SMOKING IN CARS TO BECOME ILLEGAL South Yorkshire Tobacco Control Collaborative is urging motorists in the region to keep their vehicles smokefree, ahead of the introduction of the new Smokefree Cars law. The legislation, which will make it illegal for anyone to smoke in a vehicle while carrying passengers under the age of 18, will come into force nationally from October 1. Drivers could face ﬁnes of £50 if they fail to observe the new law that is being introduced to help protect children and young people from the dangers of second-hand smoke. Drivers who smoke and who fail to stop a passenger from smoking in the presence of passengers under 18 risk being ﬁned twice. Stephen Horsley, Interim Director of Public Health, said: “Given we’re just weeks away from the introduction of the Smokefree Cars law, it is important that drivers in the region are aware of the changes. “It’s also vital that parents and carers understand why smoking in cars carrying children can be so dangerous. “The new legislation really is a positive move towards helping to protect children and young people from the harmful effects of tobacco. Second-hand smoke is dangerous for anyone exposed to it but children are especially vulnerable as they breathe faster than adults and have less developed airways, lungs and immune systems.” More than 80 percent of cigarette smoke is invisible and opening car windows does not remove its harmful effect. Every time children breathe in second-hand smoke, they breathe in thousands of toxic chemicals, putting them at risk of serious conditions including meningitis, cancer and respiratory infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia.* Smokers in South Yorkshire who want to quit can access lots of free help and advice at www. yorkshiresmokefree.nhs.uk.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS Shefﬁeld 50+ is planning to have an event on the Moor (the pedestrian area not the place where they shoot grouse) on Thursday 1st Oct to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons and to launch our new website which will be a one stop shop community website of all things of interest to those aged over 50 in Shefﬁeld. The website will be a user-led site; it will provide information, links to useful information sites and stories celebrating active ageing. On 1st October we want to have a celebration of all that older people are and do and we’re inviting organisations to join us. We

hope to bring buskers, possibly jugglers as well as Sheffield 50+’s ipads to introduce people to the website and to give them tasters of our ipad and smartphone training courses. If we can encourage as many different groups to get involved, with the theme of fun and celebration rather than just trying to promote our services, it should be a vibrant, entertaining event to catch the attention of all those walking past. Would you be interested in taking part too? There is a meeting at Sheffield 50+’s office on Thursday 13th October at 10.30am

TEN EASY STEPS TO SAVE FUEL Every motorist will be feeling the beneﬁt of the ongoing drop in fuel prices, but that doesn’t mean we can afford to waste unnecessary mileage when there are several simple tips to help fuel economy! Here we list ten of the easiest ways to save on your mileage!

1. Cut down on short trips Did you know that when you drive a car that has been parked for a few hours, the engine is cold and it uses much more fuel for the first five miles or so? Ideally you’d combine all your daily errands into one big trip. Often that’s not possible if you have to pop out during the day to drop off and collect the family, but try not to go out separately to do the supermarket shop or buy a newspaper. The shorter the journey, the worse your mpg will be! 2. Try to avoid rush hour traffic There are few worse places to spend your time than stuck in a traffic jam, but it’s also a very expensive way of travelling. Every time that you stop and start in traffic, your car needs first gear and a huge amount of fuel to get moving again. Second gear is not much better. The best solution is to not travel during the rush hour. You can also save some fuel by trying to understand what the traffic is doing in front of you, and travelling steadily at a slow speed, rather than accelerating and braking. If you have to travel in rush hour a lot, then you could consider buying a hybrid car, which uses much less fuel in town than a normal petrol or diesel. 3. Close the windows (and sunroof, if you’ve got one) It’s not so much of a problem when you’re driving in town (see above), but when you’re out of town or on the motorway and moving more quickly, the shape of your car is very important. Car designers call it aerodynamics and make lots of effort to reduce the ‘drag’ and make the car as sleek as possible. Anything that makes wind noise as your car goes along is actually making your car more expensive to run. You can’t do much about the design of your car, but you can avoid making it worse by not leaving the windows and sunroof open. It’s better to use the air vents for most of

the year, and the air-conditioning when it gets too hot. Even items like a “Red Nose” or an England Flag sticking out of the windows can signiﬁcantly increase fuel consumption on an average journey.

