“Give me a T.” “T” “Give me a T.” “T” “Oh, sod this. I’ll go to another café.” Thought I’d seen the end of the Trick or Treaters after I’d poured a bucket of urine over the last lot from my upstairs window, but no, within five minutes two much older looking kids knocked on the door and got the same treatment. I’d love to see them explain the smell when they take those police costumes back to the fancy dress shop. I took a photo of a mouse today. He didn’t say ‘cheese’, but I could tell he was thinking it. I tried to steal Halloween pillows from the supermarket. It had grim reaper cushions. “Doctor, doctor - I keep making people think I’m about to tell them a joke...” It seems like every week the WHO declares that another beloved dietary staple is “carcinogenic”. It’s almost like they’re hoping we die before we get old. After my first five sessions of therapy, my shrink said he thinks I’ll only need five more sessions and I’ll be cured of my random impulses to shout out lyrics from Bon Jovi songs. Woah! We’re halfway there... I’ve sacked my tennis doubles partner. I told him his services were no longer required. After losing one hand in an accident, I thought I’d never work again. Then I saw a job advertised, Wanted, one handyman.
Tickets purchased in person at the Arena Box Office are priced £36.75 - £68.25 (including booking fee).

SHEFFIELD MONEY IS HERE TO HELP Unexpected financial challenges always seem to happen at the worst possible times. Your washing machine breaks just as your car insurance needs renewing; the boiler stops working on the run up to Christmas. People are increasingly ignored by mainstream lenders when they need help the most, and as a result are turning to high cost alternatives. Sheffield Money has been set up for people who live or work in the city region, with the specific aim of improving access to fair and affordable financial alternatives. Products include loans, savings accounts, current accounts, white goods and appliances, as well as money and debt advice. Rather than selling products directly, Sheffield Money operates as a broker for existing suppliers with shared objectives, who have similar fair, ethical and flexible approaches to finance. It’s easy to use - just go to our website or call to speak to one of our advisors and we will look at your circumstances and work out which product or service will work
BLIND VETERAN FROM BARNSLEY TO MARCH ON REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY WITH BLIND VETERANS UK A blind veteran from South Yorkshire will march with other blind veterans to the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday (8/11) for Blind Veterans UK. Donald Hurst, 88, will join more than 100 other representatives of Blind Veterans UK, which this year celebrates its 100 years of service to vision impaired ex-Service men and women. Donald served in the Royal Army Service Corps from 1945 until 1948. After six weeks training where he learned to drive a lorry and ride a motorcycle, Donald was posted to HMS Haldane for further training. He then went with Royal Corps of Transport (RCT) 42 Company to serve in Palestine, Jordan and Egypt. Before Donald joined the Army, he was an apprentice Chef for four years and after he left the Army he worked for a hotel for a few years before moving on to work for several breweries in South Yorkshire. Donald started losing his sight in 2002 when after he woke up from a nap the radio times was blurred and the colours around him were jumbled up. Donald was later diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration. Donald says: “My GP said ‘Donald, you’re in trouble’. I had laser treatment to my eyes but it wasn’t to improve my eyesight, it was to stop it getting worse.” Donald started receiving help and support from Blind Veterans UK in 2012 after a friend who was receiving support from the charity referred him.
best for you. With over 4000 hits on the website, 600 product applications, and scores of advice referrals in the first two months, Sheffield Money has been set up by Sheffield people for Sheffield people, and is already proving to be beneficial for the residents of the city region. Financial worries can affect anyone at any time. The debt charity StepChange is contacted every year by nearly 600,000 people with problem debt. Debt owed on catalogues and home credit is rising, with the second highest level of demand for debt advice coming from Yorkshire. If you need help with your finances, you can book an appointment at Sheffield Money with a specialist money adviser who offers free and impartial advice on anything from budgeting, savings and pensions, to benefit eligibility, work and redundancy. Get in touch with Sheffield Money to see how we can help you!
