ALBERT SNODGRASS
“I’m worried about this new spaniel puppy,” said my mate. “Do you think anything’s wrong with him?” “Perhaps he’s interbred,” I suggested. “Maybe,” he frowned. “I’ve only been feeding him meat.” The best thing about lending someone your time machine is that you get it back straight away. The inventor of dog treats has died earlier today. He was a good boy. Yes he was. My new year’s resolution was to be able to do 100 push ups by next New Year’s Eve. I’m on 87 at the moment. Hopefully I’ll reach the 100th by December. “Nice greyhound; fast as well. Have you considered racing him?” asked this bloke in the park. “No, not really,” I replied. “I’m far too unfit and out of condition.” What do you call a Magician’s dog? A Labracadabrador. Last night my girlfriend and I watched a few DVDs back-to-back. Luckily, I was the one facing the television. Those push-up bras don’t work very well do they? I’ve been wearing my wife’s and I still can’t manage more than eight. I went to the library to get a medical book on abdominal pain. Somebody had ripped the appendix out.

Described by a journalist in the late 1970’s as the only true underground music movement in the UK, the phenomenon that is Northern Soul has recently been thrust back up into the mainstream limelight by hit box-office movies, number one CD releases, several TV documentaries and even adverts for breakfast cereals featuring original followers of the faith dancing to a soundtrack of rare and classic soul records. On Sunday 2nd August one of the surviving legends of the Northern Soul live circuit, Tommy Hunt, will be appearing on stage at The Woodseats Soul Club performing his classic hits that in the heyday of Wigan Casino had 2000 northern clubbers crammed onto the dance floor. Tommy’s colourful career has seen him work and play alongside such soul and R&B greats as James Brown, Sam Cooke, Tammi Terrell, Otis Redding and B.B. King. As a member of one of his first groups, The Flamingoes, he also performed on the same bill as Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens the night before all three of the rock ‘n’ roll stars were tragically killed in a fatal plane crash. And Tommy himself is far from a stranger to the dangers and perils of touring having once almost literally losing his head at a concert in the middle east when he inadvertently insulted the Shah of Iran by failing to address the ruler as ‘his Imperial Highness’! “I called him Sir by mistake”, recalls Tommy. “And the Iranian aide who’d briefed me on the correct etiquette was waving his arms wildly and pulling his hair out convinced we were both for the chop!” Tommy further added to the Shah’s displeasure when, while in mid-performance, he encouraged several members of the Ruler’s female entourage to leave their seats on the front row and get up and dance. “It was a serious situation,” says Tommy. “The aide was fearing for his life as much as mine. He thought I may ‘disappear’ on my way back to the airport!” After the show an armed guard escorted Tommy to a private audience with the Shah and the singer expected the worst. “He was sitting silently and staring at me. Then he suddenly shook my hand and told me it was one of the best concerts he’d ever seen!” By 1960 Tommy had left The Flamingoes to pursue a solo career and scored his first major hit in the U.S. when a New York radio DJ played the wrong side of
his latest record by mistake. “I never liked the A-side anyway,” declares Tommy. “I told my manager it was too slow, ponderous, like a death march!” After the B-side, entitled ‘Human’, was aired, the radio station’s switchboard was swamped with requests for the song and the record became Tommy Hunt’s biggest ever American hit single. Shortly afterwards Tommy would also be the first artiste to record the Burt Bacharach/ Hal David composition ‘I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself’, which would later become a massive hit for both Dionne Warwick and U.K. blue eyed soul songstress Dusty Springfield. After a decade of Worldwide success Tommy, like several of his contemporaries such as Edwin Starr and Major Lance, made the move to settle in Britain where the Northern Soul clubs embraced them with open arms. “I remember when I arrived by taxi to the gig at Wigan Casino,” says Tommy. “As the car pulled up I said to the driver, ‘This can’t be it, I’m booked into a casino!” Expecting something akin to Las Vegas Tommy was informed that the run down theatre before him was indeed the correct venue but the stunned singer still refused to get out of the car convinced that the rowdy mob milling around outside were going to eat him alive! Escorted eventually into the building by Wigan DJ and promoter Russ Winstanly, Tommy was further aghast by the amount of people laying fast asleep around the dancefloor. “I was stepping over bodies and I said Russ, why are there bodies everywhere?” Winstanley matter of factly informed Tommy that at these all-night events.. “They dance for a bit, then they go to sleep, then they dance some more!” However you can rest assured that nearly four decades later no one will be sleeping at the Woodseats Soul Club all-dayer with an audience of die-hard Northern Soul fans traveling countrywide to dance to Tommy’s hits ‘Crackin’ Up Over You’, ‘Loving On The Losing Side’ and ‘Soul In The Sun’ amongst others. A meet and greet is also scheduled after the performance where Tommy will sign autographs and chat to fans and also be hopefully meeting up with some old faces from the days when he was a regular performer and visitor to Sheffield when he sang and socialised in such clubs as Bailey’s and The Fiesta. The Northern Soul All-dayer will also feature vinyl record DJ sets from DJs Nigel Filmer, Stevlor, Little Stevie Squires. Soul J, Abby R, Johnny Green, Bobby T, Jas, Pete Angus, G.T. and Andy Cheetham, plus record dealers and merchandise stalls.

