My grandad has the heart of a lion and a lifetime ban from Edinburgh zoo. I just sprayed a mosquito with mosquito repellent, now he’ll never have any friends. I was at my Mum’s when she said, “Albert, you’re 29 years old now. When are you going to find a decent girl, one with morals - not the usual tarts you seem to attract - and settle down.” It was at this point my girlfriend left the room in tears.

I went to a fancy dress competition before dressed as Winston Churchill. I thought my costume was great, I had the hat, the suit, the bow tie, everything! When I asked them whether I’d won, they said I was close, but no cigar. As I laid on the operating table, I asked the doctor, “How long do you think I’ll be in hospital?” “If all goes well, about a week. If not, about 45 minutes.” I knocked at my neighbour’s door earlier and said, “I’m afraid I’ve just run your cat over mate.” He said, “You did that on purpose! You’ve had it for my cat since it did it’s business in your garden last week!” “Don’t be stupid,” I replied. “It was an accident.” “Yeah, sure it was!” he replied. “Look at the state of my bloody fence.”

Let Me Entertain You... (2 HOUR SHOW) 50s & 60s GOLDEN OLDIES LET ME SING ALL YOUR FAVOURITES Fresh energies show up this week with Saturn newly in Sagittarius acting as a spur to further study or travel. Relationships however take priority from midweek as the Sun eases into Libra, encouraging diplomacy and co-operation. Call me now for more news and astral advice…

With Saturn now out of Scorpio, soon you can feel greater ease around financial matters. Pleasingly as the Sun sparks into your sign midweek, you’ll be back in control of the reins and keen to get moving on plans that have been simmering on the backburner. Call for more...

The Sun’s move into Libra from midweek can be a call to bring your everyday routines back into balance, especially if you’ve been through a very hectic period. Pacing yourself and abandoning time-wasting or unfulfilling activities can help. Call your prediction line for more advice…

A Sun Saturn link suggests you will need to apply a balanced view of your money situation, which seems necessary if you’re to get things sorted to your satisfaction. However, the cosmos also encourages you to enjoy more “you time”. Call now for your in-depth forecast…

You might feel you’re being judged by others and that you’re falling short of their assessment. This may be down to Saturn being back in Sagittarius where it can seem to make you more aware of your shortcomings. However, be kind and gentle to yourself. Call for more advice…

While Monday’s Quarter Moon can put you in an edgy situation, the solution could change your outlook for the better. Meanwhile, your social life looks more sparkly from Wednesday, despite the uncertainties of the continuing Mercury retrograde. Call me now for more news and advice…

The focus shifts as the Sun enters Libra, where it can encourage you to enjoy a respite when possible, along with a chance to unwind. In practice, this might mean taking time out to do your own thing - even if only for an hour a day. Call me now for more news and astral advice…

If you can’t see eye-to-eye with someone, put yourself in their shoes for a better understanding of their motives. However, if you’re keen to reach an agreement then attempt to do so early in the week, otherwise a stubborn mode could prevent reconciliation. Call for more astral advice…

Mercury continues its retrograde phase which can be the reason you’re experiencing a degree of frustration in your daily affairs. However, from midweek you’ll likely find it easier to say the right things even in the midst of trying situations, in a way which could save the day. Call for more…

Although the Quarter Moon can throw light on a conflict between you and your family, discussion might highlight a matter that’s even more urgent. Nevertheless, the Sun’s move into Libra can make it easier to find a solution suitable to all. Call now for your in-depth forecast…

A developing Sun Saturn link can see you keen to move in new circles, particularly as a way to expand your social horizons. But then you might find other responsibilities clash with your preferred schedule, leaving you in a difficult position. Call me now for your in-depth forecast…

Tensions can be a part of the picture this week. And, with Mercury continuing its retro phase this might only add to the frustration. However, Jupiter’s growing in Virgo suggests friends or perhaps co-workers may rally round and be willing to help out where possible. Call for more…

TUC CONGRESS CALLS FOR CARE HOME REFORM A bold call has been made for radical reform of the funding of care homes across the UK, at this week’s TUC Congress Leading the motion, Congress President Justin Bowden of the GMB, demanded a framework of fair funding for Social Care be put in place to protect the elderly and vulnerable in society. Below is the speech he delivered. “A time bomb is ticking under the system of care for our elderly and vulnerable, the product of chronic underfunding and society’s failure to face up to its responsibilities to those - who paid tax and national insurance all their lives - in their times of need. There is something is badly wrong with this society’s priorities when the important job of stacking shelves in a supermarket is valued more highly than the vital job of caring for our elderly and vulnerable. Britain’s modern welfare state was intended to provide a “cradle to grave” safety net for all. Founded on the principles of social insurance, its introduction came with all party support. During their working lives, citizens paid into the system via their taxes and national insurance contributions and the welfare state was there – as and when needed to ensure adequate income, health care, education, housing and employment. Yet for social care, years of chronic underfunding by successive governments has made today’s safety net one of “cradle to care home door”. Unlike the NHS, which can still be held up as a beacon of our values, for the one in twenty of us who will go into a care home, this crumbling pillar of society represents

