Dynamo said of his new venture, “After four series of Magician Impossible I was ready for a new challenge and for a long time I have wanted to take my show to the stage. I am hoping that like I did for magic on TV, I can reinvent the live magic show and produce something fans have never seen before. This is something I have been working towards for the last 20 years and I can’t wait to amaze audiences what I have in store for them”. SHEFFIELD THEATRES SECURE FUNDING TO LAUNCH INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES

Sheffield Theatres has secured funding from the BoshierHinton Foundation to become the first venue in the North of England to offer innovative captioning facilities for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The theatre will now be able to offer individuals handheld tablets in the Studio Theatre to provide captioning facilities, beginning with Deborah Bruce’s comedy, The Distance. Users of the new tablets will have the freedom to sit wherever they choose in the auditorium to enjoy the production, with the handheld tablets providing accompanying

text which can be altered in size according to needs. This is a more comfortable and convenient alternative to the standard captioning, which is usually offered to the side of the stage on a large screen. This new service further enhances the Access programme at Sheffield Theatres, which already offers Captioned, Signed and Audio Described performances, as well as Touch Tours of sets and costumes, theatre familiarisation tours and Relaxed Performances for selected shows. Claire Murray, Communications and Fundraising Director

commented, ‘It’s vitally important to us that we are able to welcome everyone to our performances. Thanks to the funding from the Boshier-Hinton Foundation we are delighted to be able to now offer captioning using tablet devices. This will enable us to caption performances in the Studio Theatre which, due to the great flexibility of the space, has been impossible in the past. We have received great feedback from audience members who have trialled the tablets so far and we’re excited to see how these devices can support us in further improving our accessibility in the future.’

Further tablet captioned performances in the Studio Theatre are planned for the theatres’ spring season, on sale now. For further details please contact Sheffield Theatres’ Box Office on 0114 249 6000 or email access@sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Tickets for The Distance can be purchased from Sheffield Theatres’ Box Office in-person, by phone on 0114 249 6000 or online at sheffieldtheatres.co.uk and are priced from £14.00 (Concessions, school and group discounts available). A transaction fee of £1.50 (£1.00 online) applies to all bookings made at the Box Office (excluding cash).

1135 NEWS & INFORMATION

COUNCIL TO SAVE WAGE BOOST FOR MILLIONS THROUGH LOW PAID WORKERS STREETS AHEAD REFINANCING The Council is proposing to make savings to the Streets Ahead contract by re-negotiating the funding arrangement. The Council is seeking to take advantage of lower interest rates being offered in the financial markets as part of the Council’s drive to reduce costs that don’t impact directly on public finances. These proposals are being discussed by Cabinet Members this week (11th November). If approved, negotiations with the current banks that provide funding for the contract and with other potential new funders will begin. The intention is to see if an agreement can be reached to offer more favourable interest rates than those achieved in 2012. If this is achieved then it is expected that between £7 million and £14 million could be saved over the remainder of the Streets Ahead contract (22 years). Cllr Ben Curran, Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, said: “It is important that we take advantage of the fact that interest rates are lower now than in 2012. Everyone knows the council is facing huge budget reductions due to government cuts. We do our best to reduce costs on back office spend to that we can direct as much resource as possible to protect front line services that the public rely on. “

Thousands of Sheffield workers are now being paid above the national living wage with city leaders calling for more businesses to take up the deal. This comes as Sheffield City Council confirms it will be paying a minimum of £8.25 per hour to all of its workers from April. This is £1.05 more than was set by Government as a new minimum wage, announced by George Osborne earlier this year. Sheffield City Council was one of the first in the country to adopt a living wage two years ago for all its employees – setting the bar for other local industries to follow. Already many of the council’s partners have followed suit and also introduced the living wage, but more can still be done, say leaders. As part of National Living Wage Week they are now urging all city businesses to get on board. Councillor Ben Curran, Cabinet Member for Resources at Sheffield City Council, said: “Life below the living wage is hard and is a life of wants and worries for many workers and their families. “That is why we adopted a living wage for our staff and encourage our contractors to pay it, as well as promoting the living wage to all businesses in Sheffield. What this means is more people cooking our children’s meals in schools, maintaining the city’s streets and roads and repairing council homes are paid a fair wage.”

FATHER AND SON DUO COMPLETE COAST TO COAST RAISING THOUSANDS FOR CANCER CHARITY A dedicated family duo from Doncaster, who have been affected by cancer more than once, completed a gruelling coast to coast walk in October to raise vital funds for a hospital close to their hearts. Ryan Sheppeck and his dad, Tony, plus family friend, Martin, decided to take on the ultimate challenge of crossing the country on foot, to raise funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, after both Tony and Ryan's mum Margaret were diagnosed with cancer. In 2010, Ryan's dad, Tony (55) was diagnosed with Throat Cancer and after an initial tonsillectomy at Doncaster Royal Infirmary; he was referred to Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield for chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. In a cruel series of events and despite Tony's future now looking more positive, Ryan's mum Margaret was also diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013. But after undergoing a mastectomy followed by treatment at Weston Park Hospital, Margaret wasn't as fortunate and sadly lost her fight with the disease aged 46 after it spread to her brain forming an untreatable tumour.

