LORD MAYOR LAUNCHES 2015 POPPY APPEAL The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal was officially launched in Sheffield on Saturday, 24 October when the Lord Mayor, Councillor Talib Hussain, bought a poppy on the Town Hall steps. The appeal, originally started to help those returning from the First World War, recognises the memory of the fallen and the future of the living. Councillor Hussain said: “The poppy is a powerful symbol and I will be wearing mine to remember not just those who have lost their lives in all conflicts, but also to show support for those still serving in the Armed Forces today.” Today, money raised
through the Poppy Appeal goes directly to the Royal British Legion’s welfare work, which supports those serving in the British Armed Forces, those who have previously served, and their families. Christine Spencer of South and West Yorkshire Royal British Legion, said: “The Legion is very grateful to the general public for all their support. The need for our welfare work helping serving, ex-service personnel and their dependents continues to grow.”Poppies will be on sale at locations throughout Sheffield until Wednesday, 11 November. Your donations to the Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal helps to deliver
a wide range of services to our Armed Forces community, including career advice, living with disability, coping with bereavement, financial awareness and practical support. Every poppy plays a part in providing that support. For 2015 Poppy Appeal, the Royal British Legion wanted to re-establish the connection between the poppy and the work of the Legion to make the public aware of who they help and what the money raised is spent on. When it was originally adopted by the Legion in 1921, the poppy was actually a symbol of hope because it helped to raise vital funds to support the Service men returning
from the First World War. The Legion want to re-establish the poppy as a symbol of hope for the future by telling the story behind the poppy, and how it honours the memory of the fallen along with supporting a better the future for the living. This year’s Poppy Appeal features a stunning advertising campaign that contrasts original portraits of WW1 soldiers
OVER 30 GREAT STORES
against photos of modernday British Service personnel and veterans to explain how the Poppy Appeal is not just about remembering the fallen, but also supporting today’s serving and ex-Service men and women. please remember to make a generous donation for your poppy and to wear it with pride - to the memory of the fallen and the future of the living.

ALBERT SNODGRASS
A priest and a pastor are standing by the side of a road holding up a sign that reads “The end is near! Turn around now before it’s too late!” A passing driver yells, “You guys are nuts!” and speeds past them. From around the bend, they hear screeching tyres—then a big splash. The priest turns to the pastor and says, “Do you think we should just put up a sign that says ‘Bridge Collapsed’ instead?” A priest, a minister, and a rabbi want to see who’s best at his job. So they each go into the woods, find a bear, and attempt to convert it. Later they get together. The priest begins: “When I found the bear, I read to him from the Catechism and sprinkled him with holy water. Next week is his First Communion.” “I found a bear by the stream,” says the minister, “and preached God’s holy word. The bear was so mesmerized that he let me baptize him.” They both look down at the rabbi, who is lying on hospital trolley in a body cast. “Looking back,” he says, “maybe I shouldn’t have started with the circumcision.” A burglar breaks into a house. He starts shining his light around looking for valuables. Some nice things catch his eye, and as he reaches for them, he hears, “Jesus is watching you.” Startled, the burglar looks for the speaker. Seeing no-one he keeps loading his swag and again hears “Jesus is watching you.” This time he sees a parrot. “Who are you?” the burglar asks. “Moses” replies the parrot. “Who would call a parrot Moses?” laughed the man. I don’t know” said Moses. “Perhaps the same people who call their Rottweiler Jesus!” How does Moses make tea? He brews. Did you hear about the dyslexic Devil Worshipper? He sold his soul to Santa

to Sheffield yet again on Bonfire Night and as always he’s guaranteed to light up the night in his own inimitable style! Meanwhile Dave and Wally Downes are to set the record straight about the glory days at Wimbledon after agreeing to write a book about the club’s incredible rise through the Football League. Bassett claimed that the Crazy Gang had been misrepresented in a 90 minute BT Sport documentary - which won an award at the Sports Journalists’ Association dinner on Monday - screened late last year. Bassett, who was manager of the Dons between 1981 and 1987 and his former player Downes are working in collaboration on the new book. They started work on the project on Wednesday and the book is expected to be released towards the end of the year. Bassett, who won four promotions with the Dons and took them into the old First Division, is wounded by the portrayal of the Crazy Gang as a team of thugs who would go to any lengths to beat the opposition. On Monday night, the documentary maker’s acceptance speech included a reference to Bassett’s trenchant views on the content of the film. In the documentary Vinnie Jones claimed he was the leader of the dressing room

MEETINGS GET YOUR FREE FLU JABS NOW MONTHLY Monthly Members Meeting If you over 65, pregnant, or have an existing health condition then you are eligible for a free flu vaccination, so don’t delay, get yours today! The flu vaccine is offered free of charge to people in these groups as they can be at risk of developing serious complications if they get flu. Dr Zak McMurray, Medical Director for NHS Sheffield CCG and Sheffield GP, said: “For most healthy people flu remains an unpleasant but mild illness causing sore throat, headache, fever, dry cough and aching muscles but generally they will recover in a few days after getting lots of rest, drinking plenty of fluids and using over-the-counter remedies such as Paracetamol. However, if you have a long term health condition, such as heart and kidney disease, asthma or diabetes, even if it is well managed, or if you are pregnant, or over 65, you are at greater risk of severe complications if
you catch flu. The flu vaccination is one of the most effective ways to reduce harm from flu, so if you’re eligible for the free vaccination, get it now; it’s free because you need it.” Flu occurs every year, usually in the winter, and over time protection from the injected flu vaccine gradually decreases and flu strains often change. This is why new flu vaccines are produced each year and people are strongly advised to have the flu jab every year. People eligible for the free flu vaccine should be contacted by their GP to arrange their vaccination. For more information on health services, the flu vaccination and self-care advice visit the NHS Choices website www.nhs.uk.

