YOUNG VOICES UNITE AT THE SHEFFIELD ARENA
ALBERT SNODGRASS
I came downstairs this morning to see that my curtains were drawn. All the furniture was real though. Even though you are still allowed to smoke in your own house, do you have to stub it out when a burglar breaks in, as your house is now his workplace? The wife and I went to a bank robbers-themed fancy dress party last night. Well I did. She stayed in the car, keeping the engine running. I don’t know why I just bought some new coconut shampoo... I haven’t even got any coconuts. I came home drunk last night and my wife wasn’t happy. “How much have you had to drink?” she asked, staring at me. “Nothing” I slurred. “Look at me!” she shouted, “It’s either me or the pub, which one is it?” I paused for a second and said, “It’s you, I can tell by the voice.” A woman brings eight-year-old Johnny home and tells his mother that he was caught playing doctors and nurses with Mary, her eight-year-old daughter. Johnny’s mother says, “Let’s not be too harsh on them... they are bound to be curious about sex at that age.” “Curious about sex?” replies Mary’s mother. “He’s taken her bloody appendix out!” God is talking to one of his angels. He says, “Boy, I just created a 24-hour period of alternating light and darkness on Earth.” “What are you going to do now?” asks the angel. “Call it a day,” says God. I saw a sign yesterday that said, “Have you seen this man?” with a little picture of the criminal and a number to call. I was bored so I rung them up and said, “No, I haven’t.”

Over 25,000 local children will be performing at Sheffield Arena next week with Young Voices over 5 nights from Monday 18thFriday 22nd January. Tickets purchased online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk or by phone on 0114 256 5656 are priced £23.65 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena box office are priced £22.58 including booking fee. Young Voices provides an unrivalled musical opportunity for primary school children to perform all styles of music including folk, pop, rock and classical. Young Voices is designed to unify children from across the region, boost their confidence and provide lifelong memories for them and their families. Teachers & Pupils practice the dance routines and learn the songs in their music lessons for many months before they excitedly come together for the penultimate show at their local arena. This is an unmissable opportunity for local school choirs to sing
in huge arenas alongside some of the most talented & well known artists from the world of music. Their choirs range from 4,500 to 8,500 children, all performing at the same time to capacity audiences of friends and family. Nothing can prepare you for the sound of thousands of children singing in harmony. Young Voices combines the power of singing together as one, with accompaniment from a wide range of musicians and artists, to create an amazing performance. Every year, schools across the country practise their music in class with their teachers to prepare themselves to take part in these massive concerts. Over the years the children in the choir have performed with artists such as Alexandra Burke, Joss Stone, and Gary Barlow as well as raising over 1 million pounds for Children’s charities such as CLIC Sargent. “The most amazing time of my life” – Xfactor winner Alexandra Burke on her time at Young Voices Ben Lewis, Managing Director of Young Voices is adamant that “every pupil should be exposed to music at an early age, whether the joy is singing, playing an instrument or loving the sound of music, the potential benefits are huge. My father David, started Young Voices 20 years ago, I can’t believe how much we’ve grown. 20 arena dates to mark our 20th anniversary is such an achievement and shows the we are making a real difference to the children and schools” “It was a most fabulous experience! All the children sung brilliantly and enjoyed shining their torches to create incredible effects. We all enjoyed the dancing and listening to all the singers and groups. “Music Teachers at Foresters Primary School

COUNCIL CONTINUES CRACKDOWN ON ILLICIT ALCOHOL SALES Sheffield City Council have shown further commitment to the crack down on illicit alcohol sales, after revoking the licence from the owner of two shops, who was caught selling illegal alcohol despite a previous offence. This was the outcome of the Licensing
Sub-Committee hearing held on Monday 4 January, which saw Rhythm and Booze on Abbeydale Road and also on Brooklands Avenue, Fulwood permanently lose their licences after the seizure of illegal alcohol following inspections by the Trading Standards team. The illicit alcohol was discovered on sale just six weeks after the licensee, Mr Jigar Patel, had been convicted of similar offences at Sheffield Magistrates Court in July 2015. The grounds for reviewing
these licences came under Prevention of Crime and Disorder, Public safety and Protection of Children from Harm. Representation was also made by the Sheffield Safeguarding Children Board over concerns about the serious lack of systems in place to control under age sales at both premises. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Public Health and equality said: “We will not tolerate the sale of illicit alcohol products. In this case the alcohol was genuine but
had been bought illegally. That means Mr Patel could not have known whether the contents were genuine or counterfeit and this poses serious health risks to the communities these shops serve, hence the need to review the licences. “Counterfeit alcohol can cause severe illness, vomiting, nausea, blindness and death. It is not produced to industry standards, so consumers have no idea of the strength of the alcohol they are consuming. “This is not the first time Mr Patel has been found selling
illegal products, so we have taken the necessary steps to prevent him from doing this again. Not only was he taking risks with his customers’ health, he was breaching Trade Marks and Food Safety controls in addition to the avoidance of Excise duty.” Illicit, or illegal alcohol, is either alcohol that is produced in unlicensed distilleries or people’s homes using replica bottles labelled as a genuine product or is genuine branded alcohol that has avoided paying UK taxes and duty either by
being stolen and bought in bulk or buying illegally from a warehouse where the products are intended solely for export. Sheffield City Council’s crackdown on illegal alcohol has been ongoing since 2011 and this case is yet another example of the great work – which saw them nominated for a national award in June last year – that Trading Standards and the licencing committee are doing. Advice leaflets on how to spot illicit alcohol are available at: www.sheffielddact.org.uk