expected to descend on the city between Friday and Sunday to enjoy performances from hundreds of bands across more than 16 venues. Over the course of the weekend, the Streets Ahead team will collect around six tonnes of litter that festival goers will create on the streets alone. Cllr Terry Fox, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We welcome all the visitors to the city who will be coming to enjoy Tramlines but we are also encouraging them to help us keep our city clean. We will have lots of points where festival goers can dispose of their litter, so please use these and help us keep Sheffield looking beautiful over the weekend.” Darren Butt, Streets Ahead Operations Director, said: “We’re ready and raring to go ahead of this year’s festival. It’s one of the biggest challenges we face over the year in terms of street cleaning, but we’re prepared for the extra waste that will be created over the weekend. “We have more operatives than usual working in the city centre over the period of the festival. They did an excellent job of cleaning up during and after the event last year and we were complimented on the high standard of work carried out, despite such a large number of visitors. I’m sure we can achieve a great result again.” Extras bins will also be placed around the city centre to cope with the higher volume of litter and will be regularly emptied by the Streets Ahead team. Litter pickers will also be around the city centre keeping the streets litter free.

Let Me Entertain You... (2 HOUR SHOW) 50s & 60s GOLDEN OLDIES LET ME SING ALL YOUR FAVOURITES The Jupiter Saturn connection can bring doubts about whether to go ahead with a project or fun idea. However, Friday’s Full Moon in Aquarius might spotlight more manageable entertainment opportunities, adding sparkle to the weekend too. Call for more advice…
Although your social life seems upbeat, you’ll also want to save money - so make a start by looking for thriftier alternatives. This doesn’t necessarily imply an inferior experience either, as in some cases it could be so much better. Call for your financial scope in full…
Home and family projects look upbeat, although you might clash with a significant other concerning the best way to proceed. If you can’t see eye to eye, a compromise may be necessary. Later, Venus’s moves back into Leo, spotlights family dynamics. Call for more…
Over the next couple of weeks it’s time for you to feel the fear and do it anyway. However, Venus’s move back into Leo suggests reflecting on your priorities with a view to focusing on the goals you’re most enthusiastic about. Call your prediction line for more advice…
As Saturn rewinds, pressures at work could leave you feeling somewhat overwhelmed. Delegate where you can. Meanwhile, your charismatic personality can help you negotiate a special opportunity. Finally, the weekend brings a chance to party. Call for more advice…
Although your sights are set high, a developing Jupiter connection encourages you to listen to your feelings regarding a challenge you’ve set yourself. If you’re going to succeed, you may need to tone down your expectations. Call me now for more news and astral advice…
Shopping can be a lot of fun if you have a little bit of spare money, although a significant other might not feel the same. If someone seems keen to put limits on your spending, it could take the edge off your enjoyment. Call now for your financial forecast in full…
Though friends can be a source of support, you may find them rather limited in their outlook this week, so much so that opting for other more positive activities might seem preferable. Go easy over the weekend though, opt for small luxuries. Call for more news…
Family responsibilities can seem to get in the way. You may need to scale back your plans in order to fit everything in. Later, the Full Moon can spotlight social options you never knew you had. Perhaps it’s time to be more adventurous. Call for more news and advice…
Opportunities to work alongside others can bring results that would otherwise be impossible. However, Friday’s Full Moon can spotlight tensions that may need careful handling. Yet, voicing your concerns might help bring edgy issues into the open. Call for more…
The cosmos encourages you to look beneath the surface rather than focus purely on circumstances and events. As you do, you’ll find you connect with your intuition and on any helpful short cuts to the results you’re after. Call me now for your in-depth forecast…
As Venus continues its retrograde phase, resist the urge to make commitments and be careful what you put in writing. You can still advance on the job, or in personal situations, but try not to jump to conclusions. Take time to chill on Friday. Call for more advice…

Support Isabella’s Big Charity day!
