And although Wednesday’s Mercury link is helpful for more constructive dialogue, this could still be quite delicate, Aries. Call now for more advice…

If a relationship has seemed strained over the past week, this could be down to the developing Eclipse in Aries. Although you’re often diplomatic you might find it hard to maintain your usual calm response if you feel challenged. Call now for more news and astral advice…

You might want to take a relaxed schedule, as lunar influences can contribute to unexpected social possibilities. In addition, allowing yourself extra time might help you deal with any glitches in a more balanced way. Let your feelings have the upper hand. Call now for more…

Try to ease into this new week Scorpio, as a potent lunar influence can cause you to feel pressured and perhaps less energetic right from the off. It can also encourage you to think about your work life balance and ways to make your daily activities more enjoyable. Call for more…

Should you find yourself infatuated with an idea or person, it may be due to the Lunar Eclipse stirring up some powerful emotions. Once they subside you’ll have a better understanding of whether you should go ahead or walk on by. Call me now for your in-depth forecast…

Your social life may alter on the back of this week’s Lunar Eclipse. You may find that a friend moves away or perhaps you decide to leave one circle and are drawn to another group. It’s also possible you’ll be the one who needs to adapt to a new social scene. Call for more…

With the Moon as your personal planet, you may feel the effects of Monday’s Lunar Eclipse more than most people. It could influence personal goals as well as home and family issues - with unexpected events pushing you to make key changes. Call for more news and advice…

This week’s Eclipse can stir up family or emotional issues. A conversation or event could encourage you to take action sooner than you intended, particularly once you realize how vital it is to talk things over and find a permanent solution. Call for more astral advice…

Mars can encourage you to keep track of your income and outgoings, resulting in greater grip over your financial affairs. However, Monday’s Lunar Eclipse hints that feelings may run high, so it may be best to talk over any contentious issues another time. Call for more news…

AN END TO OUTSOURCING AS COUNCIL SEEKS SAVINGS Sheffield City Council is set to make significant savings by bringing some of its property services which are currently delivered by Kier back in-house. Proposals were being discussed by its Cabinet members last Wednesday (16 September). If approved, the proposals will come into effect once the current contract comes to an end in June 2016. The proposals are to bring Property Services, Facilities Management Services, and Security and Events back inhouse. Options are being explored for the Cleaning and Catering contracts, which may involve re-tendering contracts or creating a new joint venture to run them. Councillor Ben Curran, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources said: “This is part of our continued drive to reduce costs on services to minimise the impact government’s cuts have on people in Sheffield. This is why we are reviewing all our options and seeking to make savings where we can. It’s also vital that we continue to develop our services to run them in the best way

possible. I believe we’ll have this under the proposals, which will give us more flexibility about the future services and how they are run.” The Council’s Property Management and Facilities Management services were outsourced to Kier in July 2009. Since then they have been delivered by Kier Asset Partnership Services Ltd (KAPS), with a small cleaning contract for schools delivered by Norse. The current contract has delivered expected savings. But the ever-changing environment in which core Council services are delivered prompted the review of the future options. The council is working closely with Kier and will continue to do so once proposals are agreed. This will include developing a detailed implementation plan for the transfer of services. This work will include working with employees and Trade Unions to ensure that the quality of service delivery is maintained during transition.

SHEFFIELD ALT-ROCK IDOLS CELBRATE WITH TOP 5 ALBUM Review: “That’s The Spirit,” Bring Me The Horizon By Kt Evans

It’s an exceptionally rare occasion when a totally unheard album can make you absolutely speechless. This is 100% the case for the first listen of “That’s The Spirit,” the fifth record released by Sheffield pack Bring Me The Horizon on 11th September. An eleven track release which proudly shoves two fingers up to anybody who ever thought Bring Me The Horizon had lost the game, the album has received commercial success by flying into number two on the Official Album Charts. “That’s The Spirit” typified all that is fresh and current about alternative rock pack Bring Me The Horizon. From releasing their very first record way back in 2008, the band have gone on to reach international heights – most recently supporting the mighty Metallica at Reading and Leeds Festival 2015. Having teased fans for almost a year, the band have plunged straight into the industry once again with arguably their very best record to date. A difficult mission to follow on from killer release “Sempiternal” in April 2013, “That’s The Spirit” marks a mature, educated BMTH who are certainly not afraid to face their demons. Opening up with emotive track “Doomed,” this single projects us into the lives and souls of Sheffield’s most influential export. With heavy synth usage alongside their trademark

