RICHARD HAWLEY RETURNS WITH HIS BIGGEST EVER HOMETOWN SHOW Following the announcement of his eighth studio album Hollow Meadows, Richard Hawley will undertake a 13-date tour of the UK and Ireland. This will be his longest UK tour in three years and include his largest ever Sheffield show, when he plays his first hometown gig in over two years at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena on Friday 6th November. Tickets went on sale last week, priced £27.50 when purchased online at www.motorpointarenasheffield. co.uk or through the Arena ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56, or £26.25 when purchased in person from the Arena Box Office. This will be Richard’s first headline show at the Arena and will be performed in the reduced capacity venue The Steel Hall, bringing the audience closer to the event He has previously appeared on the Arena stage with Pulp, Elbow, Paul Weller and REM. The tour will be in support of Hawley’s new album Hollow Meadows, which will be released via Parlophone Records on September 11th. Recorded at Sheffield’s Yellow Arch Studio in spring 2015, Hollow Meadows sees Hawley return to the classic,

sophisticated song-writing and subtle arrangements that made him so widely loved and revered in the first place. Meditating on such themes as ageing, fallibility and relationships, much of the album shares a brooding, yet wistful and romantic atmosphere in keeping with early albums Late Night Final and Lowedges, as well as touches of 2009’s Truelove’s Gutter and Standing At The Sky’s Edge. For the first time ever, Hawley demoed the songs in his shed studio (‘Disgracelands’) with his long-time guitarist and confidant, Shez Sheridan (who also coproduced the album with Hawley and Colin Elliot). This allowed him to enter the studio with fully realised songs, and many of those original demos were so strong, they form part of the finished album, including the vocal to the sublime opening track, ‘I Still Want You’ – Hawley at his most vulnerable and romantic, with one of those choruses that only Hawley seems capable of writing, like a ballroom spotlight on a glitterball. The album features some notable guests from the UK folk scene, Hawley’s neighbour and friend Martin Simpson, and Nancy Kerr. Other guests include one of Hawley’s oldest and dearest friends, Jarvis Cocker, and the Hick Street Chip Shop Singers, who are made up of various Sheffield luminaries, including Slow Club’s Rebecca Taylor. Hollow Meadows is an album full of exceptional songwriting, beautiful melodies and harmonies, and some of the finest lyrics and vocals Hawley has ever written and recorded. It will further cement his reputation as one of Britain’s greatest songwriters of the past 15 years. The album will be available on CD, digital download and gatefold double vinyl.

ALBERT SNODGRASS

A fun part of middle age is waking up thinking you’re hungover. Then remembering, nope, this is just how my body feels now. Jack goes to his friend Mike and says “I’m having an affair with the priest’s wife. Can you hold him in church for an hour after mass for me?” The friend doesn’t like it but being a friend, he agrees. After mass, he starts talking to the priest, asking him all sorts of stupid questions, just to keep him occupied. Finally the priest gets annoyed and asks Mike what he’s really up to. Mike, feeling guilty, finally confesses to the priest “My friend is having an affair with your wife right now, so he asked me to keep you occupied.” The priest smiles, puts a brotherly hand on Mike’s shoulder and says “You better hurry home now. My wife died a year ago”. I’ve never tried inhaling helium for amusement. But people speak very highly of it. I’m not saying I’m lonely or anything, but the only time my phone lights up is when the battery is fully charged.

