Performing ‘All The Hits’ from his extensive and much loved repertoire spanning decades, all the way from the Commodores to the present day. Lionel’s shows are world renowned for their party atmosphere and audiences will be able to join Lionel in singing along to classics such as ‘Hello’, ‘Easy’, ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’, ‘Say You Say Me’ and ‘All Night Long’. Lionel said: “I had such a great time in the UK this year and I can’t wait to visit new places and meet new people. Performing at Glastonbury for the first time was such a thrill for me and given me an appetite to do new things in the UK. I know these shows are going to be very spe-cial.” The UK fell back in love with Lionel last year following a tour that received glittering re-views and culminated in a phenomenal Glastonbury performance. After drawing the big-gest crowd of the weekend with over 100,000 people flocking to the Pyramid Stage, Li-onel’s album ‘The Definitive Collection’ reached Number One on the UK album charts for the first time in 23 years. Lionel went on to receive British GQ’s Icon Award adding to a celebrated career which includes four GRAMMYs, a Golden Globe and even an Oscar. Having sold over 100 million albums worldwide and Lionel shows no signs of slowing down. Tickets for the Sheffield date go on general sale at 10am on Friday 4th December.

A brass band was engaged to play in the local park. Their contract said that they could pack up and go home if there was no audience, but if just one person was watching, they would have to play their entire one-hour programme. The band began to play, the sun was shining, and there were 80 people sitting in deckchairs enjoying the music. Within ten minutes, the heavens opened, the wind gusted, and the audience ran to take shelter... all except one man. The concert continued. Rain was lashing into the faces of the musicians, their sheet music were being blown away...but one man stubbornly remained seated. At the end of the concert, the sodden conductor approached the man and said: ‘You must really love brass band music’. The man replied: ‘Not really, but I had to wait until you finished playing because it’s my job to put the deckchairs away.’ A man on his deathbed requested his wife, 3 sons, his nurse and a camera to be set up to record his final moments. Which were as follows... “To my son, David, I leave the 2 blocks of flats in the East End of London. To my other son, Michael, I leave the 4 penthouses in Chelsea, and finally to my eldest son, Kevin, I leave the big glass building near Tower Bridge.” With that he slipped away. The nurse turned to the wife and said, “I never realised your husband was so wealthy. You and your sons are very lucky.” His wife swiftly replied, “Was he hell! He was a bloody window cleaner!”

The orchestra conductor was laying into the second violin: ‘If you don’t buck up your ideas and demonstrate to me that you are worthy of being called a musician, I’ll take away your violin and your bow, give you two drumsticks, and move you to the percussion section.’ The drummer then chimed in with: ‘Yeah, and if you can’t play the drums, we’ll take away one of your sticks...and make you the conductor!’

NATIONAL ACCOLADE FOR SHEFFIELD ARCHIVES Letters from one of the most famous – or infamous – characters in this country’s history are housed right here in Sheffield’s archives. Mary Queen of Scots was locked up by her cousin Elizabeth I in Tudor times

after she abdicated the Scottish throne and fled to England in 1568. She was considered such a threat to the English throne that she was held prisoner for 19 years until her execution in 1587. But what most people don’t know is that much of her imprisonment was spent right here in Sheffield at Manor Lodge under the care of George Talbot, sixth Earl of Shrewsbury. And two of Mary Queen of Scots’ letters written during her

imprisonment in Sheffield are housed at Sheffield Archives on Shoreham Street. These are just some examples of the amazing exhibits stored at Sheffield City Council’s archives building in Shoreham Street. More than six kilometres of archives are carefully stacked inside, with thousands of documents available on online through an ongoing programme of conservation and digitisation. Other exhibits include records from the Sheffield blitz in World War II which tell the incredible story of the city’s bomb damage

and how it affected everyday life. Records of the city’s former workhouses are also on display which show what life was like for those who fell on hard times, along with archives from the city’s Victorian police force including mug shots of the city’s most well- known ne’erdo-wells. And now the archives team have been given national recognition for the work they have done to preserve these historic artefacts and make them accessible for generations to come. Councillor Sioned-Mair Richards, acting cabinet

member for neighbourhoods at Sheffield City Council, said: “The archives are brilliant. They have so much information about our past and really bring history to life. “There’s so much to discover here – more than 50,000 of boxes of material from the 13th century up to modern times, charting the history of the city. All freely available to anyone to wants to look anything up about the history of the community or their family. “We’re very lucky to have such a treasure trove here in Sheffield and it’s great that our work has

BUS CHANGES - UPDATE MONDAY LUNCH CLUB As you know, changes to the bus routes and times came into effect on 1st November. Some people have found the changes beneficial but it appears there is a groundswell of opinion against the changes. An online petition has been set up by those who want the timetable to revert to what it was. You can find the petition here: www.change.org/p/sheffield-citycouncil-reverse-the-changes-to-busesin-sheffield-from-november-2015 There are currently over 11,500 signatories. Sheffield City Council met with the Bus Partnership on Wednesday 18th November and as a result some minor changes have been made such as putting double decker buses onto some of the new routes but no major changes are planned. If you, or the people you work with, feel strongly about this you might want to sign the petition. Sheffield 50+ is approaching this debate in two ways. Firstly the Sheffield 50+ transport sub-group is monitoring the situation daily. Their most recent update states: ‘There’s been lack of transparency & accountability on who does what, and some are now trying to pass the buck -

