SPANDAU BALLET SET TO BRING MUSICAL GOLD TO DONCASTER RACECOURSE

Doncaster Racecourse will play host to iconic super-group Spandau Ballet as part of it’s Music Live series, after an evening of racing, on Saturday 15 August. The New Romantic favourites will be performing live following a packed seven race card at the Town Moor venue, South Yorkshire’s premier racecourse. The London formed ﬁve-piece comprising Tony Hadley, Gary Kemp, Martin Kemp, Steve Norman and John Keeble have sold over 25 million records and amassed 23 hit singles across the globe since they formed in the late 1970s. Known as one of Britain’s great iconic bands, they took the world by storm on their comeback tour in 2009 after two decades apart. Commenting on the news that Spandau Ballet are set to perform at Doncaster Racecourse as part of the Music Live series of events, Kieron Gallagher, executive director at the venue, said: “Spandau Ballet will be one of the highlights of a great

summer of racing and music here at Doncaster Racecourse. The action packed evening of racing followed by ﬁrst class musical entertainment will make for a great late summer’s event to be enjoyed with friends, family and colleagues alike.” The band will take to the stage to perform classic hits from their back catalogue, including UK number one single True and the iconic song Gold, amongst others from their eight UK top ten albums, which include numerous multi-platinum sellers. Mr Gallagher continued: “To have such a huge name from the British music industry playing at Town Moor is a real honour and is very exciting. We are more than just a sporting venue and are delighted to add Spandau Ballet to our list of big name music acts to have graced the stage here.” As part of the Music Live series Doncaster Racecourse will play host to Madness this Saturday, with the Human League and UB40 already having performed this year. Plus it has announced its ﬁrst DJ Live event featuring Jo Whiley and Vernon Kay on Saturday 01 August. Shefﬁeld Teaching Hospitals are recruiting now.

We are looking to increase the numbers of volunteers we have helping in hospitals, thanks to a grant from Nesta and the Department of Health. Do you think you have what it takes? Shefﬁeld Teaching Hospitals already have over 750 volunteers in many varied roles across the hospitals and in the community. We welcome applicants aged 16 upwards who wish to donate some of their valuable time to help improve patient and visitor experiences at the hospitals. In particular we are recruiting to roles which have a direct impact on the patient in hospital. We would love to hear from you about these roles, see below. Some of the roles we are expanding or new roles we are recruiting to: • Nutrition assistant volunteerswho help patients on the wards with mealtimes, helping them to open food packets, fetch drinks, encourage eating and record how much is eaten. Training is also for volunteers to be available to help those patients who need extra assistance at mealtimes. • Activities assistant volunteersrunning reminiscence sessions with dementia patients, chatting to or playing games with patients on wards, helping with music or art groups on wards and helping patients that have few or no visitors to be engaged during their hospital stay. • Hospital-home volunteerbefriending people who may need extra support at discharge and when home. Joining up with community services to support the individual when they are home. Making the discharge process a smooth and stress free event.

We have a wide age-range of volunteers, including young people wishing to pursue a career in healthcare and older people who might now have the time to give something back to the hospital. We value all our volunteers and in particular would like to increase numbers from 50+membership. CARERS STAKEHOLDER REFERENCE GROUP Sheffield City Council recognises the huge contribution that carers make as expert partners in caring and supporting some of the most vulnerable people in the city. The Council is revising the Sheffield Carers Strategy and is forming a Carers Stakeholder Reference Group which will lead the consultation on the new Strategy. The Council considers it important that carers and other stakeholders take a lead on this consultation. Membership of the Reference Group is open to anyone who has an interest in carers, including carers themselves. It will meet monthly at Moorfoot.The Council’s approach will be to work with as many carers, organisations and staff as possible. Once the Strategy is written, it will lead to options for the design and commissioning of future services for adult services. A HOLIDAY IS FOR LIFE, NOT JUST FOR SUMMER New research published this week sets out the life-long benefit of a break away as a family, especially for the increasing number of struggling families in the UK. Half of Brits (49%) say their happiest memory is that of a holiday with their family and an overwhelming majority (55%) agree that these holidays have given them happy memories that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. The report, published by the Family Holiday Association, the charity that helps struggling families to have a break, shows that a quarter of Brits (24%) say they particularly call on these happy memories of family holidays when times get tough. For the families who the charity supports - many of whom are dealing with issues ranging from severe and sudden illness to bereavement and abuse - this figure more than quadruples. 100% of Family Holiday Association families said the memories they made together on their break at the seaside have helped them cope with the difficult times. Far more than a tan and time off work, the research report also shows the wide range of lasting social, emotional and psychological benefits that taking a break as a family can bring. These benefits are particularly profound for the Family Holiday Association families, many of whom are struggling with some of the toughest challenges life can bring. Significant changes such as increased affection to other family members, better behaviour at school and at home, greater optimism and ambition for their future, reduction in how much they worry and less need for disciplining children were all tangible benefits clearly set out in the results of the report. Professor of Marketing and Tourism, Scott McCabe, says there is an important relationship between holidays and positive long term memories. “Holidays are a key source of pleasure and other positive emotions involving intense, immersive experiences. Quality time is an important facet of holidays and because the experiences we gain are different

