ALBERT SNODGRASS

I went down the local green grocers today and asked for three pounds of Potatoes. The guy shook his head “Its kilo’s nowadays mate” “Oh, Three pounds of Kilos then please” My wife says I waste money on gadgets we don’t need. At least, that’s what it says in the email she sent from the toaster. There was a massive queue outside the snooker club this evening. I think it must have been too big to play with. “So you’re able to carry shopping to a customer’s car free of charge?” I asked the guy in Tesco this morning. “Yes.” he replied. I said, “Can you carry mine for me?” He said, “Sure.” As we walked across the entire distance of the car park, I suddenly stopped beside my motor and said, “I could’ve carried it myself but I’m a lazy sod.” “I gathered that.” he replied, “Here’s your KitKat.” Just had a train run over my feet, probably my own fault for wearing platforms. In April, the Met office announced a high probability of an August heatwave. So I booked August off work. Now they’ve announced they were wrong, it’s going to rain. Their ‘high probability’ was apparently 65%. Amazing. I can predict the weather to within 15% of the Met office’s accuracy by tossing a bloody coin.

Samantha Kennedy, Director of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, will be amongst a group of walkers stepping out on the 15th August as part of ‘Team Weston Park’ to raise vital sponsorship for the cancer charity. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for Weston Park Hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. For the first time ever, the charity has organised a dedicated day where supporters of the charity’s work can walk alongside one another and help raise funds to keep the region’s specialised cancer hospital at the forefront of research, treatment and care. “I’ve set myself this personal challenge, not only to raise money for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, but also to encourage others to join our ‘Walk & Raise’ team.” Said Samantha. “Walking the Yorkshire 3 Peaks is an excellent way to increase fitness levels whilst taking in some breath-taking views simultaneously.” “Every day I’m humbled by the stories I hear from people who support our charity; raising money in memory of loved ones or whilst facing personal challenges through cancer. I thought it was about time that I did something similar, as I’m fortunate enough to be healthy enough to undertake a challenge such as this.” The stunning route will take in parts of the Pennine range then encircle the heads of the valleys of the River Ribble and of Chapel-leDale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Samantha continued, “This year, the cancer

charity must raise over £1.8 million to fund various projects which will enable the continued improvement of Weston Park Hospital; including the expansion of research studies, improving the way cancer treatments are delivered and supporting the ongoing care provisions of patients and their families affected by cancer in our region.” “We rely on people taking on fundraising challenges for us which ultimately helps support patients receiving treatment at Weston Park Hospital and with half of people born since 1960 expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, our support is vital now, more than ever before.”

An ex-serviceman from Sheffield who was injured in the line of duty is being enabled, by funding from Help for Heroes, to help unemployed young people gain confidence and develop employability skills with the UK’s leading youth charity, The Prince’s Trust. Twenty-nine year old James Dawson has gone from serving in the army to becoming a Team Leader on The Prince’s Trust Team programme in Sheffield. James is one of over 100 wounded servicemen and women to have benefitted from the partnership between Help for Heroes and The Prince’s Trust. Now in its 5th year, Help for Heroes has awarded £760,000 to support the placements of wounded, injured and sick (WIS) military personnel on The Prince’s Trust programmes, benefitting over 1000 young people around the UK. In the army for over eight years, James received a medical discharge after suffering serious injuries to his leg. Back at a recovery centre in the UK, he was feeling anxious about the future. “I was expecting to be in the army for at least the next 20 years, after the medical discharge I was thoroughly demoralised. I had no idea what to do next.” It was during this time that James was approached by someone who worked for The Trust. Now responsible for delivering the Team programme for 16-25 year olds at Sheffield College, James and his teams have completed numerous community projects to improve their local area. As a young person, James often found himself in trouble before enrolling in the army. “My life was perfectly laid out of me but I was rebellious, I went down the wrong track.” James feels this rebellious streak as a teenager coupled with his recent military career have helped him address issues facing young people he works with. Keen to pass on the knowledge he’s gained from his own experiences, James is determined to use what he’s learned to help disadvantaged young people create a positive future for themselves, crediting Team as the place to do so. “For anyone thinking about whether

they should take part on Team, I’d say it’s the biggest change you can make in your life. It opens so many doors and opportunities and if nothing else, it’s a fantastic experience.” Celebrations for the Team programme’s 25th anniversary were kicked off with a nationwide campaign by Prince’s Trust Celebrity Ambassador Alesha Dixon when she photobombed a group of young people taking a team selfie in London. The youth charity is now calling on the public to tweet their own team selfie – known online as a ‘Teamie’

