THIS WEEK In the News 16/12/1431

My mate just showed me his new wind turbine. I was blown away.

17/12/1718 18/12/1958

My wife accused me of being immature. I told her to get out of my fort.

19/12/1154 20/12/2007

Women only call be ugly until they find out how much money I have. The they call me ugly and poor. What do you call a dog with no legs? It doesn’t matter it’s not going to come. What’s green, fuzzy has four legs and if it fell out of a tree would kill you? A Pool Table. I went to an emotional wedding the other day. Even the cake was in tiers. I was going to start taking self defence lessons but I decided on algebra instead. I’m a firm believer there’s safety in numbers. I ordered a two seater sofa from dfs which was 50% off. Turned out to be a bloody armchair! When I was a boy, my friends said quoting songs would get me nowhere. Well Take A Look At Me Now. “False information” spelled backwards is “False information”. “Your dog has been barking for the last 3 hours!” I said to my neighbour this morning, “I’ve got a serious hangover and I’m trying to get some sleep!” “It would probably help if you got out of his kennel.” she replied. A Scotsman has just offered me a box of silverware and some Wrigley’s spearmint. I said “I’ll take your knives but I’ll never take your free gum.”

21/12/1910 22/12/1965

Henry VI of England is crowned King of France at Notre Dame in Paris. Great Britain declares war on Spain. Project SCORE, the world’s first communications satellite, is launched. Henry II is crowned at Westminster Abbey. Elizabeth II becomes the oldest ever monarch of the United Kingdom, surpassing Queen Victoria, who lived for 81 years, 7 months and 29 days. An underground explosion at the Hulton Bank Colliery No. 3 Pit in Over Hulton, Westhoughton, England, kills 344 miners. A 70 mph speed limit is applied to all rural roads including motorways for the first time. Previously, there had been no speed limit.

TENANTS ENCOURAGED TO PUT THEIR RENT FIRST THIS CHRISTMAS Sheffield City Council tenants are being urged to put their rent first this Christmas and take advantage of the two rent-free weeks to clear or reduce any arrears. All tenants with a clear rent account or who have signed up to a repayment agreement by 1 January will be entered into a free prize draw with

a chance of winning two prizes of £250 shopping vouchers. The prize draw is part of a campaign which highlights the need for customers in rent arrears to keep up with payments during the rentfree weeks which run from Monday 21 December. Tenants failing to pay their rent risk losing their homes,

so the council is encouraging people to make paying their rent a priority in the lead up to Christmas. Cllr Jayne Dunn, cabinet member for housing at Sheffield City Council, said: “We all know that there is a lot of pressure to spend money at Christmas and this can be really hard. “But it’s important that

people in rent arrears continue to pay during the rent-free weeks so they can try and catch up on rent, to make sure their home is safe. “We’ll do everything we can to try and help, and I’d urge anyone who is struggling to pay to contact us on 0114 293 0000.” Every tenant in arrears will be contacted with details of the prize draw

to help them make realistic and affordable payment arrangements. “However, we will move swiftly to recover rent from those who can afford to pay and do not, and ultimately they risk losing their home.” Customers who meet the criteria for the prize draw will be automatically entered.

and reminded to continue to make payments. People in financial difficulty are encouraged to get in touch with the council to discuss a realistic payment plan. Paul Grayson, manager of the Income Management Unit at Sheffield City Council, added: “Our staff are available to give advice and assistance to tenants who are struggling with rent,

Celebrate & Worship at Advent Advent is a season observed as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. The term is a version of the Latin word meaning "coming". Churches throughout the region will be hosting a variety of special services, masses and celebrations throughout the advent period, welcoming both regular parishioners as well as new attendees, all are welcome. If you are looking for a traditional carol service, Christmas worship or somewhere to connect with the local community over the advent period there will be events within your local parish or alternatively you can attend the events listed within this feature.

DO YOU REMEMBER 1966? DEVOLUTION Were you in Sheffield in 1966? It was the year that England won the world cup and the height of the swinging sixties. Scary to think that next year it was 50 years ago! Did you go out clubbing in the 1960’s and did you go to Stringfellows nightclub or the King Mojo? Were you a single woman who remembers the new freedom offered by the contraceptive pill? Did you know that Sheffield was the first place outside London where there was a clinic that didn’t judge whether a woman was married or not before they offered her contraceptive advice? The clinic was on Ecclesall Road.

