Weekly Wit With...
ALBERT SNODGRASS
My speed date asked me if I was into conspiracy theories. “Well, so-so,” I replied “That’s a pity,” she responded. “I couldn’t date a man who didn’t love them. Second question, who is your favourite Royal?” “Prince Trevor,” I said. “He’s the one they don’t talk about.” My wife accused me of being a complete fantasist. I think she’s just jealous that Taylor Swift keeps writing songs about me. I think I need to invest in a thinner watch strap. I’ve just tried to hail a taxi and a bloody kestrel landed on it. I made a kid cry in Asda earlier. I grabbed him by the shoulders, and screamed, “I’m YOU ... from the FUTURE!” Our local vicar has just been made redundant. His services were no longer required. I’m really hoping that nobody turns up for my ‘Claustrophobics Anonymous’ meeting tonight. Bagpipes sound exactly the same when you have finished learning them as when you started.

Let Me Entertain You... (2 HOUR SHOW) 50s & 60s GOLDEN OLDIES LET ME SING ALL YOUR FAVOURITES Although you usually prefer things to be clear cut, they may not be so this week. As your ruler Mars, Mercury and the Sun all link to Neptune, the fog surrounding one situation could be dense. For now, it’s probably best to bide your time and focus on what’s easily achievable. Call for more…
Red tape and some incompetence on the part of others could cause delays. Though you may find yourself treading water for a while, do what you can. Also, consider expanding your social network by linking with those who share your ideas and interests. Call for more astral advice…
Uncertainties about a decision can be dispelled by breaking down a key problem into manageable chunks. However, when it comes to dealing with people it can be a rather different story. Someone may be holding back information from you, delaying things further. Call for more…
It’s one of those weeks when the best advice is to go with the flow regarding projects and romantic opportunities. Plans may fall by the wayside and promises could be broken, leaving you at a loss. Use spare time to research your options regarding a novel idea. Call for more…
Though you may be keen to make a start, this week’s blend of energies suggests now is “not” the time. You’ll fare better if you can use the days ahead for brainstorming ideas and suggestions that might help you accomplish your goal. Call your prediction line for more news and advice…
An early Mars Neptune connection might coincide with lower energy levels. This can be a week to pace yourself rather than try to cram too much in. However, any hassles experienced might mean you also notice ways to change your routine and make it more productive. Call for more…

As Jupiter closes in on Uranus, opportunities can show up that put a brighter spin on career plans or ambitious goals. What seemed unlikely, now becomes entirely possible. Even so, a conflict of beliefs could be the reason you’re not as confident as you might be. Call for more astral advice…
You’ll probably find people charming and willing to please. In addition, imaginative ideas seem to be plentiful. Along with this, you’ll notice a logical bias as a Gemini focus encourages you to deal with facts and figures, rather than too many abstract strands. Call now for more advice…
Back up intuition with facts when dealing with finances or business plans that involve money. What appears to be a good deal might not be, with a need for extra caution applying throughout the week. A friend might require help and can look to you to provide it to them. Call for more…
This week it helps to be skeptical about a plan or contract that’s supposed to be a sure thing Aquarius. However, when it comes to your love life there’s a romantic theme showing that makes for a rather sizzling week. Call your prediction line for your love scope in full…
Monday’s Quarter Moon can cause you to doubt your judgment on a matter, putting you in a temporary spin. In fact, this week might coincide with missed opportunities in general, partly because your usual ability to make decisions could stall. Call now for more news and advice…

communities in Yorkshire and Humber. The research, carried out by Involve Yorkshire & Humber, shows that the region’s voluntary sector is seeing an unsustainable surge in demand for care, advice and support services since welfare reforms were introduced. The report details the impact of seven different benefit changes on the Yorkshire voluntary sector and the people and communities it supports. Findings highlight that as voluntary and community organisations strive to support local people and communities in poverty and need, they increasingly suffer the impact of too many demands and too little resource. Almost half have had their funding reduced. In particular, welfare changes are
health problems, young people and families. Sanctions, complicated IT processes and systems, and delays in benefits payments are all affecting vulnerable people badly. Some of the headline statistics include: • 80% of 222 organisations surveyed have seen increased demand since April 2013 • While almost half (48%) have seen their funding reduced during the same period • 95% of organisations reported negative impacts of welfare reforms • Food bank use has gone up 360% in just one year You can download the full report from the Involve website now: http://bit. ly/1DMgH3s