On 15th August at 3pm the family of a very brave little four year old girl are holding a huge fundraising event in aid of the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund. Based at Leeds General Infirmary, the fund supports vital research into chronic heart conditions in children, and also funds Eckersley House – an enormously important facility providing accommodation and support to families when children are in hospital. At the age of only three weeks, Isabella was diagnosed with a rare condition called ALCAPA (a major anomaly of the heart) with no other option than a fourteen hour operation in Leeds at the specialist unit. Fortunately almost four years’ later she is on the mend. Since then the family have devoted themselves to helping fund the invaluable work of the charity, and a recent charity ball at the Copthorne in Sheffield raised over £5000, whilst Sue Helliwell (Isabella’s grandma) and her daughter Vicki Lloyd recently added a further £700 by
means of a sponsored 5k walk! The Friendship pub in Stocksbridge are hosting the Family Fun Day – attractions include a bouncy castle, tombola, raffles and sideshows and there are some amazing prizes on offer, kindly donated by a host of local businesses. These are too numerous to list individually, but include tickets for both United and Wednesday matches, vouchers to spend in Hillsborough Exchange, vouchers
for nights out at several local hotels and attractions, and many other wonderful gifts! Sue & Vicki would like to thank all the businesses and organisations that have contributed prizes, gifts and support in many ways, not only for this event but also over the past few years, and they have especially asked us to thank their family for the wonderful support that has helped make all this possible!
Tickets for Youdan Trophy final in big demand Organisers of Sheffield’s new Youdan Trophy international football tournament have been inundated by ticket requests for the Bramall Lane final on July 31st. Over 800 applications have already been received and scores more are being received daily. James Hope-Gill, Youdan Trophy Tournament Director, said: “Interest has been at an all time high since the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Talib Hussain, unveiled the Youdan Trophy at Sheffield Town Hall last week.” The stunning bronze statue is the work of Barnsley’s revered ‘people’s sculptor’ Graham Ibbeson - the man famed for his life size Dickie Bird statue in his hometown and his celebrated Eric Morecambe statue in Morecambe. The tournament is celebrating a Sheffield footballing first the Football Challenge Cup presented by Thomas Youdan Esq. The little-known competition was the world’s first ever football tournament that pre-dates the FA Cup by a full four years and was played only once at Bramall Lane in 1867. It has become the inspiration for the new Youdan Trophy. Sheffield-based You-Are-TheRef.com, which is the world’s
leading independent authority and education platform for match officials, are behind the creation of the tournament that is set to see invited youth teams at under 14 level from as far away as Australia competing. Glasgow Celtic, Glasgow Rangers, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic, Brentford, AFA Nerang Eagles (Gold Coast) and FAB Academy are lined up to take part. Sheffield schools and grassroots teams are set to be the beneficiaries of thousands of pounds worth of footballing kit being used at the event. The equipment will be donated by Youdan Trophy sponsor, Precision, following the final. The Nottingham-based company are providing thousands of pounds worth of footballs, sportswear and other equipment for the international tournament that is bringing the global stars of the future to the Steel City. The Youdan Trophy tournament will take place at Sheffield Hallam University’s Sports Park from Monday, July 27 to Friday, July 31. The final will take place at Bramall Lane on July 31 at 3pm. Free tickets for the final are available from www.youdantrophy.com The Youdan Trophy is being delivered in partnership with Marketing Sheffield, University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, Precision, Meadowhall, Blenheim Estates and Brew & Bean.
