WELCOME TO THE COURSE OF FUN
Fresh off the road from their sell out 2014 arena tour, Madness are now set to perform at Doncaster Racecourse on Saturday, June 27 as part of the UK’s greatest ever live open air tour this summer. The band said, “Come see, come see! The world’s strongest band perform incredible feats live! Marvel as Madness lift an enormous set of polished pop songs high in the air, single handed! The UK’s biggest open air tour ever! Rolling into a town near you, soon.” The tour, which runs from May to September 2015, will take in 19 shows at some of the greatest sporting venues around the country, including racecourses, cricket grounds, rugby and football stadiums. These shows will offer the concertgoers the unique experience of an outdoor event with a festival vibe, set within these the iconic huge green spaces. Madness will be performing inimitable quirky pop classics such as “House of Fun”, “Baggy Trousers” and “My Girl”, iconic songs that are guaranteed to draw you in, get you dancing and singing along. The band will also be performing some of their new songs/material, their first new recordings in three years. Kieran Gallagher, executive director at Doncaster Racecourse said the concert was a real coup for the venue: “It’s fantastic to have signed Madness for our Music Live event on June 27. They always put on an incredible show; they really are electrifying to watch and their classic hits appeal to music fans
of all ages, particularly with their revival in recent years since performing as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. With a packed afternoon of top-class racing taking place beforehand it’s going to be a great event for people to come out to enjoy and kickstart their summer. We are expecting sell out figures of 20,000 and anticipate that this event will firmly secure Doncaster Racecourse as one of the region’s premier music venues.” A band of the people, who inject fun into everything they do, the tour promises to be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see one of the greatest bands in the world play at Doncaster Racecourse. I requested a vault and a speaker be delivered to my house. They arrived safe and sound. I never wanted to believe that my Dad was stealing from his job as a road worker. But when I got home, all the signs were there. I told my friend that she drew her eyebrows on too high. She looked surprised. Doctor: “I am not exactly sure of the cause. I think it could be due to alcohol.” Patient: “That’s ok. I will come back when you are sober.” I am in the army and my sergeant said to me, “I didn’t see you at camouflage training this morning!” To which I replied, “Oh, thank you very much, sir!” We never played violent video games when I was growing up. Just family-friendly board games with questions like, “Who murdered this guy with a pipe?” My dad got a selfie stick for his phone. He can now hold it far enough away to read text messages. I once froze some orange flavoured fizzy drink to make a lolly. Fanta stick. One thing I found out last night. Never try making spaghetti on toast after you’ve taken acid. That opens up a whole can of worms. My friend said to me today, “Do you think history really repeats itself?” I replied, “You asked me this question yesterday and my answer was no, and it’s still no.”

Thursday 2nd July 2015 @ Quaker meeting House, 1pm to 5pm: Independence • Voice • Voluntary services • Activism: What next in Sheffield? In 2015 the National Coalition for Independent Action (NCIA) launched the final report of its ‘Inquiry into the Future of Voluntary Services’. This provided a blistering critique of the systemic threats posed to the values, work and freedom of the sector. NCIA challenged voluntary groups to take urgent action to fight for the rights of the people they serve, protect their independence and resist the privatisation of public services. Two years earlier NCIA published the findings of its inquiry into local activism and dissent - ‘Here We Stand.’ This documented how local activists exerted an active democratic and egalitarian influence with growing resistance to cuts and austerity by organising to: safeguard public services, fight privatisation, enforce community rights, protect the natural world, create alternatives to neo-liberal doctrines and offer solidarity to each other and their communities. After nearly 10 years NCIA is now moving on. So far, at least three initiatives in which it has been involved look set to continue: Localism Watch Update (an online update which exposes how ‘localism’ disenfranchises grassroots initiatives); Keep Volunteering Voluntary (a campaign to persuade voluntary organisations stop using the government’s punitive workfare scheme); and establishing Critical Studies in Voluntary Action – a new journal to challenge thinking about the voluntary sector. The Roadshows aim to do three things: first, to share and elaborate on the learning from NCIA’s critical work over the last few years; second, to provide a space