REAL MEALS & DEALS AT SHEFFIELD’S NEWEST RESTAURANT We pay a visit to Sheffield’s newest restaurants, Cluck. Which can be found at the services area just off the Parkway and Prince of Wales Road (the former Little Chef). Words by Andrea Barton-Lawrence

My first visit to Cluck gave a good impression as we pulled in along a well-lit driveway, very welcome on a grey January day! We found ourselves inside a spacious restaurant with great natural lighting and a choice of normal table seating or booths.
Tenerife Playa De Las Americas 13th May 2016 - 11 Nights - Oro Negro Hotel - Half Board Doncaster Airport - ........... £449pp
We were able to relax with a drink from the impressive bar, stocked with a range of draught and bottled beers and ciders, with the expected selection of wines, sprits and soft drinks to cater for any choice. We were able to choose from an extensive menu, complemented by a good range on the Specials Board, and my attention was immediately drawn to the Henderson’s Relish Chicken Wings! My friends chose the Cajun Spiced Wings, and we were presented with a selection of dips alongside them. We were impressed by the careful cooking, which ensured the meat was perfect – juicy and falling off the bone – a great start to the meal. My choice for main course was the Chicken & Bacon Stack – a lovely moist chicken breast topped by a thick and tasty bacon steak, smothered in a tangy barbecue sauce and topped with melted cheese – very tasty and certainly a generous portion! This however looked like a snack in comparison to my friend’s Mega Mixed Grill – a huge portion of perfectly grilled meats finished off with a topping of eggs, sausage and mushrooms – definitely not one for the lighter appetite! The third guest chose Quack’s Famous Chicken & Red Onion Pie – thick chicken chunks and beautiful light pastry combined to create a fairly unusual
but extremely flavoursome dish. All the main courses come with unlimited home-made chips, and fantastic crunchy onion rings – in fact they were so good we nibbled our way through two portions! There was an impressive offering of desserts, but we simply didn’t have room for any more and so we passed on a third course. The menu also offers a variety to suit every taste – curries, salads, snacks and a constantly-changing selection of daily specials. Also on offer are Sunday lunches with a choice of roast beef and chicken. And of course don’t forget – if you don’t fancy the restaurant, the drive-through offers the opportunity to order all the food specially packed for take-away, without having to leave your car! Cluck is open Monday-Friday 6.30am – 11pm, Saturday & Sunday 7am – 11pm and the Drive-Through opens from 7am – 9pm daily. CHAMP MAYWEATHER DEF LEPPARD’S JOE ELLIOTT TALKS BOXING ANNOUNCES CITY HALL APPEARANCE ABOUT DAVID BOWIE’S DEATH Well known Bowie aficionado Joe Elliott has given a statement on the news of David Bowie’s tragic death. Joe was a huge fan of Bowie - he had a Bowie/Mick Ronson tribute act The Cybernauts
On Monday Joe said: “I heard the news today oh boy .... And I can’t believe what I’ve heard .... David Bowie is dead. He’s been a massive part of my life since I first heard Starman in 1972. So many of us came in at that moment, myself, Bono, Boy George, Morrissey, Gary Kemp, Jim Kerr, Brett Anderson, Pete Murphy, Gary Numan, millions of fans, all very different from each other but all with one thing in common, the belief that a true rock & roll
SHEFFIELD CHEERS FOR BEER WEEK! 2016 sees SIBA’s BeerX festival return to Sheffield for the fourth year running. Which is something that beer lover Jules Gray thinks is worth celebrating – so much so that she's decided to continue the annual event Sheffield Beer Week - to coincide with the national event again in 2016.
alien had landed on earth & he was ours. I own every record he ever made, he was plastered all over my bedroom wall as a kid, he was my very first bootleg, his CDs take up 2 whole shelves in my collection. I have personally recorded over 25 of his songs either on my own, with Leppard or with the Cybernauts. I met him 2 or 3 times & always found him charming & engaging. It is said, never meet your heroes, they will let you down. Bulls**t. He was open, funny, a good listener !! & when myself & Phil joined David on stage with Queen, Mick Ronson & Ian Hunter at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Gig in 1992 it became one of the most memorable musical moments of my life. I can’t believe he’s gone. A huge whole has opened up in my heart & it feels like my
youth has been further ripped away from me. At least I have a lifetime of his music to comfort me, as we all have, as he left behind one hell of a legacy. The Starman waiting in the sky waits no longer. Rest in Peace David Bowie and thank you for giving us believers something to believe in.”
With around 5,000 people visiting the city for BeerX, organiser Jules sees Sheffield Beer Week (14-20 March) as a real opportunity to show off the very best of our beer scene. Jules Gray, joint proprietor of Hop Hideout beer shop on Abbeydale Road, said: “I was really pleased with the response that we had to Sheffield Beer Week last year, so much so, that it was obviously the right thing to continue with the annual event. This year breweries Abbeydale, True North Brew Co and
Thornbridge have already agreed to host events and are launching new beers during the week!" Sheffield Beer Week runs from 14 to 20th March. Head to www.sheffieldbeerweek. co.uk/events/ for details of events taking place, events continued to be added weekly. If you’re a bar or pub and interested in holding an event, contact Sheffield Beer Week at sheffieldbeerweek@gmail.com for more information.
Floyd Mayweather Jr, one of the greatest boxers of all time, is set to appear at Sheffield City Hall on Sunday 7th February 2016 to give Yorkshire boxing fans an insight into his life and career. In An Evening with Floyd Mayweather Jr, part of his United Kingdom Victory Tour, the recently retired fighter will be interviewed by Sky Sports boxing pundit and former world champion, Sheffield’s own Johnny Nelson. The audience will then have the opportunity to put their own questions forward in a Q&A session. Mayweather retired undefeated from professional boxing last year, having achieved a record of 49-0 over the course of a glittering career. Hailed as not just the best pound-for-pound fighter of his generation but one of the all-time greats, Mayweather has earned twelve world title belts across five different weight divisions. The son of welterweight contender Floyd Mayweather Sr, Mayweather Jr showed prodigious talent in the ring from a young age despite a troubled childhood. He won national Golden Gloves championships in 1993, 1994 and 1996, going on to represent the United States of America at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, where he earned a bronze medal after a controversial decision ruled him out of the gold medal fight. Mayweather has gone on to take part in some of the biggest fights in history,
generating well over a billion dollars of pay-per-view revenue throughout his career. His much anticipated bout against Manny Pacquiao in May 2015 remains the most lucrative in the history of professional boxing, with the pay-perview being purchased 4.6 million times. His appearance at Sheffield City Hall promises to be a memorable evening, providing a rare glimpse into the life of one of sport’s most prolific champions.
Tickets for An Evening with Floyd Mayweather Jr: United Kingdom Victory Tour (subject to booking fees) at Sheffield City Hall are available online through at www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk through the ticket hotline on 0114 2 789 789 and in person at the Sheffield City Hall Box Office.