The Regional Transport Committee next meets on 23-Nov, including Sheffield councillors, but says - don’t blame us! SYPTE has just brought in a new Executive Director who’ll have to learn fast. We now expect this to trigger a public debate in Sheffield Town Hall, either as part of the next Council meeting on 2-Dec, or a special meeting. We expect a public consultation soon on a directly-elected mayor for the City Region, part of whose task would be to bang heads together & sort out public transport. A council Scrutiny Committee has called a special meeting on 10-Dec, open to the public, to discuss the pros & cons of this Devolution Deal.’ If you or any of your contacts would like to join the 50+ transport sub-group, please contact Alan Kewley on: alan@ackewley.plus.com Secondly Sheffield 50+ member Diana Stimely has set up a group in Graves Park to campaign against the changes in Graves Park ward which is badly affected by the timetable changes. If you are interested in joining that group please contact Diana on: dstimely@btinternet.com

SHEFFIELD’S ROCK GIANTS CONQUER THE CAPITAL Review: Bring Me The Horizon, 28/11/15, Alexandria Palace London By Kt Evans The steel city is where it all began for Sheffield’s finest hard rock export Bring Me The Horizon. From performing to a handful of people in some of the cities grimiest music venues, the five piece have gone onto support the likes of Metallica on the main Reading and Leeds stage alongside totally selling out the mighty Wembley Arena. As part of their current UK tour in light of their recent album release, “That’s The Spirit,” the group well and truly smashed the back legs off Alexandria Palace in London…Yorkshire Yorkshire! Bring Me The Horizon have climbed mountains to get where they are today. Two UK top five albums under their belts alongside producing a collection of hits that will stand their ground as hardcore anthems, Sheffield should be exceptionally proud of what we have produced. Packing out the 7000 capacity venue at the magnificent Alexandria Palace, the band were once again on sky high form. Opening up their thirteen track setlist with “Doomed,” opening hit from their brand new record, it would have been an exceptionally difficult mission to source out a member of the audience who didn’t have a severe case of goose-bumps. A fitting way to begin such an emotive performance, the haunting riffs and ear splitting base perfectly set the mood for one hell of a live show. “Happy Song” followed, which had the crowd belting out Oli Sykes’s personal lyrics, proceeded by “Go To Hell For Heaven’s Sake.” A hit from the group’s top five studio album “Sempiternal” which projected the five piece into the commercial mainstream, it’s astounding to witness just how polished their material has got since April 2013. With the help of synth member Jordan Fish, Bring Me have developed into an intricately crafted, personally woven group of musicians. Also from “Sempiternal,” “The House Of Wolves” followed, which struck the audience with the urge to produce one of the biggest mosh pits we’ve seen in a healthy Looking back at some of Rock’s definitive moments with John Webster

amount of time. However, our favourite section of the bands live performance at Ally Pally came when we were all thrust into old school Bring Me material – “Chelsea Smile.” A song which resonates in the hearts and souls of fans who have supported the group from the word go, you can call us oldfashioned but really…we miss old Bring Me. We know, we know…a band has to mature and develop (try comparing “Whatever People Say I Am That’s What I’m Not” and “AM” and you’ll be in for a bit of a shock) however the gritty, fierce undertones of “Chelsea Smile” was exactly what the audience craved. We love “That’s The Spirit” don’t get us wrong, however it would have been nice to have heard more than two songs off the bands former hardcore catalogue. Up next, “Shadow Moses” which transported us right back to Leeds main stage, August 2013 when Bring Me The Horizon tore Bramham Park a new ass-hole by opening with this track. The haunting opening and chant-worthy chorus seemed to collate the audience into one big choir who were word perfect to literally every song on the bands setlist. Arguably the best track from “Sempiternal,” “Sleepwalking” followed (we could go into how amazing and thought provoking this track is, but for the purpose of space we’ll ask that you just take our word for it) with “True Friends” coming next. What is so special about a BMTH is that they create such an atmosphere within their live shows that each and every ticket holder feels like part of a community – whether you have been a supporter from day one, or have just recently starting listening to the band, Bring Me The Horizon make all who attend feel like they have just witnessed something very special indeed. They are confident, animated and sure as hell loud on stage, but they do it with inclusivity and passion for their audience…which is really bloody cool. The bands set closed with a two song encore to include “Blessed With A Curse” from album number three- “There Is a Hell Believe Me I’ve Seen It, There Is a Heaven Let’s Keep It A Secret,” alongside the first single to be released from the bands recent album, “Drown.” A killer way to close arguably one of the best performances of the year for the band, Bring Me The Horizon are absolute masters of their craft...and hell did we love it! “That’s The Spirit” is available now. Check out the bands website – www.bmthofficial.com for all the latest news, tour dates and exclusive content.