a betrayal of hundreds of thousands of citizens who contributed to this country all their lives. Does today’s care sector really represent the full value as a society we place on our vulnerable and elderly, and those who care for them? It is easy to forget just how big this industry is. (The figures are astronomical). Care employs around one million workers. Over 400,000 people are in residential care, more than twice that number receive care in their own home. The budget for adult social care is 19 billion pounds a year, most of it spent by local authorities; but funding is not ring-fenced and the gap is growing by 700 million a year, predicted to reach 4.3 billion by 2020. Catastrophe looms, even before the socalled Living Wage comes in next year. The care sector is riven with high turnover of staff and perennial shortages of nurses and other specialist roles. This not only directly affects the quality of care but increases NHS costs to the tune of hundreds of millions of pounds from avoidable hospital admissions and bed-blocking. Just as providing no state funding for care sector training is an illogical false economy, it is frankly bonkers to underfund the care sector. Without serious fees and funding increases, more Southern Cross style collapses are inevitable, more care homes will be closed and more care beds lost. The knock-on effects on the NHS are obvious and imminent: more people will be hospitalised - and for longer - and the NHS will buckle and break. Fees must rise immediately to at least the £600 per week Rowntree Foundation

Fair Care Model; a new and independent Training Commission must be formed, responsible for ensuring the supply of UK trained staff - for all occupations - to meet future demand in the care sector and the NHS; there must be new government funding for universal standards of care sector training through training support grants to the public and private sectors; care occupations should be registered and seen as a career path, giving those working in the sector the status they deserve, banishing the low paid, unappreciated, “invisible” roles tolerated today; and last, but by no means least, all care workers should be paid to at least the Living Wage Foundation level. We are all voyeurs in the slow motion collapse of the care sector from an acute lack of funds and an imbalance in the interface between care and the NHS. Aside from the obvious effects on those needing to use the sector, it makes no structural or economic sense. Politicians of all parties must address the funding crisis, stop talking about the integration of health and care - and act, beginning with the Chancellor in the forthcoming comprehensive spending review. And it is high time for all of us to face up to the real cost of caring for the ones we love and for ourselves in later life. If the money being thrown at corporation tax cuts, and the uncollected taxes on property incomes going to tax havens, went into social care - the country could start looking itself in the mirror again, and our elderly and vulnerable would get the quality of care they deserve.”

NEW SCHEME TO IMPROVE SHOPPING GATEWAY A new scheme is set to be rolled out to improve one of Sheffield’s key gateway shopping centres. The London Road Shop Front Improvement Scheme is intended to help improve the appearance of the frontages of existing independent businesses The scheme forms an important part of a wider regeneration plan for London Road and it will contribute to the overall attraction and confidence of the area. Improvement of the street scene will help to boost the image and reputation of the

centre and encourage additional private investment in shops and housing. Councillor Jayne Dunn said: “The shop front improvement scheme has made a significant impact in Darnall and Spital Hill and we are hoping it will have a similar impact on London Road. We believe that this scheme will help to create an attractive centre that people are proud of and will encourage further investment by the existing businesses. However, it will need the majority of independent owners to participate so

that sufficient impact can be made to the overall street scene. Some exciting developments are already planned for this part of the city and these improvements will complement these projects to attract more people into the area.” The proposed scheme is just one of a number of initiatives to be delivered under the programme to help build relationships and support independent trade in the centre.

BRAND NEW KICK OFF GIG SEASON AT THE ACADEMY Preview: Brand New, 19/09/15, O2 Academy Sheffield By Kt Evans

Spicing up September after one hell of a festival calendar, alternative rock group Brand New are set to perform at Sheffield’s O2 Academy on 19th September. Arguably one of the biggest cult bands of the twenty first century, Brand New have inspired a wave of bluesy rock groups with their emotively riddled repertoire. Having taken almost two years off the circuit of touring, Brand New are armed with a new single “Mene” to tantalise ear drums of ticket holders across the Steel City. Hats off to O2 Academy Sheffield. From alternative rock to indie pop to electronic acts across the spectrum, the former Roxy Disco on Arundel Street is a hybrid of all that is popular within the music industry. Regardless of your personal music taste, the 1000 + capacity venue is always on hand to offer you an evening’s worth of awesome live music. Seizing the main room this coming Saturday, Brand New really are no exception. With four studio albums under their belts, the Long Island four piece are to hit the seven hills with pure US style. If we search back into the history of Brand New, it is more than easy to see why these underground legends have created such a huge name for

themselves. Forming in 2000, the band first released their debut album, “Your Favourite Weapon” in 2001. With hardcore and punk rock elements intertwined, this gritty debut proved to all that Brand New were undeniably a force to be reckoned with. 2003 saw the release of “Deja Entendu,” yet another classic hit from a group who have since headlined festivals across the world. “The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me” in 2006 and “Daisy” in 2009 followed, furthering the bands image of one of the most forward thinking set of musicians within the industry. In 2014, Brand New headlined the mighty Hit The Deck Festival at Nottingham’s Rock City. A one day event which attracted more than 20,000 spectators throughout the city centre, their show proved to all that Brand New are still right on their game. Returning to the north of England as part of their upcoming live tour, expect to hear previously unheard material along with a range of ultimate classic hits we all know and love.

