SHEFFIELD - THE UK’S OUTDOOR CITY Sheffield’s outdoor credentials are growing in stature on the global stage. Last week the city hosted the European Outdoor Summit, attracting more than 300 leading outdoor businesses and brands. This latest significant event comes just a month after the International Adventure Tourism Conference was also held here. And to coincide with the spotlight shining on Sheffield, a muchanticipated new website for visitors, tourists, locals and outdoor enthusiasts was been launched at www.theoutdoorcity.co.uk. Written and produced by Sheffield walkers, runners,

climbers, cyclists and mountain bikers -including Sheffield legends such as Steve Peat and Steve McClure – the website captures the very latest goings-onfrom those who love the outdoors for those who love the outdoors. Bursting with trails, routes, guide information, signposts to travel and hospitality information plus recommendations from people in-the-know, The Outdoor City website is for the enjoyment of anyone planning a city break with a twist, indulging a passion for the outdoors or even taking their first steps into the adventure playground on their doorstep.

Already known internationally as the climbing capital of the UK, Sheffield is also home to an impressive community of bikers, walkers and runners. The city’s natural topography has led to the attraction and retention of talented people who want to live, work and play here. The proximity between the urban and rural landscape gives Sheffield its unique identity as The Outdoor City, making it the UKs leading destination for people seeking outdoor adventure, city culture and rural escapes. Leigh Bramall, deputy leader of Sheffield City Council said: “Fourteen out of

Sheffield’s 80 parks are acclaimed as among the very best in the UK – more than any other city in Yorkshire. The stunning Peak District National Park sits within our city boundaries, home to world class climbing routes, walks, runs and bike rides. Sheffield has four indoor climbing walls and the only city centre mountain bike trail in England, while our

newly crowd-funded Lady Canning mountain bike trail has had 2,000 riders rolling 7,000 runs in the first seven weeks. It is undoubtedly the unique people and the places that make Sheffield The Outdoor City and now we have a website that can help other’s enjoy what we all get to experience by living here.” Visit www.theoutdoorcity.co.uk for a thrills and spills ride through Sheffield’s outdoor city scene.

WIN TICKETS TO RICHARD HAWLEY’S BIGGEST EVER HOMETOWN SHOW Following the release of his eighth studio album Hollow Meadows, Richard Hawley will undertake a 13-date tour of the UK and Ireland. This will be his longest UK tour in three years and include his largest ever Sheffield show, when he plays his first hometown gig in over two years at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena on Friday 6th November. Tickets are now on general sale, priced £27.50 when purchased online at www.motorpointarenasheffield. co.uk or through the Arena ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56, or £26.25 when purchased in person from the Arena Box Office. This will be Richard’s first headline show at the Arena and will be performed in the reduced capacity venue The Steel Hall, bringing the audience closer to the event He has previously appeared on the Arena stage with Pulp, Elbow, Paul Weller and REM. The tour will be in support of Hawley’s new album Hollow Meadows, which was released via Parlophone Records on in September. Recorded at Sheffield’s Yellow Arch Studio in spring 2015, Hollow Meadows sees Hawley return to the classic, sophisticated song-

writing and subtle arrangements that made him so widely loved and revered in the first place. Meditating on such themes as ageing, fallibility and relationships, much of the album shares a brooding, yet wistful and romantic atmosphere in keeping with early albums Late Night Final and Lowedges, as well as touches of 2009’s Truelove’s Gutter and Standing At The Sky’s Edge. For the first time ever, Hawley demoed the songs in his shed studio (‘Disgracelands’) with his long-time guitarist and confidant, Shez Sheridan (who also coproduced the album with Hawley and Colin Elliot). This allowed him to enter the studio with fully realised songs, and many of those original demos were so strong, they form part of the finished album, including the vocal to the sublime opening track, ‘I Still Want You’ – Hawley at his most vulnerable and romantic, with one of those choruses that only Hawley seems capable of writing, like a ballroom spotlight on a glitterball. The album features some notable guests from the UK folk scene, Hawley’s neighbour and friend Martin Simpson, and Nancy Kerr. Other guests include one of Hawley’s oldest and dearest friends, Jarvis Cocker, and the Hick Street Chip Shop Singers, who are made up of various Sheffield luminaries, including Slow Club’s Rebecca Taylor. Hollow Meadows is an album full of exceptional songwriting, beautiful melodies and harmonies, and some of the finest lyrics and vocals Hawley has ever written and recorded. It will further cement his reputation as one of Britain’s greatest songwriters of the past 15 years. The album is available on CD, digital download and gatefold double vinyl. The lovely people of Sheffield Arena has knidly given us a pair of tickets to give away to a lucky reader to attend this amazing show. Simply answer the following question and send your answer to either info@ mercurynewspaper.co.uk or 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG before Noon on Monday 26th October.

ALBERT SNODGRASS

I was at a cash machine when an old lady came up to me and asked to check her balance. So I pushed her over. A 75-year old man went to his doctor’s office to get a sperm count. The doctor gave the man a jar and said, “Take this jar home and bring me back a sample tomorrow.” The next day, the 75-year old man reappears at the doctor’s office and gives him the jar, which is as clean and empty as on the previous day. The doctor asks what happened, and the man explains, “Well, first I tried with my right hand, but nothing happened. Then I tried with my left hand, but still nothing. Then I asked my wife for help. She tried with her right hand - nothing. Then with her left, still nothing. She even tried with her mouth, first with the teeth in, then with the teeth out, and still nothing. We even called up the lady next door, and she tried with both hands and her mouth too, but nothing.” The doctor was shocked. “You asked your NEIGHBOUR?” The old man replied, “Yep, but no matter what we tried, we couldn’t get the damned jar open!” As an elderly lady sat on her front porch reflecting on her long life, a Fairy Godmother suddenly appeared and offered to fulfill three wishes for her. “Well,” said the woman, “I guess I’d like to be rich.” POOF: The Fairy Godmother turned her rocking chair into solid gold. “And I wouldn’t mind being a young and beautiful princess.” POOF: The Fairy Godmother turned the old woman into an exquisite young princess, with a priceless crown of jewels. “your third wish?” asked the Fairy Godmother. “Could you possibly turn my wonderful cat into a handsome prince?” POOF: There, in front stood the most handsome young man anyone had ever seen. She stared at him in awe, completely smitten. As he came toward her, her knees weakened. He bent down, brushing his lips across her ear as he whispered, “I bet you’re sorry you had me neutered now.” I was saying to a stranger in the pub last night, “My granddad is 104 tomorrow.” “That’s amazing! What’s his secret?” “He was born a long time ago.”

