Just received a birthday card with ‘ Happy 40th Birthday’ written across the front. On the back it has written ‘ Not suitable for children three years or under.’ What kind of idiot would buy a 40th birthday card for a three year old? I was in a couple’s home trying to fix their Internet connection. The husband called out to his wife in the other room for the computer password. “Start with a capital S, then 123,” she shouted back. We tried S123 several times, but it didn’t work. So we called the wife in. As she input the password, she muttered, “I really don’t know what’s so difficult about typing Start123.”

Let Me Entertain You... (2 HOUR SHOW) 50s & 60s GOLDEN OLDIES LET ME SING ALL YOUR FAVOURITES An unresolved issue could come to a head, midweek. If frustration has been a part of the picture for some time, you now have the option to clear the air or perhaps find a way to compromise. Whatever happens, don’t allow things to drag on any longer. Call for more…
You have a chance to repair difficult family relationships, share resources and deepen intimacy - as a potent aspect encourages positive change. However, avoid being too forthright, as you’ll only prolong any difficult encounters. Call for your love scope…
You’ll accomplish more by pacing yourself and having a clear idea of what you hope to achieve. It’s better to liaise with others than to attempt to call the shots, as hasty decisions or an impulsive comment might be a reason for regret. Call for more news and advice…
Words have extra power, so be careful of what you commit to - and of what you say. Certain people may have a sharper memory than you might realize and will keep you to your word. And anyway there’s a chance you’ll want to stay quiet regarding ideas and feelings. Call for more…
Even though your communication skills rock, you may be hard put to persuade someone of your suitability for a job or project. Don’t waste time trying to change their mind, instead turn your attention to the things you can influence. Call now for more news and astral advice…
A dynamic alignment in your money zone suggests you may be tempted to buy a big ticket item, whether you can afford to or not. However, a challenging blend of energies can mean your judgment is off - so ask a trusted friend for their opinion. Call for your financial scope…
Though you might be keen to shell out money for a creative project or leisure plan, Tuesday’s Venus Saturn link suggests you might feel guilty about doing so. However, it seems you won’t feel completely bad about being totally honest with someone. Call for more news…
A conflict between personal plans and those of family or friends could cause problems unless you can find a solution that works for everyone involved. However, you might find it hard to compromise if you’ve invested a lot of energy in this idea. Call for your in-depth forecast…
If you’ve been putting pressure on yourself, try to go easy around the midweek mark and focus your schedule on must do things first. An inspiring New Moon also hints that upping the relaxation you achieve can make you more, rather than less, productive. Call for more…
You may be in two minds about whether to attempt something or not, with your doubts taking top spot at first. Yet, as the week gathers pace you’ll likely find your confidence develops and that you’re more willing to have a go. Call for more astral advice…
Is it time to look an issue in the face and do something about it, particularly if it’s been bugging you too much of late? Though you may be tempted to state your case, do so in a way that promotes solutions rather than a complete breakdown in communication. Call for more…
A friend may show a surprising side of themselves, which could prove to be a shock. Perhaps their antsy mood may be down to a fear of criticism regarding an idea they’ve been working on. Yet, you may get inspiration for a project that you’ll love to attempt. Call for more...

The Civic commission outdoor performance for Barnsley Mayor’s Parade
This Saturday during the annual Barnsley Mayor’s Parade will be outdoor performance, STEAM by original performanceparkour company The Urban Playground Team, cocommissioned by The Civic. Taking place on the May Day Green (near the Barnsley Markets), STEAM relives the imagined life of a locomotive inspired by the silent movies of Buster Keaton, the gunfights of the Wild West and the rooftop stunts of a James Bond thriller. Members of The Urban Playground Team perform “a dazzling display of rapid vaults, synchronized tumbles, and gravity defying spins” (The Irish Times) on an impressive metal train structure, specially created for the FREE outdoor performance. The Civic are thrilled to have co-commissioned Urban Playground’s new parkour, freerunning, dance & physical theatre production for family audiences.