Donald says: “I have no vision in my left eye and only a little bit in my right eye but Blind Veterans UK have given me training and equipment so I can look after myself and make the most of it.” Donald has received a magnification device to read documents, talking scales and a liquid level indicator to make tea. He’s also had IT training and cookery training at the charity’s Sheffield centre. Donald says: “I’m set to spend New Year’s Eve at the charity’s centre in Brighton and I cannot wait to celebrate with all those wonderful people.” Donald will march together with more than 100 other blind veterans on Remembrance Sunday for Blind Veterans UK. Donald says: “Remembrance to me means paying respect to the thousands upon thousands who didn’t come back from the First and Second World War and it’s an incredible honour to be able to do that with Blind Veterans UK.” Blind Veterans UK (formerly St Dunstan’s) was founded in 1915 and the charity’s initial purpose was to help and support soldiers blinded in World War I. But the organisation has gone on to support more than 35,000 blind veterans and their families, spanning World War II to recent conflicts including Iraq and Afghanistan. For 100 years, the charity has been providing vital free training, rehabilitation, equipment and emotional support to blind and vision impaired veterans no matter when they served or how they lost their sight. Visit www.blindveterans.org.uk to learn more about the charity’s 100 year history and how you can support its vital work today.

JOIN THE DEBATE IN YOUR AREA
Leaders at Sheffield City Council have announced the latest round of ‘Question Time’ style sessions over the coming months to discuss issues that matter to people in their local areas. This is now the fifth year of the ‘Cabinet in the Community’ programme - giving more people the opportunity to come and ask questions and get involved in the debate about Council issues across the city. This year the focus of the meetings will be asking local people for their views on how
they engage with the council. The events will include the usual opportunity to put any question of concern to the relevant Cabinet Member. Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council said: “Over the last few years we have found the Cabinet in the Community events to be a positive way of connecting with people across the city. We’ve had some really lively debates and discussions on issues that matter to people in those areas. “I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to take part in
some really important debates in each part of the city. I hope as many people as possible will use the sessions as a way of engaging in democracy at a local level.”
• 20 January –North • 27 January - South • 16 February – East • 24 February – North East • 16 March – Central
The items for discussion will be drawn up by local people and put to the Cabinet in the hour and a half session.
The first meeting, the South West, will be begin at 6.30pm (refreshments from 6pm) at St. Luke’s Church on Blackbrook Road, Lodge Moor, Sheffield S10 4LQ and the venues for the other meetings will be confirmed nearer the time. Residents will be able to submit written questions in advance of each meeting by emailing
The meetings will all take place between 6.30 and 8pm on the following dates: • 11 November – South West • 25 November – South East
CabinetintheCommunity@ sheffield.gov.uk with a deadline of five working days before the meeting. Where possible questions will be grouped together, so that a more focussed discussion can take place. Events will also be set up on Facebook for each of the Cabinet in the Community sessions, which residents can join to keep up with all the latest information. BIG SHEFFIELD STREETS AHEAD PREPARED THE SWITCH FOR WINTER, ARE YOU? A Winter roadshow will take place in Meadowhall so that the Streets Ahead team can advise residents and businesses on how to prepare for wintry weather. The team will be bringing their roadshow bus, as well as a gritter, to Meadowhall in Sheffield. The event will offer the public information on how to prepare for all kinds of severe weather, as well as inform them of how Streets Ahead is prepared to grit and maintain the roads during winter. Tuesday 10th November Orange Car Park at Meadowhall Cllr Terry Fox, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “Each year we ensure that the Streets Ahead team are ready to respond to manage whatever the weather brings. This year we also need the public to play their part. “I am encouraging everyone to visit our event and to speak to the team who can
give them hints and tips about how they can be ready. By doing little things such as clearing the pavement outside your house or using public transport when it does snow, this will help us all move around the city easier during the wintery weather.” Streets Ahead’s Operations Manager, Lynsey Connelly, said: “Our winter maintenance service operates 24-hoursa-day, seven days a week whenever the weather demands and we’re well prepared for the winter ahead. Younger visitors to the bus will also be able to climb aboard Steel City Gritter or colour in a picture of their very own gritter. For more information on winter maintenance in Sheffield visit www. sheffield.gov.uk/winter or follow us on Twitter @sccstreetsahead for the latest updates.