Some of you may have seen our team members handing out mock-tails and advice at the many events like the Lowedges Festival and Art in the Garden in Sheffield, others may have come along to our newly launched resilience activities within the Langtons Antiques & Collectables and Leaf Allotments, you may have had a visit from us armed with our stress balls or even received some alcohol awareness training within your organisation. If you haven’t had the chance to chat to us yet, our free advice and referral line is up and running so do give us a call any time! How can we support you? Would you like to know how we can support your organisation, your service users or collaborate with you on events & activities within the local community? Drink Wise, Age Well is a multi-agency organisation and we have three different work streams, which offer a range of service and opportunities for coproduction: Prevention and Campaigning • Tailored alcohol awareness workshops for the public and employment organisations; • Interactive community events; • Peer support groups; and • Family and friends support group. Direct Engagement and Support • One-to-one individual tailored advice and support either in the community or in people’s own homes. Resilience • Community based activities to help strengthen people’s ability to deal with stressful life events; and • Six week resilience course – Health and wellbeing, staying active and community engagement. • Volunteer opportunities and befriending project Building resilience through our Young at Heart Project Our Resilience workers have been out and about in local communities across Sheffield over the past few months meeting people and visiting community groups. Their aim is to support existing provision and work alongside local residents to generate new options for activities. Last month the team were excited to launch a new innovative project that is being run in conjunction with the team at

Langton’s Antique and Collectables every Wednesday afternoon. We have our own display cabinet exclusively for our use. As a team of staff and volunteers we will be purchasing antiques and collectables from car-boot sales and auctions, researching the finds, learning how to display them for sale and reinvesting into the project. Our aim is to share skills, learn new ones, create a safe space and have fun as a group with the hope of maintaining a selfsufficient and varied on-going project for the full five years. Our group meets every Wednesday Afternoon from 1pm-5pm inside Langtons Antiqiues & Collectables. Please feel free to stop by for a chat or for more information call our free phone line on 0800 032 3723. Featured Partner Quentin Marris from Drink Wise, Age Well partner organisation Addaction, discusses their role in Drink Wise, Age Well in Sheffield. Tell us more about your organisation? Addaction is the UK’s leading drug and alcohol charity. Every year, we help over 40,000 people in England and Scotland to recover from their problems. With our help, they rebuild relationships and go on to live fulfilling and meaningful lives. We have been at the forefront of treatment in the UK for over 45 years. More than anyone, we understand how difficult it can be to recover from a drug or alcohol problem. We know it’s about more than tackling the problem itself and that each person’s path to recovery is different. Our aim is simple - we will not rest until every person with a drug or alcohol problem has access to support that enables them to change their lives and unlock their full potential. Why did your organisation want to become a partner in Drink Wise, Age Well? We recognised that alcohol consumption amongst the over 50s is on the increase and is a largely hidden activity. When the opportunity came to bid for National Lottery money to address the issue we had no hesitation in putting ourselves forward. We pulled together a consortium of organisations across the UK to contribute to our bid. We were fortunate enough to be chosen as the consortium that would deliver what is now called Drink Wise, Age Well. The aims of the programme fit perfectly with our mission to provide a response to drug and alcohol problems wherever they arise. What is your role as partner and how

will you be supported the project? Nationally, Addaction leads the Drink Wise, Age Well programme. We are responsible for making sure that the programme is delivered effectively in 5 areas across the UK. In Sheffield, we are a partner with Royal Voluntary Service and Sheffield Alcohol Support Service, with each organisation bringing its own expertise. Addaction staff are working directly with individuals whose drinking is at risk of escalating or is starting to get out of control. What are your ambitions for Drink Wise, Age Well (Sheffield) and its impact on Sheffield’s over 50s? I would like to think that in 5 years time, when Drink Wise, Age Well comes to an end, the people of Sheffield will understand more about the particular risks of drinking amongst the over 50s. I anticipate that we will have helped a lot of people to improve their psychological and physical health and to live satisfying lives without using alcohol excessively. I also hope that the work we start will continue with mainstream funding in years to come. Tell us something interesting about yourself that most people don’t know? 30 years ago I was Ward Manager of an NHS Alcohol Treatment Unit and I have worked in the field ever since – I feel that playing a part in developing Drink Wise, Age Well is another step on a long personal journey. Where will you spot us over the next few months in your community? Our Resilience Team will be holding information sessions and community events at the following places: Antiques Group @ Langtons Antiques Emporium Every Wednesday 1pm to 4.30pm Allotment Group @ Leaf Allotment Every Thursday 10am to 1pm

