DONCASTER BECOMES THE SURPRISE STAR OF LOUIS TOMLINSON’S LATEST MUSIC VIDEO It sounds like Louis Tomlinson has appointed himself the head of Doncaster’s international tourist board.
Doncaster becomes the surprise star of Louis Tomlinson’s latest music video Louis Tomlinson and Bebe Rexha The 25-year-old One
Direction heartthrob has made his home town the star of the music video for his latest song, Back To You. And it sounds like Louis wants
everyone to discover how fantastic Doncaster is. “I love it. I feel like I owe people from Doncaster. But I just get this feeling… I want to push Doncaster on everyone,” the singer told The Sun. The video shows Louis and American pop sensation Bebe Rexha walking through the backstreets of the town and singing on the pitch of
Doncaster Rovers Football Club. Louis spends time in Los Angeles where his one-year-old son Freddie lives with his ex-girlfriend Briana Jungwirth - but he says Doncaster will always be his favourite place to be. “LA’s very different to Doncaster. The people are chalk and cheese,” the singer says. “I obviously cherish my time with my son and it’s fantastic for
his debut solo album - his first since One Direction went on hiatus in 2016. He previously released a
work and the weather is great, but I do cherish my time back home,” he added. Louis is currently gearing up to release
collaboration with DJ and producer Steve Aoki in 2016 called Just Hold On - which reached number 2 in the UK charts.

£18M INVESTMENT SPEEDS UP SHEFFIELD BUSES A £18.3 million investment to speed up Sheffield bus routes and cut congestion has seen some city journey times slashed by up to 25 per cent. Highway improvements on key bus routes – including smarter signal controls, new bus lanes, junction upgrades, road widening and more cameras to better monitor the flow of traffic – in the city centre, north Sheffield, Gleadless, Meadowhead and on Penistone Road have also seen bus punctuality improvements of up to three per cent.
The work, designed to give buses priority and improve traffic management across Sheffield’s 187 bus routes, is part of the UK’s first designated ‘Better Bus Area’ scheme, delivered by Sheffield Bus Partnership since 2013 and funded by the Department for Transport. Benefitting up to 55 million passengers a year, it combines money previously paid directly to bus operators with a Government grant, allowing the Partnership – made up of South Yorkshire Passenger
Transport Executive (SYPTE), Sheffield City Council and local bus companies – to work together to improve bus journey times to provide regular and reliable services. SYPTE Director of Public Transport, Ben Gilligan, said: “Buses are a vital public service and an effective bus network is an essential part of a vibrant economy – linking people to jobs, education, shops and leisure. Through the Better Bus Area scheme, Sheffield Bus Partnership is helping transport to
move more efficiently on key city corridors, and in turn improving bus satisfaction and increasing passenger numbers to reduce carbon emissions and congestion for everyone.” Co-location of bus operator and Council staff at the city’s Urban Traffic Control Centre, a move made possible through the scheme, also means information sharing and the ability to minimise disruption caused by road incidents is greatly improved. Matt Davies, Managing Director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, added: “We
welcome these results and are really pleased to see investment and improvements are helping to deliver benefits for passengers and contributing to a more efficient and attractive city transport network. “However, improvements in journey time can easily be offset by increasing traffic levels and congestion which means that we must continue to keep up the momentum. Focusing on improving bus journey times is now even more essential than ever.”