SUCCESSFUL INCREASE FOR STEEL CITY BEER & CIDER FESTIVAL This year's Sheffield Beer & Cider Festival has been the best ever according to the local branch of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. Over 5000 fans of Real Ale and Cider flocked to Kelham Island Museum last weekend for the 4 day festival, a 12% increase on last year. Between them they managed to drink almost 20,000 pints, up by 35% on last year, choosing from a range of over 250 different beers and ciders. Live music, a roving magician and a variety of food stalls and pub games all added to the festival's
appeal, with the setting of the Kelham Island Museum again proving a big hit. Organiser Louise Singleton said "We're delighted that we have managed to expand the festival and make it even more successful than last year. Our team of 137 volunteers have worked tremendously hard to ensure that everything ran smoothly, and the feedback from visitors has been excellent. We ordered 40% more beer and cider than last year and also did a re order while the festival was open!" In fact the festival was so popular

Said Louise "Friday is always a very busy night for us and we usually recommend that people turn up early to ensure they get in before we reach capacity. The fact we were full again early on the Saturday proves how popular the festival has become, and I would like to thank all our visitors for helping make it such a special event. We are already in discussions with the museum to increase capacity for next year to give even more people the chance to attend."
A tasting panel of local tradespeople, beer writers and brewing aficionados spent Wednesday evening judging the "Beer of the Festival" competition. Gold was awarded to the Mikey Rayer All-Dayer, from Crafty Devil Brewery of Cardiff, Silver was North Riding Brewery's Red Citra, and Bronze went to Triple Chocoholic from Saltaire Brewery. by the end shows how drinkers are becoming more aware of the appeal of natural cider. A real hit was "Ruby Suzie", a cider produced locally at Woodthorpe Hall by CAMRA members only 3 weeks ago, using a 19th century cider press. Feedback from visitors included plenty of comments on the excellent setting of Kelham Island, due partly to the area's heritage and the Museum itself, but also due to Kelham Island's reputation as
Sheffield's "Valley of beer", and it's proliferation of real ale pubs and breweries. Visitors even included a group of beer writers, brewers and bloggers from Atlanta in the USA, who timed their visit to the UK to coincide with the festival, enticed by Sheffield's international reputation as a "beer destination". A charity collection was held during the festival in support of the Master Cutler's Challenge and St Luke's Hospice.

YORKSHIRE-BASED AWARD WINNING CHILDREN’S THEATRE COMES TO THE CIVIC Halloween may be over but The Civic continues to provide treats for all the family as their season heads into the festive period with a range of interactive, creative and imaginative performances on a Sunday afternoon. Helen Ball (Chief Executive) comments: “Our Family Sunday’s are a great way to introduce your little ones to the arts and theatre. As a venue, we are keen to make a trip out to The Civic a regular family activity, and so we work hard to ensure these are affordable and accessible; with shows often only lasting between 30-60 minutes.” International Award Winning Puppetry company Garlic Theatre, take you on a journey to One Shoe Island where farmer Bunyan is fishing for shoes helped by little Roo and a one eyed welly boot. Their little world of fun and laughter is interrupted by the discovery of a naughty red boot who threatens to walk all over them. Shoe Kangaroo goes on an adventure to save her little Roo and discover what the boot is really up to. Shoe Kangaroo and the Big Bad Boot’s magical transformations and beautifully crafted shoe puppets combine in ‘a quirky imaginative show, wonderfully bonkers! You will never look at your shoes in the same way again’ (Rob Allerston Phoenix Theatre).
Beginning the family festivities at The Civic, and following on from last year’s much loved production of Monday’s Child, highly praised Leeds company tutti frutti will once again team up with York Theatre Royal to stage the premiere of Olivier nominated playwright Emma Reeves’ new adaptation of the enchanting children’s tale Snow Child at The Civic on Sunday 29 November. As autumn leaves fall and the foxes, wolves and bears hide among the trees, tutti frutti tell a magical story about family, love and the power of dreams. Inspired by Arthur Ransom’s adaptation of ‘The Little Daughter of the Snow’, Snow Child is a girl like no other. Emma Reeves said about the new version: “Wendy Harris (Director of tutti frutti) approached me with her plans for adapting the old Russian tale and I was instantly intrigued and could see how it could form the basis of a show which addressed fundamental questions about parents and children and, generally, what it means to be human. Above all, I thought it was a magical story. I want our audience to love the character of the Snow Child as much as I do. I want them to feel they’ve been transported to a world where anything is possible, and met an irresistible heroine - who feels the same as they do about parents: they

can be an incredible nuisance sometimes, but in the end you have to feel sorry for them. It’s a story with a winter setting, which uses all the magic of winter - but ultimately I want it to be heartwarming.” Shoe Kangaroo and The Big Bad Boot is at The Civic on Sunday 15 November at 2.30pm. Tickets are £7 full price, £6 concession, £5 children. Recommended for ages 4+ Snow Child is at The Civic on Sunday 29 Novemeber at 2.30pm. Tickets are £7 full price, £6 concession, £5 children. Recommended for ages 5+ For more information and to book visit www.barnsleycivic.co.uk or call the Box Office on 01226 327000.