ASKING ALEXANDRIA 02 Academy, 27th October Preview by KT Evans

Love them or hate them, Asking Alexandria have well and truly returned. Since the shock departure of their former outlandish frontman Danny Worsnop, the Northern pack are aimed with a brand new vocalist Denis Stoff and are bolstering up for the release of their fourth studio album in the new year. With a performance in Sheffield’s O2 Academy set for 27th October, we caught up with guitarist and lyricist Ben Bruce to get the gossip on the most anticipated release of the bands career. 1. I want to talk about your upcoming fourth album. Do you have a release date or title for the album yet? We were initially planning to release the record in November but we’ve postponed the release because we really just want to make it perfect. We’ve set ourselves a deadline of January 2016 which gives us all more time. This new album has got to prove to everyone that we really are still here. We feel better than we have for years and we want that to be reflected within the album. 2. You’ve said that the new album will feature influences from Slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold. How different will this record be from previous material? I think our last record went on a bit of a tangent. For this new album, we’ve gone back to more original Asking Alexandria material, but we’ve added a modern twist to it. We’ve reverted back to albums one and two for influence so expect a more traditional vibe within the new record. 3. How has the new vocalist, Dennis impacted on the 4th album? Have you been writing tracks together? Since the band started, I did 90% of the writing for the albums. Denis has got involved since he joined, swapping lyrics and throwing about ideas. He suggests I should try this and that, which is really refreshing! I didn’t know how it would work at first, seeing I used to have a hell of a lot of control, but Denis has some amazing ideas which have been a breath of fresh air. It’s really has worked out very well.

4. How was the writing and recording process? Am I still justified to call you a metalcore band? We still have a few vocal tracks to record, the gang vocals and the choir parts for example. But it’s almost ready now, just a few alterations to be done. In terms of metalcore…I don’t put things into a subgenre. When I’m in a taxi and the driver says ‘God, you’ve got a lot of tattoos, you must be a musician’ and they ask me what music I play, I just say ‘heavy stuff.’ It makes it far less complicated. Maybe I should make something totally obscure up… salsa?! 5. You’ve said the album will feature some huge arena rock songs. Is the dream to do a headline arena tour in the near future? It is certainly a goal of mine which we are trying to work towards. We supported Bullet For My Valentine at Wembley pretty recently, but one day it will be our headline show. Having said that, we would all love to headline a one off show at Manchester MEN. Everyone does Wembley so we just want to do something different. The North doesn’t often get a lot of the big shows, it can get ignored at times, which is why we want to bring an Asking Alexandria show away from London. 6. Your former vocalist Danny Worsnop recently left the band. Are we to expect references to this departure in the new album? There are a few references throughout which are pretty obvious. When I first started penning lyrics, most of it was aimed at him to begin with. But after a while, I just thought why should we bother? So we changed a lot of the lyrics and pretty much re-did the album. We’ve left some in though and they’re pretty mean. You’ll have to listen out for them when the record gets released. 7. How is Asking Alexandria gelling together after Danny’s departure? We are getting along better than we have for years. When Danny was in the band, it drove a massive wedge in between us all. We’re closer than have been for the last four or five years. When we were on the road, I used to tour in a different bus, I just couldn’t stand Danny, I couldn’t stand being around him. But since he left, we all tour together, we don’t have to bother making different arrangements. It’s just so much better. 8. Asking Alexandria are touring the UK throughout October of this year, in particular the Sheffield date at O2 Academy on 27th October. Are you excited about returning home? It’s going to be awesome! The fans are less spoilt in the UK, they don’t get things like Vans Warped tour in massive weekend festivals every month. The energy is absolutely insane when we get to the UK. We’ve never actually performed in Sheffield so we’re really excited about that as well. I’ve heard plenty of good things about the fans in Sheffield and obviously the scene there at the minute is really strong. It’s always great to get over to new places.

Blues fans are in for a treat when Canadian music legend Doc Fingers plays a one-off solo performance at Leopold Square’s Cubana next Monday (October 26). He is renowned for his performances at events such as the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Sydney, Nagano, Atlanta, and Lillehammer; the Kinsale Jazz Festival, the Cannes Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, the Vancouver Jazz Festival, and the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival. MONTHLY JAZZ NIGHTS ON NEW MENU One of South Yorkshire’s most prestigious restaurants is set to strike a chord with lovers of contemporary jazz. The Old Weighing Room Restaurant & Bar in Doncaster has announced a series of monthly jazz nights, with the first one scheduled for Friday November 6 from 6.00pm. Situated in the grounds of Doncaster Racecourse, the venue has already forged a reputation for quality fine dining and recently unveiled its spectacular Winter Menu in advance of the busy festive season. Now the award-winning restaurant is hoping to build on its growing popularity by attracting a new wave of jazz fans inspired by contemporary artists such as The New York Jazz Band, Simply Strings and Jumpin’ – who have all previously performed at the racecourse. Diners can tuck into a varied range of sharing platters, steaks and sharing boards designed for the occasion, with smoked salmon blini, marinated artichokes and sirloin steak among the tastebud-tingling dishes on offer. Guests will also be able to enjoy a sumptuous

array of jazz-themed cocktails, including New Orleans – a gorgeous, easy-drinking fruity French martini with lush pineapple, rich raspberry Chambord and Cîroc grape vodka garnished with fresh raspberries. Other tempting cocktails include Blue Notes, a mojito Martini cocktail with a refreshing hit of mint and lime, and the classic cocktail Louis Armstrong, which is served on ice and garnished with lemon and a cherry, Haig club, sweet vermouth and 2 dashes of original bitters. The jazz-themed nights are the latest initiative at The Old Weighing Room, which was crowned Best Contemporary Restaurant at the recent Eastside Restaurant Awards. Formerly Silks, the venue is based in a stunning building that underwent a £125k refurbishment ahead of its reopening last March. Accommodating up to 70 covers, it caters for parties of two to 40 and is also available for private hire for parties of over 40. ENGLAND AND WALES TAKE ON EACH OTHER IN AID OF LOCAL CHARITY One evening Nathan Flatley and his friend Geraint started a conversation on Facebook about sport in general and this started a little debate. From this debate started banter between friends as lads do and in the end a challenge was issued to play a rugby match with the English taking on the Welsh. Nathan being a very competitive guy could not turn down the chance to win at something! Quite a few people started to show an interest in the match and they then had a chat thinking it would be a brilliant idea to give this game some meaning and decided to have a rugby match for charity that was close to Geraint’s heart. Nathan then took a team to Wales from England to play this match, aiming to raise a minimum of £1000. Both the lads employers got behind the idea and in the end the English lads got a full team together and travelled down to Wales, with the company Dreams sponsoring both Wales and England kits and volunteers helping out on the day. The match was a great success despite England losing 57-7! Afterwards there was some evening entertainment and a raffle to help raise more money and by the end of the day they raised around £3000 for the cancer charity Velindre who are based in Wales.

