ALBERT SNODGRASS
I went to my hairdresser and said, “Can you cut my hair like David Bowie?” He made a right mess of it. I said, “This is terrible!” He said, “Yeah, but David Bowie can’t cut hair...” I was watching an interview with Frank Sinatra where he was asked if he had any children. “Rugrats? I’ve had a few,” he said. I’ve just taken up speed reading. Last night I did war and peace in 20 seconds. I know it’s only 3 words but it’s a start! 11.34: Arrived at crime scene 11.34: Examined body. Signs of a struggle 11.34: Found murder weapon in drain 11.34: Realised watch was broken I’ve just realised my wheelie bin has a better social life than me, it at least gets to go out once a week and stay out all night. “Pick a card, any card you like,” I said to my wife. “Make sure you memorise it, now put it back with the rest of the pack.” “Sod off Dave! It’s our anniversary,” she replied, before stomping out of Hallmark. I find it offensive when cashiers look at money like it’s fake. If I knew how to counterfeit money I’d be doing wilder things than coming to Starbucks. The phone rang. “Mr Snodgrass?” “Yeah?” I replied. “Mr. Snodgrass, we need you to come and pick your son up from school.” “Oh, bloody hell, what’s he gone and done now?” “Nothing, Mr. Snodgrass. It’s just that it’s nearly midnight.”

I bumped into an old friend yesterday. I told him I was arranging a night out with the boys on Facebook. He said, “I’m not on Facebook, so keep me updated by text.” So later on, I sent him a text that said, “My brother-in-law is at a gig, my cousin loves cheese on toast, and a girl I went to school with has bought a cat.”

HELP US TO SHAPE SEVENDAY GP ACCESS IN SHEFFIELD Hello, following the last Right First Time Citizens Reference Group meeting we formally announced the three sites for the primary care outof-hours satellite sites will be located at Crookes Medical Practice, the Sloane practice and at Woodhouse. We hope the satellite sites, funded by the Prime Minister’s Challenge Fund, will begin to open their doors in September. The satellite units will be established in the central west, central south and south east areas of the city in addition to the GP collaborative at the Northern General Hospital. Once the satellite sites are open, patients will be asked what they think about the new service. We would like to meet with you to consider what questions could be asked of patients, plus their family and carers, and how this feedback could be used to shape the service in future. We would like to invite you to a meeting on Tuesday 21 July 2015 at Sheffield City Council’s Moorfoot building, between 10.30am and 12pm. The meeting will be held in one of the boardrooms on floor two. Please contact Suzanne Rutter, Communications and Engagement Officer at Sheffield City Council, for more information about this meeting or to confirm your attendance on 0114 2039325 or Suzanne.Rutter@sheffield. gov.uk. LEARN A LIVING WITH LIFESKILLS In the past year LifeSkills have received numerous accolades for our work in the education sector and also in terms of developing our staff. With an overall ‘Good’ grade from Ofsted, achievement of the Investors in People ‘Gold’ accreditation, the highest award possible and being recognised for the fifth time as a Sunday Times Top 100 company to work for, it was quite a year. Our focus as always is to continually drive forward the quality of our Study Programmes and Apprenticeships and reach out to more young people who will benefit from an Apprenticeship. A total of 95% of our apprentice completers stay on with employers after their Apprenticeship has finished. The government is very keen on further developing the Traineeship Programmes, whereby employers can give valuable work experience to young people to see if they will fit their company’s culture before offering them an Apprenticeship. The Traineeship Programme has been a huge success at LifeSkills in the past year with 124 young people completing Traineeships before entering full time employment. We have numerous programmes available for young people and are always happy to speak with employers to see how we can meet their needs. Please contact Fiona.Crane@learnaliving.co.uk or visit www.learnaliving.co.uk .

