ST LEGER DONCASTER CUP TICKETS TO BE WON!
The Socialites E-Cigarettes Doncaster Cup and Gentleman’s Day is the penultimate day of the iconic Ladbrokes St. Leger Festival, attracting some of the most prestigious racing of the week, with the Doncaster Cup, the oldest race currently run under the Rules of Horse Racing, taking centre-stage. The two-and-a-quarter mile Doncaster Cup is one of the premier races for ‘long-distance’ horses which takes place as the final leg of the ‘stayers’ Triple Crown, following on from the Ascot Gold Cup and the Goodwood Cup at Glorious Goodwood. This year’s Doncaster Cup has a gentleman’s theme with a host of added attractions including laser clay pigeon shooting and classic car displays on offer. And new for 2015, gents will now have the chance to win a package of great prizes in the Best Dressed Male competition sponsored by Frenchgate Shopping Centre. Your Mercury has teamed up with Doncaster
Racecourse to offer three lucky readers the chance to win a pair of County Enclosure tickets to enjoy the Socialites E-Cigarettes Doncaster Cup and Gentleman’s Day which gets underway with the first race at 1.55pm. Simply answer the following question and send your entry with contact details to info@ mercurynewspaper.co.uk before noon on Monday 8th September Over what distance is the Doncaster cup run?
The Ladbrokes St. Leger Festival takes place from September 9th to the 12th. The J2O Spritz Leger Legends Day and its centrepiece the Leger Legends race marks day one, followed by the glitz and glamour of DFS Ladies Day on September 10th. The penultimate day of the festival attracts some of the most prestigious racing of the week, with the long-established Socialites E-Cigarettes Doncaster Cup Gentlemen’s Day taking centrestage, before the Ladbrokes St. Leger Stakes brings the four-day bonanza to a dramatic climax on September 12th. To find out more about the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival or to book tickets visit www.doncasterracecourse.co.uk/st-leger or call 01302 304 200.

I’m the security guard at The National Sausage Museum and I’m bored senseless because we get no visitors. I just sit here all day long, staring at the same four Walls’. I thought chiropractors were a waste of money, but I stand corrected. I succesfully predicted the lottery last night. I predicted I’d win sod all. I knew I was getting old when a fortune teller offered to read my face. I went to the zoo today and asked if they had any talking parrots. The zookeeper said they didn’t, but they had a woodpecker that knew morse code. One day, during a lesson on grammar, the teacher asked for a show of hands for who could use the word “beautiful” in the same sentence twice. First, she called on Jane, who responded with, “My father bought my mother a beautiful dress and she looked beautiful in it.” “Very good, Jane,” replied the teacher. She then called on David. “My mum planned a beautiful party and it turned out beautifully, he said. “Excellent, David!” Then, the teacher called on little Johnny. “Last night, at the dinner table, my sister told my father that she was pregnant, and he said, ‘Beautiful, just bloody beautiful!’”. How many mimes have died because no one really believed they were choking? A man goes for an interview as a bus driver. When he gets there, the interviewer says, “You’re 45 minutes late! The job’s yours.”

SHARE SPORTING MEMORIES Love talking about Sport? Or hearing others ‘Remember when...’ ?
VOLUNTEERS WANTED We are looking for sports fans to help deliver weekly Sporting Reminiscence groups for older people, some of whom may be lonely or living with dementia; and to discover and share their memories about the sports they love. Unlocking sporting memories is about to become a powerful tool in tackling loneliness, depression and dementia amongst older people in Sheffield. It’s already received national awards for helping improve the lives of older people and we’re pleased to be part of it. As a summer of sport kicks off, we’re putting plans in place to launch sporting
memories groups at five libraries across the city this autumn. Sports fans are now being sought to help with regular sessions and to help research the sporting history of Sheffield. Would you like to volunteer at one of these libraries? Central, Crystal Peaks, Ecclesall, Firth Park, Stocksbridge Whether it is cricket, rugby, football, boxing, snooker or athletics, by using old photographs, newspaper articles and memorabilia, discussion can help older people forge new friendships, share great memories and sometimes even get back into sport themselves. Full training and on-going support will be provided for this rewarding and fulfilling role.