AMAZING ENTERTAINMENT RETURNS TO THE SUBURBS Surburbs is trying to breathe new life into the concert room of the Centre Spot in Basegreen, a place that saw Joe Cocker play to a full house in the Sixties. Since April the management have invested in a new sound and lighting system. In July it held a Matt-fest in aid of Matthew Cryer, and it was a huge success, but they are coming back bigger and better in 2016. They have a pre-tramlines gig this Thursday with Stillwave from Holland, check them out on www.stillwavemusic.com and are supported by Catalysts a three piece Indie/Rock group from Sheffield. The management are also giving £2 off your first drink with advanced tickets to the following: 23rd July: Stillwave/Catalysts 15th August: Sheer Heart Attack/ Chris Michael Jackson Hicks On the 8th of August Fiddlers Green are performing and it’s a free pint of Guinness with advanced tickets for this event. In September the Surburbs are showing an exclusive screening of Beverley, a film by Cass Pennant plus music from fabulous Skank Bros and Trojan Explosion. Also keep a look out for various charity events in aid of local worthy causes.

TOP TEN BANDS TO CATCH AT TRAMLINES THIS WEEKEND By Kt Evans
Arguably the best weekend Sheffield has to offer, Tramlines Festival 2015 is returning to the steel city from 24th – 26th July. This weekend will see over a hundred artists perform across a host of venues in and around the city centre, alongside attractive over 50,000 ticket holders to join the
If you have any news, reviews or events you would like featuring please email info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk
party! Here at Mercury, we’ve come up with the ultimate guide to Tramlines 2015 with our top ten acts to catch this weekend…you can’t say we don’t treat you! Before we get into the nitty gritty, there are a number of things you need to be aware of surrounding Tramlines 2015. Unlike previous years, the three day inner city event is once again ticketed, meaning you will need to purchase your ticket prior to the event. These can be bought on the Tramlines website with either individual day tickets or a full weekend pass available. Once you have made your booking, you will then need to collect your wristband upon entering the event, meaning that you’re then free to roam around all Tramlines hosting venues. Please be aware that a handful of the venues are over 18 only, so please check the website before you plan your weekend. Another change from previous years you need to be aware of is the location of the main stage. Having being hosted on Devonshire Green since its very first year in 2009, due to a much larger capacity, the main stage is now located in Ponderosa Park. Only a short walk from Sheffield’s City Centre, this new host will ensure everybody can enjoy main stage action with plenty of space. Maps are available to download on the tramlines website, so we suggest you take a look before you head on down to the event this weekend. Ok, so to the fun bit…who to watch?! As we’re sure you are now well aware, Tramlines Festival is famed for hosting way over a hundred artists, musicians, bands and acts across its three day spectacular. However, this undoubtedly results in dreaded clashes, which mean that pre-planning is essential to not miss your favourite performers. Number ten on our list of bands to catch this weekend goes to Slaves on the main stage at 19:30 on Friday 24th July. This two piece lo-fi group from Tumbridge Wells are described as “British punk with harsh bluesy garage riffs,” having had their debut album, “Are You Satisfied” fly in at number 8 on the official album charts. Number nine goes to the mighty Mike Skinner who shall be performing at The O2 Academy on Saturday night at 00:00am. Former front man of The Streets, Skinner is every bit the show man with this honest lyrics, humorous topics and cheeky chappy persona. One of the flagship performers at this year’s event, we suggest you arrive at the venue as early as possible to avoid disappointment. We’ve awarded number eight of our top ten bands to catch at Tramlines 2015 to Hey Sholay at 19:30 Saturday within Sheffield’s Cathedral. We cannot begin to imagine how spectacular the Cathedral stage will be, which is positioned at the bottom end of Fargate. Sheffield’s Hey Sholay are certainly no stagers to the lime light, having been exposed to national airplay from the likes of Radio one and BBC six. One of the Steel Cities most promising packs, support the locals and make sure you catch these on Saturday evening. Number seven goes to Blessa on the Devonshire Green stage (formally the main stage which has