Due to the success of the match and the whole day they wanted to carry this on and are now organising a re-match but this time the Welsh are coming to Sheffield and the game will be our sport, Football. The charity they have chosen to raise money for is Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in Sheffield which they feel is a great cause and is close to Nathan’s heart this time. The lads don’t know how far campaign will go but they are aiming to continue to put on events like this and raise money for the two brilliant charities along the way.

new at barnsley civic

This time the aim is to at least double the money raised at the event in Wales. The football game will be on Saturday 24th of October with a 3pm kick off at Sheffield Transport Sports Club, Greenhill Main Road, Sheffield S8 7RH. Tickets for the event are £5 per adult & £1 per child. As well as the football there will be a bouncy castle on the day at the club followed be an evening event with fundraising raffle and a DJ plus a range of fundraising games for all the family. To lend your support to this amazing campaign you can donate via www.justgiving.com/BAYVCharityFootball

Stuart Maconie brings his latest show The People’s Songs to The Civic next month. The Story of Modern Britain in 50 Records are the songs that we have listened to, laughed to, loved to and laboured to, as well as downed tools and danced to. Covering the last seven decades, Stuart Maconie looks at the songs that have sound tracked our changing times, and - just sometimes - changed the way we feel. The story of modern Britain is told through the records that we listened to and loved during the dramatic and kaleidoscopic period from the Second World War to the present day. This is not a rock critique about the 50 greatest tracks ever recorded. Rather, it is a celebration of songs that tell us something about how we have felt about things in our lives down the eras - work, war, class, leisure, race, family, drugs, sex, patriotism and more. Following his sell-out Edinburgh 2014 run Talk Sport host Matt Forde, now widely acknowledged as the country’s leading political comedian returns with a brand new show tackling some of the many great questions facing our country in the aftermath of the election…. Will we have a second referendum? Will David Cameron serve a full term? Will Jeremy Corbyn still be Labour leader by the time this gig happens? And if you want to experience a unique night of poetry with a twist, then join A Firm of Poets at The Civic at the end of November, with The People’s Republic of Poetry. Stuart Maconie - Saturday 21 November Matt Forde - Friday 27 November People’s Republic - Sat 28 November

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I always look forward to a visit to the Tackle and Guns trade show held at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire, and last weekend was show time! It’s a chance for me to catch up with people I may not have seen for a while, or put names to faces, and see what the latest offerings will be when they finally hit the shelves. My first stop had to be the hugely impressive Sonik Sports stand, where I caught up with Ian McCormack, Commercial Director at the brand. I arrived within fifteen minutes of the doors opening, and the Sonik stand was already busy with retailers wanting to see the new products coming this year. There was plenty to see; with one hundred and twenty new additions to the catalogue forecast during the new season, the interest was understandable, and I was pleased to check out the new ranges coming your way soon. You have much to look forward to…. I was introduced to the wider Sonik team too; I met the lovely lady (Tracy) I usually speak to on the phone, Martin Ford, head consultant, along with Nick Burrage, and the boss, Tim Murphy, amongst others, so that was a good start! It’s always nice to bump into Angler’s Mail columnist Steve Collett, whom I first met some time ago, and recently watched him storm to British Lure Angling Championship success during the inaugural final. He did it again this year, and as he was busy with customers, a quick pat on the back and handshake was enough to touch base and offer congratulations; sometimes it’s that busy, that’s all there is time for! It was great to see past clients at the show too; the Pallatrax and Marukyu teams both doing a roaring trade with innovative new products, and again, a few minutes chat was enough to catch up on the latest gossip and product news with faces I haven’t seen for a while. I visited the Taska Angling stand which was immediately next door to Kryston products, and I finally caught up with Dave Chiltern, long-time owner of the brand who showed me something I hadn’t seen before; pva gel! You may already be aware of it, or even have used it in the past, but I certainly hadn’t, and was treated to a demonstration as Dave showed me how his ‘Anti-Tangle Gel’ could be used to stiffen a braid or multi-strand hooklink to give perfect presentation every time. As it is a pva derivative, once in the water, it dissolves, and the braid regains its usual supple qualities; excellent! Despite being a supported angler, there are odd other products I can make use of, and this looks like one of them. One of the things I love most about the show is the fabulous lure tank supplied by the guys at Mainstream Fisheries. Dave Smith and his gang really put on a show with a huge tank

filled with healthy looking pike (and odd perch) which glare balefully from behind the glass as you wander by. The lure manufacturers give demonstrations, (which most of the time the pike amusingly ignore) showing the varied actions of their top products. It’s a chance to take the weight off my feet for a while, so I always stop by; where else can you see so many big pike up close? The show is an ideal place to network new contacts, and I’m very pleased to have been asked to assist Radical Angling Developments (www.radicalangling.co.uk) with their social media strategy. Radical by name, radical by nature, the company produce high end carbon bankware for the discerning angler. I’ve previously written an article about them for Tackle and Guns magazine, but it was the first time I’d met them in person. They manufacture in the UK, using best quality 3K woven twill carbon and other components, so you know that the end result will be of utmost standard with back up and excellent customer service on your doorstep, not thousands of miles away! A fine bunch indeed, offering a top notch product, and their stand was busy all day….and justifiably so! Make sure you check them out…. By the end of the day, my feet were swollen and sore, my throat parched by endless chatter, but as always, it was a superb event, well attended, and with plenty of orders being taken. As anglers and customers, we have lots to look forward to next season, there are some remarkable products coming to the shelves, and I can’t wait to use them. Now, what date is the show next year…..

LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

The week began with the last of the S&HCFA Senior Cup games, and ended on the weekend with a return to league competition for the teams in the County Senior League. S&HCFA Senior Cup 2nd Round It was an excellent midweek for County Senior teams in the S&HCFA Senior cup, with two teams making it through to the next round this week Firstly, Frecheville pulled off a very impressive 1-0 win over Brodsworth Welfare. North Gawber Colliery also booked their place in Round three, with a 1-0 win, as they beat Penistone Church at the Memorial Ground. On top of this, both Houghton Main and Swallownest FC made it into the next round after victories last weekend. Jubilee Sports were beaten 5-1 away against Maltby Main. Wickersley were also defeated, losing 4-0 against Parkgate FC. On Tuesday, last years’ Premier Division winners were unlucky to go down to 3-2 away against Worsbrough Bridge Athletic. Millmoor Juniors were also beaten, as they lost 4-0 against Frickley Athletic. Premier Division Houghton Main made it four straight league win, as they beat North Gawber Colliery 1-0 at Woolley MW. Orrin McIntyre scored the only goal, as Houghton Main stretched their lead at the top of the league to three points and recorded their third clean-sheet in four games in the process. Second placed Swallownest FC were beaten 2-1 at home by Handsworth Parramore Reserves. Handsworth have claimed 14 points from the last 18 available, and climb into fifth position. Millmoor Juniors and Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves played out a nine goal thriller at Grange Park. Stocksbridge took the three points with a 5-4 win, despite having 10 men for 30 minutes after having their goalkeeper sent-off.

Goals from Mark Clare and Joe Dungworth gave Swinton Athletic a 2-0 home win over Wickersley FC. There were two big games at the bottom with AFC Penistone Church taking on Jubilee Sports at the Memorial Ground. The game ended 1-1, leaving Jubilee third bottom and Penistone second bottom. Also Thorpe Hesley hosted Oughtibridge WMFC at the Rockingham Community Centre. Thorpe Hesley claimed the points with a 3-2 win, and climbing off the foot-of-the-table and above Oughtibridge. Division One Wombwell Main are going from strength-to-strength, this week extending their 100% start to five games, with a 3-2 win over Davy FC. Wombwell’s goals came from Daryl Smith, Ryan Bent and Ryan Hollsworth and move them into fourth place despite playing fewer games then all of their rivals. A double from Anthony Ellor gave Denaby United a 2-1 win over Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 at Chaucer School. Denaby lead the way by one point from Silkstone United, who beat AFC Dronfield 5-2, helped by a hat-trick from Wayne Hughes. Caribbean Sports bounced back from back-to-back defeats in the league and cup, by beating Kingstone United 5-0 at the Caribbean Sports Club. Denaby Main maintained their unbeaten start, as they beat High Green Villa 2-0 at Tickhill Square. Elsewhere, Sheffield bankers and Millmoor Juniors Reserves schared the points, after an entertaining 3-3 draw at Hillsborough College.

Division Two Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves moved into second place, after a single goal from Steve Brown gave them a 1-0 away victory over Kiveton Park. Goals from William Hilbert (2), Joe Slater, Luke Beadham and Dylan Parrott gave Treeton Terriers a 5-0 win over Bawtry Town. Mid-table Houghton Main Reserves booked their fourth win of the season, with a 2-1 home win over Sheffield Lane Top. Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves and North Gawber Colliery Reserves played-out a very rare goalless draw at Park Road. U21 Division Athersley Recreation U21 started their league win campaign with an hard-fought 2-1 away win over Wombwell Main U21. U21 Division Cup Caribbean Sports U21 made it three wins from win in Group A, with a 3-1 home win against Millmoor Juniors U21. In Group B, Stocksbridge Park Steels U21 were 10-0 winners against Davy FC U21.

ROVERS FIRE BLANKS AS FERGIE WATCHES New manager Darren Ferguson watched from the stands as Rob Jones took charge of his final game as interim first team manager. There was barely a minute played at the Keepmoat with people still taking their seats when Bradford took the lead, not the start Rovers would have liked. A long throw was flicked on to Devante Cole who was able to knock the ball home from just three yards. Bradford continued to pressure in the early minutes and were on top at the Keepmoat Stadium. They almost got a second when a header was flicked on towards Reece Burke at the

back post, fortunately for the Rovers fans he missed his kick from six yards. Rovers had their first chance of the game when Richie Wellens played a disguised ball through the middle for James Coppinger. With Williams in acres of space to his right the Rovers captain couldn’t pick out the right pass and the chance went begging. Gary MacKenzie made two vital interceptions in the box to keep it at 1-0 to the visitors. The first denied Steven Davies in the six yard box and the second denied goalscorer Cole from eight yards. Rob Jones was forced into an early substitution when Andy Butler took a

JONES DISAPPOINTED WITH SIGN-OFF Rob Jones said that he was “disappointed for the football club” in the way that the curtain came down on his interim period in charge of the football club. The 35 year old watched on as Rovers were defeated at home to Bradford City but he gave his unequivocal backing to new manager Darren Ferguson. “It’s time for a new era, an exciting and massive era. He plays good, attractive football and everyone is fully behind him. This is the longest tenure I’ve been at a club. I love it here and want it to do well. I’m 100% behind Darren and Gavin, whatever they need me to do, I’ll do it. Darren will know what he wants to do and what he sees necessary. He basically said what he expects, it wasn’t a long chat. He starts work first thing in the morning.” The hard work starts in earnest for Ferguson – most recently of Peterborough United – when 23rd placed Rovers travel to Shrewsbury. “We can’t keep giving

people goals,” bemoaned Jones. “We had 89 minutes to get back in to it and had lots of possession, and possession in their half, but the final ball wasn’t good enough – to have two shots on target at home isn’t good enough. Its always a shock when you start so slowly. It’s a group that grows in games at this moment in time. We’ve shown that in the last three home games, we’ve started slowly and then got going. Andy Butler came off because he had a bit of blurred vision and couldn’t shake it off. We’ve spoken to the doctor and he should be fine. Copps (James Coppinger) had a knock to his calf but he’s shaken it off and should be okay for Tuesday night, as everyone else will be. It’s the aim for me to get as many U21s in to the first team group as possible and get back on the pitch. I have done quite a lot and have been working so could play – if requested – on Tuesday. I hope to be involved in the whole group but that’s the manager’s decision.”