A TRIBUTE TO DAVID BOWIE By Kt Evans
The 11th January 2016 was an exceptionally difficult day for music lovers across the world when it was announced that legendary musician David Bowie had lost his fight with cancer after only eighteen months. Considered an innovator within popular music, notably throughout the 1970s, Bowie’s legacy will live on through his powerful repertoire to include “Live On Mars,” “Rebel Rebel” and “Heroes.” David Bowie was without a doubt one of the finest exports ever to emerge out of the UK. Born in raised in Brixton, South London on 8th January 1947, the star had released a staggering twenty six albums, with his latest “Black Star,” released four days before his tragic death. Starting off his career as a mime artist, Bowie entered the music industry with his debut hit, “Space Oddity” which was released in 1969. In the early 1970s, he re-emerged as a glam rock pioneer under the stage name of “Ziggy Stardust,” which saw the legend transform into an alternative sensation. A string of successful hits in the USA followed on, to include “Fame” alongside the massive single “Heroes” in 1979. Bowie most certainly wasn’t afraid of the limelight and experimented with unique music styles to include an album solely dedicated to instrumental along with hinting at jazz and jungle influences. David Bowie was also touched with massive success within the film industry. His acting roles include the alternative character in “The Man Who Fell to Earth” in 1976, along with roles in “Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence” in 1983, The gobin king Jareth in Labyrinth in 1986, Pontius Pilate in Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ in 1988 and Nikole Tesla in The Prestige in 2006. However, this cannot be matched by the ridiculous amounts of success Bowie received within his musical career. Selling an estimated 140 million records worldwide, the Londoner was placed at number 29 in the BBC’s 2002 poll of the 100 Greatest Britons of all time. He was also awarded nine platinum album certificates, eleven gold and eight silver, and in the US, five platinum and seven golden album certificates. Not to mention the fact that in 1996, David Bowie was also introduced into the legendary Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Reaction to the death of David Bowie has been seen all over the world, with celebrities, musicians and publications across the globe all posting their respects for the performer. Speaking on her twitter page, Madonna wrote “David Bowie changed the course of my life forever…he was so chic and beautiful and elegant…Thank you David Bowie, I owe you a lot. The world will miss you.” Columbia Records, David Bowie’s record label
posted a statement saying “we are deeply saddened by the loss of David Bowie. It was an honour and a privilege to release his music into the world.” Ringo Star posted on twitter “God bless David Bowie, peace and love to all his family,” along with rock group ACDC who posted the hashtag “RIPDavidBowie he was a true legend.” Annie Lennox also joined the twitter conversation by posting “no one exists forever and it seems our elegant gentleman was well aware that his last mortal chapter was about to reach it’s conclusion. Dark Star was his parting gift.” Paul Mcartney also paid his tributes to Bowie by posting “very sad news to wake up to on this raining morning. David was a great star and I treasure the moments we had together.” David Bowie leaves a legacy behind of hugely influential music, fashion and creativity along with the mantra that ‘you can be whoever you want to be… never conform to anything and always try out new things.’ We will leave you with his own words as a memory to the legend that was, David Bowie.
LIVE REVIEW: H.I.M. H.I.M. Nottingham Rock City Words & Pic by Roy Goodall ARGUABLEY to the paying public at large Finnish band H.I.M. are a one man fighting machine with front man and spokesperson Ville Valo taking centre stage throughout this Nottingham show. The other talented members seem nothing but a side issue, which is sad as I certainly felt they more than made up the whole package, each one of them playing their hearts out. Opening with Buried Alive By Love, Poison and The Kiss Of Dawn, one of the more stronger tracks off recent album Venus Doom, the crowd lapped up this special show which was to mark the 35th anniversary of Rock City as a live and thriving rock venue. Something to be proud of me thinks. Anyway, we had twenty two songs on this exclusive evening and with H.I.M. having not played these shores in a while the place was naturally buzzing with excitement. Not being an ardent fan, I’m more an admirer, there were lots of songs I didn’t know
which was fine though it has to be said that the vocal mix was very weak. At times it was hard to decipher Ville’s voice which I guess adds to the doom tag that the band at times has. Added to this was the light show which again I felt could have been better. Maybe at a theatre show the whole production would have been grander. That said, you really can’t beat the atmosphere of a club as the crowd went wild when Wings Of A Butterfly and Wicked Games broke through the public address system and as song followed song, before we knew it encore time beckoned. I was expecting even greater cheers for the band’s return but after an initial spurt all went quiet, which was strange. As the band reappeared though we had more as they closed proceedings with the evening’s second cover song, Billy Idol’s hit Rebel Yell. Formed back in 1991 in Helsinki H.I.M. have been doing their stuff for close on twenty five years now and have an extensive back catalogue of work. My only worry is that it all seems like a solo pilgrimage rather than a full-blown gang project.
“The truth is of course is that there is no journey. We are arriving and departing all at the same time.”