4. Remove the roof rack or ski box This is just like leaving the windows open, but worse. Even if the roof rack is empty, it increases drag and makes your car use more fuel, while a big ski box is like having another car strapped to your roof. The latest roof racks and ski boxes are quick and easy to fit and remove, so make the effort to stow them away when you’re not using them. 5. Don’t carry round unnecessary weight Just like your body, your car needs more fuel to move around more weight. So, just as you wouldn’t wear a heavy rucksack unless you had to, don’t cart stuff around in the boot of your car unless you need it. Ironically, the heavier the item (the usual culprits are golf clubs and trolleys), the less likely you are to bother taking it out of the boot and the greater the effect it will have on your fuel consumption. 6. Accelerate smoothly The perfect way to travel is at a constant speed (ideally around 50mph), and in the highest gear (five or six). So if you’re a patient driver, you’ll have lower fuel bills - it’s as simple as that. It’s unrealistic to avoid overtaking, but there’s little point accelerating past a car to simply be in front of it at the next set of lights - any instant gratification will appear on your fuel bill the next time you fill up. 7. Don’t push the accelerator down too far This one always surprises people. It’s not just to do with what gear you’re in. You may be in a high gear and travelling at a sensible speed, but if you’re pushing the accelerator down a long way to

avoid changing into a lower gear (into third from fourth, for example), then you’re actually using more fuel not less. Obviously, if your car has an automatic gearbox (you’ll know if it does), then it will probably do a better job than you of choosing which gear to be in, so it’s not a problem.

8. Turn the air-conditioning off It’s tempting to leave the air-con on the whole year round. It stops the windows misting up in the winter and you don’t ever need to think about the temperature inside the car, but it uses quite a bit of fuel, so we’d advise you turn it off when it’s not hot (on most cars the button has a snowflake symbol). 9. Stick to the speed limit If you ignored the law, you could shave a bit of time off your journey by travelling above the speed limit, particularly on long motorway trips. But, although you might arrive about 20 minutes early on a 200-mile trip by travelling at 80mph instead of 70mph, it’s also a false economy. While the car is running for 20 minutes less, it uses much more fuel when it is travelling. That 20 minutes could cost you up to £7 extra in fuel. 10. Check your tyre pressures regularly The lower the tyre pressure, the more fuel the car needs to move it down the road. We recommend that you take five minutes every fortnight to check the tyres. If you’re not sure what the pressure should be, you can normally find the figures near the lock inside the driver’s door.

URBAN WARRIOR TO ICE WARRIOR Jim McNeill, one of the world’s most experienced and respected explorers and founder of the Ice Warrior Project has chosen Joe Kenny , 53, fitness enthusiast, IT Manager, lives in Sheffield to take part in one of the most ambitious polar expeditions of our time; to be the first expedition in history to reach the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility. Defined as the furthest point from land on the Arctic Ocean and therefore its centre, the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility remains the last truly significant place in the Polar Regions, yet to be reached by mankind and is over

two hundred miles further than the Geographic North Pole. The whole journey will be near to 800 miles from the northern shores of Canada and will take-in the North Magnetic Pole on route. Having been selected for the Ice Warrior Quest for the Inaccessible Pole Joe is undergoing a comprehensive and intensive training programme to take on at least one of four 20-day legs, pushing the route across the Arctic Ocean by approximately 200 miles. Along the route team members will be gathering “crucial datasets” for the scientiﬁc community including new and

vital data about how the sea ice breaks up, making the whole endeavour a major citizen science project. Partners include the NASA funded National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) scientists, The Met Ofﬁce, The Scott Polar Institute, The Norwegian Polar Institute and the Russian Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute. This vital data will deliver the reality of climate change and make the whole expedition worthwhile and purposeful. Joe said “ I am no stranger to challenges and the cold weather, I spent 15 years in the Army with many training exercises in the Arctic circle in Norway. Since leaving the Army I keep ﬁt by taking part in two day mountain marathons and ultra marathon events and spend most weekends in the Peak District running up and down the hills . Following the huge success of the Pirates, Pants and Wellyphants exhibition this summer, The Civic will continue to provide large amounts of family fun with a range of interactive, creative and imaginative performances on a Sunday afternoon throughout their Autumn/Winter season. Helen Ball (Chief Executive) comments: “Our Family Sunday’s are a great way to introduce your little ones to the arts and theatre. As a venue, we are keen to make a trip out to The Civic a regular family activity, and so we work hard to ensure these are affordable and accessible; with shows often only lasting between 30-60 minutes.” Reeling from her recent Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2015 success, children’s theatre specialist Tessa Bide hosts the ﬁrst Family Sunday of The Civic’s Autumn/Winter season. Set in a special bell tent, Arnold's Big Adventure features beautiful shadow puppetry, wonderful original music to sing along to and plenty of thrilling surprises along the way. The story follows the journey of an acorn called Arnold on his ‘Drop Day’. The audience travels through six very different environments: Arnold’s woodland, the wind, a stream, the sea, an evil junk-monster’s lair and his new home. “I loved watching my daughter become so absorbed, and the songs were great” (Audience comment).

