SHEFFIELD CITY HALL The legacy left by Jeff Lynne & The Electric Light Orchestra barely needs any introduction – suffice to say that between 1972 and 1986 they achieved more combined UK and US Top 40 hits than any other band on the planet! ‘10538 Overture’, ‘Evil Woman’, ‘Living Thing’, ‘Diary of Horace Wimp’, Don’t Bring me Down’ and of course ‘Mr Blue Sky’ went on to become the soundtrack of our lives. Blending rock rhythms with classical influences, ELO also released many classic albums such as ‘A New World Record’, ‘Discovery’ and ‘Out of the Blue’, and many sell out tours further established them as one of the most important and influential bands ever. Formed over 7 years ago, The ELO Experience are the world’s foremost tribute to this great band. With a stunning light show and large screen projection to further enhance the experience,
why not come along and enjoy this incredible show which accurately reproduces the songs and sounds and takes you on a musical journey through time. ‘This band shows great style and professionalism. A tribute that’s jam-packed with musical talent, the lead singer is a dead-ringer for Lynne and his musical entourage provides an ELO tour de force’ Derek Smith, The Stage To find out more, read reviews and comments etc please visit www.elotribute.com Tickets for The ELO Experience priced £20 (subject to booking fees) at City Hall Sheffield are available online through at www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk through the ticket hotline on 0114 2 789 789 and in person at the Sheffield City Hall Box Office.

After trick-or-treating, a teen takes a shortcut home through the cemetery. Halfway across, he’s startled by a tapping noise coming from the misty shadows. Trembling with fear, he spots an old man with a hammer and chisel, chipping away at a headstone. “I thought you were a ghost,” says the relieved teen. “What are you doing working so late?” “Oh, those idiots,” grumbles the old man. “They misspelled my name!” A penguin walks into a bar, goes to the counter, and asks the bartender, “Have you seen my brother?” The bartender says, “I don’t know. What does he look like?” A horse walks into a bar. The bartender says, “Hey.” The horse says, “You read my mind, buddy.” How many songs has Bob Dylan written ? The answer my friend is blowing in the wind. Following Christopher Lee’s death, The Sun have written a full article about Dracula. He didn’t appear in The Mirror though. A zookeeper is ordering new animals. As he fills out the forms, he types “two mongeese.” That doesn’t look right, so he tries “two mongoose,” then “two mongooses.” Giving up, he types, “One mongoose, and while you’re at it, send another one.” For Father’s Day I gave my father £100 and said, “Buy yourself something that will make your life easier.” So he went out and bought a present for my mother.

PERSONAL INDEPENDENCE PAYMENTS - RESEARCH REPORT Sheffield Citizens Advice has now released its research report on the impact of the implementation of Personal Independence Payments. Based on issues raised by 1,260 between October 2013 and September 2014. Typically, these problems involved delays, often of many months, in assessing and processing their claims, as well the lack of appropriate venues for medical assessments and poor communications from both Department for Work and Pensions and ATOS Healthcare, which was undertaking PIP medical assessments in Sheffield. The report analyses our clients’ stories, which show that newly disabled and ill people, in need of vital income to meet the additional costs arising from their health problems and often at a time of crisis, having to adjust to the uncertainty of what the future may bring, have been badly let down by the rushed implementation of PIP. Whilst the time taken to process PIP claims has fallen recently, we are concerned that the extension of PIP to include existing Disability Living Allowance claimants in Sheffield may result in delays for these people We conclude that the implementation of PIP was rushed and that this was to the great detriment of many sick and disabled people and their families already struggling to cope with the increased costs of disablement or ill-health bring. We recommend that: • PIP claims should be assessed within a reasonable time scale and this should be no longer than 13 weeks. • Proper redress should be offered to people whose claims have been unreasonably delayed • Future welfare reform should learn from the difficulties experienced by people claiming PIP, and should ensure that people claiming benefits do not suffer detriment due to poorly implemented systems and processes See full report: http://www. advicesheffield.org.uk/images/directory/ Documents/Policy_and_Campaigns/PIP_ Sheffield_Citizens_Advice_May_2015. pdf