Syd Barrett; the former lead singer, lead guitarist and songwriter for Pink Floyd, released his psychedelic debut solo album, The Madcap Laughs in 1970. Barrett wasn’t the easiest artist to work with, which explains why it took a year and five producers to finally get the album recorded. With Barrett, it’s all about the lyrics and on The Madcap Laughs he expresses a spectrum of moods with typically incredible imagery that give us a glimpse into his state of mind at the time. There’s some pretty positive songs; Love You is fun and bouncy with a nursery rhyme feel to it. Here We Go is a catchy song with a great melody and the affectionately delivered line, ‘A big band is better than you.’ There’s pain and despair too, no more so as on Dark Globe, with the heart-breaking poignant lyric ‘Won’t you miss me? Wouldn’t you miss me at all?’ Golden Hair is a haunting piece in line with what Barrett produced for Pink Floyd on Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. The highlight of the record is the beautifully vivid Octopus, but the most interesting song is probably If It’s In You: The track features conversation with Barrett; it’s just like an outtake that could have been cut out but by leaving it in, a sense of realism is created that brings the listener right into the studio. It’s a remarkable album, the kind of which are a rarity, that will always stand alone as a unique part of music history. Barrett turned to living a reclusive life in 1978 and was rarely seen in public. He died in 2006; a rock and roll icon of almost mythical stature, whose potential was sadly never realised.

ROAD OFFENDERS ESCAPE DRIVING BANS Five drivers with more than 37 points on their licences have escaped driving bans because of the "exceptional hardship" it would have caused them. Figures released by the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency following a Freedom of Information request by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) show one of the motorists, a provisional licence holder from Oxford, amassed a grand total of 51 points. People who receive 12 or more points on
their licence within three years are usually disqualified from driving, although judges are allowed to show leniency if it is thought that a ban - six months in the case of a first disqualification - would have an exceptional impact on their life. The driver with 51 points was caught speeding three times in a 30mph zone and has seven offences of not providing their details when requested by the authorities. Another from Basildon accumulated 42 points, also for failing to supply driver details. They had previously held points for speeding, including one incident where they were clocked travelling at 109mph. One from Burnley escaped a ban despite racking up 38 points after being caught breaking the limit in 30mph zones a total of 10 times. The IAM study also found that a dozen people have been able to accumulate more than 28 points. Chief executive Sarah Sillars warns that drivers may believe motoring laws are "ineffective or unimportant" if persistent offenders are not disqualified. She wants to see a "joined-up approach to the judicial process", rather than having individual courts making decisions on prosecutions, something which she claims can lead to inconsistencies and devalue the simple 12 points and you are out road safety message. From Mark Shaw Manager Driver Training of FedEx UK Blessed with a moderate climate, the UK doesn’t experience extreme winter weather as often as some countries, but when the snow and ice does hit, the consequences can be severe. During the winter months, it’s not always possible to postpone journeys, with millions of drivers still needing to use Britain’s roads for professional or personal reasons. So as a Qualified ‘Advanced’ Driver and LGV driver with 38 years’ experience driving on all kinds of roads, in all kinds of conditions, I wanted to share my top tips for safe driving in poor weather. Preparing for your journey Keep essential items in your vehicle. Ice scrapers are helpful when leaving in the morning and a folding shovel, kept in the vehicle, can be useful for clearing a path through deep snow. Don’t forget your gloves, warm clothing/blankets, snacks and a safety triangle. Plan your journey. Try to use main roads wherever possible as they are more likely to have been cleared and gritted. Avoid using very quiet roads wherever possible. Keep an up-to-date map in the vehicle (don’t just rely on Sat-Nav). Make sure your fuel and fluid levels are topped up. You may need to make a longer journey than originally planned due to road closures or traffic congestion. Charge your mobile phone and keep a spare charger in the car. This will allow you to call for help in an emergency. If you are travelling alone on a long journey, let someone know your ETA so they can alert the emergency services if you do not arrive. Consider winter tyres. If you live in an isolated area known for bad weather conditions, winter tyres could be a good investment or you might consider hiring or buying snow chains. Regular Tyres should be at the correct pressure and have good all round tread depth. Keep windscreens and all windows clean and clear. You should also remember to fill up the windscreen fluid bottle with screen wash, to avoid freezing. Use your heater system or air conditioning to demist the windscreen. This will lessen the amount of condensation inside the vehicle. Make sure all lights and number plates are free from snow/Ice. This should be done on the front and the back, it’s a legal requirement. If a light stops working, replace them as soon as you can. Carry out a walk-round check of your vehicle before you set off on your journey. While driving Change your driving habits. Accelerate/brake gently, avoiding high revs, and consider setting off in a higher gear to avoid wheel spin. Keep well back from other vehicles. Remember that stopping distances can increase ten-fold in icy conditions. You should therefore drive accordingly and watch your speed. Keep a safe distance from the car in front and avoid sudden steering movements. It is also important to always keep an eye on the other cars and remember to use all your mirrors. Use dipped headlights or fog lights in reduced visibility. This alerts other drivers to your presence, but ensure you turn them off if visibility is above 100 metres. Keep an eye on both the weather and the temperature. When temperatures drop to around zero, keep a close eye on the road. If it looks wet, then it’s probably icy. Always be mindful about the possibility of black ice. Try to drive so that you don’t need your brakes. When the roads are icy, using your brakes can do more harm than good. Give yourself plenty of time to slow down, moving down the gear box gradually/smoothly to reduce speed in a controlled way.

