SHEFFIELD’S WORLD CHAMPION KELL BROOK ANNOUNCES HOMETOWN TITLE DEFENCE “We know Brook is a tough fighter, very technical,” said Chaves. “He is a linear fighter, very frontal. He’s not a fast fighter. He is easily bothered by body punches, and that is one of our strengths. And I believe he has problems going backwards. We saw that in his fight against Shawn Porter. When Porter charged forward, Brook had trouble adjusting to that. But we know that he is a great fighter to face, and we are going to test his punching power too, because the opponents he chose so far have not been such great punchers as the ones I have faced lately. “I feel that my confidence grows with this challenge, knowing that I will have to face a champion like Kell Brook in his home country in England. This raises the stakes for me, going up there as an Argentine, and as a huge underdog. We know all the bad blood that exists between Argentina and England, and this will give me much more strength. I will be making history if I defeat an Englishman in his own country.” Tickets purchased on-line and through the Arena Ticket Hotline on 0114 256 56 56 are priced £44 - £165 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena Box Office are priced £42 – £157.50 including booking fee. Tickets are now on general sale in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk.

ALBERT SNODGRASS

Me and 146 mates broke the world record for the most people standing in a diagonal line last week. We were all staggered. There was a lovely mirror behind the counter at my local shop. I can see myself buying it. I hate my Scottish grandfather: for Christmas he was supposed to get me a Wii U, instead he got me a miniature sheep. “Why do you always treat me like a kid?” I asked my wife. “Good question,” she said, “but next time raise your hand before you ask me a question.” I saw a poster that said, “Breathing air in metropolitan areas can reduce your life expectancy by 2-3 years”. I would imagine that not breathing air would reduce it considerably more. It’s Palindrome race day, and I think I know which car will win. A Toyota. Selling a pair of jeans on ebay and the buyer asks if they’re pet and smoke free. I told her if the dog was able to walk around in jeans and smoke I wouldn’t need to sell stuff on ebay. My Girlfriend left me because of my obsession with abseiling. She said “It’s me, or abseiling” I had to let her down gently.. “Please scream as loud as you possibly can,” says the dentist to his patient. “Why should I do that?” “The waiting room’s full and the football’s on in ten minutes.” I went to the doctors today about my addiction to astrology. He said “What are the signs?”

Kell Brook will defend his IBF World Welterweight title against Diego Chaves at Sheffield Arena on Saturday 24th October, live on Sky Sports. Brook makes the third defence of his crown at his hometown fortress after ‘The Special One’ forced mandatory challenger Jo Jo Dan to retire after four rounds of his first defence there in March and then faced Frankie Gavin in his second defence in London in May, ending the Birmingham man’s challenge in the sixth round at The O2. Brook will be hunting another stoppage win over Chaves, but ‘La Joya’ will be out to spoil the party. The Argentine enters the clash on the back of a split draw with Timothy Bradley having also taken on Brandon Rios and Keith Thurman in his last four fights, and the former interim WBA champion brings a formidable knockout record to trouble the Sheffield star, with 19 of his 23 victims not lasting the pace with the 29 year old. “Chaves is a rough, tough, durable fighter who is very dangerous,” said Brook. “He’s bringing something new to the table. He’s coming off a draw to Tim Bradley, was ahead on the cards against Brandon Rios until he was disqualified and gave Keith Thurman a solid fight so we know what level he has mixed at and how good he is. “It’s been a busy year so far boxing Dan in March and Gavin in May - this will be my third defence in seven months but a busy fighter is a happy fighter and I’m very happy at the moment. I’m looking forward to the next challenge and I’m feeling sharp after my break. “I've seen some of Chaves' quotes and it's interesting to see he thinks he can walk me down and over-run me. I don't think some fighters realise how big I am and how sharp and accurate I punch and I'm looking to make a major statement against him. If he does what he promises it's going to be one hell of a fight. “I'm so excited about boxing in my home town of Sheffield again. London last time out was a great experience fighting in front of nearly 20,000 but I’m excited to be back there – it is my home. I’m looking to excite like I always do and light up Sheffield Arena on October 24.”

BROADFIELD PUB RAISES THE BAR FOR CANCER CHARITY ‘FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY’ A popular Sheffield pub is raising the bar for the regions dedicated cancer hospital by supporting the fundraising initiative, For One Night Only.