PREPARE FOR WINTER MOTORING Suddenly it’s September! Temperatures are dropping, the days are getting shorter, and it’s only just over twelve weeks to Christmas! Your car may have been reliable and problemfree over the Summer months, but if there’s anything not quite right, it will start to show before long as the cold weather and dark nights take their toll! We have out together an Autumn checklist to try and prevent problems before they arise. So why not give your pride & joy the once-over this weekend and try to avoid trouble in the future! Battery and electrics Lights, heaters and wipers put high demands on the car battery. If your driving is mainly dark rush-hour trips, the battery will give out eventually. Batteries rarely last longer than five years. Replacing one near the end of its life can save a lot of time and inconvenience at the side of the road • Avoid running electrical systems any longer than necessary – turn the heater fan down and switch the heated rear window off once windows are clear. • If the car stands idle most of the weekend a regular overnight trickle charge is a good idea to give the battery a chance to revive. • Turn off non-essential electrical loads like lights, rear screen heater and wipers before trying to start the engine. • Use the starter in short five-second bursts if the engine doesn’t start quickly, leaving thirty seconds between attempts to allow the battery to recover. Antifreeze A continuous squealing noise as soon as the engine is started is a sign the water pump is frozen - it’s the fan belt slipping on the pulley. The cylinder block could be frozen too. Stop the engine immediately and allow it to thaw out. This may take several days unless the car can be moved to a heated garage. If the car begins to overheat a few miles from home it’s likely that the radiator has frozen preventing coolant from circulating. Stop straight away to avoid serious damage and allow the radiator to thaw. • Antifreeze costs only a few pounds, but a frozen and cracked engine block will cost hundreds of pounds to repair. • Most modern cars use long-life antifreeze it’s important to use the right type and avoid

mixing different types. Check the handbook or ask a dealer for advice. Some types of antifreeze may need to be changed after only two years. Check the manufacturer’s service schedule. You need a 50-50 mix of antifreeze and water in the cooling system for winter. This gives maximum protection down to -34° centigrade, and without it, severe engine damage costing hundreds of pounds can occur. Vision Keep the windscreen and other windows clear – if your vision is obscured through dirt, snow or even sticker-infested car windows you could face a hefty fine. Clear snow from the roof as well as from windows as this can fall onto the windscreen obscuring your view. It can be a hazard to other road users as well. Dazzle from a low winter sun can be a particular problem. Improve vision by making sure that the windscreen is clean both inside and out. Scratches, abrasion and chips on the outside can also worsen the dazzling effect of the sun. Greasy smears on the screen that don’t go with use of a normal screenwash additive will require a little elbow grease. Try using a cream glass polish with a slight abrasive action. If that doesn’t work then try dishwasher powder dissolved in a little water – Use clean kitchen paper to clean a small area at a time and try not to go back over a patch you’ve just done. Use air conditioning for faster demisting and to reduce condensation on cold windows. Check windscreen wipers and replace if necessary. Make sure that wipers are switched off in the park position when leaving the car, when there’s risk of freezing. If you don’t and the blades freeze to the screen, you could damage the blades or wiper motor when you turn the ignition on. Top up Windscreen washer fluid and treat with a suitable additive to reduce the chance of freezing. Don’t use ordinary engine antifreeze as it will damage paintwork.
Visibility Make sure that all bulbs are working and that lenses are clean. When roads are really mucky you might need to clean lights after every journey. Keep the number plates clean too, as you can be fined if they are dirty and illegible. If you have to clear snow from the car it’s important to clear it from the lights - front and back - as well as from the glass and roof. You must use headlights when visibility is seriously
reduced. You may also use front or rear fog lights but these must be switched off when visibility improves as they can dazzle other road users and obscure your brake lights. Tyres We recommend at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring, and certainly no less than 2mm. Don’t reduce tyre pressures to get more grip – it doesn’t work, and reduces stability. It’s rare to need snow chains unless you live in an isolated area hit with heavy snow, and where the roads are not cleared. They must be removed to drive on a metalled road without a reasonable covering of snow.
Consider changing to winter or all season tyres – these have a higher silica content in the tread which prevents it hardening at lower temperatures, and therefore gives better grip in cold wet conditions. You and your passengers Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. As well as the things you should be carrying on every journey regardless of the weather, you should make up a winter emergency kit to keep in the boot – hopefully you won’t need it but you will be very glad it’s there if you do. Year-round essentials • Fully-charged mobile phone and in-car charger • Sunglasses – to deal with glare from the sun or snow • Personal medication • Warning triangle • Spare bulbs • First aid kit • Road atlas – in case of diversions • Sat-nav or printed route for unfamiliar journeys • Breakdown membership card Winter emergency kit • Blanket, rug or sleeping bag • Shovel • Bits of carpet or thick cardboard to place under driven wheels to help regain traction on ice or snow • Salt, sand or cat litter – to help clear snow and ice • Reflective jacket(s) • Ice scraper and de-icer • Torch and batteries • Tow rope • Snow chains (if you live in a remote or rural area) • Battery jump leads • Bottled water • Snacks – chocolate or cereal bars

Highways England project manager, Martin Barnes, said: “These improvements will increase the capacity of the junction which currently sees significant traffic congestion on the approaches at peak times. “We are carrying out this improvement work at night to minimise disruption to road users. It’s essential that the work takes place so that drivers can benefit from safer journeys.” All approaches to the junction will be affected and a 30mph speed limit will be in place for safety reasons.