FOOTBALL’S FUTURE STARS ARRIVE TO SECURE THEIR PLACE IN THE GAME’S HISTORY Nearly 900 players from some of the biggest football clubs on the planet arrive in Sheffield in a few days time with one aim - securing their place in the game’s history. The success of the Youdan Trophy – which is now attracting topflight clubs from as far away as Japan and South Africa – has even taken the organisers by surprise. The tournament was started just three years ago as a way of providing up-and-coming referees with top level match experience – there were just eight teams competing at the inaugural event. When Youdan Trophy 2017 kicks off on Monday, July 31st there will be 40 teams battling it out for their place in footballing history. Clubs from Manchester United to Houston Dynamo, Newcastle United to FC Basel and Everton to Kawaski Frontale are lining up against opposition from as far afield as Iran and United Arab Emirates in an event which will also feature teams from both of Sheffield’s clubs, Wednesday and United. The winning clubs get to become part of footballing legend – the Youdan Trophy takes its name from the man behind the game’s first interclub tournament that was played just once at Bramall Lane in 1867. The Football Challenge Cup was sponsored by legendary local entrepreneur Thomas Youdan and won by Hallam FC. Youdan Trophy organisers YouAre-The-Ref.com believe it’s Sheffield position as the city that invented the game that makes the tournament such a massive draw for foreign teams. Youdan Trophy’s Keith Hackett said: “These teams have the pick of tournaments anywhere on the planet but they increasingly
choose the Youdan Trophy here in Sheffield – it’s a great honour to know we’re becoming the place to see the game’s stars of the future.” The Youdan Trophy is a unique showcase of the game’s very best new talent via its under 16s and under 14s competition. 14-year-old ‘wonder kid’, Karamoko Dembélé, of Celtic – who is tipped for greatness – returns for the third year. He was spotted and awarded ‘player of the tournament’ in the inaugural year of the Youdan Trophy. Top class refereeing is still very much part of the tournament. Mark Clattenburg – whose last major game was overseeing the UEFA Euro 2016 final – is the referee for the under 16s Youdan Trophy final. Youdan Trophy organisers, Sheffield-based You-Are-TheRef.com, are the world's leading independent authority and education platform for match officials. Youdan Trophy 2017 is staged in Sheffield from Monday, July 31st until Friday, August 4th. U16 Group games will take place at Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park whilst U14 Group games will take place at the
Warminster Road facility of the University of Sheffield. Spectators are welcome at all games. Day tickets can be purchased each day on the door of each venue for just £3. A weekly ticket can be purchased online at www.youdantrophy.com giving access to the full five days of football for just £12. This summer will also see the inaugural Youdan Trophy Development tournament taking place from Friday, August 18th to Monday, August 21st. It is open to all U12 (9V9) or U15 (11v11) clubs. More details: youdantrophy. com/development-2017/ You can also follow the Youdan Trophy on Twitter (@ YoudanTrophy), Instagram (@ YoudanTrophy) and Facebook (@ YoudanTrophy). The ‘not for profit’ Youdan Trophy recently launched a ‘Just Giving’ page to help fund its future development. Charity tractor up and running again thanks to Streets Ahead
Heeley City Farm now has a fully renovated tractor thanks to a dedicated team of Streets Ahead mechanics. After breaking down a couple of years ago, the charity has been unable to carry out daily activities using the tractor, such as moving manure. Instead, these tasks have had to be carried out manually, requiring increased staff time and costs. In a bid to get the tractor up and running again, Steve Needham, Fleet Compliance Manager at Streets Ahead, offered to get the tractor fully inspected by Streets Ahead qualified mechanics to identify what the problems were. Streets Ahead staff, who are Amey employees, are entitled
to take one paid day every year to work on a charity project in the local community. A team of Streets Ahead mechanics volunteered their expertise and Community Involvement Days to get the tractor back on the road. The renovation work took two months and required specialist parts which were generously donated by Streets Ahead suppliers, Le Pla Hydraulics and A Plant. John Le Corney, Heeley City Farm Chief Executive, said: “We’re hugely grateful to Streets Ahead for renovating and overhauling our tractor. It is wonderful to have a fully working and safe tractor which can be used once again for the benefit of the farm.”