ANGLER’S CORNER

My session this week began behind one of those drivers you could cheerfully wish evil things upon… When I’m on my way to this fishery, twenty odd miles distant, the last thing I want is to get stuck behind this particular guy, especially in the early hours of the morning, when he, and I, are the only vehicles on the road! As I pulled out onto the main road, the Volkswagen Golf was driven by one of those drivers who constantly remains 20mph under the National Speed Limit, unnecessarily applies the brakes when travelling uphill, or on corners, or when another vehicle approaches, or for aliens (probably) and as the road to the venue offers very little opportunity for overtaking, I found the red mist rising… We arrived at a roundabout, unfortunately at the same time as vehicles from other directions, and a ‘Mexican Standoff’ ensued. My protagonist waited for approximately eleventy million cars to clear the traffic island as the rush hour traffic became heavier, further hampering my progress, then at another roundabout, waited for a space sufficient for a warship to navigate the obstruction before proceeding…slowly! AHHH! YOU COULD HAVE GOT THE SPACE SHUTTLE IN THERE! Leaving the bright lights of town behind, I was forced to remain behind the VW for a number of miles as he slowed at every junction containing a waiting car to allow them onto the carriageway, flashing his lights to inform them of their freedom; surely he would turn off somewhere and I could resume my journey? Mile after mile, I followed my nemesis, watchful for random brake signals (and the occasional, equally random dazzling fog light, after all, it was raining) until it became apparent he too was going to the fishery! Surely not! I could give him a piece of my mind at last, and inform him of the requirement for additional lessons! Parking next to him, I quickly unclasped the seatbelt and stepped out to confront the other driver; as the gent closed his door, his cheery ‘Good morning’ immediately disarmed me however, and I found myself grunting an identical reply as he breezed past me to claim his ticket. I mean come on, what else was I supposed to do? I was only imagining the satisfaction a machine gun in the front grill would cause… Eventually, I found a peg which wasn’t underwater; the incessant rain of the previous few days had wreaked havoc around the venue with many pegs a mass of boggy mud, and I wasn’t prepared to sit in sludge. I have fished this place a number of times, and know that a winter carp is a real possibility, so I

2016 started very similar to how 2015 ended for the County Senior League. All but four games fell to waterlogged pitches, following the recent heavy rain that has hit the region. Division One Just two league games survived the rain, and both were in Division One. Caribbean Sports had a great start to the New Year, with a big 8-2 away win over mid-table Ecclesfield Red Rose. The win takes Caribbean into second place, six points behind league leaders Denaby United. AFC Dronfield also hosted Davy FC on the allweather pitch at Gosforth Playing Fields. Dronfield came out comfortable 6-1 winners. S&HCFA Association Cup Quarter-Finals We reached the Association Cup Quarter-Final stage on Saturday. The County Senior league has dominated the cup this year, with all eight remaining participants calling the league their home. All four of the Quarter-Finals were all scheduled for last Saturday, but only two went ahead. New Bohemians booked their place in the SemiFinals with a 3-2 win over Byron House at the SHU Sports Ground. Adam Smith starred for New Bohemians scoring twice. New Bohemians fell at this stage last season, when they lost 3-1 to Hall
set up two rods with almost identical rigs comprising a hook pattern I discovered at the end of last season. The Vardis ‘Turndown’ hook, combined with a micro swivel on the shank, seems to confuse and confound any carp which picks it up, and results in very secure hook holds. This is baited with my favourite ‘goanywhere’ offering, the Essential IB from Mainline Baits. I’ve found that I really can fish any venue with a huge amount of confidence using this particular wafter type boilie, and it’s done very well for me since I started using it. A small pva bag of crushed Mainline Hybrid was attached, and both were flung into the lake, aimed at a channel I knew passed though the peg. I’d set up with the wind at my back as the rain continued to slant down, and, as is usual, as soon as I positioned everything, the wind changed direction and drove the rain under the brolly making things very uncomfortable indeed… I lasted around four hours before my extremities started to fail, and my fingers slowly stiffened and turned blue, but I had caught. A single bleep on the receiver was enough for me to lift the rod, and a chubby double figure common came lazily to the net for a quick photograph, before it was returned to the murky (and rising) depths. I’d only witnessed one other fish being caught, and several anglers had seen sense and packed up before me, but it didn’t matter; I’d got my first carp of the season in the bag, justified the journey, and had enough for my weekly scribblings. I returned to the van, loaded the soaking tackle, slammed the doors, and climbed into the cab before selecting ‘proper hot’ on the heater dial. As my fingers thawed, and the screen cleared, I was surprised to watch a big green brolly spin past in the wind… closely followed by the sodden VW driver…. maybe there is a God after all…