In the late sixties, during the hippie era, not everybody in America was embracing peace and love. You were unlikely to see daisy chains being made by tie-dye youths in smokey Detroit for instance. On the contrary, four leather clad rebels from Motor City were creating a sound more likely to be heard in the pits of hell, with lyrics to turn a rainbow black. Those adorable little cherubs were called The Stooges, and in 1969 they released their self-titled debut album. Frontman, James Osterberg, better known as Iggy Pop, became infamous for his unpredictable and outrageous stage antics. Brothers, Ron (guitar) and Scott Asheton (drums) with Dave Alexander on bass made up the quintessential bad-boy rock and roll band that were constantly on the edge of self-destruction. The record is an un-hinged, nihilistic offering with fuzzy guitars, simple chords and wah-wahs, on often slow-building songs that culminate in craziness. It’s the sound of decadence, even the guitars sound stolen, and its unbelievably gripping. Opener, 1969 is a future-less track about hopelessness and Iggy lets it be known that The Stooges are not happy with the way things are. Real Cool Time is the most energetic and ramshackle of the lot, with face pummelling guitars. The standout track is the timeless I Wanna Be Your Dog, one of the bands oftencovered, greatest hits. It was the start of the punk revolution, only the world wasn’t quite ready for it yet. The album, and its successor were commercial flops, but a fuse had been lit in the underground. The Stooges were a massive influence on The Clash and the Sex Pistols and their contribution to the punk rock explosion in the mid-seventies cannot be understated.

International Award-winning singer Robert Habermann speaks about being discovered by the legendary Margaret Whiting and meeting THE icon himself, before his performance at The Civic this December with His Way - The Frank Sinatra Story. In 1993, Robert was performing in London and was introduced to 50's hit singer Margaret Whiting. Later he was invited to have lunch with her and an extra special guest. Habermann explains: “Unbeknownst to me she had also invited Frank Sinatra along, who was in London at that time. He was curious to meet me as Margaret had spoken so highly of me and about my passion for The Great American Songbook. I was extremely nervous. Sinatra was my icon and the few minutes he spent with us were so precious.” Whiting then invited Habermann to go to New York to learn more about putting solo shows together. During his time in the Big Apple, Habermann was further guided by Kay Starr, won a scholarship with the Manhattan Cabaret of New York (MAC), and the award for Best International Singer for 1993/94. Habermann continues: “I then returned to London to perform shows using all the tips and advice I had had gotten from both Margaret and Kay. They both agreed that I should present a show about Sinatra to celebrate his 80th birthday. No one had ever done this before.” Robert was extremely concerned about singing Frank Sinatra’s work and so, decided to get in touch with the man himself: “Sinatra replied saying they were not 'his' songs - just his interpretations. Anyone could perform them. Then I went on to explain to Sinatra that the show would be about his life, to which he responded, ‘Anything else? If there is, I'll know!’ and he put the phone down.” Following Sinatra’s approval, Robert Habermann went on to become the first major British singer to perform an entire concert celebrating Frank Sinatra's life at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1995. 20 years later, he continues to wow audiences; telling the 'whole' unexpurgated story and singing many of Sinatra’s wonderful songs on the ‘His Way’ tour. Later in the month The Civic’s own technician Huw Williams and artist in residence Hayley Youell perform a night of live music in their own respected bands on ‘Mad Friday’. Hayley explains: “At the half-way point through my artistic residency at The Civic, I am feeling recharged and inspired. I joined Aztec Doll last year, on keys and backing vocals to record their last EP. I am now a band member.” A Seasonal Haunting features Yorkshire musicians Toxic Moth, Aztec Doll and Laura Kelly in a night that will consist of music, film projection, full light shows and of course, festive fun. And finally, The Civic brings An Evening of Folk

and Dance & A Christmas Ceilidh featuring an eclectic mix of South Yorkshire’s finest. Kicking off with Sheffield based melodeon player and singer Ollie King, followed by Keira Martin’s exploration of culture, character and personality; a one woman stand up Irish, Folk Contemporary dance and Reggae music explosion in Here Comes Trouble. After the interval, contemporary folk/acoustic duo Gilmore & Roberts, combine award-winning song writing with astounding lap-tapping guitar, fiery fiddle and their trademark harmonies. The evening will climax with the chance for all to get up and dance in a Christmas Ceilidh! Frank Sinatra: His Way is at The Civic on Friday 11 December at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12 full price and £10 concessions. An Evening of Folk and Dance & A Christmas Ceilidh is at The Civic on Saturday 12 December, 7.30pm - 11.30pm. Tickets are £12 full price and £10 concessions. A Seasonal Haunting is at The Civic on Friday 18 December at 8pm. Tickets are £9 full price and £7 concessions.