Spurred on by an unbelievably difficult few years and after witnessing the unwavering support both his mum and dad received at the hands of the staff at Weston Park Hospital, Ryan was adamant he would give back to the hospitals dedicated charity to thank them for the commitment, compassion and care still shown to his dad today- 5 years on from diagnosis. It was decided that on the 5th October, Ryan, Tony and Martin would set off from Robin Hoods Bay on the East Coast and cover 192 miles whilst encompassing the three national parks of the North Yorkshire Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, before arriving at St Bees 10 days later. Ryan, who had always had a love of backpacking said, "The support Weston Park Hospital provided to my parents deserves sincere respect and praise and the trek was a way of trying to repay some of that kindness." "Even after receiving the all clear from doctors, a battle with cancer isn't over- the following emotional and physical consequences can be severe and in my dad's case, he had suffered severely damaged saliva glands creating difficulty in even

the simplest of tasks that many of us take for granted. To complete the hike was a sign of the strength and determination the hospital instilled in my dad following treatment." Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. In 2012, just 2 years after being diagnosed and whilst coming to terms with the side effects of his treatment and learning to manage life after cancer, Tony and his daughter Kim took on a 50 mile, 4 day trek across the Grand Canyon raising an outstanding £8,000 for the cancer charity. Ryan continued, "Sadly due to study commitments I wasn't able to join my dad and sister in the Grand Canyon, I did however all I could

in supporting their fundraising efforts. Our recent coast to coast trek was a collaborative effort meaning together, dad and I could say a joint thank you and substantially contribute towards fighting cancer, saving lives and changing the world." Fundraising efforts got off to an incredible start with an initial £3000 raised at a bucket collection at The Doncaster Racecourse St Leger day which set the bar for the next few weeks as donations for the walk started coming in thick and fast. The trek itself posed many physical and emotional challenges for the group and whilst braving the harshest of October elements, including relentless torrential rain and freezing winds, the trio faced the extra challenge of carrying their heavy food and clothing supplies for the entire distance. Ryan continued, "When I started this journey, I had the notion of pushing myself to mental and physical extremes. I felt, no matter the challenge, Weston Park Hospital's battle to fight cancer was significantly bigger." With Ryan suffering from the onset of flu and severe blisters, the magnitude of the challenge ahead was becoming apparent, but with an improvement in weather conditions and visits along the route from close family and friends, the coast of St Bees was soon in sight. In a bid to push themselves to the absolute limit, yet exhausted from the previous few days, both Ryan and Tony took the remarkable decision to tackle the third highest mountain in England- Helvellyn, as an extra to their already gruelling itinerary. Tony, who owns renowned Security Company, 1st Security Solutions, said, "Myself and Ryan climbed Helvellyn and I'm so glad we were able to complete this together. It was a real achievement for the both of us and a chance for us to overcome something spectacular, keeping in mind our ultimate goal of supporting the cancer charity." On arrival into St Bees the trio were greeted by an emotional welcome committee, who provided copious congratulations and a much needed show of support to mark the end of a truly testing 11 days.

LARGER PREMISES NOW OPEN at Niagara Road, Sheffield S6 1LU

In the days to follow, Ryan especially was blow away by the generosity and kindness of those who chose to donate and support their efforts, taking their current total to over an unbelievable £7,500. Ryan went on, "It was always my ambition to raise as much as possible for Weston Park Hospital but such a figure was never in question and it's thanks to all those who donated that we have achieved this simply unfathomable amount." "Cancer is a cruel disease and it is now the case that by 2020 as many as 1 in 2 people will be affected at some stage in their lives. All that I have and will continue to achieve in life is testament to my dad and his pure determination and fight to beat this disease. He is my inspiration and I will be forever indebted to the hospital and charity that saw the special spark in him that refuses to go out." The charity needs to raise over £1.8 million this year to enable the funding of committed and new projects that will keep patients at the forefront of cancer treatment. Throughout 2015 the charity will fund various projects to enable the continued improvement of Weston Park Hospital; including the expansion of research studies, improving the way

cancer treatments are delivered and supporting the ongoing care provisions of patients and their families affected by cancer. Fundraiser Sarah Cross said, "Since his diagnosis Tony has supported the charity through a number of means- each time pushing himself both physically and mentally to help raise funds to improve the facilities at Weston Park Hospital." "Ryan's dedication and efforts to organise the coast to coast trek is reflective of the entire family's passion and gratitude for the work of the hospital." " It's incredibly touching that a family that has suffered such heartache and turmoil continue to show their utmost support so that the charity can continue ensuring the cancer patients of the future can benefit from the same world-class treatment and care." FIRST ACTS ANNOUNCED FOR DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL 2016 by Katy Evans