Love them or hate them, Asking Alexandria have well and truly returned. Since the shock departure of their former outlandish frontman Danny Worsnop, the Northern pack are aimed with a brand new vocalist Denis Stoff and are bolstering up for the release of their fourth studio album in the new year. With a performance in Sheffield’s O2 Academy set for 27th October, we caught up with guitarist and lyricist Ben Bruce to get the gossip on the most anticipated release of the bands career. I want to talk about your upcoming fourth album. Do you have a release date or title for the album yet? We were initially planning to release the record in November but we’ve postponed the release because we really just want to make it perfect. We’ve set ourselves a deadline of January 2016 which gives us all more time. This new album has got to prove to everyone that we really are still here. We feel better than we have for years and we want that to be reflected within the album. You’ve said that the new album will feature influences from Slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold. How different will this record be from previous material? I think our last record went on a bit of a tangent. For this new album, we’ve gone back to more original Asking Alexandria material, but we’ve added a modern twist to it. We’ve reverted back to albums one and two for influence so expect a more traditional vibe within the new record. How has the new vocalist, Dennis impacted on the 4th album? Have you been writing tracks together? Since the band started, I did 90% of the writing for the albums. Denis has got involved since he joined, swapping lyrics and throwing about ideas. He suggests I should try this and that, which is really refreshing! I didn’t know how it would work at first, seeing I used to have a hell of a lot of control, but

Denis has some amazing ideas which have been a breath of fresh air. It’s really has worked out very well.

How was the writing and recording process? Am I still justified to call you a metalcore band? We still have a few vocal tracks to record, the gang vocals and the choir parts for example. But it’s almost ready now, just a few alterations to be done. In terms of metalcore…I don’t put things into a subgenre. When I’m in a taxi and the driver says ‘God, you’ve got a lot of tattoos, you must be a musician’ and they ask me what music I play, I just say ‘heavy stuff.’ It makes it far less complicated. Maybe I should make something totally obscure up…salsa?! You’ve said the album will feature some huge arena rock songs. Is the dream to do a headline arena tour in the near future? It is certainly a goal of mine which we are trying to work towards. We supported Bullet For My Valentine at Wembley pretty recently, but one day it will be our headline show. Having said that, we would all love to headline a one off show at Manchester MEN. Everyone does Wembley so we just want to do something different. The North doesn’t often get a lot of the big shows, it can get ignored at times, which is why we want to bring an Asking Alexandria show away from London. Your former vocalist Danny Worsnop recently left the band. Are we to expect references to this departure in the new album? There are a few references throughout which are pretty obvious. When I first started penning lyrics, most of it was aimed at him to begin with. But after a while, I just thought why should we bother? So we changed a lot of the lyrics and pretty much re-did the album. We’ve left some in though and they’re pretty mean. You’ll have to listen out for them when the record gets released. Asking Alexandria play the O2 Academy on the 27th of October. www.O2academysheffield.co.uk

SHEFFIELD’S BRING ME THE HORIZON SET FOR NUMBER ONE ALBUM Sheffield head bangers Bring Me The Horizon are on course for the biggest moment of their career with their brand new album “That’s The Spirit” set to chart at number one this weekend. Although it might not be an easy mission – with Stereophonics huge new album “Keep The Village Alive” also in contention, this head to head battle will result in a UK chart topping album. If you haven’t already listened to Bring Me The Horizon’s inspiring new album, we suggest you do so now. Right now. Right this very second now. Because it’s an absolute cracker. With hits to include “Throne,” “True Friends” and “Happy Song,” the record is undeniably the bands most accomplished record to date. Already filling the speakers in rock clubs across the globe, the local five piece have once again proved that they are one of Sheffield’s finest exports. However, the path isn’t as clear as they may have hoped. Welsh rockers Stereophonics are also competing for the top spot with their ninth studio album “Keep The Village Alive.” Released on the same day as BMTH (11th September), the ten track release has received huge praise from fans and

critics alike. So who will emerge victorious? If we take a moment to consider the statistics of this now famous rivalry, it states that Bring Me The Horizon are currently leading the battle by 1000 more album sales than Stereophonics. However…this could all change very quickly with the final chart being announced on Sunday 20th September. We would love to say that we were not biased but that would be a bare faced lie. It’s always a proud moment to witness a local band explode into the industry, let alone potentially top the charts. Their fourth album, “Sempiternal” landed a number three album chart position back in April 2013, the group’s most successful record to date. Flying on the back of their headline show at Wembley Area in December 2014 alongside supporting the mighty Metallica at this year’s Reading and Leeds Festival, if any band on the circuit deserve it…hell it’s Bring Me The Horizon. Keep up to date on the album charts at www. officialcharts.com. You can purchase “That’s The Spirit” on itunes now. Check out the bands official website www.bmthofficial.com for full details.

Celebrating 50 years of UK number one hit singles, the Magic of Motown brings its brandnew 2015 Reach Out Tour to Sheffield City Hall on Saturday 31st October. Songs like Stop in the Name of Love, I Can’t Help Myself, Tracks of My Tears and It’s the Same Old Song rocketed artists like the Supremes, The Four Tops, and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles to the top of the singles charts in 1965, says show producer Michael Taylor. “Incredibly, 100 more No1s followed worldwide,” he says. “The Magic of Motown 2015 Reach Out Tour brings to the stage 36 of these chart toppers back-to-back in one critically-acclaimed production.” Direct from the USA, The Magic of Motown promises five-star performances that will authentically revive the style and sophistication of everyone’s favourite musical legends. “This year we’re proud to announce that the show will include more number one hits than ever before,” says Michael. Classic hits from the Temptations, Four Tops, Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie and The Supremes are packed into the twohour spectacular. “As well as dazzling dance moves and glittering costumes galore,” says Michael. “the elusive, authentic sound is recreated by our incredible band.” The group, especially put together for the show, celebrate their twelth year together on this tour. “In their capable hands,” says Michael, “you can guarantee that the score will be – with a nod to the great Stevie Wonder – uptight. . . alright and out of sight!” In 1965 Diana Ross and the Supremes, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Stevie Wonder and the Temptations crossed the Atlantic for a UK-wide tour of ABC, Odeon and Gaumont theatres which began the process of the artistes becoming musical phenomena on these shores. To mark the occasion, The Magic of Motown brings an all-new production for 2015 to the stage with a 100-date nationwide tour. Male lead in the show Andre Lejaune promises