At the end of September Compagnie Animotion, visits Barnsley with their children’s show JoJo & Billie’s Tour de France. The French theatre company have recently celebrated 10 years of making theatre accessible to deaf audiences. Their work uses no or very little spoken language, removing boundaries between hearing and non-hearing communities as well as international audiences. JoJo & Billie’s Tour de France is a musical adventure about an English girl and a French boy who meet when their bicycles crash into each other. They then meet Albert, a wonderful bicycle inventor who takes them on an imaginative journey around each region. The show involves puppetry, bicycle choreography and percussion, music, ﬁlm, animation and French language; enabling children to learn about French music, culture, geography and weather. And ﬁnally, the worldwide phenomenon ‘Frozen’ rolls into Barnsley as part of a Sing-along-a nationwide UK tour. The Civic will host Sing-a-long-a Frozen, an interactive screening of Disney’s Frozen with lyrics

on screen to help you sing along with Elsa and Anna. The evening is introduced by a live host who will show you how to use your interactive prop bag and then just sit back and 'Let it Go'! YOU the audience can be the stars! Remember to dress up as your favourite character and be a Snow Queen for the day or Olaf the snowman, the coolest iceman ever! The massively anticipated Leeds Festival will return to Bramham park this weekend, however a last minute pull-out from pop punk clan Modern Baseball means that the lock up stage will be down one act. A huge disappointment for fans of the group, who rarely visit English shores, Modern Baseball released a statement earlier this week explaining their cancellation was due to personal reasons. Since their formation back in 2011, the four piece Baltimore pop punk princess are all about their emotive lyrics. With two studio albums under their belts, their back catalogue is an ode to growing up, trying to impress girls and desperately trying to be cool at house parties. They recently underwent a full UK tour with underground cult favourites Real Friends which saw them clinch the main headline support slot, which unquestionably went down a treat. It is therefore a huge disappointment that the group will no longer be returning to the UK to tantalise fans at the mighty Leeds and Reading festival 2015. In a statement written on their social media page which has over 50000 followers, lead vocalist

wrote: “I just wanted to thank everyone for being so understanding and supportive during this time. It is with much difficulty to announce that we unfortunately have cancelled our upcoming plans of playing Reading and Leeds as well as our upcoming Australian tour with Iron Chic.” The statement continues: “I’ve spent most of my life struggling with anxiety and depression and after the last few months, it’s evident that it’s time to put everything else aside to focus on making steps towards positive mental health. Like I said before, thank you to everyone who has been so understanding throughout all of this, the continuous support Modern Baseball and myself have received since 2011 is so amazing and I (we) could never thank you all enough.” There is a light at the end of the tunnel however as lead vocalist Bren concluded the statement with his plans for the future. “We promise to make it to the UK and Australia soon, until then keep doing what you’re doing.” Leeds Festival takes place from Friday 28th August to Sunday 30th August at Bramham Park Leeds.

Chuffing hell Leeds Festival has crept up on us pretty quickly! Here we were, this time last year, with our bags packed, food supplies bought and obscene amounts of alcohol decanted into plastic bottles (this is very very important to remember to do!!!!!) Leeds festival 2014 was frankly awesome, however we have a sneaking suspicion that 2015’s event is going to their best yet. With headliners to include Muse, Mumford and Sons and Metallica, Sheffield is once again flying its patriotic flag with Bring Me The Horizon main headliner support for Metallica. Unquestionably our pick of the entire weekend, Bring Me The Horizon are quickly becoming one of Sheffield’s finest exports. Their upcoming fifth studio album is set for release on 11th September, their most anticipated album since their 2013 record Sempiternal which flew it at number one in the official UK album charts. With hits to include Sleepwalking, Shadow Moses and Can You Feel My Heart, this release projected BMTH firmly into the mainstream. Having already released a number of tracks from their upcoming album to

include Happy Song and Throne, if the reaction from Sempiternal is anything to go by, fans across the world are in for a mighty treat. But what makes Bring Me a The Horizon our hottest pick for Leeds festival 2015? Aside from stemming from the mighty seven hills, BMTH are without a doubt one of the best live bands we have ever seen. Their Download festival 2014 performance on the main stage fuelled speculations of a main stage headliner spot whilst their 2013 Leeds and Reading showcasing created the most phenomenal mosh pit we have ever seen at a Summer festival. Lead vocalist Oli Sykes is forever the showman whilst maintaining the delivery of their gigantic repertoire which started off way back in 2008. BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS

Holidaymakers first tripped the Lights fantastic in Blackpool in 1879 when just EIGHT arc lamps bathed the Promenade in what was described as artificial sunshine… The principle is still much the same today. But the sheer scale, style and professionalism of today’s fantastic free show reveals just how much Blackpool’s Illuminations has developed as one of the iconic annual British events. Gone are the days when the lights went out as the tide came in because water leaked into the cast iron wiring pipes on the seafront! In May 1912, lights were erected on Princess Parade to mark Blackpool’s first royal visit – Princess Louise officially opened this new section of Promenade. They were so impressive that the council staged them again in September and thousands of people visited the resort and the commercial potential was tapped the following autumn. The First World War called a temporary halt to the display in 1914, but by 1925 the Lights were back with giant animated tableaux being added and extending the Blackpool Illuminations to almost six miles from Squires Gate to Red Bank Road. The Illuminations were halted again when the Second World War broke out and did not come on again until 1949 when Anna Neagle pressed the switch. More than 3.5 million visitors flocked to Blackpool to see the Illuminations last year. An army of staff including artists, electricians, joiners, mechanics, painters and engineers work throughout the year to ensure the display is ready for the big switch-on. Altogether 65,000 staff hours are used on maintenance, preparation, erection, operation and – when it is all over – dismantling the

feature, ﬁxtures and ﬁttings. The Lights’ cable and wiring stretches more than 74 miles (120km) and there are more than 400,000 lamps of various types and styles. Electricity consumption has been reduced by nearly half in recent years with the introduction of the latest technology low-voltage neon, lamps and micro processor controls. Top designer and television personality Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has been drafted in to the Illuminations team and created its acclaimed “Decodance” and “Venus Reborn” features.

I’ve blanked this week, so rather than bore you with ‘I tried this, I did that,” instead I’ll briefly review the venue, which was, in truth, magnificent! The intention for this week’s scribblings was to regale you, dear reader, with tales of huge catfish, and my skills in landing such behemoths, however, as stated, I didn’t fare well, losing two fish and landing none. Hardly the basis for a blog or story, but as I sat on the bank and looked about me, (I had plenty of time) I suddenly realised that I was perhaps lucky enough to sit on one of the most beautiful fisheries I’ve ever been fortunate enough to visit. Finding a cat fishery which offers good sport and an above average chance of catching the intended quarry isn’t that hard, but finding one which specialises in such fish is a little more difficult. Fox Lakemore Fishery in Cheshire is just such a venue, and one I’ve been hoping to visit for a long time, so when a slot became available, I was in there as fast as possible, hoping to take advantage of apparently perfect conditions of warm winds, low pressure and forecast drizzle… but what makes it so special? Arriving at change over time, (Lakemore operates a 24 hour ticket system, 0700-1900) I drove into the extensive car park and turned off the engine. Nothing; just perfect peacefulness. An odd bird chirruped in the trees, a solitary car passed the gates, but the overriding sound was of the wind gently swaying huge willow trees which dripped into the waters of the lakes. No shouty anglers, no transport noise, no music, nothing to disturb the tranquillity of the morning as I started to unload the van… a perfect start. There are four fishable lakes at Lakemore, Horseshoe Lake is perhaps considered the Jewel in the Crown, an irregularly shaped lake, packed with deeply shadowed, lily encrusted bays, reed lined,