The Broadfield Pub on Abbeydale Road has chosen to raise funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity through various activities across the year in support of a former member of staff who is fighting cancer. Staff members at The Broadfield have proactively organised and held fundraising nights over the last few months including raffle and quiz nights, menu tasting events and dedicated pie nights all to support the work of Weston Park Hospital. Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire. Now into its second year, the charity initiative, For One Night Only, encourages clubs, pubs and bars alike to support the work of Weston Park Hospital by hosting a variety of

fundraising events throughout the year. Last year, For One Night Only raised over £15,000 and helped directly improve the lives of thousands of cancer patients receiving treatment across the region. As well as hosting sell-out charity events, The Broadfield’s very own Chef, Andy Burns is getting ready to climb Kilimanjaro in September to say thank you to the hospital for treating his good friend and former colleague, Ben Degg. In February 2014, after already overcoming a rare form of germ cell cancer in 2013, father of 2, Ben (32) was given the devastating diagnosis of secondary lung cancer. Despite undergoing further chemotherapy treatment at Weston Park Hospital, he was told that all conventional treatment options for his illness have been exhausted, leaving his future very uncertain. Since diagnosis and throughout treatment Ben, who worked on the bar at The Broadfield, has received the utmost support from his colleagues and friends, who have gone above and beyond to raise funds. Executive Head Chef, Andy Burns said, “Basically I want to take myself out of my comfort zone for a week to remind myself how much I appreciate my family, my comforts and my friends.” “Ben is a great guy and he and I worked closely during his time at The Broadfield -it is an honour to raise funds for the hospital where he received treatment.” Having set an initial target of £250, Andy has now raised over £400, which takes the total raised by The Broadfield, including a tea party hosted by Ben’s wife, Jen, well over the £2,000 mark. The venue has a final fundraiser planned for the 16th September in the form of a charity quiz night, which hopes to raise even more money ahead of Andy’s trek. Leah Griffiths, who works at The Broadfield said, “We are absolutely blown away by the

level of support received by staff members and customers; who have all played a big part in making each fundraiser such a success.” “Our main aim is to raise as much money as possible for the hospital where Ben received treatment and we’re excited to host even more events over the next year to keep adding to our total.” The charity needs to raise over £1.8 million this year to enable the funding of committed and new projects that will keep patients at the forefront of cancer treatment. Community Fundraiser Lucy King said, “Staff at The Broadfield Pub have been great supporters of the charity and are really setting an example to other venues who may be thinking of fundraising for a local cause.” “It’s great to see how creative they have been in support of our For One Night Only campaign and we are very grateful for all their efforts over the last few months.” “The charity relies on support from within the community and we’re hoping that with the success of last year’s campaign, more venues will choose to support the cancer charity this year.” To find out more about how to get involved in For One Night Only visit: www. foronenightonly.org.uk

THE SHIP INN – A FAMILY CREWED FOOD PUB RUN WITH FAMILIES IN MIND WITH EVERY MEAL! “A Family of Four Can Dine for £20 at The Ship.” - this is the proud claim of Kevin and Nicola Butler, Licensees of The Ship Inn for the last 3 years, which they run with the help of their three daughters, Shannon, Georgia and Niamh, together with niece Gemma, so theirs is a genuine family enterprise. Kevin continues, “Our 10 Ounce Sirloin or Ribeye steak meals are just £6.95 and all our meat is sourced from the best quality butchers.” With Kids meals from just £2.95 it’s easy to see that Kevin is right, a family of four; two adults and two kids, can dine for just £20 and for a limited time there are two extra special offers – a Free Pint with every adult meal plus a Free dessert with every Sunday Carvery. Sunday Carvery meals, which have become extremely popular at The Ship, are from only £5.95 and with Kids Carveries at only £3.95, that’s still under £20 for a family of four. And don’t forget the Free Pint offer still applies to adult’s meals on Sundays. The Free Pint offer is to celebrate the fact that The Ship Inn has just started to provide drinks from Carlsberg Tetley and both this and the free dessert offer run until the

last Sunday in September. Guest Cask Ales, plus wines and spirits, are also available at competitive prices. Kevin says “We always try to be fair with people and having raised our own kids, we know all too well how expensive it can be to treat your family to a good meal out, so we keep our prices as low as possible.” Before becoming “Mine Hosts” at The Ship Kevin and Nicola ran a café in Doncaster where they not only provided high quality family meals but also introduced a “Sunday Carvery at Home Service” where meals were delivered to local families. They have continued this service and many families in the locality of The Ship, in the picturesque village of Kilnhurst near Rotherham, appreciate the convenience of not having to cook their own Sunday lunch. Obviously, a trip to The Ship Inn is well worth a visit. It is only a 20 minute drive from just about anywhere in The Mercury region and is located right by the bridge which overlooks a very attractive stretch of the South Yorkshire Navigation Canal. Nearby there is a very rural stretch of the River Don and Thrybergh Country Park is just five minutes

drive away. The interior of The Ship Inn is furnished and decorated to a high standard and has a genuinely cosy atmosphere. Outside is an attractive Beer Garden with bench tables and a shelter, plus a very large car park, so they welcome coach parties. Food is served six days a week, Tuesdays to Saturdays, from 5.00pm till 8pm and Sundays from 12 until 4.00pm for Carveries. Now on Fridays they are also opening from 12 till 2.30 and then from 5pm until 8pm because the family is introducing Fish and Chip meals for only £4.95 each. Kevin says “We have been able to source proper Cod which we are preparing with our own home made batter and our meals include bread and butter and a cup of tea.” Whatever your family tastes in food you will find meals to your liking, and at prices that will not blow the family budget. Remember to visit before these great offers run out – it’s not often you’re offered a free pint! The Ship Inn On the Bridge at Kilnhurst Rotherham S64 5TA Tel: 01709 580044

