I told my psychiatrist that I’ve been hearing voices. He told me that I don’t have a psychiatrist. Whoever said that laughter is the best medicine has obviously never had broken ribs. A customer is ordering food in an Indian restaurant. “Waiter, what’s this Chicken Tarka?” The waiter replies, “it’s the same as Chicken Tikka, but it’s a little ‘Otter.” The wife dropped a hint the other day that she wants “Something black and lacey” for Christmas. So I’ve bought her a pair of football boots. If I had a pound for every time I got suspicious... I’d wonder who the hell was paying me, and why? When I read that NASA had some big news about life on Mars, I hoped and prayed that they’d discovered some sailors fighting in the dancehall. Why do Salt n’ Shake crisps still exist? If I wanted DIY crisps I would have bought a potato. They say a dog is a man’s best friend... I’m undecided now, after the mess my Jack Russell made of his speech at my wedding.

COUNCIL SECURES FUTURE OF SPORTS CENTRE 2 minutes from the historical town of Epworth, 40 minutes from Doncaster and an hour from Leeds & Sheffield
Epworth Fields Holiday Park Newlands Lane Epworth North Lincolnshire DN9 1JA
A new operator has been chosen to run a Sheffield sports centre which, a year ago, was at risk of closure. Following a competitive tendering exercise, Sheffield City Council has selected Places for People Leisure (PfP) as the preferred bidder to operate Wisewood Sports Centre in the north of the city. PfP, which will also operate the new centres that are currently under construction at Thorncliffe and Graves, operates more than 100 leisure centres
across the country and has been UK Leisure Operator of the Year for the past three years. Final discussions will now take place between the Council and PfP prior to the contract being signed, and the centre will be handed over to PfP to operate on 1 April 2016. The Council will continue to operate the centre as normal until April. Wisewood Sports Centre had been run by Forge Valley School since 2011, but this agreement came to an end last year, when the school’s new Academy Trust decided it would not run the sports centre which could have meant closure. As a holding measure, the council agreed to step in and temporarily manage the centre, to ensure it could continue to operate until a long-term management solution was found. Proposals include future investment and the upgrade of gym facilities in the sports centre, further details of which will be made available in due course.

STANNINGTON STORY FESTIVAL MARKS SUCCESS OF LIBRARY VOLUNTEER SCHEME Saturday 26th September saw the first ever Stannington Story Festival. Five local story tellers and writers were joined by Loxley Training Band in Stannington Park to mark a full year of volunteer management in Stannington Library. A small but appreciative crowd gathered in a specially erected marquee and listened to stories from The Bible and from Shakespeare, to history from both world wars, to a talk on writing mystery stories for young people and to the inimitable Flight of the Teddy Bears which featured real teddy bears, flying. Festival organiser Bob Mynors said, “Twelve months ago, when paid librarians shut the doors for the last time, Stannington Library would have been closed forever if it weren’t for the efforts of our volunteer team. They have trained hard and worked hard, and their reward is the appreciation shown by many members of the local community. “While volunteers cannot ever fully
replace the work done by professional, qualified librarians, libraries remain important local, social spaces. So when the council decided to close the library unless volunteers stepped forward to run it, that’s what we had to do. “Of course, as volunteers, we have the flexibility to do things that would not have been possible under local authority management. We ran a murder-mystery evening in May that was great fun and helped us raise money to keep the work going. Local residents have donated books to help us expand the library’s collection. Stannington Story Festival, our anniversary event, achieved enough this year to guarantee there will be another one in 2016. If we pitch that one right, it could become a permanent part of the local social calendar.” Stannington Story Festival was organised by STAND (Stannington & District Library Group), the charity which manages the library, and benefited from a Sheffield City Council

BUS CHANGES
INFORMATION about Sheffield’s bus service changes and new, lower priced tickets has started to be published online, ahead of planned improvements to the city’s bus network being introduced on 1 November. Details are being made available at travelsouthyorkshire.com/futurechanges and full service change information will be widely publicised online, at bus stops, in interchanges and on-board buses from mid-October. Lower price multi-operator tickets for bus users offering a discount of up to 23% will also be launched to complement the new network, making it easier for passengers to get on the first bus that comes along. The price of these tickets will be frozen until at least April 2017. Sheffield Bus Partnership’s city-wide bus network was shaped using passenger travel patterns and community feedback from around 2,500 people, following public consultation in July.