– with the hashtag #lovemyteam to mark the Team programme’s 25th year and inspire other young people to sign up to the programme. Prizes will be awarded to people using the hashtag throughout the month2. Kathleen Britain, Head of UK Community Investment at Barclays, said: “We are proud to support the Team programme as part of our ongoing partnership with The Prince’s Trust. We’re celebrating the anniversary of the Team programme and the inspiring young people who have taken part in it over the last 25 years. As part of our commitment to 5 Million Young Futures, we

are committed to helping the next generation build the enterprise, employability and financial skills they need to achieve their potential. Together, we are enabling young people across the UK to gain employment, become financially independent and ultimately contribute to growth in the local economy.” Youth charity The Prince’s Trust helps disadvantaged young people gain the skills and confidence to find work. Three in four young people helped by the charity move into work, education or training.

Drivers - Do You Know The New Laws? 62% of Brits admit to speeding – making it the most common law broken in the United Kingdom - and most of the time people are aware they are breaking the law! But did you know about the seven new motoring law changes being introduced in 2015 which means a huge risk of breaking the law accidentally? With punishments ranging from fines and points on your licence to months behind bars, you need to know what they are! Drug Driving This is an easy one to get wrong! If you don't use illegal drugs, you don't have to worry - right? Wrong! This law change includes prescription drugs, and certain ones such as diazepam, methadone and morphine are specifically named. The law states that “it’s illegal in England and Wales to drive with legal drugs in your body if it impairs your driving”. The Institute of Advanced Motorists discovered that almost one thousand arrests have been made up to the beginning of July 2015. As a consequence drivers could be facing bans, large fines or even

imprisonment. Police now carry "drugalysers" to screen for certain illegal drugs, and can still arrest motorists who pass this test to screen for other drugs at the station.

2015 it will be able to smoke in a car when carrying a passenger under the age of 18. Penalties are yet to be confirmed, although early reports indicate a fixed penalty fine of £50 is the likeliest option.

with ownership of the vehicle - new owners have to purchase new tax immediately or risk a penalty. The only concession is the new 12 month direct debit scheme, allowing drivers to spread the cost.

HGV Speed Limits The speed limits for HGVs were increased by 10mph from April 2015 - to 50mph on single carriageways and 60mph on dual carriageways. This was explained at the time as an "update" to old legislation .

Make a Plea In order to free up time in Magistrates' Courts, the new "Make A Plea" service will allow access to a secure website 24 hours a day on which motorists can dispute summary motoring offences. Previously the only way to argue your case was to plead "not guilty" and attend court. Following a trial in Greater Manchester, the process will now be available nationwide for motoring offences - and may very well be widened to include all minor offences in due course.

So beware when buying a used car advertised as "taxed" - it isn't!

Safer Lorries Scheme Do you drive in London? Then you need to be aware that from September 1st all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are required to have additional safety equipment for use in London, including extra mirrors and sideboards to protect cyclists and pedestrians. Anyone driving a non-compliant vehicle faces a £50 Penalty Notice or a Magistrate's Court fine of up to £1000. Smoking In Cars With Children Smoking in work vehicles has been illegal since 2007, when general smoking bans were brought into force. Most people will know also that from October