If you have any news, reviews, releases/events you’d like us to cover please forward details to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk now been moved to Ponderosa Park). These will be performing at 18:00pm on Saturday 25th July, with the mighty stage taking up the entire radius of Devonshire Street. Number six, well that goes to The Charlatans on the first day of Tramlines, Friday 24th July at 20:45pm on the main stage. Since their formation back in 1989, the group have been pioneering Britpop on an international scale. With twelve studio albums under their belt, not to mention a plethora of experience, The Charlatans are true professionals in action. We have awarded our number five position of bands to catch at Tramlines Festival 2015 to Sheffield’s Rolo Tomassi at the City Hall on Saturday 25th July. With a set time of 19:00pm, this local sibling pack are as fierce as a caged circus tiger. Front runners within the international mathcore music scene, brace yourself for arguably the biggest mosh pit Tramlines has to offer.
Number four…well this one goes to Sheffield’s Nai Harvest at 20:00pm Sunday on The Queens Social Club stage (listen to their debut album, it’s bloody brilliant) whilst number three position is awarded to classic punk rockers Buzzcocks on the main stage at 15:40pm on Sunday afternoon. Number two? Sheffield’s Slow Club who are takin to the Devonshire Green Stage at 19:00pm on Saturday evening leaving us with only one position remaining… We could preach here to you about how many records they have sold or how many venues they’ve headlined, however a group with the fan base as big as theirs needs little introduction. With a set time of 20:45pm at Ponderosa Park on Saturday 25th July, ladies and gents, our top bands to catch at Tramlines 2015 goes to no other than the mighty Basement Jaxx. You’re welcome.
KENDAL IS CALLING FOR THE TENTH TIME Kendal Calling Festival Preview by Josh Smith
Its back and it’s bigger than ever! Kendal Calling, which returns for the 10th year is rapidly becoming one of the best festival the UK has to offer. It’s now a far cry from the quaint capacity of 900 the festival boasted back in the early days when the festival was held in Abbott Hall Park overlooking Kendal castle, attracting bigger and bigger artists each year. Proud owner of the title, best Medium Sized Festival of 2013 in the UK, this year Kendal Calling is sold out and expected to see up to 13,000 eager festival-goers awaiting some of the biggest names the music business has to offer. Now on to the line-up, and Kendal you have not disappointed (no wonder it’s a sell out!) from the headliners to the up and coming acts looking to make a name for themselves, it’s looking pretty awesome. This year’s headliners are definitely worthy of the old cliché, ‘something for everyone’. At one end of the spectrum we have a local North West band Elbow with their stadium filling anthems including one of the most memorable songs of the last few years, ‘A day like this’. Then in the distance, far away at the other end of the musical spectrum we
have one the biggest international music icons in singer, songwriter, actor and overall Hip Hop legend Snoop Dog, fully expect the main man to drop Kendal like its hot! Then rounding off the eclectic mix of festival headliners we have the Kaiser chiefs, aiming to provide the rolling hills of Kendal with their Indie tinged anthems, probably resulting in a mass sing-along and predictably a riot. But it’s not all about the headliners, don’t forget to pack in as much action as you can with hundreds of artists playing across the three days over 16 stages. The ‘Calling Out stage’ always provides listeners with something different, giving them insight what could be the future main stage performers but at the very least a few new tunes for the playlist. The festival however has much more to offer than just the music, probably one of the reasons it’s so popular with festival goers of all ages. The festival offers some of the best local ales and ciders (at a pretty reasonable festival rate we’ve been promised) as well as performance arts, late night cinema and loads, loads more. Let’s hope everyone is ending each festival night with some wise words by the Levellers…. What a beautiful day!