The Walkabout Bar on Carver Street in Sheffield is donating 10% of its weekend food sales to the Movember charity throughout November. Order food at the Walkabout Bar on any Saturday or Sunday during November and 10% of your food order will be donated to the charity - there has never been a better time to try a Kangaroo steak or a Wild Boar burger! The recently refurbished bar has also partnered with local Ice Hockey team, the Sheffield Steeldogs, and will be growing moustaches throughout the month – you can follow their progress at http://moteam.co/walkabout-sheffield or at www.facebook.com/walkiesheffield. Walkabout General Manager Shannon Sanders said, “We’re big fans of the Movember charity and raising awareness for men’s health in general. I’ve personally known people affected by prostate and testicle cancer so I feel a duty to spread the Movember word as much as possible. Last year Walkabout raised £14,000. This year we’re looking to smash that and raise at least £19,000!” The Movember foundation is responsible for the sprouting of millions of moustaches around the world throughout November in a bid to promote men’s health. Since 2003 the foundation has raised over £400 million.

DRIVING IN FLOODS AND HEAVY RAIN Advice from the AA’s flood rescue team
Driving in wet conditions can be hazardous and even drivers with local knowledge can be caught out during heavy downpours, as the most modern road surface is still susceptible to standing water. Standing water creates a potential aquaplaning hazard as well as reducing visibility. Take it easy through standing water and if the steering does become unresponsive due to the rain, ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually. Only attempt to drive through flood water if you know it’s not too deep and maintain a steady, slow speed to avoid creating a bow wave. The air intake on many cars is low down at the front and just an egg cupful of water in the combustion chamber is enough to wreck an engine. Water doesn’t compress and the piston in effect hits a wall, bending or breaking a con rod. Driving fast - even if the intake’s above the water level - could cause water to be ingested. If you break down in heavy rain don’t prop the bonnet open while you wait for the patrol to arrive. The engine will be more difficult to start again if the electrics are all rain-soaked. In heavy rain • You must use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced - generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet)(Highway Code). • You may use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (Highway Code). • Improve vision in wet weather by renewing windscreen wipers if worn or damaged. • Stopping distances increase on wet roads. Double the distance you leave between you and the car in front. • If steering becomes unresponsive due to the rain, ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually.

Floods and standing water
Fords
Don’t enter flood water that is moving or more than 10cm (4 inches) deep. Allow oncoming traffic to pass first and drive slowly and steadily to avoid creating a bow wave. Test your brakes as soon as you can after leaving the water. Don’t try driving through fast-moving water, such as at a flooded bridge approach – your car could easily be swept away. Slow down and try to avoid standing water if you can.
Don’t assume that a ford is always safe to cross just because the road goes into the river on one side and comes out on the other. The depth of the water at a ford, and its flow rate, will change with the weather.
Driving fast through standing water is: • Dangerous - tyres lose contact with the road and you lose steering control in what’s known as ‘aquaplaning’. If you do experience aquaplaning, hold the steering wheel lightly and lift off the throttle until the tyres regain grip. • Inconsiderate - driving through water at speeds above a slow crawl throws water onto pavements, soaking pedestrians or cyclists. You could face a hefty fine and 3-9 points if the police believe you were driving without reasonable consideration for other road users. • Expensive - the air intake on many cars is low down at the front of the engine bay and it only takes a small quantity of water sucked into the engine to cause serious damage. All engines are affected but turbo-charged and diesel engines are most vulnerable. As you drive slowly through standing water, use a low gear so the engine rev’s are higher; water in the exhaust could otherwise damage the catalytic convertor.

