LITTLE MIX ADD AN EXTRA SHEFFIELD DATE TO UK TOUR Due to phenomenal demand, Little Mix have announced an extra Sheffield date for their 2016 Get Weird Tour. The world’s biggest girl group will play yet another Saturday show at Sheffield Arena on 23rd April 2016 – which will be an extra special occasion as it will be the final night of their 34 date arena tour ending right here in Sheffield. Father Christmas was not in a very good frame of mind - in fact he was very depressed. That morning after breakfast, Mrs Santa had told him that her Mother was coming over to stay ‘for a few days’ and he knew that would be for several weeks, and as Christmas was approaching her visit was the last thing that he wanted. The Elves had been playing up and had gone on strike for more pay. The replacement elves Santa had put in were much slower and the number of toys that had been made was way down. Father Christmas went to visit his Reindeers and found that two of them were pregnant and another two had kicked down the fence and had disappeared into the forest. He was by now even more depressed. What I need is a drink he thought, but upon going indoors he found that the elves had hidden his Whisky and there was nothing left to drink in his drinks cabinet. Deciding upon a coffee he went into the kitchen but managed to drop the Jar of Coffee all over the ﬂoor. Now he really was cheesed off! He went to fetch the broom to sweep up the mess but found that the mice had chewed off all the bristles. At that moment there was a knock at the front door. Upon opening it, Father Christmas was confronted by a beautiful Fairy holding a lovely Christmas Tree. “Good Morning, Santa” she called “Isn’t it a really lovely day. I have bought you this beautiful tree, isn’t it lovely? Where would you like me to stick it?” And that, my friends, is why by tradition we have a Fairy sitting on top of our Christmas Trees.

Patients wish upon a star for the regions cancer hospital The dedicated charity for the regions only cancer hospital, Weston Park Hospital, is once again asking the people of the region to shine bright this festive season and donate to their Christmas Star Appeal. This Christmas Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is asking you to remember the vital work of the hospital by making a donation to their appeal, which is again being generously sponsored by Napoleons Casino and supported by the Sheffield Star. Last year’s Christmas Star Appeal raised over £37,000 and was supported by over 900 people across the Sheffield City region and this year the cancer charity are hoping for further support to enable continued funding of life-changing research, treatment and care in the hospital. Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. In recognition of all donations received in support of The Christmas Star Appeal, the cancer charity will send out a silver star decoration for people to hang on their Christmas Tree at home with a space where individuals can write their own personal message of remembrance, celebration or hope. The charity hope that come Christmas Day hundreds of people will proudly have one of

these special stars hanging on their tree. Donations to the appeal will not only help improve the environment for patients having to spend time in Weston Park Hospital over the festive period but also contribute to projects which will ultimately help transform the way cancer treatments are researched and delivered in the region. The charity needs to raise over £1.8 million this year to fund a wide range of projects that will keep Weston Park Hospital at the forefront of cancer treatment. NIGHTCLUB’S CHARITY NIGHT TO HELP THOSE WHO BEG A popular Shefﬁeld nightclub has been inspired by a city campaign to hold a charity night to help people who beg for money on the streets. Revellers going to Popworld on Carver Street on Friday, 11 December, will gain free entry before midnight in exchange for a tin of food. All tins collected on the night will be given to local charities that help the homeless and people who beg. Charity donations are also being collected

including through a rodeo reindeer for more daring guests. Popworld’s managers were inspired to run the night following a citywide campaign urging people to give to local charities as the best way to help those who beg for money on the streets. This was run by Shefﬁeld City Council in partnership with local charities, Cathedral Archer Project, Big Issue North, Turning Point, Ben’s Centre, Soup Wagon and Street Pastors, and South Yorkshire

Police. Rachel Watson, Popworld’s Manager said: “I went to an event about the begging campaign and before then, I didn’t know about all the other charities and that there are places for people to go. “We see the people who beg working in the night-time economy. I heard about some of their stories through the campaign and it really touched me. It made me feel like it could happen to anyone. I thought we should do

something to help. “We want to collect loads of food and raise loads of money on Friday night – and help spread the word that you can give money to charity and it will help people on the streets, and that there are places for them to go to. “We’re expecting a good turnout and there’s a lot going on. People love our rodeo reindeer and it’ll be a massive party.” Popworld is asking for people to bring tinned meat and ﬁsh in particular. Their sister bar – Reﬂex, on Holly Street – is also

collecting money for the local homeless charities in the run up to Christmas. Councillor Sioned-Mair Richards, acting cabinet member for neighbourhoods at Shefﬁeld City Council, said: “We’ve been working with local charities and partners to raise awareness of the best way to help those who beg for money on the streets. It’s great that Popworld is getting involved and local businesses are supporting our local charities. “I know there are lots of kind people in Shefﬁeld who want to

help people on the streets. What we’re saying is that the best way to do this is to give to the organisations that already provide help and support, so they can work directly with these people to help them turn their lives around and make a long-term difference. “I wish Popworld all the best for Friday night – it sounds like great fun.”