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker
An invite to a new venue this week. Millbrook Fisheries in Staffordshire opens officially on 7th September, and I was extremely lucky to be asked to go for a look around and to wet a line to see if I could catch one of the pristine carp which reside within… Arrangements were made to meet at 0700, but I could hardly wait and turned up early, so I was very glad to see that Fishery Manager Lee Stokes was already there and busily getting ready for the session. The fishery supply all cradles, mats, slings and landing nets to maintain bio-security, so Lee pointed out my kit, and we walked to the bottom end of the lake to discuss tactics. Millbrook covers about 4.5 acres, and is stocked with just over 200 fish, of which about 70 are over 20lb; the biggest recorded weighs around 29lb, and they are growing fast! There are only 12 pegs, so each angler gets plenty of water, and the intention is to offer 36 tickets only, currently priced at £40. We arrived at peg 1, and Lee pointed out a number of spots where carp were actively rooting up the silty bottom and releasing huge clouds of bubbles indicating that they were feeding hard. He also explained that this was the deepest end of the lake, with odd spots that dropped away to 7’, and the far

end was by far the shallower, with depths averaging just over 4’. The wind was pushing in hard, so we decided to set up in adjacent pegs to see if we could tempt one of the feeding fish. It’s two rods only at Millbrook, and I was advised the solid bag tactics work well, so that was my plan of attack. The first bag was filled with crushed fishery own pellets, and a short rig baited with a Mainline Essential IB which was offered on a short pop up rig. I have great faith in this particular bait as an ‘instant’ bait with good levels of leakage and a bright colour, so if there are fish about, it usually gets noticed! I plopped the bag in about two rod lengths out into the lily lined bay, and turned to fill a second bag for the other rod. Again, fishery own pellets were used, (they feed the fish with them, so it’s silly not to use them) and a small amount of crumbed Cell with a glug of liquid additive to see if that bought results. I’d just about sealed the rig into the bag when the alarm indicated a take and I was into my first Millbrook fish! A spirited battle resulted in a scraper double hitting the mat; considering the fish had spawned recently, this one was in fine condition and fought hard before being safely returned. I didn’t take a picture as I was assured there would be more to come… You’ve guessed it; I had one more run shortly afterwards which I subsequently lost, then aside from a few more bleeps, nothing else all day! Lee however, was offering a masterclass; during the session, a total of five fish to 23lb fell to a simple stiff hinged rig baited with a bright pink pop up. Regularly recasting to likely areas saw fairly steady action as Lee explained to me exactly how to fish the venue; if you book on, listen to his advice! I was happy enough to take the trophy shots and enjoy the warm weather, and before I knew it, our time was up and we both had to depart…
Millbrook is a fantastic new venue and has plenty to recommend it. Secure car parking with locked access, electrified otter fencing to protect the stock, CCTV surveillance to ensure safety of anglers, clean toilets, shower block in progress, a small outlet for bait and bits and much more. All pegs are huge, with plenty of room for the biggest bivvy or shelter, each is well laid out and finished with bark chips, and all are beautifully landscaped. The paths are all paved, so no mud or ruts, and it’s perfect for the less mobile angler too. You do need to book, you cannot just turn up and expect to walk in, it is designed to be the perfect fishery for anglers who want security, peace and quiet and decent fish without being bothered by others. If that sounds like your thing, then check out www. millbrookfisheries.co.uk and ring 01782 550522 to secure your spot.