The End Of The Tax Disc This has been widely publicised, and Police will continue to check the tax status of a car via their national computer. However on the back of this, another crafty change has smeared in - potentially costing motorists a great deal of money! Tax can no longer be transferred Despite speed being one of the main causes of road accidents in the UK* new research by The Co-operative Insurance shows that over a third of drivers are motoring along Britain’s fastest roads, with no idea what the speed limit is. The national speed limit on a single carriageway road is 60mph. However, over a third (38%) of drivers cannot correctly say what the national speed limit is on these roads with 25% believing that it is 50mph, and a tenth believing that it is 70mph or more. Drivers’ knowledge of the speed limit on a dual carriageway, where the national speed limit is 70mph, isn’t much better. Over a third of drivers (36%) are unable to identify that this is 70mph. More than a quarter of drivers (27%) believe that it is 60mph, one in twenty (5%) believe that it is 50mph, with 2% thinking that it is 80mph or more. And when it comes to motorways, 1 in 10 (12%) drivers don’t know that the speed limit is 70mph. Younger drivers are more clued up when it comes to speed limits on single and dual carriageways (67% know the limit on single, 66% on dual) with older drivers aged 55+ knowing the least

Paper Counterpart Licence Scrapped From June, the paper driving licence has been abolished in the UK. The photocard driving licence introduced in 1998 is still valid, but all records of points and penalties will be kept online, rather than on your paper counterpart licence. Details can be accessed and shared via a unique code generated online - however motoring organisations have advised ignoring the official DVLA guidance to tear up the paper counterpart - there have been difficulties abroad hiring vehicles and explaining the new rules to foreign staff!

SPEED KNOWLEDGE BEING TESTED TO THE LIMITS

about the national speed limits on these roads than any other age group (59% know the limit on single, 62% on dual). Drivers in London seem the most baffled by speed, with motorists in the city having the least awareness of speed than in any other part of Britain. Over half (53.5%) couldn’t say what the national speed limit is on a single carriageway, 46% on a dual carriageway and 22% on a motorway. The research, by the UK’s first mainstream telematics insurer has revealed the percentages of drivers in UK regions who cannot say what national speed limits are: Region % drivers who don’t know national speed limits 1. London 40.5% 2. North West 35.1% 3. West Midlands 30.7% 4. Scotland 28.8% 5. Yorkshire 24.8% 6. East Midlands 23.9% 7. South East 23.7% 8. Wales 23.5% 9. South West 22.1% 10 East Anglia 17.7% 11. North East 17.2%

Steve Kerrigan, Head of Telematics at The Co-operative Insurance said: “These figures show that all too often drivers are getting into their cars and driving with no real awareness of the speed limits in place. “It is interesting that younger drivers – who are so often thought as being more dangerous - are so much more aware of national speed limits than older, often more experienced drivers. “The impact of not being aware of speed limits on the roads can’t be underestimated; speeds are set for a reason and driving without knowing speed can have harmful consequences to other road users and pedestrians, especially if you are travelling too fast. “Telematics policies like The Co-operative’s Young Driver insurance are designed to help new drivers improve their style by providing feedback, for example when they are driving at excessive speeds.” *http://think.direct.gov.uk/ speed.html

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF AS MAGNA HOST HUGE CLUBLAND EVENT

On 26th September History Parties will be back at Magna, Rotherham by popular demand. The first event in March saw over 3,000 people enjoying one of the best atmospheres seen in club land for many years. The worlds’ best house classics brand have been in Marbella this summer playing to sell-out crowds and are now returning home to deliver another mammoth event at Magna. Many of the artists that played in March were suitably impressed with the show, international DJ Graeme Park stated in his blog “I had the pleasure of playing to thousands of clubbers at History, Magna alongside legends like Todd Terry and Farley Jackmaster Funk. It was like stepping back in time to a 90’s rave, it was absolutely incredible”. The e-Cloud Main Arena will be headlined by international superstar David Morales and the History Classics room by the one and only Jeremy Healy. Supported by more house music legends such as Nick Hussey, K Klass, Graeme Park, Allister Whitehead, Jon Pleased Wimmin, Alison Limerick and Baby D with a further 20 DJ’s also playing. There is also a VIP room with most of the headliners from the event playing an up close and personal set for those with a VIP ticket. In the Main Room a total

of 30 tables have already been sold out and the huge VIP truck that gives views into the main stage is not to be missed. Also the e-Cloud Studio 54 Disco Room is a new addition to this show and no less than 7 DJ’s playing over the course of the night. History director Mark Mcgrail stated “The first event at Magna was a special occasion and the team here have gone one step better in attracting international artists such as David Morales and adding legends such as Alison Limerick to the show. The age range at the event was the most diverse we have seen with young and slightly older all coming together to create an electric atmosphere. The feedback from

the first event was off the scale and we are all looking forward to what will be another exceptional History event”.