CANCER PATIENT ON ROAD TO RECOVERY SETS SIGHTS ON FINISH LINE AT RUN IN THE PARK A dad of two from Sheffield is taking on a charity run this July in a bid to return to full fitness after being diagnosed with cancer just last year. Darren Clewes (40) from Wincobank has signed up for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s popular Run in the Park event to say thank you for his exceptional care by staff at Weston Park Hospital. Just under a year ago in June 2014, after finding a lump and visiting his GP, running enthusiast Darren was given the shock diagnosis of neck cancer; affecting the tonsils, glands

and lymph nodes. Darren, who credits the wonderful staff at Weston Park Hospital for supporting him through his cancer journey, has now vowed to raise as much money as possible for the hospital’s dedicated charity by taking on their 10k run on the 12th July. Now into its seventh year, Run in the Park welcomes participants of all ages and abilities to take on either a 3k fun run or 10k race through Graves Park as part of this popular event. Sponsored by Autoworld and Irwin Mitchell, the event, which last year saw over 900 people attend, has raised over an incredible £250,000 since it first began 7 years ago and each year attracts more runners wanting to support the work of Weston Park Hospital. Darren said, “My treatment at
Weston Park Hospital was tough, but the kindness and professionalism of all the staff there totally got me through and I’m pleased to say that I’m on the recovery trail.” “I was totally wowed by the support of the doctors, nurses and volunteers there and I feel it’s time to give something back. Every face, without exception, was supportive, friendly and kind. The staff go through this on a daily basis with many patients but remain tireless in their energies and individual in their approach to each person.” The cancer charity needs to raise over £1.8 million this year to fund a wide range of projects that will keep Weston Park Hospital at the forefront of cancer treatment. To register for Run in the Park visit www.runinthepark.org.uk or ring the Cancer Charity office on 0114 2265370.

ENJOY MORE THAN MUSIC AT TRAMLINES THIS YEAR
There’s only five weeks until the three day spectacular that is Tramlines descends on the city with headline acts including Basement Jaxx, The Charlatans and Wu Tang Clan as well as a huge line-up of local and international music acts appearing across Sheffield. Tramlines is also an exploring festival and, as ever, there’s a ton of culture and entertainment to be had outside of the venues and stages. Here’s where you can find just some of it. Treat yourself to some exclusive
AWARD WINNING RESTAURANT LAUNCHES SUMPTUOUS NEW MENU Last Saturday we were invited to try the new menu at the Award Winning 18fifty5 restaurant at the Copthorne Hotel in Sheffield, situated next to Bramall Lane Stadium. The menu changes seasonally, with the new summer selection being launched from this week, offering guests plenty of variety. The 18fifty5 prides itself on crafting original dishes cooked
art After huge success in 2014, the Tramlines Gig Poster Show returns to The Millennium Gallery for the festival weekend. Presented by dirtyface.co.uk, Drew Millward & Tom J Newell will again curate and exhibit a selection of exclusive original festival posters alongside an impressive lineup of artists who’ve each been invited to produce a poster for an act from this year’s lineup. printedbymono. co.uk will provide Limited Edition Risograph Prints of each of the designs, which will be available to buy from the gallery
for the duration of the show.
from fresh ingredients, sourced locally and grown organically wherever possible. The food that we had on the night was of exceptional quality and highlighted the wide range of styles available on the new menu, ranging from the modern to the traditional served with an up-todate twist. For starters we choose the smoked duck which set up the meal perfectly. Tender duck slices were complemented by a light dressing and Moroccan style accompaniment, providing a light but interesting start to the meal. However, the highlight on the menu was the more traditional Copthorne meatball which was cooked to tender perfection and served alongside mash potato and seasonal vegetables.
Our dessert strayed away from the traditional and showed off the modern edge of the 18fifty5 menu with a dish designed essentially to be a deconstructed Snickers bar. This style of presentation has been extremely fashionable on shows such as Masterchef over recent years and this was a fine example of how a familiar and well loved taste can be re-imagined and presented in a way fit for a prestigious restaurant. The wine list and dessert menus offer something for everyone and will satisfy all budgets. A children’s menu is also available on request. We highly recommend this restaurant as one of the city’s finest examples of a wide and interesting menu whilst still offering value for money in high
Look out for the Dance Network Sheffield’s Cityscapes project Watch the city come alive through dance in a sea of movement and colour which will transform pathways, benches, galleries and fountains into a new world of exciting images. This unique pop-up dance performance will take place in different parts of the city in which you will see unusual spaces and places illuminated by dance. Performers include professional dancers and a company of local community performers.
The Dance Network Sheffield is committed to providing opportunities for local professional dancers to unite in creative collaborations across the city. For more information contact: Tara Baker thedancenetworksheffield@gmail. com Follow the Street Theatre trail The University of Sheffield’s Professor Vanessa Toulmin returns to Tramlines, offering a wide selection of idiosyncratic street theatre at pop-up locations throughout the city centre, and all weekend on Barkers Pool, outside City Hall. Get back up to speed with a free yoga class Imagine yourself flowing through yoga poses whilst listening to the likes of the Wu Tang and Slow Club. Instinctive Health is hosting a full weekend of free quality surroundings . We look forward to trying the new menu in the Autumn. The restaurant is open for dinner