EXCITING CHANGES AT THIS YEAR’S BAKEWELL SHOW!
Exciting changes are taking place at Bakewell Show - this year on August 5th and 6th with a dedicated equestrian day on August 4th - as organisers work hard to keep it fresh and relevant in its 185th year. A new website has been launched to make it quicker and easier for people to enter different classes, buy tickets and find out about attractions. It can be found at www.bakewellshow.org And the Wye Valley showground has been revamped to make it easier for visitors to get around. Following the merger of Members and Patrons of the show last year, entertainment facilities have been switched to the other side of the centre ring where the new marquee will serve not only traditional hot meals and afternoon teas, but also lighter bites for those not wanting full catering. The freed-up space will make room for more trade stands, food courts and seating for the general public. The public grandstand will also swap sides The village green will be bigger and for the first time the show will have its own Farmers’ Market selling a selection of artisan bread, eggs, fruit, vegetables etc from local producers some of whom currently trade at the Farmers’ Markets held regularly in the town. The Centre Ring attraction is the exciting Knights of the Damned team this year celebrating its 10th anniversary. With spectacular displays of bravery as well as jousting, the display has proved a great success at past shows. And it’s something of a homecoming for the man behind the Knights, Justin Pearson, who used to take part in the Mounted Games at Bakewell Show. Of course there are also the regular attractions – including champion animals, mammoth vegetables, vintage vehicles, specialist food and the ever popular beach experience.
We have a pair of tickets to give away – all you have to do to stand a chance of winning is to tell us the name of the Centre Ring attraction, and send the answer together with your name and a daytime telephone number to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk before Friday 17th July Pre-show tickets are £15.50 for adults and £13.50 for seniors with one the gate prices £16.50 for adults and £14.50 for seniors. Children under 16 are admitted free when accompanied by an adults. There is a nominal charge of £5 for visitors to the equestrian day on August 4th.

The event explores the period just before the First World War 1914-18, the outbreak of the war and war itself. A temporary exhibition in the onsite Derby Assembly Rooms called Tramway Tommies and Clippie Girls looks at how the recruitment of men for the army left many tramways short of staff for tramcars. Other activities planned include re-enactors, lectures and educational sessions. Trams from the period, including a replica recruitment tramcar, combining elements from a number of the original recruitment tramcars, will be running. The very popular horse tram will be giving rides on 15th July and don't miss the London Battle Bus on display from 16th - 19th July! SPORTING HISTORY UNVEILED BY SHEFFIELD LORD MAYOR Football fans have just four weeks to catch a glimpse of a piece of Sheffield's football heritage next month. The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Talib Hussain, will formally unveil the Youdan Trophy before it goes on public view in Sheffield Town Hall from July 3rd to July 30th. The stunning bronze statue is the work of Barnsley's revered 'people's sculptor' Graham Ibbeson - the man famed for his life size Dickie Bird statue in his hometown and his celebrated Eric Morecambe statue in Morecambe. The Youdan Trophy will sit in the alarmed display

Graham Ibbeson was commissioned to design and make a trophy celebrating a Sheffield footballing first - the Football Challenge Cup presented by Thomas Youdan Esq. The little-known competition was the world's first ever football tournament that pre-dates the FA Cup by a full four years and was played only once at Bramall Lane in 1867. This summer sees it as the inspiration for the new Youdan Trophy with the final once again played at the competition's spiritual home, Bramall Lane. The winning team will be presented with Graham Ibbeson's stunning new masterpiece, the Youdan Trophy itself. of the tournament that is set to see invited youth teams at under 14 level from as far away as Australia competing. The original Football Challenge Cup presented by Thomas Youdan Esq. was the brainchild of Thomas Youdan - a self-made Victorian who was behind Sheffield's celebrated Alexandra Theatre. The Youdan Trophy Tournament is set to take place at Sheffield Hallam University's Sports Park from Monday, July 27 to Friday, July 31. The final will take place at Bramall Lane on July 31 at 3pm. Glasgow Celtic, Glasgow Rangers, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic, Brentford, AFA Nerang Eagles (Gold Coast) and FAB Academy are set to compete at the event. Free tickets for the final are available from www. youdantrophy.com The Youdan Trophy is being delivered in partnership with Marketing Sheffield, University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, Precision, Meadowhall and Blenheim Estates.