PROSE BRING A SLICE OF MANCHESTER TO DONCASTER Manchester has a righteous tradition of insisting on being the UK musical capital (apart from Sheffield of course). But even the most swaggering evangelist for the city would have to admit that the old place has been a bit quiet lately. So with the poise of anybody worthy of claiming the keys to the city, all of that’s about to change. Meet Prose, organic-acoustic-hiphop three-piece who are coming for your soul. From the mean(ish) streets of Stretford, via a yellow brick road of sweat, struggle, melody and pummelling beats. They’ve got very big hearts, but you probably wouldn’t like them when they’re angry. Their debut EP ‘What If?’ is released on October 16th and they’ll be visiting the area when they play the Diamond Lounge in Doncaster on Saturday 10th October. Prose defy genre because in the
fiercest way, they are a genre of their own. They take the best of what has come before in the city; the emotional eloquence of Oasis; the street poetry of John Cooper Clarke; the psychedelic ambition of The Stone Roses and the spirit of when New Order looted the NYC gay clubs of the early 80s and invented dance music as we know it. For good measure, they’ll also namecheck Tupac, Hendrix, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alanis Morrissette, Nirvana and Queen. At the centre of all this is Mike Murray, a putting new bite into the ‘white rapper’ genre (™) with a whose machine-gunning rhymes describe life on the streets and love on the dole in all their grit and glory, a northern Mike Skinner with a skill for both the profound and the daft. Together with production and melody from cousin Dave Royle and the pair’s lifelong friend Lee Royle, they’re ready to take back the city. As an opening shot, the trio offer up ‘Run With Faith’, a modernday parable of a down-on-his-luck bluesman who gets saved by the simplest of lessons - that it’s nice to be nice. The song expands on the true story of a Market Street beggar who returned a woman’s wallet without pocketing the cash, which led to coverage in the Manchester Evening News which sparked a pay-it-forward campaign that got him off the streets. The grit-and-optimism moral of the story plays right into the beating heart of PROSE’s
prose. Mike still has the newspaper clipping somewhere. Joining this hyper-infectious earworm are the other three tracks that make up the trio’s debut EP ‘What If?’ On ‘Mountains’ they deliver a Gallagher-worthy refrain as Mike plucks at his own heartstrings, while ‘Headsick’ throws out another curveball, channelling psychedelic rock with a towering guest vocal from early supporter Emeli Sande. But it’s on the delicate, bluesy title track that Mike offers a brutally naked account of his own life story; the all-too-common tale of a violent, drug-abusing father and a mother who was unable to cope. When she found the salvation of a new life in Canada, his life could have one of two ways. Mike’s wit and spirit meant he swerved young offenders, and along with producer cousin Dave Stone and guitarist Lee Royle, harnessed his talent and found the determination to walk out of his job at a PPI call centre and focus on music full time. That Jerry Maguire moment paid off. Three years and a few boring music industry processes later, Prose are ready for their close-up. Not just proud, they’re compelled to put a rocket back up the city that made them who they are, and do it on their own terms. Because there is, of course, no place like home. And Prose are a band to write home about, wherever you’ve laid your hat. Prose play the Diamond Lounge on Saturday 10th October with support from Cattle and Cane. Tickets can be found at www. diamondlive.co.uk
It has been a ground-breaking year for young singersongwriter Dan Owen. The 23-year old has gone from playing to tiny audiences in backrooms of pubs to a run of impressive festivals dates, including Bushstock, The Great Escape, Glastonbury and now Sheffield legendary Leadmill on October 9th. Having clocked up hundreds shows to date, the Shrewsburynative is now on his own first headline UK tour which started in September. He has been handpicked by the criticallyacclaimed Rae Morris as support for her upcoming Autumn tour (of which his Leadmill date is part of), including London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire on 8th Oct. Dan has also been chosen to be part of the well respected Communion New Faces Tour. When Dan first started out on the live circuit, an audience member filmed his live cover of ‘Ballad Of Hollis Brown’ – this is now sitting on 500k views on YouTube.
Following those early live shows, he went on to win Best Young Artist at the British Blues Awards and a surprising accolade came from another audience member, Mick Fleetwood (of Fleetwood Mac), who hailed Dan “at the forefront of the new wave in British singer-songwriter talent”. Now, stepping away from the blues and writing new material, Dan is getting ready to release his
first EP late this year – produced by Cam Blackwood (George Ezra). You can listen to his new track ‘Fall Like A Feather’ on Spotify plus their is a a live version on YouTube. Dan Owen (Supporting Rae Morris) The Leadmill Friday 9th October www.leadmill.co.uk

UK’S No1 SINATRA CELEBRATES OL’ BLUE EYES’ CENTENARY The world’s No1 Sinatra is coming to Sheffield to celebrate the centenary of the greatest singer of the 20th century with hit stage show Frankly Sinatra on Friday 4th December at Sheffield City Hall. Featuring the swing, the swagger and the velvet vocals of Frank Sinatra in concert, enjoy an unmissable evening with Stephen Triffitt. Acclaimed worldwide as the master of his craft, Stephen created the role of Ol’ Blue Eyes in the original West End production of The Rat Pack Live from Las Vegas that toured the USA, Canada and Europe. He has also retraced Frank’s golden footsteps, starring in three seasons at Las Vegas’ legendary Sands Casino. The lavish production is brought to the stage by Easy Theatres, the theatre show specialists responsible for hit touring stage productions like Magic of Motown, Thank You for the Music, An Evening of Burlesque and A Night of Dirty Dancing. The company’s MD, Michael Taylor, says Sinatra’s centenary is to be celebrated in “swinging style” with a nationwide tour of brand-new stage show Frankly Sinatra in 2015. “There’s no better Sinatra,” says Michael. “Stephen Triffitt has sold out the London Palladium twice and the Royal Festival Hall with solo concert shows. “In Frankly Sinatra he skilfully dips in and out of character to tell the fascinating tale of the greatest vocalist and most charismatic performer of our time.” The critics agree. The London Evening Standard describes Stephen’s resemblance to Sinatra as “Unsettlingly perfect”.