The exhibition examines how the architectural, geographical and emotional contours of the city can subconsciously guide individuals to authentic experiences and a renewed awareness of their urban landscape. The artists featured investigate the lesser explored areas of our city, psychological urban space and encourage viewers to become a tourist in their own city.

SLIPKNOT REIGN DESPITE THE RAIN AT DOWNLOAD Review: Slipknot, 12/06/15, Download Festival By Kt Evans
And the heavens opened. Ok so we’re used to a spot or two of rain (British summer time just wouldn’t be complete without the occasional downpour) however in the case of Download Festival 2015, the only comparison which can be drawn is to that of a freaking monsoon. Unlucky for us, literally everywhere sold out of those utterly attractive plastic ponchos, although this certainly did not dampen our spirits for Friday’s headliners Slipknot. Little introduction is needed for arguably the most infamous heavy metal group of all time. Having sold over 20 million records worldwide, the Iowa legends sum up precisely what Download is all about… complete and utter awesomeness. We could sit here writing twenty pages about how incredible the pyrotechnics were or just how gruesome the bands handmade masks are, but for the purposes of space (and also your entertainment) we’ll stick to the main event. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to witness the enigma that is Slipknot, you’ll understand just how phenomenal they are on stage. Opening up their ninety minute set with “Sacrastrophe” from the bands most recent studio album, “The Gray
Chapter,” 90,000 audience members where thrust into the turbulent lives of the most controversial metal pack since days began. “Psychosocial” and “Vermilion” off their “Subliminal Verses” album followed, demonstrating a depth in set with a selection of tracks from all five of the group’s studio albums. What is imperative to remember at this point is just how torrential the weather is. We’re talking mud up to shin kind of terrain which had the potential to seriously ruin Slipknots set. Put it this way; weather intercepts sound. If you’re anything other than ten rows from the front of the stage, chances are the sound is going to be seriously screwed by the wind. However (and this is a pretty big however) Slipknot overcame this. Whether it be black magic, witch craft or funky festival voodoo, Corey Taylor’s vocals were delivered absolutely spot on throughout. We can cast our mind back to 2011 when Metallica played at Sonisphere, weather was tropical monsoon style, mud like quick sand and we simply could not hear anything. Slipknot – no problem. A sign of one of the best vocalists the metal music industry has ever witnessed? Hell yeah. Other hits “Duality,” “Wait and Bleed” and “Custer” followed, preceded by a triumphant three song encore. Rounding off their mighty performance with “Surfacing,” a classic hit in dedication of where it all began, their dark, twisted set proves exactly why Slipknot are the ultimate kings of metal. Amen.