Cast your mind back to the glorious (cough cough) summer of 2015. Whether you have o’h so vivid memories of getting lost in Glastonbury, wading through torrential mud at V Festival or drinking luke warm Strongbow at YNot, if your summer rocked as much as ours then you had a bloody good one indeed. The ultimate rock mecca and arguably the best alternative festival in the world, Download was well and truly up there as the summers highlight…and guess what? It’s only bloody back next year isn’t it! Download 2015. One word…rain. And by that, we mean, monsoon. Literally every single plastic poncho at this year’s event at Donnington park sold out, whilst even the fully fledged waterproof jump suits were thin on the ground. Returning for what could potentially be their very best year to date, the Download crew have announced nine acts lined up for next summer’s event, held from 10th – 12th June. With some festival favourites in the mix along with the rock stages first timers, if you have yet to experience the enigma that is Download, we strongly suggest you jump on board the most important event on the alternative calendar. So…who have we got to look forward to next June? Black Sabbath. The one and only Ozzy Osbourne is set to return to Donnington Park main stage after their mind blowing headline performance in 2012. Forming in 1968, the four piece from Birmingham have gone onto sell over 70 million records world wide, making them one of the most celebrated performers of all time. The group entered the coveted Music Hall Of Fame in 2005 (not to mention a huge list of awards which we simply do not have to space to name here) and have received copious amounts of praise from the likes of Rolling Stone magazine who Looking back at some of Rock’s definitive moments with John Webster

named Sabbath “the Beatles of heavy metal.” Having influenced the likes of Megadeth, Slipknot, Slayer and Guns ‘n’ Roses (once again to name but a few) Black Sabbath are unquestionably the god fathers of heavy metal. Amen to that. Up next and also set for main stage action at Download 2016…Iron Maiden. Ranking high on the list of the most successful rock bands of all time, the five piece have gone onto release a staggering sixteen studio albums throughout their career – their latest coming in the form of “Book Of Souls” in September 2015. As of October 2013, Iron Maiden had performed an overwhelming 2000 live shows and are returning to the main stage at Download Festival for the third time. Beating Black Sabbath to the number of records sold, it is astonishing to think that Iron Maiden have achieved over 90 million sales worldwide. A group you simply do not want to miss, Iron Maiden are a British rock institution. Who next? How about you try on Rammstein for size! Former headliners at Download 2012, Rammstein are about as brutal on stage as their music is epically powerful. Since 1994, the German rockers have sold over 45 million records throughout the world, making them Germany’s most successful band ever. Masters of pyrotechnics on stage, Rammstein have since coined the motto “other bands play, Rammstein burns!” In 2005, they were awarded an MTV European Music Award for “Best German Band” and have also been recognised with awards from the likes of Metal Hammer Magazine, The Grammys, Revolver Golden Gods and the world’s biggest selling rock publication, Kerrang Magazine. Rammstein will headline Download Festival 2016’s main stage on Friday 10th June- prepare for a once in a life time show, but please please do not stand too near the front of the stage if you’re not a fan of flame throwers. Download 2016 have also announced the mighty Motorhead to next summer’s schedule. An amazing twenty two studio albums to their name, the three piece from London are often found within top twenty lists of the best metal bands of all time. One thing is absolutely for sure however…we guarantee they will perform “Ace Of Spades” at the very end of their set…so stick around! Joining Motorhead are the uber influential Korn. This American nu-metal band from California have been on the scene for twenty two years and have performed at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals. As of 2012, the group have sold over 35 million records worldwide, naming them a pioneer within the nu-metal sub-genre. Korn will be taking to Download 2016 on Friday 10th June. Tickets are on sale now for Download Festival 2016 from 10th – 12th June. Please check out the website on www.downloadfestival.co.uk for all the details. Keep your eyes peeled on the website for further festival announcements.

Argus by Wishbone Ash One of Torquay’s finest exports, and gift to the musical world is undoubtedly progressive hard rock quartet Wishbone Ash. In 1972 they delivered their third studio album, Argus, and this absolute gem of a record emerged as the bands greatest success. Wishbone Ash were one of the first bands to use twin lead guitars, implemented by Ted Turner and Andy Powell who absolutely nail it on Argus. The lead guitarists co-wrote the bulk of the medieval themed lyrics for the album that goes from the mellow to the beautifully chaotic as the band induce total relaxation before throwing you an air guitar. Opener, Time Was is an almost 10-minute epic that starts off dreamy with delightful acoustic accompanied by hushed vocals before picking up in tempo and ending with incredible guitar solos. Martin Turner (no relation to Ted) supplies bass and vocals, and delivers an outstanding bass riff on Sometime World. Steve Upton provides the drum muscle and also penned the lyrics for the beautiful, soothing Leaf and Stream. No Easy Road is an upbeat, bouncy number, whilst the highlight of the album is the bluesy, The King Will Come, a slow burning melodic rock song with plenty of wah-wah effects and an interlude that creates a great atmosphere. Soon after Argus, the band found themselves headlining major arenas, Powell and Turner have become widely regarded as two of the greatest guitarists of all time. Their innovative style of guitar playing was often imitated but It’s debatable whether anybody ever reached their level. With bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Thin Lizzy citing Wishbone Ash as a major influence, it’s fair to say the lads from Devon made a pretty big impact in the world of rock music.