MUSIC FESTIVAL TO BE HELD IN What MEMORY OF SHEFFIELD TEEN story
Nothing like an outdoor summer festival with the best music Sheffield has to offer. Especially when it supports a great cause. The Justice for Matt Campaign is a charity that was set up by the family of Matt Cryer, a young man who was killed on his first holiday abroad. At the age of 17, Matt was a typical life-loving guy, but was treated brutally by the bouncers of a foreign night club, and ended up being killed as a result of their treatment. The Justice for Matt Campaign hopes to bring his killers to justice using money raised to fund the court case and investigation. Matt Fest is an international festival that comprises of stages in England, Spain and Bermuda, and Sheffield’s Noose and Gibbet pub is lucky enough to be able to take part. On July 11th, the Sheffield pub will be transformed into a fantastic festival of music, with an outdoor stage-playing host to many talented artists. The line-up includes seasoned local acts such as Medusa, newly reformed Maison Rouge, Ian Britt and Soloist Steve Gascoine, as
well as sporting newer, younger acts in the form of Four Authors, Max Restaino and more. On top of this, Legendary Blues connoisseur Ben Miles will be appearing and playing a set for us. The event is obviously non-profit, based on raising money for the charity, but a minimum donation
of £2 will be greatly appreciated. Opening at 1pm with the Four Authors, the DMF Digital hosted stage will be showcasing acts from 1 till 10. That’s 9 hours of solid music. So come down, take in some brilliant music, support a great cause and enjoy the summer!
Barnsley Based Four Authors will be appearing at Mattfest 2015
will you bring? It’s time to dust off your treasures for a great, free day out as BBC One’s ever popular Sunday evening programme Antiques Roadshow comes to Bolsover Castle, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire, on Thursday 9 July, 2015. The doors at Bolsover Castle, owned by English Heritage, open at 9.30am and close at 4.30pm and there is free parking. Entry to the show is free, everyone is welcome and no pre-registration is required. Some of Britain’s leading antiques and fine arts specialists will be on hand to offer free advice and valuations to visitors, who are invited to raid their attics and bring along their family heirlooms, household treasures and car boot bargains for inspection by the experts. People with large or heavy items should email : antiques. roadshow@bbc.co.uk or write to Antiques Roadshow, BBC, Whiteladies Road, Bristol BS8 2LR, as we may be able to help transport them to the venue. Antiques Roadshow presenter Fiona Bruce said: “This will be my 8th year on the Antiques Roadshow and I still feel so lucky to be presenting the programme. Every week is different; a new
location and thousands of new visitors. The only constant is the pleasure of the unexpected - we never know what will turn up, from the most fabulous Faberge to the most humble object with a riveting story.” During the last series the Antiques Roadshow unearthed some amazing finds – a portrait by a renowned artist painted on a pillowcase in a POW camp, Star Wars memorabilia valued at £40,000 and a Chinese enamel box bought for 20p and worth over £10,000. BBC Antiques Roadshow Executive Editor, Simon Shaw said: “It’s hard to think of a more spectacular setting than the location of Bolsover Castle high above the Vale of Scarsdale. Stunning views and a fascinating
history make it the ideal backdrop for filming Antiques Roadshow. All we need now is for as many people as possible to bring along their objects for a fantastic free day out. “We love meeting all visitors to our Antiques Roadshows, seeing their treasures, and hearing their stories. So many people tell us how much they enjoy their day out, they get the chance to meet Fiona and the experts, and see from behind the scenes how the Antiques Roadshow is made. “Even after 38 years, the magic formula of surprising some lucky guests with exciting news about their treasures is still a thrill for us, the visitors and the viewers.” More information on planning your visit can be found at: www. bbc.co.uk/antiquesroadshow
Driving St Wilfrid’s
John Tustin, Manager of the dealership said “The team from Mike Brewers had a great time at St Wilfrid’s Centre and although we succumbed to the better team, we couldn’t have had a more entertaining afternoon.” St Wilfrid’s Centre for the homeless and vulnerable on Queens Road Sheffield has helped many thousands of people who are less fortunate for the last 25 years.
A great afternoon was had by all when a team from car dealership Mike Brewer Motors visited for an afternoon of competition and games at St Wilfrid’s Centre. St Wilf’s clients challenged their near neighbours who have a showroom just across the road to games of table tennis, darts, pool and dominoes. There was a tremendous atmosphere of friendly competition and everyone threw themselves into the games. With plenty of laughs and good humoured banter, the afternoon’s events ended with St Wilfrid’s clients triumphant with a score of 31 – 29 to Mike Brewer Motors.