‘CAR TAX MOVE MAY HIT LOWEMISSION BUYS’ Millions of motorists would consider buying an electric or hybrid vehicle when they come to replace their current one, a new survey for the RAC suggests. But the motoring organisation says it fears many of them could ultimately be put off by alterations to Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). The RAC Report on Motoring 2015 shows that 19% of those surveyed would consider an electric or hybrid car. Among them nearly half say they would do so because of lower running costs rather than the reduced impact on the environment. But the report says changes to the car tax system announced by the Chancellor in the summer will reduce the financial benefits of driving low-emission vehicles. At the moment vehicles producing emissions of less than 100g of CO2 per kilometre are permanently exempt from VED. But from

2017 only new cars with zero emissions will be able to avoid it. David Bizley, the RAC’s chief engineer, says while the organisation welcomes the proposal to simplify the duty system, it is worried it may hamper efforts to cut CO2 emissions. He adds: “As annual running costs play a significant part in the choice of a new vehicle, the removal of any VED benefit from running ultra-low-carbon vehicles, other than a pure electric vehicle, is bound to have an effect when motorists are weighing up the options. “We accept the current VED system needs to be changed, but the Government’s plans to remove one of the financial benefits of running plug-in hybrid or extended-range electric vehicles - the fastest-growing part of the ultralow emission vehicle market - could easily put some motorists off buying them.” Under the Chancellor’s proposals drivers of lower-emission vehicles will pay VED of between £10 and £100 in the first year and then £140 a year. ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

What do you dislike about angling? There are loads of contenders when I think about it....litter, otters, cormorants and a whole host of others, but the one thing that really has me pulling my hair out is angling on the internet!!! I consider myself fairly easy going, happy to offer advice or information when asked and able to contribute a reasonably valid point in most fishy debates, but what really makes me despair is the sheer number of anglers who are quick to deny, deride or decry the angling of another who sees fit to put his thoughts in the public domain. Why is this?? What turns a fellow fishing brother (or sister) into one happy to spit bile and vitriol when in truth, they would never dare say it to the targets face, nor does it really concern them, and in many cases is completely misinformed??! Haters. So there we have it, something I’m passionate about. I hate haters more than anything else in the angling world. I see absolutely no point in taking the time and effort to post something online or elsewhere which causes only ill feeling, distaste and upset in response to another’s angling; if you don’t like it or disagree, fine, but be sensible about it and respond like an adult with an opinion to be respected. If you are one of those who delight in such foolish bravado, and obviously some do, personally I think you need to take a long hard look in the mirror.....you’ll find a chump staring back! I will name a few names here of those subjected to such drivel as examples; Danny Fairbrass for one. Love Korda and or hate them, it is undeniable that Mr. Fairbrass and team (to whom I have no connection) have probably been responsible for introducing more anglers to specimen fishing than any other company. The ‘Thinking Tackle’ programmes are enjoyed by many, the products exposed are bought by even more, so why do I constantly see online rants about Team Korda? Danny and the boys run a business, and that business needs to be making money...that’s the whole point of it, so why do others denigrate that fact? They have their marketing off to a tee; have cornered areas others can only dream of and are very good at what they do, but still the invective from some idiots? To be fair, I don’t always agree with what they preach, but I respect the fact that others do...... Matt Hayes is another; a change of direction has seen Matt do something different for which he is now pilloried in some quarters...but really, it’s got nothing to do with you! (I don’t know Matt either!) I’ve even seen derogatory comments aimed at the great John Wilson, the man who achieved the impossible when he got angling onto mainstream television all those years ago and really got people interested. A chap who thoroughly enjoys what he does and will now reap the benefits in retirement. I could go on with a number of others, but you see what I mean; the list is long and varied.....

LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

November came to an end in the County Senior League, as it has been most of the month, with wet and windy conditions. The weather aside there were 16 games played on Saturday with a huge result for Houghton Main also in midweek in the County Cup. Premier Division On Tuesday Houghton Main claimed a famous 3-1 win over Stocksbridge Park Steels of the Evostik Division One South in the S&HCFA Senior Cup 3rd Round. That was just the start though in a big week for Houghton Main. They faced Swallownest FC in a top two clash away on Saturday. Sadly for Houghton Main, they fell to a 2-1 loss, and giving up top spot to Swallownest in the process. Oughtibridge WMFC claimed a 1-0 home win over defending champions Swinton Athletic. The win is Oughtibridge’s second in seven days and gives them a four point lead over the bottom two. Bottom side Wickersley FC’s woes were compounded as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at Wickersley School to Athersley Recreation Reserves. AFC Penistone Church extended their unbeaten league run to four matches, as they held North Gawber Colliery to a 1-1 draw at Woolley Miners Welfare.

It’s not just the well known anglers though. Youngsters who post up video snippets, anglers who consistently catch decent fish and gain a discount from a small bait or tackle company to help promote their wares, even those lucky enough to catch record fish are all in the firing line. Companies who offer prizes on Facebook and Twitter to boost sales and raise awareness all get stick, with some individuals even posting blatant lies or mistruths, making allegations about products they have never even used or fisheries they have never seen.....I really cannot work out what goes through their mind when they spout such rubbish! It drives me mad! My point is this; these anglers, venues, companies and many more like them, choose to make a living from angling. They have to make decisions to pay the mortgage, foot the bills and fund life in general, which I have no issue with at all...and neither should you. If you don’t appreciate what they do, don’t use the products they sell or endorse, and if you don’t have the opportunity to fish where they fish, it certainly doesn’t give you the right to slander, libel or comment with such appalling vulgarity that we (the reasonable majority) see, and have to wonder if you are indeed in possession of any capable cognitive processes. Reasoned debate is fine, of course it is, and angling is all about opinion, but it’s the sheer number of loaded comments, unreasoned criticism, and downright condemnation that makes me despise some aspects of online angling. ALL of us are able to sort the wheat from the chaff when it comes to making decisions based on what to buy, when to go, and where to fish. ALL of us should also remember that fishing is about enjoying time on the bank, often with friends and in my case, occasionally with a piscine visitor which is what we all hope for....so for you the minority who seek to spoil the considered enjoyment of the rest of us with expletives, lies, explicitness and diatribe, I’m off fishing, perhaps you should too??