Sheffield 50+ has been contacted by the BBC looking for people who remember those times and are happy to be interviewed for a film about it. They are particularly looking for people who enjoyed going to nightclubs in 1966 and for people who were single women in 1966 who went to that clinic or who took the pill. If you are one of those people, please get in touch. Even if you don’t want to be filmed, you might have memories that will help with making the film. Contact the Sheffield 50+ office on bridget@sheffield50plus.org.uk or call 0114 253 6736

OUR NEW WORLD BOOK WEBSITE NIGHT

The Sheffield 50+ website has been redesigned and it is a brilliant resource for anyone aged 50+ in Sheffield. What’s different about this website is its done by us and for us so it includes what people aged over 50 really want to know or to talk about. There are events listings, and you can even add your own event to publicise it as widely as possible, there is lots of useful information – if we don’t know the answer we point you to a site that does – and there are blogs and news items too. The website is quite new and we are adding new information all the time so keep going back to check up for new items. And if you want to see anything on the website that isn’t there yet, just let us know.

50+ OPENING

The Sheffield 50+ office will be closed from 1pm on 24th December – 9am on Tuesday 5th January. We wish everyone a Very Happy Christmas and a Sensational New Year! Please note. From January there will be new opening hours for the Sheffield 50+ office. Our new hours will be Tuesday – Thursday each week from 9am – 5pm. The office may be open occasionally on Mondays and Fridays but this will be not be on a regular basis. You can always leave a message on our answer phone and we will pick it up when the office is next open.

World Book Night is an annual event where free books are given out to those who have never discovered the joy of reading or maybe have just got out of the habit. Earlier this year Sheffield 50+ took part and we gave away over 30 books. In 2016 World Book Night is in April and we plan to do it again; we’re looking for people who might like to receive a book so they can discover, or rediscover, the joy of reading. There will be 20 titles to choose from, ranging from thrillers, to romance to poetry. Sheffield 50+ will be able to choose just two titles so let us know what kind of book you’d like to read so that we can choose the most popular. You can contact us to register your name at admin@sheffield50plus.org.uk , by calling 0114 253 6736 or by post to Sheffield 50+, The Circle, Rockingham Lane, Sheffield S1 4FW.

Members of:

Sheffield City Council has agreed a deal with the Chancellor George Osbourne for the city to take more control over its own finances. The deal could see up to an extra £900m coming into the city to enable us to take more control over transport, youth education and training, skills, but not housing or 16-18 education. Nor older people although transport is something very important to us. The details will have to be thrashed out and it isn’t new money – it’s simply that Sheffield will have that pot of money to spend as it sees fit rather than the government making those spending decisions. One issue that seems to be causing a bit of a stir is that we could also have an elected Mayor as part of the deal, even though Sheffield voted against having a Mayor a few years ago. The Council met last week to discuss the proposals and several Sheffield 50+ members were there as observers. We’ll continue to keep a eye on this and let you know what is happening.

50+ MEETING The next Sheffield 50+ members’ meeting is on Thursday 7th January at the Quaker meeting house, St James Street, Sheffield. It starts at 1.15pm. The speaker is Ruby Smith from South Yorkshire Housing Association on Over2You. Over2You aims to give people a louder voice on the ongoing issues of health and care quality.

RICK’S NOT GIVEN YOU UP ANDRE RIEU WALTZES Pop Icon and multi-million selling artist Rick Astley has announced a further six dates to his March and April UK tour for 2016, due to demand after his original run of shows sold out immediately. Rick Astley is a talent whose career has spanned over 28 years. Rick Astley has sold in excess of 19 million records and has a string of 8 consecutive top 10s under-his-belt. His amazing career began in 1987. Aged just 21, people were shocked by the powerful, mature soulful tone to his voice and the UK sent his debut single “Never Gonna Give You Up” to the top of the charts within 2 weeks of its release. The rest of the world soon followed suit with “Never Gonna Give You Up” reaching Number 1 in 16 other countries including most of Europe, Japan, United States and Australia. The following 2 years saw Rick continue to dominate the charts around the globe. In the UK, Rick was in the Top 40 every week for the first 6 months of his career. It was Britain’s largest selling single of that year. The album “Whenever You Need Somebody” entered the UK album charts at Number 1 and sold over 15.2 million copies worldwide, making him the top selling British act of the year. It was a similar success story in the USA, as Rick became one of the few British artists to crack their market. Rick’s American success was reinforced witha second

Number 1 single, “Together Forever”. “It Would Take a Strong Strong Man” became another Top 10 single and the album also reached a position within the Top 10, selling close to 2 million copies. Shortly after this, Rick decided to leave the music business….only to surprise his British fans 13 years later, with an 8-date tour in 2004. He performed ‘classic’ songs from past decades, including Sinatra, Bacharach and The Carpenters, as well as a few from his own musical resume. More dates soon followed. Since then, Rick has re-discovered his love for playing live, gradually increasing his international gigs and he continues to tour all over the world. As well as a

sell-out UK tour in 2012, Rick opened up for Peter Kay’s record breaking ‘The Tour That Does Tour –Tour’ and has performed at numerous large outdoor events and festivals every summer. This will be Rick’s first major UK headline tour in four years and also marks the first time he has appeared in many of the venues. The tour will also see him perform tracks from forthcoming new album due for release next year. Tickets for Rick Astley at Sheffield City Hall are available online at www. sheffieldcityhall.co.uk, over the phone on 0114 2 789 789 and in person at the Sheffield City Hall Box Office.