TOP SHOPPING DESTINATION UNVEILED IN SHEFFIELD
Sheffield City Council this week unveiled a bold new look for Sheffield city centre, which will transform it into a top shopping destination. Local people and business owners are invited to have their say on the plans for the Sheffield Retail Quarter, which also includes new offices, homes and restaurants. For the first time, detailed proposals have been released to give a flavour of what could be possible around Barkers Pool, Pinstone Street and Moorhead. The development is the missing piece between other popular areas in the city centre, including Fargate, The Moor and Division Street. It could create around 2500 jobs (during construction, and permanent) and bring in approximately an additional £300million a year to the city centre that people currently spend elsewhere. Sheffield City Council took control of the project after parting company with the developer of the former Sevenstone scheme. It has almost completed full land purchase, is seeking a development partner and is now consulting the public prior to a planning application this summer. The aim is to start construction in 2017 with the first stores open in 2019. Leigh Bramall, Deputy Leader, Sheffield City Council said: “We’re confident that this is very different to the previous scheme. The most successful city centres across the world are spaces where people can live, work, shop and socialise. They offer a great mix of independent and prime retailers, and encourage people to stay from morning to night. This is what we want for Sheffield, a flourishing city centre that is
not only a good day out, but also offers jobs and economic benefits to the whole city.” The proposed design reflects the rest of the city with attractive public squares, historic buildings and outdoor streetscapes. There could also be new car parks, bus and cycle routes and a new cycle hub. The scheme will incorporate the best of contemporary design and features, such as ‘click and collect’ facilities, whilst at the same time preserving the historic character of the area. The Council is working closely with English Heritage and will preserve Leah’s Yard and The Citadel (Salvation Army building), as well as facades along Pinstone Street and of the old Sunday School. The public are reminded that these are only proposals, and by taking part in the consultation process they can have the opportunity
to shape the next chapter in Sheffield’s history. Simon Green, Executive Director for Place, Sheffield City Council, said: “Everyone recognises that Sheffield’s City Centre needs a massive boost, which is why we are proposing this ambitious scheme. “The Sheffield Retail Quarter will attract investment, businesses and visitors to the city and help us to raise our profile regionally and nationally. “The retail quarter can play an important role in securing Sheffield’s economic future, and will complement exciting regeneration schemes such as Castlegate, The Moor, West Bar and the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District.” Full public consultation on the proposals will run until 19 June 2015.
READERS Hi Marc,
LETTERS
Just a quick note to say a big thank you to you and all at Mercury Newspaper for the brilliant prize I won for an evening at Doncaster Races followed by the brilliant Human League. It was an outstanding prize to win, attending the races is always a special occasion, dress to impress, back a couple of winners, what a superb way to spend a Saturday evening. If that was not enough then to be entertained by Sheffields' own The Human League was incredible. They performed their full set containing all the classic hits. Phil was in super form backed expertly as always by Susan and Joanne. I have read estimates there were upwards of 10,000 people, watching, dancing and generally just enjoying their performance. An absolutely fantastic evening, thank you again, it was an an honour to be part of the occasion. Kind regards Rob McRobbie
Superheroes raise over £20,000 for local children’s charity Superheroes all over South Yorkshire flew to local deprived children’s rescue last week, as they raised £20,070.22 for Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids. Nurseries, schools and businesses all over South Yorkshire grabbed their capes, tights and masks and prepared for battle on Friday the 15th May. Fundraising activities saw companies hold bake sales, walking laps around school fields, guess the number of jelly beans in a jar and even a Superhero Themed evening event. SIG UK Logistics was one of the many companies who held a Superhero Theme fancy dress day for work in aid of the campaign, whereas Halfway junior school held a fun, fancy dress day with a raffle, sweepstake, face painting and prizes for the best homemade costume. Alongside this, two lucky children, one from Halfway Junior School and the other from Gooseacre Primary, won the prize of their dreams as they were given a free ride in Transformers very own Bumblebee car! Bumblebee took them to and from school, then left to visit a number of businesses around South Yorkshire, before he finally parked up at Meadowhall to allow all his super fans to get a photo. The money raised will go to local deprived, disabled and disadvantaged children in South Yorkshire, one of which will be 8 year old Lewis from Sheffield. Lewis was sadly diagnosed with
Leukaemia last year where his family’s lives were turned upside down. Having to put their annual camping trips on hold, Lewis spent months in the Children’s ward receiving treatment. However, thanks to the money raised for Cash for Kids, £200 will be donated to Cavendish Cancer Care, a support charity for people living with cancer, where Lewis attended alongside his Mum, Jessica. Jessica said: “The support, understanding and care of the Cavendish staff have been amazing. Our little boy has been incredibly brave and is doing really well. He is even attending Play Therapy sessions at the Centre to support him through difficult treatments and to enable him to express himself in the childlike way he knows.” The funds donated to the Centre will be used for a wide range of toys to use during these play therapy sessions, so children like Lewis can get the most out of their recovery and time there. Allan Ogle, Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids charity manager, said: ““With an incredible amount of support from schools, businesses and Hallam FM listeners, they have proven just how generous and creative the people from South Yorkshire are. Not only has everybody that has taken part had an incredible amount of fun, the money raised will go to supporting children where we live. I’d like to say a massive thank you to everybody who dressed up, held events and donated, you are all Superheroes!” For more pictures from Superhero Day, visit: hallamfm.co.uk/charity or visit @hallamcash4kids on Twitter. You can still donate by texting HALLAM to 70070 to donate £5.