Forget X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent now’s the time to audition for Haven Holidays. They’re looking for talented performers to take to the stage in 2016. If you are 18 or over this could be just the opportunity you’re looking for! Haven Holidays entertain over 2.5 million guests and owners during a 34 week season across their 36 UK family holiday parks. Contracts will commence January/February 2016 and include taking part in daytime staged events. Steve Donnelly, Head of Entertainment said, “We have one of the best creative teams in the Holiday entertainment sector and every year work to bring some of the most current trends alive on our stages in our production shows, light entertainment formats and staged events. We are on the lookout for talent who are seeking a career not just a summer season.” So if you’ve got what it takes to be a Haven FunStar and would like to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Duncan from Blue, get yourself along to one of their auditions.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
A return to the beautiful Rudyard Lake in Staffordshire this week, mainly to help host an unusual day out, but also with a little bit of fishing too….it had to be done! I do some freelance media work for the GOFishing concept store in Stoke-on-Trent; it’s a concession within the main GO-Outdoors store, one in which a lot of effort and money has been spent to create a much more pleasing customer experience for the local angler. A huge new range of top end brands, comfy seating, a coffee machine, impressive display space and much more have been put in place to give the angler a store which offers a lot more than of old, and somewhere he can sit and share fishy tales whilst enjoying a coffee; something like a tackle shop of days gone by where it would take an hour to buy a packet of hooks as anglers swapped banter and picked up the latest tips about where to catch that big fish… As part of task, I have helped organise a few events which are hoped to forge a sense of ‘community’ amongst our customers, help them get to know our staff, and perhaps fish
REDFEARN LOOKING FOR MORE Neil Redfearn was left disappointed with his side’s overall display following their 3-0 defeat at the hands of high-flying Derby County. Goals from Andreas Weimann, Jacob Butterfield and Richard Keogh ensured the hosts recorded maximum points at the iPro Stadium in a game which left the Millers’ boss frustrated at his side’s competitiveness in Derbyshire. “I thought they were miles in front of us if I’m honest,” Redfearn admitted. “The thing that disappointed me the most was that we had a little spell after half time and showed a little bit of passion, but not enough in no uncertain terms as to what I, and this football club expects. “We’ve had a good turnout today with good numbers of supporters and it’s not acceptable. “I’ll accept the odd mistake and passes are going to be misplaced and all that but not a lack of effort and work rate and wanting to win.” The Millers were undone by an early strike from Weimann before Butterfield added a second before the interval and Redfearn conceded that his side failed to threaten Scott Carson’s goal despite a promising start against the Rams. “We talked about how they would split up at the back and how Thorne would drop in and pick the ball up in midfield and we worked on it all the way through the week. “We started off quite bright for about five minutes but once we let them settle into their stride we never laid a glove on them and that’s really disappointing. “To be honest they were worthy 3-0 winners. We’ve got a lot of work to do and we’ve definitely got to bring some players in. These players have got to feel that they’ve got to fight for their shirts and I didn’t see enough of that today.” The Millers boss is keen to lift his players and did take time to commend the efforts of second half substitute Paul Green who turned in a committed performance following his introduction against his former employers. “At this moment in time we’re feeling a bit sorry for ourselves and you can’t do that,” Redfearn admitted. “I thought when Paul Green came on he got on the ball and played and showed a big heart and I mentioned that afterwards. He might not be the most fashionable but he’s got a big heart and he wants to play and that’s the type of players you want."
a venue they may not have fished before. The in store staff of Dave and Deb do much of the work, but my role is to help promote these gatherings, and this week, Rudyard Lake was the venue, pike were the target. We offered a small group of discount card holding customers, five in this instance, a free day out. GO-Fishing paid for their tickets, their car parking and even a barbeque, all they had to do was turn up and fish! In the past, we have organised a series of free to enter matches, including a 24 hour carp match, this was more of a sociable ‘fish in’. After meeting on the car park, tickets were issued, and our group dispersed to set up. Techniques ranged from deadbait to lure, and as our anglers set up, the barbeque was fired up to get those all-important sausage sandwiches on the go! The rain continued to slant across the water, so most people were firmly ensconced under their brollies, but it didn’t stop the banter, and Dave grudgingly manned the barbeque beneath the hastily erected brolly! If you noticed a lot of smoke signals last week, it was probably us as Dave tried not to suffocate! The rain looked set for most of the day, and our group watched motionless indicators as the day continued. I, on the other hand, had chucked a dropshot
rod in the van as I had hoped for an hour or two away from taking pictures to target a floating jetty in search of perch. It’s a 3-8g rated rod, very light and sensitive, and coupled with a small 2500 series reel, it offers an extremely deft way to explore the varies nooks and crannies of any structure which perch love. I used a selection of lures and hooks from one of the excellent Ecogear ‘Pocket In’ sets, a handy snap-lock box with all you need to get fishing. Initially, I had set up a more conventional dropshot rig with a small hook and lure, but found the fish just a couple of feet down in fifteen feet of water; hardly dropshot fodder, so I quickly changed to a rig which would allow a vertical jig, or a short cast and retrieve. A tiny pink lure was threaded on to the hook, and it was lowered to the waiting hordes! A thump on the rod tip told me that the lure had been whacked by a stripey, and a series of fish to around 8oz filled the next hour or two (or three!) It kept me busy, following the shoal around the jetties, with often a tweak of a foot or so needed to maintain contact. It was fast and furious fun, and I even picked up a micro pike whilst the others continued their vigil behind silent alarms. As dusk fell, the action became even more frenetic, and
I finished with a tally of over one hundred ‘wasps’ and a solitary mini pike, nothing big, but had it been competition fishing, then I estimate well over ten metres of fish in a few short hours; probably enough to qualify, and certainly more than our guests who had all unfortunately blanked. Overall, despite a lack of fish, the day should be counted a success with new friendships made, and many burgers eaten. All anglers did enjoy the day, which leads us to think we should start to organise another one soon; maybe the river for some chub, and hope the rain stops this time!