The roundabout will be signalised with traffic lights installed to control the flow of traffic round the junction. A road will cut through the centre of the roundabout and traffic following the A61 will continue across the junction without the need to negotiate the roundabout. All of the approaches to the junction and the roundabout will also be widened as part of the scheme which will start on Monday 14 September. The scheme will be delivered in three phases. The site office has been built and noise testing carried out from Monday 24 August. Preparatory groundwork will start on Monday 14 September until Friday 4 March. All work will take place between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday only. The main construction work, phase 3, will start in April 2016.

AFTER TRIUMPHANT FESTIVAL RETURN MUMFORD & SONS ANNOUNCE SHEFFIELD ARENA DATE Mumford & Sons have capped off an incredible Summer with a huge British return show at Leeds Festival last weekend, where they also announced details of a UK Tour at the end of 2015 that will see the band make their first visit to Sheffield Arena on Sunday 29th November. The Summer of 2015 has been the best ever for the band. Back in
June, they headlined the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester Tennessee followed by a series of breathtaking shows in some equally breath-taking European locations. From capacity crowd at Verona’s ancient Roman amphitheatre, followed by a performance amongst the woodland of Goffertpark in Nijmegen, and then two incredible nights at Berlin’s Waldbühne amphitheatre as the
sun set in the shadows of the city’s Olympic Stadium. Before two jubilant sold-out dates at the legendary Forum in LA. And as promised from the main stage at Reading, Mumford & Sons will return to the UK later this year for their first tour here since 2012. They head out in November for an eleven date run, stopping off at the Sheffield Arena on Sunday 29th November. Mumford & Sons will be joined in Sheffield by special guest Jack Garratt. Tickets for Mumford & Sons at Sheffield Arena go on sale Friday 4th September at 9am. Tickets purchased by phone on 0114 256 5656 and online at www. sheffieldarena.co.uk are priced £41.25 (standing & seating) or £27.50 (seating) including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person from the Arena box office are priced £39.38 (seated and standing) or £26.25 (seated) including booking fee.

WORTLEY HALL SHORTLISTED FOR PRESTIGIOUS AWARD Wortley Hall are pleased to announce they have been shortlisted for best wedding venue for customer service at this year’s North of England Wedding Awards. The awards are held annually to honour the best suppliers for weddings and the awards dinner will take place at York Racecourse on 14th September. The awards are voted by couples who vote for the venue based on their overall experience for the day and the customer service they received. Wortley Hall is the only venue in South Yorkshire to be shortlisted and are up against stiff competition from West and North Yorkshire venues. It has been a record breaking year for Wortley Hall with over 135
weddings choosing the venue to host their big day. The hall only hosts one wedding per day to assure that the couple feels it is their special day and has seen an increase in mid- week weddings with hosting 27 weddings in August alone. With bookings already for 2019 Wortley Hall continues to strive to not only be one of the most popular local wedding venues but now has achieved reputation of one of the best venues in Yorkshire” For more information regarding Wortley Hall please contact Sarah Myatt, Sales Manager on 0114 2882100

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
A day out at Gawsworth Fisheries in Cheshire this week, in company with Dave and Deb who are members of the team at GO-Outdoors (Stoke) angling concept store where I provide social media services and photography as part of my freelance work. The day was intended to be a ‘fact finding’ mission for my colleagues as they get to know local fisheries to be better able to provide good advice to customers in store, and I was there to test a brand new rod blank which isn’t in stores yet! We decided to target Wood Pool, the recognised specimen lake to try and tempt some carp or perhaps even an elusive catfish, so we all set up within a few yards of each other and commenced fishing. Whilst the GO team started to catch fish, I opened up the rod bag to extract the new rod… In truth (and most unfortunately) I can’t say much about it as my feedback is yet to be absorbed whilst decisions are made, but my first impressions were very favourable indeed. As expected, the rod performs superbly well, fits firmly within an affordable bracket, and looks great…. Which is the most important aspect for some! As I pottered about with the new wand, catching a stream of smaller fish, I sat patiently hoping to hook something a little larger to really give the rod a bit of a workout, and it happened fairly quickly with a single figure carp against which the new blank performed well. Soon after, I