Steve Needham, Streets Ahead Fleet Compliance Manager said: “We were delighted to help Heeley City Farm get their tractor working. Heeley City Farm is a great local charity and we are proud to have offered our support by using our skills and expertise. Everyone in the team who helped restore the tractor really enjoyed the work. Our thanks also go out to our suppliers La Pla and A plant for kindly donating specialist parts that were needed to restore the vehicle.” To find out more about the Streets Ahead contract visit: www.sheffield.gov.uk/streetsahead

Martin Harris and Jayne Nicholson, a Yorkshire based couple, have recently relocated their Blacksmith’s business to the National Coal Mining Museum. Based in the Blacksmith’s Forge on the museum’s Hope Pit site, Martin and Jayne will aim to showcase traditional crafts, as well as producing a range of hand forged items to be sold in the Museum shop. They will also be carrying out important conservation work on the Museum’s collection and running demonstrations for visitors. Visitors to the Museum over the Summer can visit the Forge at Hope Pit from Wednesday to Sunday. Martin has over 25 years experience as a Blacksmith, traditionally taught, serving a 7 year apprenticeship at a Victorian working museum. He is able to work in differing styles from traditional to contemporary on both functional and decorative pieces. Martin says “I started my working life as a litter picker at the Victorian working museum until a blacksmith noticed my genuine interest in the Blacksmith’s work and on one occasion the blacksmith asked me if I would like to have a go. I spent a full day with the blacksmith which I enjoyed very much as I had wanted to study metal work at school but was not given the chance. About a week later the blacksmith approached me to ask if I would be interested in becoming an apprentice blacksmith. I couldn’t believe I had been given this opportunity so I jumped at the chance” Martin has approximately 10 years’ experience as a conservation blacksmith working for
one of the largest conservation companies in Europe. However, he gave up this role to move to Yorkshire so he could be with Jayne, as prior to this they were living 150 miles apart only seeing each other at weekends. With Martin's experience being so specialized, it was known that it would be difficult to find work, and they had both dreamed of creating their own business together, and believed it was time. Jayne says “When I was at school I was very much into woodwork and metalwork. I was the only female in the class however when I left school I was unable to secure an apprenticeship and I was not taken serious be I am a female so when the opportunity presented itself I grasped it with both hands leaving the security of a well-paid job and swapping a desk for an anvil. I know many people thought I was mad but I believe that fortune favours the brave and that the only person standing in the way of achieving our goals is our self.” Going forward, Martin and Jayne will also be running ‘Be a Blacksmith for the Day’ experiences which will give the public the chance of a hands on blacksmith’s experience to remember.

PETER HAIGH & SONS BRING A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE TO ECCLESFIELD AND THE SHEFFIELD REGION A recently opened business based in Ecclesfield serving the Sheffield and the South Yorkshire Area. The business is owned and operated by Peter Haigh, who is a qualified Funeral Director having over twenty years experience in funerals working for local well-established businesses. Until recently Peter was the Manager of a local funeral director but wanted to offer a unique personal service from an Independent family funeral business with affordable and simplified funeral pricing and choice for clients. Peter says "I feel there is a lot of confusion around what the actual cost of a funeral is so decided I will offer 'all inclusive' packages given a set price" This includes the Funeral Directors services, coffin, hearse and ALL disbursements. This means the client knows exactly what the overall costs are and are not shocked when
suddenly extra fees are added for disbursements! Given ever increasing funeral costs it makes sense to plan ahead and many people are now realising the benefit of having a pre-paid funeral plan. Not only does this offer peace of mind on a financial level but for the family left dealing with bereavement you can leave your personal instructions on what type of funeral you want. This can include Religious services, Hymns, Music etc and takes pressure and worry off your loved ones at the time of bereavement. Peter Haigh & Sons offer PrePaid Funeral Plans and will be happy to explain them to you further, either in their office, or at your home. If you have an existing pre-paid plan it may be you want to nominate them as your preferred Funeral Directors for future. if you require any help please contact them. Their plans can be paid by instalments and are one of the
most competitively priced plans on the market. Peter is Sheffield born and bred, he knows the local area, he knows local people and his experience and local knowledge help to make him the funeral director of choice. Peter Haigh & Sons 99 Cross Hill, Ecclesfield, Sheffield S35 9WR Tel: 0114 245 7913

SHEFFIELD FAMILY PREPARE ROCK CLIMB FOR PROSTATE CANCER UK
to see that Andy has decided to undertake this challenge to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK and raise awareness of this deadly disease. “Currently one man an hour dies from prostate cancer in the UK. That’s 11,000 men a year. Based on current trends, by 2030 prostate cancer is predicted to be the most common cancer overall. Whether you are doing a local walk or an epic challenge, you’ll be helping us push for real change, from more effective testing to better treatments.”