With sculpted hair, twinkling blue eyes, and shiny black patent leather shoes, Stephen is famed for performing classic hits Fly Me to the Moon; Mack the Knife; New York, New York; My Way; That’s Life; Under My Skin; Lady is a Tramp; My Kind of Town; All the Way and Luck Be a Lady with all Frank’s laid back charm. Michael says: “Stephen not only walks the walk, he talks the talk. Combining delicious vocals with a playful, laid-back stage presence, he faithfully recreates Frank’s trademark stage persona with consummate ease.” Backed by the sound of big band swing, Frankly Sinatra brings the Chairman of the Board to town to celebrate the centenary of Frank Sinatra with StephenTriffitt, described by the show’s creators as “frankly the best thing since Sinatra himself”. ‘LADIES WHO LUNGE’ SIGN UP TO LIGHT THE NIGHT IN SUPPORT OF REGIONS CANCER HOSPITAL A group of ladies from Sheffield have signed up to a sponsored walk this October to help raise funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. The fun-loving group of friends, who meet every Monday night for an Aerobics class, will join Light the Night this Saturday on the 3rd October in support of Weston Park Hospital, after two of them received treatment there. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. Now into its fourth year, Light the Night, which is being started by World Champion Heptathlete, Cancer Charity Patron, Jessica Ennis- Hill, invites entrants to enjoy a 4.5k walk through Ecclesall Woods alongside friends and family whilst raising vital funds for the cancer charity. The group of 8, who are calling themselves ‘The Cupcakes’ to represent the warm, fuzzy feeling a plate of cupcakes brings to people, have vowed to take part in the event, after members, Jayne and Noreen battled cancer. Aerobics Instructor, Jayne Morley (43) from Hillsborough, who has helped organise the groups fundraising efforts is keen to say thank you to Weston Park Hospital after receiving treatment there 6 years ago for breast cancer. In 2009, after noticing a lump in her arm, Jayne
visited her GP for reassurance before being sent for blood tests followed by X-rays and a biopsy. Just a couple of days after returning from holiday, Jayne was given the devastating diagnosis of advanced breast cancer and was referred for a bone scan to determine how far the cancer had spread. But in another shocking turn of events, it was confirmed that Jayne was in fact a few weeks pregnant and couldn’t go ahead with the scan or subsequent treatment whilst carrying a baby. “I had to make a very tough life-changing decision quickly.” Said Jayne, “It was a given that without treatment my chances of survival were next to none, so heart-breaking though it was, I had to have a termination.” Following her diagnosis and the tragic loss of her baby, Jayne underwent surgery followed by Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy treatment at Weston Park Hospital. Jayne continued, “It was an extremely difficult time for me and my husband, but we made it through, and I’m living proof that there can be light at the end of the tunnel.” “I simply wouldn’t be here without Weston Park Hospital and taking part in Light the Night surrounded by my closest friends will be a chance for us to support others going through similar situations.” Over the years Light the Night, which has been sponsored by IML Labels & Plastics Ltd. has helped raise over £100,000 for the cancer charity and enabled the funding of various projects including the expansion of research studies, improving the way cancer treatments are delivered and the ongoing care provisions of patients and their families affected by cancer. To sign up for Light the Night visit www. lightthenight.org.uk or call the charity office on 01142265370.

SMOKING IN CARS - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW From Midnight on October 1st new legislation comes into effect in England and Wales that will ban drivers or their passengers from smoking in the presence of minors.
It is no surprise that the majority of motorists – smokers and non-smokers alike – have welcomed new laws to ban smoking in the car with children. There are around 10 million smokers in the UK, and while the new legislation – which come into effect in England and Wales on 1 October 2015 – will benefit the health of children nationwide - it could result in millions of motorists being unfairly penalised due to lack of knowledge. So if you are yet to kick the habit, or regularly drive smoking passengers, what do you need to know? Private vehicles The new laws introduce an offence which applies strictly to private vehicles that are enclosed. If you have a convertible then, providing that the roof is down completely and stowed, it will not be classed as an enclosed vehicle and you can smoke even with minors in the car with you.

The same will not be the case if you have a sunroof open and you would be committing an offence if you smoke with a minor in the car. Don’t think you can get away with smoking with the door of the car open as this is still treated as an enclosed vehicle for the purpose of the offence, regardless of whether the engine of the car is running. The new rules apply to all sorts of vehicles aside from regular cars such as motorhomes, campervans and caravans but only when they are being used as a vehicle - the law does not apply when they are being used as living accommodation.
Children Your teenagers may think and act as though they are in their mid-twenties but if you have a person in an enclosed vehicle and they are not yet 18, you would be committing the offence if you smoke with them in the car with you.
new law only applies to tobacco cigarettes including roll ups.
Are there any defences? Aside from disputing the allegation that you or another passenger was smoking, or in the case of failing to stop someone from smoking, that you did not know or that you took reasonable steps to stop your passenger from smoking, there may be little to say in your defence, other than to prove it was not reasonable to comply with the duty to stop a passenger from smoking. If it is your word against a police officer, you may find this an uphill struggle.