Ian Morley, Theatre Programmer at The Civic comments: “A key priority for us at The Civic is to develop our visibility; to be a larger part of our local community, to reach new people and to introduce new work to our audiences through an exciting and diverse programme and we are proud to be presenting STEAM in this year’s Mayors Parade.”
The Civic will also be in attendance at the Mayor’s Parade to promote their activities and special offers to members of the public. STEAM will be performed on the May Day Green (near Barnsley Markets) on Saturday 11 July at 10.30am & 1pm* as part of the Barnsley Mayor’s Parade. FREE EVENT.
help children into reading Young readers and parents are invited to help set a new World Record by signing up to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. The free annual event, which begins in all Sheffield’s libraries on Saturday 11 July, challenges children to visit the library and read over the summer. Children will be asked to make a pledge to do this at the Central Children’s Library at a launch event on 11 July. Parents will also be encouraged to pledge to help children into reading over the holidays. The reading campaign is being coordinated nationally by The
SHEFFIELD SPORTS BAR IS A NATIONAL CHAMP The team at Champs in Sheffield is celebrating after being shortlisted as a national finalist in the Great British Pub Awards. Licensee Danny Grayson has been recognised as one of only five finalists in the Best Newcomer and Best Sports Bar categories and will go on to compete in the national awards which take place in London in September. Champs on Loxley New Road opened in February 2014 following a joint £500,000 investment with Punch Taverns,
Reading Agency. It will count pledges made from across the country, with a new Guinness World Record set if 100,000 pledges are made. Councillor Isobel Bowler, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “Reading with children is such fun and I’m sure Sheffield children will enjoy helping to set a new World Record. “It would be great if people would get involved by visiting the Central Children’s library and reading with their children on Saturday 11th July. “All Sheffield’s libraries have lots on offer for children and their carers not just on that day but there are free activities running throughout the summer holidays.” Councillor Jackie Drayton, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Children Young People and Families added: “It
is our ambition that all children and young people achieve their full potential and anything which encourages children to read is a great way of being successful in this aim. “It’s a fact that children often slip back in terms or reading when they’re not at school over the long school holidays. This initiative will help keep them reading and hopefully encourage a lifelong love of books. Good luck with the world record attempt as well.”
which transformed the former run-down Victorian pub into a cool and contemporary sports bar on three levels. With 31 large TV screens showing high profile sports all day every day, from Premiership football matches to horse racing and superbikes, Champs is a sports lover’s dream. The modern and welcoming interior, complete with a wide range of sporting memorabilia including a full-size motorbike (which proves very popular with younger customers) gives it a real edge over other venues. Licensee Danny Grayson said: “I could see the potential to create a high quality bar that would tap into our fascination with sports. Thanks to a creative approach and a focus on standards, we’ve created a winning concept. But, Champs is much more than that; it’s at the heart of our local community, sponsoring local football teams and raising lots
of money for local causes every year. It’s a space where families can come together and enjoy the match or just relax.” The sports interior is complemented with a strong food and drink offer, based on good quality and value for money. With a striking American grill theme, the menu includes favourites from American Ribs to Build A Burger and the Kamikaze Wing Challenge. All of the bar’s the food is from local suppliers and cooked fresh on the premises. Commenting on the recognition, Danny Grayson said: “The team have worked extremely hard to create this successful venue. It’s not just about the sports; it’s about the staff, all of whom are highly motivated and passionate about customer care and it’s about the community – a winning combination in anyone’s book! Let’s hope we bring home the trophy.”