NOW I’M A BELIEBER Preview: Justin Bieber, 26/10/16, Motorpoint Arena By Kt Evans

Since when did Justin Bieber get so friggin’ cool? Long gone are the days when he was the most hated celeb on the planet, with shameless stories and embarrassing criminal snap shots plastered across gossip magazines worldwide. The Biebz has quite literally gone from zero…to hero. And we’ve got some exceptionally exciting news as it has been announced that the star will be bringing his world tour to Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena on 26th October 2016. Hallelujah! What has Justin Bieber done to make himself so Goddamn cool? We can think of a handful of answers, but this question has been puzzling sceptics for months. Firstly, his collaboration with Diplo and Skrillex on the track “Where Are You Now,” which absolutely smashed its way into the international music scene. Released in February 2015, the single was certified 2X platinum in the US, shipping more than 2 million copies, alongside smashing its way into the top 5 singles chart positions in the UK charts. With over 500 million views on youtube and making up part of Justin Biebers triumphant 2015 return, the single appears on Biebz’ brand new album “Purpose.” Secondly, Justin Bieber has got pretty damn awesome at writing songs. His third single to be released from “Purpose,” “Sorry” was once again a huge success throughout the world. It peaked at number two on the Canadian Hot 100 chart along with topping charts in eight countries and peaking within the top ten of the charts in nineteen countries including Australia, Germany and the United States. Having being described by critics as “the cold fusion of pop songs, a track that will keep its listeners moving in sonic ecstasy long after the sun goes cold,” Consequence of Sound publication were also quick jump on the glowing reviews stating that “the results are beyond promising. It’s a chill number marked by warm island rhythms.” If you have yet to watch the dance video for “Sorry” on youtube, we strongly suggest you do so now…right now…it’s a cracker and a half!

Biebz’ status has drastically improved largely due to yet another reason…James Cordon. The British comedian / US talk show host collaborated with Biebz on his hugely successful “Carpool Karaoke” which has ranked up over 1 billion hits on youtube since October 2015. Proving that actually, he can take the mikey out of himself, the star showed his humble side throughout the twelve minute clip of pure hilariousness. Speaking of which…have you had the chance to watch Justin Bieber’s roast?! Here we see the likes of Will Ferral, Kevin Hart, Ludicras, Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart rip the absolute piss out of the twenty year old which he takes surprisingly well…although how he didn’t throw a colossal hissy fit at Natasha Leggers down right vile comment about his family we literally will never ever know! Credit must be dished to Justin who took the roast like a man and didn’t waver throughout the hour long session. Justin Bieber has recently announced that he shall be bringing his worldwide tour to the one and only Motorpoint arena on 26th October 2016. We have a strong suspicion tickets are going to fly off the shelf with sonic speed, therefore if you want to attend arguably one of the most anticipated shows of 2016…you must remember that tickets go on sale on 17th December 2015! Along with performing in Sheffield, Biebz also has tour dates in Manchester on 20th October, Birmingham on 18th October, Glasgow on 27th October and two dates at London’s O2 from 11th and 12th October 2016. Tickets are available through a variety of platforms, however we suggest check out Biebz official website – www.justinbiebermusic.com for all the official updates and ticket outlets.