Penalties The police will have the power to deal with the offence by way of a fixed penalty of £50. If disputed and convicted at court, the maximum It wasn’t me! If it wasn’t you smoking but you are a driver or fine for the offence of smoking in an enclosed vehicle with children could be £200. provisional driver, then it won’t cut it to say it However, controversially, if convicted of wasn’t your fault. It is the driver’s responsibility to stop someone the offence of failing to stop a person from else from smoking in an enclosed car with smoking in an enclosed vehicle, the fine could under-18s. If you don’t, then you will be be as much as the maximum of £2,500. liable to a fine just as if you had been smoking yourself. Finally, introducing the new laws on the same day as Stoptober begins may mean a E-cigarettes record number of people signing up to stop You will be legal if you choose to smoke e-cigarettes in the car with a minor as the smoking for good than in previous years.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
A mixed week this time, I’ve had a session fishing for carp and caught only bream, booked some show tickets, (it’s that time of year again) and been invited to a junior charity match to present some trophies… Match fishing is not something I currently partake of; I have done in the past, but it’s not really my thing anymore. I started my match fishing career (I use the term loosely!) in 1981 aged just eleven years old, and won my first trophy, a third place, less than a year later. I remember it well, I caught twenty two roach for a grand total of eight and a quarter ounces from North Lake, JCB, Rocester, a single maggot on a size twenty hook, up in the water using a float rod bought from Woolies! I also fondly remember the tutelage of a gentleman named Stuart Whiston, who patiently sat behind me offering advice throughout… and it meant an awful lot to me, so I’m pleased to be invited to the Match Aid Junior Champion of Champions Final this weekend at Cudmore in Staffordshire. My match fishing didn’t really progress; I won the Juvenile Cup on three consecutive occasions, the Specimen Trophy twice, and then I reached ‘adult’ age which meant going up against anglers who never fished anywhere else, and fished the same way, week in, week out. I got banned soon after, as did my brother, as we had worked out that dumping a bag of sweetcorn in the margins and waiting for carp to arrive before catching them to amass match winning weights was soon going to upset the elderly committee members used to winning or framing each week by catching roach on casters, so we were asked to leave… They didn’t present the trophies either that year for some reason… My interest in match angling was curtailed… Some years later, and a member of the Fire Service, I was asked to fish matches once more, so duly

obliged; more for the social side of it than anything else, but how things had changed! I regard myself as reasonably competent (no more) but was somewhat surprised to have anglers look down their noses at me when I revealed I didn’t own a pole! Shock, horror! As the brightly clad sponsored anglers guffawed to their mates about the itinerant newcomer, and set up their ultra-long expensive poles, I sat down and threaded the line through my rod rings before setting up my chair…yes, chair! The match commenced, and I performed well enough to bag some points, and after finishing the aggregate series, I’d collected enough points to finish second overall. A year later, still without a pole, I won, as I did the following year, despite some last minute shenanigans from a fellow competitor who reckoned the result shouldn’t have stood as during the final closely contested match, he had an imaginary call requiring him to leave half way through. Honestly, it was nothing to do with him getting battered off the next peg by my long range feeder approach, so I believed him…. I didn’t laugh either when I found out he had backed over his pole in the car park…. The year ended with a sound team performance to win the UK Fire Services National, so I retired there and then, at the top! (Despite having a nightmare and being carried by the rest of the team!) After that, I vowed never to fish a match again, until I decided to try my luck at the British Lure Angling Championships last year. I studied the qualifiers until I discovered that one particular event offered a realistic chance of getting to the prestigious final to be held at Chew Reservoir in Somerset. I travelled to Wigan, fished against a low number of other anglers, and scraped through in third place… A 300 mile round trip to the BLAC final venue, five hours getting soaked in a boat, a total of nine almost completely fishless hours, and then I realised that matches just aren’t for me! Having had a fairly muted match career then, I’m keen to see how it is approached by competent juniors who probably have a grounding in pole fishing (I still don’t own one) and can teach me something new. I’m always keen to learn, and despite having no intention of ever owning a pole, I’m sure that there will much to take from watching them fish, and then presenting the most successful with a nice trophy to remember their day by. Hopefully, they will still be able to remember the day in years to come, and it will remain as clear for them as my first trophy does for me, and between now and then, they will enjoy their angling as much as I have…after all, that’s what it’s all about!

Premier Division Goals from Adam Stead, Kieran Hirst and Jake Ford gave Houghton Main a 3-0 away win over Thorpe Hesley at the Rockingham Community Centre. Houghton Main are without defeat since their opening day game with Millmoor Juniors (six games ago) and lead the way in the Premier Division. Hot on the heels of Houghton Main are Swallownest FC, after their hard-fought 3-2 away win over Wickersley FC. Adam Ruthven starred for Swallownest scoring all three of their goals. Swallownest sit in second place, only by way of an inferior goal differential to that of Houghton Main. Millmoor Juniors did lead the Premier Division before the weekend, but were ruthlessly dispatched 4-0 at home by Oughtibridge WMFC on Saturday. Goals from Ross Brown (2), Scott Ellis and Joe Appleyard gave Oughtibridge the impressive victory, consigning Millmoor to their first loss of the season. Frecheville claimed their fourth win in five games, with a 1-0 home win over Jubilee Sports. In those four wins Frecheville have kept three clean sheets and sit in fourth. Swinton Athletic put in a fine team display as they beat Athersley Recreation Reserves 4-0 at Mexborough Athletic Ground. Markus Clare and Ryan Doxey both scored twice for the defending champions and gives them a win that moves them into mid-table. It must be noted that Swinton have played the fewest games in the league so far. Handsworth Parramore Reserves claimed their third win in four games, with a 4-1 away win over North Gawber Colliery.