The International Peace Gardens with Smoke Barbecue is once again the centre point of the community festival, with fantastic international, national and Steel City acts curated by Musical Works. On Saturday, Papa Al has programmed a high-energy line-up with a strong global influence, from soul and rumba through to afrobeat and funk. Highlights include Congolese party-starter Gordon Masiala and perennial Sheffield favourites Jungle Lion serving up riotous ska. This means you will receive a nationally recognised Level 1, 2 or 3 BTEC Diploma in Music. This can also lead to an apprenticeship in Music Business, or University. Sounds good right? performances by the Stars Band, it’s set to provide a great snapshot of the diversity and quality of Sheffield's emerging musicians. The International Peace Gardens will be replete with some of Sheffield’s favourite food traders, including Smoke Barbecue, who are bringing a bucking bronco alongside delicious ribs! Beyond the International Peace Gardens, brilliant street theatre - supported by the National Fairground Archive – returns to Barker’s Pool. The street theatre programme includes old favourites and new acts sure to delight and entertain all ages. Likewise, the fairground returns to Fargate along with a stage and bar for great music right in the centre of the city. The much-loved, free, familyfriendly side of the festival is possible thanks to Tramlines, Sheffield City Council and generous sponsors such as Smoke Barbecue. In order to secure the future of the community festival, Tramlines plans to establish a charitable arm, the Tramlines Foundation. Keep your ear out for more on this after the festival.

See you in the studio!

NOW OPEN

Cllr Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “If the government is serious about rebalancing the economy to create growth across the country, instead of concentrating it in London and the South East, they need to put the substance behind their rhetoric. It is time to give Sheffield the investment that is needed to drive economic growth. Sheffield City Region is leading the way in advanced manufacturing and technology. Now we need the investment in infrastructure and the growth sectors that will be essential to build on these strengths and create the high skill, high wage economy we want in our region. This should be the focus of any devolution deal. “This is about more jobs, better jobs, and building a thriving economy for the people of Sheffield, now and for generations to come. It is clear that the government are determined to impose mayors as part of this process, and throughout the negotiations we have kept all options on the table. But the government need to demonstrate that they are willing to put greater investment, and local control over the programmes we need to deliver results, in return.”

SIGN UP YOUR VENUE TO HELP WESTON PARK HOSPITAL CANCER CHARITY ‘FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY’ Now into its second year, For One Night Only encourages clubs, pubs and bars alike to support the work of Weston Park Hospital by hosting a variety of fundraising events throughout the year. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. The charity needs to raise over £1.8 million this year to enable the funding of committed and new projects that will keep Weston Park Hospital at the forefront of cancer treatment. Last year, thanks to support from venues across South Yorkshire, For One Night Only raised over £15,000 and helped directly improve the lives of over 75,000 cancer patients receiving treatment at Weston Park Hospital. Throughout 2015 the charity will fund various projects to enable the continued improvement of Weston Park Hospital; including the expansion of research studies, improving the way cancer treatments are delivered and supporting the ongoing care provisions of patients and their families affected by cancer.

Charity Fundraiser, Lucy King said, “For One Night Only is a chance for all pubs and clubs who have perhaps supported us previously or are looking to do so for the first time, to hold an event at their convenience whilst raising money for the Cancer Charity.” “The charity relies on support from within the community and we’re hoping that with the success of last year’s campaign, more venues will choose to support the cancer charity this year.” “We’ve already had sign ups from various venues across the region and we’re hoping that this will encourage others to support their local cancer hospital in 2015.”

29 PUBS LOST EVERY WEEK ACROSS THE UK CAMRA is launching a new initiative to protect 3,000 pubs from demolition or conversion to other uses - as new statistics released this week show 29 pubs a week are being lost across the UK.

NEW ERA FOR DAVY’S SPORTING CLUB Estabished back in the sixties when it was associated with local steel industries Sheffield’s Davy’s Sporting Club on Prince Of Wales Road, Darnell is still going from strength to strength. And after twenty one years at the helm Dave Smith is taking a well-earned rest as he takes early retirement with Richard Warwick now taking over running the club. Continuing in the same vain Richard is keen to take the club to the next level as he plans to stage special regular events and beef up the already excellent facilities. The club has one of the largest outdoor playing areas in Sheffield with many local clubs taking advantage of the football pitches, bowls facilities and full-size cricket field. The club also has its own teams with the football team Davy F.C. having had great local success over the years. It also has great transport links from the M1 via the A619 Sheffield Parkway. Inside the venue are squash courts, snooker and pool table plus a fully equipped free-weights gym.