Division One Goals from Steve Ellor and Wayne McSweeney gave Denaby United a 2-0 win over Davy FC at Old Road Playing Fields. The win makes it three straight victories in November for the league leaders. Wombwell Main were able to keep themselves within four points off the lead, as they recorded a 4-2 home win over High Green Villa. Ryan Hollsworth starred for Wombwell, scoring three times. Byron House were the big winners in the big game at the bottom. They were comprehensive 9-1 winners over Millmoor Juniors Reserves, and thus leapfrogged them out of the bottom two. Sheffield Bankers’ four game unbeaten league run came to an end, as they fell to a 2-1 loss to South Kirkby Colliery at South Kirkby Miners Welfare. Ecclesfield Red Rose took all three points at Gosforth Playing fields, as they beat mid-table AFC Dronfield 4-2.

target for Brinsworth. Hot on the tail of Brinsworth are Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves, who were also victorius on Saturday, beating Sheffield Lane Top 6-2 at the Civil Service Ground. Hemsworth are just four points off the pace, with a game spare. Grimethorpe Sports continued their fine start to the season, as they made it seven wins in eight, with a 10-1 away win over Bawtry Town. Stevie Bennett scored four of those for the in-form Grimethorpe. Thomas Perrie scored twice to inspire Kiveton Park to their second win over New Bohemians in a week. Josh Sheppard was also on on target for Kiveton on Saturday, as they ran out 3-1 winners. A Luke Salisbury Hat-trick helped Houghton Main Reserves to an exciting 5-3 home win over Swallownest FC Reserves. Sam Lee and Alex Lacey were also on the score-sheet for Houghton Main. U21 Cup Group B Stocksbridge Park U21 continued their 100% start to the U21 Cup, with a 5-0 home win over South Kirkby Colliery U21 at the Look Local Stadium. Stocksbridge have scored 20 goals in three games in the U21 Cup this term, whilst only conceding once.

Division Two Greg Mason scored three times to inspire league leaders Brinsworth Whitehill to an emphatic 8-0 home win over North Gawber Colliery. Danny Camm, Scott Smedley (2), Paul Wood and Alex Green were also on

HAPPY ROVERS HOLD LEADERS TO CRAIG LOVING BOSS IS ROVERS LIFE HAPPY EXTEND RUN TO SIX UNBEATEN Rovers travelled to the Ricoh Arena looking for their fifth win in six games. It wasn’t going to be an easy ask however with Coventry sitting at the top of the League One table. It was difficult for either side to play football in horrid conditions at the Ricoh. Rovers started brightly however and the first chance fell to Nathan Tyson as Craig Alcock delivered a dangerous ball in to the back post. Rising above his defender, Tyson got his head to the ball but Charles-Cook was untroubled. The Coventry goalkeeper was called into action when a Rovers corner fell to Harry Middleton. The youngster hit a stunning shot from 30 yards which was acrobatically tipped over the bar as it was heading for the top corner. Rovers continued to pressure and in form Andy Williams caused problems from both the left and the right, but the final ball was lacking for the visitors. Darren Ferguson was forced into an early substitution as Felipe Mattioni left the field with injury and was replaced by Luke Mccullough. Coventry looked dangerous on the break and against the run of play went ahead on the half hour mark. Sam Ricketts had an initial shot blocked and as the ball fell to Adam Armstrong Rovers failed to close him down and the striker shot into the bottom corner. The hosts started to look dangerous and Armstrong continued to cause problems for the Rovers

defence. He almost got his second as he weaved his way through a number of players before shooting on goal again. This time his effort was blocked. Shortly after the striker was in again. A perfectly timed pass from John Fleck saw Armstrong one on one with Stuckmann. Fortunately for Rovers his chipped effort cleared the cross bar. It was a very entertaining second half at the Ricoh. Coventry started the brighter and almost doubled their lead as Armstrong again made a great run down the middle before feeding the ball to Murphy whose shot hit the side netting. Deservedly so, Rovers got an equaliser seven minutes into the second half. Williams made a great run down the right before using the conditions to his advantage and shooting low at goal. Charles-Cook made the save but wasn’t able to hold on to the ball and Nathan Tyson was there to poke home from three yards. The home side went ahead for the second time just minutes later. A corner fell to Fleck who tried his luck from range. Stockmann managed to get a hand to it and tip it onto the post, but his shot found a way in off the woodwork. From then the game was wide open. Rovers were appealing for handball when Tyson’s shot was blocked in the area. Andy Butler was then inches away from heading in a Craig Alcock cross. There was controversy as Charles-

Cook fumbled a simple shot and as Williams went to poke it over the line the referee blew for a foul and booked the Rovers man. It didn’t matter though as seconds later Nathan Tyson pounced on a mistake in the Coventry defence before beautifully curling the ball into the bottom corner for his second of the afternoon. Coventry pressured in the final ten minutes and it looked like they might grab a winner but it was Rovers who came the closest. On a hat-trick, Tyson picked up the ball and took a shot on the turn. As Charles-Cook was beaten, the visitors could only watch as it bounced back off the cross bar. After four minutes added time the referee blew his whistle and it was a very deserved point for the visitors and a man of the match performance from Nathan Tyson.