SHEFFIELD’S ORIGINAL ROCK LEGENDS RETURN Album Review by Roy Goodall NORMALLY it’s relatively easy to review a Def Leppard album as I’ve been a fan since, well let’s just say a while. I know how they work and operate, visiting these shores and knocking out product every few years as their main market place is stateside. And to be honest, I don’t blame them one bit. However, even by their standards this latest album, self-titled for the first time in their history, has been a while in coming as previous effort Sparkle Lounge, a real cracker in my opinion, was released back in 2008. I’m guessing it was also written way before that too. Anyway, not that a small contributor like myself makes much difference but I wish they’d phoned me about the album’s running order, as if. Opening song Let’s Go, so far at any rate, doesn’t do the album real justice. It just doesn’t, well, rock. However, song two, Dangerous, really is Def Leppard. What a belter, which really should’ve kicked off this fourteen song platter. If this tune isn’t played live then they want a good talking to. The Queen influenced funky, yes funky, Man Enough is good too, though again could have been paced slightly quicker. We Belong continues at a similar pace, though Rick Savage’s bass intro picks up Invincible back to danceable levels. Again, another one for the stage show I feel, along with Sea Of Love which you’d think might be quite gentile yet has riffing guitars all over it. A poster boy for bad behaviour, rants Joe Elliott on All Time High which again is

13

classic Leppard and could also have opened the album. Another fantastic track. As is Last Dance, a slower acoustic moment where the lads always excel. And so it goes on. Fourteen tunes that leave the listener in no doubt that these boys mean business, are serious about their craft, and are still playing for the long haul with the chaps putting all monies where their mouths are, investing in state of the art recording equipment and running the band like it should be run. Everyone’s on top form, both musically and vocally. Again, a Leppard trademark! With this latest effort recorded and put together by the same team, namely the band themselves and long-time helper Ronan McHugh at Joe’s Garage in Ireland, Def Leppard may be without major label support and strangely on my fan pack at any rate, no real mention of Bludgeon Riffola which I thought was their baby. After all these years Sheffield’s finest are still making great music their way. As ever, there’s elements of surprise both on the album and the way they conduct business and to be honest, so there should be.

MARK LAWRENSON IN SHEFFIELD TO LAUNCH YOUDAN TROPHY 2016 COUNTDOWN Some of football’s most famous faces are in Sheffield next week to help unveil plans for the 2016 Youdan Trophy to local businesses. The event includes a champagne reception, the inaugural screening of the Youdan Trophy documentary and plans for the 2016 competition which will see the event more than triple in size. match officials, are behind the creation of the competition which celebrates football’s first ever tournament; the Football Challenge Cup presented by Thomas Youdan Esq. which was played only once in 1867 at Bramall Lane. Keith Hackett, director of You-Are-TheRef.com, said: “The Youdan Trophy is set to fill a big void in UK football. We’re providing a professionally run competitive tournament for the youth teams of professional clubs. These happen regularly in Europe but there’s nothing of this calibre in the UK. “A key part of the event will be a celebration of Sheffield’s football heritage - something that is regularly forgotten outside of the region.” The determination to put Sheffield back at the centre of the international game is felt right across the city: Sheffield City Council, University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University are all key partners in the development of the Youdan Trophy as are Meadowhall shopping centre. The inaugural Youdan Trophy was successfully competed for by teams at U14 level from England, Scotland and Australia with Glasgow Rangers beating Charlton Athletic 3-2 in front of 1,000 spectators at the Bramall Lane final. BATTERY BREAKDOWNS Advice from the AA

Battery faults are the most common cause of breakdown. AA patrols were called to more than half a million battery breakdowns in 2010 and replaced more than 140,000 batteries. Batteries can die at any time of year but it’s more likely in winter when cold temperatures hit car batteries with a triple-whammy: • Power output drops • Ability to accept a charge drops, so the battery doesn’t recharge as quickly when you’re driving • Load increases – lights, blowers, wipers, heated seats, rear-screen heater etc are all used more Add in the fact that many cars stand unused over the Christmas holiday and it’s no surprise that the first day back to work after New Year is always one of the busiest of the year for the AA. Battery problems can be avoided The garage that services your car should check that clamps and connections to the battery are secure and free from corrosion, but there are a few simple tips you can follow to reduce the chance of your battery letting you down in the depths of winter;

Age If the battery is more than five years old and there’s any sign of it struggling to start the car, get it replaced. Some will struggle on for a bit but many won’t. It’s much better done at your convenience than as a roadside emergency. Charge If you mostly do short journeys or leave the car standing for days at a time, invest in a modern battery conditioner/intelligent charger. These can be left connected to the battery indefinitely and can prolong its life without overcharging it. Load Check that everything electrical is turned off when you park up – even an interior light, boot light, or radio left on overnight can kill a battery when it’s cold. Give the battery a chance Switch off everything electrical and dip the clutch to reduce the load on the battery when you start a cold car. Need a new battery? A mobile technician from AA Battery Assist will visit to test and replace your old battery – at a time and place convenient for you. If it turns out that your battery just needs charging then we’ll do that for free if you’re an AA Member. More information and motoring advice is available from www.theaa.com