REDFEARN FINDS POSITIVES IN LOSS

Rotherham United manager Neil Redfearn was encouraged by his side’s first performance under his reign despite falling to a 2-1 defeat against Brentford in the capital. Alan Judge’s second minute wonderstrike was matched by an equally impressive thunderbolt from Joe Mattock in the second half, but the Bees’ midfielder struck again following the equaliser to ensure Lee Carsley’s men recorded three points at Griffin Park. A battling Millers’ performance went unrewarded in the end despite late efforts from Paul Green and Matt Derbyshire but Redfearn was pleased with his maiden outing in Rotherham colours. “I thought there was a lot of effort and endeavour and Brentford know they’ve been in a game,” he explained. “If I’m honest I thought we deserved a point at least and when it went to 1-1 we could have got all three.” The former Leeds United boss is keen to make his mark on his newly inherited squad and believes their showing in London has given them a platform to build on. “It’s trying to get this side into a position where it feels confident with what they’re about and it’s going to take time because it’s a process,” Redfearn admitted. “We’re where we are because of what we’ve been doing so we’ve got to find a way to get ourselves out of it. It’s finding the right personnel in the right shape and system to go on and get results. I think we’ve got to take a lot of heart from the

performance but the lads are a bit down in there. They set themselves up to go and get a result and for me the performance was encouraging. We’ve got some drive but we’ve got to find a way of playing that suits us. I think it was a game where there were quite a few chances. I thought we were right in a game that was highly competitive and it was an entertaining game. There was some good stuff played and we’ve got to build on this.” Danny Ward was set to start at Griffin Park but was withdrawn following an injury sustained in the warm up, while Mattock was substituted after taking a knock in the action. “His [Danny Ward] back spasmed up in the warm up which is a bit of a concern. It got to the point where he was struggling to walk. Then obviously Joe Mattock went over on his shoulder. He said he felt it pop a bit which is a worry because he’s an important player for us. If you’re going to compete and you’re going to get stuck in then you’re going to get knocks.”

knock to the head, Aaron Taylor-Sinclair replaced him. There was controversy on 25 minutes as the home side appeared to have scored from a corner before the referee stopped play. The initial header hit the crossbar before bouncing down on the goal line before Keshi Anderson knocked home the rebound. Thinking he’d scored the referee disallowed the goal and booked Anderson for handball. Just before half time Stuckmann was called into action as Kyel Reid fired a stinging shot at goal from distance but the Rovers keeper made a great save at full stretch. Despite Rovers starting the second half

the better side, Cole continued to cause problems for the home side. On the break he was on the verge of releasing a shot on goal before a perfectly timed sliding tackle from Wellens dispossessed him. Tony McMahon was inches away from doubling the visitors lead as his free kick from 25 yards curled past the post. Richard Chaplow went close for the home side when he got on the end of a first time ball in from Taylor-Sinclair, quickly sorting his feet he got his shot away but it was well blocked by the Bradford defender. Andy Williams forced Ben Williams into a good reaction save as

he hit one from inside the area. Substitute Nathan Tyson got on the rebound with an overhead kick but bradford eventually cleared. Rovers continued to pressure, Tyson went agonisingly close as his shot was dragged an inch wide of the post on the angle. MacKenzie also headed just over the bar from a corner in the 90th minute before Oscar Gobern struck a shot from 25 yards that was just wide. After three minutes added time the referee blew for full time and it was Bradford who took the points home.

Joe Mattock’s second-half screamer proved in vain as Rotherham United slipped to a narrow defeat at the hands of Brentford in Neil Redfearn’s first game in charge of the Millers. Redfearn’s reign got off to the worst possible start as Danny Ward withdrew following an injury in the warm-up before Alan Judge netted in just the second minute of the clash but the Millers responded superbly to the early setbacks as they had the better of the proceedings either side of the interval as Mattock levelled matters with a superb longrange strike. However, the Millers’ joy proved shortlived as Judge put the West Londoners back in charge and despite a spirited display from the visitors, they were unable to claim a share of the spoils. Following the international break, the Millers made three changes to their starting line-up as Republic of Ireland international Paul Green returned to the visitors engine room following injury at the expense of Grant Ward, who had to settle for a substitutes berth.Chris Maguire was handed an opportunity to impress as Joe Newell was unavailable because of injury while Ward was initially recalled to first-team action but the exHuddersfield striker suffered an injury in the warm-up and he was replaced by Aidy White in the starting line-up while Greg Halford was promoted to the substitutes bench after initially being omitted from the squad. The home side fielded three former Millers loanees in their squad as John Swift was handed his first start for the ‘Bees while Toumani Diagouraga and Jack O’Connell were named amongst the substitutes. Lee Carsley’s men were quick out of the blocks and they stunned the Millers’ travelling contingent when they broke the deadlock with their first foray of note in just the second minute when fine interplay saw Nico Yennaris skip to the byline to fire a tantalising cross which was only half-cleared by Farrend Rawson into the path of Judge, who kept his nerve to fire a controlled dipping volley from just outside the box which was inch-perfect to beat the desperate dive of Lee Camp and arch just beneath the visitors’ crossbar. The Millers responded positively to the early setback and Maguire’s inswinging free kick saw Matt Derbyshire rise highest to glance a looping header which had David Button backtracking nervously as he tipped the ball over the bar before skipper Danny Collins headed wide from the resultant corner. Moments later, the home fans