OWLS MIDFIELDER LOOKS FORWARD Kieran Lee says there is positive pressure for the Owls to kick on this season. A new-look Wednesday side will begin their Championship campaign on 8 August against Bristol City at Hillsborough. And Lee believes high expectations and competition for places will serve everybody well at the club. Carlos Carvalhal and the squad are hard at work behind the scenes and are set to jet out to Portugal on Wednesday for the five-day training camp. Lee said: “Everyone is enjoying adapting to a new style and I think the fans will enjoy it too. “We want to entertain and score goals from all over the pitch. We’ve got new players coming in and there is expectation on us. With that comes pressure. “We know the pressure is on and
that’s a good thing for the group and everyone is looking forward to the challenge. “With more competition, each individual has to fight that bit harder for their shirt.” Ahead of the Owls’ trip to Portugal, where they will face a stern test against SC Braga, Lee is looking forward to the change of scene as he explained: “It’s good to break up pre-season by going to Portugal and it will be tough out there. “We know our schedule, we’re playing a good team with a different style of play but I’m looking forward to it. “It’s all good preparation for us for a difficult season ahead. There are a lot of clubs who will feel they have a chance of promotion, we know it will be a tough year but we have to focus on ourselves.”

CHARITABLE MORGS LORD MAYOR HAILS OWLS IN THE PARK Chris Morgan is keen for the three nominated charities to benefit from his testimonial fixture. The former Blades defender, captain, caretaker manager and current U21s coach will take centre stage when Premiership Newcastle United arrive at Bramall Lane on Sunday (26th July) for a 1pm kick-off. Although the game will be a rigorous pre-season test for both the Blades and Magpies, the fixture was set up to honour Morgan’s 12-year contribution at S2. He, however, has opted to share the limelight with three worthy causes. Local charities Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Weston Park Hospital, along with the Gary Speed Trust, will benefit from exposure and donations from the fixture. “The charities benefitting from the game was hugely important to me,” said Morgan. “I didn’t want to get loads involved because it dilutes what you can give them. So, on advice, I picked three. The three selected are great charities. “I’ve been a patron at Weston Park for a number of years now and I did a 10k for them a couple of weeks ago. Bluebell Wood is an organisation that have been involved with the Club
for a number of years and they do tremendous work, so I’m delighted they are involved too. “With it being Newcastle, with the connection with them and John Carver being so close with Speedo, it seemed obvious that the third was the Gary Speed Trust. “I spoke with Roger, Speedo’s dad, and he was over-the-moon about it. Both clubs were pivotal for him during his career. His family will always hold Sheffield United, where he finished his career and became a manager, as dearly as anyone else.” With a week to go until the fixture, more than 4,000 tickets have been sold and it is hoped a bumper attendance will pay tribute to Morgan’s contribution as a Blades, as well as supporting the nominated charities. Tickets are priced £15 adults, £10 adult season ticket holders, and £5 all concessions.
ADKINS PLEASED WITH PROGRESS After kicking off the senior preseason friendlies fixture list with a victory at Ilkeston and looking forward to a couple of days in the west country, Nigel Adkins declared himself pleased with the progress being made. The new manager took his place on the touchline in a Blades tie for the first time as United faced nonleague Ilkeston FC on Saturday, a late goal from teenager Dominic Calvert-Lewin securing a 1-0 win. “It was the plan to give everyone 45 minutes, in the end Flo (Cuvelier) came off as a precaution and we threw on Louis Reed, but it was a good work-out, just what we needed. “Keeping a clean sheet was pleasing but there’s a lot more for us to do. Diego (De Girolamo) and Michael (Higdon) both had chances, but it was all about getting minutes in the legs. We’ve spent three weeks doing lots of fitness work and now we can start doing more with regards to tactics. “We had Brayford, Flynn, Kennedy, Done, Alcock and Coutts all out injured and we didn’t want to risk Martyn Woolford after just a couple of days training, but the rest of the lads all featured. Kieran Wallace and Connor Dimaio, who went in at full-back, have never played those positions before and they coped admirably. The make-up of the squad we have at this moment dictated that but they did very well.” Looking ahead, Adkins added: “The focus now turns to the games at Cheltenham (Tuesday) and Exeter (Thursday), which should also be interesting tests. “We’ll look to start pushing the lads up to 60 minutes as fitness builds, whilst being away for a few days gives myself and the coaching staff the opportunity to get to know the lads better at close quarters. “I’m hoping both fixtures provide us with good tests, results aren’t hugely important at this stage, fitness is the key, but we’ll be taking in more and more as we build up to the Newcastle fixture next weekend.”