REDFEARN TAKES POSITIVES AIMEN BELAÏD JOINS THE MILLERS Rotherham United manager Neil Redfearn admitted that his side need to be more ruthless in front of goal after a narrow defeat to Leeds United in the FA Cup. The Millers exited the competition after a wonder strike from Mustapha Carayol and a late second from Souleymane Doukara in a close encounter in West Yorkshire. Despite matching the hosts for long periods, the Millers couldn’t find a way through, but boss Redfearn admitted he was pleased with his side’s performance despite the result. “The first goal probably came in Leeds’ best spell in the first half,” Redfearn said after the game. “They had 10 minutes just before half time but up until then I would say we were probably the better of the two sides if I’m honest. We didn’t really create enough in that spell but we were the better footballing side. “The first goal is a fantastic strike and sometimes you just have to hold your hands up. We got back on top again and were in the ascendency for most of the second half and I’m just a little bit disappointed we didn’t create more in front of goal. “As a performance I’m pleased with it. We’ve come to Leeds twice now and there’s been nothing between the sides and to compete and match them in two games against a big club is good for us. It’s disappointing with the result but we have to move on now because we have a big game with Brighton on Tuesday night.
“We just lacked the final ball and that bit of quality. I have to be pleased with the application, the way we worked and how we closed down. “The little mistakes are disappointing because what it does is undo our good work, and 2-0 flattered Leeds a little bit today, although I probably thought that they deserved to go through.” Redfearn gave a debut to central defender Aïmen Belaïd after he completed his switch from Levski Sofia yesterday, and he was pleased with the Tunisian international’s contribution. “I thought he did well, particularly in the first half,” Redfearn continued. “He has got pace, you can see that and he plays out of trouble and he used the ball well. He intercepted things and stepped in and won his headers, he is a naturally left footed centre back and I thought he played well. “It gives Broady that chance now to step in and attack things and that is important. I thought the whole of the back four played well, we limited them to flurries around the box. They had one or two skirmishes in the first half but didn’t really create anything clear cut. “The more that you can settle your 11 down and have it balanced the better, because people start getting used to one and another’s games and how each other play. The best sides play together, and it is consistent. We have to try and be consistent now in our run in until the end of the season.”

Rotherham United have completed the signing of Tunisian international Aïmen Belaïd from Bulgarian side Levski Sofia. The central defender has signed a twoand-a-half year deal with the Millers and becomes the second arrival during the January transfer window following the loan signing of Shay Facey from Manchester City. The Paris-born defender has made his name in Bulgaria after spells with Lokomotiv Plovdiv and Levski Sofia, making over 50 appearances for the latter. “Aïmen is certainly a talented individual,” Rotherham United manager Neil Redfearn told www.themillers.co.uk “He has a good pedigree, after playing for one or two clubs across Europe, and he also has fantastic athleticism which is something that will help us. “He is technically a very good footballer, he is good on the ball and he can play at centre-back, left-back and in midfield. “He will add to some really strong competition for the first-team and he is someone who comes in at a time when we need strengthening.” The 27-year-old has experience of playing right across Europe after spells in Czech Republic, France and Bulgaria.
CAIRNS CHECKS IN WITH MILLERS Rotherham United have completed the signing of goalkeeper Alex Cairns on a deal until the end of the season. The former Leeds United Academy stopper is the third signing during the January transfer window following the arrival of defenders Shay Facey and Aïmen Belaïd. The Doncaster-born custodian made one senior appearance whilst at Elland Road, and also enjoyed loan spells at Barrow and Stalybridge Celtic. “I am delighted to be here,” Cairns told www.themillers.co.uk “I have enjoyed training with the boys today and I am really pleased to get started. “There is a good set of lads here in the dressing room and they have made me feel really welcome. “I know Paul Green from my time at Leeds and one or two others, so that has made for an easy transition.” Cairns, who last represented Chesterfield, is well known to Rotherham boss Neil
Redfearn from his time as Academy manager at Thorpe Arch, and the 23-yearold revealed he was thrilled to be linking up once again with his old mentor. “He has taught me everything I know so I am really pleased to be joining up with him again,” Cairns added. “He gave me a chance at Leeds and guided me through the many different aspects of being a footballer, so for me it is the perfect scenario to be working under him again. “I want to push as high as I possibly can, just like every other player, and to be back playing for a Championship club again is massive for me.” Cairns admitted he has enjoyed his early training sessions with the Millers, and he now competes with senior goalkeepers Lee Camp and Adam Collin for a place between the sticks. “I have had a couple of sessions with them (Camp and Collin) already and they are both great goalkeepers,” he continued. “I am fortunate to be working alongside two experienced ‘keepers, and I am sure I will learn loads from training with them.”
ROVERS GOOD PERFORMANCE NOT ENOUGH AGAINST PREMIERSHIP STOKE With over 13,000 fans watching, it was an electric atmosphere at the Keepmoat right from the off. Rovers didn’t seem phased by Premier League opposition and started the game with a real spring in their step. Cedric Evina was the first to test Jokob Haugaard in the Stoke goal as he used his pace to drive down the left before striking at goal but the Stoke keeper made the save. It was the home side who threatened again. More good work from Evina set up Andy Williams whose header forced Haugaard into another save. Against the run of play the Premier League side took the lead through Peter Crouch. Joselu used his skill to beat Aaron Taylor-Sinclair, before whipping
in a wicked ball across the box for Croush to neatly flick past Thorsten Stuckmann. Despite going a goal down Rovers didn’t lose their spark. Haugaard was called into action twice in quick succession after shots from Williams and Middleton. After being behind for just ten minutes the home side did find the equaliser they deserved and it was Nathan Tyson who’s name was on the scoresheet. Luke McCullough carried the ball almost half the pitch, skipping past a number of defenders on the way. Squaring the ball into Tyson Haugaard made a brilliant save but the Rovers striker was there to score at the second attempt.
MCKAY TWINS DEPART
will do both the brothers the world of good. It was proving hard for them to fit into my first team plans with the current form of the lads. We wish both the brothers and the family all the best for future”. The club would like to wish both players all the best in their future.
Doncaster Rovers can confirm that twins Paul and Jack McKay have joined Championship side Leeds United for an undisclosed fee. The McKay twins who joined Rovers in 1998 have worked their way through the clubs youth development system and turned professional in November 2014. During the 2014/15 season Jack McKay made 4 appearances for the club, whilst Paul’s only appearance was at the start of the 2015 season against Burton Albion in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. Darren Ferguson said “The clean break
Stoke looked rattled as Rovers continued to pressure but the referee blew for half time and the teams went in level. Darren Ferguson’s side started the second half as they finished the first and had a real energy in their football. Conor Grant who had controlled the midfield brilliantly went inches away from putting Rovers ahead as Paul Keegan played the ball into him, shooting low his shot clipped the post and went wide. Minutes later 9,000 Rovers fans were appealing for a penalty as Grant played a deadly ball across goal. With Craig Alcock waiting to tap in at the back post a clear push in the back saw him fall to the ground. Much to everyone’s disbelief, the referee waved play on.
Mark Hughes side found their feet however. Crouch went close for his second but missed a tap in from two yards, before Diouf also pressured the defence. Jonathan Walters put the visitors ahead as he picked up the ball and tried his luck from 30 yards. With Stuckmann at full stretch, the Rovers keeper could do nothing about it as it rocketed into the top corner, a stunning strike. Again, Rovers weren’t beaten. Craig Alcock went very close as a corner fell to him on the edge of the area before he fired at goal. With ten minutes to play Rovers went agonisingly close again. Substitute Richard Chaplow’s cross was met by Andy Butler in the box, beating the
Stoke man to it his header bounced back off the cross bar. Tyson was the next to get the fans on the edge of their seat as Gary MacKenzie headed down for Tyson to tap home from 6 yards but he scooped his effort over the bar. Throwing absolutely everything at it Rovers went so close again in stoppage time. As the ball came into the box at pace, Butler put his body on the line and threw himself at it but somehow went over the bar from 4 yards. Despite their hard work Rovers couldn’t find the equaliser they deserved to earn them a replay at the Britannia Stadium and it was Stoke who made it through to the fourth round.