It’s a debatable point because the slapstick quality of their ‘The Udder room’ accommodation at their ice-cream parlour and cafe wasn’t lost on the director of the High Green Musical Theatre Group (HGMTG). So they contacted the ﬁrm’s Director Louise Holmes and hatched a plot to write in Yummy

Yorkshire references to this year’s production of Jack and the Beanstalk – including Jack’s cow which will be called Yummy. HGMTG’s Director Andy Marshall said: “Jack and the Beanstalk is a tremendous pantomime but we wanted our own local twist on it. “Yummy Yorkshire make great ice cream but we also love their sense of humour so it was entirely natural to ask them to lend us their name,” he said.

The HGMTG show will take place at The EPPiC Theatre in Well Lane, Ecclesfield, Sheffield from Monday December 14 until Saturday December 19 with tickets on sale now from the Box Office, 0114 2403839. Jack Trott will be played by Anthony Deakin and Connor Hinsley will play Dame Dusty Trott. In traditional fashion, lazy dairy farmer Jack becomes the hero of the show by climbing the beanstalk to rescue

kidnapped co-stars. High Green Musical Theatre Group has been running since 1948 and puts on an annual pantomime and summer show. The group is self-ﬁnancing, with income from ticket sales used for the day-to-day running of the society. Last year’s pantomime was Cinderella and resulted in a sell-out of ticket sales over its six day run. Yummy Yorkshire is on the A629 Ingbirchworth near Penistone.

OUR SHEFFIELD ON FILM IS THIS YOU? It’s only been available to view for six weeks. But already, “Our Sheffield” - a new film commissioned by Sheffield City Council, which showcases what Sheffielders said makes the city great - has been viewed by almost 100,000 people from across the UK and beyond. The two-and-a-half-minute film, which features everything from bee-keeping to bowling, roller derby to rock climbing, has reached more than 60,000 people on Twitter and more than 10,000 on Facebook, as well as being viewed on Youtube, on the Sheffield Newsroom website and on the websites of local news organisations including The Star and BBC Radio Sheffield. In addition, it was screened at major city events including Off The Shelf, the European Outdoor Summit, the Sheffield International Economic Commission on The Outdoor City and the MADE festival. The success of the project is all thanks to creative members of the public, who responded in their droves with a range of fantastic ideas as to what should be in the final cut of Our Sheffield and today was the icing on the cake when the film won the national award for Best Use of Video at the Comms2point0 UnAwards 2015.

Councillor Julie Dore, leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Our Sheffield captures some of the very finest things about our city, from the spectacular landscape which is perfect for outdoor pursuits, right through to major events such as Tramlines, our vibrant nightlife, and our friendly, close communities. “I am so glad that so many people have watched the film and that it has also been met with a standing ovation at a wide range of events. “I would encourage anyone who hasn’t already seen it to take a look, let us know what you think, and get involved by telling us what makes your Sheffield.” Now Our Sheffield has been released, Sheffield City Council is asking members of the public to tell us what makes “their Sheffield.” People are being encouraged to make their own short films, on something as simple as a smartphone, and send them to us to be shared across our social media channels, including the brand-new Facebook page. The Volunteer Receptionists will be responsible for welcoming and serving supporters, taking donations over the counter, fielding enquires on the main charity phone line and providing the busy fundraising team with administrative support. We need volunteers who have a welcoming and friendly attitude, a high standard of IT skills and who are willing to give their time to support our vital cause. We also need volunteers who can be reliable and are able to make a commitment to help the charity on a weekly basis. This volunteer opportunity may suit a student who is looking to gain experience working in the third sector or a retired professional with office experience. We are looking for a minimum time commitment of one day per week to cover the hours between 10.00am-3.00pm. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity very much values the support we get from volunteers. SHEFFIELD’S RUGBY DERBY AT ABBEYDALE SPORTS CLUB

and so much more! The highly anticipated local rugby derby between Sheffield RUFC and Sheffield Tigers takes place on Saturday 19th December at Sheffield RUFC’s home ground - Abbeydale Sports Club. This fixture always attracts the biggest crowd of the season and is not only a great sporting event but a great day out for all with a variety of food and drink on offer in the clubhouse and pitchside.

WIN TICKETS TO THE SALUTE TO THE 1970’S CHRISTMAS PARTY If you remember playing British Bulldog in the Scouts, Klackers in the school playground and riding your chopper when you got home.....this is the show for you. Salute to the 1970's will be performing a Christmas Special at the Killamarsh Parish room on Sat Dec 19th. Boogie Time is 7.30. With a Christmas Buffet included in the price of a ticket at £10, this has got to be one of the best value Christmas parties out there. Featuring tributes to Rod Stewart, Elton John + Kiki Dee, David Bowie, Suzi Quatro, Blondie, The Carpenters, Kate Bush and heart throbs Donny Osmond and David Cassidy not forgetting a few 70’s Christmas hits, with a Dancing Queen ﬁnish from ABBA. Plus a Saturday Night Fever Dance routine, this will be a show guaranteed to get you on your platform feet to boogie on down. Gary Birtles who is the producer of Groovy Gazza Productions, says, ‘This is my era, I remember how much fun the music was in the 70’s and the local disco’s were packed, I was a regular at Baileys, Crazy Daisies, Genevieve and the Top Rank. The bands wore the most bizarre and outlandish costumes you could ﬁnd, acts like Sweet, T Rex, David Bowie were just as famous for their costumes as their music. Who can forget the ‘Bowie Cut’? I remember going to a back street barbers in the 70’s and asking for ‘a Bowie cut’ and going home with a