The Access Guide to Sheffield, provided by DisabledGo, is all set to launch at the 10 June event. DisabledGo surveyors have personally visited and assessed around 1000 different places across Sheffield like restaurants, leisure centres, libraries, theatres, parks, public transport, hotels and many more. for articulating what this means within the local context and what can be done; and third determine what future links between participants, organisations, staff, volunteers, activists, networks can be developed locally. The Roadshows will include input and discussion led by Andy Benson and Penny Waterhouse from NCIA. There will be sessions with input and facilitation to draw out the local context through small and large group work. Finally there will be the opportunity to develop action planning on future routes for local networking between organisations, groups or individuals. Convivial time to talk and share informally is part of the plan! These events are aimed at organisations or individuals engaged in voluntary action or services in informal, small or medium sized voluntary organisations. It’s for people committed to maintaining independent voluntary action, campaigning or advocacy. There is also a welcome for activists, those engaged in reciprocal below the radar work and for people engaged in political (not party political) action. Others who are engaged in work that is allied to the above aims are also encouraged to take part. This is a collaboration between NCIA and Local Hosts in at least four locations: Sheffield, Durham, Manchester and Brighton To read the NCIA reports please go to http://www.independentaction.net For further info contact: Mike Aiken (NCIA’s Transition Lead) in conjunction with Chilypep and Sheffield VCF networks mike@independentaction.net or to book places contact: stefanie.pearson@ chilypep.org.uk

The 22-year-old and friends are hosting the fundraiser for Meningitis Now at the Middlewood Road venue on Saturday, May 30. The main event is a sell-out 16-team, five-aside World Cup-style tournament, guaranteed to raise around £1,300 alone for Meningitis Now. Adam said: “Meningitis is a horrific disease that can devastate not only the sufferer, but their family and community. “The fundraiser is coming together nicely, there will be something for everyone – all for a great cause. “We want the community involved, so appeal to everyone to come or donate raffle prizes, especially local businesses, to boost the amount raised. “Any signed sports shirts or memorabilia are greatly appreciated.”

STUDENT WORKPLACEMENT RAISES OVER £2000 FOR CHARITY IN BARNSLEY FASHION SHOW Last month, The Civic hosted a Fashion Show fundraising event in partnership with Barnsley Hospice. Events Management student Emily Ritchie successfully managed the event as part of her work placement at The Civic. The two charities joined forces to bring the ladies of Barnsley a great ‘Girls Night Out’ at The Civic, with a fashion show and shopping from Barnsley Market’s very own The Closet Queen, along with items from the Barnsley Hospice Charity shops. Table tickets for the event sold-out almost instantly and the event raised £2025 altogether for The Civic and Barnsley Hospice. Emily Ritchie, 21-year-old undergraduate from the University of Chester (and Barnsley resident),
began her work placement at The Civic in September 2014, as “It was the only placement opportunity that I had seen that interested me and would be beneficial to me and my degree.” Since then Emily has been putting her academic learning into practice and has become a valued member of The Civic’s team. With the support of Helen, Emily project managed the Fashion Show fundraising event; “I was the main point of contact for The Civic and organised the set up on the day, all of which had to be done within a strict budget". Emily continues: “Being involved in the partnership with Barnsley Hospice has allowed me to work alongside experienced industry professionals, who provided valuable guidance and advice.” Organising The Civic’s first fundraising event in partnership with Barnsley Hospice was not without its difficulties for Emily; “Setting up the event on the day was challenging” Emily explains, “I wanted to make sure that everyone had a good view of the catwalk… this experience has
enabled me to build confidence in dealing with a wide range of people, and identify my strengths and weaknesses." Emily is extremely proud of her achievements, and with the substantial funds raised. She explains: “This money will help The Civic become more sustainable, ensuring they continue to provide high quality arts experiences for the people of Barnsley. It will also allow Barnsley Hospice to continue offering specialist care and support.” Emily’s next project as part of her work placement at The Civic, is to help organise the launch event for the Nick Sharratt Exhibition: Pirates, Pants and Wellyphants on Saturday 27 June. “I will be working in the Gallery@ on what I expect will be a busy day, and the main audience will be young children and families. It will be a new challenge for me, but I am really looking forward to it!” For more information and to book visit www.barnsleycivic.co.uk or call the Box Office on 01226 327000.