THE PRODIGY SET TO RELEASE “THE NIGHT IS MY FRIEND” EP If you’ve ever been to a British music festival, we can almost 100% guarantee that at some point you will have seen The Prodigy live. Whether it was Leeds Festival 2009, Download Festival 2012, the very recent Isle Of Wight Festival 2015 or countless other DJ sets the group feature in, The Prodigy are masters of the festival spirit. With a brand new string of tour dates announced for November and December 2015, the group are also to release their brand new EP “The Night Is My Friend” on 31st July. You can’t say they don’t treat us! 2015 has already been a massive year for The Prodigy. Having released their sixth studio album, “The Day Is My Enemy” in March 2015, the band secured their sixth consecutive number one release, making them one of the most successful alternative groups of all time. Kerrang magazine awarded the album their highest rating, describing it as “simultaneously galvanised by both a thrilling creative resurgence and the social unrest that comes when people are cocooned by a culture of fear,” whilst also calling it the most exciting and angrily British album of the year. NME magazine said “The Day Is My Enemy” was “their strongest and most confident album” whilst Consequence Of Sound cited “Beyond The Deathray” was “the most beautiful track in The Prodigy’s discovery.” Following on from this success, the group are now to release “The Night Is My Friend,” which includes album tracks “Get Your Fight On” and “Rhythm Bomb,” two fresh remixes and the previously unreleased, fan favourite “AWOL.” A track that the band have played live since 2012 although have never released, the single has now made its way onto the EP…however, be prepared for a totally unheard and reworked version…exciting! “The Night Is My Friend” is released on 31st July 2015 through Cooking Vinyl Records. “The Day Is My Enemy” is available now. The Prodigy are to perform at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena on 28th November 2015. Tickets are on sale now through www.theprodigy. com or www.facebook.com/theprodigyofficial

MUSE STILL RULE AS HEADLINERS Review: Muse, 13/06/15, Download Festival By Kt Evans It’s a commonly known fact that the mighty Muse are the best live band of all time. Whether you believe this or not, it was certainly hard to dispute at their headlining performance at this year’s Download Festival 2015. Seizing their 80,000 strong audience, the Southern rock group were every inch as powerful as their reputation suggests, with a set comprised of tracks from all seven of their gigantic studio albums. Muse are unquestionably a British institution. Masters of bringing progressive rock into a widespread genre, the group from Devon have won five MTV music awards, 6 Q awards, 4 Kerrang awards, an American music award and a Grammy. O’h and did we mention they have also sold over 17 million records worldwide? Whole heartedly living up to such phenomenal hype, vocalist Matt Bellamy was every bit on point throughout their ninety minute set, with pitch perfect vocals from start to finish. Opening up with “Psycho” from the groups most recent studio album “Drones,” it was evident from their very opening chord…this was going to be one hell of a show indeed. If seeing Muse just wasn’t quite exciting enough for the masses of soggy ticket holders who came out in force to show their support, Muse also treated us all to three live debuts from tracks off their stonkingly fierce new album. Hit “The Handler,” “Micro Cuts” and “Citizen Erased” were even more polished and professional than on their record, whilst also seriously sparking some “hair on the back of the neck” moments. This really is the beauty of Muse… not ones to pursue idol chit chat throughout their set, each and every minute on stage is in full dedication to producing their very best work…and hell does it make for a cracking show! Closing their performance with “Stockholm Syndrome” from their 2003 belter of an album “Absolution,” Muse returned back to round their set off with a three song encore. Arguably the best moment of Download Festival 2015 was quickly to follow, with the opening riff of legendary Muse classic “Plug In Baby” blasting out through the speakers. Although released over fifteen years ago, the track embodies all that is Muse…timelessness.