hit into a much larger fish which eventually snapped me after a lengthy tussle; it wasn’t the fault of the blank, it was purely down to me taking my eye off the ball as I looked at the pleasing curve of the rod instead of looking where the fish was! Meanwhile, Dave had taken a reasonable carp a couple of pegs down from my swim, his pva stick and bottom bait approach to a day ticket water faring well, but poor Deb was struggling to catch anything substantial. In fairness, Deb is a newcomer to carp angling, so is still trying to find tactics which suit (aren’t we all?) and was definitely hampered by being in the middle of three swims. Keen to catch a catfish too, Deb was disappointed to have only odd bleeps which didn’t transfer into positive action as bream homed in on pellet hookbaits. A change to the quivertip soon brightened her spirits, a little rig advice was taken on board, and a steady run of silver fish were soon banked which eased the pressure somewhat! Dave lost another decent fish at the net, then we noticed that carp were beginning to cruise on the surface. A change to floater tactics was obviously needed, and we fed steadily in the hope that Deb would be lucky enough to break her personal best with one of the bigger fish which were enjoying the evening sunshine. Alas, it was not to be; although there was some small interest in Deb’s mixers and pop ups, we couldn’t tempt a decent take between us as cagey carp held off until baits were decayed by smaller fish and they picked up the slowly sinking debris. We tried every trick in the book to no avail, but it was still fun, punctuated by “Ohh!” and “Ahh!” as carp breezed by nonchalantly, teasing us with big bows waves and slurps just behind the baited hook! So ended the day with a couple of decent carp, Dave and I both lost fish, and Deb did well on the tip. We all enjoyed a smashing day on a lovely venue, shared some giggles and frustrations, and then recounted the day’s events in the van on the way home for tea. A perfect days fishing? Not far off, and nice to share it with friends….

STRONG SECOND HALF NOT ENOUGH FOR MILLERS A STRONG second-half showing saw Rotherham United come close to grabbing a share of the spoils but they slipped to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Fulham. Ben Pringle came back to haunt his former employers with the opening goal before Ross McCormack gave the Millers’ a mountain to climb at the interval as he struck from the spot. Cottagers ‘keeper Andy Lonergan saved Matt Derbyshire’s spot-kick before Jonson Clarke-Harris’ second goal of the season gave the home side hope of a point but sub Cauley Woodrow scored in second-half stoppage time to seal the deal for the Londoners, who earned their first league victory of the campaign. Following their impressive midweek showing against Norwich City, the Millers made three changes to their starting line-up for the visit of the Cottagers. ‘Keeper Adam Collin was retained between the sticks for his first league start of the campaign while Paul Green was recalled to the Millers engine room following his goalscoring cameo against the Canaries. Richie Smallwood shrugged off a hamstring injury sustained against QPR last weekend to take his place alongside Green, while Chris Maguire was given an opportunity to impress on the right-hand side of midfield as Emmanuel Ledesma and Grant Ward had to settle for places on the substitutes bench. For the Londoners, Pringle was given a standing ovation by the home faithful on his first return to the AESSEAL New York Stadium following his summer switch to the capital. The visitors had the first sight of goal when McCormack’s flick on paved the way for Ryan Tunnicliffe and Tom Cairney to exchange passes which saw
the former drag a shot harmlessly wide of the target. Moments later, Maguire showed great tenacity to pounce on the loose ball before advancing menacingly towards the edge of the box whereby he drilled a low effort which stung the palms of Lonergan. In the next Millers’ attack, a threaded ball released Derbyshire in the channel and his timely pull-back looked inch-perfect for the run of Clarke-Harris, who momentarily got infront of his marker, but his flick lacked punch as Tim Ream blocked his effort. However, the home fans were stunned as Fulham had the opening say on seven minutes with Pringle coming back to haunt his former club. There looked little danger when the play was switched to Jazz Richards on the right but the ex-Swansea defender swung a tantalising centre which saw Moussa Dembele rise highest to plant a downward header which was parried by Collin but the ball rolled invitingly into the path of Pringle, who had the simple task of tapping home into the unguarded net. The visitors were buoyed by the breakthrough and Dembele got the better of Halford before presenting McCormack with an opportunity to race into the box and the ex-Leeds striker drilled an effort which was blocked by the feet of Collin and fortunately for the home side, Pringle was unable to turn the rebound goalwards as he was crowded out by retreating defenders. However, the afternoon was to take another turn for the worse for the home side on the quarter hour as Fulham were given an opportunity to double their lead when James Husband got the better of Lewis Buxton to waltz into the box before being unceremoniously felled by Halford and referee Mr Eltringham had no hesitation