BLADES NEWS2015/16 HEARTBREAK FOR BLADES WITH INJURY TIME EXIT The Blades are cruelly knocked out of the FA Cup, despite an excellent display at Old Trafford on Saturday evening. England captain Wayne Rooney, with his only notable contribution of the game nets the winning goal from the penalty spot, after Dean Hammond fouled Memphis deep into stoppage-time, following a gritty display the visitors as they worked tirelessly to deny the Premier League giants. For the third round tie against the Red Devils at Old Trafford, boss Adkins named an changed starting XI from the league clash against Peterborough United, although Matt Done was named amongst the substitutes having overcome a hamstring problem. For the home side, Louis van Gaal named a strong side, which included the likes of Rooney, Schweinsteiger, Fellaini, Mata and Martial. Kicking towards the Stretford End, looking to beat Premiership
opposition for the third consecutive season at the third round stage, the Blades started brightly with the away support in full voice. The Blades were defending resolutely at one end, whilst looking to break quickly at the other, McEveley’s pass just evading the run of the marauding Woolford. The home side’s first effort on was wildly off target from Rooney, but moments later he got in behind United’s defence from a Darmian pass and McEveley had to race back to snuff out the danger. Meanwhile, for the Blades, Coutts got the better of Fellaini on the right wing and forced Darmian into conceding a corner at the back post. As the raining continued to pour down, the visitors were continuing to frustrate their more illustrious hosts as the game went past the half hour mark, although the Blades had two scares in quick succession. Firstly, Long was out smartly to deny Rooney, whilst Old Trafford appealed in vain for a penalty as McEveley
challenged the advancing Schweinsteiger in the box. A Rooney free-kick was blocked prior to three minutes added time being signalled, as Brayford stung the palms of De Gea at the other end. The last action of the first period came from another set-piece after Coutts fouled Martial, but Blind fired harmlessly over the bar from Rooney’s cutback. The second-half began with the rain having stopped and the Blades kicking towards the 8,500 Unitedites who continued to be in full voice. Still United defended gamely and van Gaal made a double change on the hour with Memphis and Lingard replacing Mata and Herrera, whilst Flynn took the place of Sharp moments later. The first shot in anger of the second-half, much to delight of a frustrated home crowd, saw Memphis fire wide having cut inside from the left. At the other end, Basham forced De Gea into a save after a power run through the middle.
The introduction of Memphis had visibly given the home side and its supporters a lift, but still the Blades defended as a unit. McEveley limped out of the action and was replaced by Reed, with Woolford dropping into left-back. The Red Devils were clearly nervy as the clocked ticked down and it showed as Smalling missed his kick completely with the goal at his mercy after Brayford had put his body on the line to deny Martial. In the 93rd minute, just when it looked like a replay was on the cards, it was heartbreak for the Blades as Manchester United snatched what proved to be the winner from the penalty spot. Memphis got the better of Brayford on the left and it was Hammond who was adjudged to have caught the Dutchman as weaved his way into the area. ROONEY stepped up from 12 yards and sent Long the wrong the way to cruelly send the Blades out of the cup.
GAFFER’S REACTION Nigel Adkins was bursting with pride in the aftermath of Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford, despite his side exiting the competition in the cruellest of circumstances. Wayne Rooney’s penalty deep into stoppagetime proved to be the game’s decisive moment, after Dean Hammond was adjudged to have fouled Memphis, but that should take nothing away from what was a fantastic gutsy display from the Blades. The Gaffer remarked: “Manchester United showed us the utmost respect with the team they fielded and we wanted to be positive to start with. “We knew it would be tough, it was, but we did ever so well. We defended excellently, we were resolute, we had a grit and desire about ourselves and we threw our bodies on the line on numerous occasions. “We were organised, disciplined and the players worked their socks off, they gave it a real go as they have done in every game in recent weeks and we were backed by over 8,000 supporters who be were so noisy it was unbelievable. “Things are coming together at this Club, we can see clear signs of it now, from the players
right through to the supporters, everyone is united together. “What was such a shame is we lost the tie to a penalty in the 93rd minute, from a challenge that was just an honest endeavour to try and keep the ball out of our net.” Adkins added: “We felt comfortable defensively for long periods so to lose the game like we did hurts especially having come to Old Trafford and from very early on be well in the tie and look like taking them back to Bramall Lane for a replay. “We would have been ecstatic with a win or a draw, even more so having played against arguably against Manchester United’s strongest possible side. “Moving forward we have to take a lot of heart from this performance, the players were excellent, the fans were too and now we really have to kick on.”