CAMRA will be mobilising its members in England to nominate their local pub as an Asset of Community Value (ACV) and offer advice and guidance to other community groups looking to do the same. Currently pubs can be demolished or converted to other uses without planning permission, whereas pubs with ACV status are given planning protection under laws introduced in April.

With 800 pubs currently nominated, the initiative aims to raise the profile of ACVs to the pub-going public and increase the number with the status to 3,000 by the end of 2016 – an ambitious target, but one which CAMRA say is essential if England’s pubs are to be properly protected. For more information about the ACV campaign, please visit www. camra.org.uk/list-your-local

There’s a well-stocked bar and large function rooms all available to hire at very competitive rates. With a large wooden floor one function rooms is ideal for local bands, dance nights and wedding parties. Most medium sized events can be catered for which the team at Davy’s are more than happy to help with. With a large safe car park Davy’s Sporting Club is well placed to cater for all your sporting and social needs so give Richard a call about corporate availability

and special membership details on 0114 244 2936 or email info@ davyssportingclub.co.uk

THREE MOUNTAINS TO CLIMB FOR CHARITY

Their gruelling challenge is to climb the three highest mountains of England, Wales and Scotland and all within 24 hours! They will be covering 25 miles and more than 3,000 metres of climb on foot over Snowden, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis and over 500 miles on road. The team would like to raise equal amounts for these two important charities and would appreciate any donations Mercury readers would like to give to encourage Chris and the team over those mountains.

This Friday Mercury reader Chris Roadhouse and other members of the Paul’s 3 Peakers team, will undertake a truly mountainous challenge for 2 local charities; the Rotherham Organisation for Down’s Syndrome, a charity close to Chris’s heart which does a great job of supporting hundreds of families throughout South Yorkshire, and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

If you would like to donate please follow this link: www.mydonate. bt.com/teams/pauls3peakers

Live Review Kiss @ Download Festival 2015 by Katy Evans

It is absolutely unquestionable to deny that Kiss are the ultimate God Fathers of rock. Having sold over 60 million records worldwide, the back bone of the industry are pure masters of their craft. With the mighty task of closing this years download festival 2014 to over 90,000 spectators, Gene Simmons and company were every big the showmen we expected with the ultimate best set of the entire weekend. Picture this if you will. A rainy, damp Sunday evening in the middle of a muddy field, beer cans spilling out a bin (and by bin, we totally mean commercial skip) with at least a handful of mud men far too drunk to even remember their own name. What on Gods Earth could make this experience at least a fraction entertaining? One word...Kiss. If salt is to pepper and chips are to cheese, kiss are to metal. Legends not only in their genre but also with their famous stage makeup, the group kicked off their ninety minute set with killer single Detroit Rock City. Fun fact for all of you, this massive single was first performed in concert on

23rd April 1976 at Mildred’s Temple Kitchen in Toronto. The perfect way to thrust the heaving audience into the life and soul of the kiss rollercoaster, it was more than evident just how phenomenal their performance was going to be. Other hits within their massively anticipated set included Creatures Of The Night, I Love It Loud and Do You Love Me. Never one to be shy of a good old party, Gene Simmons proceeded to breath fire within hit War Machine, along with freaking the heebie jeebies out of us all by spitting copious amounts of blood. Oh and did we mention quite how long the notorious bassists tongue is? We’ve all heard the rumour that he is...blessed with a freakishly long tongue, however to witness this in real life, it is actually rather disturbing. Closing their set with Black Diamond, the band returned for a three song encore to include Shout It Out, I Was Made For Lovin You and Rock n Roll All Night. Although a let down not to witness God Gave Rock And Roll To You performed live, kiss will forever remain one of download festivals most memorable performers. And hell did they deliver.