Andy Cockayne, 50, and his family from Sheffield are preparing to hike to the summit of the Ifach Rock in Calpe, Spain to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK and awareness of the disease. Andy is hoping to raise over £1,000 by hiking up the 332 metre rock on Friday 28th July 2017. Andy was inspired to take on the challenge for Prostate Cancer UK after being diagnosed in April 2016. He said: “In April 2016 my life was rocked by the news that I had prostate cancer. After surgery and a course of radiotherapy, I feel confident that I am on the road to recovery and have decided to take on the Ifach Rock with my family for Prostate Cancer UK. “I am really looking forward to the climb and I’m delighted to be raising awareness and money to help stop prostate cancer being a killer.” James Beeby, Director of Fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “It’s fantastic

CROOKES SOCIAL CLUB “LEAP FORWARD” TONY HADLEY SET TO HEADLINE THE OPENING CEREMONY FOR TO SAVE LIVES IN CROOKES SPECIAL OLYMPICS GB’S NATIONAL GAMES BRAMALL LANE STADIUM Following over a year of fund raising activities Crookes Social Club will unveil the first defibrillator to be provided for the local community. Fund raising started in April 2016 with several members of the club abseiling from Millersdale Viaduct in the Derbyshire peaks. Since then the club has held raffles and collections to raise the funds needed to by this life saving unit. The idea to raise funds was the brain child of General Manager Maurice Champeau who decided something had to be done when a customer, John Hardy, had a cardiac arrest whilst playing snooker. “I was amazed to find that there were no defibrillators available in the area” said Maurice. “We performed CPR on John for what seemed an eternity until the emergency services
arrived. If we had had a unit available I am convinced we could have restarted his heart sooner. John has now made a good recovery although he will be the first to admit that the heart attack has left him with some permeant health issues. Had we been able to restart his heart quicker things may well have been different” On Friday July, the 28th at 10:30 am Lord Mayor of Sheffield Councillor Anne Murphy will formally unveil the first unit at Crookes Social Club. Present at the unveiling along with the Lord
Mayor will be several members of the club who helped raise the funds needed as well as John Hardy who is the inspiration behind the fund-raising effort. The first unit will be installed in the club and is available to the anyone who needs in whenever the club is open. The Crookes Social Club defibrillator team aim to continue to raise funds to buy more units for the area. The second unit should be purchased and installed by the end of August 2017 and will be available around the clock.