Preview: While She Sleeps, 29/12/15, Leadmill By Kt Evans
Legacy, The Divide and No Sides No Enemies.
Without a doubt one of the leading cities within British homegrown music, the steel cities While She Sleeps personify all that is relevant and exciting about these seven hills. From seizing main stages at some of the UKs biggest summer music festivals to capturing the intimacy of a 200 cap venue, the Sheffield five piece have recently announced a one off performance at the mighty Leadmill on 29th December. While She Sleeps are unquestionably one of the front runners within the famous Sheffield music scene. Alongside the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Bring Me The Horizon, Toddla T and a heap load more, the local quintet are flying the flag for gritty metal core. Their first record, This Is The Six smashed its way onto the top ten UK album charts in 2012 and safeguarded the group as the most prosperous pack of musicians to stem from the north at that time. With tracks to include Seven Hills, Our Courage Our Cancer and title track This Is The Six, what was so important about this record was its burning connection to their hometown. Forget the glitz and glamour of rock star parties, tour buses and touring city to city across the world, the band instead chose to represent a grass roots feeling within their material. But most importantly, the band had their fans. Way more than simply a collection of supporters who admire their music, WSS had a fan base with dedication and a true commitment intertwined within their DNA. Their merch became more of a nationally recognised brand which could be spotted in all UK cities than simply a sign of respect to a group, not to mention hearing While She Sleeps blaring out in pretty much any gritty night club across the UK. 2015 witnessed the release of the groups second album, Brainwashed. Having taken a while between releasing new material, lead vocalist Loz Taylor underwent extensive throat surgery to retain his then buggered vocal chords. Fans were kept on their toes for a brief period -it was touch and go if the group may ever be able to perform again, however 1 year one and While She Sleeps were certified as being back on top form. This release was yet again
their former release, This Is The Six. Stand-

This record also was the perfect follow up to ing its group as being the bands most mature record to date, Brainwashed allowed for more deep rooted metal core to be developed, along with the emergence of heavy metal, rock and hardcore elements. So we’ve all heard the curse of the second album...totally not true for Brainwashed. So we have some pretty exciting news to spill the beans on now...While She Sleeps are returning to perform a one off show at our very own Leadmill! If you have yet to see the group take to a live stage before, we strongly suggest you get yourself a ticket to the most anticipated show of 2015. In terms of purchasing, tickets go on sale on Friday 30th October through the Leadmill website www.theleadmill.com. They are released at 10am that morning and are expected to sell out pretty quickly. So to avoid disappointment and bag yourself a pass to the show of the winter, make sure you get up bright and early in preparation. If you are new to Sheffield or have yet to visit the enigma that is the Leadmill, the famous venue makes up a collection of the cities most important live music venues. With the likes of Coldplay, Pulp and Arctic Monkeys all making up part of the venues performing history, Leadmill also hosts weekly club nights, acoustic performances and live shows. The best way to submerge yourself into the epicentre of Sheffields music community, Checkout the website www.leadmill.com for all the info.

NOVEMBER AT THE CIVIC, BARNSLEY With a sweet and sickly start to November one of George Bernard Shaw’s most famous comedies, the play of which the musical ‘My Fair Lady’ is based, and much loved classic tale; Pygmalion by London Contemporary Theatre is coming to Barnsley. When Henry Higgins (a phonetics expert) bets his friend that he can make a lady out of a common flower girl Eliza Doolittle, he gets more than he bargains for. Pygmalion explores attitudes to social class, relationships and human behaviour that are as relevant today as when the play was written. Set in the swinging sixties and using well-known music from that decade, this is Pygmalion as you have never seen it before.

HOW TO JUMP START A CAR! A flat car battery is something most motorists will experience at some point - nothing happening when you turn the key is a nightmare that’s more common in the winter months when cold weather places extra demands on your car battery. Thankfully, it’s not too difficult for anyone to jump-start a car and get it going again. Then you can drive to where you need to go, letting the alternator recharge the battery again. We’ve put together a handy guide on how to jumpstart your car, with or without jump leads. Simply follow these easy steps and read about the process in more detail below to get a clearer understanding of what’s involved. You can also buy a portable power pack that does all the hard work for you.