NEW SINGLE

by Katy Evans

Sheffield’s very own piece of metal core madness, Bring Me The Horizon have released a brand new single Happy Song this week. Having teased fans with bizarre umbrella emojis throughout their social media platform, Happy Song is the five pieces first official release in over nine months. Happy Song is the long awaited new track from the steel city clan who last released a set of new (and somewhat controversial) tracks last October. This includes Drown, a hit with more bite than a caged circus tiger, along with Don’t Look Down which was recorded for the re-scoring of the Ryan Gosling classic Drive. A deviation from what you might have expected from the Chelsea Smiles screamers, these new tracks showed a more polished repertoire which highlighted the bands progressive nature. Happy Song was featured on the Radio Rock Show on BBC Radio 1 on 12th July. An instant trend on twitter and social media, the hit is now available to purchase on ITunes. However there has been no confirmation as to whether the single

is the main release from the packs upcoming album, or if it will indeed feature on the release at all. The groups most recent studio album, Sempiternal was by far the bands most successful record to date, flying in at number 1 on the UK album charts in April 2013. With hits to include Shadow Moses, Sleep Walking and Antivist, the album marked a mature sound for BMTH which saw ex Worship member Jordan Fish join ranks. With the introduction of a hugely increased synth section, not to mention their progressive technical style, Bring Me The Horizon hit commercial success through the UK and beyond. Although everyone is exceptionally tight lipped about the upcoming album, if Sempiternal is anything to go by, we’re in for a mighty big treat. Happy Song is available to purchase on iTunes along with on the groups official website www.bringmethehorizon.co.uk. The group are performing on the main stage at this years Leeds and Reading Festival. Check out their website for full details.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

I am not at all happy… I had been looking forward to a session on the beautiful River Derwent, and I was fairly confident that I would be able to sneak a bite from a particularly pleasant swim, so when I did, I was gutted to get snapped! Not once, but three times! I arrived at the peg, and in truth, it smelled terrible; I couldn’t work out why, although there were drag marks and a rather large bag of ‘something’ waiting to be collected, which wasn’t nice, but the river looked in fine form after rain, so I held my nose and set up. As always on the river, my favoured Sonik Sports SK3 rods were quickly put together; I’d selected a 3oz tip to deal with a stronger than usual flow, and set up with 10lb line straight through to a size 8 Vardis Gripper hook and a 2.5oz lead to hold bottom. A hefty lump of meat went on the hair, and it was lobbed out into midstream. A second rod baited with a Hybrid boilie followed, and after catapulting some pellet and maggots out, I sat back to wait. The first bite arrived within minutes, which was somewhat surprising considering it was midday, the sun was up, and it was getting warmer. The rod tip bounced once, then slowly pulled down towards the surface of the river as something moved off strongly upstream. I lifted the rod, felt a decent kick and a good fish surged away… then the line parted! I

couldn’t believe it; 10lb line parted like cotton! My knots were good, so as I reeled in, I inspected the line and felt a multitude of abrasions and nicks indicating that the barbel had headed for the nearest snag… and got there! Once I’d rigged up again, the bait went back out, although slightly further downstream. I sat down, and looked on disbelievingly as the rod arched over and another barbel raced away! I leapt (gazelle like indeed!) towards the rod butt, picked up the rod, and tightened into another fine fish which thudded away strongly. A couple of minutes of battle ensued, during which time I hadn’t even seen the fish, but I was making headway…then the line snapped again! Now this was bad news… Once again, the line was frayed and battered, and although I hadn’t felt a snag, it was obvious that these fish knew something I didn’t. After considering my options, I had no wish to lose any more fish, so began to pack away. The first rod was broken down and secured, and as I reached for the second, it ripped off the rest as a third fish hit the bait! By this time, I was feeling more Quint than Clint, and seriously considered whether I should have come armed with yellow barrels and a harpoon; the power in these fish was unbelievable! I lost this one too; same result, the line parted on whatever lay beneath the surface. Thankfully, I’d been using barbless hooks and running rigs, so I know that the fish will have been able to shed the hooks freely, nevertheless, I was angry with myself for losing all three fish. What galled me even more, sometime later, I saw a post on social media… you guessed it, someone else had been to the same swim, and landed a gorgeous golden torpedo, which obviously one of the fish I’d lost earlier!!! Aaaaaahhhhhh! Next time, I will be using 15lb line… any recommendations? (The smell by the way, was apparently a dead horse which had drowned earlier in the week!)