ROCKING ALL OVER THE ARENA
It was announced last week that Britain’s best-loved rockers Status Quo will undertake an 11 date Winter tour. The Accept No Substitute UK Tour 2015 will play the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield on 7th December 2015 with special guests The Wilko Johnson Band featuring Dylan Howe & Norman Watt-Roy. This tour will see the band returning to their fully electric
dates not to be missed. Francis Rossi said, “We’ve had such a blast with the ‘Aquostic’ style, but for this tour we are going back to the sound that defines us. I read in the paper that we were breaking up; but we’re not finished yet I can tell you!” Rick Parfitt added, “I guess the name of the tour speaks for itself, but this is full-throttle nononsense Status Quo”.
This tour sees one of Britain’s all-time great bands gearing up to do what they do best. Status Quo are still more than match-fit, and this game is not over – ‘Accept No Substitute’. This show will be taking place in the Motorpoint Arena’s Steel Hall – an intimate theatre style set up with the a 4,000 capacity. This will be Status Quo’s fifteenth show at the Arena since they first played the venue in 1991 a show that saw Quo enter the Guinness Book of Records when they played four British shows in 11 hours and 11 minutes. The ‘Rock ’Til You Drop’ event playing four UK Arena’s in a day started here in Sheffield, then Glasgow, Birmingham & Wembley. Tickets purchased on-line and through the Arena Ticket Hotline on 0114 256 56 56 are priced £46.75 & £43.45 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena Box Office are priced £44.63 & £41.48 including booking fee. Tickets are now on general sale.
Ecclesall provides Alaskan terrain in abundance for Nonna’s midnight husky racer
huskies is more than matched by his Italian cooking skills so we’d couldn’t wish for a better member of staff!” John Lam’s partner Laura Coe, a waitress at Nonna’s, is also a big fan of huskies and husky racing. She inspired his initial passion for the sport when they first met. Laura has been involved with sled dogs since the age of six and is now undecided whether she wants more dogs or a baby!
Ecclesall Road’s Nonna’s is well known for its love of cycling but a sport of a very different kind is creating a buzz in its kitchen. When chef John Lam is not wowing customers with his Italian cuisine he’s spending every waking hour being pulled around the local parks and countryside by his two Siberian huskies. The 28-year-old is one of the country’s foremost husky racers and is by no means put off by the lack of all-year snow in the area.
set up after the huge success of the ‘Aquostic (Stripped Bare)’ and ‘Aquostic! Live At The Roundhouse’ albums and tour. Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Andy Bown, John ‘Rhino’ Edwards & Leon Cave will plug back in and bring their thunderous electric live show back to the nation’s venues. Packed with hits, both new and old, taken from that unbelievable back catalogue, this is a series of
He trains perched on a customised scooter and only goes out late a night - regularly at midnight - in warmer months to ensure cooler temperatures for his two dogs. A good run can be 12 miles-plus with the two dogs pulling him at speeds topping 20mph. Both his Siberian huskies - Kato and Meisha - are rescue dogs. John Lam says Siberian huskies are a fashionable to own but few people know how to handle them so a large percentage end up being
abandoned. He said: “They’re a highly intelligent dog that’s specifically bred for cold climates and working. They’re not your normal pet by any means. They’re very energetic and they need to be allowed to burn their excess energy off. People don’t realise what they’re taking on.” John Lam takes his huskies to the annual meeting at Avimore in Scotland and he recently came 13th in his first competitive competition. But his ultimate dream is to tackle Alaska’s annual 1000 mile Iditarod event Nonna’s proprietor Maurizio Mori said: “People regularly refer to John as the ‘husky man’ in Ecclesall as they’re that used to seeing him being pulled around by his dogs. It’s not something you see every day in Ecclesall! “And I’m glad to say his passion for his
Youdan Trophy plans on the menu at the Hilton Hotel
