fingers touched the padding, I became aware of a flapping noise, and despite concentrating on my mat, I knew I’d lost the battle... Retrieving the flyaway item, folding it in half and sitting on it, I surveyed a scene of devastation. My pod, upturned, lay across my rods, bait boxes and other accoutrements bobbed on windswept waters, out of reach and fast disappearing, my barrow and its contents had spilled across the grass, and my brolly, once a stalwart of many sessions, lay crushed and wrapped around the few possessions I had left; at least the storm poles stayed upright... Righting the barrow, I piled what I had left onto it, tied it down, and trudged back to the van before slinging it all inside. As I changed into dry clothes, the sky cleared and the sun came out to mock me with its warmth and loveliness... After checking the tyres and having a look for small red cars, (just in case!) I got into the van and turned for home, wet, miserable, and with a load of broken kit... I will be back next week, but I won’t believe the weather websites again... I’m sure they just put up random information designed to trick anglers!

MERCURY SPORT - SHEFFIELD UNITED

BLADES NEWS2014/15 CLOUGH REFLECTS ON SHRED AUCTION RAISES PLAYOFF SEMI FINAL £5OOO FOR BHF Nigel Clough tried to keep his thoughts in perspective, as United’s 63 game season came to a close following a remarkable night in the Sky Bet League One play-off semifinal second-leg against Swindon Town at the County Ground. The Blades, looking to overturn a onegoal deficit from the first-leg, shared ten goals with the Robins on a bizarre night in Wiltshire, despite United’s never-saydie mentality the attempted fightback fell agonisingly short, despite rallying from 3-0 and 5-3 down. Looking back, Clough remarked: “Over the course of the two games I don’t think

we deserved to lose the tie, we were very unfortunate to be defeated in the first-leg at Bramall Lane and ultimately that has cost us. “We conceded soft goals early on, but it was a weird first 20 minutes, we had three chances and so did Swindon, the difference is they scored three times. “The first goal is a screamer, but the other two are poor ones to give away especially in such a game, but Flynny heads over and Bob Harris shoots wide, if they go in it could have easily been 3-3. “We had to setup in an attacking manner which potentially leaves the defence exposed a bit more and they didn’t manage to cope as a unit. “The penalty was a big blow for us, we were just getting at them and looking to get within one goal, then they scored from effectively a long punt up the field, but we felt Craig Alcock was fouled by the lad Smith, again decisions went against

us.” The Gaffer continued: “At the other end we had plenty of possession and we said a goal at any time could change the game and it did. Everyone was understandably fearing the worst at 3-0, but we got two goals back quickly and suddenly it was all to play for again. “We were in it right until the end, we can’t ask for any more from the players, they showed great character. “We showed a tremendous amount of resolve, desire and determination though, not just to score five goals but to create the number of chances over the two legs, we could have won four matches we created that many, but ultimately you have to be ruthless and we haven’t been. “The lads and everyone in the dressing room are devastated because we have failed to achieve our aim of winning promotion, but if you are to fail you do so fighting and we did that until the final whistle which offers encouragement.”

The auctioning of match-worn shirts in memory of Blades fan David “Shred” Spencer has raised more than £5,000 for the British Heart Foundation (BHF). Following the Blades’ league game against Port Vale, where fans saw next season’s new strip for the first time, the players’ shirts were put up for auction on eBay. The unique shirts featured embroidery with the date of the game, name of opponent and BHF logo just above the Club badge. The fundraising initiative raised £5,500 in total with all proceeds going to the BHF, the charity that Shred’s family support. Prior to kick-off at the last home league game against Chesterfield, a cheque was presented on behalf of the Club to Carl Jones of the BHF by Co-Chairman Kevin McCabe, Operations Director Dave McCarthy and Training and Development Manager Sue Beeley. Dave McCarthy said: “We were amazed with the response to the auction from Blades fans. “The match-worn shirts are truly unique and the bidding on them was very competitive. We are delighted that their sale has raised more than £5,000 for a cause that is very close to the Club’s heart.”