CALLING ALL FANS OF THE 70s - WIN SHORTLIST ANNOUNCED FOR MERCURY/ TICKETS FOR THE SOLID GOLD 70s SHOW STONES CLUBLAND AWARDS VOTING Calling all retro music fans. If you like 70s music, you’ll love this as The Solid Gold 70s Show appears at Penistone Paramount on Friday 9th October. Reviving the golden age of pop, the brand-new stage show features a multi-talented cast performing glamrock greats, disco hits, power ballads and party anthems from Sweet, T Rex, Queen, Elton John, 10CC, David Essex, Suzi Quatro, David Cassidy, ELO, The Carpenters, Osmonds, Bay City Rollers, ABBA and more. Backed by a band whose members have performed with Mike Oldfield, Asia and Ultravox, the production boasts a superb musical pedigree, says show producer Michael Taylor. “Take a step back to a time,” says Michael. “Back to when 7.30pm on a Thursday night could mean only one thing – TV’s tuned into BBC1 and families gathered together to watch Top of the Pops.” Each week the bands and singers appearing on this most iconic show of the Seventies played out a not-to-be missed battle to be the week’s most outrageously dressed guest, presenting the most outlandishly choreographed performance. presenting themselves as the most swoon-inducing heartthrob. Michael, whose other hit touring shows include the Magic of Motown and Thank You for the Music, says that Solid Gold 70s is the most fun production on his company’s 20-show roster. “If, like me,” he says, “you have fond memories of Pans People and Eurovision, Luke Skywalker and Saturday Night Fever, Danny and Sandy. . . Dastardly and Muttley, this is the show for you. “With the cast bursting into the spotlight like an explosion-in-a-paintshop, we guarantee theatregoers the most colourful, top of the pops time of their lives.”

Audiences are invited to dress the part - platforms, flares, cat suits, tank tops and boob tubes. Air guitars are welcome and there is plenty of room for Choppers and Space Hoppers in the car park.

SOLID GOLD 70s SHOW Friday 9th October 2015 - 7.30pm Penistone Paramount Shrewsbury Road, Penistone, Sheffield, S36 6DY ~ Tickets: £20, £22 BoxOffice: 01226 767532 www.penistoneparamount.co.uk Poptastic smash hit stage show Solid Gold 70s is coming to town and we have teamed up with the promoters of the production to offer Mercury lucky readers/listeners the chance to win a pair of tickets to see the hit-packed spectacular. Simply answer the following question to be in with a chance of seeing the concert show of the year for free. Which 70s band released the 1972 hit ‘Crazy Horses’? Send you entry with a daytime telephone number to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk or 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG before Friday 18th October.

CAR BUYING & KIDS BUYING A USED CAR Who decides what car to buy in your household? According to a recent Auto Trader Survey, kids influence the decision in almost 40% of households nationwide! More than three quarters of parents (78%) claim that having kids forced them to buy a new car. And nearly four in ten (37%) say that children go on to influence decisions to buy their next car. These were the key finding of research carried out for Auto Trader, the UK’s largest digital automotive marketplace, in August, pooling the views of 1,000 parents and children aged between 5 and 11. The aims were to look at what parents and children looked for in their perfect family car – and to what extent children influenced their parents’ buying decision. Findings pointed to a number of differences in the success of pester power. More than half of Londoners, for example (55%), said they were likely to be influenced by their children, compared with just 24% in the North East. When it comes to the sexes, the research suggests Dads should probably be the target of lobbying. 39% of Dads said they were open to influence compared with 33% of Mums. “A substantial amount of research has been done looking at how the decision of the car buyer can be influenced and at what stage in the buying journey,” commented Nathan Coe of Auto Trader, “but few have really considered the role that children play, or the influence of pester power. If one of the kids doesn’t like the shape or colour of your next car, or it doesn’t come with plug-in for an i-Pad, then you’d better be prepared for some serious pestering!” Overall, colour is the most common feature for successful persuasion by children (26% influenced their parents’ choice of colour). Children are most likely to push for red (28%), followed by blue (21%), black (14%) and pink (13%). Perhaps unsurprisingly boys tend to favour red cars (28% v 23%) and girls preferred pink (26% v 1%). However, only 2% said they’d prefer a white car, despite white being the most popular new car colour, according to SMMT new car sales data. Children also influenced their parents in terms of the comfort (13%), size (12%), design (12%) and entertainment (9%) of their new car. Safety however - top of the list of priorities for parents (27%) - was one area where parents tend to go it alone. After safety, parents were most concerned with the size and space of the new car they were buying so they could get extra boot space or more seats (25%), how

comfortable it would be (23%) and how reliable (19%) – entertainment systems were only considered important by 2% of parents. For children however, their top ten wish list in a family car included glamour features like turbo buttons, ejector seats and flame filled exhausts, perhaps unsurprisingly alongside entertainment systems. Coe continues: “Car retailers are becoming more aware of the need to cater for children on the forecourt, both in terms of providing entertainment for them whilst their parents are looking at cars, and actively pointing out features that they would be interested in, like in-car entertainment systems. As the technical specifications on new cars continues to advance, kids will only become more interested in the car they are transported about in.” Are Mums or Dads a better driver? Overall, more children in the survey pointed to their Dads (54%). However when it comes to dropping off at the school gates, Mums rule the playground, as 55% voted for them compared to 42% who said they’d prefer their Dad to drop them off. More than two thirds (79%) of parents would claim they are better drivers compared to their partner. When asked to consider their favourite superhero car, children went mad for the Batmobile. It topped the chart for all ages from 5 through to 11, other than for kids aged six year - they chose Lightning McQueen from the Cars’ films.