LET’S ROCK IN LEEDS
Preview: Let’s Rock Leeds, 20/06/15, Temple Newsam By Kt Evans
O’h how we wish we grew up in the 80’s. A time when it was socially acceptable for men to strut around in glittery platforms whilst donning matching eyeshadow, Let’s Rock Leeds is set to honour these times with a line-up full to the brim with nostalgia, hairspray and funky dance moves. Held on Saturday 20th June at Temple Newsam, the line-up includes Heaven 17, Rick Astley and Midge Ure plus many more. Let’s Rock Leeds returns to Leeds after seven years of supplying the UK with the ultimate 80s showcasing. The festival is the largest one-day 80s music event in the North of England, however isn’t simply just about the music. Alongside a host of 80s bands and acts to truly take you right back to this decade, the event also includes entertainment for the whole family to include circus workshops, face painting, crafts, water rides and children’s
entertainers from BBC and ITV. The perfect way to treat the man of the house on Father’s Day weekend, we also have a sneaking suspicion he’d seriously enjoy the bands announced. Let’s Rock Leeds is playing host to a selection of 80s throwbacks to include: Thompson Twins, Rick Astely, Go West, Midge Ure, Heaven 17, Five Star, T’Pau, Betty Boo, Bucks Fizz, The Beat, Odyssey, Sonia, Sam Fox and Jive Bunny and The Mastermixers. The event is to be hosted by no other than Pat Sharp who is set to entertain you for the entire day event. Stating on their website Let’s Rock Leeds writes: “There will be plenty of action going on during those dull band changeovers, including Jive Bunny and The Mastermixers, Pat Sharp and Dave Benson Phillips, alongside our Let’s Rock Megamix Karaoke to keep the party going for the whole day.” Tickets are priced at £43 for an adult ticket and £21 for under 12s. VIP tickets can also be purchased from £131 per person along with family tickets (2 adults and 2 children) for £106. Check the website for further details – www.letsrockleeds.com.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker
The wife has a chest infection; this means that every night for the past week, I’ve been woken several times a night as she coughs and splutters resulting in me looking forward to a few hours of peace today and maybe even a an hours sleep on the bank at a new venue…. That was the plan anyway…. The lake in question is forty six acres in area, (remember that) has depths to fifty feet, is crystal clear and requires some preparation to even get a sniff of a carp which run to almost 40lb. A couple of kilos of Vitalin, a cereal based dog food, was soaked overnight in a sealed bucket after adding boiling water, Mainline Baits Bloodworm pellets, a good slug of Bloodworm syrup, some corn, and a tin of hemp, and this would form a carpet of feed to be deposited across a gravel bar I’d found with my Deeper Fishfinder gadget earlier in the week. I’d tied new, rigs, loaded the van and was ready to go, and looking forward to a new challenge. After being woken by the wife at 1am, and again at 3am, I decided to get up at 4.30am and travel to the venue. On arrival, I walked along the pathway towards my intended swim, saw a lovely 26lb 4oz common in someone else’s sling, and settled in. The sun was on the way up, the air was still, the reflections stunning, and the birds were singing… perfect, surely I was on for a good day? I found my marks, baited up, and deposited all three rigs bang on the money from the bottom to the top of the gravel bar. I’d already seen fish, and they were big ones, so I relaxed into my snug little swim and watched the world go by for a while. The first few hours were uneventful, but as the sun climbed higher, there were definitely fish in the swim as an oily slick flattened the surface and fish rolled over the baits. Approaching lunchtime, a series of line bites saw me switch on in anticipation, fully expecting a run in the next few minutes…. Then I heard a dull thump….then another….then splashing….then voices; loud ones. A pair of brightly coloured Indian