had their hearts in their mouths when a threaded ball found Maguire with his back to goal but he cleverly worked a shooting position to fire a rasping drive from distance which whistled narrowly wide of the upright. Just past the quarter hour, Jonson Clarke-Harris’ sweeping pass saw White jink past the attentions of Yennaris to advance into the box but his effort with his weaker right foot was straight down the throat of Button before Jake Bidwell’s underhit backpass almost saw Derbyshire sneak in but Button hacked the ball clear just in the nick of time. In a rare foray by the home side, Alan McCormack’s mazy run and pass had the Millers’ rearguard on the backfoot and Marco Djuricin worked a yard of space but he fluffed his lines with he scooped his effort well wide of the target before the home side were thankful for Harlee Dean for a timely clearance after Derbyshire had sneaked behind the home defence to plant an inviting centre across the face of goal. Just past the half hour mark, the home side almost doubled their lead when Swift gave a glimpse of his emerging talent when his jinking run left a trail of Millers defenders in his wake before he pulled the ball back to Djuricin, who looked a certain scorer from just yards out, but his goalbound effort was seemingly blocked en-route to goal by Camp as the ball fizzed past the upright. With the words of new boss Redfearn ringing in their ears, the Millers made a lightning start to the second half and they levelled matters just 57 seconds in when Mattock pounced on a loose ball and after striding with purpose towards the home goal, he unleashed a rasping left-footed effort from distance which gathered pace as it arrowed past the outstretched hand of Button to nestle in the top corner of the goal. Minutes later,

Richie Smallwood became the first to see yellow as he upended Canos in full flight as he had previously got the better of Mattock in a tussle for possession and the home side almost made the visitors pay from the resultant free-kick when Swift almost latched onto Judge’s centre before being crowded out. Just before the hour mark, Brentford regained their lead when Maguire conceded a free-kick deep in the home half and a long punt upfield was not cleared decisively by the Millers backline and Jake Bidwell pulled a tantalising cross back into the danger area and Judge, who had ghosted away from his marker, steered a powerful header into the roof of the visitors net. The Millers responded bravely to the goal and Derbyshire had a glimpse of the target when he struck a low effort which Button just managed to smother to safety as the ball squirmed tantalisingly wide of the goal before the home ‘keeper was again called into action when Maguire’s free-kick was inch-perfect for the run of Green, who powered a header which brought the best of the ex-Tottenham stopper, who parried the ball to safety following a full-length dive. Minutes later, McCormack became the next to see yellow for a clumsy tackle on Maguire by the touchline before the Bees only half-cleared Lewis Buxton’s clipped cross which paved the way for Smallwood to smash a long-range effort which whistled narrowly over the home bar. With time running out for the visitors, the Millers were indebted to Camp for keeping them in the game as he denied Judge a hat-trick with a smart save low to his left before Diagouraga was fortunate to escape with a yellow card for a late tackle on sub Emmanuel Ledesma.

BLADES NEWS2015/16 BLADES POINT NOT GOOD ENOUGH United picked up another point on the road but will be disappointing not to have won Saturday’s encounter at Oldham. On the day that former Blades manager Howard Kendall passed away, 2,111 Blades fans made the trip over the Pennines. McGahey made his first league start of the season and Kieran Wallace was also included as manager Adkins made two changes. McEveley missed out through injury and Coutts dropped to the bench. Chris Basham captains the side. Apart from Basham driving at the Oldham back line, which saw Freeman drill the ball across goal, in the initial ten minutes the home fans were more enthused. Poleon sliced a volley wide after United failed to clear a freekick, then Winchester’s

shot was deflected over, paving the way for the opening goal. From the resulting Jones corner into a crowded six-yard box, the ball was flicked to the back post where PHILLISKIRK directed his header home. The response from United was a spell of pressure without testing home goalkeeper Cornell, whilst for Oldham, Winchester’s shot on the turn, after a good team move, was wide. On the half hour, though, United were back in the game and Scougall was the architect. He won possession and jinked through a line of defenders before laying off for DONE, first time, to clip a curler beyond Cornell’s left and into the corner of the net. Sharp hit a post soon after but an assistant referee’s flag had been raised, whilst

closer to the break, the home side got back on top. From Winchester’s cross, Poleon’s back post header was pushed away by Howard and the Blades goalkeeper denied the same striker on 44 minutes, following a shot on the turn. Early in the second period the Blades were the more dominant force. Adams shot wide from a Wallace cross and then from a corner, Sharp, Basham and Collins were all involved before goalkeeper Cornell smothered on his line. Before the hour mark, Adams went over in the box but there was no penalty forthcoming, Basham headed across goal from Baxter’s free-kick and Adams played Done through, beating the offside trap, but with his unfavoured right foot the goalscorer shot across goal and wide. The entertainment continued, Baxter’s break from midfield saw him shoot just over and then Burn, on a booking and after a number of fouls, was

shown a second yellow card for dragging back Sharp. A number of substitutions were made and United continued to force Oldham back. Two chances in the space of three minutes would have left wondering Adkins how his side were not in front. The first was from Wallace’s low cross, but Sharp, inside the six yard box, sidefooted wide. Sharp then turned provider, pulling back for Scougall, but the Scotsman’s effort came back off a post. As the final ten minutes approached United were still looking for a winner and Campbell-Ryce was introduced. Oldham, however, with ten men, were happy just not to lose the encounter and slowed down the action at every opportunity. Three minutes of injurytime was announced and Adams stung the palms of Cornell, whilst a Campbell-Ryce cross caused problems but Oldham clung on to share the spoils.