Having at long last produced their latest work to rave reviews I awaited with baited breath to see how much of this new platter would feature in the live Def Leppard experience. Like many established artists they do have a back catalogue of hits and normally feel duty bound to play them in the live arena, but for my money their best work has been in more recent times. Anyway, opener Let’s Go, track one and not the best song by far off their new self- titled album, got the ball rolling as the band seemed to be firing away as normal with Animal, Undefeated and Dangerous, another from the latest long-player following suit. Frontman Joe Elliott really knows how to engage and connect with the audience with he does with ease. He speaks to us, although he did swear more than normal and seems totally genuine to receive the welcome that they got. Rick Savage and Vivian Campbell are natural players and Rick Allen never puts a foot wrong. Phil Collen, who surely must be one of rocks healthiest players, never slowed down either. The lighting and stage set up was first class as it normally is, which really does transcend well into a huge colourful production that befits their status within the modern world of rock. With time moving on we got the regular hits, the David Essex cover Rock On, plus Joe unusually doing Two Steps Behind on his own complete with top hat and white leather jacket. With Pour Some Sugar it was soon time to hit the road though they did soon return for Rock Of Ages and Photograph. There were some disappointments. I’d have liked to have seen less of the screaming co-headliners and more tunes off their latest album Def Leppard, which is stunning. Oh, and maybe less between song banter. Over the years Sheffield has produced some magical musical exports with Def Leppard still very high on the list. They’re still making great music as the new album testifies. You really should buy it. If you’ve heard the rumours, read the words and still haven’t joined the club yet, Def Leppard have style and panache by the bucket load and really do know how to put on a proper show, even though you’ll always get me banging on about just a smattering more of current music. That aside, the boys are back! Def Leppard play Sheffield Arena this Saturday (19th December).

Looking back at some of Rock’s definitive moments with John Webster

Fifth Dimension – The Byrds In 1966, The Byrds recorded one of the very first psychedelic rock albums; Fifth Dimension. The folk rockers from Los Angeles couldn’t even play electric instruments when the British music invasion shook up the United States. They soon got their act together. On Fifth Dimension The Byrds blend charming folk with trippy psychedelia to create an intoxicating record that led the way for others to follow. It was the band’s first album not to include songs penned by Bob Dylan. That, combined with the untimely departure of chief songwriter Gene Clark, before the making of the record, seemed to have stripped the band of its creativity. The remaining four Byrds pulled together with frontman Roger McGuinn, rhythm guitarist David Crosby and drummer Michael Clarke taking over the song-writing duties. Before Gene Clark’s departure, the band recorded one of their greatest hits, Eight Miles High, the lead single from the album, and widely regarded as the first ever full-on psychedelic rock song. Partly inspired by the Indian classical music of Ravi Shankar, the song begins in ramshackle style, before the infectious rhythm, jangly guitar and soaring harmonies take over. Clark’s lyrics were alleged to promote the use of recreational drugs and the song was subsequently banned from many US radio stations. McGuinn’s 12 string guitar playing is superb throughout the record, and he delivers a great solo on the jazzy, I See You. Another highlight on the album is the quirky and catchy, Mr Spaceman, a song which the band hoped might be heard by aliens over the radio waves! For a short time, The Byrds were considered to be America’s answer to The Beatles. The band didn’t quite reach that level of commercial success but are still regarded as one of the most influential bands of the sixties.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I have to give credit to an angler called Ashley Pulley this week. Ashley agreed to be nominated as a ‘venue expert’ for a forthcoming feature, and made it look easy as he caught for the camera. By agreeing to be the subject of this upcoming piece, Ashley has dipped a toe in the murky world of angling journalism and exposed himself to a fair bit of banter from mates, and also the possibility of jealousy from others who couldn’t possibly fill his boots on this one… so I’m very grateful. A local fishery where Ashley fishes regularly was selected, he was briefed that the subject would be winter carp, and all he had to do was catch within a very short timeframe! For my part, I compiled a storyboard of points and photographs, confirmed the date, and turned up camera in hand hoping that Ashley was on form. He was. As I walked across the short space from the car park, Ashley informed me that in the hour he had been there waiting, he’d already bagged two carp, both of which were ready to be photographed! Great start! Throughout the session, my venue expert demonstrated his rigs, explained why he selected this particular area of the lake, and discussed baiting strategies at length, whilst continuing to catch winter carp when others around us were staring at motionless indicators. A fine demonstration of an understated angler doing his thing, and we completed an article in super quick time which will hopefully feature in a mainstream weekly publication very soon. Ashley, it was an absolute pleasure to meet you, and now I’ve got another one to plan next week, at a different venue, with a different ‘expert’, so I hope it’s as easy! Elsewhere this week, I’ve had an hour or two exploring the myriad of local canal stretches which are quite often neglected by anglers. I have no idea why these waters are so often ignored as they may throw up a surprise with some simply stunning fish, so I set out to use tiny jigs and lures in a confined length at the very end of a network of small canals in Staffordshire. As always, a little bit of research beforehand had revealed that years ago, the stretch had held some decent perch, so it was out with the gear and then trudge off in the rain to find out if they were still there…

LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

After threatening it for the last few weeks, the heavens opened and almost completely cancelled the weekend’s fixture list. Just one league game survived, and barely a handful of County cup games. In the weekend’s sole league game, Brinsworth Whitehill beat Bawtry Town 8-0 at the Pheonix Sports Club. Greg Mason (3), Scott Smedley (2), Aaron Hatfield, Matt Blakemore and Brad Davies were all on score-sheet for the in-form Brinsworth. The win takes Brinsworth six points clear of their nearest rivals Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves and guarantees them top spot going into the short winter break. S&HCFA Cups New Bohemians of Division Two shocked Division One side AFC Dronfield, beating them 3-2 at the SHU Sports Ground to reach the 3rd Round of the Association Cup. In another all County Senior League tie, Penistone Church beat South Kirkby Colliery 7-2 at the South Kirkby Colliery Miners Welfare Ground. Sheffield Bankers join them New Bohemians in the next round, after they beat Harworth Colliery Reserves 3-1 at Hillsborough College. On Tuesday night, North Gawber Colliery’s S&HCFA

The main canal itself seemed entirely devoid of anything remotely piscine; an hour of dropping micro lures into a variety of holes and under overhanging undergrowth revealed nothing at all, so it was off to a mooring spot to try one last throw of the dice. I’ve found that flicking a jig away from me and twitching it back often brings better results than dropshotting, especially when the water has a little colour in it, so my pink (favourite colour) Grassminnow SS was deftly lobbed against a retaining wall and left to sink as I watched the braid to deduce when it had hit the bottom. Seconds later, a savage twitch saw the rod tip flash over, and a fish raced off with the lure tightly clamped; hopefully, a big perch? Sadly not; but a nicely rounded fish of around 1lb graced the bank which was gratefully received, and a few more followed, all of similar size. Selecting a different spot, another cast, and another tip wrenching bite saw me trying to tame a bonkers fighter, which turned out to be a bream/roach hybrid! My first on a lure! A few more perch followed, but then my time was up. By this time, the rain was teeming down and I was getting steadily more uncomfortable as the banks were getting precarious, so I decided to head home, happy in the knowledge that I’ve found another spot worth further investigation; if you haven’t explored your local canal, maybe now is the time to seek out that surprise perch? Who knows, it could be waiting for you!

KUDA WE DESERVED MUSKWE BETTER - REDFEARN SIGNS A TWORotherham United manager Neil Redfearn believed his side deserved much better after a narrow defeat to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. An own goal in the first half from Luke Hyam was enough to seal the points for the home team, but the Millers will be left wondering how they didn’t take something from the game after creating good opportunities in both halves. After the game the Millers manager remained upbeat despite the defeat, praising his side for their performance, and urging them to take confidence from their display. “I have to say that we were the better side, particularly second half, you could say that we were camped inside their half at times,” said Redfearn “We created enough chances. In the first half we had two or three opportunities to go in front. The goal is a mishap, the ball into the box should have been dealt with and obviously Luke puts the ball into his own goal. “We have to stay upbeat because that is four performances on the trot that have been good. We have played well today and at times we have made them look ordinary and we have created enough chances. The bottom line is that if you create chances you have to put them in

the back of the net. “The performance is heartening. The application from the lads was first class. It was an upbeat performance and I said to them in the dressing room ‘you don’t go out with your heads down, get your heads up and push your chest out’ because we have been the better side tonight. “We have to keep going. We need to dust ourselves off and we need to go again. We need to keep getting people in front of goal and we need to keep saying the same message. We have to be ruthless; we have to make sure that these chances turn into points.” Redfearn is hopeful of welcoming back trio Leon Best, Danny Ward and Stephen Kelly for the trip to Huddersfield on Tuesday. Best is available again after suspension, whilst Ward and Kelly are fighting to be fit after missing the game tonight through injury. “I am hoping to have Best, Kelly and Danny Ward available,” he added. “The signs are good that it is looking that way so that will be a big plus. They add strength. “We go to Huddersfield and if we can put the same performance in then we have a chance. I was really pleased with the performance tonight.”

YEAR DEAL...

Rotherham United Academy scholar Kuda Muskwe has signed a two-year professional contract with the club. The striker has been in red hot form in front of goal this season and he has been rewarded with his first professional contract with the Millers.

MILLERS WERE UNLUCKY MILLERS ‘keeper Lee Camp believes his side “have to dust themselves” down following their narrow defeat at the hands of Blackburn Rovers on Friday night. Despite a spirited performance from Neil Redfearn’s men, the Millers returned over the Pennines empty-handed as Luke Hyam’s unfortunate first-half own goal proved decisive in a tight contest at Ewood Park. Either side of the winner, Hyam and Lee Frecklington had early efforts cleared off the home line before Jonson ClarkeHarris headed wide late on as Rotherham searched in vain for the equaliser.