TOP TEN TIPS FOR RELIABLE MOTORING There are many ways in which you can maintain safety and reliability by following a series of basic rules to ensure your vehicle is running as it should! This week we list our Top Ten easy tips to help you keep safely on the road: MONITOR INFLATION Over-inflated tyres result in a less effective contact patch on the road, making the car feel ‘skittish’, reducing ride quality, limiting grip in the wet and dry and wearing the rubber in the centre. Under-inflated tyres make for ‘soggy’ handling, work the engine harder (using more fuel) and over-flex the tyre sidewall, potentially leading to a blowout. KEEP YOUR COOL An overheating engine can leave you stranded with a big repair bill. The best way to prevent a hot engine is to ensure your radiator is always full of radiator fluid, which is usually green but can sometimes be yellow, and is designed to reduce the risk of freezing in cold climates and boiling in hot climates. More importantly, radiator fluid helps reduce corrosion, which is a major cause of radiator clogging and leaking. To flush your radiator if the fluid is dirty, use a garden hose to circulate water through it (never remove the cap from a hot radiator) with the drain plug removed. STAY WELL OILED You’ll need to check the oil recommended for your car, the engine’s oil capacity and the type of filter required before you start changing your oil and filter. New oil keeps the engine spinning freely, maximising its efficiency and longevity. A lack of oil and/or dirty oil increases the risk of wear and

overheating, and shortens the engine’s life. CLEAN WIPES New windscreen wiper blades will help keep the outside surface of your windscreen clean. Apart from cleaning your screen less effectively, old wipers trap dirt and rub it into the glass, eventually causing a fine haze effect which can scatter sunlight, blurring vision. STRIKING A CLEAN BALANCE When it comes to wiper washer mixtures, good old fashioned plain water will do the trick. So will some household window cleaners, but they’re not formulated for car usage. Avoid using soapy liquids in your washer bottle; instead use a dash of methylated sprits, which we reckon is the most effective. SHINING A LIGHT ON SAFETY Don’t underestimate the importance of your indicators, which you can tell are working by the lights in the instrument panel and the regular ticking sound that accompany them. When an indicator fails, both the lights and the noise become more rapid. As with headlights, it’s really easy to check your indicators are working, but brake lights are harder to check on your own. Clean your headlight lenses to maximise their effectiveness. KEEP IT CLEAN It sounds simple but it’s essential to keep your car clean and tidy – inside and out, including the boot. That means removing all non-essential large and/ or heavy items, which can become lethal weapons in the event of a collision. Give your car a good vacuum at least once a month if it’s used daily. Buy some cloth or rubber mats so the carpet on the car’s floor doesn’t wear thin and become slippery. Clean your steering wheel from time to time with an alcoholic wipe; it’ll offer more grip, feel and smell nicer, and be more hygienic.

COVER UP Cloth seats generally need nothing more than a vacuum to keep clean and there’s nothing wrong with seat covers. In fact, like floor mats, seat covers will help protect the value of your car. A GOOD SURFACE CLEAN There are different types of cleaners for different interior surfaces. Newer cars usually only require spray-and-wipe style cleaners, but makes sure you don’t go overboard. For the outside, use a pressure washer instead of the car wash. USE YOUR EYES AND EARS Pay attention to your car. Eyeball your car closely for a few minutes every once in a while. Look for fresh spots of fluid under your car and check your fluid levels regularly. Turn down the stereo and listen to your car at start-up, at low speed, on the freeway and during braking and acceleration. When components need replacing you’ll often hear and feel them. It could make your car safer and potentially prevent costly repairs.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

A return to the River Derwent this week; I’ve had some specialist rods on test, and I needed to give them a workout, so where better? The rods in question were a 1.5lb test curve specialist, and a tri-tip rod with three separate tip sections of differing test curves, which cover a variety of situations. It’s always nice to be asked for an opinion, (after all, most anglers have one!) and I’ve had five rods in total to play with over the last few weeks, and I have to say that so far, I’m impressed. A few details to be added, but these new additions to the range, if accepted by the company, will certainly prove popular. Amongst the rods, I’ve found that my favourite is definitely the 1.5lb specialist; I’ve had it out on the river, it’s easily capable of chucking a decent sized feeder across the river, and when playing a barbel, it’s heavenly! On a river currently in superb form, I headed straight to a peg I know will often produce barbel during the daylight hours, and cheerfully set up in what is probably my favourite ever river swim at the tail of a weir near Derby. Although I was hoping for a barbel, the river can often throw up a hefty chub, or even carp, so strong tackle is required. I chose to use a Vardis Tackle Anti-Snag hook, a superbly strong pattern that will take some abuse, tied to a long mono hook link, terminating in a Vardis flexi-ring swivel; nothing complicated, just good sturdy kit. I’d fed a little bit of home prepared hemp (I hate that job!) before tackling up, so was hopeful that something would have its head down before I introduced the hook bait. I’ve had a reasonable amount of success on the Derwent with Mainline Baits Hybrid boilies; they