As September gets under way, the new registration means there are a lot of bargains out there in the used market. Below we list some advice and tps to help make sure the car you buy will be a bargain - not a burden!

1. WHAT TO BUY Review your budget and work out what you can afford and what you can get for that price. Do your research by checking adverts on websites and magazines to get an idea of the market. If you have a specific model in mind, you can estimate prices on websites like What Car? or Parkers. Cars with bigger engines may seem relatively cheap, but bear in mind the running costs (especially fuel, tax and insurance) may be higher. 2. BUYING FROM A DEALER Buying a car from a dealer may cost more but gives legal protection under the Sale of Goods Act. This means the car must match the description given by the seller. It should also be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and roadworthy. Selling a car that’s not fit for the road is a criminal offence. If you find there was a problem with the car when you bought it, you can ask the dealer for your money back or a repair. Choose your dealer carefully - ask people you know for recommendations. Check the dealer for a trade association sign. If the business is a member, they have to follow a code of practice. If you’re not sure if the sign is genuine, you can check their membership with the trade association 3. BUYING PRIVATELY There are various ways you can buy a car privately - online, at an auction or through an advert in a newspaper. You’ll probably be able to get a cheaper price but you won’t be protected by the Sale of Goods Act. However, the car still has to be “as described” so ask plenty of questions about its condition and get the answers in writing. If the car turns out to have a fault, you’ll need to be able to challenge the seller’s description to get your money back. 4. WHEN YOU SEE THE CAR If the seller offers a viewing anywhere other than their home, think twice. It means you might not be sure of where he or she lives if there’s a problem. Don’t feel under pressure to make a quick decision. It’s important to check the car thoroughly. Take a look through the 10 top tips for checking a used car from consumer group Which? or use the checklist provided by the AA.If you don’t know much about cars, take someone who does. If you’re still not sure,

consider getting an independent report - though it may be expensive. Keep copies of any advertisement or description of the car in case it’s needed at a later date Do not agree or sign anything unless you are absolutely sure you want to go ahead with it Beware of signing any document that states you have examined the car and found it satisfactory in all respects 8. IF THINGS GO WRONG If the car has a fault which you were told about before you bought it you might not be able to claim, unless the problem is far worse than described It’s also difficult to make a case against the seller for problems that would have been obvious before buying - like a large dent or rust on the bodywork. However, if you notice the fault soon after buying the car and you haven’t been told about it, you could claim a full or partial refund from the seller.

It’s that time of year again; the youngsters are going back to school, the holidays are over, and the local fisheries start to become deserted as the less committed angler puts away the rods until next year…. Selfishly, I love it. The banks are much quieter, and so my options are much wider as I am able to target fish from venues I would normally avoid for fear of a bankside trample, and my mind gets to work considering new pastures, and new clubs or venues for next year. Much of my preparation starts now, and despite having to wear a woolly hat, I’ll still be on the banks, in all weathers, trying to catch something. Why I have I considered winter fishing this week? I went out yesterday, to a park lake that normally sees a few anglers on the bank, and went early to try and secure a reasonable spot. The damp, cold, morning darkness wasn’t particularly inviting, but I get one day a week to fish, so it was then or not at all. I arrived, quickly unloaded the van, and then walked onto the perimeter to find….emptiness! Not a single angler presented on the banks, and although the darkness had faded somewhat, foreboding clouds foretold of a dismal day, and obviously those with any sense had seen fit to stay in bed. I could fish wherever I wanted! The day was bitterly cold as the stiff breeze persisted throughout, and a distinct lack of fish was the only thing which took the shine off a peaceful few hours, but at least I was out… Brr!

So it will continue until April; the banks will be for the most part deserted, and although the fishing may be harder, my targets will change and I hope to enjoy many happy hours by the river or lake in pursuit of ‘winter’ species. There is so much to look forward to; chub on breadflake from frosted rivers, big pike from reservoirs, grayling from small streams…the list goes on! I can’t wait… (even if I do have to wear a fluffy ‘onesie’ under my salopettes and jacket to stay warm!) Another thing which struck me again this week, is the proliferation of idiots on social media, and I’m sure it is related to the amount of anglers who put their rods away for summer. An angler has recently caught a second 60lb UK carp, an enviable achievement indeed, and has been subjected to criticism from an unexpected source. I don’t personally know the angler who has had great success, but I’m pleased for him, it’s something I could only wish for in my dreams, and neither do I know the journalist who has slated the capture, but it smacks only of petty jealousy and bad manners. I’ve read the exchanges; they are unpleasant to say the least, and completely uncalled for. The only positive is that the vast majority of anglers have rounded upon the instigator of such diatribe, and recognised his comments for what they are; small minded and disingenuous. Sadly however, it’s not confined to this particular capture, I’ve noticed it time and again from so called anglers who seek to decry the achievements of others. I have no idea why; personally, I often find myself admiring pictures of superb fish caught by others which are posted online, and if especially engaging, will even add a complimentary comment because I am genuinely pleased for them. It never even enters my thoughts to be derogatory or to slur them, so why must others? What has changed to make anglers so unpleasant towards each other? In my youth, anglers were a friendly bunch, keen to share advice, help those new to the sport, and keen to congratulate others; not so nowadays…. I can’t help but wonder when and why the magic was lost, but I do know I don’t think it’s good for angling… Now, where’s my ‘onesie’?