Muskwe has worked his way through the Academy structure after initially signing for the club as an under 16. This season he has plundered nine goals in almost as many games and has been instrumental in the Academy’s recent good run of form. “Kuda is someone who has caught the eye, and we saw him recently in a behind closed doors game and he looked really bright,” boss Neil Redfearn told www. themillers.co.uk “He is young player with bags of talent. He is very athletic, he has pace and he is a goalscorer. His record so far this season for the under 18s is excellent, and he is someone who we have identified that can develop. “I have seen him play in games but the

recent behind closed doors match was against really good opposition, and he didn’t look out of place. He is a player that we can look to develop, and it is also nice to have one of our own coming through. “With the situation that we are in at the moment we have to go with our experience, but the bigger picture is that we want to start bringing through and developing our own players.” Muskwe has appeared twice for the reserves in the Final Third Development League, scoring in the 3-2 home defeat to an experienced Hartlepool United. His other highlights this season include two goals against Grimsby Town for the Academy in a 6-2 victory, and a second brace in the recent 4-0 victory at Bradford City.

Speaking exclusively to www.themillers. co.uk afterwards, Camp believes his side were unlucky not to claim a share of the spoils in East Lancashire. “Goals change games and we don’t not seem to get our noses in front when we have the opportunity and we get caught with sucker punches here and there,” Camp insisted. “I think it was a great reaction after the goal. In the second half, we dominated the play and towards the end, we had them on the ropes at times but we couldn’t find that little bit of magic or bit of creativity to get that goal.” Rotherham fell behind when Craig Conway cut inside to fire a tantalising centre into the box and Hyam, in attempting to clear the danger, could only head the ball into the visitors net- with Camp a helpless bystander. With the goal proving crucial in the end, the ex-Derby stopper admitted it

was a disappointing goal for his side to concede, at a stage of the game when they looked relatively comfortable defensively. “It was disappointing for us to concede from a second phase set play,” Camp added. “It’s something we work hard on and pride ourselves on defending. We knew about their threat. They have got good delivery from both sides and players, who attack the ball so it’s disappointing to concede the way we did.” Despite the Millers missing the opportunity to escape the Championship drop zone, Camp believes his side must quickly turn their attentions to tomorrow night’s trip to local rivals Huddersfield Town, as they seek a reversal in fortunes. “We are where we are and we need to win games, simple as that,” Camp added philosophically.

PENS FERGUSON HAILS STEWART: IT’S MY BEST EVINA NEW DEAL LATE COMEBACK Darren Ferguson said that the stunning 3-2 win over Crewe Alexandra on Saturday was his best at the club. The Scot echoed the sentiments of many after his side had roared back in the dying seconds of the game to steal three points courtesy of a dramatic ending in which the hosts went from a losing position to winning inside five minutes. “The reaction of the dugout at the end of the game, we just erupted,” said Ferguson. “If we’d have lost it would have been a right blow for us. Credit the players as they’ve dug in and showed character. “Once we got the equaliser I thought “we might just go on and win this”. “The team has got that real determination to win games of football.” It is now the third straight game in which Rovers have come from behind to at least salvage a draw and Ferguson put that down to the “identity” that has been created. “I said to them at half time to be disciplined and make sure our concentration when we’ve got the ball that we don’t get done on the counter attack and to lose a goal so late on like

we did was a real blow,” he said. “But for Cameron (Stewart) to come up with a goal like that and we have Andy (Williams) with a really good finish to win it as well. “I think the way in which we won it shows everyone that we’ve got something about us and an identity as to how we want to play. We now have to get better at the system as teams will see how we’re playing and try and nullify us. “It’s certainly the best win since I’ve been here, if not the whole season. As soon as Andy took that touch on the edge of the box I fancied him (to score).”

Midfielder comments on injury time free kick that set up grandstand win. Cameron Stewart said that the Doncaster Rovers dressing room was “ecstatic” after coming from 2-1 down in injury time to defeat Crewe Alexandra at the Keepmoat Stadium. The Ipswich Town loanee struck a sweet free kick for his fourth goal of the season for what looked to be a point. However there was still time for Andy Williams to bag an unlikely winner. “I think everyone’s ecstatic in the dressing room. To win the game 3-2 and in that manner – with it being so late –we’re buzzing and so happy to have the three points,” he said. “I was itching to get on and I’d like to think that every game I’ve come on I’ve played my part and to score the goal and set us on our way to a win was another one of those. “It’s the best free kick I’ve ever hit. As soon as it was given I said to Conor (Grant) that I was having it and I’ve put it in the top corner.” Stewart’s performances from the bench have seen him have the desired effect in recent games as Rovers recorded their sixth win in eight games but he stressed he won’t be banging on the door of manager Darren Ferguson. “I think hopefully my performances will speak for themselves,” admitted Stewart. “All I can do is my bit and keep in his

eye line and I’d like think that I am playing well when I come on and it’s hard to get a start and I respect that the boys are playing well and I’m just going to have to wait for my chance. “Even before the result you could see the belief and confidence coming back to the squad. Game by game we’re getting better. “If the gaffer was to ask me to stay then its something that I would think about. It’s a conversation that’s not really been had yet and we’ll have to see what January brings. “I think you can see now that there is a bubble coming back around the place, everyone’s happy and the feeling when you go in on a Monday morning when you’ve won compared to when you’ve lost is second to none!”