anthemic chorus hooks, it is evident to witness the time and effort the band have undergone to perfect the most anticipated release of their career. “Happy Song” appears next, which made up part of the bands pre-album release. Vocal chants, gang choruses and sliding riffs create this piece of awesome Bring Me The Horizon material, alongside marking one of the more heavier tracks on the release. Former singles “Throne” and “True Friends” follow, authentic belters with an added side of synth punch. The track listing at this point within the album works to absolute perfection; the momentum is carried along by the brute force of the material along with the fact that fans of the group have already been exposed to these tracks. A slight turn of events within the album takes us to “Follow You.” Unlike a BMTH song we literally have ever heard before, the track demonstrates vocalist Oli Sykes’s clean vocal ability along with beautiful song writing skill. You see, it seems just ever so slightly strange to be calling a Bring Me song “beautiful.” But hey, what can we say? It’s pretty clear to see that the band are as far removed from their debut album “Count Your Blessing” as possible, however have done so with a transition fed through from “Sempiternal.” Ok so we may not ever have expected quite so many clean vocals or lack of break downs, although this move stamps the mature mark on Bring Me The Horizon. And hell does it

work well. Almost an album in two parts, listen from track six to track eleven and “That’s The Sprit” is littered with bitterness, resent and anger. “What You Need” plays on its lyrics to shock its listener, whilst “Avalanche” and “Run” are fuelled with up-tempo pace and Northern grit. Keyboarder Jordan Fish has worked particularly well to spice up the record with heap loads of synth sections, once again a familiar feature of former record “Sempiternal.” The first single to be released from Bring Me The Horizon back in October of last year, it’s a welcomed relief to see that “Drown” has also made the cut. This single was the maker or breaker from the band who put this track out almost eighteen months after “Sempiternal.” It split opinion (ok ok so the band can’t be blamed for keeping all material exactly the same as “Chelsea Smile”) however won over a ton of new BMTH supporters. Paying homage to the fans who have remained faithful and waited with baited breath for “That’s The Spirit” to finally be released, this recognition to their fans is exactly why Bring Me The Horizon are now regarded as one of rock’s greatest bands. Closing the record and arguably the most un-BMTH track you may ever hear in your life…ever, “O’h No” is without doubt the most emotive and personal track on the record. A clear indication to the perils of drug usage, the single is as haunting as it is utterly moving. A tingling closer to an album which marks the bands “coming of age,” Sheffield…we should be very proud indeed.

The sensational return of UK rock legends Thunder, who had a Top 10 UK album earlier this year, continues into 2016 with the announcement of five UK arena dates including a Sheffield Arena show on Friday 19th February 2016 in the intimate surroundings of the Arena’s Steel Hall. The band will be blowing the roof off arenas around the UK in February. Says lead singer Danny Bowes: “The shows in March were incredible, and the new songs went down just as well as the Thunder favourites. We can’t wait for February, so we can do it all over again.” Support will come from renowned Bradford rockers Terrorvision, who have reformed for their first shows in three years, plus King King, nominees at this year’s Classic Rock Awards for Best New Band. Terrorvision bassist Leigh Marklew, says “We were discussing the idea of getting back into the ring in 2016, so when the call came from Thunder asking us to be their special guests, the timing was perfect. We agreed it will be a fun tour, a great way to come back.” From 1992’s debut Formaldehyde

through to Super Delux in 2011 – Terrorvision have stomped out their own, original brand of shiny pop rock (with dirt under its fingernails), from crunching metal (Alice, What’s The Matter, American TV), pure pop killers (Oblivion, Perseverance and Tequila), brooding melodrama (Middleman, Some People Say, Bad Actress) to high-octane punk funk (My House, Pretend Best Friend, D’ya Wanna Go Faster), Terrorvision have always

delivered the party right to your door.

SCHOOL LESSONS FOR MOTORISTS The new school year is now well under way - but as the weather turns colder, and the days grow shorter, driving conditions both for parents and other motorists - will change. Statistics show that there is a marked increase in both minor collisions and serious injuries at peak times, and drivers should bear this in mind if travelling through areas with schools! Here are our top tips for parents and motorists: • Make sure your children’s school bags and lunches are prepared in advance so you are not leaving in a hurry in the morning. Being rushed will only reduce your concentration at the wheel and will make you drive erratically. A little preparation can go a long way. • Never stop on the zig-zags by the school gate; it’s dangerous and you may be given a penalty notice. Once parked in a safe place ensure you let your passengers out on the pavement side. • Be prepared for children trying to get out the car in a rush especially when approaching the school gate. Use the child lock feature and ensure they are wearing their seatbelts so they

• If your children are walking to school you should still make them aware of potential hazards on the road. Make sure they look both ways before crossing and encourage them to use a pedestrian crossing if there is one.