Sheffield is set to celebrate its footballing heritage at a starstudded sporting dinner in a few weeks time. The Hilton Hotel at Victoria Quays will be the venue for the event that signals the final countdown to the Youdan Trophy - an international tournament that is promising to bring the global stars of the future to the Steel City. The competition is celebrating the oldest tournament in the world - the Football Challenge Cup presented by Thomas Youdan Esq. that pre-dates the FA Cup by a full four years and was played only once at Bramall Lane in 1867. Speakers at the dinner include celebrated Sheffield referee Keith
Hackett and former Sheffield Wednesday striker David Hirst with more names to be announced. Malcolm Lord will be MC. The Youdan Trophy Sporting Dinner is set to take place on Wednesday, July 1st, at 7pm. Tickets are just £27.50 per person or just £26 per person for tables of ten or twelve. Tickets can be booked by emailing info@youdantrophy.com Sheffield-based You-Are-TheRef.com, which is the world’s leading independent authority and education platform for match officials, are behind the creation of the tournament that is set to see invited youth teams at under 14 level from as far away as Australia
competing. The original Football Challenge Cup presented by Thomas Youdan Esq. was the brainchild of Thomas Youdan - a self-made Victorian who was behind Sheffield’s celebrated Alexandra Theatre. The Youdan Trophy is set to take place from Monday, July 27 to Friday, July 31. The final will take place at Bramall Lane on July 31. Glasgow Celtic, Glasgow Rangers, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic, Brentford, AFA Nerang Eagles (Gold Coast) and FAB Academy are set to compete at the event. Free tickets for the July 31 final and Bramall Lane are available from www.youdantrophy.com
SHEFFIELD PAWNBROKER SHINES ON CHANNEL 4 SERIES These days there seems to be a passion for TV programmes about posh pawnbrokers and how the rich and famous buy, sell and pawn their Chanel bags, Gucci watches and the like. Posh Pawn based in Hatton Garden, London - Beverly Hills Pawn set in - yes - Beverly Hills and now we have our very own Posh Pawnbrokers based on London Road in Sheffield. Dan Hatfield is the owner of London Road Jewellers, a 31 year old single guy, who has taken on the reigns of the family business, established back in 1993 by Dan’s Grandfather and Mother. Dan had no intention of going into the family business! He studied at Leeds University and went on to work for a large banking recruitment company as a headhunter. Around 7 years ago he was offered a very lucrative job in Australia. However Dan’s Granfather had retired and his Mum was running the shop. She needed a little help and asked if he would stay for a while and help her out - needless to say he never took the job in Oz and he is now running the family business, without any regrets! I asked Dan what was the most unusual item that someone had pawned. He found this an easy one! One of his regulars used to come to the shop every week and unscrew his gold tooth and pawn it for his weekend beer money. This went on week after week until one day he didn’t come to claim it back. Dan kept that tooth for over 2 years and eventually the owner re-appeared but didn’t need it anymore as he
had a new porcelain tooth. The most expensive item pawned at the shop was a bright red Ferrari. Even the rich sometimes have a cash flow problem! I asked Dan how he became a television star. He explained that he was approached by a production company who literally bombarded Dan until he finally gave in and agreed, and filming started in December last year. Filming lasted for over 5 months and contrary to popular belief the owners receive no payment! Dan however wanted to change the public’s perspective of pawnbrokers, to show that they are not all unscrupulous rip off merchants who pray on the needy and vulnerable. Dan is a down to earth guy, who loves working within the community. He supports local charities close to his heart including Alzheimers Society and St Lukes Hospice and he is a thoroughly nice bloke! Posh Pawnbrokers is now showing on Channel 4 every week day at 4 o’clock. Spread the word, watch the show and you will be thoroughly entertained. Hopefully there will be a second series to follow!