First off…where the heckers did that freak heat wave come from? Here we were, donning our thermal underwear and that o’h so attractive fleece, unbeknown to us that temperature hotter than the Sahara was going to hit the UK. In came the factor 30, dodgy sun burn and desperately wishing it was socially acceptable to walk around in a string bikini…not just us right? If the weather is anything like it was last week for Tramlines Festival 2015, we are most definitely in for a mighty treat. So, to the nitty gritty. Tramlines. An annual music spectacular which established itself in the steel city six years ago, Sheffield’s finest weekend is once again in full force from 24th – 26th July. With bands, acts and solo artists galore, there are a few changes to this year’s event which need to be highlighted… first off, the main stage. Having previously been held on Devonshire Green in the city centre, this year’s biggest stage has been transported to Ponderosa Park. This is located just outside of the city centre, close to the old Jessops hospital and the new University library. Only a very short walk to the copious amounts of venues hosting Tramlines 2015, this move is to ensure each and every ticket holder can get a spot in the main arena. To the line-up. Arguably the strongest set of musicians Tramlines Festival has ever played witness to, 2015 is to host a wide range of genres to appeal to even the most bizarre music taste! Headlining the event and absolute masters of a party: Basement Jaxx. This two time BRIT award electronic duo are no strangers to hosting huge events. From regular DJ spots in Ibiza to taking the stage at some of the world’s most infamous festivals, the “Good Luck” stars are all about the party. Six studio albums to their name, internationally recognised floor fillers and masters of introducing house music into the
Wu-Tang Clan close the Main Stage at Ponderosa Park on Sunday Night
main stream, Sheffield is in for a mighty treat. Make sure you catch Basement Jaxx on the main stage on Saturday 25th July at 20:45pm. Along with Basement Jaxx, Wu Tang Clan are also signed up to the Tramlines 2015 line-up. Named by NME magazine as one of the most influential groups of the last decade, this American hip hop nine piece are sure as hell getting people excited for their performance. In 2008 they were voted by About Magazine as the best hip hop group of all time and have strong ties with the likes of Kanye West, Busta Rhymes and L.O.X. Wu Tang Clan are performing at Sheffield’s Tramlines Festival on Sunday 26th July on the main stage in Ponderosa Park. We guarantee you’re not going to want to miss this! The line-up also consists of local and unsigned talent to include The Ratells, former DQ DJ True Fiction along with resident and curator of Hope Works Sheffield Lo Shea. He will be performing at the venue on Sussex Road on Friday 24th July at 03:00am (did we tell you Tramlines is pretty much a 72 hour party? Certainly no rest for the wicked, make sure you stock up on some serious kip the week before Tramlines as we have a sneaking suspicion you’re not going to want to miss a thing. Who needs their eight hours anyway?!) A further Sheffield duo we are ridiculously excited to catch is Nai Harvest at Queens Social Club on Sunday 26th July at 20:00pm. Signed to Topshelf Records, this two piece are quickly making a name for themself both on home turn along with further afield. Reminiscent of mid-to-late 90’s emo, the group are bringing this sound back to life with a British twist. With the US press sniffing around Nai Harvest, Pitchfork wrote: “Nai Harvest have pensive vocals and tangled, jangling guitars…a manageable, strangely enjoyable hangover…the interplay between Ben Thompson’s bedheaded vocals and Lew Currie’s drums are both jittery and sleepy at the same time.” Check out their facebook page for full details on the band, including upcoming tour dates and their most recent ten track LP, “Hairball.” Other groups performing at Sheffield’s Tramlines festival include Rolo Tomassi, Mike Skinner, We Are The Ocean, Slaves, Hey Sholay, The Charlatons, Buzzcocks, Billy Bragg, Kate Tempest, The Sugar Hill Gang and many more. Tramlines 2015 is a ticketed event, with a full weekend pass priced at £30.00. This entitles you to access of all the venues Tramlines is hosting along with totally free entry into the main arena. Individual day tickets are priced at £23.00 and under 12’s go free alongside a full paying adult. Under 14’s must be accompanied by an adult, however some indoor venues are 18+ so please check the terms
23
If you have any news, reviews, releases/events you’d like us to cover please forward details to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk and conditions of each venue you choose to attend. Tickets must be exchanged for a wrist band in person at the event. Tickets can be purchased through the main website, www.tramlines.org.uk. See the website for the full line-up along with all the venues participating in the event.