and surrounded by those magnificent willow trees which kissed the water almost everywhere I looked. There is much to find beneath the surface too, with cats approaching 75lb and carp to well over 30lb all waiting to lead a merry dance below the pale green water. It’s as close to angling perfection as I’ve ever seen; if you had a checklist of things required to make the ultimate fishery, I would suggest you start right here… Long Lake (where I fished) is, as the name suggests, a long lake. Dominated by a pair of central islands, again, this water is hemmed by reeds so thick that you can only see the water from the thirteen pegs cut into the foliage. I watched the cobalt flash of kingfishers skim down the lake, saw mottled black cat fish tails slap the water as they turned over baited patches, and witnessed carp aplenty patrolling the margins; in fact, everywhere I looked, there was something new to notice. Within this lake, the cats run to over 50lb, the carp to almost 30lb, so again, a chance of a real lump from the depths. The two lakes above are without doubt the stars of the show, and the main reason that the fishery is extensively booked by anglers keen to land their first cat, or improve on a personal best, but there are other waters which also fit the ‘idyllic’ adjective equally well. Both Willow and Golden lakes are of a similar gorgeous ilk, if somewhat smaller, with a smaller stamp of fish. Each offers anglers a peaceful day of quality sport set in the bounds of stunning surroundings, both with the potential to provide a real surprise. Don’t be fooled into thinking that these waters contain tiddlers; they do not, but do offer a chance of decent ‘bonus’ fish to brighten any day. It would be impossible to convey with words just how damn nice this fishery is. Facilities are good too, with toilet, wash basins and fresh water, a huge (discreet) skip for any anglers rubbish, fantastic scenery, a great bailiff team who are rarely without a bag for anything which needs to be removed or discarded, an effective booking system to keep things ticking over efficiently, CCTV covering the car park for peace of mind and much, much more… Lakemore should be on your bucket list of places to visit whether you are a serious specimen angler, or a fisherman who appreciates the beauty of his surroundings….. Week two in the County Senior League brought 17 fixtures and the last weekend games off the month. Premier Division Millmoor Juniors’ Scott Hartley followed up last weeks’ double with a hat-trick this time out. Hartley’s treble and a Michael Clarke strike helped Millmoor to a 4-1 home win over Houghton Main. The win takes Millmoor to the top of the embryonic table. Last years’ league winners Swinton Athletic set-out their stall, with an emphatic 5-0 win over Jubilee Sports at Chaucer School. Curtis Wilkinson, Joshua Dacre (2), Markus Clare (2) made-up the score-sheet for the defending champions. A Phillip Roberts hat-trick inspired Wickersley to an exciting 4-3 win over North Gawber Colliery at Wickersley Sports College. Thorpe Hesley started life in the Premier Division, with a 1-1 draw away against 2013/14 league winners Handsworth Parramore Reserves. Elsewhere, Frecheville opened their season with a 2-0 win against Swallownest FC at Swallownest Miners Welfare. Division One Denaby United sit atop the early Division One table, after their second win in as many games. This time out they were 4-0 winners at home to fellow promoted Byron House. Wombwell Main are also adjusting well to life in Division One, after relegation last season. Wombwell saw-off Sheffield Bankers 4-2 at Hillsborough College to make it two wins from two played. South Kirkby Colliery have six points from their opening two games, after they beat Ecclesfield 6-3 in a basketball match of game at Chaucer School. AFC Dronfield bounced back quickly from last weeks’ defeat to Caribbean Sports, by beating Millmoor Juniors 9-3 at Gosforth Playing Field. Silkstone United were beaten comfortably 4-0 last week by Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915, but were on the right-side of the score-line this week, as they beat High Green Villa 3-1 at Ferrars Road.

TWO AWAY GOALS NOT ENOUGH FOR MILLERS SECOND-half strikes from Jonson Clarke-Harris and Tom Thorpe proved in vain as Rotherham United fell to defeat against Queens Park Rangers despite a spirited display in the capital. Tjaronn Chery’s strikes either side of the interval put Chris Ramsey’s men in charge and Charlie Austin seemed to put the game beyond the Millers with a third just after the hour mark. However, Clarke-Harris’s well-taken strike gave the Millers’ hope of a fightback and sub Tom Thorpe gave the Millers genuine hope of a share of the spoils with a second with three minutes remaining before Austin added a second soon after to take the game away from the Millers. Following their goalless draw with Preston North End in midweek, Millers chief Steve Evans made three changes to his starting line-up for the trip to Loftus Road. Argentine playmaker Emmanuel Ledesma and Tottenham loanee Grant Ward were given chances to impress in the Millers’ engine room as Joe Mattock was ruled out because of a knock sustained against the Lancastrians while Joe Newell was asked to fill in at left-back. Clarke-Harris was rewarded for his cameo in midweek by being granted his first start of the season as Chris Maguire had to settle for a substitutes’ berth while Jordan Bowery was not named amongst the Millers’ squad. The home side were quick out of the blocks and Chery floated a corner into the danger area where Matt Phillips rose highest but his glancing header failed to trouble the target. Moments later, Austin tried his luck from distance but his effort blazed over the bar before Newell’s eye-catching pass released Matt Derbyshire but his crosscum-shot was blocked by Grant Hall at the other end.

The duo combined moments later as Newell showed fleet of foot to skip past Chery with ease to give Derbyshire a glimpse of goal and the ex-Forest stung the palms of England ‘keeper Rob Green with a snap effort. Moments later, Greg Halford’s exocet throw was flicked on by Lewis Buxton into the path of Ledesma, who stuck out a leg to direct the ball towards goal but Green was well-stationed to snuff out the danger. The Millers had their hearts in their mouths when Alejandro Faurlin’s sliderule pass seemed to release Chery but Kelle Roos was quick off his line to palm the ball away but with Chery tumbling under his challenge, referee Dean Whitehouse waved away home protests before Nedum Onuoha got on the end of Chery’s resulting corner but he could only volley over from an acute angle. At the other end, Grant Ward showed great tenacity to win possession paving the way for Ledesma to give Derbyshire a sight of goal but his shot on the turn lacked power as Green smothered with ease. Just before the half-hour, Austin had another speculative effort from long range which flew harmlessly wide of the target before the Millers came within a whisker of the opener when a threaded pass saw Clarke-Harris get on the wrong side of his marker to advance menacingly into the box before playing a tantalising centre which saw Derbyshire stretch out a leg to turn the ball home but he failed to make a proper connection as the ball agonisingly screwed wide of the target. Minutes later, Phillips flashed a dangerous cross which saw Hall flick on invitingly into the path of Austin, who poked the ball goalwards but Roos was on his toes to turn the ball around the post. With half-time approaching, the hosts