Iconic singer Tony Hadley will be headlining at the Opening Ceremony for Special Olympics GB’s National Games on the evening of Tuesday 8th August at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane Stadium. The Opening Ceremony show will be hosted by three big name stars – Downton Abbey’s Jim Carter, F1 broadcaster Suzi Perry and football pundit Chris Kamara. Additional entertainment on the night will be provided
by the Rationale Theatre Company and will see local talented Yorkshire based artists including ‘Under the Stars’, ‘Team Power Stilts’, ‘Aim To Dance’, ‘Kansaze African Dancers’, ‘Chinese Lions Dance’, ‘Team Katalyst’ Dance & Gymnasts and the ‘ParaCheer’ Cheerleaders. Also at Special Olympics GB’s Opening Ceremony will be James Toseland – former double World Superbikes Champion turned rock music
artist – who will be performing ‘We’ll Stop at Nothing’, the 2017 Official Special Olympics National Summer Games Anthem. The song has been released with all profits going to the charity to support athletes with learning disability. Due to the high demand from SO Athletes and families, unfortunately there are no wheelchair accessible seats left available at the Opening Ceremony. Ticket prices for the
Opening Ceremony at Bramall Lane start from as little as £5. The public can now
access tickets to the Opening Ceremony at www.sufc.co.uk/specialolympics

CITY CENTRE HOARDINGS TRANSFORMED
The hoardings surrounding Doncaster’s Grade II listed Corn Exchange are set to be transformed into an eye-catching art exhibit next week thanks to the artistic talent of Doncaster born artist SP Zero 76 and Kid Crayon. Both SP Zero 76 and Kid Crayon are internationally renowned illustrators and street artists currently based in Bristol. From Monday 17 July, they will be bringing the uninspiring boards to life with their interpretation of Doncaster through the ages. Working with Doncaster Council and Doncopolitan, the boards will use illustrations to tell a brief history of the whole borough. It will feature ‘Danum’ the name given to Doncaster in Roman times, Conisbrough Castle, the award winning market, coal mining, St George’s Minster, the St Leger, Doncaster Sheffield Airport, Tour de Yorkshire, the National College of High Speed Rail and Yorkshire Wildlife Park to name just a few. There will be something for everyone in the intricate design. SP Zero 76 and Kid Crayon will complete the design installation in a number of phases. The first phase began on17 July and lasted for a week. They will both then return later in August to complete the artwork. To complement the design of Doncaster through the ages, the council are working with Doncaster College students and market traders to show what the market has to offer and to capture its atmosphere. Photos will be taken of the traders with their produce, which will be enlarged and attached to the hoardings. Cllr Nigel Ball said: “The designs we have seen from SP Zero and Kid Crayon are fantastic and really depict the changes that Doncaster has been through over the decades. It is not every day that Doncaster has internationally renowned street artists displaying their talents in Doncaster. We have worked very closely with them both to ensure we get the right style and look for the design, something that will complement the historic Grade II listed Corn Exchange. We hope that people will come
along and see the finished designs, gain some understanding about Doncaster’s rich heritage, whilst also seeing how much it has changed and our vision of Doncaster’s future. We are confident the hoardings will become another visitor attraction in our town centre.” SP Zero 76, said: “It is great that I have been given the opportunity to display my art work in my home town. When I was given the brief of depicting Doncaster through the ages I thought this was a great approach and really gave me something to work with. This has been a great project to work on and I hope that I have created something for everyone in the design.” SP Zero 76 has a varied portfolio, which includes magazine art, wall art, album covers, flyers, corporate illustration, children’s trading cards and t-shirt designs. He has also worked for some big organisations including, Lamborghini, Samsung, BBC and Red Bull. Since October 2016 the Corn Exchange has been under construction to make full repairs to the weather worn masonry and the roof of the building. Plans are also in place to redevelop Doncaster Market. More than £3million of Sheffield City Region SCRIF funding has been secured by Doncaster Council to revamp the jewel in the crown of the town centre, the award winning market place. The aim is to transform the market area into a vibrant and bustling location all week long and into the evenings.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