Last Sunday’s Owls in the Park was a massive success with more people than ever attending the club’s community day including Sheffield City Council’s Lord Mayor Councillor Talib Hussain. Joining leading Sheffield charities and organisations the Lord Mayor took time to meet fans and players throughout the day which saw thousands of people visit Hillsborough Park. The event saw almost 30 charities set up camp to raise money and awareness for their organisations with many of them offering
something different to the event including South Yorkshire’s biggest dog show from Support Dogs and Star Wars characters from St. Luke’s Hospice. Lord Mayor Cllr Talib Hussain said: “It was great to see so many families out in force this weekend at the community funday. I was honoured to meet so many hard working fundraisers. Sheffielders really show their true steel at events like this – raising cash for those who need it most.” Thanks to everyone who attended the event and we’ll see you next year!
IT’S THE RIGHT CLUB - ATS New signing Aaron TaylorSinclair has said that Doncaster Rovers is the “right club” for him to progress at. The 24 year old defender put pen to paper on a two year contract after departing Wigan Athletic. “I’m over the moon to come here and after speaking to the manager I knew this was the right club for me to progress in my career,” said the Scot. “I just want to get back playing again. I had a tough spell at Wigan not playing as much as I’d wanted, but I just want to get back playing and enjoy my football again as well as performing well. “I try to be as close to a modern day full back as you can get. I like to get up and down the pitch, I always give 100% and that’s what I want to bring to the team.” Taylor-Sinclair cited the influence
of fellow countryman and new manager Paul Dickov on the transfer. “Speaking to the manager and hearing his thoughts and plans for the upcoming season made me want to come and play my football here,” said TaylorSinclair. “Paul had a massive influence on me coming here. After speaking to him and finding out what he sees for me here can only be good going forward. “Tomorrow [versus Nottingham Forest] will be important game time in the first home pre season friendly. You can do all the training you want but it’s the matches where you get your real fitness and I’ll hopefully be a part of some of the game tomorrow and I look forward to that.”
MILLERS OPEN DAY Rotherham United will host an official Open Day where supporters will be able to meet the current first-team squad. The doors to AESSEAL New York Stadium will be opened to supporters on Monday 27th July, with the Millers first-team squad taking part in an open training session followed by autographs. There will be a host of other activities for supporters to enjoy with full details set to be confirmed shortly. Chief Operating Officer Paul
Douglas said: “We are delighted to confirm that the club will be hosting an Open Day at the end of this month, giving our supporters the chance to meet the players, including our close season signings. “Plans for several other activities are also currently being finalised with a full agenda set to announced in the coming weeks. We look forward to seeing as many Millers as possible for this very popular event.”
EVANS REVEALS NEWS ON MATTOCK Rotherham United manager Steve Evans confirmed that defender Joe Mattock’s injury isn’t as serious as first feared. The left-back was forced off during the Millers 3-0 victory over Greenock Morton on Saturday, but Evans confirmed that x-rays revealed no break in Mattock’s ankle resulting in only a short spell on the sidelines. “Paul Warne and Mike Preston took Joe away for an x-ray late on Saturday evening because there was a little bit of swelling around the ankle joint,” Evans told Millers Player. “We came away from that with two things. The best news is that the x-ray showed that there are no breaks in there, so there will be another scan later today to
ascertain what the swelling is. “We are hoping that it’ll be just a couple of weeks. Overall we had a fantastic response by the staff at the hospital, and it was good news for Joe.” Evans also revealed that his players will be given extended playing time when they take on Dundee tomorrow night at Dens Park, kick off 7.30pm. “We’ll be strong, we’ll probably ask players who did 60 minutes to go nearer 80 minutes,” Evans confirmed. “The players who did 70 minutes would be moving nearer to 90 minutes, because it is important that the majority of the group have had a 90 before the games against Leicester and Mainz.”