offer good levels of attraction which barbel seem to love, and more importantly, will stand the attentions of crayfish which now seem to inhabit the river. A solitary bait was hair rigged and dropped on the edge of a likely looking crease… Feathering the cast, there is no need to pick up much line, so I rested the rod, and allowed the current to tighten the line to the lead. I always sit extremely close to my rods when barbel fishing, for obvious reasons, and prefer to watch the tip rather than wait for an alarm. I watched intently for any indications. As I sat peacefully watching the rod, I noted a kingfisher perch on a rock just upstream, so made an effort to lift my camera. As usual, when attention is diverted, a savage wrench of the rod tip saw the rod hoop over as a barbel hit the bait! I lifted the rod (no need to strike that one!) and commenced battle! The Derwent is throwing up some huge fish at the moment, a 17lb and 16lb 8oz reported over the past week or two, but typically, I’d hooked into perhaps the smallest barbel ever at around 5lb! Nevertheless, it gave an extremely good account of itself, and more importantly, allowed me to give the new rod a reasonable workout, before it surrendered and drifted into the waiting net. I didn’t even put it on the mat, preferring to unhook in the water and allow a passer-by to take a few quick shots of a glorious torpedo shaped flash which was in excellent condition, before releasing gently to fight another day. A great start! I’m still in awe of the raw power of a barbel take, it is far more aggressive than that of any carp or cat, and my heart always leaps when the rod is dragged over as the fight begins! If you haven’t fished a river for barbel, you really should! After an hour without further action, it was time to move, so I headed downstream to an area I’ve never fished before. Both rods were getting a good workout, a few hours of casting and retrieving against a steady flow, and I lost a barbel in weed during the late afternoon. I had intended to stay into the dark hours, but a text message advised me that grandson number three was perhaps on the way, and it would be prudent to return home at good speed, so it was time to leave! I’d been able to assess both of the new tools, and aside from a few suggestions, I was completely happy. The 1.5lb test curve rod, if released, will become a mainstay of my bream, tench and small river barbel kit, I can honestly say it’s a fantastic bit of kit! Watch this space for updates….

and former FA chief Geoff Thompson added to the list which includes Alf Goodison, Stuart Topham, Brian Bradley, Geoff Burgess and Ernest Walker. The Outstanding Contribution to Refereeing award has been renamed The Ken Burkinshaw Award for Extraordinary Services to Refereeing, in memory of Ken who sadly passed away earlier this year, and with two of our current referees due to receive the accolades of Referee of the Year and Young Referee of the Year, it is the chance to celebrate the work done by all our local referees. There will also be six McDonald’s Community Awards will also be presented on the night. Richard Finney, Marketing, Communications and Charity Officer said: “It is great that through the McDonald’s Awards we are able to acknowledge the work put in by the clubs off the pitch to make sure all their teams can play in a safe and friendly environment. These clubs have worked hard to develop and maintain good standards, and to recognise the good work done by individuals.” In addition two clubs will receive recognition for their work both on and off the field as they collect the FA Respect Awards. There will also be a special award given to Bill Armstrong who this year is celebrating being involved as a Council Member with Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA for 50 years.

Farrend Rawson’s first goal for the club put the Millers’ in charge at the interval and the game swung on a vital sixty seconds when Tony Andreu’s point-blank header was superbly kept out by Nick Pope just moments before Patrick Bauer levelled matters for the hosts. Following the international break, the Millers reshuffled the pack for the trip to the capital as Lee Camp was handed his Rotherham debut between the sticks following his deadline day move from Bournemouth. Derby loanee Rawson was given a starting berth at the heart of the Millers’ rearguard for his second debut at the club while Joe Mattock shrugged off a foot injury to take his place in the left-back slot. New skipper Lee Frecklington took his place in the visitors’ engine room while Norwich loan pair Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe and Andreu were thrown immediately into the fray for their Millers’ debuts. The home side had the first sight of goal when Tony Watt’s mazy dribble had the Millers on the backfoot and the ball fell kindly into the path of Johann Gudmundsson, who fired a snap shot from the edge of the box which was smothered by the body of Camp.

Moments later, fine one-touch passing involving Chris Solly and Gudmundsson saw Jordan Cousins show fleet of foot to evade the attentions of Rawson to advance menacingly into the box before toe-poking an effort which was smartly parried to safety by Camp. The Rotherham stopper was in the thick of the action and he came to the visitors’ rescue when Alou Diarra’s floated ball was flicked on into the path of Cousins, who struck a rising effort which was arrowing into the roof of the net until Camp’s late intervention with an acrobatic save. In the Millers’ first foray of note, Jonson Clarke-Harris emerged from a cul-de-sac to give Joe Newell a sight of goal and the ex-Peterborough midfielder struck a left-footed effort which stung the palms of Nick Pope in the home goal. Moments later, Andreu almost put Clarke-Harris through on goal but the Rotherham striker was inches away from latching onto his slide-rule pass before Diarra’s well-timed tackle prevented Clarke-Harris racing clear again in the next phase of play. Odjidja-Ofoe made something out of nothing to waltz past the attentions of El-Hadji Ba and Ahmed Kashi with an outrageous piece of skill before trying his luck from just outside the box but he dragged his shot narrowly wide of the target.