How to jump-start a car with jump leads 1. Position the two cars: Move another car with a similar size engine (Car 2) close to your car (Car 1) so that the engine bays are close together. Move all metal objects out of the way of both batteries and remove loose clothing. Check that both batteries and your jump cables aren’t damaged. 2. Connect the red jump lead: Connect the red jump lead’s crocodile clip to the positive (+) terminal on Car 2’s battery, then the other end to the positive (+) terminal on Car 1’s battery 3. Connect the black jump lead: Connect the black jump lead’s crocodile clip to the negative (-) terminal of Car 2’s battery, then the other end to an earthing point on Car 1. 4. Start the engine: Start Car 2’s engine. Wait about 5 minutes and then start Car 1. Remove the clips in reverse order to the above.5. Run or drive the car: Run or, preferably, drive Car 1 for at least 15 minutes to let the battery recharge and allow it to start on its own. 1. Get help. Gather some friends to help push

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I’ve had it with carp fishing until next year, my time will be spent upon the rivers, and I’ll be concentrating on some pike fishing too; in fact, I’ve just returned from my first proper pike outing of the year… I’m no pike expert; I can catch them when I put my mind to it, but I know anglers who seem to be able to charm the darn things out, and it’s an area I need to work on. I visited Rudyard Lake in Staffordshire this week to do a little bit of preparation for a forthcoming GO-Fishing (GO-Outdoors) social, and as it’s on my doorstep, I thought I do a little bit of deadbaiting. It may be early in the season for the purist, but it was cold enough to chill my bones, the water temperature is falling rapidly, so out came the gear! As I set up, the wind was pushing across my front, helping the numerous angler filled boats to drift and cover acres of ground as they chucked their lures into every nook and cranny. I was hoping to see a capture, but despite at least six boats on the water, it looked pretty hard work, with nothing seen and no-one reporting any action. My newest acquisitions, the Sonik SK4 XTR rod with it’s 3lb test curve is more than adequate to lob a deadbait fifty or so yards, and coupled with the Tournos 10000 reel, gives me enough cranking power to argue with a toothy snapper! I’ve also just picked up some stylish new drop off indicators from the team at R.A.D. Angling Design and I was keen to see them, well, drop off…. A simple running leger, a twin treble trace and some fish and I was ready to go. I like herring baits, so a hefty tail section was lobbed out on the first rod, and as a backup, I used the tail of a fresh mackerel on the other. I also like to inject an oil attractant, as I believe that not only does it increase the scent trail around my baits, it can often act as a visual indicator when something picks up the bait, and an oily slick rises to flatten the ripples; it’s almost akin to watching a couple of bright yellow barrels pop up whilst watching ‘Jaws’! Both rods were set, line passed through my new indicators, and I sat back to watch the quivertip on a third rod as I tried to pick off a perch or two. The wind had become very chilly, and as the hours passed, I still hadn’t seen any boat action, and I hadn’t seen that much on the quivertip either. A handful of small perch, admittedly almost glossy in sheen and in excellent condition had come to hand, but nothing on the pike rods. I was on the verge of packing up and retuning home
for a cuppa… ‘BUZZZZZZZ!’ My receiver bleeped and vibrated once; a short indication, but enough to attract my attention. I watched as the drop off indicator moved slowly towards the reel spool and then stopped, but the rod tip nodded and that was enough for me to lift the rod high and sweep the hooks home; I’d rather strike early and lose a fish than leave it and risk deep hooking… A series of dull thuds told me that the trebles were well set, and a short but spirited battle saw the predator safely netted. The hooks were lightly nicked across the jaws, and were removed in seconds so I could lift it for a quick snap (geddit?) and weighing, before the fish was returned. I can’t help but admire the clean lines of the pike, the mottled camouflage, and of course, the teeth! It’s a supremely effective predator, and one I take great delight in seeing close up, so after taking a minute or two to enjoy the capture, it was time to pack up and return home…. after all, I had a blog to write, and a deadline to hit!
LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
The County Senior League brought to end British Summer Time with a very busy league fixture list. There were 20 league fixtures, plus one U21 cup game. Premier Division First took on second at Middlecliffe Lane, with Houghton Main hosting Swllaownest FC. Swallownest took the opportunity to leapfrog their rivals into the lead, with a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Jordan Stocks and Mitch Ward. A brace from Daniel Bainbridge inspired Frecheville to a very impressive 6-1 away win over Frecheville. Frecheville have won six of their first seven league games and sit in third position. Millmoor Juniors dropped into fourth, as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Athersley Recreation Reserves at Sheerien Park. AFC Penistone Church climbed three places into a lower mid-table position, following a hard-fought 2-1 away win over Thorpe Hesley. Swinton Athletic continued their revival with a 1-0 away win over Handsworth Parramore Reserves. Swinton have won three of their last four league games after a tricky start to the season. Goals from Simon Bingley, Charlie Hobson and Steven Simmons gave Jubilee Sports an entertaining 3-2 win over Wickersley FC at Wickersley School. Division One As in the Premier Division, the top two also met in Division One with Denaby United hosting Silkstone United. Unlike the top division, there was no winner this time, with a chaotic game ending 3-3. Denaby go onto 20 points, thus remaining top by a point from Silkstone. Wombwell Main’s 100% start to the season,
but remain undefeated. They were held to a 3-3 draw at home to Sheffield Bankers. Third placed Caribbean Sports were also held, as they drew 1-1 at The Fleets against Kingstone United. Denaby Main took advantage of the top five all drawing, by beating AFC Dronfield 1-0 at Gosforth Playing Fields. The win takes Denaby into fourth position, level on 16 points with Caribbean, Wombwell and Kingstone. Matt Young scored four goals for High Green Villa, but it was not enough to prevent his side falling to a bizarre 7-5 home defeat to South Kirkby Colliery. It is the second time in three league games that South Kirkby have hit seven. Byron House ended a run of three consecutive league defeats, with a 3-3 draw against Davy FC at Norton Playing Fields. Division Two League leaders Brinsworth Whitehill’s eight game winning run came to an end, as they drew 2-2 at home with Houghton Main Reserves. Goals from David Sills, Chris Esberger, Antonio Fernandes and Rafael inspired Swallownest FC Reserves to a 4-1 home win over Treeton Terriers. The win takes Swallownest into second place. Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves fell to a 2-0 home defeat to New Bohemians. It is Hemsworth’s only second loss of the season.
New Bohemians are on the rise, with 16 points from the last 18 available and sit in fourth place. Goals from Matthew Jacobs and Jordan Wilson gave Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves a 2-0 away win over Sheffield Lane Top, and extend their unbeaten run to three games. Sheffield Lane Top remain pointless. North Gawber Colliery Reserves drew 4-4 with Kiveton Park at Woolley Miners Welfare. The point is Kiveton’s second of the season and takes them out of the bottom two. U21 Division Stocksbridge Park Steels U21 made it four wins from four, with a 9-1 away win over Bawtry Town U21. That makes it 20 goals in four games for the league leaders. South Kirkby Colliery U21 climbed into second place, with a 4-0 win over Millmoor Juniors U21 at South Kirkby Colliery Miners Welfare Ground. Davy FC U21 got themselves off the mark for the season, with a well-earned 2-1 win over Athersley Recreation U21 at Sheerien Park. U21 Cup Group A Caribbean Sports tightened their grip on Group A of the U21 Cup, as they beat Wombwell Main U21 2-1 at home. The win makes it 12 points from 12 in the cup for the Caribbean.

NO HAPPY RETURNS FOR FERGUSON AT POSH Doncaster Rovers suffered a miserable afternoon in League 1 as boss Darren Ferguson’s former club Peterborough United ran out 4-0 winners at London Road. Ferguson made two changes to his Rovers side from the midweek win at Shrewsbury Town with Luke McCullough and Andy Williams returning to the starting line-up in place of Keshi Anderson and Gary MacKenzie. The home side began brightly and Souleymane Coulibaly had a good opportunity in the opening minutes, he forced Thorsten Stuckmann into a good save and from the re-bound attempted a bicycle kick that went just over the bar. Erhun Oztumer was next to test the Rovers stopper with a great strike from the edge of the box, but the German refused to be beaten with a great diving save. From the resulting corner however the hosts made the breakthrough, with defender Gabriel
Zakuani heading home the set-piece inside nine minutes. Coulibaly went close to doubling Peterborough’s lead, he found space in the box before turning superbly and his powerful strike was denied only by the post as the home continued their onslaught on the Rovers defence. Andy Williams had Doncaster’s best chance of the half, he was played through and shot from a narrow angle forcing Ben Alnwick into a good save, but it was a missed opportunity for Rovers with Nathan Tyson free in the middle unmarked. Conor Washington and Coulibaly both had further opportunities to increase the lead for the hosts, but the greasy surface resulted in a loss of footing and weak efforts from the pair. Peterborough did extend their lead deservedly in the 36th minute, Coulibaly held the ball up well in the Rovers area before teeing up Oztumer who fired home into the bottom
LOCAL TEAMS UP FOR T’CUP!
A number of our local sides were keenly interested in the draw for the first round of the Emirates FA Cup on Monday October 26. The draw was shown live on BBC2 during a half-hour programme which began at 7.00pm. The first round takes place on the weekend of November 7/8 2015. The 48 clubs from League One and Two enter the FA Cup at this stage. They join the 32 winners from the previous round (fourth qualifying round) with £18,000 on offer to the victors.