Doncaster Rovers Football Club are proud to announce that Cedric Evina has penned a new two and a half year contract which will see him remain at Keepmoat Stadium until the summer of 2018. Evina joined Rovers in 2014 and has featured 26 times this season already with his 50th appearance for the club coming in last week’s win over Cambridge United. Upon signing fans favourite Evina said: “I am really enjoying my time here at Rovers; Darren (Ferguson) is a great manager to work for and he has helped me start enjoying my football again. “The fans have been great this season and I enjoy playing in front of them every week. There is a real buzz about the place now and once again I want to thank you all for making me feel part of this club.” Darren Ferguson said: “We are absolutely delighted with Cedric signing a new deal, it shows exactly the direction the club need to go, and are heading in. To get Cedric tied down to this club for 2 1/2 years is fantastic for us all. He is a fans favourite and I would like to thank the board and Gavin Baldwin for making this happen so quickly.”

BLADES NEWS2015/16 SHARP EARNS BLADES WIN Billy Sharp turned in United’s late winner in an action-packed encounter with secondplaced Coventry City. United weathered a storm before substitute Sharp earned the Blades three welcome points. Manager Adkins made three changes for the televised clash with the Sky Blues, playing in red! Edgar, Woolford and Sammon all started, Harris missed out through injury, Adams was suspended and Sharp dropped to the bench. Coventry made United kick towards the Kop in the first half but not before moving tributes to former Blades goalkeeper Alan Hodgkinson MBE and Official Club Photographer Martyn Harrison, who both passed away earlier in the week. There was an element of sizing each other up in the opening 15 minutes

and neither side could claim to be on top. The first chance arrived on 19 minutes when Lameiras provided a ball through the defence for Armstrong and whilst United appealed for offside, Long made a tremendous save. The goal gave Coventry impetus and McEveley was booked for a late challenge on Lameiras. Turner missed twice from the same corner. A couple of Blades corners caused problems for the Coventry defence, although Charles-Cook always looked keen to come off his line. Late in the half Hammond was booked for an accumulation for fouls and the visiting side’s Turner was also cautioned for a cynical challenge on Done. Close to the break United wasted a couple of chances to test Charles-Cook before the half-time whistle left all to play for in the second

half. The early opportunities in the second period came from the visitors. Fleck’s long-range strike was wide and then Long produced another fine save to keep out Lameiras after an attempted Collins clearance dropped to the Coventry player. On 63 minutes Coventry went tremendously close. Armstrong robbed Collins and from his low cross, Fleck and Murphy failed to attach themselves to the ball with the goal gaping. Soon after they went closer still! Murphy beat Brayford and from his cross there were a number of ricochets ahead of Long dropping on the ball with the Coventry players appealing that it had crossed the line. Between the aforementioned chances, Sharp was introduced for United and the next chance - the first of the

half for the Blades - was to be crucial. On 80 minutes Coutts delivered a corner from the left and after Charles-Cook failed to gather in a crowded box, SHARP managed to turn the ball home, although it took an age to cross the line! The Sheffieldborn striker celebrated by kissing his black armband. Predictably, the Blades slowed the action in the final ten minutes and professionally protected Long. Coventry got more desperate late on and Ricketts was sent off for a second bookable offence in five minutes of injury-time. Late on Flynn, on as a substitute, used up valuable seconds and forced a save out Charles-Cook, whilst the Blades were on the offensive as the referee’s final whistle signalled three vital points.

ADKINS PRAISES BLADES WINNING DISPLAY Nigel Adkins heaped praise on his players following Sunday’s 1-0 victory over highflying Coventry City at Bramall Lane. Substitute Billy Sharp scored the only goal of the game late on to snatch all three points for United, who produced an excellent team performance to end the Sky Blues long unbeaten run in Sky Bet League One. Reflecting on the success, Adkins remarked: “We played a very good Coventry City side and overall we did very well to nullify a lot of their threats. “It was a spirited, disciplined and committed display from a group of players who give it a real go for each other. “Sometimes you need fortune to win football

matches, we haven’t had it much this season, but of late things have turned. “We defended very well and were always in the game, then Billy Sharp comes off the bench and scores the winning goal from a set-piece.” The Gaffer was also delighted to end a tough week for the Club, following the deaths of Alan Hodgkinson and Martyn Harrison, on a high. He added: “We take the three points and the clean sheet and look to build and if we continue to show that grit and resilience then we’ll continue to move up the league. “It was a poignant day following the passing of two Club legends, but maybe they were both shinning down on us.”