everyday life events they tend to stand out stronger in our memories. Holidays and travel experiences can contribute to our identities and enable us to construct an enduring sense of self around these stand-out experiences. “As key milestones in people’s lives – like a first kiss, first love, and getting married – the many positive experiences associated with family holidays help us to construct a sense of a happy family life that we look back on nostalgically through life”. Emotional responses to family holidays are central to the memories we all associate with them. Almost a third of Brits (31%) say their memories of childhood holidays when they were younger are still very vivid for them and 47% said that part of the excitement was the anticipation and looking forward to the holiday. Smiling, laughing, experiencing things for the first time and being most relaxed were identified as being true of many personal family holiday memories. Over two fifths of people (42%) say the places they visited continue to be very special to them. John McDonald, Director of the Family Holiday Association, said: “For many of the families we support, the short seaside breaks we provide are the first time they’ve ever been able to go away together - even the most simple of day trips can be a real lifeline. This research is the cast iron evidence we have long known to be true and demonstrates the incredible, positive impacts on the family and wider society that a break away from the daily grind can bring. “We consider these positive outcomes to be a ‘happiness anchor’ – reflecting on our happiest memories of joyful time spent together as a family can be extremely powerful in bringing relief and respite when faced with the darker times that life can bring. By using these memories as an anchor to take us back to more cheerful moments, we’re often able to approach problems with a fresh sense of perspective. But for many without such memories, reigniting a sense of optimism for getting through the tougher times can seem like an impossible task.”

Following the November 2014 launch of The Arena’s fixed 4,000 seated & 4,500 standing capacity Steel Hall within the Motorpoint Arena the venue has already hosted two sell-out Steel Hall shows. First was Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The World’s and last month Mark Knopfler returned for the first time since performing at the venue back in 1991. The show was promoted by Danny Betesh of Kennedy Street Enterprises who said:“The Steel Hall has fulfilled a long standing gap in the South Yorkshire market place and gave me the confidence to bring Mark back to the region for the first time in over 23 years. Both the fixed capacity & hire costs reduced the risk and achieving a sold-out show with over 4000 tickets adds up to an attractive proposition. I’m hoping to be back again soon”. Mark Knopfler’s Manager, Paul Crockford said:“The Steel Hall format worked really well for our Mark Knopfler date in Sheffield. We had all the benefits of a big arena’s facilities but in a format that made the show feel quite intimate. Fresh off the road from their sell out 2014 arena tour, Madness are now set to perform at Doncaster Racecourse this Saturday, June 27 as part of the UK’s greatest ever live open air tour this summer. The band said, “Come see, come see! The world’s strongest band perform incredible feats live! Marvel as Madness lift an enormous set of polished pop songs high in the air, single handed! The UK’s biggest open air tour ever! Rolling into a town near you, soon.” The tour, which runs from May to September 2015, will take in 19 shows at some of the greatest sporting venues around the country, including racecourses, cricket grounds, rugby and football stadiums. So, how was your opening day? I still look forward to June 16th, although I concede it may have lost some magic for many, however I found myself on the banks of the River Derwent bright and early hoping for some fun! Conditions were far from ideal; bright sun, low water and an abundance of weed ensured that the swim had to be scouted from atop the bridge to identify clear channels into which to put a bait, and after mentally logging a couple of likely spots, I tackled up well back from the water’s edge. My trusty (and favourite!) Sonik SK3 rods served a dual purpose; versatile enough to be rigged with a simple maggot feeder on a reasonably long paternoster, the other rod was teamed with a heavier lead, size 8 Vardis hook on a length of ﬂuorocarbon, and baited with a big lump of meat.