ON FELIPE WILLIAMS POSTMILLERS TAKE FERGUSON MATTIONI SIGNING COLCHESTER DUO ON TRIAL Rotherham United manager Neil Redfearn has confirmed that the club have taken Leon Best and Adam Drury on trial. The Millers boss revealed that the pair had trained with the club on Monday during his pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to the Riverside Stadium to face Middlesbrough. Redfearn has been impressed by the early displays of the former Newcastle United frontman Best and believes his experience could prove invaluable to the players already in his squad. “What Leon Best carries is Championship experience and Premier League experience at a time when the lads up front maybe need it as a helping post. “He’s a proven scorer and he’s been out of the game for a little bit but he looks sharp and he looks fit. “It’ll be good for Jonson or Matty Derbyshire and Jordan to have someone like that to go and compete for places but we’re looking at all areas.” Best, who began his career as a youngster at Notts County, has been out of contract since leaving Blackburn Rovers but the Millers boss insists he has kept up his fitness since leaving Ewood Park. “He’s 29-year-old and he’s a fit boy and he’s got no weight on him” Redfearn told www.themillers.co.uk “He’s lean and he looks like he’s been looking after himself and we’ve just go to see if that hunger is still there. “It’s just a case of seeing if he’s capable of being able to produce what he’s capable of.” Drury meanwhile began his career as a youngster at Manchester City and most recently had a short stay with Bristol Rovers. The 22-year-old has had loan spells with Burton Albion and St. Mirren and is currently a free agent. Redfearn is keen to assess both Best and Drury before making any final decisions and is hoping to see them in match action before committing himself. “Ideally we want to look at them in training and then at least in a game, if not a couple.”
Gaffer explains that former AC Milan defender comes “highly recommended”. Darren Ferguson hailed the arrival of Brazilian loanee Felipe Mattioni until January. The Everton loanee could make his debut on Saturday in the FA Cup first round, just months after playing in La Liga. “His last game was against Real Madrid for Espanyol and his first game for us might be Stalybridge,” said the Scot. “It’s a bit of a contrast! “He’s a good player. His CV is quite outstanding really. He’s a good technician; he’s a full back who can play wing back. “He plays similarly to what we want to do. He’s a decent defender and Roberto (Martinez) has highly recommended him so you have to go with that because he’s a good, experienced manager.” Mattioni joins his new Toffees teammate Conor Grant at Keepmoat Stadium and the latter could not have wished to make a better impact on his debut against Colchester United; scoring a wonderful curled effort from 25 yards. “Both of them coming together is always a good thing,” said Ferguson. “Conor is a good player; we know he can get a goal. We encouraged the players to have a shot and it’s just a beautiful goal. He will get better; he’s not used to the high energy and tempo. “We watched Conor play at left back but we thought that he could fill in in midfield and we had to take him before anyone else did! “The result won’t change the fact that I’m still after a defender but they (Grant and Mattioni) can improve us.”