Premier Division With midweek games at a premium AFC Penistone picked up their first win of the season at home against last seasons champions Swinton Athletic 3-2, goals from Jack Moore, Brad Kemp and Tim Council gave them victory. Swinton scorers were Justin Greenwood and Andy Billups. AFC Penistone followed up with a 1-1 away at Wickersley. Another goal from Jack Moore was countered by Kallum Nix. The goals were spread round with another from Joe Rowland, which were added to by Andy Jones, Jermaine Atkins, Jay McFadzean, Reece Blake and Glynn Cotton. Oughtibridge’s lone scorer was Robinson. Two other teams who have started the season well are unbeaten Millmoor Juniors who met Frecheville CAFC and recorded their third victory of the campaign and inflicted Frecheville CAFC’s first defeat with a 4-2 win, goals scored by Michael Clarke 2, Danny Kebeya and Lebrun Mbeka. This was preceded in Frechevilles case with a 4-2 home victory over Handsworth Parramore Reserves by the same score. A hat-trick by Lawrence and a single by Duggan for Frecheville was countered by goals for Ryan Lee and Luke Fletcher for Handsworth. Another team with a view to the top are Houghton Main who have also got off to a good start with three wins out of four. They won 3-2 midweek against Wickersley, a brace from Adam Stead and one from Ryan Beading with Jordan Thomas and Callum Nix on the scoresheet for Wickersley. After promotion last season North Gawber Colliery are settling down just behind the leading pack and consolidated with a midweek victory at Chaucer School against Jubilee Sports 2-0, goals scored by Welford and Jack Bedford. One team who are finding the going tough this campaign are Athersley Recreation Reserves who have registered four straight defeats with two in the last week by the same scoreline. They lost 2-0 midweek away to Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves, goalscorers for Stocksbridge were Rhodes and Watheq and at home to Houghton Main. Elsewhere this week was a resounding win by Thorpe Hesley; 3-0 at Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves with

Division One With a lot of inconsistency in the division and only four teams unbeaten this season. The pacesetters Denaby United recorded their third victory of the campaign with a 3-1 win over Kingstone United, with a hat-trick from Ellor. Caribbean are still 100%, after recording a resounding home win 6-2 against Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. Caribbean’s goalscorers were Ramsey 2, Holmes 2, Parwana and Shelley, Red Rose scorers were Zac Goff and Fleming Wright. Alarm bells must be sounded in defence for Red Rose as they have conceded 18 goals in 4 games with another midweek defeat, this time at home 6-1 to Kingstone United, Rose’s goalscorer Grant. Other unbeaten teams are Wombwell Main, who didn’t play and Denaby Main JFC who had two victories in the week; midweek success at Davy by 2-0 and a weekend win at South Kirkby Colliery by 2-1 margin. After a 2-1 defeat by Byron House at AFC Dronfield. The goal for Byron was scored by Wayne and it was followed by two teams picking up their first point of the season when Byron House drew 2-2 at home to Sheffield Bankers. Another team seeming to be struggling to get to grips with the new campaign are Millmoor Juniors Reserves, who recorded their third defeat and are bottom of the table, a three one home defeat to High Green Villa the scoreline. Goalscorer for Millmoor was Liam Kennedy, High Green scorers were Fogarty, Young, Tunnard giving High Green a mid-table record of two wins and two defeats. Another team who have started well are Silkstone United, who inflicted South Kirkby Colliery’s second defeat of the week - 5-1 at home. A hat-trick by Jamie Dixon and a brace for Wayne Hughes providing the goals for Silkstone. Division Two Newcomers seem to be theme in Division Two with the top five positions held by teams who are new entrants to the League this campaign. Brinsworth Whitehill are top of the table recording two resounding wins in the week. There was the comprehensive 8-3 home demolition of New Bohemians, with four goals from Greg Mason, Josh Brew with a hat-trick and a single from Nathan Corker. This was followed by a 7-1 away win at Bawtry Town at the Keep Moat Athletic Stadium, two more goals from Greg Mason was added to by Joe Morris, Lee Hill, Jack Kitchen 2 and Adam Kinsella. Keeping up the pressure at the top are Grimethorpe Sports, but they suffered a set-back in midweek with a 0-2 defeat to Swallownest FC Reserves, who themselves are new after stepping up from the U21 division last season. Grimethorpe bounded back at the weekend with a resounding 5-1 home win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves, a hattrick from Tony Bennett, Steve Bennet and Jack Foster completed the scoring for Grimethorpe with Worsbrough goal from Dan Beech. This was Worsbrough third defeat from four following a midweek loss to Houghton Main Reserves at home by 3-2. Houghton scorers being Josh Care 2 and Shane Redford. Houghton Main consolidated mid-table with a weekend win at Kiveton Park 1-0. The other newcomer in third place are Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves who had a good 3-2 home win over North Gawber Colliery Reserves. Goalsscorers for Hemsworth included a brace from Lee Carrington and a Nigel Beardow strike. North Gawber followed the defeat with a 3-1 away win at Maltby Main Reserves. Lewis Williams scored a hattrick for North Gawber. Treeton Terriers are just behind Swallownest in the league and claimed a excellent midweek win at Kiveton Park by 4-1; a hat-trick by William Hilbert and a single by Joe Austin the goalscorers for Treeton, Kiveton Park scorer was Daniel Stewart. Treeton followed this up with a 3-2 win at home to Sheffield Lane Top, who are themselves just outside the bottom three. Treeton’s goals were scored by same player Kane Doughty (3). New Bohemians bounced back from the previous heavy defeat to Brinsworth to inflict the first defeat of Swallownest FC Reserves by 4-1, New Bohemian scorers were Ryan Taff 2 and Ryan Beck 2. Sheffield Lane Top tasted victory for the first time this campaign with a 3-1 victory at Maltby Main Reserves.