Just past the half hour mark, ClarkeHarris embarked on a dribble to the edge of the box before he was upended by Kashi and the ex-Oldham hitman almost exacted retribution when his resultant free-kick was deflected over the bar. With the home side debating the corner award, Newell swung over a delightful centre which flew over the ruck of bodies in the box and with Pope in no-man’s land, Rawson ghosted in at the far post and he had the simple task of tapping home into the unguarded net from point-blank range. The home side’s frustration was summed up when Solly saw yellow for dissent following a Rotherham free-kick award before Richie Smallwood’s delicate chip over the top almost put Andreu through on goal but he couldn’t get the ball under control. The home side were quick out of the blocks following the restart and Igor Vetokele’s initial shot was blocked by Lewis Buxton before his follow-up effort was straight down the throat of Camp. Moments later, Solly’s clever chip over the top was superbly controlled by Gudmundsson on the edge of the box and the Icelandic international cut inside with menace before firing an effort which whistled narrowly over the bar.

In the home side’s next attack, Vetokele rose highest from Solly’s centre to loop a header which had to be tipped over by Camp before Diarra’s drilled effort from the resultant corner was bravely blocked by Frecklington, who put his body on the line to prevent the ball arrowing goalwards. In a rare foray from the Millers, Clarke-Harris latched onto Mattock’s floated centre to strike a low effort which took a deflection of Bauer as the ball fizzed viciously wide of the target. Morgan Fox had to be on his toes to put the ball behind with Frecklington lerking menacingly at the far post following Clarke-Harris’ dangerous centre before Rotherham came within a whisker of doubling their advantage when Mattock’s pinpoint centre was inch-perfect for the run of Andreu, whose downward header brought a superb reflex save from Pope, to arguably keep the home side in the contest. Just past the hour mark, Rawson made a last-ditch tackle to prevent Cousins striking goalwards but Charlton got themselves back on level terms from the resultant corner when Rotherham failed to clear the ball decisively and the ball found itself into the path of sub Simon Makienok in the left-hand channel and his cross-cum-shot took Camp out of the

equation and Bauer bundled the ball home from close range. In the aftermath of the goal, Diarra and Collins both saw yellow following a clash before the restart. The home side were lifted by the equaliser and Watt tried his luck from distance but Camp was his equal with a fine save before Newell became the latest to see yellow for bundling over Ba on the edge of the box. Gudmundsson almost made the Millers pay from the resultant free-kick when his left-footed effort fizzed past the upright before Charlton turned defence into attack in the blink of an eye following the breakdown of a visitors attack minutes later and Watt raced clear but Smallwood kept his nerve with a timely block to prevent him shooting goalwards. With the game in the balance, sub Chris Maguire almost made an immediate impact when his snap shot from distance had Pope at full stretch before Gudmundsson’s cross-cumshot had Millers’ fans on the edge of their seats as it whistled narrowly of the target. Gudmundsson seemed to be at the heart of the Addicks’ attacking intentions and his low effort brought the best out of Camp once again with a full length save before Maguire’s late cross was snaffled by Pope as both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.

JONES’ FIRST GAME IN CHARGE SPOILED BY TWO LATE GOALS Following Paul Dickov’s departure midweek, it was club captain and Under 21 Manager Rob Jones who took to the dugout looking to lead Rovers to victory in the West Midlands. Jones fielded a strong starting eleven. Richie Wellens returned to the squad while Cameron Stewart came in to the side to replace Cedric Evina. The home side had a strong start and it took just seven minutes for them to test the Rovers defence. Andy Taylor delivered an inch perfect cross from the left towards the back post, Jason Demetriou struck the ball on the volley from close range but his effort was just

over the bar. Minutes later Rovers broke down the other end, James Coppinger released Andy Williams down the right. His low cross into the box was met by an overhead kick from the Rovers captain forcing Neil Etheridge into a great save low to his right. With Walsall enjoying possession in midfield, they should have taken the lead when Romaine Sawyers threaded a perfect pass through the defence for Bradshaw. Looking like they were about to take the lead, Thorsten Stuckmann was rapid off his line to make a brave save and deny the striker.

Despite being behind in possession, the visitors came close on the break through Curtis Main. The striker surged forward with the ball beating the defence before releasing a rocket of a shot towards goal, only to see it go inches wide of the post. Cameron Stewart caused problems for Walsall down the left. Looking to break into the box he was dragged down just outside the area. His resulting free kick threatened as a dipping delivery towards the back post was narrowly over the cross bar. Rob Jones’ side finished the half strong and Aaron Taylor-Sinclair forced Etheridge into another good save when

him really well, playing with him, he’s a leader who couldn’t be more prepared for this scenario. “He’s put a lot of work since he played a part in us winning the league and people don’t realise what part he played in that as a manager. “He’s a fantastic man-manager and he’s a fantastic people person. Doing his A-licence and going away and working hard, doing the under 21’s will put him in good stead and I wish him all the best and all the lads are behind him.”