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

Back to a commercial venue this week. Blake Hall Fishery in Staffordshire is one I’ve visited a couple of times over the past few weeks, but as time was short, it’s a lovely place, and I needed to catch fish, I headed off under leaden skies to enjoy a few hours on the bank. Once again, I set up in ‘the fifties’, an area of deeper water which I intended to target whilst sitting in the teeth of cold northerly wind. Sounds as though it shouldn’t work, but after an hour of watching the water from the warmth of the van, and this area was the only area I’d seen any real movement. It’s also ideal for the less able angler as cars can be parked immediately behind the peg whilst still leaving room to pass. I’ve taken the plunge this week and bought a couple of centrepin reels; nothing expensive, just enough to allow me to have a play and try to get the hang of them as it’s over thirty years since I last used one! I wanted to try a float rod and a leger rod to see if I could make them work. As yet, I’m still waiting for a newly released Sonik

float rod, so I had to make do with a an old float rod I’ve had for years, but the other ‘pin was firmly clamped to my ‘workhorse’ rod, the SK3 Twin Tip, and with the simple addition of a hook link and bomb, I was fishing within minutes. With the leger rod set in the rests, and the ratchet set to give a soft click if anything took line, I tackled the other rod with a 1 ½ AA crystal waggler, shotted it down until a sliver of orange tip showed, and baited the hook with a brace of gentiles. Casting wasn’t as easy as I’d recalled; like many anglers, I’d had a look at Youtube, where the ‘Wallis Cast’ and others were made to look simple by anglers who knew what they doing. As I tried to interlock my fingers within coils of thin mono, whilst trying to avoid the hooked eyes of my boots and any other potential tangle point, I realised that I was going to be fishing no more than twenty yards out whether I liked it or not! After a few attempts, I did finally get the hang of it, and was able to position my baits roughly where I intended…well, they got wet at least! The conditions were dire, and anglers around me blanked. I eventually had my first bite after four hours of steady feeding; a pinch of pellets every twenty seconds or so, then had two hours of mayhem as fish charged around the swim taking the bait before it had barely settled, then it suddenly went deathly quiet as the fish refused to feed any more. Meanwhile, no one had caught… During the day, I managed a string of carp to around 8lb, a number of decent bream, and was also able to pick off a few odd perch on the float. I have to say that using my new reels (after eventually untangling myself from my first efforts at casting) was a joy, and the sound of the ratchet spinning on the take bought back many happy childhood memories with my first ever reel. The directness of the centrepin is something to embrace, it made playing hard fighting fish a much more fun experience, and despite an odd rap across the knuckles from the reel handles, I enjoyed it immensely; you should try it, just for a change?

POOR DEFENDING COST US - REDFEARN Rotherham United boss Neil Redfearn was disappointed with his side’s performance after a 5-2 home defeat against Ipswich Town at AESSEAL New York Stadium. The Millers were stunned by first half goals from Brett Pitman, Jonathan Douglas and Daryl Murphy which saw them trail by three goals at the break. The hosts did muster a second half fightback with debutant Brandon Barker notching a very impressive first goal in Millers’ colours before Matt Derbyshire added another minutes later. However, Tractor Boys’ striker Daryl Murphy, who finished as the Championship’s top goalscorer last season, completed his hat-trick to ensure the visitors left with maximum points. “We’ve had 20 minutes to half an hour in the second half where we got a couple of goals back but the defending has been awful today,” Redfearn admitted after the game. “We’ve looked back at the goals and there’s maybe one of them which is a good finish, but the others we’ve given away which is totally unacceptable. “You can’t give sides like Ipswich Town a leg up and that’s what we did today and obviously got punished for it.” Redfearn is hoping his side can replicate the fighting spirit they showed early in the second half on a more consistent basis, but insists they need to perform for longer periods and cut out the mistakes.

“I just want the application, and people to grow up and become men and take responsibility,” Redfearn explained. “What was apparent was the battle and the fighting spirit in the second half. To only get 20 minutes of that today was very disappointing because it proves when they do play like that we are capable of scoring. “If you score two goals at home you expect to get something. To concede five is too many.” Redfearn was pleased with the contribution of new signing Barker who capped his debut with a smartly taken strike from the edge of the area. “Brandon has got ability and he did one or two great things and opened them up,” added Redfearn. “To be fair, I felt a little bit sorry for him because he was let down by one or two of the experienced players in the squad.”