You can see the last event by viewing on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ historyparties?ref=hl to see what a History event is all about. Tickets are still available and there are also limited VIP tickets an tables still free. WIN FULL WEEKEND PASSES TO THIS YEAR’S LEEDS FESTIVAL! If you have any news, reviews, releases/events you’d like us to cover please forward details to dave@mercurynewspaper.co.uk

LEEDS FESTIVAL PREVIEW By Kt Evans

EE bah gum its almost time for our favourite event on the entire summer’s calendar…the mighty Leeds Festival. Once again held at Bramham Park in Leeds, the year promises to be bigger and better than ever before with a line-up to smash its predecessors right out of the ball park. Running from 28th – 30th August, prepare for a weekend of musical mayhem with the likes of Metallica, The Libertines and Mumford & Sons all taking on headliner position. So cross your fingers and pray for sunshine as M-Live takes you on a journey through the North’s finest festival. If this year is your very first time attending the infamous Leeds Festival, we wouldn’t be lying when we said that we are totally envious of you. To experience the atmosphere of over 100,000 is something our dreams are made of, not to mention the sheer enormity of the event which twists Bramham Park into musical mecca. You’ll need plenty of strongbow, super noodles and wet wipes to get you through but will undoubtedly leave feeling in awe of what you have witnessed (aside from the raging hangover and festival flu of course…) The first time at Leeds is always a tad daunting so make

sure you catch as many bands as possible, because let’s be honest, that’s what you’re there to do right?! Friday 28th August belongs to the mighty Libertines on the main stage, however there are a host of killer bands also up for grabs. As this will be the first day of the event, it is also recommended to catch as many groups as possible (because once that hangover kicks in on day two, chances are you won’t be emerging from your tent until at least dinner time). Sheffield’s While She Sleeps on The Pit stage are guaranteed to thrust you into the spirit of things, whilst Years & Years along with Deadmau5 on the Radio 1 Stage are a certified must for anyone who wants to get into the party spirit. Once again shining light onto a genre which is peeking into the mainstream, hardcore clan Feed The Rhino have been given the challenge to open the main stage on Friday afternoon. Stemming from Kent, the group pump adrenaline and passion into each and every show they perform. A mighty proposal for even the most seasoned of professions, Feed The Rhino’s biggest show to date is certainly worth a watch. Day two…Saturday 29th August. You’ll feel like crap. There’s no point in trying to sugar coat this (please, for the love of God do not be tempted by a full English in bread cake) but one too many shandys the night before will make you want to never drink

again. But it’s ok. If there’s one thing we’ve learnt throughout our stint at British music festivals, it is to make like Hulk Hogan and fight through the pain… hair of the dog? The NME / Radio 1 stage is set up to get you right back on track with the likes of Don Broco, Knife Party and the incredible Limp Bizkit all set for performances. Django Django on the Festival Republic stage along side pop punk princes New Found Glory on the Lock Up Stage are ones certainly not to be missed, however check out the main stage and you’ll have some serious clashes to deal with…Yorkshire’s Drenge, emo kings Panic! At The Disco, Leeds festival favourites Alt J along with headliners Mumford & Sons, whoever you decide to catch, make sure you drink plenty of water…sorry Mum. Sunday. The last day. Having not washed you hair (or pits) for an unacceptable amount of time, you’ll thank God for those 99p baby wipes you reluctantly packed in your bag…because you’re going to need then. Avoid the porta loos if possible (we won’t go into why now) and get yourself stuck into the last day of the best weekend of the year. If you’re after catching one of the most hotly tipped performances of the event, make sure you check out Catfish and The Bottlemen on the NME/ Radio 1 stage. A group who have had a stonkingly successful year, we guarantee this is going to be a pretty spectacular show. Ms Dynamite on the BBC Radio 1 Extra stage will get you all riled up for a party, whilst our M-Live pick of the weekend transports us back onto the main stage for Sheffield five piece Bring Me The Horizon. A group who hold no boundaries, these alternative rockers will blow your brains out with killer hits to include “Sleep Walking,” “Chelsea Smiles” and “Drown.” We’re crossing our fingers that we get to hear new material from their upcoming studio album released on 11th September, however one thing is absolutely set in stone…come rain or shine, we guarantee you are not going to want to miss this show.