BOSS FRUSTRATED Nigel Adkins admitted his was very frustrated with Saturday’s stalemate at Oldham Athletic. Matt Done cancelled out Danny Philliskirk’s early opener for the Latics on the half hour and in the second-half the visitors missed two gilt edgde chances to take all three points.Reflecting on a point in Lancashire, the Gaffer commented: “We should have won the game and we haven’t. We gave away a poor goal, through an individual mistake and in the first-half we didn’t win enough of the oneon-one battles across the pitch. But in the secondhalf we created enough chances to win the game and both Billy (Sharp) and Stefan Scougall should be scoring with their efforts. They had a man sent off when the game was just opening up a bit, but whether they say deeper or not we need to be winning

these types of games.” Adkins continued: “We are really disappointed not to take the points, but full credit to Oldham who worked tremendously hard. You have to mark your man from a set-pieces, it’s a simple job, we have been drumming into the players all week about the importance of keeping clean sheets. We have missed a chance to start a big week with a win, we have got a run of fixtures coming up where we could pick up a lot points quickly and we should have been talking about three here.”

R.I.P HOWARD The Blades are saddened to learn of the news that former manager Howard Kendall passed away on Saturday morning, aged 69. He is probably best known for his time at Everton, where he was a player and managed the Toffees on three occasions. At Bramall Lane, he took over in December 1995 and stayed until June 1997,

leading the Club to the First Division play-off final in 1997. All at Sheffield United offer sincere condolences to Howard’s family and friends at this sad time.

OWLS NEWS2015/16 ALL SQUARE AT THE END BOSS ACCEPTS DRAW FAIR Wednesday and Hull shared the points at Hillsborough as the visitors came from behind to deny the Owls a fifth successive win. The hosts drew first blood through Fernando Forestieri but Abel Hernandez levelled to ensure the spoils were shared. Overall, a point was about the right result as Wednesday bossed much of the first half, while the same could be said for Hull in the second. With a potential top-six slot on the horizon from the early kick-off, there was every incentive for the Owls to extend their recent run

of good form. And they began on the front foot as the Tigers survived a penalty scare inside ten minutes when Michael Dawson tangled with Kieran Lee. The referee waived the appeals away but the Owls were unruffled and Forestieri had a fierce drive blocked by Curtis Davies at the key moment. Hull hit back with Moses Odubajo breaking down the left to feed the onrushing Hernandez, who was denied by a perfectly time challenge from Michael Turner. But Wednesday looked favourites to score first, which they duly did on 28 minutes.

Tom Lees flicked on a Ross Wallace cross and Forestieri was on hand to swivel and drill past Allan McGregor. The Owls stayed in the driving seat for the rest of the first half and Barry Bannan had a chance to double the lead just before the whistle but blasted narrowly over the bar on the angle. Hull emerged for the second period with the bit between their teeth and made the breakthrough on 51 minutes. A goalmouth scramble that took in three quickfire strikes ended with Hernandez applying the most important touch as the

South American hit hard and low past Keiren Westwood. It was hard on Wednesday, who regrouped and got back on an even keel but struggled to make any real impact in the final third. Hull asked more of the questions and Sam Clucas went close with a sighter from distance but the decider almost went the way of the home side. Bannan’s free kick was aimed into the heart of the danger zone, substitute Andrew Robinson connected just too well and his blushes were spared by a fine reaction save from McGregor.

FANCY A TITAN FLUTTER? The Owls are delighted to announce a brand new commercial partnership with Titanbet.co.uk, who will become the club’s official West Stand sponsor for the current campaign. Titanbet.co.uk will offer a range of top price, enhanced bets every week, top quality in-play live betting, excellent customer service and unique sports betting promotions. As part

of the new agreement, Titanbet.co.uk will also supply a range of sports betting promotions, including generous free bet rewards, cashback specials, unique refunds and a wonderful welcome package. Russell Yershon, UK Sports Book Manager for Titanbet.co.uk, said: “We are delighted to partner with Sheffield Wednesday, a club with great heritage, tradition and a Premier League

fan base. We look forward to engaging with and giving Wednesday fans top prices and exclusive football offers. In addition, we will be offering the chance to win money can’t buy prizes. On the pitch, the brand of football under Carlos Carvalhal is exciting and with four wins on the bounce, we’re ready to enjoy the rest of this season as sponsors of the West Stand at Hillsborough.”

A point was the right result said head coach Carlos Carvalhal after the Owls’ 1-1 draw with Hull City. Wednesday went into half time 1-0 after a goal from Fernando Forestieri but the Tigers pulled back an equaliser early into the second half through Abel Hernandez. Carvalhal said: “I feel we deserved to take the lead as we were the better team in the first half. “In the second half Hull played better and overall a draw was a fair score, and I am happy with the point as they are one of the best teams in the division. If we play this well against this

team then we can play the same against anyone and get good results and talk about the points after the game.” The Owls will face QPR on Tuesday night and Rotherham on Friday in the Championship but Carvalhal has no issue with the busy schedule ahead. He added: “If the other teams are playing the same amount of games as us then that is fantastic. When I managed Besiktas I was unhappy with the schedule as we played more games in a shorter time to other teams, but here it is well organised and fair for every team.”

Sheffield Wednesday Chief Operating Officer Paul Bell added: “We are delighted to welcome one of the most exciting brands from the online gaming sector, Titanbet.co.uk, into our Commercial Partners Programme. This is the first time that Titanbet. co.uk have entered into a football club partnership and we are proud they have chosen Sheffield Wednesday.” Titanbet. co.uk will receive a comprehensive package of marketing rights at Hillsborough, including comprehensive branding of the West Stand, TV arc perimeter boards plus advertising in the official matchday programme, on the giant screen and around the concourses via the club’s new stadium television system.