NEIL Redfearn claimed his first victory at the AESSEAL New York Stadium in charge of the Millers as a Jonson Clarke-Harris brace and a Lee Frecklington effort put Bristol City to the sword. Despite the visitors starting the game on fire, Clarke-Harris curled home the opener before he notched his fifth goal of the season from the spot after Kirk Broadfoot was hauled down in the box. Clarke-Harris came close to notching his hat-trick near half-time before skipper Frecklington led from the front to seal the points with a well-taken third as the Millers notched back-toback wins for the second time this season as the victory puts them just one point behind their opponents. After securing his first win at the Millers helm on his old stomping ground at Elland Road, Redfearn made two changes to his starting line-up for the visit of Steve Cotterill’s Bristol City.Experienced defender Danny Collins returned to the Millers defence in the left-back slot as Joe Mattock was ruled out because of a hamstring strain sustained in the Leeds clash. The second change was also enforced on the Millers boss as Leon Best was unavailable because of the red card he received in the White Rose derby so Danny Ward was given an opportunity to impress upfront alongside ClarkeHarris. New loan signing Luke Hyam was named on the bench just days after putting pen to paper on a loan deal

from Ipswich while there was a familiar name in the visitors’ lineup as Kieran Agard was named for the Robins in his first return to the AESSEAL New York Stadium after helping the Millers achieve backto-back promotions during his time in South Yorkshire. The visitors had the first sight of goal when Derrick Williams and Jonathan Kodija combined to great effect to split open the home rearguard and the City frontman floated a cross which saw Aden Flint attempt an acrobatic effort which lost fizz as it crashed into the turf into the grateful hands of Lee Camp. Moments later, Williams was again the provider as he skipped to the byline before playing an inviting centre which saw Kodija flash an effort which was deflected narrowly over the bar and from the resultant corner, City caught the home side napping with a short corner and Elliott Bennett worked a yard of space on his marker before drilling a low effort which had Camp nervously scurrying across goal as it hit the side netting. However, the Millers stunned the visitors, who had started brightly, as they broke the deadlock on ten minutes with their first foray of note. The visitors looked to be mounting another attack until Grant Ward was tigerish in the tackle to put the Millers on the frontfoot and there looked little danger until the ball was threaded into the right channel where Clarke-Harris teased and tormented his marker, who backtracked towards

his own box and the ex-Oldham striker made him pay as he curled a delightful left-footed effort from distance which beat the outstretched hand of Frankie Fielding as it nestled in the far corner of the net. The Millers joy almost proved shortlived as Bennett flashed a fierce effort into the side netting before Kodija’s slide-rule pass saw Agard beat the offside trap to race clear but despite only having Camp to beat, the Millers ‘keeper stood up tall to block his goalbound effort. The visitors were seemingly cutting the Millers open at will and Camp was well-stationed to snuff out Bennett’s dangerous centre before Williams almost sneaked behind Lewis Buxton at the far post but he couldn’t control his volley under pressure from the home defender. Despite City’s pressure, Rotherham almost doubled their advantage when Clarke-Harris showed his class with a cross-cum-shot with the instep of his left-boot which had Fielding anxiously backtracking towards his own goal and despite the visitors’ keeper seemingly parrying the ball to safety, referee Tim Robinson awarded a goal kick as the ball flashed narrowly wide of the target. Marlon Pack became the first to see yellow for cynically hauling down Grant Ward before the Millers had the ideal opportunity to double their lead when Buxton’s long ball into the box saw Kodija clamber over Broadfoot, who crashed into a heap in the box and the referee had no hesitation in pointing for a spot-kick and book the

Craig Alcock praised Doncaster’s efforts after matching league leaders Coventry City at the weekend. The Sheffield United loanee has been a virtual ever present under Darren Ferguson since arriving from Bramall Lane just three weeks ago. “It’s just about putting results together but since I’ve come in I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it,” said Alcock. “The lads have been positive and they’re all buying in to what the gaffer wants to achieve so hopefully we’re going in the right direction.” Rovers have lost just once in their last six games in all competitions. “No matter what game it is, it’s important that we keep this mini-run going and we try and build on it and gain confidence and use this as a springboard for the league,” said Alcock. It has been brilliant for me, its been fantastic. The lads have been different class, the fans have been brilliant and hopefully that can coincide with getting a few positive results, but the draw is something we can build on. There’s some very, very good players here and its just about getting the belief out of them and getting them to perform week in week out and hopefully the positive attitude that the gaffer’s brought in will be transferred on to the pitch.”