lovely parted quiff. Plus most of the Christmas songs which are still heard every year, were ﬁrst recorded in the 70’s’. The company are better known locally for performing their ‘Salute to the 1940’s’ show. ‘We have been touring that show for 5 yrs now and sang in the Peace Gardens on Armed Forces and Veterans Day between 2011-2013. We are still touring the 40’s show and will be at the City Hall ballroom in Apr but we wanted to do something a little more up to date’. Says Gary. This show is now in its 2nd year and has been up and down the country in theatres and festivals. Gary says, ‘The show has actually spawned several tribute acts in their own right. Out of the show, Rod Stewart, Elton John, The Carpenters and ABBA have performed a full show independently and Lorrie Brown who performs as Kate Bush now has her own band and is touring the country as Kate in ‘The Red Shoes. Our Kate Bush Story’. Lorrie is the co producer of the show and is well known for portraying Vera Lynn in the 1940’s show, for which she won an award. ‘This is a totally different direction for me’. says Lorrie, ‘For the last 20 yrs I have been performing as Dame Vera and even got to meet her this year, but the music in the 70’s was much more about a performance as well as singing the songs’ Lorrie continues, ‘I love dressing up in

this one and I also get an opportunity to use my dance training but it is a lot harder behind the scenes. In this show we have over 40 costumes, so before the show nobody sees me as I’m usually behind a mountain of ironing’. The show features it’s own Pans People, who recreate the Saturday Night Fever routines which used to fill the 70’s dance floors in the disco’s around the country. Gary Recalls, ‘I actually went to the Constance Grant Dance school on Psalter Lane, to learn the Night Fever routine and the classes were packed with people who had never gone near a pair of ballet tights, just teenagers who wanted to be John Travolta on a Saturday Night, it certainly was a great time to be a teenager.’ So if you fancy strutting your stuff and getting your 70’s outfits out of the closet, tickets are available from Wyndham on 07449 147033. HOLIDAYS ARE COMING The Coca-Cola Christmas truck tour comes to town as the iconic ‘Holidays Are Coming’ TV advert celebrates 20 years on UK screens As excitement builds in the run up to Christmas, the Coca-Cola Christmas truck tour is underway and stopping off in the city of Sheffield on Sunday 13th December 2015. The Coca-Cola Christmas truck tour will arrive in Sheffield at midday, stationing itself in Peace Gardens, Pinstone Street until 8pm. During the visit, the people of Sheffield will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the famous vehicle and take pictures with the truck as it lights up in a winter wonderland setting, whilst listening to a live choir singing favourite festive hits. Visitors will also be able to enjoy a 150ml can of either Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Life, Coca-Cola Zero or Diet Coke. Radio presenters from Capital FM will also be broadcasting live from the stop. Alongside Sheffield, the truck is visiting 46 destinations up and down the country in the run up to Christmas. You can see the full schedule here. In addition to the scheduled stops, for the first time this year Coca-Cola has also given people the opportunity to win a personal visit from the Christmas truck and a hamper of festive treats worth

DEF LEPPARD & WHITE SNAKE SLIDE INTO THE ARENA Sheffield’s own rock legends, Def Leppard are joining forces with the mighty Whitesnake plus special guests Black Star Riders for an amazing tour that will see them tearing into Sheffield Arena next week for a sell-out show on Saturday 19th December. It’s Def Leppard’s first hometown gig since 2011 and takes place on the last Saturday before Christmas and will be their ninth show at the Arena. The show will be an epic night of rock with the first band on stage at 6.40pm. Speaking about the co-headline tour, Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott said: “I am very excited to be working with Whitesnake again; we had such a wonderful time when we did it back in 2008. It’s a great experience for rock fans to be able to see two great live bands on the same stage on the same night.” Formed in Sheffield, Def Leppard have been hailed as the UK’s greatest-ever arena rock band. They have sold over 100 million albums worldwide in a career that spans three decades and have a highly anticipated new self-titled studio album coming in late 2015. Mott by Mott the Hoople Mott The Hoople released their fourth studio album, Mott, in 1973. The quartet from Herefordshire had enjoyed a reasonable level of success since their inception in 1969 but quite often they seemed to be somewhat overlooked. Their previous album All The Young Dudes was produced by David Bowie and his influence is still evident on Mott. Frontman Ian Hunter wrote the bulk of the rock and roll band on tour themed lyrics. Along with Mick Ralphs, Peter ‘Overend’ Watts and Dale ‘Buffin’ Griffin, the band managed to create a colourful, dynamic record comprising no less than 14 instruments. Opener, All The Way From Memphis, was the lead single from the album; it’s an introspective, catchy track with a rampaging piano rhythm and features Andy Mackay on saxophone. Mackay also features on Honaloochie Boogie, a convertto-rock-and-roll anthem with the delightful lyric “I wanna tell Chuck Berry the news”. Hymn For The Dudes is an emotional slow-burner that explodes beautifully with a powerful guitar solo, whilst Whizz Kid is a hard rock track with more than just an element of Bowie-ness to it. The highlight of the album is The Ballad Of Mott The Hoople; a song with a strong Dylan influence, Hunter tells the high and low story of the band, how they almost broke up, and how “rock and roll’s a losers game”. Losers game or not, there’s no denying that this particular rock and roll band managed to create an incredibly exciting and totally absorbing album. At a time when rock music seemed to be in a state of transition, the sixties had fizzled out and punk was yet to take hold, Mott The Hoople reminded the music world what a fantastic rock and roll record sounded like.