ACCLAIMED YORKSHIRE FOLKSINGER TO APPEAR IN SHEFFIELD Critically acclaimed folksinger, Dan Webster is performing at The Greystones, Sheffield on 16th July as part of his UK tour to debut his new album, ‘The Tin Man’ which reached number 3 in Amazon’s Folk Chart. Popular Yorkshire based singer-songwriter Dan Webster is a maverick in the folk music world, influenced by sounds and storytelling of American and British traditions, Americana and Rock and Roll. His new self-produced release for 2015 ‘The Tin Man’ is the pinnacle of his work to date, receiving rave reviews in the press. Webster explores folk, country and rock and roll across the album fusing these styles throughout the body of the work. Dan has 3 albums to his credit; the latest hitting number 3 in Amazon’s Folk
Chart. Live, he inspires attention; pulling you into his work with finely crafted melodies and lyrics - delivered with a powerful, and honest vocal. His previous album release ‘Diamond Land’ received a number of plays on BBC Radio 2 and was well received critically in the York Press. His 2012 single release Frank Dalton was nominated for Fatea magazine’s track of the year. “The Tin Man is British singer-songwriter Dan Webster’s third album release and perhaps his finest moment to date. A coming-of-age where his song-writing, arrangements and performance all match in quality.” Maverick Magazine “This is a record that all should own, and is the campaign rallying cry for a genre trying to make its voice heard in a crap filled cluttered world called the music business. The standard is set” Americana-UK.com Folk Radio UK described The Tin Man live as: “Mixing folk, country and even a little rock ‘n’ roll, all delivered with a clear, distinctive voice, some great playing and an immaculate sound, it stopped me in my tracks.” Tickets are available at The Greystones.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker
Back on the glorious River Derwent this week, and although conditions were not perfect, with bright sunshine and cloudless skies, I only get one day per week to fish, so have to make the best of it! The stretch I’d chosen this week is about the most ‘un-urban’ piece of city river I’ve ever seen. It nestles nicely at the back of a retail park, allowing easy parking and access to a number of likely fish holding areas which are easy to reach within a hundred yards of the car park. Although the banks are covered with a variety of prickly, stinging nettles, hawthorn, bramble and all sorts of other plant life, the club have cut a number of swims which provide comfort, cover and

tranquillity yards from the hustle and bustle of everyday city life; it’s brilliant! My river fishing is a lightweight affair, a couple of Sonik SK3 Twin Tip rods offer the versatility to tame almost anything depending on what moves into the swim, a brolly, a pair bank sticks, a bait bucket and a small rucksack contain everything I need for a few hours on the bank. I have to point out that I always carry a roll up unhooking mat too, which clips to my rucksack, as I believe it to be one of the most important bits of kit I carry, and ensures the fish are safely handled. Occasionally, I’ll take a chair, but more often than not, I’ll find a comfortable grassy knoll, stretch out, and watch the world go by…. As I stealthily approached the water, (well, as stealthily as I can lumber) I startled a stoat which was bounding up the path towards me. It leapt into the air and scurried off into the undergrowth with the usual haste, but it was an absolute pleasure to see one up close, and a clear sign that the habitat supports all manner of wildlife. I set up a couple of leger rigs, tying a four turn water knot to give me a paternoster that would allow the feeder to sit on the bottom, but leave the hook baits wafting clear of the streamer weed. I added a maggot feeder to one rod, and a cage feeder to the other, which was stuffed with pellet based groundbait and micro pellets. Hooklinks were constructed with Vardis Tackle fluorocarbon and a size 10 hook, and baited with a big bunch of maggots, and on the other, a pre-drilled pellet to complement the contents of the cage feeder. I like to feed a constant trickle of bait whilst