START PLANNING YOUR WEEKEND
Tramlines have now released their full schedule for the weekend, detailing the running order for all 200 artists on its 2015 bill. New for this year, Tramlines' printed programmes are completely free and have been distributed around Sheffield and other key cities. Check out the Tramlines website for a list of programme pick-up points. Tramlines is one of the UK’s biggest inner-city festivals where, for one weekend, 100,000 people descend upon Sheffield to turn the city centre into one huge festival site. Now in its seventh year, Tramlines continues to bring genrespanning legendary acts alongside breaking new talent to its stages. Headliners for 2015 include The Charlatans, Basement Jaxx, and Wu Tang Clan, with support from the likes of Billy Bragg, Buzzcocks, Martha Reeves and Sugarhill Gang. Another first for 2015 is a brand-new scheduling feature on the festival's own website. The page lists the order of every act with the time and location of their set. It’s never been easier to plan your weekend at Tramlines and with over 200 acts appearing, festival-goers are recommended to start sooner rather than later! Weekend tickets are still available but are likely to sell out in advance of the event. They can be purchased from www.tramlines.org.uk for only £30 + bf. There is also a limited number of day tickets available, priced at £23 + bf.
Basement Jaxx make too headline appearances on Saturday playing both the main stage and O2 Academy

FISHING AT GRANGE FARMHOUSE Grange Farmhouse Bed & Breakfast will appeal to everyone. The exclusive nature of the farm makes it a must for the dedicated and pleasure angler alike. The excellent fishing is free on both lakes, which are exclusive for residents only. The first lake was established in 1986 and their second one in 2001, both are planted with a variety of reeds and bull rushes, together with traditional bank side planting. The lakes are brimming with superb quality fish; Mirrors and Common carp up to 15lb, Tench and Silver Fish also reaching excellent weights. For those not fishing, Grange Farmhouse have 15 quiet acres of gardens and countryside to relax in, plus a country lane to the rear of the property for a quiet stroll or walk with the dog. Children will enjoy feeding the fish in our ornamental pond. The lake is approximately 50m from the accommodation. The adjoining farmlands show an un-ending seasonal change of views. Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker
Have you ever organised a twenty four hour carp match? No, I hadn’t either until this week… I’m now engaged in some work for Go-Outdoors in Stoke-on-Trent who recently offered thirty five anglers the chance to fish at prestigious Baden Hall Fisheries for free, in an effort to land a £1000 bounty! Realistically, preparations started some time ago, with customers to the store invited to register their details for a proposed match over the course of two weeks, until we chose to randomly draw the lucky anglers out a hat; easy so far. Once those anglers had been selected, we then had to contact each one individually, either by email or telephone call, (thanks Deb!) and confirm each was able to fish. The venue wasn’t tricky to choose. Baden Hall offers some superb sport, is well looked after, has enough pegs on one pool to provide each competitor with plenty of room, and as we wanted everyone to catch, it just remained to negotiate a price with Jamie Goucher, the owner at Baden Hall. Once agreed, arrangements had to be made for payment, and when confirmed, we could go ahead with our match… simple! Except it wasn’t… The twenty four hours was to begin at 0800 on Saturday morning, meaning all anglers had to be present for a 0700 draw, so poor old Deb (thanks again!) had to recontact them all to confirm schedules and attendance, then we had to promulgate on social media, then we had to arrange closure of the pool with signage and web notification, and then we had to try and get enough marshals together to ensure smooth running…. Who said it was going to be easy? But that’s not all; marshals need feeding, so food has to be bought, sufficient drinks must be supplied, a bivvy headquarters had to be sourced, and a couple