Forward’s frustrations lifted with the help of fans and new manager Ferguson. Andy Williams thanked the Doncaster fans for their patience after ending a barren run in front of goal during Saturday’s 2-0 win over Colchester United. The 29 year old ended a six game streak without a goal with an emphatic second half finish. “Its been a frustrating few weeks for me personally but it was nice to get on the scoresheet and get a much needed win for the boys,” Williams said. “I thought we massively deserved it. We dominated the game and it could have been more. We showed what we’re capable of and why we probably should be higher than we are. “I think they (the supporters) have stuck by me and it was nice to get the applause and the song sung towards me so it was good.” Williams, who arrived in the summer from Swindon Town having netted 22 goals for the Robins last term, hailed the positive influence of manager Darren Ferguson who paired him with Nathan Tyson for the first time. “I think he (Ferguson) has been a lot more positive and he’s got a mentality around the place where he makes everyone a bit more on edge,” he said. “The way he’s got us playing is positive and everyone in the team knows their roles and what we’ve got to do. “For the strikers, he’s got them (the midfield) feeding us. For me, the chances haven’t been coming so I haven’t been that frustrated. “The only frustration has been my overall performances. I put in a good performance though and the goal was a bonus. “I was happy with it (the partnership with Tyson). I realised it could be me and him a lot when I came here, I thought we were lively and happy with how it worked.”

BLADES NEWS2015/16 BLADES NOT SO SOLID AT CREWE United’s Halloween nightmare was defeat at Crewe on Saturday. Despite an encouraging start, Ryan Colclough’s second half goal earned Sky Bet League One’s bottom club the points at Gresty Road. Harris made his first appearance of the season after a groin injury as boss Adkins made four changes in total. Coutts, Flynn and Baxter all returned with Freeman, Campbell-Ryce, McGahey and Kieran Wallace dropping to the bench. Early on, amongst the chances, it was clear that Flynn and captain Basham were part of the defence with Hammond and Coutts paired together in central midfield for the first time. Within a minute, a good opportunity saw Done’s shot blocked by a combination of Nugent and goalkeeper Garratt.
An unmarked Baxter headed a Harris free-kick back across goal and then Adams scuffed wide after Sharp and Done linked up as United made a bright start. Just eight minutes had elapsed when the home side only half-cleared a corner and Harris sent back a 35-yard volley, which Garrett got his body behind. Crewe’s first opportunity, on ten minutes, saw a number of ricochets and tentative challenges ahead of Haber flashing a shot wide. United were quickly back on the offensive and Garratt had to push away a 30yard effort from Baxter, whilst Collins headed just over a Harris corner on 20 minutes. As the half progressed, United’s chances dried up and the home side showed a little attacking intent themselves. Hammond was robbed
by Colclough but shot wide and Haber, under pressure from Collins, headed wide a Guthrie cross. Close to the break, Adams failed to find the target with two opportunities and following a breakaway down the right, Done, at full stretch, was unable to attach himself to Flynn’s cross. The start of the second half saw Basham block a Saunders effort before referee Graham turned away penalty appeals at both ends. Adams was booked when he fell in the box under a challenge from Turton, who was already on a yellow card, whilst there were no sanctions when Saunders went down in the area following a clash with Collins. Howard was forced into a save from Colclough following a corner as Crewe threatened to get on top but the Blades hit back with chances. Hammond and Baxter, both from outside the box, stung the palms of goalkeeper Garratt.
However, the next opportunity was decisive and it was the home side who opened the scoring. A diagonal delivery from the right saw Basham win the initial header but the ball dropped to the unmarked COLCLOUGH to volley home from the edge of the box. Soon after Jones curled a free-kick wide for the hosts and Adams fired over before Adkins introduced Sammon and Scougall. As the final five minutes approached, Hammond arrived late in the box but headed wide a deep Harris cross, whilst a couple of corners put Crewe under pressure too. In the final minute Flynn half-volleyed over and in added time a number of balls were pumped into the home box but the Crewe rearguard held on to collect the points - even when Garratt missed a Harris cross.
GAFFER REFLECTS ON CREWE LOSS Nigel Adkins acknowledged Saturday’s 1-0 reversal at Crewe Alexandra was a difficult loss to accept. Ryan Colclough scored the decisive goal of the game in the secondhalf for the Alex, but speaking afterwards the Blades bossed bemoaned his side’s missed chances, especially those in the first-half. The Gaffer reflected: “We lost the game, so it’s a disappointing defeat. There is an expectation for us to be winning football matches and we haven’t done it against the bottom of the league. “We made a few changes, started brightly and could have scored on a number of occasions. The fact of the matter is we didn’t and at the
other end we have been punished and conceded another poor goal, despite having bodies there to deal with both the first and second ball. “We will find out a lot about the players now in terms of character, because we have to put this behind us and go again in a positive manner.” Adkins, who refused to make excuses for weekend defeat, continued: “We won’t hide away from these disappointments but we have to believe, I will reiterate what I have said since day one, there are no easy games in this division. “The first goal in games is crucial we have emphasised that to the players, so when we don’t take our chances it gives the opposition something to hold on to and when they score it increases their belief. “Give Crewe credit they dug in and went on to get the victory, but for me we have to do more, we need to be more ruthless in both penalty areas and clinical in front of goal.”