MIDFIELDER REVELLING IN NEW FOUND ROLE

ROVERS SAFELY THROUGH TO ROUND TWO

James Coppinger revealed that he is enjoying a “new lease of life” under the tutelage of Darren Ferguson. The evergreen 34 year old broke the Doncaster Rovers appearance record in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Stalybridge Celtic but is far from finished. “It’s been a short period of time and to get everything across takes time but for the lads – me especially – I feel like I’ve got a new lease of life,” said Coppinger. “To play the way that he wants to play suits me down to the ground and if I can stay fit and offer something to the team and the manager’s happy with me then I’m going to really enjoy my football. “I’ve been aware of it (the record) for a while so its something that I can tick off now and get on with playing football. “It’s not the end for me and I want to continue playing.” Coppinger thanked the Rovers fans for their support over the last 12 years and marked his 469th appearance with a rapturous ovation in the 26th minute. “They’ve been brilliant. Throughout my time here, they’ve supported me, backed me,” he said. “There’s been ups and downs. When you hear the 26th minute applause, it makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and it’s something that will stay with me for a very long time. “I’m an emotional person. When I do finish, I’ll look back and I’ll appreciate it more. At the moment though, it’s about the team and taking this club forward.”

James Coppinger was the main talking point ahead of this first round FA Cup fixture as he made his 469th appearance for the club, breaking the club’s post-war record. Darren Ferguson named a strong starting eleven, making just one change from last weekend’s victory over Colchester United. New signing Felipe Mattioni made his debut for the club coming in for the injured Cameron Stewart. Rovers couldn’t have started the game any better and were ahead inside three minutes. Nathan Tyson did brilliantly to keep the ball in play down the left before firing in a low cross which was met by Williams in the box with a cool finish into the bottom corner. Conor Grant went close minutes later as he struck a shot from the edge of the area but it was well saved by Tony McMillan. Staybridge started to come into the game and enjoyed some possession going forward however Thorsten Stuckmann failed to be tested in the Rovers net. Some excellent work by Harry Middleton in midfield allowed him to play in Tyson just inside the box. Firing towards goal his shot was always rising and escaped the cross bar. Stuckmann was tested shortly before half time as Bohan Dixon struck a fierce free kick at goal from 30 yards. Taking

ENGLAND STARLET BARKER JOINS ON LOAN

Rotherham United have signed Manchester City youngster Brandon Barker on a youth loan subject to Football League, FA and Premier League ratification. The 19-year-old midfielder becomes Neil Redfearn’s second signing as boss of the Millers after a deal was struck with the Premier League heavyweights this afternoon. Barker, who has represented England at under 18 level, signed a five-year professional contract with City in August this year, after impressing with his rapid rise through the club’s Academy. “He is an exciting young player,” Redfearn told www.themillers.co.uk. “He represents a ball carrier who will go past players and make things happen. He is a goalscorer who is quite young in years but has had quite a lot of experience around the first team at Manchester City. “They think that he is going to develop into a top player so for us to get him is a massive plus. It is a great deal for us, he is what we need. He has the ability to open sides up and he can create goalsocring opportunities and he can score goals. He will be a massive addition for us.” The home dressing room at AESSEAL New York Stadium will be one that Barker recognises after he represented an England Under 18’s side at the Millers’

home in a game they won 2-1 against Germany last year. The young attacker continues to be involved in the Three Lions set up and Redfearn is excited at the prospect of harnessing his potential as he looks to make his name at the top level. “He has international recognition through the youth age groups and he will be going away next week with the England national team,” he added. “In the summer there were a lot of Championship clubs chasing his signature regarding a season long loan, so for us to get him out of City at this point is a real

coup for us. It is exciting because he fits into quite a young group with the likes of Grant Ward, Farrend Rawson and Harry Toffolo. “What we need to do is whatever system we play, we have to free him up and get him running at the opposition. Once he starts going past people, he will start creating chances. He can finish, he has been a regular goalscorer for Man City under 21s, and this is the start of us changing the face of what we look like. We want to do this, it is the consensus of the technical board, and Brandon is the start.”

a slight deflection, Stuckmann parried it behind for a corner. Rovers threatened straight from the restart as Cedric Evina played a deadly ball across the face of goal but neither Williams or Tyson were able to get that vital touch. Conor Grant caused problems for the defence again with a menacing run forwards before he was chopped down on the edge of the area. Coppinger stepped up to shoot but McMillan saved his effort. Stalybridge came close to getting an equaliser through Jack Higgins as his free header in the area was saved on the line by Stuckmann. Keshi Anderson was introduced to the game for Nathan Tyson and was involved immediately as he skipped past three defenders before being taken down in the box. Everyone in the ground was appealing for a penalty but the referee said no. With Rovers continuing to dominate in the final third, Middleton won another corner for the home side. As Conor Grant delivered the corner the ball fell to Williams six yards out on the angle, hitting the ball on the volley it beat McMillan to find the bottom corner. Rovers looked comfortable leading 2-0. It was almost three when a perfectly timed run from Anderson allowed him to dash into the box. Firing across the box trying to find Williams, it took a vital deflection off the defender going behind for a corner. After three minutes added time the referee blew for full time and Rovers were safely through to the second round of the FA Cup.