AIR RAID SIRENS SIGNAL SHEFFIELD BLITZ COMMEMORATION World War Two air raid sirens will ring out across the city of Sheffield at 7.15pm this Saturday night (December 12th) to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Blitz. Their arrival will be pre-empted when two original 1940s searchlights are beamed into the sky from The Moor - an area of the city centre that was virtually flattened in the attacks. The air raid sirens will signal the start of dramatic ‘ring of searchlights’ that will be shone into the skies of Sheffield from key areas around The Moor/ Sheffield city centre. Members of the public are being encouraged to ‘black out’ at 7.15pm - the exact time 75 years ago the bombs started dropping in Sheffield city centre for two minutes as a mark of respect for the hundreds that were killed and wounded in the Sheffield Blitz. Doug Lightning and Joyce Spurr were too busy fighting the raging fires and co-ordinating the relief effort to realise they were a key part of an event that changed the face of Sheffield in December 1940. The two nonagenarians will be leading the commemoration events at a special Sheffield Blitz event inside The Moor Market on Saturday night. Doug Lightning, 97, is thought to be the last surviving fireman that worked on those two fateful nights - Joyce Spurr, 94, helped co-ordinate the relief effort in the aftermath of the attacks that killed and wounded 2,000 people and made nearly a tenth of the city homeless. The event will hail the start of a two-and-a-half year Heritage Lottery Fund supported project to commemorate, research and interpret the Sheffield Blitz. It will include a screening of Shirley Temple’s ‘The Blue Bird’ - the film that was playing in the nearby Central Picture House as the area was evacuated Keith Peter’s Big Band, Sheffield Blitz display, 4D Sheffield Blitz experience, re-enactors and more. Author Neil Anderson who has led the drive for the commemoration, said: “The Sheffield Blitz changed the face of the city forever and had a catastrophic effect on an entire generation. We are honoured that

both Doug Lightning and Joyce Spurr are willing to relive their experience, mark the anniversary and help us launch our project.” Sheffield Cathedral are also hosting the free ‘A Blitz Christmas’ event from 11am-3pm the same day. Tuesday, December 15th - the 75th anniversary of the second and last night of the attacks - will also see Alan Powell’s ‘Blitzed’ play performed at Sheffield Cathedral. All proceeds will be donated to the Sheffield Blitz Memorial Trust. Thanks to National Lottery players a Sheffield Blitz Memorial Trail will also be created in the coming months to commemorate the 75th anniversary of a defining moment in the city’s history with up to 16 sites around the city centre ear-marked for the installation of high quality, permanent memorial plaques. The two-and-a-half-year project will show what living through the Blitz was like and how this event shaped the city and its people. BUYING A USED CAR Car buying scams cost consumers around £3 million a year. If you’re out to buy a second-hand car, you need to keep your wits about you. There are plenty of dodgy sellers that won’t hesitate to rip you off - One in three cars on UK roads have hidden history.Many of the scams often appear alarmingly genuine – they would, as this is how the criminals will entice you. So, to help make sure you’re not caught out, we’ve put together a list of the most common car buying cons. Hopefully, they should help ensure you don’t dragged into a dodgy deal where you lose your money. The Virtual Vehicle The virtual vehicle scam involves fake websites that offer to handle and look after your money. Once you’ve expressed an interest in a motor – often located abroad – a third party will ‘handle’ the transfer of funds, releasing the cash once the vehicle turns up. You can guess the rest. ADVICE: Don’t ever hand over money to anyone or any company that you do not know. Don’t pay anything until you’ve seen the vehicle, had a clear HPI check and are happy with the arrangement. The Vehicle Match This scam works by approaching vendors and promising to find them a definite buyer for their vehicle. You’ll get cold-called with a promise that the intermediary has a buyer lined up for your car: all you need to do is pay a one-off up-front fee. It’s that simple. Only there is no buyer and you lose your money. ADVICE: Always be sceptical if you’re asked for money in advance and never give any details – credit/debit card or otherwise – out over the phone. Don’t be pressured into anything. Take a step back and think: if you suspect anything suspicious, put the phone down. The Stolen Car It’s amazing the number of secondhand buyers that don’t check fundamental aspects of a vehicle. If a designer bag didn’t have the proper label but cost hundreds of pounds, it’d set alarm bells ringing. The same is true for cars. So, ensure the chassis number is present and has not been ground away or replaced, as well as matching the V5C registration certificate to it. ADVICE: If something doesn’t tally, there’s probably a reason for it. Trust your gut instinct and walk away. Unless it’s the rarest of vehicles, there’ll be plenty more available. An HPI check can help here too, confirming if there are any ‘markers’ on the car. The Clocked Car It sounds fairly harmless but winding back a car’s mileage – known as clocking – is highly illegal. The prevalence of this scam is not helped by the ease with which modern electronic odometers can be ‘corrected’ backwards. Most cars average around 10,000 miles per year so high wear on seat squabs, tatty pedal rubbers and steering wheels, and a soggy feeling on the road are all indicators that your potential new vehicle is hiding more miles than its clocks show. ADVICE: Ask to see the full service history, if the last service was some time ago, it’s likely that the history to date has been omitted and the car travelled