Club Captain says fans will appreciate hard graft and get behind Rob Jones and the team. James Coppinger has suggested that he and his teammates need to take greater responsibility when Rovers return home to face managerless Oldham Athletic at Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday. Coppinger was speaking after losing 2-0 at Walsall – the first game under interim head coach Rob Jones. “We’ve got to take responsibility as players, we’ve got to work harder day in day out doing things which will makes a difference on a Saturday and I think that will be put in place this week,” he said. “We’ve got to look and analyse what we’re doing on a Saturday and improve

it! There’s no other way to do it. “As individuals you’ve got to take responsibility as a team and pick people out if they need it – not in a negative way but in a positive way to improve people. We’re in a situation where it can only get better. With Rob in charge, it looked positive.” Club Captain Coppinger lent his support to Jones – a person and player whom he knows well – and expects the same from the Rovers faithful. “The gaffer will be looking at going through the (Walsall) video and where we can improve and having a good go on Saturday because they’ll be right behind Rob I think,” said Coppinger. “Travelling in with him and knowing

his free kick from 20 yards was smartly kept out by the Walsall keeper. It was a lively start to the second half for the home side who enjoyed the majority of the possession once again. Milan Lalkovic should have put them ahead as he cut inside from the right before shooting low with his left, however his shot was just wide of the right post. On the counter, Coppinger was in possession on the edge of the Walsall area, with Williams behind him the striker struck a fierce half volley at goal. The ball looked destined for the net but somehow Etheridge denied the visitors with an acrobatic save. Minutes later it was the Rovers keeper that was called into action. Andy Taylor with the ball cut inside from the left before curling a shot at goal. Stockman was at full stretch to keep out what looked to be a definite goal.

With the game turning scrappy, it looked as though a goal either way would decide the winner. Williams fought hard up front but it wasn’t going for him. With five minutes to go Walsall broke the deadlock. With Rovers failing to clear their lines the ball fell to Bradshaw whose half volley rattled the roof of the net, a great finish. He went close again straight from the restart, this time he dragged his left footed shot wide of the post. Into added time, Walsall doubled their lead and Bradshaw doubled his tally. Substitute Paul Keegan lost possession in midfield allowing the hosts to break. Beating the offside trap, Bradshaw found himself one on one with Stuckmann. Forcing the keeper off his line, the striker chipped him from the edge of the area to secure all three points.

BLADES NEWS2015/16 BLADES RUN CUT SHORT Nigel Adkins saw his Bramall Lane unbeaten start come to an end on Saturday. Billy Sharp scored in a third successive league game but it was not enough to prevent the Blades losing in the league for the first time since the opening day of the campaign. Despite Tutte firing weakly wide for Bury, the Blades made the brighter start, working hard to break down the visiting side’s organised unit. Campbell-Ryce delivered a perfect cross which saw Sammon head straight at goalkeeper Lainton. The Blades continued to attempt to push Bury back with Woolford and Campbell-Ryce seeing plenty of the ball, whilst Reed curled a free-kick over the angle of post and crossbar following

a foul on McEveley. As half-time approached referee Webb angered the home fans. He failed to show Soares a yellow card following a foul on CampbellRyce, which would have been the Bury midfielder’s second, and then McEveley was booked when he won the ball close to the technical area. Late in the half the Blades continued to be on the front foot and Bury’s stalling tactics were evident even before the half-time whistle. There was a frantic start to the second half as United looked to up the tempo and there were two early chances. From Edgar’s chip over the defence, Sammon was crowded out by a combination of Cameron and Lainton, whilst the Bury goalkeeper

pushed away Woolford’s half-volley. Collins head over Woolford’s corner, whilst Freeman cut back for Sharp to fire over before boss Adkins made a double change, introducing Wallace and Flynn. Before they could make an impression, Bury grasped the initiative. From a hopeful ball into the box, Mayor’s effort was blocked by Edgar and the ball dropped invitingly for POPE to slot home from six yards. United had an immediate chance to level but from Flynn’s corner, the ball came off Collins’ shoulder, whilst Bury’s slowing tactics continued, although the visitors came close to a second when Howard had to kick away from Leon Clarke. The Blades, however, were soon level, and it was one of the substitutes that was instrumental. The turn from Wallace beat both Riley and Brown and a combination of both hauled him down. It was right on the edge

of the penalty area but referee Webb pointed to the spot and SHARP took responsibility to drilled home in front of the Kop. From another Flynn corner, Collins was involved once again but Lainton saved with his chest. In an offensive move, Adkins threw on McNulty for Woolford but the Blades were undone with the next attack. Brown laid off to RILEY, who smashed an unstoppable 35-yard effort across Howard and into the top corner on 83 minutes. A melee on 84 minutes helped Bury slow down the action, Leon Clarke and Sharp getting booked to take the yellow card count to eight, which later became nine. Late on United’s passing became longer but the chances dried up, whilst five minutes of added time saw Bury hit on the break again. This time Hussey’s ball over the top saw Leon CLARKE nudge McEveley away from the ball before chipping over Howard.