OWLS NEWS2015/16 OWLS NOW UNBEATEN IN TEN Emulating the magnificent cup win over Arsenal on Tuesday was always a tough ask but the most important thing was the points – which Wednesday delivered against Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough. A second half strike from Fernando Forestieri sealed victory, whilst extending the Owls’ unbeaten run into double figures. The visitors delivered a resolute display but once Wednesday took the lead, their second success of the week was never really in doubt. They made an
enterprising start to the game, with Atdhe Nuhiu a whisker away from connection on a Daniel Pudil cross inside five minutes. Forest came back and an open contest saw Nelson Oliveira go close from Jamie Ward’s accurate feed. The influential Barry Bannan slipped a delightful ball through to Kieran Lee just before the half-hour but Dimitar Evtimov was out to smother the danger and the debutant keeper did well to parry a Pudil piledriver moments later. Lee then aimed a fine chip that beat Evtimov
but also the far post as the Owls shaded the first half, certainly in terms of chances – until nine minutes before the break, Forest squandered the best one when Ward headed a Daniel Pinillos cross wide from close range. The Owls came out for the second half on the front foot and Nuhiu headed over having been picked out well by Bannan. Carlos Carvalhal introduced Lucas Joao to the attack in a bid to turn the screw on Forest, who rarely emerged from their own half. And the Midlanders’
resolve was finally broken on 68 minutes. Forestieiri skillfully took a high ball under his control and moved away from his marker to smash a fierce shot beneath Evtimov and into the bottom corner. Joao might have doubled the advantage ten minutes from time, drilling wide after unselfish work from Jeremy Helan, but the Owls saw out the match squarely in the driving seat to go into the midweek clash against league leaders Brighton with another shot of confidence.
OWLS SHOW SUPPORT Sheffield Wednesday players, mascots, staff and fans showed their support to Breast Cancer Care at the
Owls home fixture against Nottingham Forest last Saturday. The organisation was the official charity
partner for the game and the support will hopefully raise awareness around the national charity that works in the local community to deliver services locally and make a difference in Sheffield. Breast Cancer Care volunteer Tony Herbert will be visiting Sheffield Wednesday’s Education Programme to talk and educate BTEC Sports Studies students around the subject of breast cancer
and the chances of men developing the disease. Tony was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2012 and spoke honestly and openly about the importance of being breast health aware. The earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the higher the chances of successful treatment. The charity are raising awareness across the UK of the signs and symptoms and the importance of going to your GP if you notice any changes.
FORESTIERI’S UNBELIEVABLE MONTH Following on from Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Fernando Forestieri has reflected on what he described as an unbelievable month. The Owls have remained undefeated for ten games, a run that stretches back to midSeptember. And Wednesday have certainly been put to the test in that period. After victories over Preston, Rotherham and Forest in the Championship, as well as the 3-0 Capital One Cup win over Arsenal in October, Forestieri reflected: “I can’t believe this last month. We have played so good against Rotherham, Arsenal and now today. “I’m very happy for Sheffield Wednesday. “We showed everyone that we are together and we play with heart. The Forest game is good because it’s one goal and three points.” The 25-year-old has scored four goals in eight games since his arrival at the club and he hopes for much more to come.
He added: “I hope I can go on to score more goals for this cub. We need to carry on working hard for each other. “I have to thank my team mates because if they didn’t work so hard, then I wouldn’t have scored that goal. “We all help each other and we are doing it well.”
PRICES SET FOR QUARTER FINAL CLASH Prices have been confirmed for the Owls’ Capital One Cup quarter final clash with Premier League side Stoke City. The tie, taking place at the Britannia Stadium on Tuesday 1 December, will see adults pay £20, with concession prices set at £10 for over 65s/ disabled supporters, while under 17s’ tickets are £5. The Owls are awaiting confirmation on ticket allocation and sale dates, which will be announced later this week.