The wonderful people at Leeds Festival have kindly given us a pair of full Weekend tickets to attend this year’s Leeds Festival including camping. To be in with a chance of joining headliners The Libertines, Mumford & Sons, Metallica plus many more amazing live acts up at Bramham Park at the end of the month simply answer the following question and send your entry with a daytime telephone number to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk before noon on Thursday 13th August. Which Sheffield band headlined Sunday night at last year’s Leeds Festival? Winners drawn at random. Close: Thursday 13th August - Noon

Leeds Festival is held at Bramham Park from 28th – 30th August 2015. Tickets are available now at www.leedsfestival.com

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

I’ve done very well this week, in, fact, I’m definitely ‘Cell-abrating’. I’ve had some fabulous new Sonik Sports rods, and everything came together nicely on a visit to Cheshire venue Gawsworth Fisheries when I went to christen them. I love to target the bigger fish in Wood Pool on the complex, so arriving reasonably early, just after the gates opened at 0600, I spent an hour keeping an eye out for any clues which may indicate where I should sit. I saw a couple of decent fish roll, and noted an area of bubbles which could have been feeding fish, so set up with an island to my left, lilies to my right, and an area of open water to my immediate front; perfect! I have to tell you about my new wands (they are magical!) I chose the 3lb test curve SK3 XTR rods with a 50mm butt ring and full cork handles (drooling yet?) and opted to fish them with a 10000 series reel. I didn’t have far to cast, perhaps fifty yards at most, but with a hefty pva stick, lead, and baited rig, it was a mere flick of the wrist to send it all out onto the required spots; a good start! The rods have a progressive action, with plenty of power all the way through, but the tip is forgiving enough to play fish under the rod tips as I was soon to find out. There is extra ‘grunt’ in the butt section too, ideal for long

casts and big fish, the 50mm butt ring makes casting extra smooth, (and may even add a few yards to your longest efforts) and they are subtly finished in a matt grey cloak with matching whippings; lovely! So the baits were out. I was using Mainline Cell freezer baits, as I know that anything that resembles a pellet brings hordes of bream, and I chose to fish with double bottom baits to try and pick off the better fish. Simple rigs comprising a 2oz lead, Vardis Downfall, a coated material in mud brown to match the lake bed, and to finish, a Classic Boilie Hook; a strong, simple pattern, with the baits attached using a long hair. When I arrived, I’d spread a kilo of Cell quite loosely over a fairly big patch, topped up a margin spot with dead maggot and more Cell, then positioned two rods in open water at the edge of the dinner table, and one on the marginal spot. All lines were back leaded, and I sat down to wait as the heavens opened…. I didn’t have to wait long, a twitchy take indicated a bream, and so it proved as a slimy critter came to the net. I proceeded to land three more bream, all on the centre rod for some reason, before a screaming take denoted something with a bit more power; time to put a proper bend in the new rods! Ten minutes later, a beautifully scaled mirror glistened on the mat. It wasn’t huge, a low double, but the SK3’s had handled it superbly, allowing the fish to tire in open water before guiding it towards me with ease; no complaints! After the commotion had subsided, a few more bream slipped up, before another steady run resulted in an another chunky mirror, and things continued in much the same way for the next few hours; a couple of bream, then a carp…things were going well, especially as other anglers were struggling. A pair of carpers a couple of pegs along hadn’t had a touch, one on the far bank had caught two bream, so it looked like I’d got it right with plenty of fish in front of me. After each carp, a few pouches of Cell were fired out to keep things ticking