REDFEARN - “A WORK IN PROGRESS”
Rotherham United boss Neil Redfearn says that building his side to compete in the Sky Bet Championship is a work in progress after they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday at AESSEAL New York Stadium. Despite encouraging signs in the first half The Millers were on the wrong end of the result in the South Yorkshire derby as goals from Lucas Joao and Fernando Forestieri sealed the Owls all three points despite Tom Thorpe’s late consolation. Reflecting on the evening’s events Redfearn admitted that despite the positives he saw in his team he was disappointed with his team’s reaction after the break following a solid first half and admits they could have dealt with the Sheffield Wednesday goals better in the defensive third. “We talked at half time about coming out the traps which we did against Reading and we got the crowd up and got the equaliser on the front foot but tonight we did exactly the opposite,” he admitted. “I think if you look at both goals they’re poor from our point of view. It’s poor defending from young Tom [Thorpe] who could have cleared it and a couple of things come off Lee [Camp] who’s done ever so well for us in recent times.” The Millers boss is under no illusions and he continued to add that the process to turn his squad into an established second tier outfit was a process that would take time and says he may add to the ranks in the
coming weeks. I knew when I came in and I said the other night that it might be two forward and one back and tonight is one back,” Redfearn explained. “If you look at what we’ve got in the size of the squad, I was hoping Newell was going to be fit and Mattock was going to be fit and they weren’t. It puts pressure on our squad and these boys probably need some help. We need to look at bringing one or two in to strengthen and give these lads a lift. As it went on with about 15 or 20 minutes to go we came back into it again. They’ve got that determination but I think at this moment in time there’s an imbalance in what we’ve got. What we’ve got to do is keep making little inroads and pick points up everywhere we can. We nicked a point against a good side the other night and we got ourselves half way there tonight and we ran out of steam but we’ve just got to keep persevering.”
right corner from the edge of the box. Coulibaly had another chance before the break, he went through on goal, but his heavy touch allowed Stuckmann to make the save as Rovers went into the break lucky to be only two goals behind. Aaron Taylor-Sinclair was introduced at half time, however was unable to prevent Peterborough from adding to their lead less than two minutes into the second half. Callum Elder struck powerfully from range, which Andy Butler blocked superbly with his head, however the rebound fell right back to the Peterborough man and he calmly slotted into the bottom
corner. Butler had the chance to pull a goal back for Rovers just moments later, however his header from a Rovers corner was cleared from the Peterborough line. Stuckmann was again on hand to keep the score-line respectable, doing well to keep out Jermiane Anderson’s deflected effort. Nathan Tyson came so close to scoring his first goal of the season, James Coppinger put a fine low ball into the box and the forward’s dinked effort was denied only by the crossbar. Coppinger himself then tested the Peterborough goalkeeper, the ball fell kindly to him on the edge of the box and
the United stopper produced a fine save to deny Rovers. However Peterborough made it four in the 74th minute when Coppinger lost possession 25 yards from goal, Washington pounced and smashed the ball into the bottom right corner. Coulibaly had another chance to score but the forward somehow missed the target. Rovers substitute Harry Forrester struck a great free-kick late on heading for the top corner, but he was unable to beat Ben Alnwick, rounding off a miserable day for Doncaster as Rovers suffered their heaviest defeat of the season.
DESPITE an even first half, Sheffield Wednesday took the South Yorkshire derby day honours as they earned a 2-1 victory over the Millers thanks to second-half strikes from Lucas Joao and Fernando Forestieri with Tom Thorpe replying for the hosts deep in stoppage time. There was little to choose between the sides in the first 45 minutes but the Owls were quick out of the blocks in the second period and they took the game by the scruff of the neck following back-to-back strikes by their foreign duo. Despite a late rally from the Millers which saw Thorpe notch his first goal for the club from close range, the home side were beaten by the clock as the Owls held on to record victory. Following their eye-catching draw with high-flying Reading in midweek, Millers’ supremo Neil Redfearn kept faith with his starting line-up for the visit of their near neighbours while there was a familiar face in the visitors line-up as Jack Hunt was named in the Owls starting eleven following his loan spell at the AESSEAL New Yorks Stadium last season. The Millers were quickly on the offensive and Tony Andreu showed fleet of foot to power from the heart of midfield to give Matt Derbyshire a glimpse of goal but a retreating Owls defender snuffed out the danger before Ross Wallace tried his luck from distance at the other end but Lee Camp was well-stationed to gather with ease. Moments later, Buxton got the better of a tussle on the right flank to drill a centre which saw Derbyshire nip infront of his marker to glance a header which fizzed across goal but Keiren Westwood showed quick footwork to collect smartly. In the Millers’ next attack, Westwood was called into action once again when Jonson ClarkeHarris took advantage of Derbyshire’s knockdown to fire a speculative effort from long range which the Wednesday ‘keeper gathered at the second attempt. Minutes later, Wallace cut inside with menace to fire an ambitious effort from distance which blazed into the home faithful behind the goal before ClarkeHarris made something out of nothing to spring the home side onto the attack but Derbyshire was unable to plant his cross into the danger area. Just before the half-hour mark, Farrend Rawson struck out a timely leg to prevent Kieran Lee breaking clear following a clever ball over the Rotherham rearguard before Toffolo caught the Owls napping with a quick throw paving the way for Andreu