of the season, as they lost 3-2 to Wombwell Main at Old Road. Wombwell have won all three of their league games since relegation in the summer. Third placed Kingston United were also defeated, as they lost 2-1 at the Fleets against Sheffield Bankers. The win is the Bankers’ first of the season. With no-one in the top four winning this week, Ecclesfield Red Rose had the opportunity to close the space between them and the promotion places; a chance they gladly took with a 3-1 home win over Millmoor Juniors Reserves. Ecclesfield sit in fifth, just three points off the pace. Davy won their third game in four, with a hard-earned 4-3 home win over newly promoted Byron House. Elsewhere, AFC Dronfield were 5-2 winners over High Green Villa.
Division Two Kiveton Park, fresh from their League Cup win, pushed league leaders Brinsworth Whitehill close at Kiveton Park Miners Welfare Ground. It was all in vain though as goals from Mattey Blakemore and Greg Mason gave Brinsworth a 2-1 win, their seventh already this term. New Bohemians lead the challenge against Brinsworth, after their impressive 6-1 win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves. New Bohemians lie in second, four pints off the lead, but having played a game more. Swallownest FC Reserves moved into third position, with a 3-0 home win over North Gawber Colliery Reserves. Houghton Main Reserves ended a run of three games without a win, as they beat Treeton Terriers 3-2 at Sheffield Park Academy. U21 Division Stocksbridge Park Steels U21 extended their 100% start to two games, with an emphatic 5-0 win over Millmoor Juniors U21 at the Look Local Stadium. Wombwell Main U21 moved into second place, following their convincing 9-0 defeat of Davy FC U21 at Wombwell Main Cricket Club. League Cup 1st Round Goals from Mark Crossfield, Ross Nettleton and Mitch Savage made sure AFC Penistone Church suffered no shock against an in-form Caribbean Sports at the Memorial Ground. The Premier Division outfit ran out 3-1 winners to put them in the draw for the 2nd Round. The all U21 Division tie between Bawtry Town U21 and Handsworth U21 at Doncaster Athletic Arena fell in Handsworth favour 5-2. Silkstone United made light-work of their away tie against South Kirkby Colliery. It was an excellent team performance from Silkstone, whose goals were from Wayne Hughes, Jamie Dixon, Lewis Akeister, Dan Duffy, Matthew Reynolds and an own goal. Elsewhere, Sheffield Lane Top of Division Two booked their place in the 2nd Round, with a 3-2 away win over Athersley Recreation U21. Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves showed no mercy, as they beat Caribbean Sports U21 8-0 at Caribbean Sports Club. RUFC CLUB STATEMENT Following a meeting between the Chairman and Manager this morning it was decided Rotherham United Football Club would part company with First Team Manager Steve Evans and his Assistant Paul Raynor. During the said meeting it became clear that both parties at the present time wished to head in a different direction. The meeting was at all times positive, constructive and straightforward. It was clear that the Chairman and the management team only wanted what they felt was best for Rotherham United Football Club. The Club would like to place on record our thanks to Steve and Paul for their huge contribution over the last three and a half years, it has been simply an incredible journey. Moving on Eric Black will assume first team duties for the time being. It has all come as a surprise but Rotherham United must move forward and the search for a new First Team Manager will begin immediately. Replacing Steve Evans and Paul Raynor will indeed be a strenuous task for the board. Rotherham United Football Club will always welcome Steve and Paul whether as an opposition management team or as supporters of our fantastic football club. The Club will be making no further statement until this appointment has been made.
BACK TO BACK VICTORIES FOR THE MILLERS ROTHERHAM United earned backto-back victories for the first time since they returned to the Championship as they put Birmingham City to the sword following a superb display in the West Midlands. Matt Derbyshire came back to haunt his former club with a first-half opener before Norwich loanee Tony Andreu capped off a polished display with a well-taken second to secure the Millers’ first victory over the Blues since 1989. Following their last-gasp victory over Cardiff City last time out, the Millers fielded an unchanged line-up for their visit to St Andrew’s. Scottish international Kirk Broadfoot was named among the substitutes bench for the first time this season after the completion of his suspension while club skipper Lee Frecklington was again ruled out because of a calf injury. The Millers were quick out of the blocks and Andreu looked to weave a way to goal but his shot was blocked by Jonathan Spector before Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe pounced on the loose ball to fire a snap volley from the edge of the box which stung the palms of Tomasz Kuszczak. At the other end, the Millers failed to deal with a long punt forward from Kuszczak and Jon Toral took advantage of the indecision to drill a low effort from distance which had Lee Camp at full stretch before Paul Caddis squeezed

between two defenders to burst into the box but his effort was blocked en-route to goal. Minutes later, Camp’s clearance was superbly flicked on by Jonson ClarkeHarris into the advancing run of Andreu, but the Frenchman dragged his shot well wide of the target before Clarke-Harris was again the architect in the Millers’ next attack when his lay-off paved the way for Joe Newell to try his luck from distance but his speculative half-volley blazed over the bar. Just past the quarter hour, highly-rated Demarai Gray embarked on a menacing run and shot with failed to trouble Camp in the visitors goal before Clarke-Harris made something out of nothing to pluck a long ball out of the sky before drilling a low effort which was arrowing towards the bottom corner until Kuszczak’s late intervention. The home side were had indebted to the Polish stopper for keeping the scores level when fine interplay from the Millers’ involving Andreu and Odjidja-Ofoe paved the way for Clarke-Harris to give Newell a glimpse of goal and the ex-Peterborough midfielder curled a right-footed effort which brought the best out of the home ‘keeper, who parried the ball to safety. Just past the half-hour mark, the Millers were rewarded for their pressure when they broke the deadlock following a superb counter attack. The Millers picked up the ball deep in their own half and with Odjidja-Ofoe leading the cavalry charge, Newell advanced menacingly into the Blues half before playing a superb ball over the top and Derbyshire managed to get a yard on his marker and evade the offside trap to control superbly before volleying into the bottom right hand corner of the goal giving Kuszczak no chance.