in pointing to the spot. From the resultant penalty, McCormack kept his nerve to calmly stroke the ball past the outstretched hand of Collin as it arrowed into the bottom corner of the net. The Millers responded positively to the setback and Maguire worked himself into a shooting position before his snap effort was deflected by Richards into the side netting. Moments later, the home side almost grabbed a lifeline when Maguire’s freekick was not cleared decisively by the Londoners and Clarke-Harris attempted an acrobatic overhead kick which was heading towards goal before Green deftly flicked the ball into the bottom corner but any joy was shortlived as the assistant referee had flagged for offside. Just before the half hour mark, Derbyshire failed to get his shot away but Joe Newell pounced on the hesitancy to skip to the byline before pulling the ball back into the path of Green, who had the goal at his mercy, but he failed to make a proper connection as the visitors’ saw out the danger. Home frustration was summed up when Maguire became the first to see yellow for tripping Husband in full flow and from the resultant free-kick from McCormack, Jamie O’Hara tried his luck from distance but he failed to test Collin as it flew harmlessly wide of the target. Minutes later, Buxton’s clip over the top saw Clarke-Harris show fleet of foot to work a yard on his marker before being bundled over in the box by a retreating defender as he looked to strike but the referee waved away home protests for a spot-kick. In the visitors’ next attack, the Millers had a stroke of luck when Clarke-Harris made a hash of clearing the ball and Dembele struck a rasping effort which
was heading towards goal before striking McCormack en-route to goal, preventing the Cottagers adding a third. Moments later, Pringle controlled a long ball with effortless ease before playing a tantalising cross which was inches away from giving Tunnicliffe a certain tap-in before Derbyshire turned on a sixpence before striking an effort from the edge of the box which looked punch as Lonergan was well-placed to snuff out the danger. With half-time approaching, Cairney twice headed wide from back-to-back O’Hara corners’ before Tunnicliffe’s instinctive effort was deflected over by Halford. Millers’ chief Steve Evans made a double substitution at the interval and it almost paid immediate dividends when duo Grant Ward and Aidy White combined when White met Ward’s floated cross to head across goal but to home frustration, neither Derbyshire or the on-rushing Buxton was able to turn the ball home from close range. The Millers’ afternoon took another cruel twist when Frazer Richardson had to be stretched off following an innocuous incident before the home side wasted a giltedged chance to drag themselves back into the affair ten minutes into the half. Clarke-Harris’ neat flick injected pace into a home move and Green burst into the box before being bundled over by Richards and the referee pointed to the spot for the second time. However, Derbyshire was unable to give the Millers a lifeline when Lonergan guessed the right way to parry his spotkick to safety. Just past the hour mark, the visitors came within a coat of paint of adding a third when O’Hara’s threaded pass saw McCormack get the ball from under his feet before striking a rasping effort from dis-
tance which may have got a touch from Collin as it cannoned against the home crossbar before falling to safety. In the next home attack, Derbyshire almost atoned for his penalty miss when he latched onto Ledesma’s pass to strike a dipping effort which seemed to deceive Lonergan, who had a stroke of luck as his weak punch was inches away from Green, who was in attendance in the sixyard box. However, the Millers were finally rewarded for their efforts with 20 minutes remaining when Fulham were guilty of complacency as Green showed great tenacity to win possession and although the midfielder lost his footing following a clash with Cairney, Clarke-Harris picked up the loose ball before driving hard at the Fulham rearguard to strike a rasping left-footed effort which flew past the dive of Lonergan in the blink of an eye. The home side had a spring in their step and McCormack was shown a yellowcard for a rash tackle on Smallwood before Derbyshire latched onto Clarke-Harris’ towering flick-on to fire an instinctive effort which flew across the face of goal but failed to trouble the target. Sub Lasse Vigen Christensen became the latest to incur the wrath of referee Eltringham as he cynically felled White to earn a caution before Smallwood kept the Millers in the game as he threw his body in the way of Cairney’s goalbound shot. The Millers’ were given hope as seven minutes of stoppage time were announced but the Londoners made the points safe when O’Hara ghosted into the box before playing a timely pullback into the path of Woodrow and the England Under-21 international showed his class with a wellstruck drive which beat the outstretched hand of Collin to find the bottom corner of the net.