So don’t assume because the children are older they will be more aware of what’s going on around them. WIN TICKETS TO MAGNA’S OKTOBERFEST CELEBRATIONS There’s just over a week until the second annual Oktoberfest at Magna in Rotherham and we have been given a generous 20 pairs of tickets to give away to lucky Mercury readers! The event, thought to be the biggest of its kind in South Yorkshire, will feature German-themed food, continental lagers and two Oompah bands. The lager will be served in pint-sized steins – or traditional German beer mugs, and there will be a prize of a case of champagne for the best Bavarian costume. The two-day event will run from 6pm to midnight on Friday October 2 and Saturday October 3, with tickets starting at just £5. For anyone who wants to leave the car at home there will be special buses running between Magna, Meadowhall and Rotherham town centre John Silker, chief executive of Magna, said: “We’ve got a great venue here for parties. So why go to all the way to Munich when we have our very own Oktoberfest right here on our doorstep? “Last year more than 2,000 people came over the two days and this year will be even bigger and better. Oktoberfest is now becoming part of the party calendar, much like our Christmas parties which draw in thousands each year.” As well as the Oompah bands at Oktoberfest, there will be other live entertainment, a disco, party games and serving wenches. Entry-only tickets are £5 on-line, with beer and food tokens available to

buy on the night. A Bierkeller package is available for £25 in advance and includes entry, four pints of lager, a stein to keep and a meal. More details at www.visitmagna.co.uk or contact 01709 723118 or events@magnatrust.co.uk Magna is housed in the former Templeborough steel works near junction 34 of the M1, near Meadowhall. As well as being a corporate venue, which can cater for between five and 5,000 people, Magna is an award-winning visitor attraction. It also hosts exhibitions and regular school trips. To be in with a chance of winning a pair of tickets to Oktoberfest, simply send your name and a contact telephone number to info@ mercurynewspaper.co.uk before Noon on Tuesday 29th September. Twenty entries will be drawn at random and alerted Tuesday evening.

PETS ARE PALS

EAST IS EAST ARRIVES UP NORTH Although most famously known for its highly successful 1999 film incarnation, East is East, a Salford based tale of racial identity and diversity, actually made its debut three years earlier on the stage. After several triumphant runs in London’s West End, at the beginning of this month the touring production visited Sheffield’s Lyceum theatre. Set during the early 1970s, in Lancashire’s industrial heartlands, the story focuses on George Khan, a traditional, totalitarian father and his struggle to enforce a strict Muslim upbringing on his seven unruly children. His fiery, Irish Catholic wife, Ella, is caught in the crossfire as she supports her children’s right to exercise their free will. The story plays out between the Khan’s home and the family run fish and chip shop, both of these sets had an almost permanent presence on the stage and were effectively framed by an industrial northern street scene. The combined smells of cigarette smoke and chippy grease emanating down into the audience created a convincing atmosphere to the production. (I’m pretty sure there was some kind of scent effect, either that or the staging was so convincing it caused my senses to play tricks on me.) The film is probably most fondly remembered as a comedy and this production more or less follows the same blueprint with laugh out loud highlights, such as, George’s thick Indian pronunciation (mostly whilst shouting ‘b**tard’ at a variety of family members), the visit from Mr Shah and, of course,

Saleem’s “anatomically inspired” art project. However, the play also has a serious side and explores a number of sobering themes. The comical incidents are set against a backdrop of domestic violence and civil war in Asia, and the play’s main focus, a family struggling with how different generations approach the traditions of their faith, is thoughtfully addressed. Equally as tense as it was hilarious, East is East at the Lyceum provided a very high standard of production. There were strong performances from Simon Nagra as George, who portrayed his character as iconically as Om Puri in the film version, Pauline McLynn (Father Ted’s Mrs Doyle) who played Ella and the relatively young cast who played their unruly brood ably supported them. You can find more information on all upcoming shows at The Lyceum and Crucible online at www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I usually steer clear of commercial type fisheries, but I’ve visited one this week and rather enjoyed it! Blake Hall Fisheries near Cheadle in Staffordshire is an expansive complex with four fishable pools and (I must mention it) an angler’s lodge which provides meals to die for! In fact, some of the local residents even pop in for meals, it’s that good! Plenty of car parking onsite, and you can even park behind almost all of the pegs so it is a superb place for the less able to enjoy. There are rules to abide by, so be sure to check before fishing, but go there, try it and have fun! I chose to fish the largest of the pools, Peninsula, and set out to use the final pair of rod samples which had been sent down from Sonik Sports headquarters for to give my opinion on. For this session, I would alternate between a float rod, and heavy twin tip feeder rod, and I elected to go with the feeder rod first as fish were showing at a fair range. A simple Preston running method feeder loaded with groundbait and micro-pellets was launched out around sixty yards, and I plunged the rod tip below the water to sink the line and feel the feeder down. It settled in about five feet of water, and I tensioned the tip just enough to put a slight curve in it. A pure white tip is so much easier to see, and I wasn’t surprised when it whipped around within thirty seconds! A small carp of around 3lb swiftly came to the net, and the feeder was recast to the same spot.

Bed, Breakfast & Evening Meal only £35!