YOUNG ‘UNS DELVE DEEPER COME TO TOWN AGAIN THIS BANK
The Young’uns are a force of nature on stage and bring their Radio 2 Folk Award winning show to The Greystones on Saturday the 29th of May. Their irrepressible humour, infectious love for harmony singing, passion for storytelling and commitment to maintaining the tradition of social commentary have quickly made them one of the most sought after acts on the English folk scene with the rare ability to make audiences laugh and cry in equal measure. In 2013 they gave up their jobs and took to the road to share their love of singing and laughter with whomever would listen. Since then they have performed alongside Billy Bragg at Glastonbury, opened the main stage at Cambridge Folk Festival, recorded a memorable live session on BBC Radio 2, held a host of intimate rural singing weekends, visited dozens of schools and appeared at over 40 festivals at home and abroad. A decade after first burping their way through a sea shanty as inebriated teenagers at Stockton Folk Club, The Young’uns (so called that night because they were the youngest people at the club by over 40 years) have developed their craft, absorbed the musical heritage of their native North East, sought inspiration from the hundreds of performers they have heard and are now preparing to take their music to a much wider audience than they ever imagined. 2015 sees the release of their 4th album and a major tour to celebrate their 30th birthdays. Inspired by the actions of a group of Stockton residents who chased a Benefits Street film crew from their doors, The Young’uns new album Another Man’s Ground celebrates working class heroes of the past and present with powerful and poignant tales of struggle, poverty and peace. The Young ‘Uns Saturday 29th May The Greystones, Greystone Road S11
HOLIDAY SUNDAY
After an amazing party on the terrace at Bloo88, West Street on Easter Sunday, Delve Deeper return with another great line-up, with more of the same, Spring Bank Holiday Sunday 24th May. The last event which celebrated the launch of their new record label was headlined by Sheffield’s very own Groove Assassin (whose release on their label comes out at the beginning of June) and was packed from early on right until the finish and this Sunday’s event is building up to provide more of the same. This time around the headlinder is the excellent Nottingham based DJ & producer, Dudley Strangeways. Dudley’s love of the groove and dedication to quality are bound by his own eclectic interpretation of House Music; timeless, hedonistic and clinical but with soul to boot. On the production front, Dudley’s reputation has rocketed in the short time since his first solo release in 2009. His trademark driving, edgy house is pressed to wax by labels such as Tomoki Tamura’s Holic Trax, Klasse, Black Key and Delayed Audio, finding favour with the likes of Xpress 2, Ethyl, Iron Curtis, Fish Go Deep, The Mountain People & DJ Sneak. He has also released tracks on Moda Black, Albion, Rogue Society and a Todd Terry remix on Freole Records. Supporting Dudley on the night will be a huge wealth of local talent including Dilate Records’ Evans, former Bed Resident Dino, Dave Hardy, Solid State, Louis Clarke and Delve Deeper’s very own Liam C, Jenny Fu & Daptan. Best of all this massive lineup is provided all for FREE! with Bloo88 also providing a huge range of cocktails as well as their famous stone baked pizzas for when you need a little re-charge from the action. The event will again be powered by the excellent Danger Noize Audio, sounds you can feel. Do not miss the oportunity to catch one of the UK’s most on point deep house dj/producers on the terrace, here in Sheffield.

PBS & THE RACE FOR SPACE Review: Public Service Broadcasting Venue: The Foundry - 28/4/15 By Bunsen Bob
Public Service Broadcasting are comprised of J. Willgoose, Esq and Wrigglesworth. They play instrumental music accompanied by samples of old public information broadcasts, propaganda and news events... And it works magnificently. Before I continue, I must declare an interest. I have recently become slightly obsessed with the Moon landings and early space exploration in general. It just so happens that PSB’s latest release is an album dedicated to this very same topic entitled, The Race for Space. It’s as if they knew. So, I was more than intrigued to find out how their uniquely atmospheric style was delivered on stage. They opened with Sputnik, their dark techno driven track about the first man made satellite to orbit the Earth and as a flashing, spookily realistic mock up of the original craft emerged onto stage it was clear that PSB can hit the visual notes as well as the audio ones. The set consisted of a back and forth rally of songs from their two albums (Inform-Educate-Entertain was their debut in 2015) and the changes of pace and scope kept the packed audience intrigued and appreciative. The only live vocals were provided by support act, The Smoke Fairies on the gorgeously haunting Valentina which paid recognition to Valentina
Tereshkova, the first woman in space. After the old fashioned human voice experience was complete, the duo, backed by fine musicians as well as a dancing astronaut at one point, powered through a version of Spitfire, Go! and The Other Side, the latter featuring an almost silent segment in which we waited anxiously for the Apollo 8 crew to return into radio frequency from the dark side of the Moon. When they did I punched the air as the soaring music nailed the relief, achievement and scale of the feat that was achieved nearly 50 years ago. Such is the power of Public Service Broadcasting. The encore included the power funk onslaught of Gargarin followed by a sombre dedication to the victims of the Nepal Earthquake with the final song of the night, Everest. I honestly don’t think you’ll see a live performance like this anywhere, not on this planet anyway...