to try an acrobatic effort which almost sneaked in at the near post as Westwood’s fumble took the ball behind. The home side almost made the visitors’ pay from the resultant corner when Andreu floated a delicate centre to the far post which saw Danny Collins rise highest to plant the ball back into the danger area but Derbyshire was unable to direct the ball goalwards as the Owls luckily scrambled the ball away from danger. In a whirlwind sixty seconds, Grant Ward got the better of Daniel Pudil to fizz a cross which fell invitingly for Paul Green at the far stick, who looked to strike goalwards but Lee was on his toes to clear the danger before Wednesday launched a quick counter which saw the Millers’ short of defensive cover and Forestieri released Barry Bannan, who hooked the ball into the air, before waiting for the ball to come down to power a header which narrowly cleared the home crossbar. The Owls were finishing the half stronger and Lee fired over the ball over from the edge of the box after Joao had outpaced Collins following an incisive ball forward before Forestieri almost took advantage of a Camp error but the Italian failed to trouble the home goal from an acute angle as the home stopper redeemed himself with a smart catch as he backtracked towards his own goal. With half-time approaching, Hunt became the first to see yellow for a cynical trip on Derbyshire, who looked to launch a Rotherham counter attack before the referee brought a fairly even first half to a close. However, the Millers were caught cold at the start of the second half as Wednesday struck twice in a matter of minutes. There looked little danger until Bannan injected pace into the move and Thorpe sold himself in the box to allow Forestieri to ghost into an inviting position before drilling a low effort which was saved by the feet of Camp, but the ball rolled tantalisingly into the path of Joao, who had the simple task of tapping into the empty net. The visitors were sensing the opportunity and Hunt’s threaded pass gave Forestieri an opportunity to strike but Collins was on-hand to block his effort but the respite was only temporary as from the resultant corner from Wallace, Pudil rose highest to plant a downward header which was initially saved by Camp but the ball popped into the path of Forestieri, who tapped home from close range. Following the goal, Clarke-Harris was yellow-carded and the Millers were almost the victims of their own downfall
as Green’s wayward pass released Bannan down the left flank and the exVilla midfielder planted an inviting centre which saw Joao look poised to make it three but under pressure, he fluffed his lines as his effort skied over the bar. The Millers were struggling to find their firsthalf rhythm until Buxton floated a centre which saw Derbyshire nip in-between defenders to plant a header which failed to trouble the visitors goal before Clarke-Harris was fouled in a central position enabling sub Maguire to curl the resultant free-kick over the Wednesday wall but Westwood dived smartly to his right to snuff out the danger. Moments later, Rawson towered highest to meet Maguire’s inswinging free-kick and although his effort shaved the upright, any goal would have been chalked off for offside. Bannan was fortunate to escape with a yellow card for hauling down Maguire in full flow following a nasty tackle and the Millers almost exacted retribution in the next phase of play when Collins’ knockdown header saw Clarke-Harris strike goalwards but his effort was blocked by two Wednesday defenders. Sam Hutchinson became the latest to see yellow after being penalised for simulation after Maguire seemed to pull out of a tackle before Forestieri’s eye-of-a-needle pass gave Bannan a shooting opportunity but he blazed over the bar from close range when he should have done better. At the other end, sub Jordan Bowery was quickest to react from the bits and pieces from Maguire’s free-kick but his effort bobbled harmlessly wide of the target before Rotherham had faint appeals for a spot kick as the ball struck Tom Lees in an awkward position but the referee waved away home protests. Derbyshire was the next in the book for a trip on Forestieri which summed up home frustration and Pudil harshly joined him minutes later for a tug on a Rotherham raider before Bannan almost put the gloss on the Wednesday performance when he dragged an effort wide of the target despite bearing down on goal. In the last action of the clash, Clarke-Harris skipped to the byline before his cross-cum-shot forced Westwood into a smart save before Rotherham reduced the arrears deep in stoppage time with almost the last kick of the game when Maguire’s swung a delightful centre to the far stick which saw Thorpe emerge from a ruck of bodies to poke the ball home from close range.