more miles than the seller is advertising. Digits out of line on analogue milometers and heavy stone chips can be a sign of clocking, too. The Cloned Car Spotting a cloned car is difficult. Be wary of any vehicle being sold without a V5C – this could indicate it is using stolen number plates from an identical car that don’t match its registration certificate. Even if a V5C is present, scrutinise it carefully: many are forged. Again, an HPI check can help confirm a vehicle’s identity, cross-referencing a vehicle’s index against its chassis number. ADVICE: This is probably the hardest scam to spot, but be vigilant. If you buy a cloned car you stand to lose your vehicle AND your money when the car’s true identity is found out. Again, ask to see the service history, analysing if it tallies with the indicated age of the car. If you’re not sure, as always, walk away. If you’re in the market for a used car, make sure you follow some key steps: be vigilant – don’t always trust what the seller claims. Never give out any details or hand over any cash until you have seen the vehicle and are happy with the transaction. Finally, for a few pounds, an HPI check can confirm or quash your suspicions, potentially saving you thousands in the process.

It’s been one of those weeks where absolutely everything has gone right! To start, I’ve had a fantastic new pod sent through from R.A.D. Angling, a carbon fibre, fully adjustable, mega stylish set of bankware which I’m really looking forward to giving a full update on, and used for the first time this week. It looks the business, is rock solid, and is extremely lightweight. Check out www. radangling.co.uk or their social media pages for information. I had a session on Gawsworth Fisheries, one of my favourite venues, and banked two fish, but unfortunately lost another which I just couldn’t stop despite a 3lb test curve Sonik SK3 and Tournos 10000 reels doing there level best to turn a screaming take which eventually resulted in the fish making an unstoppable run into bankside cover. The fish went that hard, and that fast, it can only have been a very late season catfish! Happily, I managed to bank two carp, both in excellent condition, which fell to different combinations of Mainline Hybrid baits and Evolution Tackle artificial maggots. I also witnessed a couple of carp fall to an angler on the far bank which was nice as it means they are still feeding, so I may be able to winkle another one out soon! The good news kept coming with a telephone call from the Features Editor at Angler’s Mail, offering me additional work which I’ve agreed to supply. It’s another venue based series of articles, and the first one is already booked up with a friend of mine named Dru, so if you read Angler’s Mail, keep an eye out…it’s coming soon! Whilst mentioning Angler’s Mail, I was delighted to feature on the front cover too this week! It’s always nice to get a cover shot, and I was doubly pleased as I had no idea it was there until someone kindly messaged me to let me know. Whilst considering my angling for 2016, I was asking about local clubs, and out of the blue, had an invite to join a club which runs a very attractive site near me. Unbeknownst to me, the club have additional waters which are an

It may be a new month, but the weather was up to the same tricks, with wet and windy weather leading to a handful of postponements, however, 13 games did go ahead as planned. League Cup 2nd Round Grimethorpe Sports claimed the scalp of Division One outﬁt Ecclesﬁeld Red Rose 1915 in the League Cup. The game was tied 1-1 after 90 minutes, but Grimethorpe ran out 4-1 winners after extra-time, with goals from Stevie Bennett (2), Connor Howell and Bayden Lockwood. Stocksbridge Park U21, who are second in the U21 Division, booked their place in round three, with a 6-0 win over fellow U21 Division side Millmoor Juniors U21 at Grange Park. Premier Division Frecheville carried on their excellent start to the season, as they won 2-1 at home against Millmoor Juniors. Frecheville have won 10 of their opening 11 league games, and sit in second, just a point behind leaders Swallownest FC. Houghton Main were in second place prior to the weekend, but they lost that status after they held to a