took the game by the scruff of the neck when a sweeping pass released James Perch on the right, who despite the attentions of Ledesma, fired an incisive cross which was perfectly controlled by Austin on the edge of the box presenting Chery, with the opportunity to curl a delightful left-footed effort which gave Roos no chance as it arrowed into the corner of the goal. The Millers responded superbly to the setback and Lee Frecklington sneaked behind the Rangers rearguard to fire a cross which was deflected goalwards by Hall but Green showed good agility to palm the ball to safety despite being initially wrongfooted. Following the restart, the home side took a firm grip on the game when they doubled their lead five minutes into the half with their first foray of note. Austin’s deft flick released Massimo Luongo down the right flank, who burst into the box, before playing a timely pullback which took Roos and the Rotherham rearguard out of the game and Chery was rewarded for his timely run into the box as he slid the ball into the unguarded net. Moments later, Rotherham missed a giltedged chance to halve the deficit when Newell skipped to the byline to deliver a tantalising centre which saw ClarkeHarris ghost away from his marker but with the goal at his mercy, his downward header fizzed past the far post with Green a helpless bystander. In their next attack, Clarke-Harris showed great poise to play a delicate reverse pass which put Derbyshire in the clear but although he skied his effort over with Green approaching, his blushes were spared by the offside flag. Just past the hour mark, Austin became the first to see yellow for clipping Grant Ward as he looked to clear but the in demand striker went from villain to hero as he netted Rangers’ third moments later.

BAD DAY AT VALE FOR ROVERS Doncaster Rovers suffered a 3-0 defeat at Vale Park for the second season in succession thanks to goals from Sam Foley, Byron Moore and former Rovers loan man Uche Ikpeazu. Doncaster had goalkeeper Thorsten Stuckmann to thank, whom without Rovers could have found themselves on the back of a far heavier score-line, but for a string of impressive saves from the German. Richard Chaplow returned to Paul Dickov’s starting line-up in place of Harry Forrester who picked up a knock in the midweek draw against Southend United, with Forrester not included in the match day squad.

The home side made the brightest start and had early chances through Louis Dodds and Ikpeazu, without getting a shot on target. Stuckmann was called into action in the 11th minute when the home side were awarded a penalty. Enoch Andoh was tripped in the area by Chaplow and the referee had no hesitation in pointing for the spot. Foley stepped up to take the spot kick, however Stuckmann made a ﬁne save to his right to keep the scores level. Dodds looked set to give the home side the lead soon after though, his shot was heading for the back of the net, but Stuckmann saved brilliantly to deny the Port

Vale forward. In the 24th minute Stuckmann pulled off another wonder save to again deny Dodds. The Vale strikers looping header was going straight into the top right hand corner, but Stuckmann at full stretch somehow managed to tip the ball around the post for a corner. The troublesome Ikpeazu won Port Vale a free-kick 20 yards from goal, which Vale captain Carl Dickinson took and was struck superbly, but once again the Rovers goalkeeper would not be beaten, making another super save to keep the scores at 0-0. Stuckmann was ﬁnally beaten in the 34th minute, Dickinson’s cross to the far post

Doncaster their first defeat of the season. “We were poor and sluggish from start to finish,” said Dickov. “You have to give Port Vale credit because they came firing out the blocks and caused problems all game. “We didn’t deal with it well enough and we talked about it in pre-season and in the games we’ve already played this season about being resolute and not conceding but we defended as individuals which is something we hadn’t done up until this point.” Dickov has called for improvement from his side and they will have chance to turn things around when Ipswich visit in the

League Cup on Tuesday night. “As units, from the back four to the middle four, we didn’t defend as a team and if you don’t do that then you’re going to concede,” bemoaned Dickov. “To give yourself a chance in games going forward - then you have to defend properly.”