BASSETT’S BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN It was the season the Blades returned to the elite of English football. Twenty five years after Bassett’s Boys clinched promotion with a remarkable 5-2 away victory at Leicester City’s Filbert Street ground in front of thousands of ecstatic fans, manager Dave Bassett and his squad are to be reunited for a special celebration three course dinner at BDTBL. Fans will have the chance to celebrate with the squad of 89-90 at the dinner on October 24th - including legends such as Brian Deane, Tony Agana, Simon Tracey and Ian Bryson. Bassett, who achieved his second promotion with the Club, cannot wait to go down memory lane with the players and supporters. He said: “It was a truly memorable period in the history of the Blades and it will be fabulous to re-live the events of that season with the boys and, of course, the supporters many of whom for the promotion clinching game at Leicester were in fancy dress at the away end.” The event is being produced by Martin Green from Redtooth who said: “My objective for the evening is to take a chronological journey through the season with

the aid of edited versions of the iconic cult six part BBC Documentary “United” . We also want to try and track down the fans that went to Leicester in fancy dress and were captured on film. Other highlights of the evening will include - An auction of United’s best ever away shirt, the Lime Green shirt - as chosen at the 125th anniversary. The shirt will be signed by members of the squad and manager Dave Bassett. - A walk of fame onto the stage by the players and manager - A question and answer session - A comedian and a music soundtrack from the era from match day presenter Gary Sinclair A donation from the auction and the evening will go to the new Sheffield United Former Players Association Benevolent Fund. The doors of the Platinum Suite will open at 7.30pm and a superb three course meal will be served at 8.00pm. OWLS NEWS2015/16 TURF MOOR MISERY TURNING PERFORMANCES FOR WEDNESDAY INTO RESULTS The Championship resumed following the first international break of the season and Wednesday emerged from Burnley with an unfortunate 3-1 defeat. After David Jones gave the hosts an early lead and Atdhe Nuhiu levelled, the Owls went on to dominate much of an entertaining contest. But against the run of play, the Clarets snatched the points with two late goals from Matthew Taylor and new signing Andre Gray. Right from the start, though, Wednesday saw plenty of possession, but it was Burnley who opened the scoring on seven minutes. Jones lined up a long range set piece and stepped up to deliver a rasping shot that curled away from Joe Wildsmith and into the net. But Wednesday took the early blow on the chin before countering with a strike of their own. A neat build-up 20 minutes in ended with Daniel Pudil aiming a peach of a cross into the danger zone where Nuhiu planted an

unstoppable header past Tom Heaton. The Owls went close to a second moments later when Fernando Forestieri had a header cleared off the line by Michael Duff. The Italian then came close to profiting from a defensive mix-up ten minutes before the break but the Clarets hoofed clear, and play moved straight to the other end, where Wildsmith came to the rescue when Gray burst through. Burnley almost went one better in the last action of the first half, Michael Gray blazing over the crossbar when the ball fell kindly from a corner. The Owls threatened immediately after the resumption when Forestieri hit just wide of the target before Barry Bannan headed a Liam Palmer cross over. Wednesday were in the

driving seat and Nuhiu shot down the throat of Heaton following a mazy Forestieri run – but Burnley looked dangerous on the counter and Wildsmith was alert to thwart Gray who raced in on goal. George Boyd was next to be denied by Wildsmith as the young keeper dived to keep out a fierce drive but he could do nothing to keep out a vicious Taylor volley 12 minutes from time. To rub the salt, Burnley promptly struck again in stoppage time when Gray robbed Palmer in the penalty area before placing neatly beyond Wildsmith.

Carlos Carvalhal wants to see quality football converted into points on the board. Without question, Wednesday played impressive football at Turf Moor on Saturday but frustratingly returned empty-handed. Such was the Owls’ dominance through the Championship clash at Burnley, Carlos Carvalhal said he would have been disappointed with a draw – never mind the 3-1 defeat that unfolded at Turf Moor. Wednesday produced arguably their best performance of the season so far but emerged with nothing to show from their efforts. And Carvalhal said: “When the game was 1-1, I think everyone in the stadium was waiting for Sheffield Wednesday to score the next goal. We were in control of the game, we saw so much of the ball and I was thinking that I was disappointed if this ends in a draw. But then we concede two late goals and that was not what we deserved. The players are very disappointed in the dressing room because they know, we all know, that the scoreline was not a good reflection of the game. But congratulations to Burnley, they took their chances and there will be games this season when the opposites play very well but we will win the game.” The Owls’ head coach did see through the frustration to state his confidence in much

better times to come as the campaign develops. He added: “We were the better side today and I am very pleased with the performance although of course not with the result. We will only get better and better, I am sure of that. We gave a very good performance today but that’s football. We move on now and we are pleased we have a very quick opportunity for our next game against Bolton on Tuesday.” For Carvalhal, the head coach wants to see the same quality levels and aggressive forward play but importantly have three points to show for it at full time. Ahead of tonight’s clash with Bolton he said: “This is one match that we know will be difficult but it’s time to look to ourselves and what we are doing. After the break we changed the way that we play, we have created a new dynamic and our answers in the match at Burnley were very good. We created a lot of chances, put in a lot of crosses, played

THE SHAKEY

good football, very positive football and I think we are in a good way. What was missing in that game was the victory and the points. I believe the teams that play good football win more matches. If you play good football and play with quality, you will win more than you will lose.” With the Championship campaign very much in its infancy, victory at The Macron would give the league table a very different slant and Carlos continued: “Against Bolton we want three points. That’s what we need and we will fight every step of the way to get them. It is important we learn from our mistakes and try to play with more efficiency because we create a lot of chances. We are playing with good quality and I want to see that convert into points. This will happen to our opposites one game where we will not play well but get three points. These things happen in football.”