OWLS NEWS2015/16 SECOND HALF COMEBACK BANNAN DELIGHTED WITH EARNS DRAW FOR OWLS MAIDEN STRIKE The Owls and Cardiff shared four goals and the points from an entertaining clash in the Welsh capital. And it was Wednesday who left the Cardiff City Stadium in higher spirits as Carlos Carvalhal’s men came from 2-0 behind to salvage a draw. First half goals from Craig Noone and Anthony Pilkington put the Bluebirds in the driving seat but the visitors responded in the second period and levelled thanks to Fernando Forestieri and Barry Bannan. The incentive for the Owls was a leapfrog over their hosts and into the top six but after a bright start, they suffered a double blow 20 minutes in. First Sam Hutchinson succumbed to what appeared a hip knock, to be replaced by Alex Lopez, before Wednesday conceded a penalty when Keiren Westwood felled Tony Watt in the box. Noone stepped up to execute perfectly from 12 yards. That gave the Owls

a jolt and just two minutes later, parity was almost restored with their clearest opening of the first half. Liam Palmer sent a telling delivery into the danger zone, Lucas Joao applied the merest of touches, but the ball bounced back into play off the post. Wednesday went on to enjoy more of the possession but were hit on the counter to their cost 11 minutes before the break. A hopeful punt from the back from Joe Ralls was seized upon by Pilkington, who showed strength and pace to advance on goal and round Westwood to double the lead. And it might have been even worse prior to the half time whistle as Watt had a golden chance to perhaps put the game out of sight but Westwood came to the Owls’ rescue with a fine low save when the odds were in the striker’s favour. The next goal would be key and both sides came close after the restart – Forestieri from distance for Wednesday, while

City’s Aron Gunnarsson fired just over the crossbar with a dipping volley. Noone then jinked past two challenges and tried a clever chip that evaded both Westwood and the woodwork – before Wednesday got a foothold back into the contest on 62 minutes. Little seemed on for Forestieri with his back to goal 20 yards out but the Italian swivelled and drilled a low screamer past the stunned David Marshall. The Owls had the bit between their teeth and Bannan brushed the top of the net with a free kick with a warning shot that Cardiff did not heed. With 14 minutes to go, Ross Wallace showed great awareness to pull back for the advancing Bannan, who smashed a fierce half volley across and beyond Marshall to equalise. Cardiff hit back themselves and almost won it at the last, first through Watt who stabbed wide and then Noone saw a sweet strike superbly saved by Westwood.

Influential midfield man Barry Bannan bagged his first goal for the Owls at Cardiff on Saturday. Wednesday were trailing

‘WE PUT ALL THE MEAT ON THE FIRE’ Carlos Carvalhal likened the Owls’ comeback at Cardiff to ‘putting all the meat on the fire’ as they went all out for victory in the Welsh capital. Second half goals from Fernando Forestieri and Barry Bannan cancelled out Peter Noone and Anthony Pilkington strikes before the break to haul Wednesday level. Either side might have nicked a winner, prompting Carvalhal to say: “As we say in Portugal, we put all the meat on the fire because we needed to eat! “We scored two goals, we were eating well, and we threw everything on the fire to get the winning goal. “We normally play more compact than that but this game was very open and Cardiff wanted a winning goal and so did we. “Neither side got another goal and I think a draw was probably the correct result. “Against Derby last week, I thought we lost two points but today we have won one point because we were 2-0 down at half time.”

2-0 before second half strikes from Fernando Forestieri and Bannan stunned the hosts. For Bannan, the ex-Palace man was delighted to hit his first goal for the club to help Wednesday post a big point in the Welsh capital. He said: “Ross played it right into my path and lucky enough I’ve hit the target this time and scored. “I was due a goal and it’s a good time because we got a point from a big game for us. “I’ve always said we have a great squad here, with a lot of talented players and we want to aim high. “We came here to win today and if we would have, we would be top

six. We want to be right up there at the end of the season.” Bannan also stressed his desire to extend his stay with Wednesday, where he says he is thoroughly enjoying his football. He continued: “First and foremost I’ve enjoyed it here and the fans have taken to me. “I enjoy the way we play football, this way suits my game perfectly and I’m thriving on it on because the gaffer has given me great confidence, so why would you want to leave?”