SPECIAL GUESTS VISIT THE KEEPMOAT

Cup match against Stalybridge Celtic. “We approached the group after we read the horrific story and invited the 30 members to the game yesterday as our guests,” said Murrant. “As a community club this is what we are about. If we can help turn a sour situation into one where people come here and can enjoy a game then great. We sat the group in our Family Area where they met Donny Dog and joined in the fun and games that take place on a matchday. We hope they all had a great day and come back to the Keepmoat again”. Andrew Evans said he and the children were delighted with their day out at the football, despite him not really following the sport before! “It was an amazing day,” he said. “It really helped build the moral of the group after the week we had. The staff were incredible and Donny Dog is awesome, what an amazing afternoon! Thank you so much to everyone at Doncaster Rovers.”

Doncaster Rovers had a number of special guests at the weekend’s FA Cup match On Thursday 5th November, a group of special needs children in Doncaster had to cancel their rehearsals for a theatre project after being terrified by a gang throwing fireworks in their direction. Police were called out to deal with the gang who were in the street throwing fireworks. Chief executive of the Black Cat Theatre Group, Andrew Evans, said: “It was like a war zone. I have never seen anything like this in Doncaster, and I’m born and bred here,” he said. Following the incident and hearing how some of the children couldn’t go to school the next day due to being so affected by the attack, Communications Manager Ryan Murrant contacted Andy Evans to invite the children to Rovers FA

BLADES NEWS2015/16 BLADES SAFELY THROUGH TO THE FA CUP ROUND TWO The Blades recorded a 100th FA Cup win at Bramall Lane and in the process booked a second round berth. United avoided a potential banana skin against non-league Worcester City thanks to a penalty from Jose Baxter and late goals from Conor Sammon and Kieron Freeman. Adkins made four changes for clash with the National League North outfit. Long, Freeman, CampbellRyce and Sammon all returned to starting berths at the expense of Howard, Flynn, Done and Sharp. Campbell-Ryce started on the left, with Baxter on the right. The game’s first opportunity dropped to the non-league side and Long was forced to tip over Gater’s effort from the edge of the box. It took the Blades 15 minutes to register a

chance - Baxter shooting wide - before the home side began to take control. The catalyst was the opening goal. Baxter fed Adams, who played a one-two with Sammon before being hauled down by Minihan penalty was the decision and BAXTER slammed into the bottom corner. Goalkeeper Vaughan produced a brilliant save to prevent United doubling the advantage on 23 minutes, pushing Campbell-Ryce’s shot onto the crossbar, and then Adams attempted an acrobatic effort from Baxter’s cross but the ball hit the deck and bounced over. Adams limped out of the action just after the half hour mark, whilst a spell of rain caused additional problems for both sets of players. United continued to force Worcester back with Campbell-Ryce,

who curled just over after a corner was not cleared, instrumental in a lot of the attacking intent. From a breakaway, Sammon and Baxter linked up but the former headed the latter’s cross over. The final chance of the half, however, saw Worcester go close to a leveller but Burton’s half-volley snap-shot from 25 yards was straight at Long. At the start of the second half United won a number of corners, with Collins heading a delivery from Harris wide as the rain began to fall again. The chances continued. Freeman stung the palms of Vaughan and Hammond volleyed over. Baxter was at full-stretch as he attempted to turn in Scougall’s cross but being just one behind, Worcester were a threat and on 64 minutes Burton and Dunkley

almost getting on the end of Nti’s cross. Once again, the chances continued, including three in the space of six minutes, starting with Harris curling a free-kick against the crossbar, which then hit the goalkeeper’s back and trickled out for a corner. Sammon beat his man on the left but Baxter’s subsequent shot was wide and then, from a Freeman cross, a poke by Coutts was saved by Vaughan. Worcester’s resolve, however, was finally broken on 81 minutes. The dangerous Campbell-Ryce, now operating from the right, delivered a low cross and SAMMON lost his marker to turn the ball home from close range. United concluded the game with a third, although the visitors will argue there was a suspicion of offside. From Campbell-Ryce’s slide pass, FREEMAN cut back for Scougall, whose shot was heading wide until the full-back continued his run to slot home with the final notable action.

GAFFER REFLECTS ON CUP PROGRESSION Blades boss Nigel Adkins was happy to see his side progress to the next round of the Emirates FA Cup, following Saturday’s 3-0 victory over National League North outfit Worcester City. A Jose Baxter penalty got the ball rolling for United, before goals from Conor Sammon and Kieron Freeman ensured the Blades passage to round two late on. And despite acknowledging it was very much mission accomplished at Bramall Lane, the Gaffer was quick tom praise the efforts and endeavours of the opposition. Reflecting on the win, Adkins said: “We were expected to win the game and progress to the second round and we have done so.