This time a bream took the bait, and a slow wallowing fight resulted in a slab sided fish, also of about 3lb. A third cast gave up another small carp, and the next hour or so followed much the same pattern until the sun was fully up… I’d also been feeding a couple of margin spots immediately adjacent to two clumps of rushes which gave about two feet of water and some cover. A few grains of corn, some tiny pellets and a few dead maggots were lobbed in every couple of minutes, until eventually, a tell-tale swirl indicated some fish; time to try the float rod… A small crystal waggler, loaded with a couple of AAA shot allowed me to swing the rig out without casting. It settled until a few millimetres of bright red tip remained, then swiftly lurched to one side as a fish brushed the line… they were certainly in the area. After a minute or so, the float slid away, and a handsome roach came to hand, followed by a small perch, and so on, until I hit something a lot more solid, which didn’t particularly agree with being hooked! I was on fairly sturdy tackle, 6lb mainline and a size 14 hook-tonylon loaded with a trio of red maggots, so let the fish charge off into open water where I could play it carefully. They fight hard at Blake Hall though, and after ten minutes, I was tired, never mind the fish! Eventually, a nicely plated mid-double was netted, unhooked and returned after a mat shot; more roach, perch and gudgeon followed (is there a prettier fish?) which were interspersed with similarly sized carp to about 14lb. I ended up with countless smaller fish, and five hefty carp all of which gave the rods a good workout. I lost only one fish when the pre-tied hook to nylon parted, but overall, I’d had a very good day. Most of my fish had been hooked on the humble gentile, with corn bringing a steady stream of bream and skimmers. Both rods had performed admirably, and the feedback I’d noted was relayed back to Sonik headquarters; hopefully my input will see some fantastic new rods coming to the 2016 market, and you will enjoy them as much as I have!

LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

There was a shorter league fixture list last weekend in the County Senior League, due to the start of the League Cup. However, 12 league games still took place this week, when including the midweek games. Premier Division It has been a tough week for AFC Penistone Church, who lost back-to-back games. On Wednesday they were beaten 4-1 at home by Handsworth Parramore Reserves. Alex Rippon proved to be the difference in that game, notching a hat-trick for Handsworth. They were then beaten 2-1 at Middlecliffe Lane by Houghton Main. Ashley Emmett and Kieran Hirst were on target for Houghton Main, who are joint top, but in third place on goal difference. Swallownest FC are also joint top following their 3-1 home win over Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. Liam Davis, Jermaine Atkins and Mitch Ward were all on target for Swallownest, who sit in second on goal difference. Division One Robert Shelley scored the only goal for Caribbean Sports, as they maintained their 100% start against Byron House at Norton Playing Fields. Caribbean are just a point behind the lead of Denaby United, who have played a game more. Silkstone United are into fourth, as they beat Millmoor Juniors Reserves 4-3 at Silkstone Recreation Ground. Jamie Dixon scored a hattrick for the hosts, with Wayne Hughes also on target. A Darryl Wood brace and a Danny Lindley strike was enough to give Ecclesfield Red Rose a 3-0 home win over High Green Villa.

Division Two Two goals from Tony Bennett inspired Grimethorpe Sports to a 3-2 away win over Hemsworth Miners Welfare on Wednesday night. It was a third consecutive win for Grimethorpe and takes them into second place. Bawtry Town claimed their first point of the season midweek, with a 3-3 draw at home to Kiveton Park. However, their relief was short, as they lost 4-0 to New Bohemians on Saturday. Elsewhere in Division Two on Saturday, Swallownest FC Reserves were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves. U21 Division Defending U21 Division champions Handsworth Parramore U21 made it three wins from three played, with a 3-0 away win over Caribbean Sports U21. Goals from Josh Oxborough, Joe Yates and an own goal gave Millmoor Juniors their first win of the season, as they beat Bawtry Town U21 3-0 at Grange Park. League Cup 1st Round Stocksbridge Park Steels U21 shocked Maltby Main Reserves, by beating them 3-1 at Muglet Lane. South Kirkby Colliery U21 also put in a good showing, as they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by Denaby Main of Division One. Kiveton Park made it into the 2nd Round of the League Cup, with their first win of the season as they beat Sheffield Bankers 4-0 at Hillsborough College. Kade Garforth starred for Kiveton, scoring a hat-trick. Scott Hartley once again shone for Millmoor Juniors, scoring three times as the Rotherham outfit beat Athersley Recreation Reserves 4-0 at Grange Park. Extra-time was needed at Grimethorpe Sports Ground to separate Grimethorpe Sports and Brinsworth Whitehill. In the end, goals from Bayden Lockwood, Connor Howell, Steve Bennett, Jamie Heavey and Tony Bennett settle the tie 5-3 in Grimethorpe’s favour. Jubilee Sports made light work of beating Davy U21 at Chaucer School. Goals from Jordan Livett (3), Craig Senior (3) and Charlie Hobson (2) gave Jubilee a comfortable 8-0 win. Defending Premier Division champions Swinton Athletic saw-off Worsborough Bridge Athletic Reserves 3-1 at Park Road to advance. Handsworth Parramore Reserves of the Premier Division were made to work hard, as they took on Division One leaders Denaby United at Sandy Lane. Handsworth won the tie 6-5 with goals from Ryan Lee (2), Connor Chappell, Ryan Simmonite, Tawandi and an own goal. Despite William Hillbert scoring four goals for Treeton Terriers, they were beaten 6-5 at home by Kingstone United. Goals from Thomas Beech and Chris Meekin gave Thorpe Hesley a 2-1 win over Frecheville in the all Premier Division tie at Rockingham Community Centre. Braces from Jack Bedford and Jamie Sutton inspired North Gawber Colliery to a 6-2 win over Wombwell Main U21 Woolley Miners Welfare. Wombwell Main carried their 100% league start into the cup, by beating fellow Division One side AFC Dronfield 5-2 at home.