NEW DEAL FOR DIEGO Diego De Girolamo has committed his future to The Blades by signing a new twoyear contract, with the option of a third. The 19-year-old put pen-topaper on his new deal at United's Shirecliffe training base with Assistant Manager Andy Crosby and Managing Director Mal Brannigan in attendance and the striker is confident the 2015/16 campaign will be a productive one under new manager Nigel Adkins and his coaching staff. The young marksman, who has been capped by Italy at U18, U19 and U20 level, gained valuable first-team experience with York City and Northampton Town in League Two last term and De Girolamo feels those stints will have aided his development for the challenge ahead with The

Blades, one that he is particularly excited about. Speaking after agreeing to extend his deal with United, having being with the Academy since the age of seven, De Girolamo remarked: "It would be fair to say last season didn't go to plan for me personally, but having thought at length about the situation and having discussed it with my representatives and family over the summer, we all came to the conclusion that my future remains with Sheffield United for at least the next two years and hopefully beyond. "I have begun pre-season with first-team squad and like everyone else I am determined to impress the new Gaffer and his staff. It has been tough but I am feeling fit, strong and raring to go. "I am keen to prove myself and hopefully if I do that it will lead to a number of first-team opportunities in the months ahead, that's my aim and I am going to work extremely hard to make it happen." In total, De Girolamo has made nine appearances for the Club, since making his debut in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy against Coventry City in December 2012.

PALMER BACK IN BUSINESS WOOLFORD IS FIRST SUMMER SIGNING Last Saturday marked the beginning of the Owls’ preseason fixture schedule and it was a day that couldn’t come soon enough for Liam Palmer. An ankle injury back in March saw the defender’s season come to an abrupt halt and with that in mind, Palmer is keen to make up for lost time. The 23-year-old played the first 45 minutes against Alfreton Town and was pleased to be back in the old routine. Having stored his first test of pre-season under the belt, Palmer is now ready for more as the Owls head to Ilkeston on Wednesday. He said: “I’ve been putting in the hard work and feel good, feel fit so I think in a few more games I’ll be right back where I need to be. “It was great to get some minutes under the belt because it’s been a while. “The summer has been tough but

35

the physios at the club have been top class and there with me every step of the way.” Liam now looks to the future with plenty of excitement and ambition with new head coach Carlos Carvalhal at the helm. He explained: “The head coach is getting his ideas across to us in training. We’ve had double sessions, triple sessions and we’re working really hard to get things right. “It’s exciting times for the club and we can’t wait for it all to start. “We had a good test on Saturday to ease us back in and now the games start to come around a bit quicker and we go again at Ilkeston on Wednesday.”