over, and the fish kept coming… After a few hours of rain, the skies cleared, and having caught well, I was considering packing up before the heavens opened once more. As I stood to pick up the rod, the bobbin rose and I lifted into a carp which tore off across the lake. I played it for a minute or two, then was mortified to hear my second alarm start warbling! A double take! The carp was getting close, so I risked bullying it in and netted it quickly. I picked up the second rod and realised it was another pesky bream, and it was quickly skimming towards me, when the third alarm went! A triple take! The bream was smartly unhooked in the water, and I snatched up the third rod to see what was on the other end as it seemed to have been trying to pull the rod in! I spent a minute or two trying to get the fish out of the reeds, then realised I was attached to a decent barbel! Three rods, three bites and three different species….almost all at the same time! After the fish had all been secured, and pictures quickly taken by a passing angler, they were safely returned, and I was able to finish my session. I accounted for a dozen reasonable bream, seven carp and a barbel, all of which fell to boilie tactics, and gave the new rods a good workout which they passed with flying colours. I know I’ll have to take the plastic off the cork handles soon, but they are just too nice to get dirty! Overall, a great session, and one I enjoyed immensely….

UNBEATEN BLADES LOOK A BRIGHT FORWARD TO THE KICK-OFF FUTURE United ended their pre-season campaign unbeaten following Sunday’s stalemate against Championship outfit Hull City. Jamie Murphy’s first-half goal put the Blades in front at the interval following a dominant opening 45 minutes, but substitute Abel Hernandez equalised late on for City to ensure the spoils were shared. Adkins handed Billy Sharp his third home debut, with Che Adams partnering him in attack. An open start saw a chance at both ends. Firstly Basham headed Murphy’s deep free-kick into the side netting, before Jelavic saw a shot blocked. In the 11th minute United broke at pace and nearly opened the scoring. Collins strode out of defence before playing in Adams and McGregor got down in the nick of time saving with his legs. The teenager drew another good save from the City goalkeeper, with Bruce just able to stop Sharp getting on the end of the rebound. The Blades almost broke the deadlock on three occasions in quick succession midway through the half. After being played in by Sharp, Dawson had to produce a last ditch tackle to block the advancing Scougall. From the resulting corner some indecision from McGregor saw

Robertson head off the line, before the Scottish international stopper almost palmed a Murphy effort into the path of Sharp. United finally made a dominant first-half display count a minute before the interval. MURPHY cut inside from the left and saw his effort squirm through the hands of McGregor. At the other end, Taylor fired a free-kick narrowly wide for the visitors. At half-time, Long replaced Howard in goal, whilst the visitors made four changes. Chances were at something of a premium, although Clucas and N’Doye looked live threats for City. In the 78th minute Hull levelled the game. Dixon played a ball forward in the direction of Hernandez who headed it over McFadzean before volleying home past Long. United reacted positively, with Woolford forcing a corner. From the resulting set-piece with five minutes remaining, Higdon ghosted in unmarked at the back post, only to see his header rebound off a combination of the defender and the woodwork. Moments later, the goal frame saved United at the other end after N’Doye and Hernandez combined to tee up Luer in the last meaningful action of the contest.

Owls new boy Lucas João enjoyed his first taste of Hillsborough on Saturday during the friendly victory over St Mirren. The Portuguese Under-21 striker could make his first competitive appearance this weekend as Wednesday begin the Championship term against Bristol City. Head coach Carlos Carvalhal said: “Lucas is a young, talented player and one for our future. “We need to be patient with him. If you support him and give him good energy, he will answer with very good football because he has all the attributes to be a top striker. “Lucas can help us during the season. I’m sure the fans will like him a lot. He has a brilliant future ahead of him. “He has everything for a striker, he is tall, very good at receiving the ball, strong in the air and is good with both feet. His movement is great.”

POSITIVES PLEASE EVANS Rotherham United manager Steve Evans again praised his side after another valuable workout in a 2-1 victory over Bundesliga outfit FSV Mainz 05. With the new Sky Bet Championship season just a week way, Evans watched his side notch a notable victory after goals from Matt Derbyshire and Jordan Bowery secured the win after Leon Balogun had put the German side in front. After the game Evans praised his side for the discipline and organisation in the first half and for their offensive prowess in the second 45. “It was very much like Tuesday night where we gave a first half performance which was disciplined and more about the shape rather than offensive play,” Evans remarked. “I think in the second half we had more offensive play, and we have looked at the results of the Bundesliga clubs over here, and we have teams winning at Newcastle and Stoke. We have beaten a team that is packed full with stars, so we had to work really hard, have a good