Another week of varying fortunes, but eventually, I got something in the net… My first outing was to the glorious River Derwent; of all the rivers I fish, this is perhaps my favourite, and I visited in search of barbel, hoping for a daytime fish despite low level of water, and bright sunlight… not ideal! I fish a lovely stretch which gives access to a superb weir, with a long pool below, which I know holds fish, but had been subjected to quite a bit of angling pressure in the days beforehand to add to the conundrum. I set up two rods, both 1.5lb test curve, one with a crystal chubber float attached, the other to leger with, a two ounce bomb wrapped in oily Spotted Fin Hemp Paste, and a relatively short hook link, baited with an matching boilie, which was pushed in to the paste to prevent tangles. I spent half an hour or so flicking bait into the swim, hoping to draw fish to feed, then ran the float through the swim a few times hoping for a quick bite. I like long trotting, it’s a great way to explore a swim quickly, offering the option to change depth and speed of the bait as it passes through, but sadly, no barbel chose to pursue the baits, and after a good hour of constant feeding and trotting, I decided to gently lob the leger into ‘the crease’, and leave it to settle, hoping for a ‘three foot twitch’… It’s always fun to watch the rod tip nodding in the flow, trying to pick out the odd movement which may give the first indication of a fish, and if you know what you are looking for, there is so much to decipher. Some bites are obvious, and necessitate hanging on to the rod, but others are much subtler, and herein lies the challenge; is it a fish, or is it debris, a surge of water, or something else causing it to move? In this case, it was something else… I’d noted a flicker of the tip, and wondered if minnows were attacking

the paste wrapped around the lead, but then a slow pull of a couple of inches, coupled with the tip gently returning to its original position indicated the possibility of those most efficient of bait robbers, the crayfish! I hate these things with a passion, hate the way they spoil a session, hate the way they tangle rigs and steal bait, and more than anything, I hate trying to disentangle the damn things! In three casts, I had three, claw waving, pincer snapping Signal Reds, but it didn’t prepare me for number four, which was, quite simply, the biggest one I’d ever seen! On the bank, with claws outspread, daring me to try and get my hook back, it must have measured about ten inches across, and it was angry! There is only one way to deal with them, and so it was quickly despatched, but as I was being plagued with them, it was time to go… no fish today! A second session saw me visit a stillwater in pursuit of carp. A single rod, again my trusty Sonik S3, with a test curve of only 1.5lb was deployed, and I packed a method feeder with groundbait and tiny pellets, before mounting an 8mm wafter on the hook. The whole lot was lowered into the water less than a rod length from the bank, and a few handfuls of particles thrown over the top. At this venue, the fish can be caught very close to the bank, so I usually sit well back, lower the bait in where I can see it, place the rod on the rests, and wait for the fun to start! I can’t pretend it needs any real skill to catch here, the club committee have provided ‘fish soup’, but it’s a venue to boost the confidence of the desperate angler, and I only had a few hours, so needed to catch! I do appreciate it though; the gents (and ladies) who frequent the bank are indeed a fine bunch, some as many as 90 years old, but all love their angling, and it’s a pleasure to share bank time with some of the ‘old guard’, which makes it even more enjoyable. Within an hour or so, I’d racked up a trio of double figure carp, and I’d seen all of them take the bait, but then I saw the bait just vanish before my eyes as the rod tip hooped around with an unknown adversary on the other end! The fish shot off into towards the middle of the lake, but after a few minutes, I caught a glimpse of a long, torpedo shaped flank, and soon recognised it as a fine barbel, which eventually came to the net. Quickly unhooked, photographed, and then rested before release, it really was a welcome bonus fish after the usual carp, and by the end of a fun day, I’d had five barbel, eighteen double figure carp, and a single bream to foul my nets before home; I can’t moan

at that, it’s good fishing… Later in the week, I fancied another crack at the excellent tench fishing available on another of my club cards, so headed off to an old estate lake, set in fabulous woodland, hoping for a tinca or two. There are carp in this lake too, although not in any great numbers, but I’d still like to catch one! I set my stall out for both for a change; a lighter rod, armed with a method feeder for tench and bream, and a heavier rig (and rod) hoping to fluke a carp. The method ball was flung towards the far reed line, and the other, a simple Ronnie rig baited with 15mm Spotted Fin Catalyst pop up attached, was whacked as far as I could cast into a distant bay where I’d seen fish rolling. I opted for the pop up hoping it would settle nicely on the silt, and then spread a load of matching bottom bait freebies around it, and left it to settle. The method ball was already drawing attention, a series of twitches and bleeps alerting me to me interest, before the bobbin smacked up towards the rod, and I lifted into a decent