BACK TO BACK WINS FOR MILLERS City frontman in the process. From the resultant penalty, Clarke-Harris kept his nerve as he blasted the ball into the roof of the visitors net giving Fielding no chance. Just before the half-hour mark, Agard almost came back to haunt his former club when Luke Freeman won a tussle near the touchline before playing a dangerous centre which saw Agard nip infront of his marker to glance a header which shaved the home upright with Camp a helpless bystander. With half-time approaching, Freeman became the latest to see yellow for a late lunge on Clarke-Harris near the touchline and it almost got worse for the visitors when Joe Newell’s resulting centre was not cleared by the visitors defence and with Broadfoot looking to turn the ball home from close range, City managed to bundle the ball clear just in the nick of time. The Millers suffered a blow just prior to half-time when Stephen Kelly was forced to be withdrawn because of injury before the Millers almost ended an enthralling half with a third in stoppage time. Clarke-Harris got the better of Korey Smith to release Frecklington, who floated a delicate centre to the far stick which saw Clarke-Harris volley goalwards and a combination of a retreating defender, Fielding and maybe the upright, kept the ball out and stopped the hitman claiming the matchball.

Neil Redfearn believes his side were fully deserving of their 3-0 victory over Bristol City, which marked his first in charge of the Millers at AESSEAL New York Stadium. A double salvo from Jonson ClarkeHarris set the ball rolling for the Millers before Lee Frecklington added gloss to the scoreline to ensure back-to-back Championship wins for Redfearn’s side. The Millers took the early incentive through a spectacular finish from Clarke-Harris which Redfearn believes settled his side into the game. “I thought for 10/15 minutes at the start we looked a bit shaky, they looked really bright and they came onto us,” he admitted in the aftermath of the game. But after Jonson’s goal we really settled into it, we put the ball into good areas, and we pressed them and they always looked under pressure. In the second half, when they did have a bit of play they did have quite a bit of possession but we kept our shape really well. We broke well and we kept a high line meaning we didn’t allow any space for Luke Freeman.” The Millers recorded two victories on the bounce for the first time under the new manager who insists he will not get caught up in the euphoria. “It’s a couple of wins and it’s a long old season. I didn’t get too down when it wasn’t so good and I don’t want to get carried away now,” Redfearn explained. “I know the nature of the Championship, it’s a tough division but the signs are good. When games have nothing in them like at Leeds last week, we look mentally tough as a group. I think the presence of some experience has helped and if you look at the back four today, it was really experienced with Danny Collins at left back – and its helped it’s given us a platform.” Redfearn was also pleased with his team’s second clean sheet in as many games and was delighted to have nullified the attacking threat of a Robins’ side with plenty of attacking flair. “I know it’s a really boring thing to say, but I was more pleased with the clean sheet. Bristol City have had some good results recently, and to ‘nil them, is a good achievement. I’ve always been told that the harder you work, the luckier you get, and we deserve this clean sheet.” The Millers’ boss reserved special praise for Tottenham Hotspur loanee Grant Ward, who extended his stay with the club earlier in the week. “I thought Grant Ward was the stand out player, he has pace with and without the ball, and he can run away from players.”

BLADES NEWS2015/16 LATE GOAL DENIES BLADES WIN Saturday’s lunchtime derby was allaction and full of entertainment but United will be disappointed at conceding an injurytime equaliser. Chris Basham gave the Blades the lead, whilst goalkeeper Adam Davies was named the home side’s man of the match after a string of fine saves. Barnsley hit the woodwork twice and George Long made a tremendous penalty save before Conor Hourihane netted in the 95th minute. Chief Adkins rang the changes and amongst the five incoming was cult hero Brayford, making his first appearance of the season. The Blades fans making the trip up the M1 would have wanted a reaction and it took 30 seconds to register the first chance but Done’s effort was deflected wide from Campbell-Ryce’s cross.

Further attacking intent saw Harris whip in a free-kick on three minutes, from which Hammond headed across the box but Basham was unable to poke in at the back post. Barnsley’s first opportunity saw Watkins head wide an Isgrove cross but they went closer still on 13 minutes. A Collins slip allowed Watkins to lay inside and after Long kept out Winnall’s shot, Isgrove scuffed the rebound wide from inside the six yard box. The home side were left to rue the miss within minutes. A Harris delivery from the right saw plenty of movement in the box before BASHAM found space to head home. The skipper’s goal gave United the opportunity to settle and slow the game down, curtailing the amount of Barnsley chances. Done and

Campbell-Ryce dropped into deeper roles and the home side’s only chance in the next 20 minutes was a short Hammill free-kick but referee Swarbrick impeded White. Brayford tried his luck with right and left-foot efforts, whilst before the break another corner from Harris caused problems in a crowded penalty area before Barnsley scrambled clear. The first chances of the second period fell to the Blades. On 53 minutes, Long’s big kick caught out the home side and after Sharp beat White, Wabara was forced to slice over his own crossbar to prevent Done scoring. The boisterous Blades fans went quiet, however, on 59 minutes, after the concession of a penalty. Winnall’s pass through the defence saw Hammill nick the ball away before a

He messed up a clearance that saw a long-range Coutts shot turn into a pass to Sharp. We scored a good goal through Chris Basham and should have scored more, but it is fair to say their goalkeeper had an excellent game. George makes a terrific penalty save and when that happened you think that’s the turning point and we will hold on for the much needed victory. We were looking like getting through the game until they score a fantastic goal deep into

CRUEL FINISH stoppage-time.”Adkins made five changes following the midweek loss at Bramall Lane, including a first start of the season for John Brayford. And the Gaffer was pleased with the contribution of the fans favourite, who courageously completed the game on his first competitive action since May. But although Hourihane had the final say, Adkins was keen to praise his side, he added: “John did tremendously well to get through the 90 minutes, Neill Collins won an awful lot of headers and Matty Done worked very hard for the cause. Unfortunately we lost Jamal (Campbell-Ryce) and David Edgar to injury, but even then we looked to be seeing the game out, we won the first header, but full credit to Hourihane he reacted quickest and finished it superbly.