BLADES NEWS2015/16 BLADES HOME RUN HALTED BY LIONS United’s impressive run of home results came to an end at Bramall Lane following Millwall’s visit. Aiden O’Brien was credited with both of Millwall’s goals, whilst Jose Baxter netted for the Blades on Turn the Lane pink day. Following the midweek victory over Fleetwood, chief Adkins named an unchanged starting XI for the lunchtime encounter with Millwall. There was one change on the bench, where Flynn replaced Reed. United kicked towards the Kop first half, probably not by choice, and the first chance dropped to the visitors but Onyedinma’s halfvolley was wide. The first Blades chance was mightily close, but a shot from Adams, following Sharp’s ball through the defence, clipped the outside of goalkeeper
Archer’s right post. Campbell-Ryce made an impressive start, forcing Millwall onto the back foot, and he was involved with Sharp on the right before a Basham goalbound shot was blocked by Craig on 13 minutes. United made a confident start and the vocal crowd was in agreement so it was a surprise when the visitors grabbed the lead around the half hour mark. From Onyedinma’s cross, O’BRIEN rose higher than McGahey and Collins and his header perfectly found the top corner. As United prepared to restart, the Kop again sang and there was almost an instant response. Sharp, Adams, Freeman and Basham were all involved but Done opted for a steadying touch instead of a first time effort and was crowded out. On 34
minutes, Millwall went close to a second but Howard pushed away a shot from Saville after he danced around Basham, whilst as half-time approached a number of decisions from the officials prevented the Blades from building momentum. At the start of the second half Baxter replaced Done with United now operating with a 4-3-3 system. The substitute delivered a free-kick which Collins headed over on 52 minutes and took the corner from which Millwall broke away soon after but Howard touched over Onyedinma’s effort. In terms of possession United were well on top but Millwall’s defensive and midfield units were very disciplined in protecting goalkeeper Archer, as well as slowing the action down at every opportunity. Sammon was introduced and put pressure on the Millwall defence to set up an opportunity for Baxter but his half volley was wide -
although the midfielder was more accurate with his next chance. With 70 minutes gone, Sharp’s diagonal ball saw Adams stretching but able to pick out an unmarked Freeman and from the right-back’s low cross, BAXTER swept the ball into the corner of the net, beyond Archer’s right hand. The pressure dropped off after the equaliser and Millwall took advantage. After the visitors were awarded a free-kick which Blades fans thought should have been given to the home side, Ferguson’s break down the left saw O’BRIEN credited with bundling the ball home following ricochets involving Wallace and Howard. Late on United were back on the offensive but chances were limited. From a Baxter free-kick, Collins headed wide and the central defender was added to the forward line for four minutes of added time but a second leveller was not forthcoming.
UNHAPPY ADKINS Nigel Adkins admitted Saturday’s loss against Millwall at Bramall Lane was a difficult one to accept, as he felt a number of key decisions went against his side. A goal in each half from Aiden O’Brien secured the points for the Lions, despite substitute Jose Baxter equalising for the Blades with 20 minutes remaining and afterwards Adkins spoke of his frustrations. He commented: “It was a good game, an entertaining one, but one that ultimately ended in disappointment. There were two fouls not given in my opinion in the build-up to their first goal, one on Done and a clear shirt pull by the lad who scores on Collins. At half-time we made a change that worked out well, Jose comes on and has an impact centrally as we allowed the full-backs to provide the width. We score a great goal from Kieron Freeman’s cross and we
looked dominant and the only likely winner. Then low and behold they go and score against the run of play, but again I don’t know how the referee misses a clear foul in the build-up.” The Blades boss refused to blame the defeat on the match officials, but was nonetheless unhappy at one other incident in particular. He added: “I am holding my words close to my chest because we got beat, but the challenge on Dean Hammond in the middle of the park is an horrendous one which went unpunished. We wanted a tempo about the game, but at times it was very stop start and some of the decision making was very inconsistent. I am an honest person, I am up front and first and foremost I look at myself and my players, but overall I was very disappointed with the performance of the officials.”

OWLS NEWS2015/16 ALL GOING RIGHT FOR OWLS CARLOS PLEASED Eight unbeaten on the back of a comfortable win at local rivals Rotherham, a home cup-tie with Arsenal to follow – life is rosy in the Hillsborough garden. Early second half goals from Lucas Joao and Fernando Forestieri put the Millers to the sword as Wednesday powered on in the Championship. Tom Thorpe scored a consolation in stoppage time for the Millers but the damage was already done. Earlier, a lacklustre opening period promptly gave way to a second half stunner as quickfire strikes from the visitors ultimately
settled matters. It was all change for the Owls following the draw at QPR in midweek - six new faces were recalled - and in typical derby fashion, a lively start ensued at the New York Stadium. Glenn Loovens was on guard to nick the ball from the feet of Matt Derbyshire when the striker bore down on goal inside two minutes. The contest then entered a lull in terms of chances, although the approach play from both sides was neat and tidy. One Wednesday move on the half-hour spawned passes in double figures before Kieran Lee
was a whisker away from connecting with a Forestieri feed. Ten minutes before half time, Barry Bannan brushed the top of the net with a looping header – Lee thumped over the bar from 12 yards - and the interval came without real incident. But just after the resumption, that situation changed – and then some. First, on 46 minutes, Forestieri found room in the box and tested Lee Camp, who could only parry to the feet of Joao and the Portuguese side-footed home to give Wednesday the lead. Then four minutes later, it was two.