Frecklington fought hard to win possession on halfway before driving hard at the Rangers backline and with the home defence pushing up, Clarke-Harris managed to beat the offside trap and although the move looked to lose momentum as he cut inside, the ex-Oldham striker

curled a delightful effort which beat the outstretched hand of Green to nestle in the bottom corner of the goal. The Millers were buoyed by the strike and Derbyshire volleyed wide from the edge of the box before Phillips ghosted in from the flank before firing a rasping effort which stung the palms of Roos, who managed to punch the ball to safety, at the other end. With time running out for the visitors, Maguire became the latest to incur the wrath of the referee as he was cautioned for hauling over Michael Doughty before the Millers had genuine hope of a comeback as they reduced the deficit further with three minutes remaining. Newell swung another delightful corner which seemed to get a touch from Derbyshire and the ball fell invitingly into the path of Thorpe, who kept his composure to fire into the roof of the home net. However, Rotherham’s joy proved shortlived as QPR sealed the deal in the dying minutes when sub Sebastian Polter was tripped by Maguire in the box and referee Dean Whitehouse had no hesitation in pointing to the spot paving the way for Austin to wrongfoot Roos from 12 yards to dash Millers’ hopes.

of the box, he had Stuckmann beaten, but also the cross bar. In the 72nd minute Ikpeazu who was a constant pain for the Rovers back four, weaved past two defenders before firing at goal, but he was again unable to find the target. Rovers had a great chance to pull a goal back through Williams, substitute Main fired from the edge of the box, his effort was parried into the path of the summer signing from Swindon Town, but he could only fire over from 12 yards. Colin Daniel had a good chance for the hosts, before Vale sealed the victory in the 89th minute. Ben Purkiss put a fine low ball into the box, which was finished fantastically on the spin by Byron Moore, to ensure more Rovers misery at Vale Park.

BLADES NEWS2015/16 BANDWAGON KEEPS ROLLING United made it three consecutive Sky Bet League One victories thanks to two second half goals. Blackpool were resolute in the first half but Billy Sharp’s first since returning and another from Marc McNulty maintained Nigel Adkins’ unbeaten home start. Adkins was forced into two changes following the midweek success over Peterborough. Collins (calf) and Scougall (ankle) missed out through injury so Kieran Wallace and CampbellRyce both recorded their first league starts of the campaign and it was quickly apparent that skipper McEveley had shifted back into a central defensive role. United had plenty of early possession but the Blackpool back four were untroubled and goalkeeper Letheren did not touch the ball in the opening ten minutes. The visitors won the game’s first corner and registered first serious shot, although off target, which was a 19thminute 40-yard halfvolley from McAlister and worried Howard

enough into a fulllength dive. Basham headed over a corner and Sammon could not generate power on a shot on the turn, whilst from a free-kick Robertson headed straight at Howard on 34 minutes. The best and last chance of the half arrived on 42 minutes and came from United. Baxter’s weighted pass put Wallace around the back of the defence and from his pull-back, Sammon’s side-foot effort was on target until being deﬂected just over the crossbar. There was a scare for the Blades early in the second half. Basham was booked for foul on Potts and from the resulting free-kick, Ferguson curled against Howard’s left post. On 54 minutes Freeman played through to Adams but instead of shooting he laid off to Sharp, who was crowded out and soon after there was another golden opportunity. Campbell-Ryce beat three on the right ﬂank and his low cross found Sammon, unmarked in the middle of the goal, but he could only direct the ball wide from

inside the six-yard box. Adkins made a double change before the hour and the opening goal soon after. McEverley delivered a low corner, Basham made space in the box and SHARP’s shot squirmed under the body of goalkeeper Letheren. McEveley made an important block from Potts as Blackpool looked for a leveller before another of the home substitutes made an impact on 72 minutes. A ball down the left channel saw Sharp lay inside for McNULTY to take a steadying touch before drilling into the bottom corner of Letheren’s net, at the Kop end. Woolford tried his luck from range but Letheren gathered at the second attempt as the encounter entered the ﬁnal 15 minutes, whilst a run from McEveley almost made a chance for McNulty. In the last ﬁve minutes, Howard turned a long-range Potts shot around a post as Blackpool looked for a route back into the contest but the Blades stayed in control for the remaining minutes - plus four added - to register three more valuable points.

Billy Sharp’s first goal since his summer move from Leeds United got the Blades up and running after a frustrating opening 45 minutes, before Sharp went from scorer to provider as substitute Marc McNulty netted a well taken second to help the hosts run out comfortable winners in the end. But speaking afterwards, Adkins acknowledged his side must continue to improve, he remarked: “I have highlighted since day one, there will be no easy games in this division and give Blackpool some credit them came he organised, determined and resolute and made life difficult for us. They sat back and allowed us the ball, looking to hit us on the counter attack, but we have to move the ball a lot quicker in those situations. after good work from Billy.” Adkins concluded by praising the home support and the application of his players, in energy sapping conditions at Bramall Lane, adding: “Goals change the complexion of games and if we score ﬁrst we will be difﬁcult to beat, especially at home. Credit to the supporters too, they were patient and stuck with us. I want us to play at a much quicker tempo, but we are building some momentum and the conditions were draining, it was like a testimonial at the end, but the schedule is relentless and we go again on Tuesday at Fulham.”