ROVERS SECURE FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON Fleetwood came to the Keepmoat having won two games on the bounce, while Doncaster Rovers were on the search for their first victory of the season. It was a quiet opening 15 minutes from both sides, however it was the away team who enjoyed the majority of the possession. Fleetwood had the first chance of the game, coming from a corner taken short. Stephen Jordan got on the end of a dangerous ball into the box and headed towards goal but it was over Stuckmann’s
crossbar. Against the run of play, Curtis Main won a free kick in a good position outside the Fleetwood area. Aaron Taylor-Sinclair delivered a wicked ball in towards goal and James Coppinger rose to get a vital flick towards goal. Chris Maxwell was beaten and Rovers took the lead. Minutes later Andy Williams broke towards goal. Heading his own ball forwards he was brought down by the Fleetwood man. There was an argument for a red card but the referee pulled out a yellow instead.
Enjoying their football, Paul Dickov’s men doubled their lead on 25 minutes. Andy Williams was in the thick of the action again and with the help of Main made it 2-0. The Rovers pair found themselves two on one with the Fleetwood defender, Williams squared the ball to Main who easily slotted home from ten yards. Fleetwood weren’t without their spells of possession but despite playing a nice passing game, Stuckmann remained untested at the end of the first half. Fleetwood almost pulled a goal back
DICKOV DELIGHTED
“I’m delighted and as much as I would have liked to have won more games, we’ve had 7 games in three weeks,” said Dickov. “There are too many draws and people keep going on about our home form but over 90 minutes we haven’t lost in eight competitive fixtures. “We’ve had one defeat in seven and I’m not going to shy away from the Port Vale game but we’re building to rectifying it. “It’s been a tough schedule for everyone. You look at the bench and how young they are and it’s a great experience for (Harry) Middleton and (Mitchell) Lund too.” Despite a crippling injury list, Dickov remained positive of bolstering his squad
ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline and had already moved quickly to bring in Ipswich Town winger Cameron Stewart. “We thought we were close to getting someone in today (Saturday) and it’s not happened but there could be one, possibly two, in before Tuesday,” he said. “With Tys (Nathan Tyson) and Harry (Forrester) being out we lacked a bit of pace and Cameron has got raw pace. “He only came in on Friday so it was difficult to start him but he’ll be a real asset for us.” Rovers host Burton Albion on Tuesday in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. Paul Dickov revelled in the aftermath of Saturday’s 2-0 win over Fleetwood Town and said that he hopes it draws to a close a bruising schedule in which several first teamers have been injured. Rovers, without Luke McCullough, Rob Jones, Harry Forrester, Nathan Tyson, Paul Keegan and Dany N’Guessan still managed to register their first league win of the campaign.
straight from the restart. Winning a free kick on the edge of the area, Jimmy Ryan stepped up and fired towards goal but Stuckmann made an excellent save low to his left. Jamie Proctor threatened the Rovers goal when he tried to find a way through but he was stopped in his tracks by Stuckmann who was quick off his line to make the save. Like the first half Fleetwood were enjoying spells of possession but it was Rovers who came close again. Finding some space, Williams weaved his way into the box before looking to slot the ball into the
bottom corner, however Maxwell got a hand to it conceding a corner. Against the run of play again Rovers broke, this time through Cedric Evina. Switching the ball to debutant Cameron Stewart, the Ipswich loanee found his way into the box before shooting at goal but his shot was well blocked. There was late drama as Conor McLaughlin kicked out at Williams but again the referee only produced a yellow card to the Fleetwood defender. It was all Rovers in the final ten minutes and the referee blew the final whistle giving Rovers all three points at the Keepmoat Stadium.