SLAM DUNK 2015
Review: Slam Dunk 2015 By Kt Evans
Slam Dunk...or as it has fondly been renamed as Slam Drunk once again hit Leeds City Centre for its one stop shop of ultimate musical madness. Held on 23rd May within a host of venues across the city, the sold out festival truly confirmed its status as one of the best one day events on the entire Summer’s calendar. Although our heavy heads on bank holiday Monday may have suggested we enjoyed the day a little too much, it’s pretty safe to say...our hellish hangover was sure worth it. What makes Slam Dunk so damn special? Aside from bumping into friends old and new, Slam Dunk is all about undertaking your own musical exploration, discovering fresh talent and giving your music taste a much needed update. From hardcore to pop punk and everything else in between, the beauty of the event is the exposure bands get whilst also ensuring fans are truly satisfied. Local bands to internationally recognised groups, we challenge anybody to not have a blast at Slammy D. A beautiful day meant that the 5000 plus ticket holders were in for a mighty treat. Kicking processions of with an almighty boot, hardcore punks Trash Talk riled up all who witnessed on the Impericon Stage. Opening up with killer track “Dogman,” their half hour set comprised of tracks from all three of the bands underground studio albums. “Manifest Destination,” “Well Of Souls” and “Lepers To Feed The Lepers” followed, which saw lead vocalist Lee Spielman spending most of the set slap bang in the middle of a ridiculous circle pit. However, it needs to be noted that Mr Speilman really does not appreciate a selfie...it’s a well known fact that Trash Talk do not like phones at their concert (social media do not need to know absolutely everything!) which meant that a number of selfie sticks were crushed in the process. Oops. Onto the main stage with the turn of Lower Than Atlantis to tantalise the ear drums of over 1000 viewers. A surprise track within their forty minute playlist, we’ve seen Lower Than Atlantis on a number of occasions and never heard them perform “Deadliest Catch” before...until Slam Dunk 2015. Bigger and better than we ever could have of expected live, this killer track ensured crowds were well and truly satisfied...Mercury included! Along with Lower Than Atlantis, Don Broco also delivered on a colossal scale on the main stage. Opening up with new track “Money, Power, Fame,” their set comprised of brand new, unreleased hits, alongside belters from the four pieces debut album “Priorities.” Hits “Hold On,” “Automatic” and “Whole Truth” got audiences throwing shapes, with
older material undeniably achieving the best crowd reaction – and you can’t blame us...a concoction of rock verses groove undertones, the band strike the balance between pop, rock and alternative exceptionally well. And obviously, everyone loves a dance right?! Over onto The Monster Stage where Sheffield metalcore clan While She Sleeps seized their audience with brute force and determination. Having recently released their massively anticipated studio album “Brainwashed” in March 2015, the five piece delivered a five star performance with old and new material. Steel City anthem “Seven Hills” plays homage to the band’s hometown whilst “The North Stands For Nothing” shoves two fingers up to anybody who would turn their noses up to the North...sounds like the Game Of Thrones plot? Put it this way, Ned Stark would have difficulty fighting his way through While She Sleeps’ mosh pit...body armour should have been a necessity. Architects are a group who never ever fail to deliver whilst performing live. Their music is as fierce as it is anthemic, winning over the crowds from the opening track “Gravedigger.” Undeniably the highlight of the entire thirteen track set, “Naysayer” draws together intense electronic undertones with wrenching metalcore riffs, succumbing to a belter of a track. Closing with “These Colours Don’t Run,” if you have yet to catch Architects live, the Southern clan are set to undertake a full European tour throughout July and August. Check out the bands official website for full details. To the mighty headliners and a group who are no strangers to performing on a gigantic scale... You Me At Six. Having previously announced that their headlining set was going to include a number of tracks from their 2007 release “Take Off Your Colours,” the audience certainly were not disappointed. Opening up with “The Truth Is A Terrible Thing,” very early track “Save It For The Bedroom” sent the crowd into oblivion, whilst “Stay With Me” got us all in the mood to hug the nearest stranger. A twenty minute break in proceedings occurred however due to a medical emergency (credit to the band who held off their performance, saying “we’re certainly not going to put anybodies life at risk just so that we can play a few more songs”) the group picked up where they left off with “Nobody Does It Better” and “The Consequence,” closing with 2011 favourite “Underdog.” A group with charisma, copious amount of talent but more over, respect for their audience, You Me At Six will forever remain one of the countries most adored live bands. Slam Drunk...see you again next year.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker
What a crazy week… I have managed to get out on the bank, a day visit to a club water which was unsuccessful save for a solitary run… which I missed! Every other angler on the bank (and there were plenty of them!) failed to get so much as a single indication, so I suppose I should be grateful… Elsewhere, I’ve been spending much of my time at GO-Outdoors, or to be more precise, the brand new GO-Fishing section within the Stoke store as we prepare for the official opening on May 28th. It will be a grand affair, with Sean Asnby, World Champion angler, a Savage Gear pro-angler in the shape of Ant Glascoe Jr, Marukyu bait guru Roy Marlow, England U-21 angler Lee Thornton, and Garbolino match ace Darren Cox all in attendance, free food and drink, a superb charity auction to help an angling charity, loads of demonstrations, advice and lots more; free food and drink too! I’ve also been responsible for organising an exciting new carp competition, solely for customers of GOFishing. All carp anglers who pass through the doors this week will be invited to register their interest in our twenty four hour carp match on June 27th, and get this, it won’t cost a penny! It will be a completely free event, all the lucky anglers have to do is turn up on the day and fish. All of those who register will be put in the hat, and the first thirty five drawn will be invited to premier fishery Baden Hall in Staffordshire for a free twenty four hour session; best of all, the winning angler will walk away with a cool £1000 cash prize! Where else can you find a match like that? The intention is to run another match for our usual match anglers too, so keep an eye on the GO-Fishing social media channels for forthcoming details… we expect that to be free to enter too, and it will also have a great cash prize!