of bedchairs provided and associated camera kit had to be considered. Then we had to get our team to the venue! It’s a good job I have a big van…. On the day before the event, several members of the team had to travel to the venue and walk around the ten acre pool with Head Bailiff Roy Russell to confirm all the correct pegs, the basecamp, and the after match proceedings; GO-Outdoors Health and Safety officers visited, insurance was arranged, and we were finally good to go! Fingers crossed…. Saturday morning came bright and warm. Our intrepid anglers gathered expectantly, and the draw was made before they all rushed off to find their chosen spot. At 0800, the whistle sounded the ‘All In!” and we were finally off and running! The weather was gloriously hot, a cloudless sky and warm breeze making conditions very pleasant for our entrants, but unfortunately, not so good for the fishing. A fairly quiet day followed, until early evening brought a glut of fish and some progress was made by three anglers who started to pull away from the pack… In the early hours of Sunday morning, after over eighteen hours on the bank, it started to rain… the drizzle gave way to bigger drops, and by daybreak, it was pouring. Not ideal for the marshals dotted around the lake, crouched under the trees in a desperate attempt to stay dry, or moving between pegs to weigh and return fish in the darkness, but much better for the fishing which started to improve with several anglers landing fish, and several more unfortunately losing them; the importance of which would soon be apparent! By 0700, it was obvious that one or two fish separated three anglers, who at one point, were all within just 3lbs of each other…just 3lbs between them and £1000! Andy Greensmith lost three fish in quick succession, Rob Hamilton’s swim went quiet, but Andy Bashford on the far bank continued to pick

GRANGE FARM LAKE
were all happy to depart at around 0930… an arduous twenty nine hours later! All anglers seemed to enjoy it, in fact the feedback we have had subsequently has been very positive, and we were pleased to see anglers making new friends, offering each other ideas, and generally relaxing on the bank. Was it a success? Yes, I believe it was; it reflected well on the company, the fishery and the staff, our anglers enjoyed it, and some of them indeed did very well out of it! All enjoyed a twenty four hour session at our expense, caught fish, registered new personal bests, and hopefully had fun, so when I was asked if I’d help do it all again, there is only one answer…. ….of course I would!

up fish and sneak ahead of the opposition. The lead had changed a couple of times, but as Andy Bashford continued to catch, the others fell behind with a series of lost fish and missed bites. Marshals continued to keep a running total, and furtive phone calls kept the result secret as the ‘All Out!’ approached, but, barring a monster, Andy Bashford looked a worthy winner. And so it proved. Andy weighed in 137lb 4oz off peg 28, closely followed by Andy Greensmith on 58 with 119lb 2oz (I told you those lost fish made a difference) and Rob Hamilton took third spot with around 105lb. It was soon time to retire to the clubhouse to reveal the winner, and our happy band all grabbed mugs of tea and pulled up a chair to await the result. After the required thanks were passed by store manager Dave Rawlings, it fell to me to acknowledge the winning anglers, appropriately in reverse order. Initially billed as ‘Winner takes all’, a hasty decision was made to award GO vouchers of £50 and £100 to the runners up, and a bucket filled with bait and a combined bag/unhooking mat was offered to the captor of the biggest fish. In the event, it was Jonathan Robbins who claimed it with a chubby mirror of just under 20lb. That just left the clearing up, loading the van with sopping equipment, and the return home for a shower and some much needed sleep. The marshals had almost no rest during a busy twenty four hours fishing, and after our day had begun at 0400 the previous day, we

STEFAN READY FOR HARD GRAFT Stefan Scougall says pre-season training gets no easier, but will have ‘lasting benefits’ to the players in the months ahead. United’s first-team squad begin their second full week of training on Monday and Scougall admits it has been a hard slog to date, something he thinks will continue at Shirecliffe over the coming days. The Scotsman remarked: “It is all about fitness work, it perhaps looks easier than what it is, but you are on the go all the time and it is completely different from training during the season. “But everyone knows it is a short term thing with lasting benefits for the long, grinding season ahead.” Scougall says the soaring summer temperatures are enjoyable, but not when you are working morning and afternoon on the training pitch! He added: “Everyone loves the sunshine, but it was roasting last week and made life even tougher at times, during pre-season we prefer it to be cloudy and overcast but it never happens. “Your main fitness comes from playing games though, so we are looking forward to getting through the hardwork ready for when the games begin later in the month.”