BLADES NEWS2015/16 FOUR WINS ON THE BOUNCE The Blades made it four wins on the bounce in Sky Bet League One with a thoroughly professional display against Swindon Town. Second half goals from Neill Collins and Billy Sharp secured the win, whilst the clean sheet was very welcome at a ground where United conceded ten last season. Reed took over from the suspended Baxter and Collins was fit to start as the Blades returned to the scene of the 5-5 play-off draw back in May. McEveley moved out to left back to accommodate Collins, who partnered Edgar in central defence. United won an early corner but the serious chances in the opening ten minutes came from Swindon. Robert clipped over the crossbar after linking up with Kasim and Turnbull’s run across the box saw Byrne fire straight at Howard. United’s first chance, on 15 minutes, was from the second phase of a corner but Basham could not get enough on the ball after Edgar headed down McEveley’s cross. Home goalkeeper Vigouroux palmed
over a 35-yard effort from Reed and from the resulting corner, on 24 minutes, Sammon hammered against the underside of the crossbar after the ball broke loose from Campbell-Ryce’s delivery. The action midway through the half was frantic as both sides looked for an opening. An acrobatic effort from Robert was off target and then Sammon deflected Sharp’s cross over the top before Branco went close with a deft header from an inswinging free-kick. Despite the game being open, the chances dried up as half-time approached, although a move between Sharp and Campbell-Ryce almost put the onrushing Reed in the clear. Early in the second half Robert was prominent for the hosts, he was stopped by Reed’s block and then a diving header was wide after he arrived late in the box. There was a nervous moment for Swindon on 57 minutes when goalkeeper Vigouroux looked to go around Sammon and his pass could have dropped anywhere but luck was with the custodian. The action remained
open, at both ends, Robert went close again with a shot on the turn on 63 minutes. A run from Campbell-Ryce put Swindon on the back foot and moments later a Woolford cross saw Sharp’s diving header deflected wide. The breakthrough finally arrived on 70 minutes and it was in front of the Blades fans. Reed delivered the corner, COLLINS rose highest and his header bounced over the goalkeeper, who appeared to be impeded by one of his defenders, before dropping into the corner of the net. Swindon’s fans were quiet and soon after they were stunned as United added a second. On a break, Woolford had the option of either of United’s strikers and he went right to SHARP, who lost his marker and slotted past Vigouroux before heading off to celebrate with the Blades fans. Vigouroux tried to get his own back as he clattered Sharp 30 yards from goal and was booked, whilst the Blades, in the remaining moments, were well organised in ensuring Swindon did not pressure Howard’s goal. United made a couple of late changes to run down the clock before the 1,117 Blades fans could celebrate on the trip home.
GAFFER’S SWINDON VERDICT Blades boss Nigel Adkins was understandably delighted, following Saturday’s deserved 2-0 victory over Swindon Town at the County Ground. Two goals from Neill Collins and Billy Sharp in the space of five second-half minutes saw United gain revenge on the Robins for the play-off defeat in May, to make it four Sky Bet League One wins on the spin. And the Gaffer was keen to heap all the praise on his players following the success in Wiltshire. He remarked: “We came with a game plan against a very good footballing side and full credit to the players, they performed excellently. “Our application was superb and we felt secure
throughout the game, we knew what Swindon were about, but Mark Howard only had one save of note to make in the whole game. “At the other end, we score from a set-piece and a counter attack, we could have easily scored more too, we created numerous chances on the break.”
It was a real team performance from the Blades against Mark Cooper’s Robins and Adkins was impressed by how his players snuffed out the likes of Nathan Byrne and Michael Smith, who caused United problems last term. The Blades boss added: “We defended excellently as a team and that started with the front
two. We were compact and Swindon had to work hard to go all the way round us. “We stopped Swindon dominating the game and in turn gave ourselves a chance to causing them problems when we had the opportunity to attack. “We do our homework and we felt our game plan would give us a chance of winning a tough away fixture and we are adapt our game to that of the opposition. “At Peterborough for example, we were expansive and it was an end-to-end game, which we also won, but we knew we had to be tighter against Swindon and it is encouraging that we can win games in different manners in what is a relentless division.”
OPEN TRIAL SESSIONS
Sheffield United Academy will be providing current U8s to 13s players with the opportunity to attend open trial sessions during the month of September. Sessions will take place in the Leeds/Wakefield area. Boys that are interested in attending should register their interest by asking parents to send an email to recruitment@ sufc.co.uk - please put ‘U8-13s Open Trial’ as the subject of the email and provide us with your name, date of birth and a brief outline of playing history. In order to be selected for a trial you must not be currently registered with another professional club. There are only a limited number of places available so not all players will be invited - we hope to run similar activities on a regular basis to give as many local players as possible
the chance to enjoy the Academy experience. The closing date for applications will be 5pm on Friday 4th September. Those that are successful will be contacted by Academy staff. We hope to hold more sessions for a variety of age groups later in the year. Some players may be offered the opportunity to register with the Academy following
the trial session; others may be invited to attend one of our assessment centres. However players and parents are reminded that obtaining a schoolboy contract is a huge challenge so as a priority players attending need to be realistic about the chances of success and use the opportunity to enjoy the facility and experience that the Academy offers.