added bonus, but the chance to return to a water where I won my very first angling trophy, aged twelve in 1982 (twenty two roach for eight and a quarter ounces if you must know) is just too good to pass up, and I’m looking forward to next year very much. As far as I was aware, you had to be employed by the parent company to join the club, but an associate membership has been offered. I’ve even been asked to consider a position on the committee and feel I may be able to help push the junior section if elected. I can’t wait… A few hours back on Rudyard Lake saw even more fun with ultra-light gear, and utilising a very light jig and tiny lure, I managed to tempt over forty fish and miss many more! I started off with a drop shot rig, but after a fruitless hour, I deduced that the fish were laying on the very bottom, so replaced that set up with a tiny jig which was tripped across the deck. I even stood next to another angler, one with all the kit, and outfished him around 10-1 for half an hour as he manfully stuck with his drop shot lure which was twice as big as mine…just goes to show that drop shot isn’t everything, and sometimes, you need a bit more in your locker! Eventually, I gave the gentleman a tiny jig head and similar lure, and within seconds, he was catching at an equal rate to me…great fun and a friendship forged, and so ended a great week. ROVERS IN THE HAT AFTER CONOR GRANT DISAPPOINTED WITH RESULT HAPPY TRIP TO ABBEY A second half brace from on loan midfielder Conor Grant helped see Rovers progress into the Emirates FA Cup Third round. The visitors came into the contest with just one defeat in six matches, and hoped to extend that run. Right back Mitchell Lund was the only change in Darren Ferguson’s side, following injury to Felipe Mattioni. It was the away side who had the first chance, when Andy Williams got in behind the backline but his tame effort was comfortable for goalkeeper Sam Beasant. That was the closest Rovers came to creating an opening in the first 45 minutes, other than an in swinging corner from Grant which almost caught everyone out, before hitting the post. United had plenty of chances, first Luke Berry found himself on the end of a cross but his effort hit the side netting. Soon after a mix up at the back for Rovers, Berry won a penalty after Andy Butler brought him down. The penalty was saved by Thortsten Stuckmann, before being followed up by Berry to head his side into a deserved lead. Ferguson made a change at half time and introduced Cameron Stewart in place of Nathan Tyson. It took the away side just seconds after the restart to level the match when Mitchell Lund did brilliantly down the right hand side before picking out Grant who placed his effort into the back of the net from

the edge of the area. The match opened up after Rovers equaliser, which played straight into the away sides hand, and Lund gave Rovers the lead 9 minutes later after excellent work from substitute Stewart this time, who delivered a brilliant ball across the box and the young defender was on hand to tap home his ﬁrst professional goal. Rovers doubled their lead less than a minute later; this time Grant added to his own tally with a delightful 25 yard strike that thumoed the post and arrowed into the top corner. Beasant who had barely had a save to make had picked the ball out of his net three times in 12 minutes and was on hand to deny Williams with a full length parry as the visitors looked to underline their startling recovery. Shaun Derry’s side – on his 38th birthday - fought their way back into the match, testing Stuckmann a few times. Substitute Liam Hughes twice hit the bar in the same phase of play, after Rovers got away with not clearing a free kick. Paul Keegan was introduced in the ﬁnal quarter of the match in place of James Coppinger who had earlier been booked. Despite a few late scares, Ferguson’s men held on to progress in to the FA Cup third round and keep alive hopes of a plum draw.

Conor Grant has said that his generation appreciates the history of the FA Cup. The Everton loanee is a Toffees fan and was born the year the Goodison Park outﬁt last lifted the trophy. “Obviously I didn’t see the game but I was born in ’95 when a certain team won it!” Grant said. “It’s a competition that must be taken seriously as it provides good opportunities. I love it and people will talk about the magic, but that’s right. There’s a buzz about the training ground at the moment ahead of this one.” Rovers travelled to take on League Two Cambridge United looking for a place in the third round for the seventh time in the last eight seasons and Grant was delighted to extend his loan spell, and grab a double to help send his team through. “I’m delighted; it’s going well so far. I want to help the team, keep progressing and hopefully improve as the games go by,” he said. “I went to Scotland last year and coming here is a different type of football, it’s a massive learning curve as a young lad and I need to show that I’m capable of adapting. Since I’ve been here, all of the results have mainly been positive. I know there’s a great set of lads here and we’re working hard to get resultsThey (Everton) want me to play games and play well which is my focus at the moment. I think we’ve got to take it game by game, keep winning and getting the right results because we’re a good team.”