My ﬁrst cast saw the meat butt up nicely against a ﬂowing weed bed, and the feeder sit nicely in a clear channel under the bridge just upstream of my comfy seat. I didn’t have long to wait, and the minnows started to destroy the maggots resulting in a constantly infuriating twitch of the quivertip. After a couple of minutes, I considered the gentiles would have been sucked into a translucent shell, and decided to recast. As I reeled, in, I was somewhat surprised to see the size of bow wave caused by the now empty feeder; as the reality struck, so did the rather impressive pike which saw the feeder as fodder and proceeded to rip it to pieces in a frenzied attack from below! Obviously, a few seconds saw the pike destroy the feeder and disappear back into the depths, so I tackled up once more and recast…to a different spot! As I pulled on my polarising glasses, I was astonished to see the protagonist hovering majestically in the margins by my feet, no doubt waiting for me to drag an unsuspecting roach in for it to devour. It was a superb specimen, clearly approaching upper double

figures, and I enjoyed watching it immensely as it eyed me suspiciously. Sadly, the fishing wasn’t as good as the scenery, so a move was on the cards… I slimmed down the tackle to a single rod and set forth across the meadow to wander up a tributary to see if I could spot some unwary targets. The river burbled pleasingly as I sat cushioned by honeysuckle, buttercup, wild garlic and forget-me-not, and cobalt blue and iridescent green dragonflies flitted about their business. As I crept quietly along, I witnessed a pair of kingfishers whiz up and downstream, a heron wading the shallows, and a menagerie of other birds chirped away merrily in the branches above. The solitude, smells and sounds meant the fishing came a very poor second as I enjoyed the warm sunshine…it really was blissful, and I was delighted to be there… Sadly, after the initial investigations of the pike, I had no more interest from anything remotely piscine, so went home reflecting on an unproductive day. But was it really that unproductive? In truth, I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a session as much as that for a very long time; treading warily through chest high nettles, squeezing through gaps in the barbed wire fences before leaning back to pick up my kit, and then finding a likely spot before sitting on the cool grassy banks as the sunlight dappled the water and hurt my eyes was a fantastic way to really reawaken the passion for river angling; I’ve missed it over the last three months, and can’t wait to get stuck back in again!

FOOTBALL NEWS EXCITEMENT GROWS - ADKINS Blades boss Nigel Adkins is tipping an exciting season for the Bramall Lane faithful to enjoy in 2015/16. Speaking after the Capital One Cup draw and announcement of United’s Sky Bet League One schedule last week, Adkins has revealed planning and preparations have increased. United’s campaign will begin with an away double header against Gillingham in the league, followed by a cup clash at Morecambe during the following midweek, but the manager hasn’t let that dent his enthusiasm. “We’ve already started planning the campaign, as a group of staff,” Adkins remarked. “I started in football at the age of 16, so I’ve had a lot of pre-seasons and ﬁxture announcements, but that excitement doesn’t fade. “It’s exciting for the fans, of course, as they know where they’ll start the season and they can plan their away trips and the like. But it’s exciting for us, too. We’ve already started looking at travelling, hotels and training schedules for away trips.” The Gaffer added: “When you factor in the FA Cup, Capital One Cup and Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, there’s a lot of football to be played and we’re excited to get started.” The players are scheduled to return to preseason training next week.

OWLS IN THE PARK IS BACK & BIGGER THAN EVER Sheffield Wednesday’s annual family fun day Owls in the Park promises to be bigger and better for 2015 with more activities and entertainment than ever before. As well as the opportunity to meet the players and enjoy live music from one of the most popular Blues Brothers tribute bands in the country, fans can participate in a whole range of fun-filled activities, including a giant inflatable football pitch, bubble football and the biggest dog show in Yorkshire. Other attractions include a medieval reenactment, an ‘It’s a Knockout’ tournament, craft stalls, animal displays and dance performances. Fans can also have their photos taken with the FA Cup – the most iconic domestic football trophy in the world. A fully licensed bar will be available on the day as well as a range of food and drink stalls. Matt Bray, Social Inclusion Manager for the Owls’ Community Programme, said: “Owls in the Park is a great event for everyone and this year promises to be the best so far. We’ve planned even more activities and events than previous years and we’re really excited to see thousands of our supporters in the park on the day. “It’s a great chance for fans to come together, to meet the players and to experience a range of different activities.” A raft of charities, including Support Dogs, Bluebell Wood, St. Luke’s Hospice and The Royal Society For The Blind, will be attending the event and holding stalls and activities to raise both money and awareness. The free of charge event, organised in conjunction with the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme and Sheffield City Council, attract thousands of people throughout the day, with something for all the family. Owls in the Park 2015 takes place in Hillsborough Park on Sunday 19 July, from 11.00am to 5:30pm. See you there!