LATE GOAL GIVES MILLERS FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON ROTHERHAM UNITED earned their first victory of the season in dramatic circumstances as an injurytime winner put high-flying Cardiff City to the sword. Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe’s spot kick after David Marshall was red-carded for a clash with Matt Derbyshire put the Millers in charge but their joy was shortlived as Peter Whittingham levelled matters before the interval. The Millers looked like having to settle for a share of the spoils despite knocking on the door for the majority of the second half until sub Chris Maguire’s cross was deflected into his own net by Matthew Connolly with just seconds remaining to send the AESSEAL New York Stadium into raptures. Following their narrow defeat at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion in midweek, the Millers made two changes to their starting line-up for the visit of the Bluebirds as Jonson Clarke-Harris was rewarded for his strike at the AMEX with a starting berth as Chris Maguire had to settle for a substitutes berth. The AESSEAL New York faithful had their first glimpses of goalkeeper Lee Camp and Norwich loan pair OdjidjaOfoe and Tony Andreu with the latter being handed his second start at the expense of Aidy White. Despite the Millers starting the stronger, the visitors had the first sight of goal when Derbyshire’s pass was intercepted by Joe Ralls, who tried his luck from distance but his effort failed to trouble

Camp in the home goal. In the Millers’ foray of note, Joe Newell swung a tantalising corner which saw skipper Danny Collins ghost in at the far post to power a downward header which was blocked en-route to goal by Fabio De Silva. Just before the quarter hour, Joe Mattock became the first to see yellow for a mistimed tackle on Craig Noone before Newcastle loanee Sammy Ameobi soon joined him in the book for a crunching challenge on Farrend Rawson. Minutes later, Whittingham curled a outswinging corner which was met by the head of Sean Morrison, who looped a header which had Camp anxiously backtracking towards his own goal but the home stopper kept his nerve to catch underneath his own crossbar. Brazilian defender Fabio became the next to incur the wrath of the referee when he was cautioned for unceremoniously hauling over Andreu near the touchline before Whittingham and Morrison combined once again when the latter met the ex-Villa midfielder’s free-kick to head dangerously across goal but the ball fizzed harmlessly past the upright. Just before the half hour mark, ClarkeHarris flicked on Camp’s punt forward into the path of Andreu, who fired a bobbling effort from distance which stung the palms of Scottish international ‘keeper Marshall in the visitors’ goal. Moments later, the Millers came within a whisker of the opener when Rawson’s clearance was misjudged by Connolly

and Derbyshire pounced on the error to play a slide-rule ball across the box which was inches away from the outstretched leg of Clarke-Harris, who had the Cardiff goal at his mercy if he was able to make a meaningful contact. The game took a twist five minutes before the interval when Collins’ chip over the top skimmed off the turf to evade the run of Derbyshire as Marshall collected on the edge of his box and the duo seemed to clash before the visitors’ stopper appeared to flick out at the exOlympiakos striker and the referee had no hesitation in brandishing the red card to the visitors ‘keeper and point to the spot in the process. The Bluebirds immediately brought Simon Moore into the fray and his first piece of action was to pick the ball out of his own net as from the resultant spot kick, Odjidja-Ofoe kept his nerve to wrongfoot the replacement ‘keeper as he slid the ball into the bottom corner of the net. With half-time approaching, Ameobi fired a speculative effort from distance but Camp was well-stationed on his own line to snuff out the danger before Cardiff had an opportunity to get themselves back on level terms when Fabio injected pace into a visiting move following a one-two from the left flank before tumbling over the challenge of Rawson in the box and the referee again pointed to the spot before showing the yellow card to the Derby loanee. From the resultant penalty, Whittingham levelled matters as he fired into the heart of the home goal as the ball evaded the