ROTHERHAM United slipped to their ﬁrst defeat in three games as Wolverhampton Wanderers edged a tight contest by the odd goal at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. The Millers fell behind early in the game when James Henry headed home before Joe Newell notched his second goal in three games to level matters. However, Wolves skipper Danny Batth scored the decisive winner on the stroke of half-time and despite the best efforts of the Millers in the second half, Neil Redfearn’s side were unable to claim a share of the spoils. Following back-to-back victories over Leeds and Bristol City respectively, the Millers made just one change to his starting line-up as Norwich loanee Harry Toffolo was recalled in the left-back slot as Republic of Ireland international Stephen Kelly was ruled out because of a calf injury sustained against the Robins last weekend. Toffolo’s return paved the way for Danny Collins to shufﬂe back into the heart of the Rotherham rearguard alongside Kirk Broadfoot while there was a familiar face in the visitors line-up as hitman Adam Le Fondre made a welcome return to South Yorkshire following his excellent goalscoring exploits with the Millers.Following a slow opening by both sides, Wanderers stunned the home faithful when they broke

the deadlock on five minutes.There looked little danger for the Millers until Dave Edwards’ threaded pass paved the way for Jordan Graham to deliver a tantalising centre which was inch-perfect for the timely run of Henry, whose stooping header beat the outstretched hand of Lee Camp to find the bottom corner of the net. The visitors were visibly lifted by the breakthrough and moments later, Graham again combined smartly with Henry but this time, the Wolves wideman fired a tame effort straight down the throat of Camp. Lewis Buxton had to be on his toes to divert Le Fondre’s inviting centre behind in Wolves’ next attack and the Millers had Camp to thank for preventing them falling two behind from the resultant corner as Henry ghosted in unnoticed to meet Graham’s centre but the ex-Bournemouth ‘keeper pulled off a superb reflex save to prevent the West Midlanders doubling their advantage. In the Millers’ first foray of note, Toffolo’s pass saw skipper Lee Frecklington execute a deft flick which released Newell, who got on the wrong side of the visitors’ back-four, but a retreating defender was well-stationed to snuff out his cross as Jonson Clarke-Harris was sniffing with menace. Moments later, Richie Smallwood’s pass presented Newell with the opportunity to

float a delicate centre which was met by the onrushing Frecklington but his header cleared the crossbar. However, Rotherham were not to be denied as they equalised minutes later when Newell’s initial shot was blocked by Dominic Iorfa but with Wolves unable to clear the danger, Toffolo put the ball back into the danger area and with the visitors defence at sixes and sevens, Newell successfully swept the ball into the net via the inside of the post. Rotherham’s joy almost proved shortlived as Edwards sneaked around the back to fire a snap shot which stung the palms of Camp before the Welsh international fired a cross-cum-shot across the face of goal in Wolves’ next foray forward. Just before the half hour mark, the Millers came within a whisker of taking the lead when a long freekick into the box saw Broadfoot rise highest and although his header failed to find a Millers shirt, the ball was only half-cleared into the path of Frecklington, who showed great technique to fire an effort from outside the box which had Carl Ikeme nervously scrambling across goal as it shaved the visitors upright, possibly with the aid of a slight deflection. Minutes later, Grant Ward showed fleet of foot to work a shooting position as he fired a rasping effort from distance which

The Millers pressed for an equaliser in the second half and enjoyed spells were unable to breakdown a stubborn Wolves’ defence. After the game boss Redfearn praised his side’s work rate and endeavour but admitted the Millers just lacked quality at vital times during the game. “I thought we were the better side to be honest and if you look at the 90 minutes and the weight of possession and territory particularly in then second half, but the difference was quality,” Redfearn admitted after the game. If you look at the goals they are poor from our point of view. When they went forward they looked dangerous, and I thought we just looked a little short up front today. I thought we started nervous and they sensed it, and they got the goal. Then they sat back. I thought that we came on to them, we equalised they wobbled a bit. It looked like we were going to go on and put them to task. The second goal, the marking is poor. The goal is disappointing but you have to keep going, we have to dust ourselves off, I’ve said to the lads even if we had won today we would still have had to go Blackburn and got something. Results have gone for us

today, and there is nothing in it.” In a close encounter played in blustery conditions, both sides were restricted to mainly half chances, with Redfearn left frustrated that his side couldn’t force a second goal. “In the second half we came out and were the better side again but we just cannot put the ball in the net,” he concluded. “We had one or two half chances with things ﬂashing across goal, and there is one when Grant Ward breaks down the right and Clarke-Harris should score. If we get something on the end of it then it’s a goal, it is that close in.” Redfearn will be hoping that the return of key players from injury and suspension will help boost his options ahead of a busy run of ﬁxtures, whilst the club awaits the prognosis of the injury to Danny Ward who was withdrawn due to injury. “We had a lot of people out today, we had Leon Best out, Stephen Kelly out, and Mattock is just coming back from a hamstring,” Redfearn continued. “We have got a lot of people who are missing who are important and then Danny Ward goes off after 20 minutes which obviously doesn’t help us. If you look at Wolves they are a big club that should be challenging at the other end and I thought that we ran them close enough, but we lacked the quality. I think that the effort and the determination was there, and there was nothing in the game, in fact we probably shaded it, but they had the quality when they needed it.”