The visitors were buoyed by the breakthrough and with the Blues defence at sixes and sevens, Derbyshire had a header blocked before trying an acrobatic effort which fizzed narrowly over the home bar. The home side were struggling to find their rhythm but Donaldson had a sniff of goal when he had Farrend Rawson in a daze to spin smartly in the box but Danny Collins put his body on the line to snuff out the danger before David Cotterill raced down the left flank before pulling the ball back to Gray, who looked a likely scorer, but he fluffed his lines when he blazed over the bar. With half-time approaching, Derbyshire was bundled over by the touchline and from the resultant free-kick, Odjidja-Ofoe curled a superb centre which was cleared by a retreating Blues defender and Newell struck an instinctive effort which whistled narrowly over the home crossbar. The Blues were quickly on the offensive after the interval and Gray waltzed past Lewis Buxton and Odjidja-Ofoe before striking an effort which was blocked by Richie Smallwood before Michael Morrison rose highest from the resultant corner but Andreu was well-stationed to hack clear from near his own line. Moments later, the lively Gray fired a dangerous centre which Donaldson almost turned home at the back post before the visiting fans’ had their hearts in their mouths when Cotterill’s corner saw Toral climb with Camp, with the former heading goalwards but the referee adjudged that the Blues forward had used his arm for leverage and a foul was awarded. Just before the hour mark, Clarke-Harris was hauled over by Spector on the edge of the box but Andreu failed to make the home side pay as he fired the resultant free-kick well over the bar before Andreu’s
slide-rule pass gave Odjidja-Ofoe a sight of goal but he fired over the bar from just outside the box. However, the Millers stunned the home faithful when doubled their advantage with 26 minutes remaining when Andreu scored his first goal for the club. There looked little danger until Stephen Gleeson dallied in possession on the edge of the box and Andreu was on his toes to rob him of possession before ghosting into the box to fire a low left-footed effort which arrowed past the outstretched hand of Kuszczak to nestle in the bottom corner of the net. The Blues sparked to life and sub Andrew Shinnie had an opportunity to drag the home side back into the game but he fired over before Gray blazed an effort well wide moments later. Caddis dragged a cross-cum-shot across the face of goal before Rawson made a superb tackle on Donaldson to prevent the home side striking goalwards in the home side’s next attack. Collins showed his experience to divert Gray’s dangerous centre to safety before Rotherham wasted an opportunity to seal the deal when sub Danny Ward and Odjidja-Ofoe led a three-on-two situation but the move lost momentum as Andreu fired over from a promising position. With time running out, Danny Ward skipped to the byline before playing an inviting centre which almost saw Derbyshire add a third but he missed his kick with the goal at his mercy before Odjidja-Ofoe fired narrowly wide but it mattered little as the Millers earned their first away victory of the campaign to send the vocal travelling contingent home happy.
ROVERS LOSE OUT IN LOCAL DERBY AGAINST BLADES It was a scrappy start at a packed out Bramall Lane in this local derby, with neither side able to keep hold of the ball for any length of time. Keshi Anderson made a bright start on his debut for the Rovers and caused the United defence problems just a few minutes in. Taking on three defenders he was able to get an early shot at goal, but it was well blocked by the defender. The home side grew into the game and gradually started to enjoy more possession. Ryan Flynn was almost put through one on one but a perfectly timed sliding tackle from Andy Butler denied him breaking through and getting his shot away. Minutes later Nigel Adkins side took the lead through captain Chris Basham. Craig
Alcock delivered a fierce ball into the box and hitting the ball on the volley, Basham was there to smash it home, a great finish. The visitors responded well however and both Andy Williams and Anderson had chances blocked in quick succession. Rovers did enjoy a spell of enjoy possession which frustrated the home side, and good work from Cedric Evina then won them a free kick in a dangerous position 25 yards out. With Aaron Taylor-Sinclair and Cameron Stewart standing over the ball, it was Stewart who stepped up. His curling free kick went over the wall and beat Mark Howard in the United goal to make the score 1-1. Conor Sammon should have put the home side in front as he found space to shoot
driving forwards, looking to slide the ball into the bottom corner from a tight angle his shot was inches wide. However on the next attack he made no mistake in scoring. With Paul Coutts crossing the ball in from the right Sammon was there to side foot it in from point blank range, giving the home side the lead. Shortly before half time things went from bad to worse for Rovers as Gary MacKenzie was shown a red card for a high foot on Craig Alcock, in what looked to be a fifty-fifty challenge in the United area. Sheffield United came out in the second half and could have had two goals in a minute, both chances coming from Sammon again. Driving towards goal the

derby – it magnifies, so there’s a lot of questions being asked about them as a group and as individuals and I’m not accepting it.” Jones cut a frustrated figure despite his side registering their first away league goal of the campaign through Cameron Stewart. Crystal Palace loanee Keshi Anderson made his league debut and special praise was reserved for the twenty-year old. “I knew it was going to be difficult when I took the reins three weeks ago but when you’re constantly having to say the same things over and over again and they’re not sinking in with individuals then you have a problem,” said Jones. “I knew it was going to be difficult and I’m not going to shirk away from that. I
knew it would be tough and I’ve made it my aim to turn it around. “He (Anderson) looked very bright and is one of the few positives from today. He started the game really well and could have possibly scored with a deflected shot. He got the free kick for our goal, his feet looked good and he looked aggressive. “He looked like he’s desperate to do well and all those traits are the reasons I brought him here. He’s gone from nonleague to Premier League very quickly, a lot of teams have tried taking him and it’s a great steal from our point of view. Alan Pardew has been magnificent in getting the deal done quickly and he’s been like a breath of fresh air so long may that continue.”