bream which quickly surrendered and came to the bank. A series of tench followed, all to the method, and then a screaming take on the other rod, raising my hopes of carp, saw yet another tinca netted…oh. I lost a tench, then netted two more, snaffled a couple of pleasant roach, then lifted into another good tench on the ‘carp’ rod, before the swim went dead as the sun rose higher. On this water, such a ‘switch’ isn’t unusual as the fish move along almost nine hundred yards of water, and you just have to wait until they return, so I set about some product photography to fill the time… and drank tea, and read my book, and drank more tea. The hours passed, and I hadn’t had another knock, so as Emmerdale time approached, (you can’t miss one can you?) I decided to go home. The return to the van is always a pleasure, and walking along the bank through the adjacent woodland brings the usual ‘caught anything’ questioning from other anglers, so I spent almost an hour discussing the days tactics with other fisherman. It turns out that throwing a load of freebies in isn’t a good tactic here, as the fish leave the baits until after dark (no night fishing
here) and shy off big beds of bait; lesson learned. I’d chucked out around two kilos of bait, and had a far less successful day than normal, so although I ended my day with seven tench, a bream and some quality roach, I’d obviously spoiled my chances by making a basic error… and I didn’t catch a carp either, so the quest goes on to bag one from this water… maybe next week…

18S ENJOY CARDEN NEW CONTRACTS PARK TRAINING CAMP FOR BLADES The Owls Under-18s’ preparations for the new campaign continued last week with an intense three-day training camp at Carden Park. During the short stay, the 18s took part in daily double sessions and competed against Chester City in a friendly, that saw the Owls triumph 2-1. Along with providing the boys with vital minutes under the belt, the Cheshire trip gave the new scholars an ideal chance to embed into the group. Under-18 manager Ben Wilkinson said: “The lads worked really hard with double sessions every day, including early morning running sessions at 7:30am round the vast estate and golf courses. “The aim of the trip was to get some hard work into the players and have a change of environment. “It also gave us the opportunity to get the lads together for a few days and integrate the new first year scholars into the group. “We are very much building to our first game of the season and slowly increasing the workload to ensure the players arrive at that game in peak fitness. “It was great to get away for a few days and finish the trip off nicely with a game against Chester.”

WARNE PLEASED WITH PRE-SEASON ENCOUNTER A tightly-contested pre-season friendly was edged by Rotherham’s neighbours Sheffield United but Millers boss Paul Warne was particularly pleased with his side’s display. The 2-1 scoreline didn’t truly reflect the game, with Jerry Yates pulling a goal back for the Millers in this all-South Yorkshire affair. “I thought it was a good, open game of football,” said Warne. “It was two teams trying to win the game. It was pretty end-to-end and a physical encounter. It felt like a league game and we went toe-to-toe pretty well. Obviously I took my 11 off after 68 minutes and it’s disappointing we conceded the goal. “Overall, I’m pleased with the performance. I’ve got no injuries but, unfortunately for me, Proctor and Williams have got a bit of a knock in training yesterday afternoon. But they’ll be fit for Tuesday night so I’ll have a full spectrum of players to pick from. I wish we’d have scored more goals. “Our play, at times, was excellent. We’ve been scor-

ing goals for fun in pre-season but this was a real challenge for us. They were the best team in League One by a country mile last year. We’re trying to build confidence back up for the lads and the new recruits performed really well tonight. “It’s a pity they didn’t score before I brought them off because I felt their play deserved it. On another night we might have gone one or two-nil up. If you came as a neutral I think you’ll have really enjoyed it.” The Millers’ most effective player on the night was new recruit Kieffer Moore, with Warne adding of the striker, “I don’t think anyone can dispute he was a handful. He had pockets of excellence when he was chesting the ball down and running at the back three. He was a real handful from the start. We didn’t play direct to him a great deal. “He’s done really well. He’s a committed lad, he wants to play football and he’s a fit lad. He’ll score goals for us in League One. A lot of my players have come away with a lot of credit against a very good team.” Despite a general disappointment concerning the two goals conceded, Warne is optimistic his squad will compete during the forthcoming campaign. “You’re always disappointed with conceding goals,” Warne added. “The first one we didn’t look tight enough. The second one got stuck in the grass. We’ll look at the goals conceded but, generally, I want to go away positive about bits of our play. It shows we have put a squad together that can really compete.”