style canoes drifted into view. Crewed by individuals who had no control whatsoever, they spun closer and closer, eventually dropping a heavy anchor smack bang in the middle of my small area until control could be regained by standing up and waving energetically to the instructor some distance away…. (This is only forty six acres of water remember) I considered a two ounce warning shot, but realised a small boy appeared to be somewhat terrified in the bow, so contented myself with loud sarcasm until the instructor rescued his charges with a cheery wave… which I returned…. but not with all my fingers….swim ruined. By this time, all fish had disappeared, and I knew it would be sometime before they returned, so topped up with a few Spombs of bait in the hope that they would return during the afternoon. Next door to my swim was a small beach, which was obviously there to be used by every Labrador owner in Cheshire to exercise their hound despite a strict ‘no swimming’ rule. As I was hidden away, it was also accepted that every stick thrown would land in front of me, and after half a dozen arguments with belligerent owners (the lake is owned by the club, as are the boundaries, which are dutifully ignored by the locals) I was getting steadily more annoyed…. So much for a relaxing day. Mid-afternoon and after the dog owners had

to me. As all four ran down the beach into the water, swimming considerately through my swim whilst chucking bricks at each other and my clobber (did I mention it’s a forty six acre lake?) I decided that discretion was the better part of valour and retired hurt. I packed up quietly and returned to the van and threw the kit in the back. I was aware of several comments aimed my way as I trudged along, but I’m a nice guy, so I didn’t reply. I’m sure they will be grateful (and as surprised as I was!) when they finally return to the car and find it with four flat tyres as it will save the indignity of a drink drive charge….probably. Apart from all that, it was a great day….tight lines.

dispersed, the local boy racers decided to use the access track to speed test a shoddy Subaru Imprezza with as much noise as they could muster… several times. Tiring of the thrills, they parked in the car park, wound the windows down and listened to the radio; and so did everyone else within a hundred yards. This continued for a while, then all was quiet… I heard them approaching up the track; four shaven headed, Union flag short wearing, tattooed, flip flop clad and carrying a considerable amount of beer…oh joy! Obviously Job Seekers Allowance didn’t allow them to get to Magaluf, so why not bring Magaluf here? Guess where they decided to party? Yup, right next

BOSS PLANS SQUAD ASSESSMENT Nigel Adkins says assessing the players he already has contracted at his disposal will be a crucial part of the early pre-season work, when the players return to training at the end of June. The new Blades boss, who is aware that his team will need to be more productive as an attacking force next season, as well as being more frugal at the other end of the pitch, believes the squad he inherits from previous manager Nigel Clough has plenty of quality within it, but says modifying during the current transfer window is likely. He remarked: “We aren’t looking to move anyone on, we want to have honest conversations with all the lads and progress from there. “The retained list was announced prior to our arrival, so we will take stock of everything and move forward in a positive manner, conducting several chats privately behind the scenes. “The facts from last season prove that we didn’t score enough and we conceded too many, improving those two factors will be our first aim to give us the best chance of winning promotion.” Adkins added: “We want to enhance the group with the right players at the right time, we want to unite the Club and have everyone on and off the field pulling in the same direction. “If we can make the right decisions in that regard, then we give ourselves an opportunity to be successful, but we would never rule out using the loan market at some point throughout the season. “Teams have done well by using that to their advantage in the past and we will always be looking to improve, although we won’t be reliant on it.”

PALMER ON TRACK AFTER INJURY
DAM
Liam Palmer’s season was frustratingly cut short back in March after the defender suffered an ankle injury during the home clash with Fulham. But three months on and the 23-year-old’s rehabilitation is going strong and Palmer is looking forward to 1 July, when the players return for pre-season. But until that time, the hard work will continue for the Owls academy product, who aims to report back at full fitness. He said: “I should be fine for July 1. It’s holding up really well so there shouldn’t be any more issues with it. “I’ve been working hard at Middlewood Road and it’s paid off. “All the lads get a fitness programme for the summer – mine has just been a bit more intensive.”