AN HONOUR TO BE CAPTAIN VADIS RELISHING MILLERS CHALLENGE Rotherham United midfielder Lee Frecklington says it is a privilege to have been awarded the armband at AESSEAL New York Stadium following his appointment as club captain last week. The Millers’ longest-serving player was delighted at being made skipper and ranks it highly amongst his successes with the club. “It’s obviously a huge privilege and a nice achievement to cap off the three years that I’ve had here,” he told www. themillers.co.uk “To be captain of any football club is a great honour. It means you’re thought of

highly by the people there and that’s a nice personal achievement.” Frecklington has previously skippered the Millers when called upon and admits he enjoys the responsibility and hopes his commitment to the cause will serve him well as he leads the team this season. “When Craig [Morgan] was here and he was injured I had the armband and I did enjoy it so it’s nice to get it on a permanent basis. “I think I’m a lead by example type captain. I’m not a shouter and a screamer and hopefully people can look at my attitude and how I train every day and it can rub off on everybody.”

New Millers’ acquisition Vadis OdjidjaOfoe says he will be giving everything he has to help his new club following his loan switch from Norwich City on transfer deadline day. The exciting midfielder completed a last minute loan move to AESSEAL New York Stadium on Tuesday alongside fellow Canary and was thrilled to have got the deal done in time. “It was proposed to me to come and get some game time and come and help the club and I was really keen to,” he enthused. “I played here two weeks ago in the cup and I saw the atmosphere in the stadium and how great the fans were that night so I hope they continue to support us that way and stay behind us through all the games. “I think it was 10 minutes before the end that we sent the papers so it was really close but as soon as we got the call me and Tony were very happy and we came here immediately to see the stadium and get welcomed by the gaffer.” The Belgian international trained with his new teammates for the first time on Thursday but was alongside a familiar face in Tony Andreu who also joined up with the Millers for the first time. “I think it’s nice to have somebody around that you know. Obviously it’s not easy to come into a dressing room where everybody has been really close together for a long time and you’re new, but everyone is very nice to us and are helping us a lot to settle in. “The training game today was really helpful in us getting to know each other and

we have to bond, especially on the pitch because that’s really important.” The 26-year-old played an instrumental role against the Millers when his Norwich City side visited AESSEAL New York Stadium in the Capital One Cup last month, turning in a display that left Steve Evans in awe of his display. “It’s nice when the coach has confidence in you and believes in you. I’m very happy to be here and I’m hoping to put in good performances so that he and the fans

continue to have the same idea. I will try my best to help and just give every game 100 percent. “It’s good that now we have some time off to train together and get to know each other. Then next week we start at Charlton and hopefully there will be a space for me in the starting 11 and I can help the team but I will always try my best whatever the gaffer says and if he needs me I will always be ready.”

POSITIVE WEEK COMES TO A HALT AT LEAGUE LEADERS On an overcast day in Kent in front of 234 travelling fans, Rovers defended an attacking Gillingham side for well over the first 45 minutes before going down 1-0 to a controversial Gillingham goal from home substitute Jake Hessenthaler. The initial pressure came from the Gills with efforts from Bradley Dack, Emmanuel Osadebe and Josh Wright firing powerful shots at Thorsten Stuckmann’s goal. It was the fans behind the goal that were more in danger than the back of the net though as the first 15 minutes remained fairly uneventful.