Rob Jones pulled no punches when he came to his assessment of Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of local rivals Sheffield United. The interim manager watched on as his side made what he termed “basic errors.” “It’s taken a while to sink in,” Jones said in his post match interview. “We spent a lot of time in the dressing room after the game discussing various things. “We can hide behind the fact that we went down to ten men but when you provide so many basic errors and wrong decisions – especially in a game like this with a hot atmosphere, big pitch, local
forward hit a curling effort from distance which Stuckmann could only stand and watch, however it cannoned back off the post. Less than a minute later it was Sammon again who was denied by James Coppinger as he cleared his header off the line. The Blades had a penalty appeal turned down when substitute Che Adams broke into the box and looked to be bought down by the trailing leg of Aaron TaylorSinclair. However the referee said no and showed the United man a yellow card for diving. Rob Jones introduced Richard Chaplow, Harry Forrester and Oscar Gobern to the game hoping they would have an impact but with United having a one man advantage Rovers struggled to cause a threat. Thorsten Stuckmann was called into action late on who, despite conceding
two goals so far, had very little to do all afternoon. With former Rover Billy Sharp getting on the end of a long ball in the box, he was able to shoot and fire at goal forcing Stuckmann to make a great save. With just over ten minutes to play the home side put the game to bed and it was Sharp who made it 3-1. James Coppinger’s poor back pass forced Stuckmann quickly off his line but Sharp was there first to intercept, before rounding the keeper and tapping in from close range. Moments later Sharp almost had a second when he cut inside from the left again firing a low shot at goal, but Stuckmann made another excellent save. With Rovers struggling to get hold of the ball the referee finally blew for full time and the game ended 3-1.

BLADES NEWS2015/16 BLADES BACK TO WINNING WAYS IN LOCAL DERBY United’s dominance over local rivals Doncaster Rovers continued as Nigel Adkins’ side returned to winning ways. After last season’s double over Rovers, goals from captain Chris Basham, Conor Sammon, his first at Bramall Lane, and
Billy Sharp, his sixth successive goal in league games, secured three valuable points. For the visitors, Gary MacKenzie was sent off in the first half as United returned to the top six. Boss Adkins made six changes to his team ahead of the derby. McEveley (pelvis) and
Campbell-Ryce (ankle) missed out through injury. Coutts made his first appearance of the season, whilst there were first league starts for Alcock and Flynn. Basham took the captain’s armband. The personnel on show would have left some supporters wondering about the formation but it was quickly evident that the management team were persisting with 4-4-2, Coutts and Flynn in wide midfield roles and Alcock and Wallace acting as the full-backs. Early on, Anderson escaped Baxter and saw his shot hit Collins, resulting in a corner, from which an unmarked TaylorSinclair headed over at the back post. Despite this, United made a bright start. Flynn had
two efforts blocked, whilst Baxter scuffed wide after the visitors could only half-clear a Wallace cross. United’s bright start and neat passing was rewarded on 17 minutes. Alcock got forward down on the right and his near post cross saw BASHAM smash home an unstoppable volley from six yards. Doncaster hit back, Collins kicked away from a Williams effort before the leveller arrived on 27 minutes. A free-kick on the edge of the box saw STEWART clip over the wall and just inside the near post, despite Howard getting a hand to the ball. The Blades responded positively, though. Sammon attached himself to Basham’s pass and although he held off his marker and
drew the goalkeeper, his shot was across the goalline. The loan striker’s first Lane goal, however, was moments away. On 35 minutes, Alcock’s pace put Doncaster on the back foot and from a pin-point cross from Coutts, SAMMON sidefooted home at the back post. Howard helped Evina’s effort over the crossbar as Rovers looked to level again, but the visitors were soon hampered following one of their own corners. MacKenzie’s attempt to prevent Alcock clearing was deemed dangerous by referee Heywood, who showed the Donny defender a straight red card. Apart from another free-kick from Stewart, which flew into the Kop, there was little to report before the break as United protected the lead. Both sides made a change at the break, Freeman replacing Alcock for United, and inside the opening four minutes, Sammon twice beat goalkeeper Stuckmann but could not extend the advantage. After robbing Chaplow, he fired against a post, and then, from the resulting corner, his header was cleared off the line by Coppinger. Wallace cut in from the left and shot at Stuckmann as United remained the attacking force, whilst Adkins used all his replacements with around 30 minutes left, Reed and Adams introduced.