CHE EXTENDS LANE DEAL Teenager Che Adams has committed his long-term future to the Club, by agreeing a new contract. The 19-year-old, who has enjoyed a terriﬁc start to his ﬁrst full season as a professional, has penned a deal until the end of the 2017-18 season, with the option of a further year. “Che is an emerging talent, he has so much ability,” said United boss Nigel Adkins. We are excited to have him at our disposal and his form, attitude and application throughout pre-season and into the league season has been fantastic. Like all the players, we must manage him correctly and try to improve him.” Adams, who joined the Blades from Ilkeston FC for an undisclosed fee in November 2014, caught the eye last term with a number

of impressive cameo displays, culminating in him scoring a brace against Tottenham Hotspur in the secondleg of the Capital One Cup semi-final at Bramall Lane in January. And after a profitable pre-season under Adkins, which saw Adams net four times, the Blades boss has named the youngster in his starting XI for all four Sky Bet League One fixtures to date, with

the Leicester-born prospect bagging a match-winning brace against Chesterﬁeld earlier this month. Adkins added: “Che works hard and everyday he is learning more about his game and what we want him to contribute to the team. He is exciting to watch, the fans have taken to him and he certainly adds another dimension to our array of attacking threats.”

OWLS NEWS2015/16 MATIAS WONDER STRIKE THE BEST ONE YET NOT ENOUGH FOR OWLS The Owls posted a creditable point at Yorkshire rivals Leeds on Saturday in the lunchtime kick-off at Elland Road. A thoroughly entertaining encounter saw Wednesday draw first blood with a Marco Matias first half stunner only to be pegged back by Chris Wood after the break. And all things being equal, a draw was probably the right result as both sides were good for a share of the spoils. Having made six changes from the low key 1-1 draw with Reading at Hillsborough in midweek, Carlos Carvalhal was clearly seeking a positive response. And the Owls’ head coach certainly saw that in the early exchanges as his team looked sharp and lively and more than matched the threat from Leeds. Matias and Sam Hutchinson both had long range efforts to test the water, although most of the first half possession unfolded in the midfield areas in typical derby fashion. Mirco Antenucci sent a snapshot from distance narrowly wide for the Whites, whose new

signing Wood was denied by a last-ditch challenge from Rhoys Wiggins. Then the contest really opened up on 36 minutes as Wednesday went into the lead – and what a strike it was. Little seemed on for Matias when he took a Liam Palmer feed into his stride 20 yards out on the angle but the Portuguese calmly flicked the ball over his marker and hit a stunning volley that flew in off the underside of the crossbar. Leeds responded with Wood a whisker away from converting an Atenucci cross but the Owls held firm, heading into half time with their advantage intact. The home side started the second half with greater intent with waves of pressure, to which

Wednesday succumbed just past the hour. Stuart Dallas jinked his way into the box and sent in a perfect low cross that left Wood with the simple task of converting from close range. The goal gave the Owls a jolt and Liam Palmer was upfield to head into the arms of Marco Silvestri from a quick counter before play went straight to the other end where Wood went close with a firm header. The contest remained in the balance but to the credit of Leeds and Wednesday, there was no contentment with a point. Both pressed to the last in pursuit of a winner but neither could find that extra something in the final third and honours proved even.

Owls forward Marco Matias said he is confident more goals will come after scoring with a spectacular strike against Leeds on Saturday. Matias’ control in the box was immaculate, flicking the ball over his marker before beating Leeds goalkeeper Marco Silvestri all ends up with a stunning volley. In fact, the Portuguese ace says it’s up there with the best of his career and is now intent on adding more to help the team. With the help of team mate and translator Jose Semedo, he said: “I’m really happy to score this amazing goal, my first for the club and I’m happy to help the team. “We kept the point and I hope to get more and

more goals as the season goes on. “I have scored a lot of goals in my career and I scored one last year similar to this but this one is the best one I have scored. “I knew my ﬁrst goal was coming. I am hoping to help the team as much as I can by scoring these goals.” Matias has featured in all three of the Owls’

Championship ﬁxtures and is happy with his progress so far in England. He added: “My adaptation to the championship has been good, we have a good squad of players and coaching staff, who have helped me a lot. “The goals will come naturally for me like they did last year and in the past and it will help the team.”

THE BEST ONE YET A point apiece was a fair result, said Carlos Carvalhal following the 1-1 draw with Leeds at Elland Road on Saturday. The Owls gave a thoroughly good account of themselves in the Yorkshire derby and came away with an even share of the spoils, which was acknowledged by the head coach: “We played a good game today, we controlled a lot of it but Leeds can say similar so I think a draw is the right result. “I am very pleased with the answers of the players after the game on Wednesday because I needed to see that. “I made a lot of changes to the team and that