A Ross Wallace corner was deep to Daniel Pudil and the defender’s header back across goal fell to Forestieri for the hitman to double the advantage. It might have been three on the hour when Joao timed his run to perfection but sliced over the bar and Bannan almost capped a superb performance with a maiden goal only to twice miss the target after bursting into the box. Rotherham had little in response other than the occasional foray upfield which paid off right at the last when Thorpe finished a Chris Maguire free kick.
RINGING THE CHANGES In keepng with his policy of utilising the full squad, Carlos Carvalhal was set to ring the changes for the visit of Premier League Arsenal on Tuesday night. The seven changes made to Tuesday’s starting line-up for the visit to QPR had caused a few raised eyebrows in some quarters, but the policy paid off when the Owls played their second game in four days at
Millmoor and made it four points out of six on the road during the week. The Owls face the Gunners in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup and Carvalhal had four players definitely out, with three more nursing knocks. Missing last night were Michael Turner, Alex Lopez, Marco Matias and Modou Sougou, while Wednesday had fitness concerns over Keiren Westwood, Sam
Hutchinson and Glenn Loovens. However it was announced that young goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith would definitely feature. Ahead of the game Carvalhal told swfc.co.uk: “We must wait on some players but we know Turner, Lopez, Matias and Sougou will not play. We cannot take risks with anyone. For certain, Joe Wildsmith will play. Keiren Westwood is an amazing
goalkeeper as everybody knows and Joe is a very, very talented young goalkeeper. I have complete confidence in Joe. When he has come into the team, he has done fantastic. He made his international debut for the England Under-20s recently and was then called into the Under-21s and that is a sign of the progress he has made. So Joe will play in this game against Arsenal. This is an important game and one we want to win. The Championship is where we play every week and, of course, that is the priority but we want to go as far as we possibly can in the cups. We have a fantastic spirit at the club and I will have 100% confidence in whoever plays in this game.”
Carlos Carvalhal said his players’ response immediately after half time sealed victory at Rotherham on Friday night. Quickfire goals from Lucas Joao and Fernando Forestieri put the Owls in the ascendancy and although Tom Thorpe pulled one back at the last, it was too little too late for the Millers. Carvalhal said: “I was not too pleased with the first half performance, we could have done better and we talked about that in the break. We changed the way we play slightly and it made the difference. The players’ attitude was absolutely fantastic and that got us the win. We could have won the game 3-0 with the chances we had after that
THE SHAKEY
but that would have been hard on Rotherham. I wanted a clean sheet but I think 2-1 was probably a fair result.” Wednesday now begin preparations for Tuesday night’s Capital One Cup fourth round tie against Arsenal and Carlos emphasised that only now will the players look to the Gunners clash. He added: “None of the players have been talking about Arsenal, I swear to you. All week we talk about Rotherham, we focus on this game only. Now we can talk about Arsenal and focus on Arsenal. I will travel to London to watch the game against Everton and then come back and continue preparing and analysing for this game.”

SHOPPING IN MEADOWHALL? FANCY A BREAK? COME AND ENJOY THE TASTY EXPERIENCE! OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE BEEN LOVING THEM FOR YEARS! The Tasty Experience has finally come to Yorkshire, in its new home based in the Oasis Dining Quarter in Meadowhall With over 30 years of experience the Tasty Group of fish and chips shops have mastered the art of the perfect fish and chips. They are proud to be one of the first chip shops to pioneer the Battered Chips which are now taking the Nation’s taste buds by storm. Tasty Plaice has been serving the finest golden battered chip for around 30 years and have truly mastered the art of cooking. They only use the finest and freshest cod, haddock and plaice available on the markets with huge emphasis on customer service. Having enjoyed huge popular-
ity and success in the Merry Hill Centre in Dudley, and the Derby Intu shopping centre, Tasty Plaice have now taken on their newest unit, and hopes are high that this will be their biggest success story so far. Branch manager Karen has had a good start from April and is looking forward to the busy Christmas period - welcoming new shoppers and our existing customers, who have given the food a really good response and positive feedback. Several shoppers and Meadowhall staff themselves have referred to the new restaurant as a refreshing and popular choice and we have had several reports praising us for the best fish and chips and mouth-watering kebabs - with a
choice of donner kebab and soft succulent chicken tikka. To add to the glowing reports they have also achieved a Five Star Food Hygiene rating, again a sign of excellent management and service Tasty Plaice is proud to take its place in the Oasis Dining Quarter, alongside the likes of Nandos, KFC and Mcdonalds. This has only been possible due to our loyal customer base returning again and again to eat our food. We hope to fly the flag of the Battered Chip further afield in the future. We welcome you to come and join the revolution - the question is HAVE YOU HAD THE TASTY EXPERIENCE !!??