dive of Camp. Following a slow start by both teams to the second half, the Millers had the first attack of note when Richie Smallwood’s clipped ball to the flank was hit first time by Mattock across the face of goal and although the ball was half-cleared by a retreating Bluebird, Clarke-Harris fired a volley which brought a fine reflex save from Moore before the ball dribbled to safety. Minutes later, Cardiff failed to deal with an arrowed ball forward and Andreu pounced on the loose ball before setting his sights on goal but he dragged his shot harmlessly wide of the target. Just before the hour mark, Rotherham countered with purpose and Newell swung a delightful centre which was met by the head of Clarke-Harris but his towering header failed to trouble the visitors goal. The Millers were looking the most likely and they squandered an opportunity to regain the lead when Newell’s deflected centre was headed back into the danger area by Andreu into the path of Derbyshire, who looked decidedly offside, but his point-blank header was straight down the throat of Moore. Minutes later, Cardiff failed to deal with Odjidja-Ofoe’s corner and the ball narrowly evaded the head of ClarkeHarris and in the ensuing melee, both Mattock and Collins failed to make a clean contact as they looked to swipe the ball towards goal. Minutes later, Rotherham switched play effectively and sub Emmanuel

Ledesma cut inside to fire a cross which saw Derbyshire nip infront of Connolly but his deft flick narrowly cleared the visiting crossbar. The Millers were penning the visitors deep and Ledesma’s pass saw Mattock’s cross-cum-shot deflected behind by Lee Peltier while from the resultant phase of play, Derbyshire picked the pocket of a visiting defender before firing a ferocious cross across goal and although Rawson was just yards out, he was unable to adjust his body sufficiently to turn the ball goalwards. With time running out for the hosts, Derbyshire’s run and pass in the channel paved the way for Newell to swing a first-time cross which looked tailormade for the run of Clarke-Harris, whose looping header skimmed the far post with Moore rooted to the spot. Moments later, Cardiff failed to clear decisively and the ball fell invitingly into the path of Newell, who calmly watched the ball come down before striking a fantastic volley which smashed against the inside of the post before falling to safety. However, the Millers were not to be outdone and they deservedly grabbed the winner when the ball was switched to the right flank and sub Maguire weighed up his options to fire a cross to the near post which saw Ledesma look to turn the ball home and the ball seemed to strike the leg of Connolly and the ball rolled tantalising over the line to send the home fans wild and give the Millers their first three points of the season.

JONES EARNS A POINT IN FIRST HOME GAME IN CHARGE Rob Jones took to the dugout as mananager of his first game on home soil and was looking to bounce back from last weeks defeat away at Walsall. Following the sacking of Darren Kelly last weekend, David Dunn took charge of Oldham during the interim period. Rovers took the lead initially before the visitors equalised and despite dominating the second half, a hard working Rovers side were anable to find the winner that they deserved. It was a very quiet start from both teams, however the visitors dominated the opening quarter of an hour possession wise with Rovers struggling to get hold of the ball.

Rob Jones was forced into making an early substitution as striker Andy Williams was involved in a collision and had to leave the field with concussion. Dany N’Guessan came on to replace him and support Curtis Main up front. It took over twenty minutes for the first chance of the game to fall and it was Rovers who should have taken the lead. With Aaron Taylor-Sinclair delivering a dangerous ball across the area, a deflection saw it fall to captain James Coppinger. With no option but to hit it on the volley from eight yards his sliced it over the cross bar. Minutes later however, the home side did take the lead. Cameron Stewart’s free

kick found Andy Butler at the back post whose looping header beat David Cornell to find the bottom corner. It took just ten minutes for Oldham to draw level through a controversial goal from Jonathan Burn. Burn got on the end of an Oldham corner and heading towards goal Coppinger looked to clear the ball off the line brilliantly, however the linesman signalled that the ball had crossed and the visitors had equalised. From then the game livened up and Rovers could have had two goals in seconds. Stewart almost opened his goal scoring account for the club when he hit a dipping free kick at goal from 30 yards. Heading for the top corner Cornell

JONES POST OLDHAM

concentration for their goal,” said Jones. “You can debate whether it’s a corner and if it’s crossed the line but it stands – which was disappointing but we reacted well to their goal. “Second half I thought we were magnificent and control the game from start to finish and were really dominant with and without the ball and reduced them to scraps. “If I’m being cynical, we’ve had enough chances to win the game.” A rueful Jones then turned his attentions to a growing injury list prior to the first South Yorkshire derby of the season, when Rovers travel to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United. “Andy Williams has gone to hospital with a suspected broken nose and we’re just waiting for the results,” revealed Jones. “We lost him early doors but Dany

(N’Guessan) came on I thought he was terrific and worked effortlessly to get in the positions he wanted to be in. He could have had two goals – one where he’s clean through and one with a glancing header – but he worked really well. I changed like for like and he knew what was asked of him. “Mitchell (Lund) is injured, he’s damaged his hip flexor and will be monitored as the week goes on to see where we’re at but I thought Cedric (Evina) came in today and defended well considering he was on his ‘wrong’ side. “That was the most opportunities that we’ve created for the last five or so weeks. Today we looked menacing at times and like I’ve said to the players, it’s alright looking menacing but you’ve got to finish them off.”