If you have any local sports news please send an email to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk
My role is purely social media and promotional work on behalf of the new concept store in Stoke. So far, the signs are good, with plenty of positive feedback and some very clever suggestions to help us on our way. We are already running plenty of free prize giveaways to boost interaction, and these have been replicated in store with an assortment of goodies up for grabs. Make a purchase and customers will offered a free raffle ticket on which to put a contact telephone number. At the end of the month, we’ll draw one out and the lucky winner will receive an item of tackle to say thank you for choosing GO-Fishing; this month, a large padded unhooking mat is up for grabs, next month it will be something different. If customers submit their catch shots to the Community Wall in store, our favourite receives a superb Sticky Baits award comprising boilies, pop ups and glug, and if you submit a picture to our online gallery, there is also a prize up for grabs, so in addition to GO-Fishing being a new retail experience, we’re also trying to have some fun and give our patrons the opportunity to join in too… I hope you’ll pop in to see if you are passing!

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill wants to see Caolan Lavery replicate his Owls form on the international stage. The 22-year-old striker has been called-up to the squad for the friendly with Qatar and Euro 2016 qualifier against Romania. O’Neill has been impressed by Lavery, who has made significant strides through the ranks at Hillsborough since joining the club 2012. He said: “Caolan has come back from injury and forced his way into the first team at Sheffield Wednesday. “He is a young striker, very quick and works hard. “It’s another opportunity for a young player to replicate his form for country as he does for his club. “He is a young player who we have had in the Under-21 set-up, he works very hard and going forward, we are going to need the likes of these players to perform for us.”

Sheffield United today announce that Nigel Clough, the Club’s First Team Manager, and his Management staff, are to leave Bramall Lane with immediate effect following the decision by the Board that a change in direction was necessary for the forthcoming season. The search for the Club’s new First Team Manager will now start and it is hoped that this will result in identifying and recruiting the right candidate within a relatively short period of time. The Club would like to place on record its thanks to Nigel, as well as his backroom staff of Gary Crosby, Andy Garner, Martin Taylor, Simon Clough, Michael Forsyth and Matt Brown for their contribution to the Club during their time at Bramall Lane and wish them all well for their future.

TRIBUTE TO WOODY Sheffield United co-owner Kevin McCabe has paid tribute to Blades legend Alan Woodward, who died on Thursday in America, aged 68. “First and foremost our thoughts are with Alan’s family. This is a sad loss. Woody was a real fans’ favourite, a dynamic footballer who had speed, the ability to put in a great cross and, of course, a thumping shot,” said Mr McCabe, speaking from abroad where he is on business. “As a youngster growing up in Sheffield I was fortunate to see Woody many, many times. His partnership with TC (Tony Currie) was simply outstanding. They terrorised defences in the top flight of English football. “Another special quality was that he was one of ours. He was one of several local lads at that time who came up through the ranks all of whom went on to make a real impression at Bramall Lane. His name is still sung by our fans. For supporters young or old he will long live in our memories as a Blades legend,” added Kevin, who met up with Alan again last year in Sheffield at the Club’s 125th anniversary celebrations. “It was great to see and meet Woody again. One of my footballing heroes who will always have a special place in the history of Sheffield United.”