Basham and Adams picked up bookings but United remained the dominant force. From Reed’s ball over the defence, Sharp’s run and shot was saved by Stuckmann, whilst an effort from Adams was deflected wide by Forrester and a Collins header from a corner was wide. A third and decisive goal, however, was handed to the Blades on 79 minutes. Coppinger, standing in at right-back, played a short back-pass which SHARP beat Stuckmann to, rounded the goalkeeper and slotted into the empty net at the Kop end. Sharp stung Stuckmann’s palms in the final ten minutes and Reed shot wide as United continued to force Doncaster back. In the closing stages, the visitors failed test the Blades backline, even with a couple of late corners, as United made it three successive wins over the Keepmoat side. Blades: Howard, Basham, Flynn, Coutts (Adams 61), Sharp, Baxter (Reed 55), Collins, Sammon, Alcock (Freeman 45), K Wallace, Edgar. Unused: McNulty, Woolford, Long, McGahey. Doncaster: Stuckmann, Evina, Butler, Wellens (Gobern 71), Williams, MacKenzie, Keegan (Chaplow 45), TaylorSinclair, Anderson, Coppinger, Stewart (Forrester 55).

OWLS NEWS2015/16 LATE JOAO STRIKE GIVES OWLS VITAL PART OF THIRD VICTORY IN A WEEK THE TEAM The Owls posted their first away league win, beating Brentford 2-1 in a dramatic encounter at Brentford. Atdhe Nuhiu’s penalty eight minutes before half time opened the scoring but the Bees hit back after the break through Alan Judge. Then, just as the game was heading for a draw, substitute Lucas Joao planted a late, late winner to seal all three points. Both sides, though, were reduced to ten men, with James Tarkowski seeing red for Brentford and substitute Jeremy Helan
following suit for the Owls. It was back to Championship duty for Wednesday following their Capital One Cup heroics at Newcastle in midweek and they took the confidence in the camp into the early stages at Griffin Park. Dangerous duo Ross Wallace and Nuhiu linked up well, with the latter executing a diving header that flew straight down the throat of David Button. Wallace then sent in a long ranger that forced Button into an unorthodox punched
save before Nuhiu headed narrowly wide. Livewire Barry Bannan served a delicious centre that just evaded Marco Matias at the back post midway through the first half as Wednesday sought the advantage. And they almost got exactly that on 24 minutes when a pinpoint corner from Wallace was met with power by Nuhiu but the striker’s header thumped against the crossbar and out. The Bees had a rare attack that ended with Jake Bidwell brushing the crossbar following a terrific Alan Judge feed – but then the home side were hit by a double blow. On 36 minutes, a sublime ball from Bannan landed at the feet of Nuhiu ten yards from goal, who was about to pull the trigger before being upended by Tarkowski. The referee pointed to the spot and after consulting with his assistant duly dismissed the defender and Nuhiu scored from 12 yards. Brentford needed the half time whistle and regrouped to ask more questions in the second period. Judge hit a curling free
kick into the danger zone just before the hour that evaded a packed penalty area and smacked against the post. But the Owls fought fire with fire and introduced Joao from the bench to supplement the attack. The move had the desired effect as Brentford’s impetus was stifled, with Wednesday enjoying more of the play. But the Bees still probed and Keiren Westwood was alert to deny Bidwell after the full back charged forward on the overlap. The hosts continued to press and were rewarded 14 minutes from time. Judge neatly controlled a deep diagonal ball and struck a sweet shot right into the far corner to haul Brentford level. Moments later, Wednesday were reduced to ten men when Helan picked up his second yellow card and it was backs to the wall for the closing stages. Lasse Vibe blasted over the bar with the goal at his mercy but still there was time for drama at the other end in the last minute as Joao capitalised on a defensive slip to burst forward and slide past Button to take the plaudits.
Barry Bannan has slotted in seamlessly since his arrival at Hillsborough. The Scottish international has shown bags of quality during his first five appearances for Wednesday. Four of those have come away from Hillsborough and following the most recent away at Brentford, head coach Carlos Carvalhal was full of praise for the former Crystal Palace man. The talented midfielder went from creator to defender at Griffin Park following the dismissal of Jeremy Helan at left back. “Barry Bannan can play
in all the positions,” Carvalhal said. “If you ask him can he play in central defence, he will tell you he can play in central defence! “He is the kind of player that all the coaches like because he is a complete player. .Barry Bannan “He is a very hard worker, with very good quality, he is a player that absolutely understands football and this type of player can play anywhere. “But not just him, the whole team were fantastic on Saturday and the attitude of the players was very good.”
Wednesday: Westwood, Turner, Hutchinson, Matias (Joao 63), Nuhiu (Lopez 81), Lees, Lee, Hunt, Wallace, Pudil (Helan 41 s/o 79), Bannan