OWLS NEWS2015/16 OWLS LOSE FIRST GAME AT HOME THIS SEASON Wednesday were beaten on home soil for the first time this season, going down to Middlesbrough 3-1. Adam Reach gave the Teessiders a late first half lead and three second half minutes proved key as the Owls equalised through Marco Matias only to see Boro go straight upfield with Diego Fabbrini on target. Christian Stuani then applied the final coasting of gloss near the end of a game that Middlesbrough more than edged. Overall, the visitors were good value for the points as they dominated the first 45 and despite Wednesday looking far more likely after the break, Boro stood firm for the win. The start to the game, though, suggested otherwise as the Owls were fast out of the traps and Lucas Joao was only denied by a timely block from Daniel Ayala inside two minutes. But Boro soon found their feet and almost took the lead themselves just after the quarter-hour mark. Reach delivered a telling ball to the back post and Ayala seemed
favourite to head home but Lewis Price pulled out a great save from the top drawer. The keeper came to the rescue again on 31 minutes, this time thwarting Reach with a low stop as the visitors pressed. But there was nothing Price could do four minutes before half time when he went head to head with Reach once more. The ball fell kindly to the wideman from a Boro corner and Reach drilled an unstoppable low drive into the Kop net. Carlos Carvalhal changed tack for the second half and brought on Atdhe Nuhiu but it was Alex Lopez who showed the first spark straight after the resumption. Twice the Spaniard went close, first with a long ranger that whistled wide and then from a free kick that Dimitrios Konstantopoulos acrobatically parried to safety. It was much better from Wednesday and they got their reward on 64 minutes. Jack Hunt sent in a super ball from the right that fell into the path
of Matias, whose shot from 12 yards sailed past Konstantopoulos with the aid of a deflection. But just as Wednesday’s tails were up, they were promptly undone by a costly sucker punch just three minutes later. Boro broke down the left through Fabbrini and the Italian advanced on goal to slide a measured side-footer past Price and into the bottom corner. Wednesday went all out for the second equaliser and a Tom Lees header went agonisingly wide before Konstantopoulos gathered a loose ball following a goalmouth scramble. The danger was the Owls getting caught on the counter, which is exactly what happened four minutes from time when substitute Stuani found space down the right and fired across Price and in. Wednesday: Price, Hutchinson (Semedo 21), Matias, Lees, Wiggins, Joao, Lee, Lopez (Sougou 76), Sasso, Hunt, Wallace (Nuhiu 46)
FORESTIERI LOOKS TO THE FUTURE Fernando Forestieri has high expectations for the next chapter of his hugely promising career at Hillsborough. The coveted forward has signed a four-year deal with Wednesday and is excited by the S6 project. The 25-year-old has flourished since moving to England with former club Watford, with his dazzling skills and attacking threat making him one of the most exciting operators in the division. He told swfc.co.uk: “I’m very happy because this is a big and exciting project at Sheffield Wednesday. “I spoke with the chairman, it is a big project and I know there are some very good players here, with a lot of quality so I’m very happy to be part of this
team. “We must focus on each game as they come and get closer to our big aim which is to go up.” Forestieri, who scored 20 goals from 48 league starts for the Hornets, continued: “I know the championship is very hard and we all need to believe in the project here at the club and enjoy it. “There is a lot to look forward to in the future
at this club and I’m happy to be here and be part of it. “I came here late on Friday but I have liked what I have seen, I like the city and I have seen the supporters in the stadium behind the team and now I want to get started. “I hope I can experience great things here and I’m looking forward to everything that is to come.”
BANNAN SIGNS FOR THE OWLS Sheffield Wednesday have signed talented midfielder Barry Bannan from Premier League side Crystal Palace. The 20-cap Scotland international joins the Owls on a permanent contract until the end of June 2016. Bannan will be eligible for Wednesday when the Championship resumes on Saturday week following the international break. At the start of his career, the playmaker joined the Celtic academy in 2002 before heading south of the border to undergo a successful trial with Aston Villa, earning a two-year contract. In the 2007/08 campaign, Bannan
bagged 13 goals from midfield as the Midlanders won the Premier Academy League title. Having sufficiently impressed in the engine room, he penned a two-year professional contract at Villa Park. The youngster debuted for Villa in the UEFA Cup in February 2009 and was loaned to Derby County to boost his experience. He scored on his debut for the Rams against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. A temporary switch to Blackpool followed and Bannan returned to Villa to make his Premiership debut in September 2010 before switching to Leeds United in another loan
THE SHAKEY
deal. After making 61 appearances for Villa - and amid interest from numerous suitors - Bannan signed a three-year contract with Crystal Palace for an undisclosed fee in September 2013, re-uniting with Ian Holloway, under whom he played at Blackpool. Bannan made 22 appearances for the Eagles before joining Bolton Wanderers on loan as part of the deal that took Lee ChungYong to Selhurst Park last season, featuring 16 times for the Trotters.