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker
At last! I’ve found some fish! After recently joining the team as a consultant at Stoke-on-Trent Go-Outdoors, I’ve been popping in regularly to get to know the staff and keep abreast of developments as the store continues to push the brand new angling section. As a result, it was arranged that the Manager, Dave, and I would try and get out for a few hours to investigate a local fishery and perhaps tempt a few ourselves! We arrived at the bank to be met with changeable conditions; one minute it was bright, warm sunshine which saw the carp in the upper layers, the next, it was cloudy, with a bitter breeze which saw them sink out of sight again! I chose to fish ‘The Method’ on one rod, a tactic I know works at this fishery, and a short zig on the other, hoping to intercept a bite as the fish moved through the thermal layers. Dave had two rods out, both using bottom baits and a small pva bag; a sensible approach on what for him was an unknown water. Within fifteen minutes, the alarm under Dave’s rod signalled a proper run, and he lifted into a low double figure carp. His light rods made playing the fish great fun, and I settled down to take some pictures of the fight for subsequent publication on the Go-Fishing UK social media pages as he brought it to the waiting net. Catch shot completed, the carp was returned safely and the rod recast. The next alarm to sound was mine as the method feeder did the business, but unfortunately, this resulted in slimy bream of around 3lb; not really what I was after, but at least I hadn’t blanked! My short zig rig was the next to go. I’d tied it about three feet long, which left my Mainline Essential IB bait about a foot below the surface of this shallow pool. I’m a big fan of this bait, its bright yellow colour and high leakage rate often see an almost instant result if there are fish in the swim, so it’s one I haver great faith in. The lead discharged from the lead clip (not my intention if I’m honest!) and the fish was safely landed after a spirited battle which resulted in another low double figure carp. I tie this rig with Vardis Tackle fluorocarbon, a size 6 chod

hook and a bait screw purely to make mounting the bait easier. The tag end of the fluorocarbon is passed back through the eye of the hook to give a loop to mount the bait on, then ‘blobbed’ to ensure it stays put. It’s a simple rig which works well… Dave landed another carp; he had witnessed my fish take the zig rig, and after seeing carp in the upper layers, quickly changed his rig to match which proved almost instantly irresistible to a third low double carp. Shortly after, a second carp hit my bait, and yet another double hit the scales. Things slowed a little for the next few hours, the weather became a little more varied, and the carp retired to deeper water , but eventually, Dave managed to trick a take on a surface bait and banked his third carp. The results were in and we declared a draw; I’d had a brace of carp, Dave had caught three, but my bream was graciously counted to make it three each. Rewardingly, a change of tactics had meant the difference between a result and a blank, as many other anglers around the lake, who had stuck resolutely to bottom baits, had failed to register a bite. I’m not a huge fan of the zig rig, but this week, I’m glad I stuck with it!

CHARITIES TO ATTEND OWLS IN THE PARK Sheffield Wednesday’s annual family community day, Owls in the Park is set to be the biggest in the event’s history and can announce more charities than ever will be attending the day. Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, St. Luke’s Hospice, The Royal Society for the Blind and Support Dogs are just a selection of Sheffieldbased charities that will be in attendance at the family event. The club is extremely proud to facilitate the charities in their fundraising appeals and hope that as much money as possible is raised on the day. Sheffield Unit Air Cadets, Sheffield Futures and Cavendish Care will be attending as well as the Sheffield Eagles foundation, the Royal Navy and Royal Marines and Diabetes UK Sheffield. Around 20 charities are expected at the event that attracts more than 15,000 people throughout the day. The charities will be holding fundraising activities from lucky dips to obstacle courses to raffles to Support Dogs holding the largest dog show in South Yorkshire! Last year’s event raised in excess of £5,000 so we hope this year, we can not only match that but raise even more for the beneficiaries. Owls in the Park 2015 is free to attend and takes place on Sunday 19 July, starting at 11.00am and finishing at 5:30pm.