OWLS NEWS2015/16 JOAO ON TARGET AGAIN AS TURNAROUND PLEASES BOSS OWLS BRING BACK POINT Wednesday came from behind twice to emerge from Blackburn with a 2-2 draw. Three of the goals came in a first half that Rovers edged, with Hope Akpan and Corry Evans scoring either side of Modou Sougou for the Owls. Wednesday significantly upped the ante for the second period and finished with a flourish, with substitute Lucas Joao nodding a late equaliser to give the visitors a share of the spoils. But back at the beginning of an eventful encounter, it was the worst possible start for the Owls when Rovers struck on just four minutes. Craig Conway swung a curling corner into the mix for the advancing figure of Akpan to glance right into the centre of the goal. Former Owls loanee Ben Marshall sent a long ranger wide moments after the restart and the hosts went on to ask more of the questions as the first half unfolded. Try as they did, Wednesday struggled to make

a real impression beyond the midfield area, with the Blackburn defence largely untroubled. The same, though, was true of the Owls’ backline as something of a stalemate in terms of possession developed in driving rain at Ewood Park. But on 39 minutes, and out of nowhere, Wednesday restored parity. Atdhe Nuhiu flicked on for Kieran Lee, who slalomed his way past two defenders and goalkeeper Jason Steele only to hit the post from a tight angle. But Sougou was in the right place at the right time to stab home the rebound to draw his side level. Then, just as the Owls looked to build on that equaliser - Nuhiu struck narrowly over the crossbar - Rovers stole back into the lead a minute before the break, aided by a slice of good fortune. Conway’s corner was cleared to the edge of the area and an Evans hit was looking harmless until a wicked deflection wrong-footed Keiren

Westwood and the ball nestled into the opposite corner. Carlos Carvalhal made a double substitution at the break, introducing Joao and Gary Hooper and from the resumption, Wednesday looked a threat. Rovers survived a handball penalty shout before Fernando Forestieri drilled just wide from distance as the Owls had the bit between their teeth. Forestieri delivered an audacious cross with the outside of his boot to the far post and Tom Lees was a whisker away from a connection, then Hooper stabbed agonisingly wide from close range. But the feeling was that Wednesday would get something from the game, which rang true five minutes from time. Lee scooped a high ball towards the edge of the six-yard box and Joao climbed to head Wednesday’s second equaliser.

Carlos Carvalhal says his side might have earned all three points on another day after the Owls twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw at Blackburn. Wednesday showed grit and determination

RETURN VISIT FOR CARLOS TO STOKE

Carlos Carvalhal may not be familiar with the lion’s share of football grounds on these shores – but that is far from the case regarding the Britannia Stadium. The Owls’ head coach took his team to Stoke for the Capital One Cup quarter final clash on Tuesday, returning to a venue with which he is fully conversant. Carvalhal was in charge of Besiktas in September 2011 when the Turkish giants were drawn with Stoke at the Europa League group stage. After taking the lead, Besiktas went down 2-1, conceding a late penalty dispatched by Jonathan Walters. Two months later, though, fortunes were reversed as Carvalhal’s men ended the Potters’ unbeaten run in the competition, triumphing 3-1 in Istanbul. Besiktas went on to top Group E, with Stoke also qualifying for the next stage in second place. Reflecting on his maiden visit to the Britannia, the Wednesday chief said: “I remember a very good atmosphere at Stoke. I think they are the favourites for this game as the Premier side but we will go there and do the best that we possibly can. Our massive fans, thousands of them, will be there with us all the way and we want to make them proud.”

to merit a share of the spoils, with Modou Sougou and substitute Lucas Joao on target. Carvalhal said: “I guess I am feeling somewhere in the middle because we were losing the game on two occasions and came back to score. But I think with the new energy we showed in the second half, we certainly did not deserve to lose the game and I think in another game, we would have scored another goal to win. We can now concentrate on the Stoke game in the cup on Tuesday. We will see which players recover and assess the situation.” Carvalhal also explained his thinking in starting Joao on the bench as opposed from the first whistle. The Portuguese striker has now scored more goals than any other player in the

Championship this season as a substitute. Carvalhal said: “We have to make sure that we create the right environment for Lucas. “For example, he started against Brighton and did not have the best of games and this is normal, this can happen. But against Arsenal, the environment was absolutely correct and he started, he played well and scored. Now today against Blackburn, they play with two very big centre halves, and we knew that is not the correct environment for Lucas to start the game. So we wait for the right moment, he comes on, he plays well and he scores. This is not a problem.”