OWLS NEWS2015/16 WEDNESDAY SAFELY THROUGH IN FA CUP OWLS
Wednesday posted their third win of the season against Fulham, this time in the FA Cup to advance to round four. Having overcome the Cottagers twice in the Championship – and only last week in the capital – the Owls made it three from three with a 2-1 success. Barry Bannan opened the scoring with a thunderbolt just before half time only for the visitors to reply in an instant through Moussa Dembele. But Atdhe Nuhiu came off the bench to hit the winner in the second half to ensure Wednesday go into the fourth round draw. The Owls carried on where they left off at Craven Cottage last Saturday and took the game to Fulham, with Glenn Loovens almost netting his maiden goal for the club early doors. Kieran Lee jinked past two defenders only to
be thwarted by Andy Lonergan and Loovens sliced the rebound wide. A timely intervention from Shaun Hutchinson then prevented Lucas Joao from connecting with a Modou Sougou feed before desperate defending kept out the latter at the near post. But with the cup clash seemingly heading into the interval goalless, the tie exploded into life with two goals in a minute. First, on 43 minutes, Bannan executed a perfect hit from 25 yards that positively flew past Lonergan and into the top corner. But Fulham caught Wednesday cold straight from the restart and substitute Dembele crashed home from close range to haul the visitors back on terms. And the Londoners then promptly came out of the traps apace for the second period – and should have doubled their tally on 47 minutes.

Ashley Richards delivered a perfect ball on to the head of Dembele but Joe Wildsmith made a superb point-blank save to deny the striker a double. Moments later, Jamie O’Hara saw a fierce shot from 12 yards bravely blocked by Daniel Pudil as Fulhsm saw another chance go begging. And it was the same scenario again on 56 minutes when Tom Cairney found Alex Kacaniklic but the Swedish international got the ball tangled at his feet and the opportunity was gone. And the Owls duly made Fulham pay on 73
minutes when substitute Nuhiu calmly volleyed past Lonergan to restore the lead. A three-man build-up ended invitingly for the big man, who made no mistake on the angle in front of the Kop. With the game stretched for the closing stages, Joao could have put the tie beyond doubt but sidefooted wide from a Jeremy Helan pass. Fulham pressed for a second equaliser towards the whistle and Sakari Mattila drilled narrowly over from 25 yards, which was the Londoners’ last chance of note.
GOALS FROM ALL ANGLES
weekends, goals from Fernando Forestieri, Ross Wallace and Barry Bannan were all awarded the Goal of the Weekend. And while the spectaculars continue to fly in, Loovens says it is making for a great atmosphere in the dressing room. He said: “I think we are going for all the top five in the Goal of the Season running at the moment! “I think it’s great because we can score from every angle, from scrappy ones in the box to 25-yarders! “It’s great to have that in your team. “You always want to help the team as much as you can by chipping in with goals but at the moment they don’t need my help! “We have plenty of goals in our team but that is one part of my game I need to work on to add goals myself.”
The goals have been flying in for Wednesday in stunning fashion of late and skipper Glenn Loovens has hailed his side’s ability to score from all angles. For three successive

BANNAN STRIKE VOTED FA CUP GOAL OF THE ROUND Barry Bannan has won the Emirates FA Cup goal of the third round after his superb strike against Fulham. The Scottish international’s sweetly struck shot from 25yards received 47% of the vote on the Emirates FA Cup official Twitter account, edging out Leeds winger Mustapha Carayol.

between 29 January and 1 February. Wednesday defeated Fulham in third round while Shrewsbury reached the fourth round stage by overcoming Gainsborough, Grimsby and Cardiff. The last time the two sides met was back in 1987 in the League Cup when a September 1-1 draw at Gay Meadow was followed by a 2-1 Owls win at Hillsborough two weeks later. The accolade comes just a week after fellow Scot Ross Wallace was awarded both the Sky Bet Championship and Sky Sports News HQ goal of the weekend for his sensational effort at Craven Cottage. Bannan’s goal against the Whites on Saturday was his second of the season in all competitions, having opened his account in a Wednesday shirt last December in our 2-2 draw away at Cardiff City. Wednesday secured a safe passage to the fourth round of the FA Cup after Atdhe Nuhiu’s strike separated the sides in the 2-1 victory, registering their third win over Fulham in the 2015/16 campaign.