Just before the hour mark, Kevin McDonald’s clipped centre had the Millers defence in a spin and after Camp failed to clear decisively, Toffolo had to hack the ball clear from near his own

line. Ipswich loanee Luke Hyam was introduced into the fray and he almost made an instant impact when his lay-off saw Toffolo and Derbyshire combine to great effect paving the way for the Norwich left-back to pull the ball back into the path of Grant Ward, who ﬂuffed his lines as he blazed his effort into the stand behind the goal. Moments later, Ward turned architect when he exchanged passes with Hyam before delivering a dipping centre which looked inch-perfect for the run of Clarke-Harris but the inform striker was agonisingly inches away from turning the ball home. With quarter an hour to go, Ward skipped to the touchline to ﬂash a superb centre which again narrowly evaded the attentions of Clarke-Harris before Hyam’s chip over the top nearly fell kindly for Derbyshire, who would have been through on goal if he managed to put the ball under his spell. With time running out for the hosts, McDonald saw yellow for a wild tackle before Frecklington curled a long-range effort over the bar from distance in Rotherham’s last effort of note.

BLADES NEWS2015/16 BLADES IN THIRD ROUND HAT Matt Done’s secondhalf goal proved enough to be enough as the Blades progressed to the third round of the Emirates FA Cup with a hard fought win over Oldham Athletic at Bramall Lane. Done’s strike in the opening minutes of the second period means United are safely in the hat for Monday’s draw which sees teams from the Championship and top-ﬂight enter the fray, despite ﬁnishing the game with ten men following a red card for Che Adams. For Saturday’s third round clash against the Latics, boss Adkins made two changes from the starting XI which drew at Barnsley, with Adams and McEveley replacing the injured duo of Campbell-Ryce and Edgar. Inside the opening minute, United came close to opening the scoring. Brian

Wilson got in a tangle on the edge of the box and after Cornell saved Done’s initial shot, James Wilson blocked Adams’s goal bound effort on the rebound. At the other end, Oldham came even closer to breaking the deadlock in the 14th minute. After Hammond had fouled Winchester on the right-wing, Philliskirk hit the post from Brian Wilson’s low set-piece. In blustery conditions both sides found it difﬁcult to ﬁnd any real momentum, although for the Blades, Adams and Done looked a live threat. Meanwhile, Long was commanding when called upon. Before the break, United survived a scare. Jones’s corner from the right saw Philliskirk challenge Long and from the clearance a number of Blades bodies threw themselves in the way

of Yeates’s volley. With the first-half drawing to a close, Harris required lengthy treatment following a clash from the aforementioned corner and was stretchered from the field of play. Four minutes added time were signalled as Kieran Wallace took the place of Harris at left-back. United made a second change at the break with Scougall replacing Sharp, as Oldham got the second-half underway with the home side attacking the Kop end. Inside two minutes United were in front. Collins advanced before feeding DONE, who twisted and turned before getting the better of James Wilson and slotting past the outstretched leg of Cornell. On the hour Oldham had their first opportunity of the second period. A hopeful ball in from the

right by Kelly wasn’t claimed by Long, but the United goalkeeper made amends blocking Jones on the follow up. With 25 minutes remaining, United were reduced to ten men as referee Ilderton brandished a straight red card to Adams following a clash with Oldham skipper Kelly. And the visitors wasted an instant chance to restore parity as Winchester headed over from a free-kick from the right. United were now on the back foot and Cassidy should have scored in the 75th minute, heading over from Mills’s left-wing cross with the goal at his mercy. Sammon replaced Done with ﬁve minutes remaining, before Brayford came within a whisker of a goal, hitting the underside of the crossbar with a dipping left footed volley. At

the other end, Long was United’s saviour, coming quickly off his line to deny the advancing Poleon. As four minutes added time were signalled. Hammond produced a timely intervention,

before Long punched clear under heavy pressure on his line. Oldham’s last effort saw James Wilson ﬁre over from long-range as United held on for a place in the third round.

JOB WELL DONE Nigel Adkins declared Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup victory over Oldham Athletic at Bramall Lane as a job well done. In difﬁcult blustery conditions, Matt Done’s early secondhalf strike proved enough to beat David Dunn’s Latics despite the Blades playing the ﬁnal 23 minutes with ten-men following the dismissal of Che Adams. But Adkins was keen to focus on the positives after the game and said with the aid of goal line technology his side would have won the game by a greater margin, despite their numerical disadvantage. He commented: “We are through to the third round, we kept a good clean sheet and George Long was commanding in goal. After the red card, we showed good resilience as a team to see the game though, having scored an excellent goal. We should have won by two goals really, the ball from John Brayford’s thunderbolt of a shot is clearly over

the line, but it wasn’t given.” Stefan Scougall replaced Billy Sharp at the interval and the Gaffer was more than happy with how his tactical switched worked. The Blades boss continued: “We needed to change things to make something happen because there was very little in the ﬁrst-half and thankfully the diamond shape we adopted worked a treat. What was really pleasing was the way we managed the game though, our aim was to progress to the next round and we are in the hat for Monday’s draw.” One major worry from the game though is the condition of defender Bob Harris, who was taken straight to hospital having being stretchered from the ﬁeld of play on the stroke of half-time. Adkins concluded: “Bob will get the best possible care in hospital and we will await his diagnosis before we comment further.”