river fishing in summer, and despite packing the feeders, I like to keep a bit going in, so flicked out three or four maggots or a pinch of pellet every thirty seconds or so to try and draw fish from downstream. My baits had hardly been in the water for twenty minutes when the first telltale dips of the tips started to indicate fish, and it wasn’t much longer before a chunky bream made off with the bait! Fish on! River fish invariably fight much harder than their stillwater counterparts, so tackle has to be up to the job, but it can still be great fun on balanced kit. I had to keep changing my bait to keep bites coming, so breadflake, chopped down Mainline Baits wafters and pre-drilled pellets kept the action steady for a couple of hours before I bumped a bigger bream off and sadly spooked the shoal which brought the session to a close… Even though I didn’t land any barbel, I had a very productive couple of hours in peaceful surroundings and caught decent fish during the session. I also witnessed the stoat, shared my peg with a couple of rabbits, flicked maggots to hordes of ravenous margin minnows, and saw a multitude of songbirds which kept me entertained…what’s not to love about the river?

FOOTBALL NEWS VINCENT SASSO SIGNS FOR OWLS Sheffield Wednesday have signed Braga defender Vincent Sasso. The Frenchman has joined the Owls on a season-long loan. The 24-year-old began his career with French top flight outfit Nantes, with whom he signed his first professional contract in 2008. Sasso – a versatile stopper who can operate in central defence and at full back – swapped France for Portugal in summer 2012, joining S.C. BeiraMar before catching the eye of Portuguese giants Braga the following January. The European ace signed a deal with Braga until 2017 and could now be in line to face his former club in the friendly clash on Friday 24 July during the Owls’ pre-season trip to Portugal. On the international stage, the towering defender has represented France at youth level from Under16s through to the Under-21s and will now add further steel at the back for Wednesday.
LEEDS V OWLS MOVED FOR SKY The Owls’ clash with Yorkshire rivals Leeds United at Elland Road will be broadcast live on Sky Sports. The fixture will take place on Saturday 22 August. Kick-off of the televised derby has now been brought forward from 3.00pm to 12.30pm.
TURNBULL LOOKS AHEAD Lee Turnbull, who was appointed to Nigel Adkins’s backroom staff as Head of Recruitment and Scouting last week, is looking forward to what he describes as a ‘very exciting opportunity’ to work with a manager he knows well. A former striker in his playing days, Turnbull says the chance to resume a productive working relationship with Adkins and his coaching staff was a major factor in convincing him to swap Glanford Park for Bramall Lane. The 47-year-old, who lives in the region, remarked: “Having been at Scunthorpe for 20 years in different roles, it was tough to leave, but the chance to work with Nigel, Andy (Crosby) and Dean (Wilkins), coupled with the fact it is for a Club with the ambition like Sheffield United have the simply it is a very exciting opportunity. “I have been in the area for nearly 30 years, I live in Doncaster and I know the local football scene very well as you would expect. “The Blades have a great stature within it and hopefully I can play my part in helping the Club be successful and getting back into the Championship is the first and only focus at the moment.” On his role and the experience he brings with him to S2, Turnbull is confident of using his knowledge and contacts in a manner that will benefit the Blades both on and off the field, he added: “Recruitment is constant and rightly so, you have to be on the ball 52 weeks a year, although we do have Christmas Day off! “You get tip offs from agents, tips from scouts within or from outside your network, but crucially it is about getting out on the road and watching players regularly. “There are structures within the scouting mechanism and agents are part of the process, some are really helpful and it is good to continue that contact link with various people within the game. “It is always a challenge but I am confident we can progress quickly and there is every reason to be optimistic. There will be a structure throughout the Club, but my main focus will be about firstteam recruitment and watching the opposition as I have done under Nigel previously.”