Rovers had a shout for a penalty on 15 minutes as Aaron Taylor-Sinclair played a free kick deep into the box. As Andy Williams jumped he seemed to be pushed in the back but the Rovers shouts fell on deaf ears as referee Sargison waved play on. Dack tried desperately to break the deadlock but his handful of efforts failed to test Stuckmann in the Rovers goal. Richard Chaplow worked the midfield well and on 19 minutes his clever ball through to Cedric Evina nearly saw Rovers take the lead but Evina’s shot come cross couldn’t find Curtis Main and

the scores remained level. Evina, Taylor-Sinclair and Williams played some brilliant stuff down the left and Rovers had another shout for a penalty turned down after Taylor-Sinclair was felled. Williams and Main linked up well playing some neat one-touch stuff throughout the first half but the sides went in even. The final effort of the half went to Oscar Gobern on his Rovers debut but the big man fired wide under pressure from 10 yards. As was the case in the first half, the hosts started stronger but Rovers could’ve had

DICKOV SACKED BY ROVERS David Blunt, Chairman of Doncaster Rovers Football Club has this week confirmed that Paul Dickov has left his position as first team manager based on performance to date. The Board are ambitious for a top six finish and that is, and will remain their aim. The club will now seek applications for the post on a permanent basis. The club will not rush into making any decision, the recruitment process will be thorough and they will ensure that they appoint the strongest candidate for the position.

From today Rob Jones will take charge of first team affairs on a temporary basis. The club has full confidence in Rob as they now look forward to a tough game against Walsall this weekend. The Board of Directors would like to take this opportunity to thank Paul Dickov for his efforts on and off the pitch, and wish him well for the future. The club promise to update the supporters on the recruitment process on a regular basis through their official communication channels.

a penalty on 53 minutes when Main was bundled in the box and it seemed it was just the referee who thought nothing of it. Mitchell Lund linked up well with Chaplow on 58 minutes, but the midfield man couldn’t get his shot away clearly and he pulled it just wide of the post. A minute later the ball fell to Williams who turned and shot but his left footed effort couldn’t beat the outstretched arms of opposing ‘keeper Stuart Nelson. Wright’s shot on the hour mark left Stuckmann scrambling across his goal but Rovers defended another corner well and the score remained 0-0. Six minutes after coming on for Houghton, Jake Hessenthaler gave the hosts the lead (66) in somewhat controversial circumstances. In what was a huge goalmouth scramble after a long range effort from the substitute, the assistant referee waved his flag and gave a goal. The Rovers players couldn’t

believe it especially Andy Butler as he claimed Lund had cleared the ball off the line not once but twice. Rovers pushed for the equaliser but couldn’t find a way past Nelson who was given the sponsors man of the match award! Sub Cameron Stewart had a great effort saved as he collected the ball and ran his way through the middle of the park. He fired his shot from 25 yards worked Nelson but not quite enough. Stuckmann again pulled off some good saves including one at full stretch from Luke Norris on 80 minutes and Lund linked up well with Stewart following a spectacular 40 yard pass. The substitute stretching as his effort went over the Gillingham bar. The equaliser proved elusive the home side rose to the top of the league with the 3 points.

BLADES NEWS2015/16 UNDER 21S SUCCESS AT WATFORD Diego De Girolamo netted a firsthalf double as United returned to winning ways in the Professional Development League, with a deserved success over Watford at Vicarage Road on Monday night. De Girolamo took his chances to put the Blades in the ascendency and it was a lead Chris Morgan’s side never looked

like relinquishing as Ryan Flynn and Terry Kennedy both completed 90 minutes against Harry Kewell’s young Hornets. The home side started positively though and the first chance fell to Byers in the fourth minute, but Eastwood was equal to his longrange strike, tipping the ball round the post. But in the 15th minute United caught the Hornets cold to

opening the scoring, a through ball saw DE GIROLAMO get in behind the home rearguard and he fired past Gilmartin having showed good strength to hold off the attentions of Rowan. And five minutes later, the visitors doubled the advantage. A defence splitting pass from Wright freed Phillips who put an inviting ball across goal and DE GIROLAMO was in the right place at the right time to apply the finishing touch. The home side were shell-shocked and De Girolamo was a live threat as he chased his hat-trick and a third goal for the Blades, whilst at the other end Lewis shot inches wide having cut inside from the left. In Watford’s next attack Mensah and Folivi combined before the latter shot straight at Eastwood from a promising position.

But it was United who came even closer to another goal in the last action of the half, only for Gilmartin to pull off the save of the game to deny Wright from the edge of the area. The second-half was a quieter affair but just after the hour; only a timely intervention from Gilmartin prevented Flynn from getting his name on the scoresheet. Watford were reduced to 10 men in the 81st minute when skipper Byers was given his marching orders for a second yellow card following a cynical foul to prevent a swift United break. In the final moments of the game the impressive Eastwood made sure of a clean sheet when he parried an effort wide from long-range. Blades: Eastwood, Phillips, Banton, Whiteman, Kennedy, Evans, Flynn, Dimaio, Wright (Gordon 78), De Girolamo (Heh 86), McDonagh (Hamilton 78).