shape and discipline about our performance and I think we did. “There are lots of things to work on, the team that started won’t be the team for MK Dons, but there were a lot of plusses today and we got some more valuable minutes into them.” Evans confirmed that some members of his squad will be involved in a behind closed doors training ground match at Sunderland on Tuesday, before preparations for the season curtain raiser with MK Dons are concluded. “We will go up to Sunderland on Tuesday for a behind closed door game, and we will get minutes into those who need them,” Evans added. “Some have already ticked that box so they will have a different training programme on Tuesday with the coaching staff. We then need to pick a team the best we can that can beat MK Dons on Saturday. That will be tough as they are a team that are experiencing Championship football for the first time, and it is a club that I respect wholly with good players.”

HEAD COACH SET FOR CURTAINRAISER

season with a superb 5-0 victory over St Mirren at Hillsborough. High performances levels all over the field pleased Carvalhal, who is now looking forward to the Bristol City clash. He said: “I’m not completely happy because the coach is never completely happy but we are ready to start the Championship. “We played attractive football on Saturday. We didn’t lose the ball very easily. We moved the ball well from side to side, put in some good crosses and scored some good goals. “Our defensive organisation was good. “In our lives, we have problems but it’s about how you react. It’s about being a strong team. “Our message to the players was to show a good reaction from the Scunthorpe game. Our reaction was very good. “I’m not saying that will be the first 11 next week. Maybe yes, maybe no. “But the point is we have quality in our group.”

Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal says the Owls are ready to start their Championship campaign. Wednesday rounded off pre-

AWAY BLADES DAY OUT ON THE BEACH United’s new away kit was launched on Friday by players and manager Nigel Adkins at the Meadowhall city beach. The Adidas designed strip features a V-neck Macaw green shirt with black trim, black shorts and black socks both with a matching Macaw trim. The goalkeeper’s kit is bright red and scarlet with a sky blue trim. Players - goalkeeper George Long, Billy Sharp, Kieron Freeman, Che Adams and Louis Reed revealed the new look before hundreds of people at the specially created beach area at Meadowhall. Lisa Crossland, Sheffield United’s Head of Retail said: “It is an exciting new look for next season. We are sure the vibrant new away shirt will stand out and prove to be popular with supporters.” The shirt goes on sale from 9am on Friday 7th August. Sizes range from Mini Kits for ages 2-3 up to adult size XXXL and are priced from £35.

EASY DECISION FOR DANNY NG New signing Dany N’Guessan says he can’t wait to get stuck in to life at Doncaster Rovers, following his arrival on a twoyear contract. The former Leicester City man said it wasn’t a difficult decision for him to make and integrating won’t be a problem as he knows most of the first team squad! “I know quite a few of the lads, Richie Wellens (Leicester), Gary MacKenzie (Glasgow Rangers), Richard Chaplow and Nathan Tyson (Millwall), Cedric Evina (Charlton), Andy Williams (Swindon) and that’s about it!” N’Guessan enthused. “Its always good when you know people. Its hard if you’re a new player and don’t know anybody. “(The decision) very hard for me to be honest. I spoke to Paul (Dickov) last year and unfortunately it didn’t go the way we wanted but we spoke again and it’s happened. “I know Paul as a person as well and I wanted to make a good choice for my career and get back on track and I think I’ll do that. As a player you want to go somewhere where the manager knows you and what you can do.” N’Guessan broke free from his contract with Greek side AE Larissa to get his career “back on track” at the age of 27 and add a different dimension to the Rovers front line. “I decided to come back because everyone knows what is going on over there with the economy crisis it’s not a great place to be,” he admitted. “I know what I wanted, I wanted to break my contract – which was good – but im a family man and want to do the best for them so wanted to come back to England and get back on track. “Some people will say my pace and my ability with my two feet (is my strongest attribute), some people like me as a striker and some as a winger. I have more experience on the wing but have played more upfront lately and just want to enjoy my football. “Wherever I’m played, I’ll try to do my best – apart from goalkeeper!”