ANOTHER HOME TIE FOR THE BLADES The Blades have been drawn at home to the winners of Mansfield Town / Oldham Athletic in the second round of the Emirates FA Cup. Nigel Adkins’s side progressed through the first round of the competition with a 3-0

“We won the game 3-0, their goalkeeper has made four world class saves, especially the one from Jamal CampbellRyce, but our play in the build-up to the penalty was a terrific move. “I watched Salford City beat Notts County on Friday night, whilst a couple of non-league sides knocked out League One opposition on Saturday afternoon, so the beautiful of the FA Cup is always there for the underdog. “We have got a lot of respect for non-league sides and Worcester City did their Club and travelling supporters proud. They have had an excellent run to get to the first round and gave a good account of themselves at Bramall Lane. “Scoring early on helped us, but our intention was to put the game to bed sooner than we did, in the end we took a couple of chances late on, but the opposition remained resolute and deserve a lot of credit.” victory over National League North outfit Worcester City at Bramall Lane Lane on Saturday, whilst Mansfield and Oldham drew 0-0 at the weekend. Second round ties will be played across the weekend of 4th-7th December 2015. Confirmation of the date of the fixture, kick-off time and full ticket information will be announced in due course.

OWLS NEWS2015/16 OWLS UNBEATEN RUN COMES ONE CRASHING TO AN END AT THE VALLEY GAME The Owls’ run of resistance was brought to a halt by a 3-1 defeat at Charlton on Saturday. First half goals from Johnnie Jackson and Simon Makienok and a Reza Ghoochannejhad strike after the break ended the Addicks’ dismal run of recent form and inflicted a rare defeat on Wednesday. Fernando Forestieri grabbed a late consolation but the hosts were good value for the points, taking the game to the Owls from the first whistle and duly getting their reward. Makienok fired an early warning shot, heading

just wide from El Hadja Ba’s cross, before Johan Gudmundsson was stopped in his tracks by a perfectly timed Sam Hutchinson challenge. Wednesday grew into the game – with the effervescent Forestieri looking lively – and started probing at the Addicks’ defence. But the home side promptly hit back – and took the lead on 25 minutes. Gudmundsson swung an accurate corner right into the mix and the onrushing Jackson nodded powerfully home. The goal certainly gave Charlton a spark and

Gudmundsson was at the heart of the action, going close ten minutes before the interval with a half volley after swivelling on the edge of the area. Then, on 44 minutes, the Addicks did double their advantage. Good work down the left from that man Gudmundsson saw the Icelander’s feed fall perfectly for Makienok to drill into the net from close range. Wednesday needed a boost and started the second half well enough, only to be undone by Charlton’s first attack. Makienok linked up well with Morgan Fox and the latter found

Ghoochannejhad, who slammed past Keiren Westwood from six yards. The third goal might have put the contest out of Wednesday’s reach, which would certainly have been the case had Gudmonsson’s free kick gone in instead of rattling the crossbar. But the Owls persisted and made their mark on 73 minutes when Forestieri glanced in Kieran Lee’s cross from the right. The visitors then enjoyed the best of the closing stages but the damage was already done and Wednesday suffered their first reverse in 12 games.

HUTCHINSON TO SERVE TWO-GAME BAN

Blackburn. Hutchinson will be back available for selection when the Owls travel to Stoke for the Capital One Cup quarter final tie. Head coach Carlos Carvalhal said: “We don’t want to change Sam. If you have an aggressive player and you tell him to stop being aggressive, he’s not the same player. “You can’t change these kind of things. We don’t want to lose that energy he gives us in midfield. “We need that energy.”

WESTWOOD & PUDIL ON INTERNATIONAL DUTY

Zenica (8.45pm). The second leg is scheduled for Monday 16 November at The Aviva Stadium, Dublin (7.45pm). Daniel Pudil will also be in action for his country this week as the Czech Republic face Serbia and Poland. The friendlies will take place on 13 and 17 November. Czech Republic have already booked their place at Euro 2016, finishing top of group A.

Sam Hutchinson will serve a two-match ban after picking up his tenth caution of the season on Saturday at The Valley. The former Chelsea man was booked during the first half in the defeat to Charlton and will now miss the coming games against Huddersfield and

Owls goalkeeper Keiren Westwood has been included in the final Republic of Ireland squad for their crucial Euro 2016 playoff clash with BosniaHerzegovina. The tie will take place over two legs, with the first on Friday 13 November at The Stadion Bilino Polje,

TOO MANY Carlos Carvalhal said the games caught up with his players following the 3-1 defeat at Charlton in the Championship on Saturday. The Owls head into the international break having concluded a hectic schedule of league and cup football. And the head coach reflected that today was just one fixture too many: “My players played with a lot of heart today but not so much energy because we could not match what the opposites had. “But I am not unhappy

THE SHAKEY

with the players, in fact it is the opposite because they have been fantastic. “We have just had three games in a week, we have played Arsenal in the cup, and these games have all been played at high intensity. “I said before the game that we could do with the international break last week and I think we saw today that was correct.” Carvalhal also saw three players do down with injury at The Valley, all of whom will be assessed over the coming few days. He added: “Loovens had to come off with a muscle injury and it looks like Hunt and Bannan had knee problems. “But this is what can happen, this is the Championship, so let us see the extent of the injuries and we hope they will be OK for when we return after the break.”