COUNTDOWN TO BRENTFORD WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH
Football fans tend to curse the summer break, asking themselves every year how to fill the void left when the season finishes. The weeks quickly pass and before the swimming trunks go back in the wardrobe a new campaign approaches. In under two weeks time, Sheffield United will have to be ready to take on Brentford in their first Championship fixture in six years. My own judgement is that preparations have been ‘okay’ so far. Transfer movement at Bramall Lane has certainly improved the team, the incoming talent being a clear mark up on the outgoing talent. Richard Stearman brings Championship experience to a well-organised back line. Enda Stevens provides more going forward than his left-back partner Daniel Lafferty. The formerBurnley man was a solid option for Wilder last season, but provided little in attack. The nature of the formation, which relies heavily on wing-backs, made the upgrade necessary. Ched Evans, George Baldock and Nathan Thomas remain unknown quantities due to a lack of game time. The emergence of David Brooks has given many Blades fans a reason to smile. We can only hope to see the youngster fulfill some of his potential before the big boys come calling. Despite the positivity, there are some reasons to carry slight doubts into next Saturday. The injury to Simon Moore, which appears to be serious at the time of writing, creates a huge headache for Wilder and his team. Jake Eastwood, 20, is the only senior keeper available for selection. The recruitment of a goalkeeper had been on Wilder’s ‘to do’ list before the injury, but that search will have certainly intensified in recent days. The countdown to Brentford begins, with Romaine Sawyers, Alan Judge and Jota ready to test United’s Championship preparation.
MAINSTAYS
Chris Wilder has been boosted ahead of the Championship campaign by the news that four of his mainstays from last season have committed their futures to the club. Billy Sharp, Paul Coutts, Chris Basham and Kieron Freeman have all signed new contracts with the Blades. Sharp, Coutts and Basham have signed two year contracts, whilst 25-year-old Freeman has been handed a three year deal. Boss Wilder is understandably delighted that all four have signed: “It is a big day for everyone at Sheffield United with these four signing new deals. We cannot underestimate how important it is to have them on board, alongside the new signings and the players we hope to bring in. “We are looking for all four to step up a level and enjoy the challenges of the Championship.” Captain Sharp scored 30 goals in in his first season as skipper, as he led the team with distinction during a record breaking campaign. Midfielder Coutts is a fans’ favourite, was an instrumental part of the Blades success, forming a terrific partnership alongside John Fleck. Coutts scored four times and made 47 appearances in all competitions. All-action Basham once again proved his reliability and versatility to to the squad, making 48 appearances, covering a number of positions in the process, netting vital goals at Scunthorpe and Bradford. Marauding wing-back Freeman scored 11 times in 47 appearances, in addition to a number of assists, as he blossomed under the manager of Wilder and his coaching staff.
PROGRESS IMPRESSES BUTLER Club captain Andy Butler is happy with the direction Rovers are heading in, after the side’s 1-0 win over Vanarama National League side Guiseley AFC on Saturday. Liam Mandeville’s 19th minute strike was enough for Rovers to fend off the non-league side and Butler was happy that they could keep their third clean sheet out of a possible four. “It’s a clean sheet, another well worked goal for Liam Mandeville and it’s another step in the right direction,” he said. “I think we made it more difficult than it needed to be, we did not move the ball as quickly as we should have done really but when we did I thought we were really good. “It has been a difficult pre-season but a good one, the squad came back in great condition, better than last year actually and I think it has shown in games as players are already playing 90 minutes with ease.” Rovers face Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday evening at the Keepmoat Stadium and Butler is looking forward to testing himself against another Sky Bet Championship side. “The work doesn’t stop after pre-season, you keep on working throughout the season to get better, there were a few positives definitely which we will build on and take them into the game against Sheffield Wednesday. “The new players have been very good, Ben Whiteman once he is on the ball has a great range of passing and it’s the same wit Danny Andrew, some of his angle passes are brilliant and he will be a big asset to the team.”