Rob Jones said he thought that his Doncaster side were in control once they got going against Oldham Athletic on Saturday. The similarities between the two sides was striking as two interim head coaches – in Jones and counterpart David Dunn – witnessed respective centre halves – Andy Butler and Jonathan Burn – net first half headers from set pieces. “We got the goal we warranted though through a good set piece from Cameron (Stewart) and then we had a lapse of

somehow got his fingers to it to tip it onto the cross bar. N’Guessan threw himself at the rebound but couldn’t convert. The ball then fell to Oscar Gobern whose diving header cannoned back off the bar before bouncing down on the goal line. Everyone in the crowd thought it had crossed but play went on and scores remained level. Rovers continued to look strong after coming out for the second half and they played some neat football looking for the second goal. Stewart and N’Guessan continued to cause the Oldham defence problems and with twenty minutes to go N’Guessan was inches away from giving Rovers the lead. Picking up the ball in midfield, he used his strength brilliantly to power past the defence before releasing a fierce shot on goal. Cornell again made a great save. Going into the final 15 minutes Cedric Evina created a number of chances from

the right and the defence continued to hack him down. Stewart delivered a number of good balls into the box, the first was met by the head of N’Guessan but again his effort was narrowly over the bar. This was followed by another Stewart corner, this time Butler headed at goal but again it just cleared the cross bar. With five minutes added time, it was clear Rovers weren’t going to settle for a point and another corner from Stewart caused the Oldham defence problems. Butler’s powerful header towards goal looked to be stopped by the hands of Connor Brown, however nothing was given and Gary MacKenzies follow up shot was somehow cleared off the line. It wasn’t to be and the referee blew for full time with the teams sharing the spoils.

OWLS NEWS2015/16 CARLOS DEDICATES WALLACE MASTERCLASS VICTORY TO SPRINGETT DELIVERS OWLS THREE POINTS A masterclass in delivery by Ross Wallace was the difference as Wednesday beat Fulham 3-2 at Hillsborough. The tricky winger made all three goals from set piece executions and despite the Cottagers registering twice, it was the home side that took the points. Fernando Forestieri gave the Owls an early lead before Jamie O’Hara promptly struck for Fulham. Tom Lees put Wednesday back in the driving seat in the first half and Michael Turner made it 3-1 just after the resumption. Tom Cairney made the hosts sweat by pulling a goal back midway

through the second period but the Owls held on to secure a welcome win. After a touching minute’s applause for the late Ron Springett, Wednesday almost posted the perfect start. A deep Wallace fell square on the head of Barry Bannan, whose firm header was acrobatically tipped over by Andy Lonergan. New recruit Bannan – one of four home debutants – then placed narrowly wide as Wednesday asked certainly asked more of the questions. And it was fellow new-boy Forestieri who went one better and opened the scoring on 13 minutes. Wallace delivered the

perfect corner and the Italian leapt above his marker to nod into an empty net. The Owls were well on top and dominated possession before Fulham began to cause problems, with Tim Ream blazing over on the angle from 12 yards. Ryan Tunnicliffe went closer with a long ranger and the Cottagers continued to press, reaping the reward on 23 minutes. A loose clearance landed in the path of O’Hara just outside the penalty area and his speculative half volley nestled into the far corner to equalise. But the leveller served only to galvanise Wednesday, who turned up the heat, with Wallace at the heart of the action. First the wideman sent a delicious cross in the mix that Alex Lopez headed goalwards but Lonergan pulled off a stunning reflex save. From the resulting corner, however, the keeper was powerless as Wallace’s pinpoint accuracy to the back stick led to Lees nodding in his second goal of the season to restore the advantage eight minutes before the break.

And it could have been three on the whistle when Wallace delivered yet again from the right but Atdhe Nuhiu’s effort was inches away from the target. Forestieri made way for Lucas Joao at half time but it was defender Turner who rose to the fore on 49 minutes. Dangerman Wallace sent another set piece right on the money and the towering loanee powered a driving header in off the underside of the crossbar. But any hopes the Owls had of cruising home were dashed on 67 minutes when Fulham reduced the arrears. O’Hara crossed from the right and Cairney ghosted in to head past Keiren Westwood from inside the six-yard box. The next goal was always going to be key and both sides went after it - Bannan smashed into the side netting after skilfully evading O’Hara and the industrious Kieran Lee was a whisker away from going one on one with Lonergan. Westwood denied Dan Burn at the other end but despite the best efforts of both sides’ attacks, the defences held firm and the referee called time on an entertaining encounter that the Owls deservedly won.