BLADES TRIAL BEAT THE QUEUE The Club is trialling a new system that involves specially designated stewards, as well as other measures, to ease ticket office queues in the build-up to kick-off on match days. From this Saturday’s Bury game, four stewards wearing easily identifiable bibs will be earmarked to help fans buying or collecting match day tickets as well as those who have queries with their season ticket cards. Sheffield United Operations Director Dave McCarthy said: “We are trialling a new system which will help reduce queues outside the ticket office on match days. We want to make sure fans get more match for their money and not miss any of the opening minutes. “There will be four specially designated stewards to help the fans and make sure they are in the correct queue. We are confident it will make a difference, shorten queues and get fans served and into the ground sooner.” The Club will have stewards asking any fans joining the back of the ticket queue outside the South Stand ticket office why they are queuing and then direct those fans to the correct location. - Fans wanting only tickets for that day’s game will stay in the main ticket office queue. - Fans collecting tickets that they have preordered will be directed to a gazebo, situated between the Platinum Suite entrance and Legends of the Lane Museum, which will be for ticket collections only. The steward outside current Ticket

Collections window will also guide people to the new collection point. - Blades fans wanting to make ticket purchases for Blades away matches will be directed to what is the current ‘ticket collection point’ outside the Promotions office (it will have new branding). This facility will take cash or cards and be for away ticket purchases only. - Fans with a ticket problem (such as a problem gaining access with their season ticket card) will be directed to a steward who will be overseeing the first ticketing desk in the ticket office. Fans are reminded that the quickest and cheapest way to secure their seat is always to book in advance where possible. There is a discounted price for all tickets purchased in advance of the match day and supporters can book online at www. sufc.talent-sport.co.uk in person or over the telephone on the new local rate telephone number 0114 253 7200. Fans buying before 4pm on the Wednesday prior to a Saturday home game or Friday before a Tuesday night game will receive their tickets in the post avoiding any match day queues at the ground. Another way to save time and money is to become a Member. As well as additional discounts you can book online right up to kick off, activating your Membership card which will automatically enable entry through the turnstiles.

OWLS NEWS2015/16 BANNAN PURSUES A FELLOW OWL FIRST TEAM SHIRT NEEDS YOUR HELP The prospect of playing regular first team football was the big lure for Barry Bannan joining the Owls revolution. The playmaker signed for Wednesday in the late stages of the summer transfer window from Premier League side Crystal Palace. And Bannan told swfc. co.uk that donning a starting shirt is high on his Hillsborough agenda: “I want to play football on a regular basis and this is where I want to do it. Wednesday is a massive club and I had

no hesitation in joining. “There was interest from other clubs but there is something about this one. The new owner is clearly ambitious and it was important for me to hear from the manager that he likes to play football the right way, which suits my game perfectly. “I like to think I am a technical player but I like a battle as well. “There is competition for places, which I relish, and it is up to me to perform and play as well as I can to try and get that shirt.” Bannan also emphasised that he has no qualms in

exchanging the top tier for the Championship as he feels the Owls are heading only in one direction. He added: “Everybody wants to play in the Premier League. My game time at Palace was limited so this move is brilliant for me because Wednesday are a club on the up. “There are not too many clubs in the Championship with the real potential to get to the highest level and stay there but Sheffield Wednesday certainly tick the boxes.”

A Sheffield Wednesday supporter is putting his charity walk fate in the hands of football fans and needs our help! Steve Milne, from Chapeltown, is taking part in the Frontline Walk in October. This involves a walk along 100km of the Western Front, starting at the Lochnagar Crater in northern France on 7 October and finishing four days later at the Menin Gate, in Belgium. Where do we come in? Well, the keen Wednesdayite wants to wear his Owls shirt while taking part in the challenge! In his quest to raise as much as possible for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, there is a chance he may have to wear the shirt of our city rivals, Sheffield United instead. The 51-year-old has set up two rival fundraising pages – one for the

Blades and one for the Owls! Whichever page raises the most will determine which shirt he will wear for the 100km walk. Joiner Steve, who was a member of the Territorial Army for more than 20 years, said: “I will be doing this to remember the local lads who stepped up and fought for their country during World War One. “To help me raise funds I am starting a bidding war between Owls and Blades supporters. “I will be doing the walk wearing either a Sheffield Wednesday or a Sheffield United shirt. “I will wear the shirt of the team with the most donations and have set up two rival fundraising pages. “Being a Sheffield Wednesday supporter, I really do not want to walk through France and Belgium wearing a

THE SHAKEY

Sheffield United shirt. It will be a real struggle to walk that far in it!” During the walk Steve will remember the hundreds of men, many from Sheffield, from the Sheffield Pals Battalion who died at the Battle of the Somme. Many of the men who fought in the conflict went through their basic training at Bramall Lane. Steve said: “I left the TA about ten years ago and since then I’ve been doing a lot for charity. “This is my way of giving something back and remember those who have given their lives.” To help ensure Steve wears his beloved Owls shirt, visit www. justgiving.com/ sheffieldwednesday or text SWED60 and the amount you wish to donate (e.g. £1) to 700 70.