WIN A STUNNING BMW AT OWLS OPENING GAME As excitement builds towards the start of 2015/16, Sheffield Wednesday are delighted to mark their first game of the season with a unique free prize draw that will see one lucky supporter win a brand new BMW sports car! Three seasons have passed since Wednesday last hosted a curtainraiser and the Hillsborough clash with newly-promoted Bristol City promises to be a memorable occasion. A host of new Owls will make their home league debuts on the state of the art Desso pitch, overlooked by a giant screen that takes proud status as the biggest in the Football League. And while a Wednesday win may be the icing on the cake for the lion’s share in attendance on 8 August – for one lucky fan, the coup de grace will be driving home in a brand new BMW 318d Sport Saloon, courtesy of Sytner Sheffield BMW. Every supporter inside Hillsborough will be included in the free prize draw, with each Season Ticket and matchday ticket having a unique identification number. SWFC chairman Dejphon Chansiri will take to the pitch at half time to randomly select the winner. Sheffield Wednesday’s Chief Operating Officer Paul Bell said: “This game is our most eagerly anticipated opening fixture for many seasons. “We want to add to the excitement in every area possible and are excited ourselves by the prospect of one incredibly lucky supporter winning a BMW, just by attending the game! “We would like to thank our club partners Sytner Sheffield BMW for helping to facilitate such a fantastic opportunity to mark the beginning of what we all hope will be a truly memorable campaign.” Don’t miss your chance to be part of this fantastic occasion with the opportunity to leave in a brand new BMW! As an added extra, there will be one runners-up prize of executive hospitality at Hillsborough and a third prize of a home Owls shirt signed by the first team squad. The BMW 318 Sport will be showcased at Owls in the Park 2015 this Sunday, 19 July, when everyone in the Wednesday family is invited to attend one of the biggest, free football fun days in the country.

Nigel Adkins has made his first move in the transfer market with Martyn Woolford arriving at Bramall Lane. The 29-year-old, an experienced Championship operator, formerly of Scunthorpe United, Bristol City and most recently Millwall, joins United on a two-year contract, with the option of a third. The Pontefract-born frontman made 38 second tier appearances for the Lions last season and Woolford is no stranger to Adkins and his coaching staff, with the player having worked with the Blades boss during their time together at Glanford Park. On adding a player he knows well to his squad, Adkins remarked: "We signed Martyn at Scunthorpe and he scored the winning goal at Wembley to win us promotion from League One. "We are very aware of the talents Martyn brings to Bramall Lane. He can play in several attacking positions, is fit, strong, robust, honest, hard-working and has a fantastic professional attitude. He has been consistently available for

selection over many seasons and knows the demands required of this level." Woolford began his career in the Northern Counties East League, spending three seasons with Glasshoughton Welfare, prior to impressing during a term with Frickley Athletic in 2005/06. The England C international then joined York City for a five-figure fee in August 2006 and scored 23 times in 74 league starts during his two-year stint at Bootham Crescent. Woolford and Adkins linked up for the first time in August 2008 with the winger penning a threeyear deal at Glanford Park. In the 2009 League One play-off final at Wembley, he scored one and claimed two assists as Scunthorpe beat Millwall 3-2 to win promotion to the Championship. In January 2011, Bristol City paid an undisclosed fee for Woolford's services in the Championship, prior to him signing for Millwall under Ian Holloway during the January transfer window in 2013. Woolford, is excited by the challenge at Bramall Lane and remarked: "Being a Yorkshireman I know how big this Club is and I'm looking forward to getting started with the lads. It is great to be working with Nigel Adkins once again and everyone knows what the major goal is."

ROVERS JET OFF FOR PORTUGAL The Doncaster Rovers first team squad head to Portugal this week looking to step up their pre season preparations ahead of the League 1 campaign. "It's a great exercise for us out there,” said first team manager Paul Dickov. “People might think it's a good old jolly up but it's far from that! “There are three/four sessions a day and it's a great opportunity for me to get the players together and it is a new group of players as well.” Dickov was speaking after a routine 2-0 win over local non league side Frickley Athletic, which put some more miles in the legs. “It was typical pre-season game, especially first half we knew Frickley were going to work ever so hard, coming up against a team with professional players,” he said. “It was about topping up the lads’ fitness levels, I wanted them to be tired coming into this game to see how they reacted. "I knew the lads would be tired, I've taken a few liberties with them in the few sessions since we've been back but one of the main things we have to be is fit next season and we have to make sure that we are peaking at the right time which is Bury game." Rovers entertain Nottingham Forest in a pre season friendly at Keepmoat Stadium on Tuesday 21st July (7:45pm) in the lead up to the 15/16 season which kicks off against Bury..