Carlos Carvalhal dedicated the 3-2 win over Fulham to the late Ron Springett. The Wednesday legend and Fulham product passed away last weekend and the Cottagers clash served as a memorial game in Ron’s memory. And the Owls responded in fitting style, emerging triumphant from a hugely entertaining Championship contest. Carvalhal said: “First of all, I would like to dedicate this game to Ron Springett. “He was a legend for this club and I am happy we got the win that we dedicate to him. “We deserved to win. We all know that we have playing well but needed to score the goals and

today we scored three times. “We could have got more goals because we have created the chances but we are happy to score three times.” The head coach added: “For those who saw us play at Burnley and Bolton, it is no surprise that we won the game because it has been coming. “We played well at Burnley and even better at Bolton but got only one point. It should have been much more. “After Burnley I wrote on the board in my office for the players that we lost the game but won as a team. “Today, it was our day and we did it for Ron and Sheffield Wednesday.”

BLADES NEWS2015/16 BLADES FIGHTBACK SAVES A POINT IN YORKSHIRE DERBY Bladeacoaster - the phrase coined by Nigel Adkins this week - could be used to describe this Yorkshire derby. United went 2-0 but fought back with a Chris Basham-pressured own goal and a Billy Sharp equaliser. In an entertaining

fixture, both sides had chances to win it in injury-time with Jose Baxter clearing off the line with the last touch of the game. Reed and McNulty started as boss Adkins made two changes, the duo replaced Baxter and Sammon, who dropped to the bench. Bradford

included two former Blades, McMahon and Davies, amongst their substitutes. United won two corners in the first minute but, expectedly, Bradford’s aerial prowess came to the fore early on, winning a number of free-kicks in the Blades half and a couple of corners. There was also a penalty appeal when McEveley and McArdle clashed, whilst the United skipper was booked for his second foul on Marshall. Additionally, also in the first 15 minutes, Edgar was forced to clear over his own crossbar and Howard kept out an inswinging free-kick from Evans and a header from Hanson. There was a spell of calm after the initial onslaught and United saw more of the ball

as the half hour mark approached. A move involving Reed, Sharp, Campbell-Ryce and McEveley saw McNulty’s header held under the crossbar by Jones and then Sharp put the ball in the net on 28 minutes but he was adjudged to have been offside when converting McNulty’s pass. Bradford, however, nicked the advantage on 33 minutes. From Anderson’s cross, Edgar and Cole challenged and from the loose ball, MEREDITH beat Howard in a foot race before clipping over the goalkeeper. The home side went close again when Evans shot from 25 yards but it was directly at Howard and the half ended with the Blades trying to get back on top but goalkeeper Jones was

not called into action. United made a change at the break, Alcock introduced for McEveley, with Freeman switching to left-back, but there was more disorder to follow. Liddle’s clip down the left channel saw the ball bounce and Edgar’s attempted clearance hit COLE and flew past Howard. A couple of corners and a Reed shot saw United look to get back into the game, whilst Adkins brought on Baxter and Sammon just before the hour, making it a front three. Collins headed over Baxter’s corner but the lifeline was just minutes away. Alcock’s long throw saw Basham and Meredith challenge, with the ball looping over Jones and into the far corner of the net. Basham celebrated but the goal was credited as a MEREDITH own goal. Sammon fired over the top and Bradford appealed for another penalty when Anderson’s cross hit Alcock but referee Swarbrick was unimpressed and moments later United’s equaliser arrived. On 70 minutes, Baxter’s flighted ball saw SHARP get around the back of the defence and although his first effort was blocked, he showed great composure and balance to poke home the rebound. The action continued for the near 20,000 crowd and thousands watching

on TV. Anderson’s flicked header was held by Howard and Marshall curled wide. For United, from a break, Sammon played in McNulty but he sliced wide. The last ten minutes were nervy for both sides but the Blades were on top, whilst five minutes were added as injury-time. Just in the additional period, Baxter’s inswinging free-kick saw Collins denied by an impressive Jones save, whilst the very last touch was an important once. Bradford swung in a free-kick and a corner and from the latter Hanson’s header was goalbound but Baxter cleared off the line. Bradford: Jones, Darby, Meredith, Evans (Knott 79), Marshall (James 90), Liddle, Hanson, Burke, McArdle, Anderson, Cole (Davies 79). Unused: Williams, Clarke, Leigh, McMahon. Blades: Howard, Freeman, Basham, Sharp, McNulty, Collins, Woolford (Baxter 59), McEveley (Alcock 45), Campbell-Ryce (Sammon 59), Reed, Edgar. Unused: Scougall, Higdon, Long, McGahey.
